illain Arts Tattoo News Magazine. The Premier Issue. I can not emphasize how honored I am to present this magazine to the tattoo community. A magazine conceived during the Corona Virus pandemic. Recognizing the need for Tattoo News during this time as well as a desire to publish a magazine with top shelf content that tattoo artists and collectors would appreciate; Troy and I decided to move forward with Villain Arts Tattoo News Magazine and announced the launch of the magazine in May. I was overwhelmed by the caliber of contributors that contacted us wanting to be a part of the project. Something that started as an idea grew to an epic 100+ issue packed with informative
magazine can provide, such as hyperlinks and the ability to read on any device anywhere. We will be publishing an issue every 3 months and will also be adding features in upcoming issues such as tattoo equipment reviews. For those of you who do not know me, my name is Jersey Nicolardi and I’ve been a tattoo artist for about 20 years and have owned ArchAngel Tattoo & Art Gallery in Canal Fulton Ohio for the past 17 years. I have attended Villain Arts Conventions tattooing and judging the tattoo contests for nearly 10 years and miss attending shows like many of you. I am also a regular guest artist at Philadelphia Eddies 621 and Atlantic Tattoo throughout the year. I feel blessed every day to do what I love, be a part of this craft and carry on a tradition that was passed on to me. Tattooing always has and always will convey a certain magic to me. Until then, we must continue to stay strong, resilient and overcome our challenges together as a community. Enjoy this issue. It was a labor of love, giving back to tattooing what tattooing has given us and sharing with the world stories, information, and beautiful artwork from all over the globe. Thanks to everyone who contributed in making this issue bad ass!! Looking forward to bringing to our readers more great content in upcoming issues! Thanks for reading and enjoy!
Tattooing has grown into an accepted mainstream art form with artists pushing the median further than ever. Today’s Jersey Nicolardi 10-30-2020 artists are creating some of the most amazing tattoo artwork we have ever seen. I am grateful to the tattooing pioneers such as Lyle Tuttle, Ed Hardy, Ernie Carafa, Philadelphia Eddie Funk, and most recently Troy Timpel, among so many others who helped bring tattooing to the level that it is today. We bear witness today to a time in tattooing that the world has never experienced before. Marshall touches on this in his Pull up a Chair article, referring to it as the “tattoo bubble”. It seems to keep growing and growing. Not unlike tattooing, Villain Arts keeps growing. Looking towards 2021, there are conventions that are planned and we have high hopes for the year. This year has taught many of us to stay fluid and prepared for unexpected changes. The entire year has been full of changes, some of these changes may be temporary and others may be permanent. There have been high expectations for a vaccine. Troy speaks about the vaccine progress in his article Boss Talk. Let’s hope they release a safe and effective vaccine soon and the world can return to normal.

T
his was going to be a great year in January. Minneapolis, Council Bluffs, Philly, Atlanta, and Cleveland all beat last year’s numbers. I was all set for Chicago when…… Seems like years ago, thinking back to March now. Its like we are living in a Sci fi movie. We did our best to try to reschedule and push the shows back to the point of the country returning to normal. We managed to get one show out. OKC. OKC is a great little city and a super nice show. The state had among the lowest Covid numbers in the
“Seems like years ago, thinking back to March now.” country when we decided to move forward with the show. We did a great job in managing the event. Temp checks, free masks to the public if they didn’t have them. Booths were spread apart. We gave additional space for artists, 6ft social distancing for the stage and contest areas. Mandatory masks for everyone. Large areas for the public, 40ft ceilings.Masks are not a requirement in Oklahoma. Not for Tattooing, not for retail, no mask requirements at all. We required them for safety. It resulted in us deleting 200 comments a day from our social media. We got slammed from both the hard left and hard right. “Can’t believe your being greedy and unsafe by running an event during a pandemic” and “you can’t infringe on my personal freedoms by making me wear a mask” were the most common deleted subjects. We were featured by multiple TV crews and reporters as we were one of the first to move forward with an event in July for OKC. They all said it was the most masks they had seen worn in OKC ever. It was a far

safer environment than shopping at a “Box store” and one of the safest places we saw during our visit there. We still drew half the attendance as the year before. The artists killed it, as there were more than half the booths to split the public draw from. We canceled the years events after returning from OKC. There is no way to turn a profit on events during Covid. It will change quickly when the vaccines come out. Herd immunity for vaccine is only 50% of the country. At the time of this writing we are moving forward and hoping that Jan will allow us to move forward again safely. Trump made a press release today that the CDC is getting states prepped for release of the vaccine on Nov 1st. I doubt that will happen as none of the vaccines are scheduled to pass FDA phase 3 by then, continued on next page
but Moderna and a few others said December for deliveries. The NY times has an updated daily vaccine tracker to follow. None of it looks like Nov 1. I can’t wait for this dumpster fire of a year to end to get back on tour. When the shows come back we will be just as busy as before Covid. Tattooing has never been more popular and I can’t wait for the conventions to come back!
I have been going to conventions since 1994. I have a lot of fond memories of traveling and splitting rooms with Philadelphia Eddie. In future issues maybe I’ll start telling some of the old stories of travel with Eddie.
The convention circuit has always been one of magic for me. Seeing a new city, meeting new artists, making money, traveling and seeing a new place has been great. Conventions have allowed me to see most of the US, and have been able to travel to shows in Spain, England, Germany, Italy, France, Netherlands, Czech, etc. I’m stoked on the progress that Villain
Arts has made in keeping great attendance, ease for the artists to travel and do our shows, and the fun we have had on the road for 20+ years now. Philly is now the biggest in the world, and I’m really happy that the industry and artists have come out to do our events. 2021 will pickup where precovid left off and I look forward to seeing all of you at an upcoming Villain Arts show. hate the phrase “the new normal”, as much as I love the short-lived NBC sitcom of the same name; at least the show had Nene Leaks serving up jokes on the regular! Problem is: for the time being; it’s completely accurate!
Once your system is in place you need to start debugging...look at your system, show it to your team; and start asking questions: What could go wrong? What happens when it does? How should I handle x,y,z?
Reopening isn’t the end goal, it’s the beginning of a journey full of challenges! If you’re not open by now you’re probably on your way, to planning your re-open...which is great, because You probably pulled from sources more qualified than I am, to speak on technical issues; when you started building your new policies, and systems (like the APP, The APT, and The CDC)! I wish that reopening came with a manual, on how to do our jobs, while navigating the physical, social, and intellectual barriers, the pandemic has forced us to install. Unfortunately it can’t be done, there is no one size fits all approach...saying all studios should follow the same plan, is like saying bike tires and oranges are the same thing...sure they’re both round, but only one of them mixes well with vodka when I juice it!
I’m overwhelmed” Protect your mental health: You can’t do this all at once, or by yourself, ask for help, and break everything down into small tasks, and give yourself permission to take breaks, and find peace; throughout your day. remember if you don’t take care of yourself, you have less to offer everyone else! We’re all in this together; Look
“salad bars don’t have sneeze guards, to protect us from the vegetables” for someone who does, we have coworkers, colleagues, and clients we can ask for help! we also have neighboring businesses like hair salon, or the dentist, or chiropractor down the street, who could offer a fresh perspective on how to approach a similar problem!
Again it’s impossible to plan for everything, all we can do is take notes and try; and it’s overwhelming, so I made a quick list of some of the bugs “What if clients get angry because I’ve found in our system, and solutions they don’t understand?” This new normal is uncertain. Sadly we can’t plan for what we don’t know; I Haven’t seen anywhere else to help patch them up, and help get you started: but we can plan With what we Do! continued on next page

You can’t please everyone, but you can do your best to save the situation when you can’t! Know your policy, know why it exists, and make sure you can explain it easily. people space out when we things get technical...if a client doesn’t see why they need a mask there’s a huge difference between saying “drops of saliva in the air we exhale blah, blah, blah” and “salad bars don’t have sneeze guards, to protect us from the vegetables” dumbing it down, ensures they won’t think you’re talking to them like they’re stupid! “My normal vendor is out of stock, Where do I find ppe/specific items without overpaying a third party seller?” You don’t...we’re bound to overpay at some point; relax: just pretend it’s supreme or Gucci...it’s an inconvenience. We need to save our bandwidth for problems! “What if I overlap, screw up, or forget to do something, or make a mistake?” Same as it ever was, to error is human, to acknowledge, apologize, and bend over backwards to make it right, is correct!

BLACK LIVES MATTER
PROTEST

eorge Floyd was murdered. Shock and disgust filled the entire planet. A few days pass and I see a flyer for a protest in Tampa, organized by Donna Davis. We knew that sitting on the couch didn’t do anything, so we make a plan to go. We’d bring a wagon and fill it with four cases of water to hand out. We marched alongside hundreds of protestors for miles, our feet ached, our arms tired, we saw people faint from heat, and all of the water we brought had been passed out.
T
his was our first experience joining a movement that has been growing, and quite frankly ignored, for decades. Then we went to four more. Each one more emotional than the last. Some were full of energy, marching for 5 or 6 miles without stopping, others stayed more central and focused on emotional
demonstrations, or creating space for storytellers, like the American Indian Movement, to share their struggles with injustice to those of us who knew we would never truly understand. I remember one of the marches we attended, the organizer had all of us kneel in the street and raise our fists in the air. She set a timer for eight minutes and forty-six seconds. The first minute was completely silent, and by the second minute my shoulder started to tire and burn. I wanted to switch arms or bend my elbow. Then over the megaphone I heard a voice say “Do not relax your arms, the discomfort you feel now is trivial in comparison to George Floyd being unable to breathe.” We raised our fists higher. By the third minute, the weight of collective grief began to well continued on next page

up inside of me. Among my family, friends, and strangers, I started to cry. We know that not all cops are bad, but what we experienced at these marches was not good. We had
seen videos scattered throughout every media source, but the impact of those didn’t hit us until we saw it with our own eyes. One scene that really shocked us was witnessing a police officer in his car, accelerate excessively into the crowd, stopping inches short of young girls walking in the street. You cannot expect hundreds of emotional people to squeeze onto a sidewalk, the concept of that is ridiculous. We have to walk in the street. We’re here to make you a
little uncomfortable. If everyone made their demonstrations in a convenient manner, the voices that need to be heard will just be ignored, again. My 19 year old daughter and I tasted tear gas for the first time. We saw people run in front of us, so we ran too, and the crowd became sporadic. There is nothing scarier than 400 people panicking in different directions, from police who are meant to protect them. This march was peaceful, all of the marches we joined in Tampa were peaceful. We were loud, we blocked traffic, we turned heads of various news channels. We did not throw anything, break anything, or cause any dismay, but god forbid we walked toward a wrong street, armored police moved in, rubber bullets flew, and tear gas filled the air. So many conversations I hear about this movement continued on next page
Villain Arts Tattoo News Magazine Fall 2020 Issue 1
are about how violent the protestors are, turning marches into riots, but everything I saw in Tampa says otherwise. One thing I noticed that might have caused some of the conflicts in Tampa, was about communication. Many of the organizers, especially by BLM Tampa, actually planned with the police, and had a specific route that both parties were aware of. They also had volunteers from legal professions wearing yellow vests and actively looking out for agitators. Other organizers were a person or group with enough following, who had either just a vague direction in mind, or a route that simply wasn’t known to the police. Both had hundreds in suit. So if the latter group walks in a certain direction, say near the freeway, whether they plan on getting on the ramp or not, the reaction from police was forceful re-direction. As a protestor or ally who wants to help, there is almost no way of knowing which of these types of marches you’re attending. These are our personal experiences with the protests. I encourage you to read, listen, and empathize with more voices from movement than just my own.
Villain Arts Tattoo News Magazine Fall 2020 Issue 1
The bottom line is this: There IS systemic racism embedded deep in our country, and there is proof that is staring us in the face through the wrongful deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tamir Rice, Eric Garner, Sandra Bland, Ahmaud Arbery, Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Elijah McClain, and so many others before them, and before camera phones. It’s important for us stand up for what is right, I believe that is what we did at the Tampa protests.
ABOUT THE WRITERS Belena and Aaron are both tattoo artists who met in New Orleans at the last Villain arts show there, and they got along amazingly right away, their shared ideals and common interests have taken them all over the world together for almost a year, and these events were part of that. In their opinion, they make an incredible team! That’s why they chose to write this together, it just made sense.

P
ull up a chair, a primer. So everything seems to be changing so rapidly these days, no need to state the obvious here.. We’ve all seen how tattooing and tattoo culture is evolving as well. Body art has become much more acceptable and almost (dare I say) mainstream. I often wonder what the future holds for our industry. Can it keep growing or will it level out in the face of 2020’s? Will tattooing possibly even decline in popularity? I mean, can it get much better? There are virtually no limits to the art that is currently being created in skin. A while back, an old friend and an icon of tattoo history, (who I will mention in another installment) shared some thoughts with me regarding what he sees in the future of tattooing. He spoke of an eventual burst of the “tattoo bubble” ...A time when the industry will level out and

“I often wonder what the future holds for our industry. Can it keep growing or will it level out in the face of 2020’s? ” responsible for the popularity of tattoos today, it’s the people... our community. Just visit any tattoo convention and you will feel camaraderie, where everyone is accepted and welcome. We all share a common curiosity and fascination for the art of customizing skin. It connects us. It’s a wonderful thing. I’ve met and bonded with so many wonderful souls within the tattoo industry, It’s like an extended family from all over the world. Travel Tips for Traveling Artists
Oh, look at you, out here on a big trip... So Where are you going? The further ahead you decide where you’re traveling to, the more you can set up before you get there. Here’s a few tips:
First tip - Start hashtagging your pics
with the place you’re going before you go. For example, if you’re going to New York City, hashtag your pics #NYC, #NYCtattooartist, #Newyorktattoo, shit like that. Use your imagination or look up the popular hashtags for that area. continued on next page
Villain Arts Tattoo News Magazine Fall 2020 Issue 1
Second tip - TAKE DEPOSITS. Do not
give anyone the ability to waste your time. That’s not even a travel tip, that’s just good advice. You’re welcome.
Third tip - How far are you going? Long
trips can be rough on your body, which is already beaten up from hunching over in your chair tattooing all day. Long flights can seriously dehydrate you, drink a ton of water and avoid alcohol until you get there and settle in. Try not to interrupt your sleep schedule (if you keep one). Not getting enough sleep and water can lead to bad decisions and you not doing what you need to do the way you need to do it. There you go, stay sharp kids! Gentle Jay

Rizzie
D’ALTERIO Interviewed by Shannon Michael @oxilox
Describe yourself in a few words.
I’m gender non-binary. I’ve always felt like one of the guys. I’ve never been one to shy away from an opportunity. My charismatic nature has landed me many opportunities and I’ve met such great friends along the way. I’m easy going, exuberant, and love to make people laugh. I’m known as the body guard to my friends. Don’t fuck with my clique hahaha. My life hasn’t been easy. I’ve been forged in fire, but I came out steel.
When did you 1st start tattooing?
I began tattooing at 18 years old. Due to my grades I was able to graduate high school early. This allowed me to go full time at the shop I was apprenticing at. I even worked on my Prom. I honestly preferred to be at the shop. I was ready to move on to the next chapter in my life.
Do you feel like tattooing has given you an opportunity to express who you are?
100% yes. Tattooing really gave me the power to say,”fuck what people think I’m just going to be me.” I get dressed up everyday in suspenders, a bow tie, and nice boots. I present very masculine. I think there is a certain sex
appeal to tattoo artists. When my clients first meet me I want them to get the impression I’m professional, and care about my appearance. Being gender non-binary I feel the most free to express myself in this industry. Other jobs I won’t be able to be as loud about it.
Do you feel like the tattoo industry is open to the LGBT community?
I have to say it’s pretty mixed. On one hand I think I’m lucky. Most everyone I’ve come across never discriminated against me. I think the worst I had to deal with was sexual harassment/ homophobia. The first shop I worked at was a nightmare. After I got out of that situation I found peace. I remember my friend Richie saying to me that he saw me as one of the guys. I just fit in. That always stuck with me. I just feel like tattoo artists are deviants of normal society. Whether they’re deep into the BTSM scene, poly, or non cisgender. I just always felt like I fit in.
Favorite LGBT ambassador?
I really appreciate Ellen Page. She’s been so inspiring and just a class act. I hope to one day be as confident and inspiring as her. continued on next page

Pros and Cons of being young in an old industry?
I have so much respect for the older generation that paved the way. I started when I was 18, so I was no stranger to people using my age against me. I guess the cons would be constantly having to prove myself and push harder then the older guys. Another con would be getting made fun of for using newer technology/ techniques. Pros? Well for one my back’s longevity will hold out. I use both coils and rotary machines. I like the balance of the old and the new. I guess being young allows me to be able to choose. Plus it’s nice not having to make my own needles and inks. I’ve heard stories. That just sounds exhausting. I just feel like this industry is all about respect. As long as you respect the old guys you’ll be fine.
What is your prefered style to tattoo?
Neo traditional, illustrative, watercolor. I like to tattoo cute or witchy things. I’ve always been a nerd, so anytime I can tattoo something nerdy my day is made.
Who would you say has been an influence to your artwork?
Georgia Grey, Nicholas Keiser, Hideo Kojima, Cristian Casas, Tite Kubo, Matt Curzon.
What was the 1st tattoo you did?
Oh jeez, let me think. My first tattoo ever was a blue rose on this girl Randy. I did it with a 5rl, 14rs, and 8rs. It took so long to finish. I remember being so nervous for it.
When you’re not working what do you enjoy doing?
When I’m not working I’m painting. Painting continued on next page

is my second passion. My medium of choice is watercolor. Painting on wood is the best. I also really enjoy long boarding, and hiking.
When did you do your 1st tattoo convention?
My first tattoo convention was the 2013 Villain Arts Philadelphia convention. I was only a year into tattooing and definitely not prepared. I think I packed the whole shop with me lol. The best part was I got to booth right next to Carlos Rojas. It was really inspiring watching him work. I even had the opportunity to let him borrow my tattoo table.
What would you like to see for the future of tattooing?
I just hope it stays the cool kids club that it is. I fear the idea of tattoo schools. There’s a right of I passage in getting through an apprenticeship. I just feel like schools are going to create this massive influx of shops opening and That will make business a lot harder.
One item you can’t live without.
Realistically my IPad. It’s become my main device. I haven’t touched my laptop in years. I really rely on my PS4 for happiness as well. When I have a bad day I just get lost in a good game.
Do you have any pets?
Yes. Arya is a Green Cheek Conure. She’s blue and green with a red and yellow belly. Her red markings make a heart on her chest. When she wants out of her cage she says, “come here.” Arya is the best. Super snuggly. She has fully grown flight feathers. It’s always a cool feeling when she flies to me. Sometimes she’ll take naps in my sweatshirt.
Favorite tattoo ink color?
Southwest Blue Eternal. It reminds me of the Need for Speed games. That would be the color I’d paint my cars. I really like how it heals in the skin. That’s my go to color.
Villain Arts Tattoo News Magazine Fall 2020 Issue 1
If you could travel anywhere no cost to you?
Iceland, for sure. I would want to be close to nature. Or Australia. I’ve been on this huge hiking kick lately. I think during quarantine I realized how far I’ve drifted from nature. I’ve been trying to make up for it ever since.
If you were not tattooing what could you see yourself doing?
I would go to school to learn how to be a concept artist for video games. Hey, who knows, maybe I would’ve done film school. I love movies, I’ve always wanted to direct.
How do you think tattoos are viewed in society today? I’ve been noticing that there is more and more tattoo influence in film and tv. So many characters have tattoos even the actors themselves. For the most part when I continued on next page
go out people generally compliment my tattoos. I feel like tattoos have become very mainstream in a good way. I’m excited to see a president one day have a full sleeve or something along that nature.
ABOUT THE WRITER Shannon Michael is a Tattoo Artist at Aces High Tattoo in West Palm Beach and also tattoos at Villain Arts Tattoo Conventions.
If you could tattoo any celebrity dead or living who would you pick?
I would really like to tattoo Eminem or Leigh Raven.
Have you apprenticed anyone?
I had the pleasure of apprenticing Dusty. They’re now a full time artist. I’m very proud of the progress they’ve made. It’s nerve racking teaching someone. I never wanted to put someone through the ringer like my apprenticeship. There’s always that fear in the back of my head of failing someone. So I tried to instill all I know in them.
Any memorable VA conversation moment you’d like to mention?
I have so many great memories with Villain Arts. I remember it was the Milwaukee show. The after party was at a karaoke bar. I got some confidence and sang Colt 45- Afro Man. The next day everyone I ran into kept telling me how I killed it. I couldn’t stop smiling all day. I also really like seeing Oxi-Lox. We always nerd out about Pokémon. Anytime I can talk about Pokémon I jump on the opportunity. The VA conventions is also where I met my best friend Madison Mclain. Her drive and work ethic is what pushes me today.

What’s your origin story?
I was born in Philadelphia & have been here my entire life. I attended art school & later some college. It’s always been pretty challenging living here, I wasn’t successful finding an apprenticeship & it really painted the picture that tattooing here was the “boys club.” I was very fortunate to meet my mentor by “chance.” It was 2008 & I was hired to gogo dance and serve drinks at the Halloween party at Paul Booth’s Last Rites. I met Little Dragon & Stefano Alcantra for the first time. Dragon’s English wasn’t very good at the time (it actually reminded me a lot of my family that would visit from Japan), but we exchanged numbers anyways. We talked daily, & I constantly found reasons to go visit him in NewYork between getting my sleeve done, metal shows & working on art together. He quickly became my best friend & later my mentor in 2011 before he moved back to Beijing. I drove back and fourth from Philadelphia to Manhattan to get the education I so desperately desired & finally found my place in the tattoo world.
Describe the moment you knew you wanted to become a tattoo artist. I was in second grade & it was the late 90s so school trips were ALOT different & parents were a lot less uptight. The local playground always had the carnival come through every year & it was something we always looked forward to. My favorite was the small sideshow/fun house. I remember seeing a Painted Lady for the first time & being completely in awe. You didn’t really see a lot of heavily tattooed women then & she was everything I knew I wanted to be. Id constantly draw pictures of her in my notebook & cover myself in temporary tattoos every chance I got (which mortified my parents & got me grounded ALOT).
What was the first tattoo you did?
The first tattoo I did in a shop after my apprenticeship was a simple traditional skull rose on my high school best friend. I was nervous & slow. continued on next page

I mostly use rotary machines at this point. Ive been using DragonFlys for the last few years. I still prefer to outline with coils. My DestroyTroy V2 Mamacita
It took over three hours, & looking back now it would probably only take me 30 minutes.
Do you have any tips on managing social media pages for new artists?
It doesn’t cost you anything to be kind, & if you see something you don’t like, keep scrolling…
Who is your biggest artistic influence and why?
My mentor is easily my biggest influence. He was & still is my favorite tattoo artist & he gave me the opportunity no one else would. He changed my life forever & I owe him everything.
What’s your favorite way to spend your off time? Haha, I am never not working. But in that rare occasion, I am very much a homebody with my three dogs. I love the gym, everything nature & cooking with my partner.
What are the Top 3 songs on your tattooing playlist?
“Alexa, play Pop Punk Powerhouse playlist on spotify”
portfolios have made it ALOT easier for work to be stolen and traced. Its frustrating to share a tattoo you’re so proud of, get amazing feedback, & then find a bunch of shitty ripoffs of your custom work. Like anything else internet related, it makes drama easier. I honestly wouldn’t have social media if it wasn’t crucial to my job.
is a favorite & I used a DanKubin Sidewinder for largerscale work. I still use bar needles.
How do you feel Social Media has changed tattooing?
This is something I feel strongly about from both sides. Social media has completely changed the industry in the artist’s favor. It’s made it so much easier to find artists you love instead of just local recommendations or walking into a shop to look at portfolios. As someone who’s majority of clientele comes from my social media following, it’s made it amazing to connect to clients all over the world and always have appointments for conventions. It has connected the community & promoted so much tattoo acceptance. While the positive influence of social media significantly outweighs the bad, there are still downsides. Online

balance private life and work?
I keep them separate. I don’t share anything I wouldn’t want repeated & I don’t complain about my problems or share industry gossip with clients. While I am friendly to most & thrive socially in the convention circuit, my “private life” circle is very small.
Coffee or Tea?
I drink way too much coffee. I’m one of those people that can drink iced coffee all year round. Hazelnut is my favorite, preferably with oat milk. I also really love iced Matcha lattes.

I attended my first Villain Arts convention (Philadelphia) in 2008 working for H2Ocean & again with Razorblade Supplies, then started tattooing at my first show (The Philadelphia Tattoo Convention) in 2012.
What is your favorite city to travel in the U.S. to tattoo and why? Now that we live here I can’t say Salem, haha. I think Austin is my favorite city to to visit right now. The art & vegan food community are really impressive & a lot of our
closest friends live there. The weather is a little too hot for us, otherwise we probably would’ve moved there next.
I saw you tattooed in Milan last year. How was tattooing at a convention in Italy different from the U.S.?
Well first of all, I can honestly tell you I was probably the worst artist there! It was UNREAL to be in another country tattooing in a show full of my Idols and heavy hitters. I got to see my favorite artist in the fucking world (@ juliensebert) do a three day front panel! I could’ve died! I was also super nervous, I didn’t have any appointments & had to rely on walkups for the first time in a long time. Also, despite our practice months before, I did not speak Italian. I brought a lot of prepriced flash with me & translated the basics to display on my booth apologizing for not speaking good Italian & honestly had one of the most amazing convention weekends of my life.! The goth girl culture is strong everywhere & I was humbled to tattoo so many beautiful alternative girls. We also were superrrrr fortunate (I mean that in the relief that there were attendees that spoke English) that the American soldiers stationed out there attended the convention. It was just really cool to talk to them about there experience & an honor to tattoo them.

At first, I was grateful for the vacation! I don’t really go out much when were home from conventions, & mostly work in our private studio or spend time at home. Fortunately, my amazing clients & followers kept me pretty busy with commission art. But I also found it pretty easy to find artists block after being in isolation as early as the first month. What’s your origin story?
I’m from Columbus Ohio, moved to the Carolinas, got into the skate scene and punk rock in late 70’s, 80’s was deep in the straight edge skinhead scene. We played music in our band Victim of Society..skating and playing music was our outlet back then. Being an art student all through school, I just kept drawing and painting. I was
an art honors student wanting more. I had paintings in art galleries and it wasn’t enough. Bands that we were friends with and tattoo mags got me interested in tattoos. I started messing with guitar string tattoo machines and messing my friends up. I started around, I would say 89-90. I started my apprenticeship in 1991. I joined the continued on next page

By then a lot of people I worked with at Fun City had left. Chris Garver had gone, Needles from the Mcdougle shop had gone too. Back to Columbus. It was amazing to be apart of the beginning of the monster Army National Guard and ended up finishing around 92. I apprenticed under Byron Wallace, and learned a lot. Brian Wallace was a jar head, lol but still a punker American skin. Moved on to Jacksonville, NC, lol and worked for the late Joey Funk. Mighty Joe’s in 92 Court Street shop. Crazy times! I Opened my first shop in 93 in Greensboro NC called Emerald Dragon. This is where I was till late 95-96. I visited a friend in NYC and got a job at the World Famous Fun City with Jonathan Shaw. What drew you to the Japanese style of tattooing?
Japanese is a part of tattooing that doesn’t go away. Big figures, bright color, and dark backgrounds always withstands the test of time. My tattoos are seen across the room and look new a decade old.
that became Hell City, was good friends with the late Chris Pfouts. I finally moved back south in 98-99 working for Carolina Tattoo. Catching up with my first apprentice Dave Kruesman working with Sean Crowfoot and eventually me and Dave opened Straight A Tattoo in Asheboro NC in 2000.

How do you feel technology has affected tattooing? I think technology has made the industry lazy but more efficient...I spent thousands on books my whole career trying to find a diamond in the rough, now you can just Google everything. It’s good and bad. I think machines have changed for the better. I can tattoo longer with my hands not bothering me..rotary just work the same every time, no fiddling with the damn rubber band and springs softening.
Cats or dogs?
I have cats and dogs.
Advice to Young Artists coming up? Paint! Watercolor paint all the time! I tattoo the same way as I paint so paint paint paint!
What’s next from Mr. James Vaughn?

I’m Artist Manager with a company that has the only government contract to open at least 6 shops on military bases all over the world so hopefully I can get the Ramstein Base or Japan. Who does your tattoos?
Since I work for Villain Arts, I am afforded the opportunity to be tattooed by some of the most amazing artists around. Phil Colvin is currently working on my back. PHILADELPHIA TATTOO ARTS CONVENTION
2020
by Aaron Is @aaronistattoo

here are so many ways I could describe this convention, and if you’ve done it yourself, there are even more ways you could describe it. There is an anxious excitement when you walk in the room for the first time that weekend. The sheer size of the show, the magnitude, it almost makes me feel like I’m doing it all for the first time, and it’s like this every year.
“Every year I’ve done this convention it’s always given me a rush.”

I’ve been doing the Philly show since it was at the Sheraton. Every year I’ve done this convention it’s always given me a rush. Between the energy of Philadelphia and the mass influx of bodies, I’m not sure this show could ever disappoint. Whether you're completely booked or going in cold, every tattooer makes money and has an amazing time. If you're stuck in your booth all weekend working your ass off, or you're walking around as a client and collector, there has never been a shortage of entertainment, fun, insanity, beer, smiling continued on next page
faces, and just a full emersion into our industry. Your tattoo fuel gauge is always full the moment you walk in the door. I’ve traveled around the world, and this will always be one of my absolute favorites. I honestly feel like no matter what chair you're sitting in, this is an experience everyone needs to have. I may be biased with my personal stake in it because of my friends, but whether it’s your 15th show or your first, I have no doubt it’s going to be an amazing weekend.

COUNCIL BLUFFS TATTOO ARTS CONVENTION

his year’s Council Bluffs Tattoo Arts convention was an amazing event! It was the second year our shop Flesh to Fantasy Tattoo Emporium has attended this event. Although I am not an artist, I am the friendly face you will see as you walk past our booth. Most of the time a client has an idea in mind, but it takes the mind of an artist Photo by @jontuazon to make it art; to me, that is amazing. The traffic was so heavy that our booth and our friend’s booths were tattooing nonstop. This year’s convention was unique being the weekend of Valentine’s day. There were families who brought their children in to enjoy the side show entertainment. There were couples who came in to get matching tattoos, as well as couples celebrating their anniversaries. Most booths handed out Valentine’s Day candy and we made a whole weekend out of it. It was amazing to be able to celebrate the love and support we have for one another and share it with the community. I even had the honor to pose for pictures with the littles as their favorite Unicorn while running the booth all weekend. The highlights of my weekend, while meeting some of the nicest people, was being able to get tattooed by Big Mike Hill on Friday. As a matter continued on next page

In Council Bluffs, by the end of the weekend Big Mike Hill and I took home 1st place Over all female, 1st place Best chest piece and 3rd place best cover up as well. This year’s convention was even bigger than last year, and I look forward to seeing what 2021 brings.

ach year, The Cleveland Tattoo Arts Convention is one of my favorite shows to attend, we are from Ohio! Running the front of the booth is so enjoyable for me; I can see so many clients, friends and performers pass by. This year, as always, it was super busy each day and we were able to do some rad pieces. I run the booth for Flesh to Fantasy Tattoo Emporium, and I am also the North American Representative for Holy Water by Saint Marq. So as each person walks by, it is nice because I have

It is amazing to see so many artists tattooing from when doors open at 2pm Friday to 8pm on Sunday, when the show ends, which is not hard with the traffic, especially at this show. When I get a chance, I sneak away to go watch the entertainment that Villain Arts provides. This includes human suspension, burlesque, The Enigma, The Human Knot, and the Old City Side Show. There is just so much to see. Running the booth can be stressful at times, with the aisle being packed, but extremely rewarding too. This also gives me just a few minutes to say hello, snag a hug, and see what rad piece someone from my tattoo family is creating. This year in Cleveland we also implemented onesie Sunday; which was fun as well. Several of the artists, venders, and myself

020 has been, well... an interesting time to be alive to say the least. Most of our year has been spent in lockdown to battle Covid-19. Some of the best shows of the year won’t be happening and as of this writing the entire Viliian Arts schedule has been canceled until 2021.

Only a handful of conventions were able to operate in the first two months of 2020 and I had the pleasure of going to the Minneapolis show for the first time. Minneapolis is VILLIAN ART’S opening show of what has grown from a single show in Philadelphia, to a twenty two city grand tour that traverses the country from Philadelphia to Portland Oregon starting in early January and running through late October. For all the stories I had heard about the weather (-14° in 2018) the weekend was remarkably warmer than most

Vendors from around the world bring some of the most interesting and rare items for sale. Well known industry suppliers and machine builders bring the cutting edge of rotary technology as well as antique coil machines and flash for the nostalgic collectors. Public safety is paramount and handwashing stations and hand sanitizer are always available at all VILLIAN ARTS shows. Some of the very best artists in the country travel with Villain Arts and the tattoo contests are epic as well as highly competitive. Old rivals have been “sharpening their needles” over the winter months and with this first show they begin the seasons competitions hungry to show off their new techniques and draw the first blood of 2020 with Tattoo by Anastasia Bortnik some new trophies. This is one of the longest running Villian Arts events, and Minneapolis residents are used to the show being a deep freeze so with the gift of nice weather the show was off to a great start. Attendance was amazing, and the atmosphere friendly as the promise of an early spring gave everyone a boost and a smile. (We have a great get together for the preshow on Thursday night and everyone was super hyped for the new season. 2020 was going to be our year) Doors opened Friday at 4pm and right away the first folks through the doors headed to their preferred artist. Within the hour most were head down and working away. In addition to the tattooing professional body piercing is available with privacy and sterilization on the premises.

are the best group o’ hooligans you will ever met!) Dr. Blasphemy keeps the show rolling along smoothly as the “Voice of the Tattoo World” and is always available to help keep the crowd informed about entertainment or artists with availability. Old City Sideshow (featuring Danny Borneo and Reggie Büggmunchier), Alakazam The Human Knot, and, The Enigma, kept the crowds entertained with a great combination of classic Sideshow, Contortionisim, and humor, spread over crowd interactive shows throughout the weekend. Troy Timpel (Hail to the chief!) has distilled the essence
of what a convention can and should be. Friendly, professional, and safety, are the key elements to his events. Add to this nearly three decades of experience in the tattoo industry and one can see how he continues to provide the very best traveling show in the world.

BUSINESS CARD FROM BRUNSON COLLECTION
I
first arrived in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1977 to buy into a tattoo shop owned by Tim McGuire, a friend I had met at the Houston Texas 1976 Tattoo Convention. In 1977 we were the only shop in Cincinnati and there were only a few before us. I was young and not as interested in history, so when I first heard the name Jack Temke, I assumed he was an old retired tattoo artist from the 50’s or 60’s. Through out the years Tempke’s name came up a few times in conversation, but as a young tattooist my focus was on the future not our past.
J.F. Barber Ad from: Popular Electricity November 1910
Fast forward and I am now living in tattoos past…researching what and when ever I can around the globe. I had found out J.F. Barber had been in Cincinnati 1912-1920, tattooing and selling supplies, just blocks from our old tattoo shop.
Recently researching Cincinnati artists, I found that Temke had been at Barber’s location, 1019 Vine Street 1918-1921. So he obviously worked with or for Barber. Temke then started his own supply company at that same location. He manufactured and sold machines, The Reliable #1, #2, and #3 with the #3 being a copy of the Barber Star machine. I heard from a few old guys continued on next page

that Temke had worked at least 2 other locations in the city before his death in 1949. I’ve met a few older gentlemen in the last 10 years that had tattoos done by Temke when they were very young, great stories. I have never seen a sheet of Temke flash, but have seen his machines and supply catalog in a friends collection. I’m sure most of Temke’s personal items were discarded long ago as they almost never appear for sale . With a little help from my collector friends, I was recently able to acquire a brass Temke Reliable #2 and also a mint Temke business card…Wow… Sometimes it takes decades for items
to come home where they belong! Now if I can only find a sheet of his flash…….. See ya in the funny papers, keep your hat on so I’ll know ya’ , -Dana
ABOUT THE WRITER Dana Brunson apprenticed with D.C. Paul at Spaulding & Rogers old shop in Fayetteville, N.C. in 1971, after returning from Vietnam. D.C. Being surrounded by all of their old flash and photos had a great influence on Dana to collect the history of tattooing. He loves tattooing, and his family has collected vintage tattoo memoralbilia for over 40 years. Their shop is filled with vintage items which they share with anyone interested in tattoo history. He will share some of his favorites with you here and hope to inspire you to keep traditition alive.
