FREE CULTURAL EVENTS DURING THE SUMMER ENGLISH SELECTION

Lausanne Estivale is much more than a festival. For 40 years, this event has been relaying and supporting a large number of cultural players and their artistic proposals. The result is a multidisciplinary offer (dance, music, theatre, cinema, walks, tours, activities, etc.) that reaches all audiences. Expressed in figures, it represents hundreds of cultural and free activities, all for free, over a duration of three months - June 11th to September 23rd 2016. Amongst the cultural events of the summer, here is a selection we offer our Englishspeaking guests. Enjoy your summer in Lausanne with Lausanne Estivale! Concerts and visits of Lausanne Cathedral Come and listen under the Cathedral’s vaults to the works of Bach, Debussy, Mesner, Liszt or Vivaldi, performed by the Société des Concerts de la Cathédrale de Lausanne, and attend the masses organised with the participation of the Petits Chanteurs de Lausanne accompanied by the unique sound of the organ, an instrument with 7,000 pipes. Gospel Air Festival: Oh Happy Day!

Mozart in the City - Requiem

Twenty-seven choirs will make the town centre reverberate by performing a capella gospel on five stages between the Riponne Square and Saint-François. The Gospel Festival’s final concert will take place in Lausanne Cathedral with over 700 choir singers and musicians, on Sunday.

Freeing Mozart from the temples of culture, giving a wide audience the opportunity to discover a masterpiece in a version for choir by the Pro Arte Choir of Lausanne. Soloists and four accordions that is both professional and fun, emotional and relaxed, demonstrating that ‘great’ music, as all music, is able to communicate emotions, tears, joy and hope, all of this in the magical and natural setting of the town of Lausanne’s most beautiful parks.

Music in museums Three Lausanne museums welcome musicians from the EJMA (School of Jazz and Modern Music) for original experiences and tailor-made sounds. June 25th – 8.30 pm During the Nuit des Images, students from the Lausanne School of Jazz and Modern Music set the evening to music in the magnificent gardens of the Musée de l’Elysée. June 30th – 6 pm At the Cantonal Museum of Zoology, the Jazz School choir will put the finishing touches to the work of two taxidermists with a concert. July 2nd – 6 pm At the Musée de l’Hermitage, several works from the extraordinary exhibition “Basquiat, Dubuffet, Soulages...” are set to music, followed by a Funk-Motown concert. Classical music concerts with the Lausanne Camerata The Camerata directed by Pierre Amoyal has invited renowned musicians for two exceptional concerts: June 28th – 8 pm Jean-Marc Luisada for a piano concerto by Chopin at the Casino de Montbenon, Paderweski Hall September 4th – 6.15 pm The André Fischer and Sébastian Singer duo performs works by Vivaldi and Piazzolla at the Olympic Museum. Baroque music concerts with the Lausanne Sinfonietta Discover two masterpieces of Baroque music, specially written by Handel to be performed outdoors. “Music for the Royal Fireworks” and “Water Music” are performed by the Lausanne Sinfonietta. A geometrically variable orchestra A hub of creativity, the Eustache association brings together a constellation of musicians. In a small combo or in an orchestra, with all their diversity and unbridled dynamism, musical languages are multiple (rock, classic, jazz, buitism, etc.). This year, a distinguished guest coming from Canton in China, followed by three concerts that demonstrate the extent of their talent. Not to be missed. July 15st, 8.30 pm

The Festival de la Cité Six nights of cultural effervescence with creations, shows and concerts in many locations across the town. 2016 Euro Football Final set to music The 2016 Euro football final will be broadcast live on a giant screen in the Saint-François Church and set to music on the great organs by Loïc Mallié, an internationally renowned organist and composer. While sportsmen compete on a giant screen, music will accompany their moves. Loïc Mallié is a professor at the Conservatoire National Supérieur Musique et Danse de Lyon as well as at Musikene, the Higher School of Music of San Sebastián (Spain). Lausanne discovery tours The Lausanne welcome guides offer four visits to discover some of our town’s historical places and buildings. You will discover the history of the century-old Sacré-Coeur Church, visit the Town Hall, the municipal power’s prestigious headquarters and fall under the spell of the Mon-Repos illustrious residence, the IOC’s first headquarters in Lausanne, or stroll the cobblestone streets in the Cité district that forms Lausanne’s heart and emblem. The Art Brut gardens Open-Air Screenings & concert Every year, the Collection de l’Art Brut (Outsider Art Collection) opens its gardens to the public for an evening of screening. This year, the film shown will be ‘André et les martiens’ (‘Andrew and the Martians’) by Philippe Lespinasse: a peregrination to meet Outsider Art authors in the company of André Robillard. Opening act: a concert by Albin de la Simone. The museum will stay open until 9 pm and a food truck located in the garden will offer drinks and catering.

French song concerts on the Montbenon Esplanade Lausanne University organises during the summer French lessons open to students from the world over. To punctuate the different sessions, three renowned artists from western Switzerland will give voice at the Montbenon open-air theatre. Virtuosos and apprentice virtuosos Pierre Amoyal (violin) and Pavel Gililov (piano), professors at the Salzburg Mozarteum, share their experience during the lessons on the interpretation of sonatas addressed to ten selected violin-piano duos from all over the world. The public is invited to attend the lessons as auditors. The students from the Lausanne Music Academy give a recital to wind up these encounters, and Pierre Amoyal and Pavel Gililov perform three sonatas for violin and piano (Francis Poulenc, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart,

A budding symphony It is at the end of 12 days of intensive rehearsals in a small village of the Vaud Alps that 70 young Swiss musicians, aged 8 to 15, offer a symphonic programme comprising the works of Puccini, Kodaly and Khachaturian. The 2016 programme alludes to music from the Balkans, integrating several traditional world instruments. An original concert performed by budding artists. August 1st – National Day On the first of August, celebrations for the Swiss National Day take place with a band and procession in the town of Lausanne. It is also the day of the famous August 1st picnic – starting at 11 am – in one of Lausanne’s most beautiful parks to savour local artisan produce with your feet in the grass, overlooking Lake Geneva. As from 12 am, refreshment stalls and activities take place at the Place de la Navigation. And to top it off, fireworks will be set off on Lake Geneva starting at 10.15 pm. Festival of Electronic Music: Les Digitales Relaxing on your deck chair or lying in the grass, come and listen to the best there is in electronic, experimental and contemporary sounds in the exceptional setting of the Denantou Park, a stone throw from the lakeside. It’s a unique opportunity to discover up-and-coming talents and internationally renowned artists. Free admission, stalls with artisan food and drinks. Festival of Improvised Music The Festival of Improvised Music instils in a “classical” concert the spirit that usually reigns in jazz or popular music. During the day, musicians benefit from the instruction of concert artists and in the evening, audiences discover lively music, created on the spot. It is not rare for listeners to suggest themes to the improvisers. The concert then becomes a real interplay between the musician and his audience. Five unmissable dates. String quartet concert with Sine Nomine A beautiful moment of intimate music at twilight, Arlaud Square, by the musicians of the Sine Nomine Quartet that browses through the various repertoires of chamber music, from Brahms to Balissat, from Schubert to Dusapin. Singing all together The time has come to gather at the foot of the Cathedral and discover the programme put together by the musicians for this event that has become legendary.
