Until 22th September

The Thomas-Henry Museum of Art invites you to enjoy 30 reproductions, from its collection of masterpieces, on the walls around the Les Provinces district of Octeville. The paintings have been chosen by the local inhabitants. Just around a bend in the road, in a square, or in a garden, you could come across works by Hyacinthe Rigaud, Horace Vernet or Jean-François Millet. In this way, the museum is available to everyone. Each work has a descriptive card containing the key elements for interpreting the painting, as well as QD codes enabling smart-phone users to access more detailed audio descriptions. A printed brochure is also available to guide you around this innovative urban exhibition, where you will also be able to admire the recent renovation work carried out in the area. The brochure is available from the Hôtel de Ville, the Town Hall in La Butte and the Tourist Office. An electronic version is downloadable from www.ville-cherbourg.fr On the streets of Les Provinces, Octeville. Free

7th Biennal of the 9th Art : Tardi Until 1st September

Organised jointly by the Cherbourg-Octeville Artothèque and the Thomas-Henry Museum of Art, the Biennale of the 9th art is dedicated to one author’s comic strips. Following Loustal, Hugo Pratt and Moebius, Jacques Tardi is the guest star of this 7th edition. A leading light of the contemporary comic strip artists, Tardi’s central theme is history. The common thread of many of his works is The Great War (Le Trou d’obus, C’était la guerre des tranchées / Shell-hole, Trench Warfare). He is also interested in literature, and has adapted the work of others into comic strips, e.g. Jean Vautrin (Le cri du peuple / The Cry of the People) and Léo Mallet (Nestor Burma). His series of Adèle Blanc-Sec stories is a reinvention of the soap opera style literature of the Belle Epoque. Jacques Tardi’s style is based on a documentary realism, tinged with fantasy and expressionism. Through two hundred original drawings and prints, the Biennial event provides a retrospective of the work of this respected contemporary comic strip creator. Salons de l’Hôtel de Ville (entrance in Rue de la Paix), from Tuesday to Saturday 10am to midday and 2pm to 6pm, Sunday 2pm to 6pm. Free entry.

The cOnquest Of the west: impressiOnist pOsters Of NOrmandy sea-side resOrts Until 29th September In the 19th century, the fashion for sea bathing, imported from England, transformed the Normandy coastline into a veritable haven for good health and pleasurable moments. Former fishing villages became sea-side resorts, endowed with modern and attractive recreational facilities. The first posters advertising tourism appeared at the beginning of the 1880s. From Granville to Tréport, and Urville to Cherbourg, the sea-side resorts were quick to promote their attractions: hotels, casinos, tempting bathing waters, water sports… Through this exhibition, featuring the most beautiful posters from the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, the ThomasHenry Museum of Art and the Manoir du Tourp tell the story of the early days of the Normandy sea-side resorts. Organised in the framework of Impressionist Normandy.
