At the Villanova School of Business (VSB), faculty conduct world-class scholarship appearing in the very best publications in their respective fields. But at VSB, that’s not enough. We also encourage research that has real-world impact beyond the academe, in corporations and financial institutions, nonprofit organizations and public policy. Additionally, we encourage faculty to engage students in their research as a way to integrate theory and practice in the classroom. In this edition of Inspiring Minds, we profile a subset of VSB faculty who are doing top-tier research that speaks to real-world problems. At VSB, we are developing business leaders for a better world.

Tina Yang holds a PhD in Finance from the University of Georgia. Her research interests span a wide range of corporate finance topics including corporate governance, environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues, and risk management. She has published in top academic journals including Journal of Financial Economics, Review of Financial Studies, Management Science, and American Business Law Journal, among others. To Dr. Yang, it is most rewarding for researchers to identify emerging trends and provide rigorous empirical results to inform policy debates. One of her working papers examines the role of institutional investors in bank governance. As arguably the most important class of equity holders, there is a paucity of evidence on the role of institutional investors in mitigating bank

earning management, an issue that has emerged as critical one in bank regulation and governance. Motivated by the 2008 Global Financial Crisis and the recent finding that bank earning management can signal future financial crash risk, Tina and her co-authors use data from 46 countries to investigate whether and how institutional investors deter this practice. Dr. Yang says she “tap dances to work” because “Villanova supports its faculty in taking risks and tackling on tough challenges to make a positive change in the classroom and in the real world.”

VSB supports our taking risks and tackling tough challenges to make a positive change in the classroom and in the real world.

Pankaj Patel joined VSB in 2015 after earning his PhD at the University of Louisville and spending several years on the faculty at Ball State University. Prior to coming to academia, he co-founded two high-tech startups and since then has founded two other technology companies. He has consulted extensively with heavy manufacturing firms in the US and in Sweden and received research grants from the US State Department, the Kamprad Family Foundation and the Swedish Central Bank. His recent research focuses on a range of issues related to entrepreneurial choice and performance: the biological basis of entrepreneurial choice, long-term physical wear-and-tear of entrepreneurial stress, the influence of early-stage employment practices on venture survival, and more. Some of his recent research has been published in the Academy of Management Journal, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, the Journal of Operations Management, and the Strategic Management Journal, among others. The findings in his recent works, broadly based on large-scale and reliable archival data seldom available for young ventures, have direct and measurable implications for entrepreneurs, policymakers and investors.

Denise Hanes Downey is a Villanova alumna who completed her PhD in Accounting at Bentley University. Her research focuses on the intersection of globalization and investor protection, exploring challenges associated with audits of multinational companies, offshoring of the audit function, and distributed audit teams. Dr. Downey’s work seeks to not only uncover factors that contribute to poor audit quality, but also identify solutions to mitigate the risk of a large audit failure. In addition to publications in Auditing: A Journal of Practice & Theory, Behavioral Research in Accounting, and the Journal of Accounting Literature, Dr. Downey’s expertise gained her a senior economic research fellowship with the Public

Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB). “It is energizing to work in such a complex area, considering the nuances of our global business environment that demand the attention of leaders and regulators. I learn something new every day,” says Dr. Downey. In the classroom, Dr. Downey frames auditing from the regulatory and global context in which auditors operate, challenging students to consider how issues like foreign privacy laws affect audits and investor information. In doing so, students come to more truly appreciate the role they play in today’s capital markets. “VSB provides incredible access to the business community. Discussing the current global audit environment with regulators, auditors and students makes my research especially rewarding.”

VSB places significant value on engaging both current and future business leaders in our research.

Sutirtha Bagchi comes to VSB from the Stephen M. Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan where he completed a PhD in Business Economics. He holds an MBA from Purdue’s Krannert School of Management and previously worked at McKinsey & Company as an Associate. His research explores the impact of inequality on economic growth, the role of political competition on the funding of public pension plans, and the impact of ride sharing services on the price of taxi medallions. Dr. Bagchi’s research has been published in the Journal of Industrial Economics, the Journal of Comparative Economics, Review of Industrial Organization, and the Journal of Public Policy. Dr. Bagchi notes that his projects have come from observing the world around us and trying to explain

what he views as puzzles. His recent paper examining the drop in taxi medallion prices in response to the entry of car sharing services was triggered by conversations with Uber and Lyft drivers, many of whom previously drove a cab. He actively works on research with undergraduate students and views it as a win-win: “Exploring topics that have real-world implications and the potential to influence public policy is key to my research.

Manuela Priesemuth joined the VSB community in 2016 with specializations in organizational behavior and business ethics after completing her PhD at University of Central Florida and serving as an assistant professor at the School of Business & Economics at Wilfrid Laurier University in Ontario, Canada. Her teaching and research focus on understanding acts of workplace aggression, particularly those that are directed from supervisors towards subordinates. Further, she has a passion for understanding how such destructive behaviors can be stopped, with the ultimate goal of creating fair, ethical and supportive workplaces. Indeed, some of her most recent

research showed that when work environments foster norms of ethics, fairness and respect, organizational members feel more confident to address aggression and wrongdoing in the workplace. In her view, these insights are especially relevant in the current environment as companies search for answers on how to best increase employee comfort and confidence in articulating and voicing concerns regarding harassment and other forms of aggression. Dr. Priesemuth’s research not only offers practical relevance, but has also been published in many top academic journals including the Academy

of Management Journal, the Journal of Management and the Journal of Organizational Behavior. She notes, “VSB provides great opportunities by supportingcutting-edge research of faculty and by disseminating it more broadly to practitioners through University channels like the Inspiring Minds podcasts.”

Combining cutting-edge research and practice is an important endeavor.

Yoon-Na Cho was somewhat of a nomad as a child, spending her early life immersed in a range of cultures and ways of thinking – both in the US and Korea. These transitions helped her develop an appreciation for the importance of how “framing” influences a range of human responses. She believes that students can make progress towards becoming responsible global citizens by embracing diverse points of view, noting that “VSB’s students are expected to question their intuitions and consider all possible constituents involved in the business.” Dr. Cho is dedicated to enhancing consumer welfare and contributing to society in

a positive way by analyzing consumer behaviors so as to better understand and enhance consumers’ experiences across various stages of the decision-making process. Her research has appeared in the Journal of Public Policy & Marketing, the Journal of Business Research, the Journal of Business Ethics, the International Journal of Advertising, among others, and her paper published in the Journal of Consumer Affairs received the publication’s biennial Best Paper Award. While completing her PhD at the University of Arkansas, she was the sole recipient of the Distinguished Doctoral Fellowship. She describes VSB as “a gifted place that values acquiring knowledge and skills not only for a better personal future, but to influence others in a way that enhances their lives, leading to a more promising future for us all.”

By encouraging students to think beyond their framed mindsets, they can better appreciate alternative perspectives.
