LETTER FROM THE

EDI TORS EMILY RIBICK & CARLY HILL

As the semester creeps closer towards holiday break, we begin to think more and more about the future and what’s to come. Whether you’re a freshmen deciding if you can handle ISS 215 and CHM 141 come spring, a seasoned upperclassman hunting for the perfect part-time internship, or a senior wondering when, how and if you can handle the daunting task that is job hunting, we’re all being propelled forward. But no matter how well you prepare for new opportunities, you can’t ignore the importance of where you started from. Our roots constantly shape who we go on to be. We wouldn’t have ever become Editors-in-Chief of Michigan State’s one-and-only fashion publication if we didn’t start out as clueless but ambitious first-year MSU students with a desire to get involved. Certain aspects of who we are will be a part of us no matter what major we choose, job we apply for, or city we might move to.

This perfectly describes the philosophy behind VIM’s fall issue. Our directors dug deep into what VIM has always been about—promoting style, inclusion, individuality and confidence to MSU students and the greater East Lansing community—and worked together to help the magazine grow. We could not be more proud of the entire VIM team for accomplishing major strides this semester. We’re incredibly humbled to work alongside of such an immensely talented group of people with incredible vision, insight and passion. While we can’t ever exactly predict what the future holds, we can promise readers to be excited for what’s to come for VIM this year. As college students, we’re conditioned to obsess over where we might end up. While goals are never a bad thing, we’re here to remind you to take a pregnant pause—while you work towards the future, take a moment to be proud of who you are and how far you’ve come.

Color Me

CAMEL

NO. 21

Designers are choosing camel this fall. Although the hue is a neutral color, camel’s reoccurring runway appearances prove its ability to create an eye-catching look that’s both sophisticated and simple. Adding camel to your wardrobe will add a polish and refined flare to your fall ensemble. Colorful accents, like satchels and cashmere scarves, offer a quick, effortless way to spice up an ordinary outfit. Want to go bolder with this trend? Camel pea coats, pencil skirts, and pumps are all fantastic pieces to add to your ever-growing closet. For a more refined trend, try additional black and white accents that will highlight the camel hue. No matter how you wear it, this classic color will make you feel confident whether you are strutting down Farm Lane or 5th Avenue. MEGAN YOUNG & JULIA GOULET

folklore

When the temperature drops mid-November we become inspired by the season—fall leaves and holiday movies. However, this November designers are finding unexpected inspiration in Eastern Europe. Valentino, Suno, and Prabal Gurung are just a few designers showcasing how Eastern Europe’s folk culture, with its traditional prints and cuts for everyday women in countries like Romania and Slovakia, is influencing our wardrobes. The faux fur collars and structured olive embroidered trench coats of Prabal Gurung, as well as the whimsical, yet traditional, floral patterns shown in both Suno’s and Red Valentino’s collections, demonstrate the folk trend’s diversity and dynamism. Anyone can achieve the boho-folk look with a paisley peasant blouse, a Swiss braid, strong brows and a faux fur gilet. Affordable brands such as Anthropologie, Free People, Zara, H&M, and Urban Outfitters add a bit of couture to our daily lives. TANYA SHEIKH Floral Smock Top, $30, BOOHOO

MAN-UP This season, designers have taken on the challenge of re-defining the modern-day tomboy by trading in frumpy flannel for structured suiting and timeless textiles. Whether you’re mad about plaid or prone to herringbone, this new trend will help you achieve the classic refinement you’ve always wanted. Ready-to-wear collections from designers such as Tommy Hilfiger, Proenza Schouler, and Haider Ackerman featured looks ranging from feminine fashions constructed of classic men’s fabrics to oversized outerwear with streamlined silhouettes. To achieve the proper balance between feminized fits and classic masculine prints into your everyday wardrobe, try a colorful checkered wool mini skirt with a cashmere cardigan. As the autumn air becomes crisp and cool, feel free to top off your ensemble with a camel-colored, double-breasted pea coat with a boyfriend silhouette. Wanting a more laid-back approach to obtaining this look? This trend serves as the perfect excuse to break out those black harem pants you’ve been so hesitant to sport on campus. When paired with a tucked-in chiffon tank, a structured houndstooth blazer, and leopard-print “smoking flats” you can achieve a casual, yet sophisticated outfit appropriate for anything from an interview at the Broad to a dinner-date at HopCat. The mix of modern tailoring and classic prints will create a look that’s sharp by day and sleek by night. JULIA GOULET

50 SHADES OF GREY A classic color can be an outfit’s finishing touch. Neutrals often provide the framework for an outfit, so new ways of incorporating shades can seem difficult. Grey is one of those staple neutral colors, but it’s also the perfect complement to fall and winter trends. In anticipation for the movie release of the best selling novel, Fifty Shades of Grey, we’ve proven how powerful grey can be. Grey is elegant yet rebellious, and looks great on everyone. TWEED:

YO U R N E W B E ST FR I EN D Tweed is a heavy, wool fabric that is popular in colder places like northern Europe (and potentially the walk to your 8 a.m. class). Yes, older men normally wear it, but your sport coat and blazer selection could use a versatile addition. Transition into the colder months by including a navy, tweed blazer into your rotation. Any type of zipper will instantly take your look to an edgier place. Be careful, though, as too much detailing can look tacky. There’s that memorable scene in “Crazy, Stupid Love” when Steve Carrell goes shopping with Ryan Gosling and riiiiipppppppp, he pulls out his velco-wallet. This is a scene that should never (as in, ever) be enacted is real life. A proper wallet is the sign of a gentleman. There’s no real way around that. The good thing, though, is that there are a variety of ways to carry your cash and cards that lend themselves to personal style and a budget. Let’s take a look:

Card Case Sleek. Modern. Masculine. A card case is perfect for traveling, especially when having your credit cards is easier than carrying cash. (This style will also fit comfortably in your front pocket in case you’re afraid of being pickpocketed). Just slip all of your cards into the pouches and jet off. It’s really that easy.

Money Clip

In the pursuit of a compact way to carry cash and cards, money clips were born. The device is generally a single piece of metal that is folded in half to allow notes to be inserted. The trick with this type is to make it your own; they are made out of a variety of metals including silver, gold or even titanium. There are a million different ways to personalize it – deciding on a specific metal, getting your initials engraved or adding precious stones. The sky is the limit with what you can do!

GOING GRAPHIC

RAINIE JIANG & BRYTANIE KILLEBREW

When a trend appears on runway collections and on the streets, it’s a big deal. Graphic sweatshirts have taken fashion culture by storm and it’s easy to see why - they’re comfortable, easy to pair with other pieces and often times carry a specific brand signature. Givenchy was one of the earliest designers to show this trend with its “Rottweiler” and “Madonna” print. After this innovative move by designer Ricardo Tisci, printed sweatshirts quickly appeared in the collections of many influential designers including Kenzo, Raf Simons, Comme de Garçon and Neil Barrett. More brands are now incorporating this trend into their seasonal collections to offer a variety of price points for socialites and students alike.

BOLD &

beautiful The days of excessively tweezing and waxing your eyebrows are gone. Runway and red carpet starlets are showing that now is the time to let brows run free. Full, dark and elongated brows are being worn with pride on supermodels like Cara Delevingne and movie stars like Lily Collins and Emma Watson. JADE WISELOGEL

GET THE LOOK: Eyebrows have the power to add symmetry and frame to your features, but unfortunately not all of us were graced with fierce, thick brows like Delevingne. Luckily, we can still achieve fuller brows without the help of genetics. To get a natural-looking brow, the first step is to define the natural shape of the arch with a brow comb. You should comb outward and upward in order to find any holes or sparse areas. Next, use a brow pencil to fill in the thinner areas and lightly line beneath the brow to define its natural shape. Using your choice of powder or pencil, fill in the rest of the brow. Start at the outer edge of your nose and stop around a 45-degree angle from the outer corner of the eye.

HELPFUL TIP: Eyebrows are slightly lighter near the nose and grow darker toward the arch. To avoid looking too harsh, use a pencil or powder that is no more than two shades darker or lighter than your hair color. To set your brows in place all day, be sure to comb through them with a brow gel or clear mascara.

Thanksgiving Pumpkin spice looks twice as nice on the eyes. Thanksgiving is all about the warm neutrals, so keep your eye makeup simple while enjoying family time. Tarina Tarantino’s Jewel Shadow Palette in Dreamy is great for late-autumn. A soft, wavy half-up style is low maintenance and will keep the hair out of your face while you indulge in turkey dinner. Use a 1-inch curling wand for loose waves and bobby pins to keep your hair in place.

Christmas Feel like you’re seeing a whole lot of green and red? Embrace it! Whip out your favorite red lipstick and line your eyes with an emerald green for a classic holiday look that makes every eye color pop. Tightly woven tendrils make for a great party look or a day spent with the family. Section your locks into three separate parts and curl with a onehalf inch barrel.

New Years Why not ring in 2014 looking sultry? Stand out with a silver smoky eye. You can’t go wrong with silver shadow, as it has a way of complimenting all eye colors and skin tones. A sleek side pony will have you looking prim and proper with just the right amount of edge. Use a smoothing serum to keep your hair luminous and frizz-free even after the ball drops.

day Whether you’re headed out for a full day of classes or a shopping trip with friends, keep things light during the day with a modest amount of makeup on the eyes and skin. Finish up the look with shaded brows and lavish, berrycolored lips.

EYES • Using one to two shades darker than your natural color, fill in brows for a fuller, sharper look. • Dab the creases of your eyes with a matte brown and a touch of Vaseline on the moveable part of the lid to produce a glossy effect. • A soft cream shade can be added to the brow bone to liven up the eyes.

SKIN • Highlight cheeks with a subtle, pinky blush to attain a delicate, day-appropriate look. • Apply a bit of highlight to the nose, cheeks, and forehead to help skin radiate.

LIPS • Trace lips with a nude liner. Why nude? It’s versatile and can be used for any shade of lipstick you choose! • Color lips using a berry pink. Check out our choice—Wet N Wild’s Sugar Plum Fairy.

DAytoNIGHT:

night When it comes to your makeup, adding a little drama to your night isn’t such a bad thing. Minimal blush and subtle lips work to make eyes the center of this look. Amplified with a blend of matte browns and shades of gray, the term eye-catching becomes all the more literal.

EYES • Lay down a primer to ensure shadow stays intact all night long. • Apply a warm brown to the crease of the eye and highlight the brow bone with a matte cream. • Add charcoal shadow to the outer corner and a light brown to the inner to make eyes appear larger. • Top off the upper lid with a matte silver shadow for a striking effect. • Apply a bolder gray to your bottom lash line and smoke it out using a thin pencil brush for longer-lasting power.

SKIN • After laying down a light primer, brush cheeks with bronzer to create a heavy contour that is evening-appropriate. • Apply a pinky blush to cheeks in a circular motion. • Lastly, add a shimmery champagne highlight to cheekbones to give skin that extra glow. Try our choice—Urban Decay’s Eyeshadow Primer Potion Tube in Sin.

LIPS • Begin by lining with a nude pencil. • Create this rosy pink shade by blending pink and nude and apply with a brush.

HOT in here Hot yoga is something to sweat about

Twisting your body into contorted positions for over an hour in a room hotter than Cancun may seem miserable at first, but trust us, hot yoga is completely worth the sweat. Yoga classrooms are set at 105+ degrees to help loosen body muscles, allowing you to stretch deeper into “downward dog,” while releasing all of the harmful chemicals (margaritas anyone?) you may have consumed. One single hour of hot yoga can burn up to 1,000 calories and dramatically increase weight loss and flexibility. Even if you can’t touch your toes and haven’t been to the gym in years, you CAN do hot yoga and experience a multitude of benefits. According to yoga specialists, hot yoga boasts more than a great workout. “Hot yoga relieves stress and increases happiness,” said Patty Sutherland, owner of East Lansing Hot Yoga. “We’re a real community. We take yoga seriously. Our members become family.” At Sutherland’s studio in East Lansing, all students are welcome to practice yoga in a welcoming, stressfree environment, regardless of their experience level. East Lansing Hot Yoga offers a series of yoga postures along with flow and breathing exercises designed to provide a challenging and rejuvenating yoga experience. Hot yoga provides the perfect break from studying for final exams and a more fulfilling way to keep both your body and mind in shape. Consider us hooked; hot yoga is totally worth the sweat. Cooking101:

Spicing up the menu Tired of the same old cafeteria menu? Today’s lesson in Cooking 101 is how to spice up your tray. Just because class is boring doesn’t mean the cafeteria has to be too. CHLOE WESTLEY

Thai Chicken

Breakfast Burrito If breakfast is starting to get boring, add a little flair from south of the border. Ask a chef where you can find a tortilla. Add a layer of salsa from the condiment table and scrambled eggs from the breakfast station on your tortilla, wrap it up, and you have a breakfast burrito.

Deviled Eggs This treat is easily made without having to run all over the entire cafeteria. Cut the hard-boiled eggs found in most breakfast stations in half. Take out the yoke and mix it with the condiment’s section mayo, mustard, salt and pepper. Scoop up your new concoction and refill the egg white. If you’d like an extra kick to your deviled egg, bacon bits from the salad bar are a tasty extra.

Rootbeer Floats For dessert, an easy way to make your typical soft serve ice cream more exciting is to hit up the beverage station. Root beer floats anyone? It’s as easy as partially filling up your cup with vanilla ice cream and picking out your favorite pop. While root beer is a classic, we suggest you try Sunkist in your float instead.

Wishing Brody had a Thai food section? It’s easy to make your own Thai style sauce. In the condiment section, just mix peanut butter and a little bit of hot sauce. Sriracha works best if you can find it. Next, walk over to the sushi station and ask for some soy sauce. Mix those three together and you have an amazing Thai peanut sauce. Walk over to the “American Cuisine” station and ask for a grilled piece of chicken without the bun, and then ask for rice from the stir-fry station and done! You’ve saved yourself a trip to NoThai. 37

A favorite phrase, word or quote is easy to showcase in this DIY. The best part of this project is that it’s classy, simple and cheap. It’ll not only function as a great accent, but also incorporate one of interior design’s most important principles into your space: repetition.

Artwork doesn’t have to be just a painting! Creating art pieces for your shelves and desk is also a great way to add visual interest to your space. Don’t worry, these pieces are also affordable and really easy to make!

Materials: Canvas (size of your choice) White and black paint Large and small paintbrush Pencil

Materials: Double-sided tape Plastic spoons Clear plastic cups Candle Scissors 1. First, detach the handles from about 20-40 plastic spoons. Then, start gluing or taping the spoon heads onto a plastic cup, beginning at the top. 2. Alternate in between each spoon and continue down until you get to the bottom. Don't attach spoons to the bottom because you want it to stand up right! 3. Place a tea light in the bottom of the cup and voilà! You now have a beautiful lantern for your space.

1. First, paint your canvas white with the large paintbrush for a clean, even finish. 2. Once dry, pencil out your favorite phrase, word or quote in the font of your choice. 3. Paint over your penciled marks in black paint with the small paintbrush. 4. You’re done! Simple as that.

TIPS:

40

Hang your artwork in a well-lit room and preferably at eye level. You can get frames for your artwork at thrift stores that have a vintage look and are affordable! When arranging a cluster of artwork on the wall, start from the middle and work your way out. It will gradually develop its own shape. Remember, it doesn’t have to be perfect!

Vintage to Vogue During the fall, campus is bustling with students who are packing dorm rooms to the brim, receiving their very first apartment keys and unloading fully-packed U-Hauls into empty houses. Once you’re all settled in, it’s time to make this new space your own. With papers and exams piling up and your bank account’s dwindling, a DIY furniture project doesn’t have to consume all your free time or drain the money you’ve set aside for this weekend’s festivities. WHAT TO LOOK FOR

The most difficult part of searching for pieces is envisioning new possibilities. These are some key points to keep in mind. Check for damages - is the item beyond repair? Is the surface paintable? Do the dimensions and proportions work for your space? Does it meet your goals for function and storage?

WHAT TO DO NEXT

There are some simple alterations you can make to a piece that will completely transform its look. Before applying paint, be sure to sandpaper the piece and wash it off Spray paint is your best friend Reupholster with a funky new fabric Add some great new hardware

CLEVER CLOVER

C

lever Clover is that new boutique that’s been catching your eye on Grand River Avenue. It’s located between Abbot Road and M.A.C. Avenue and is owned by Holly Mead, who also owns the boutique, Mad Eagle (301 M.A.C. Ave.). Meade has had her eye on this location because of its 1920s glass window front that would give her boutique the vintage-look she was looking for. While drawing up interior design plans, Mead and her husband decided to create a boutique in the most environmentally friendly way. Her husband built the floors, which came from old gymnasium bleacher seats, and he also built the countertop, which came from an old bowling lane. The boutique’s unique design and creative décor create a vintage-like atmosphere for its customers. Although located directly on Michigan State University’s campus, the boutique has

been drawing in women of all ages. Clever Clover’s name originated from Mead’s jewelry line, Clever Clover, which she created with help from her sister and her husband. The boutique features many of her jewelry creations along with other vintage-inspired jewelry from various designers. Store manager, Taylor Varner, said two of the most popular brands that Clever Clover carries are Free People and Billabong. They’ve also brought in new lines that even Mad Eagle doesn’t carry, such as Blu Pepper and YUMI. If you haven’t already, stop in and check out Clever Clover. The boutique carries a massive amount of scarves, hats, giftware, candles, jewelry and other unique accessories for your home. MARLEE DELANEY 51

Fall asleep on a library desk. Statistics show that 99.98% of college students end up drooling on their textbooks upwards of three times before they graduate. You are not alone drooly-Julie. Say “I haven’t slept in three days,” when you actually mean “I’ve been staying up all night and taking nine hours naps for the past three days.” Listen to classical music! Music with lyrics can make multitasking difficult. Spend two days making flash cards not absorbing anything while watching reruns of ‘Girls.’

Use apps like ‘Self Control’ to block distracting websites for any given period of time you chose. Trust us, you really don’t need Facebook to tell you how your high school’s horse girl just got a new infinity sign tattoo on her wrist at a time like this.

MITTEN MIXtape Update your playlist with songs by these mid-Michigan artists. EMILY CRACOLICI Artist: Wayne Szalinski // Song: Sweetness // Listen if you like: The Smiths, Two Door Cinema Club, Tokyo Police Club Self-proclaimed as “cool” and “sweet,” these East Lansing natives are living up to expectations. Quirky t o n e s mixed with Andy Milad’s eclectic voice combine to produce a diverse sound that is distinct in each song. Their first self-titled EP just came out in September 2012, and their most recent album, Fondly Truly, was released this past April. Watch ‘em live at Mac’s Bar on December 13th. Artist: Cheap Girls // Song: Ft. Lauderdale // Listen if you like: The Gaslight Anthem, Frightened Rabbit, The Replacements Formed in 2007, this trio grew up playing in bands around the Lansing area. While they have self-identified as “a simple rock band,”—as it is composed solely of guitar, bass, drums, and vocals— Cheap Girls is far from average. They produce a raw sound with straightforward yet thought-provoking lyrics. The band is currently working on their fourth studio album and will be at Mac’s Bar in Lansing on November 23rd. So order a vinyl, strum along with your friends, and crack open a PBR. Artist: Frank Hudson // Song: Move Me (ft. Alexa Lusader) // Listen if you like: Ellie Goulding, Kaskade, Pretty Lights You’ll find Frank Hudson spinning all around the Lansing area. He’s an up-and-coming EDM guru who will undoubtedly leave you feeling ready to dance. Whether you’re headed to a house party or taking a cruise on the Riverboat, turn this up and get weird.

Artist: Mike Mains and the Branches // Song: Noises // Listen if you like: The Killers, Manchester Orchestra, Bright Eyes Originally formed in Texas, this gang made its way up to Michigan and has spent last three years leaving its mark on indie rock. Some of their songs give off a chill, southern vibe, while others feature pop-punk choral chants. They released their debut album, Home, in 2012, followed by an EP in 2013. They show no sign of slowing down, as their sophomore album, Calm Down, Everything is Fine, is slated to release in early 2014. It looks like the sky’s the limit for this trio. Artist: The Bard Owls // Song: No Tracks // Listen if you like: Mumford & Sons, She & Him, Sufjan Stevens This group of owls is based out of East Lansing and became a group in 2011 after playing together in a folk music class here at MSU. Actually, it turns out that four of the five band members are students or graduates of MSU’s Residential College in the Arts and Humanities (RCAH). A blend folk and gospel music, this group creates an innovative and unforgettable sound. You’ll hear banjos, fiddles, mandolins, and even a washtub bass when you listen to these guys. They also do great pop and alternative covers, including an incredible version of MGMT’s “Kids.” You won’t want to miss them live at Mac’s Bar on December 6th or at REACH Studio Art Center on December 7th.

SPARTAN OF THE MONTH

International Relations Major

KARA BREWER Meet Kara Brewer, our November Spartan of the Month. This international relations senior has gone above and beyond the academic, extracurricular and volunteer standards of other students, all while putting her best fashion-foot forward. Although Kara is one busy lady, she manages to place academics above all else. Her impressive 3.94 GPA as an international relations major in James Madison College certainly demonstrates her passion for international development. She’s also on her way towards earning minor in French and a specialization in business. Other than her outstanding GPA, Kara has earned additional academic credentials as a member of Michigan State University’s Honors College and an elected member of MSU’s 2013 Homecoming Court. Kara continued her passion for academics in the summer of 2012 when she traveled to Tours, France during a study abroad. You might assume with credentials like that Kara would spend 99% in club lib, but extracurricular activities consume most of her free time. In 2010, Kara became a research scholar in MSU’s Language Acquisition Lab, and eventual-

ly was given the opportunity to present her findings at the Boston University Conference on Language Acquisition and Development – the most influential conference in the world on this topic. From 2011 through May of 2013, Kara was heavily involved with Alternative Spartan Breaks, a not-for-profit organization that allows MSU students to travel around the world on various different social service trips during the university’s winter and spring breaks. During her involvement with the organization, Kara led a group of MSU students on a service trip to Washington D.C., where they lived in and served one of the largest homeless shelters in the nation’s capitol. She also orchestrated numerous fundraisers for the organization while she was a member of its executive board. Kara has also been involved with the Associated Students of Michigan State University (ASMSU) for multiple years. This year, Kara is a member of the senior class council where she is working to provide funding to students who accept unpaid internships. She’s also a member of MSU’s famous marching band! You can catch Kara rocking out on

alto saxophone during any of our home football games. Kara has been fortunate enough to have professional experience other international relations gurus might kill for. In 2012, Kara was the precinct captain for Andrea Larkin’s campaign for district court judge. Under this position, Kara helped register students to vote and planned debates, which she found incredibly rewarding. This past summer, Kara had the opportunity to work at the Financial Services Volunteer Corps as a program development intern (a mouthful, we know) in New York City. Kara got to present information on nations with developing markets, like Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Jordan and Libya, and explain what they could be doing to achieve greater business development and economic sustainability. A pretty insane opportunity for an undergraduate! She even drafted proposals to the U.S. Department of State under this position. So at the end of the day, what’s Kara’s game plan? Kara says her dream job is to eventually end up back at MSU as a James Madison professor—quite the admirable answer. Until then, Kara is excited to see what international development opportunities are waiting for her out in the “real world,” and so are we.

Kara's Fashion Inspiration: Kara’s fashion sense has been heavily influenced by some of her favorite places—France and New York City. Her staple going-to-class ensemble usually pairs a vintage, thrift-store dress with a classic black leather jacket and a Parisian scarf for an added pop of color. EMILY RIBICK

SPARTAN SUCCESS

NATE ERICKSON If you want to be in New York City, you have to go allout. Just ask Nate Erickson, a Michigan State alum who worked two internships when he graduated in 2009, one paid, one unpaid. Nate believes that although he struggled in the beginning, the end result was totally worth it. Now, as the social media editor at GQ Magazine, it’s clear that those internships were valuable stepping-stones that paid off big time. Read on for some killer advice from a fellow Spartan. ADAM ILENICH Adam Ilenich: How does one “get their foot in the door” in the fashion magazine industry? How does one stand out among thousands of other college applicants? Nate Erickson: The fashion magazine industry is definitely a tough nut to crack. I had a rather strange path of getting there, but honestly that’s part of the game where it comes down to who you know. Fortunately, thanks to Twitter, it’s easier to get into those circles than ever. You just have to find a way to make the right people interested in what you have to say—so be funny, be useful, be provocative, and try to use Twitter as a conversation tool, more than broadcasting yourself. Find the people you want to know and just go for it! AI: Do you think an unpaid summer internship with a well-known fashion-related company is worth it? Many interns say they don’t get to see much of the actual work but end up doing typical “intern” grunt work. NE: The public relations industry is a little bit better at providing valuable internship experience, though I remember after graduating when I couldn’t receive so much as a rejection letter. The good news is that a ton of Michigan State’s Public Relation’s Student Society Association’s (PRSSA) alumni wound up in great agencies. Our president when I was there, Nick Lucido, is killing it over at Edelman in Chicago. Another friend of mine

from the same group is at Weber Shandwick. Personally, public relation’s agencies ended up not being entirely my thing, and it was right around that time that an old connection I had connected me to the right people who were looking to launch a social media strategy at Vanity Fair. The rest is sort of history from there, but it all goes back to that one person that I met—through Twitter. AI: How did you get to where you are now? What experiences did you have that you think really helped you out? NE: I think an unpaid internship is definitely worth it if you can afford it— I had to work two internships when I came out of college, one paid, one unpaid, and it was a bit of a struggle at first, but worth it in the end. I wanted to be in New York City and convinced myself I’d probably have to go all-in to do it. The majority of my fellow colleagues at GQ all started as interns before they ended up getting hired here. If you can land an internship somewhere you like, weigh the pros and cons. You’ll gain experience, but most importantly, it’s a great way to meet the right people.

LOOK GOOD, DO GOOD

Krochet Kids I N T E R N AT I O N A L As demand for their hats grew, so did their dreams. The team decided to expand their hobby to outside of the United States. Their idea was to teach women of developing countries a skill like crocheting so they could change their economic status and break the cycle of poverty. Knit-wearing trendsetters are not the only ones who have taken notice of this inspirational non-profit. Big name retailers from Nordstrom to Whole Foods have begun selling Krochet Kids’ products. Based in Costa Mesa, CA, Krochet Kids make it a priority to let their customers have an understanding of how each purchase gives back to someone less fortunate. Each Krochet Kids product has the signature of the woman who knit it written on the tag. The company currently has projects located in Uganda and Peru, both of which are focused on providing mentorship and education to the women involved in the creation of Krochet Kids International. Keep an eye on this dynamic team. Since receiving its non-profit status in 2008, they have grown to over 150 employees. They are currently looking to hire interns and are set on expanding their project sites to other developing areas around the world. LINDSAY HENDERSON

PREVIEW TO SPRING

Colder weather means time for football games, family holidays, pumpkin spice lattes and most importantly, fashion week! While we may have just slipped on our boots and added a few more layers, this past September helped us look forward to warmer weather again. So start making room in your closet for next year's must-have looks. CARLY HILL

Ladies, keep working on those abs because crop tops aren’t going away anytime soon! The Spring 2014 runway continued to show us that this trend is still hot as ever. This spring, focus more on the decade that truly showcased the crop top -- the 90s. Stick to a minimalist look with crop tops in classic black and white or bright neons.

This spring it’s all about comfort when it comes to pants. The runway this spring taught us that it's time to put away the skinny jeans and slip on a pair of slouchy trousers. Try a monochromatic head to toe look in neutral colors for daytime and pair with a stacked heel to make an entrance at night.
