Hannah Watts Okay – I can only write 200-300 words in this little space so I’m about to make them meaningful. If there’s one thing you take away from reading this, it’s to work towards your dreams. No dream comes true just because you want it to. There are a lot of dreamers, and a lot of doers, but it takes a lot of both dreaming and doing to truly succeed. Stay focused, but don’t be so busy doing that you miss out on the wonderful opportunities and people around you. I’ll be the first to admit that I have two, count them, two planners. I write everything down. I’ll also be the first to say not everything is going to happen exactly as you plan. When I joined VIM as a freshman, I did not plan to become its co-Editor-in-Chief. I was looking for a place to

It’s crazy to think that in a few weeks many of us will officially become alumni of Michigan State University. Or is the correct term alumnus? Either way, it feels wrong referring to myself as anything other than a student. I must be going through an identity crisis of sorts… the real-world is calling my name, but I’m not quite ready to enter it. Let’s face it – I still have a lot to learn. But I think that the reality is, even after graduation, we never stop being students. MSU has not only prepared us to face the worlds greatest challenges, but it has also instilled in us the desire to learn. In our new careers, new cities, new lives – there will always be something to study, a test to prepare for, a late night project to complete. And while we’ll no longer be on MSU’s comforting campus, we’ll always have the Spartan family cheering us on.
fit in, a place to turn my love for beauty and fashion into something tangible, and this was it. Embrace both the no’s and the yeses when you get them, and embrace them gracefully. You will get both. I’ve gotten both. The right doors will open and the wrong ones will close. I guess that’s what this is – graduation. It’s the closing of one door and the opening of another. It’s terrifying and exhilarating. Thank you to my family, friends, bosses, mentors, acquaintances and the MSU community for helping me get to the point where I can step confidently through this open door, towards the future – which, when you’re a Spartan, will always be green.

Before I say my goodbyes to the school and city I’ve called home for the past four years, I’d like to say thank you to everyone who has been a part of my college experience. I feel lucky to have met such wonderful people during my time here. I know we’ll all cross paths again. I have to give a huge thank you to VIM’s directors and staff, who put in countless hours of work this entire year. To all the businesses and organizations that continue to help VIM grow, we are astounded by your generosity. And of course, thank you to my parents, for supporting me in more ways than I can name. So, instead of referring to myself as an MSU alum after graduation, I think I’ll just stick to calling myself a Spartan from here on out.

from night to day College fashion is infamously known for the “I woke up like this” aesthetic. Students are often seen strolling through campus in last night’s attire no matter what day of the week it is. No, it’s not what you’re thinking, but something more contented and socially acceptable: sleepwear as daywear. However, the college student approach differs greatly from the one seen during fashion week and on the streets of New York, Paris and Milan. Recently, the runways have adopted this age-old millennial trend with a sophisticated and sexy twist. During Spring/ Summer 2016 Fashion Week, top designers such as Givenchy and Balenciaga debuted their collections with a strong nod to sleepwear. At Balenciaga, creative director Alexander Wang showcased the idea of loungewear in the collection utilizing sensual ivories, ruching elements, lace slippers, silk boxer shorts and slip dresses. In the case of Givenchy creative director Riccardo Tisci, his collection was an ode to the gothic interpretation of sleepwear. At the heart of the collection were ivory and black slip dresses and an abundance of camisoles with lace edges paired with silky robe style kimonos and wide-legged pants. To channel this trend in your daily life while obtaining the comfort college students strive for, try incorporating slinky slip dresses, easy camisoles and lace dresses into your wardrobe. These looks will feel just as effortless and relaxed, but will not have people questioning whether or not you just rolled out of bed. A trend that is wearable, cozy and cute will be no problem getting used to.

the gender fluid movement WORDS: Halee Michel STYLE: Alixzandra Jyawook PHOTOS: Jeff Park MODELS: Kaylee and Alison Simons
Fashion is a living, breathing industry that is always in the midst of reinventing itself. With 2016 well underway, the latest stage of metamorphose revolves around challenging and changing the idea of gender. This movement of neutrality views the idea of sex as a spectrum rather than being pigeonholed into option “A” or “B.” Trends and coveted staples are no longer exclusive to a culturally determined demographic as individuals now have the opportunity to place themselves on the spectrum. Gender fluidity in fashion has been gaining ground from Gucci’s transgendered muse, to the likes of Hari Nef and Jaden Smith recently being signed to model womenswear for Louis Vuitton. The shift toward neutrality is also apparent among celebrities. Model and actress Ruby Rose, who is best known for her inmate role in season 3 of Orange is the New Black, has been vocal about the rigidity of gender roles and how they pertain to her own identity of being gender fluid. Born as a woman, she explained in her own words to ELLE that she is somewhere in the middle of the spectrum. She has a lot of characteristics that would normally be present in her male counterparts, but she is not one to shy away from a mini skirt and pumps. As an up-and-coming style icon, Rose is not afraid to define her own style and aesthetic, whether it’s masculine, feminine or a combination of the two. Following the lead of the Aussie born actress, injecting an outfit with a dose of masculinity does not take much time or effort. Whether it be oversized, distressed or a seemingly simple silhouette, the important thing is to feel comfortable and confident with what you put on your body. Clothes should act as an extension of your personality, and this newfound movement of selfexpression in the fashion industry is embracing that fact and showing no signs of slowing down.

Contrary to what used to be, a bracelet is not just an accessory anymore, and headphones are no longer designed to be disguised. Technology is transforming the fashion world with the introduction of many wearable technology trends. Designers’ latest inputs on this new trend reveal that it is not only for the geeky and tech savvy, but also for fashion gurus everywhere who are evolving technology into unique styles.
chic beats
Music and fashion have always had an inspired relationship. This season, fashion and music lovers united to show off their devotion by rocking bold headphones. You don’t have to be a pop princess like Rihanna to decorate your ears with ornate headphones. Brands like Beats By Dre, FRENDS and even Urban Outfitters allow you to find a unique pair that vibe with your style.
slick and fit
Society’s obsession with fitness has influenced the wearable technology trend with the creation of the Fitbit. This sleek and modern bracelet allows you to track your exercise and health habits; while simultaneously taking your ensemble to the next level. This bracelet not only helps you feel good; it helps you look good too.
polished clocks
Say goodbye to those outdated watches that simply tell time and say hello to the watch of the future. Technology has engineered watches into petite computers you can style with your day-to-day looks. Brands like Apple Watch and Samsung Galaxy Gear Smartwatch make a world of electronic functions, such as tracking your daily activity and responding to notifications, all available at the flick of a wrist.

state of being {bowie} “I DON’T KNOW WHERE I’M GOING FROM HERE, BUT I PROMISE IT WON’T BE BORING.” Musician, fashion icon, innovator and legend are just a few of the titles that encapsulate a man who revolutionized the art world. David Bowie was a true artist ahead of his time, creating controversial yet influential pieces not only for the music industry, but for the fashion world as well. He held the reputation of a bold and risky songwriter as his lyrics embodied a sincere and vulnerable quality that any human could respond to. In a time when rock and roll seemed to be taken too seriously, Bowie believed music still had the ability to captivate, and with that came songs that would widen our imaginations and create new perspectives. Accompanying his transgressive lyrics was his repertoire of alter egos. The most notable was Ziggy Stardust, an alien messenger in the guise of a rock star god. Inadvertently a fashion icon, Ziggy proved to be a defining moment for Bowie’s stage personas. Ziggy’s otherworldly image, complete with a red mullet and face paint slashed across his face, articulated the importance of appearances and its transformative capacity. Bowie was the blank canvas begging to be adorned by fashion that would mold him into his colorful characters. It was Bowie who encouraged people to rebel against the mainstream and use fashion as a form of self-expression and reinvention. It is a working principle that drives many of today’s designer powerhouses like Marc Jacobs and Calvin Klein, whose spring/ summer 2016 collections highlight Bowie’s influence in the form of sequined dresses and trench coats. Even Gucci’s emphasis on eclectic prints and Dries Van Noten’s

use of platform footwear speak volumes of Bowie’s contribution to the fashion world. It has been months since David Bowie’s passing, and fashion designers, bloggers and everyone in-between have been paying homage to Bowie’s legendary style. Burberry welcomed moments of retro chic into its autumn/winter 2016 show by adding embellishments of glitter to the models, hinting at Bowie’s everlasting glitz and glamour. In addition, blogger and designer Chiara Ferragni gave a nod to the transcendent musician by donning a sequined blazer and red metallic pants, mimicking Bowie’s embrace of individuality. What was once a Halloween costume meant to be showcased one day out of the year is now making its way into people’s everyday wardrobe. Sartorially speaking, David Bowie’s myriad of personas has inspired virtually everyone in the fashion industry. To help our readers honor Bowie’s eccentricity, we’ve put together some looks that will stand out in a sea of mundanity. Whether it’s a cheetah print jacket paired with red leather trousers or sequined pants topped off with a fur coat and dramatic makeup a la Ziggy, these outfits will impress anyone; even the Star Man himself.
skinny no more
WORDS: Paris Harper | PHOTOS: Brighid Noone | MODELS: Di Wang, McKenna Balian and BEAUTY: Michelle Ghafari and Sakina Abedi In the constantly evolving world of fashion, one thing is inevitable: repetition. Trends are reused and recycled, and then tucked away until they eventually resurface seasons later. However, one trend that seems to have remained “in” for the past decade is the everyday skinny jean. As versatile as the beloved silhouette may be, current denim trends are bound to give skinnies a run for their money. Rebecca Taylor, Michael Kors and BCBG Max Azria all recently showcased denim in the form of patchwork, coats and trouser cuts including high waist and flare without a skinny pant in sight. Lately, frayed jeans have been a driving force in fashion. The unfinished hems provide an edgy, yet feminine aesthetic appropriate for both day and night. Whether you prefer a light or dark wash, frayed denim is not only flattering but can be
endlessly styled. Models Alessandra Ambrosio and Bella Hadid have been spotted in the unconventional trend worn with form fitting off-theshoulder tops and structured blazers. The jeans are also commonly paired with a sporty bomber jacket or even a full length trench. Adding printed booties or flatforms will complete the look. More reworked alternatives to skinnies include flared and high-waisted jeans that play off of the flirty bohème style of the ‘70s. Playing with proportions can add depth to your look mix wide-legged bell bottoms with a silky scoop neck and skinny scarf or pull off the ever so trendy denim-on-denim look with a chambray top, regularly seen on fashion aficionados Olivia Palermo and Alexa Chung. If you are looking for a denim trend that creates an instant outfit, overalls are the perfect spring
staple. Celebrities who have been spotted in the trend include Zendaya and Selena Gomez, who sport the overalls with a loose-fitting striped T-shirt or ribbed crop top styled with a bright colored pointed-toe pump for a hint of femininity. Make the look accessible for class by wearing overalls with an oxford blouse or sheer turtleneck. But also remember that experimenting with denim doesn’t only have to apply to pants. Layer nearly any look with an oversized jean coat or cardigan—a welcome upgrade from the oversaturated jean jacket. By mixing in the element of denim, an outfit is automatically more balanced while still remaining polished.

what are those As humorous as it is, a lot of us can relate to the famous “What Are Those” Vine that is endlessly quoted nowadays. With all of the new shoe styles for men, it’s hard to keep track of why each pair is so trendy in the first place. But with a few lessons, you’ll be a shoe expert in no time.
Chelsea Boots Despite speculation and criticism over their unisex design, Chelsea boots have surpassed the test of time. The silhouette of the boot itself is over 60-years-old, and to this day it dominates the market. Could it be because the shoes were worn by bands such as The Rolling Stones? Or possibly because they appeared in “Star Wars”? Aside from the iconic appearances, Chelsea boots are on the rise in popularity because of their classic and sophisticated look. The boot itself is very versatile. Chelsea boots are made with high-quality suede throughout, and leather or rubber crepe soles. The boot is very fitted, and because of that it has side panels that add flexibility. Chelsea boots have a tapered toe and a heel tab at the top-line. The boot can either be worn formally or casually. This is the perfect boot to enhance your look in every situation, it will certainly turn heads wherever you go. Adidas x Raf Simons Response Trail 2 Belgian fashion mogul Raf Simons also teamed up with Adidas to drop a futuristic, everyday sneaker that implements style, technology, comfort and protection. The shoe debuted in 2014 for $565 retail in two different colors, which are available in-store and online just about anywhere that carries Raf Simons clothing. Upon release, this became a signature shoe for Raf lovers worldwide. The shoe features technology unknown to the footwear industry. The Adiprene sole is an Adidas designed bottom that helps absorb shock in the heel, and helps provide energy rebound in the forefoot, making walking around campus a stroll in the park. The midsole features several different materials, but most importantly the toe and back are both firm and layered with mesh, giving it a lot of sturdiness with equal style. The toe vamp up to the laces is entirely orange mesh, which allows your feet to breathe. Lastly, the black ankle protector is securely bolted, and can either be moved behind the ankle for style or rested right up the front where the shoe ends and your leg begins. With these protectors in your life, nothing will harm your lower leg or your style.
Adidas Yeezy Boost 350 & 750 Kanye West and Adidas teamed up to create the most highdemand shoe of 2015, with every release selling out almost instantaneously. The 350s retail for $200 and the 750s retail for $350. A limited supply and massive demand have caused both shoes to resell for prices well into the thousands. The 350 boost is lightweight and has a constructed upper designed to fit like a “second skin.” Adidas’ boost technology provides a springy, cushiony response for both comfort and performance. Not only do the 350s look good, but they feel good too. The shoes have both flexibility and support in all areas, making them breathable for daily wear. Kanye West didn’t sweat the specifics─on the midsole, there’s a suede patch with “YZY” engraved in it. In addition, the protruding heel tab with red stitching makes the shoe stand out from competitors, proving once again that it’s all about the details. The 750s are high-tops with a full suede upper and boost technology protected by a full rubber outsole. The shoe contains no tongue, which is a unique touch. Similar to the 350s, a mid-foot strap has YZY engraved on the inside of the shoe. The strap itself is elastic while the material used to hold the strap down is a high-quality Velcro. On the lateral side, or the side of the shoe, there is a full length zipper to create a slim fit. Unfortunately, the shoe has no half sizes and runs a half size big for most. Despite this, it is undeniably that Kanye West’s 750 design is a must-have shoe.

Fashion is all about the complements. Whether it be a hat to top off a shirt and jacket combination or a gold watch to complement an all black outfit, accessories separate a set of clothes from a look that’s worth talking about. Just like that piece to complement your outfit, the right haircut is important for polishing your look. But don’t stop there, keep the complements coming with facial hair to fully complete your look. Whether you’re rocking a thick, bushy beard or a well trimmed chin strap, facial hair is the perfect finishing touch. There are as many beard styles as there are hairstyles, and an endless list of combinations between the two. With every beard and hairstyle combination comes its own unique style and personality. A popular look for men is the bushy beard paired with a slicked back, medium length haircut. When paired together, these two styles give off a certain sense of professionalism while still allowing for some personality to shine through. The thick beard is a symbol for masculinity and it shows in this bushy yet slick combination. However, if you decide to go for a full beard keep in mind that there is a major difference between a ‘bushy’ beard and an untrimmed beard. An untrimmed or unkempt beard is very noticeable and can be damaging to future growth. Another dynamic style combination is textured, medium length hair paired with a closely groomed beard. The haircut will create a slightly hipster vibe while your tamed beard will help maintain a traditional feel. When complementing textured hair with a shorter beard, you get a classy yet edgy style that will make you stand out in a positive way. However, the look that has been taking the fashion world by storm, and can be complemented by beards of all lengths is the man bun. Some interesting ways to pull off this look is with an undercut and bushy beard or a neatly trimmed medium length beard. The facial hair will be able to balance out your slick bun. A haircut says a lot about a man, and so does his beard. Be sure to style one that successfully complement the other.

above the knee shorts are back It’s time to stop hiding under long, baggy shorts, especially cargo shorts—please make them stop—and show off those legs you’ve been working hard for in the gym all winter. Brands like Chubbies offer their original 5½ inch shorts in an assortment of colors and patterns that make it easy to stand out and enhance your style game. However, don’t feel like you have to jump right into the shorter look with 5 ½ inch shorts. Stores like J. Crew and Urban Outfitters offer shorts in an array of lengths ranging from 10 inch all the way down to 5 inch cuts. Try out a longer length, gradually testing out shorter styles if you
are not ready to immediately go for the shortest of shorts. Above the knee shorts look good with just about any shirt. Printed shorts work well with solid short sleeved button-ups, while a pair of khaki or navy blue shorts help complement a sweater or comfy T-shirt. When it comes to selecting footwear, make sure your shoes match the style you have chosen. Boat shoes, tennis shoes and canvas sneakers are all great options when it comes to shorter shorts to accent their preppy vibe. In addition to the right shoes, classic accessories like a watch and a pair of sunglasses help tie the whole look together.

PUT YOUR BEST SOCK FORWARD
No look is complete without a great pair of socks. Forget about the basic black, grey and blue socks ─ it’s time to get creative. Basic style rules advise you to match the color of your socks with the color of your trousers, which is a tip to keep in mind for formal occasions such as interviews or business meetings. But in nearly all other occasions, leave room for some fun. In a society where social norms call for fitting a basic mold, it takes a daring individual to proudly display quirky and wild socks in public. Don’t be like everybody else, be the smart guy with the crazy socks. Socks are a unique way of expressing yourself and showing your true personality. There are many different patterns to choose from. Smart guys choose the

boldest and brightest designs such as paisley, argyle, stripes or even cartoon characters. These types of socks help spice up an otherwise very simple look with some vibrant colors. If you’re not quite ready to wear a pair of daring socks with a suit, colored socks that match any piece in your ensemble are an exciting touch that is is certainly memorable. Be the guy that coordinates your socks to your pocket square, tie or even shirt color because it gives your outfit character and allows your personality to shine through. Don’t stress about matching every color perfectly, simply find a pair that complements the shades in your outfit and let your socks do the talking.

College is all about preparing yourself for the professional world that exists beyond the boundaries of campus. Long gone are the days of studying and wearing your sweatpants to class because practice will eventually help make your leap into the business world smoother. The transition from college boy to working man is also about learning how to develop your wardrobe along the way. From weekend retreats to client lunches, keeping a few key pieces in your closet will help you build your professionalism and ensure you look your age in any situation. Here are some essentials that will boost your professional look: A blazer is perfect for a work meeting or a night out. Find a blazer that fits well and matches the other pieces in your wardrobe. A blazer can complete your look and add sophistication to any style. A button down shirt, whether it be plain, patterned, colored or neutral, a button down shirt is a casual way to show you care about your appearance because it is clean cut. Combine a button up with a blazer, or dress it down with a pair of jeans for a classic look that never goes out of style. A belt will not only keep your pants where they belong, but it will also complement your look. Just remember that if you are dress business casual, you should match the metal buckle to your watch and the leather to your shoes. A tailored pair of dark jeans are essential, and the fit and wash gives them versatility. Jeans that fit well will flatter your body, while a dark wash can be sophisticated or casual depending on what you pair them with. Choose jeans that suit your body type and can be worn on multiple occasions. A plain T-shirt or a structured T-shirt in a solid color that you can wear alone or under something like your new blazer will enhance the quality of your wardrobe, and it complement both your casual and business wear pieces.

Suit it up your own way Stop pulling out the same old suit to play it safe and try something new! Colors are a great way to bring your basic suits to life. After all, nothing says bold like a midnight blue tuxedo.
Bleached jeans and an oversized T-shirt are a must These essentials will never go out of style and the best part is that you probably already have them in your closet. Jeans and a tee are a classic combination, but the wash of your jeans and fit of your T-shirt will instantly personalize this comfortable look.
You can never go wrong with a sweatshirt Who said you can’t dress up a sweatshirt? It’s all about proportions. Wear a sweatshirt with tight leather pants and your favorite pair of kicks and you’ll be on your way.
Layers on layers on layers Multiple layers are both fashionable and functional. A long-sleeved T-shirt, a sweater and a jacket make a versatile combination because you can remove layers as needed without losing your style.
Don’t limit your wardrobe to just black Yes, black is easy and slimming but it is also very typical. Add a pop of color every once in awhile and you will stand out from those around you.
Know how to amp up your look Stylish elements of surprise can be a great way to enhance your look. Pairing items such as a neck tie and jeans is not something we see everyday, but the opposing styles unite to completely personalize your look.

Experiment with your own ideas
Forget the runway show trends, because great style is all about dressing for yourself. Try putting your own twist on a look and create a trend that is all your own.
Find what you love and wear it often Everyone has that one shirt they’ve been sporting since high school, but as long as you create variations of the same outfit, the authenticity of your retro pieces will never go out of style.

WHAT’S A WAIST? WORDS: Brittany Battle PHOTOS: Margaux Forster BEAUTY: Hannah Kutchinski MODEL: Aftyn Williams

In the late 1500s, very wealthy French women wore corsets, which they referred to as corps pique. Corsets were known as the ultimate French look and were worn with dresses to obtain a slimmer and more delicate figure. Today, the trendy look of a small waist and wide hips has resurfaced, but it seems to be accomplished in a new way. Reality stars such as the Kardashian sisters, Amber Rose and Dita Von Teese are a few of the many women who have advertised the beneficial results of waist training. In the 16th century, corsets were made of layered fabric, stiffened with glue and lace. This allowed the corset to mold the torso into a cylinder shape and flatten the bust. Corsets were commonly worn as part of the woman’s outfit. Now the purpose of a waist trainer is to slim the waist, creating an hourglass figure. A waist trainer is worn at the gym or underneath clothing throughout the day. Waist trainers are typically made out of latex material, which works to bring in the waist and produce a curvier figure; lifted bust, small waist and wide hips. Generally, waist trainers range from about $40 to $125. There are a few down sides to excessive waist training, some of which may be rumors or extreme occurrences and include: bruising to the skin, dehydration (when worn for multiple hours) and in most severe cases they have been rumored to reposition one’s organ placement. None of these side effects have been clinically proven. They are just reports from some individuals who have tried wearing a waist trainer. While waist trainers have been observed to have some negative impacts, they are a trendy way to achieve the historically beloved appearance of a curvy female figure. Perhaps even the wealthiest French women would have opted for a modern day waist trainer over an original corset. Don’t be afraid give this new trend a shot. Just be sure to train your waist with caution along with a healthy diet.

We are all different shapes and sizes, which is why we have the privilege of going to retail stores and picking out items in small, medium or large sizes. We are also all different skin tones, colors and ethnicities. However, we typically forget to consider exactly how unique each color is. This means we do not always have the ability to go to different stores and pick out the perfect match of foundation or concealer for our individual skin tones. Though this may not seem like a major issue, it happens to many people who visit various drugstores, makeup counters and retail cosmetic stores. Foundation is the base and one of the most important parts of applying makeup. So, it is important to match the tone as close to your complexion as possible. This can be difficult, when brands don’t always offer a broad range

of shades or only offer certain shades according to the geographical area. Another challenge of matching foundation to your skin tone is that some ethnicities are assumed to be all one shade, which means there aren’t enough variations in particular shades of foundations to suit everyone. Even though brands are slowly starting to offer more shades within their foundation lines, many people still struggle to find the perfect match. One solution for this foundation fiasco is to transform into a scientific expert by making your own unique shade of foundation, mixing up a multiple colors to create your own perfect match. If you are unsure of where to begin, try visiting a makeup counter so they can tell you what type of undertones your skin has. This will give
you an idea of what shades you should combine to make your own foundation. Another solution to ditch the drugstore or makeup counter altogether, and start exploring the internet. Since certain drugstores offer shades based on geography, it may be impossible to find your specific shade depending on where you live. The internet has a broad range of options as it does not cater to one area, but rather the whole world. Try finding
a match on your favorite cosmetics site as they may offer a wider range online. Before ordering, remember to double check the return policy. This is to ensure the foundation is returnable in case it does not match as well as you thought it would. These solutions may be a hassle but will be worth it when you finally have the perfect base to accompany that “best” face.

With so many different looks to choose from nowadays, recreating them without owning the exact same products as your favorite beauty bloggers and YouTubers can seem overwhelming. But don’t stress—there is a basic color that allows you to create similar looks without purchasing dozens of fancy products. That’s right, one simple brown is all you need to achieve the desirable look of your favorite fashion icons. Brown has versatility because you can use it lightly for a natural look, or go dramatic by applying it heavily for a dark smokey eye. For a simplified look, try using a brown shadow as a liner. Take a small smudge brush and lightly line
your eye with the shadow, you can even add a small wing for unique flare. The brown appears more natural opposed to a black line while still giving your eyes definition and thickening your lash line. To add a little more definition, take a medium brown shade and blend it into the crease of your eye. This will create a natural contour to your eyes. To keep from losing your lash line, take a dark brown shadow and smoke out the brown liner. The dark brown will appear to look like eyeliner. It will also look softer and make your natural lashes appear fuller and more voluminous. If you want to take your look up a notch, brown eyeshadows make for the perfect smoky eye. Just add
a dark brown eyeshadow all over your lid for a more intense nighttime look. You can pack on as much dark eyeshadow as you want depending on how dark you want the look to be. Take the medium shade of brown used earlier to blend the crease so there isn’t a harsh line. The possibilities are endless with basic brown eyeshadows. In addition to the versatility of basic brown eyeshadows, using these few shades is perfect for traveling. You can create all of your favorite looks without dragging along dozens of eyeshadow palettes and liners or spending your hard earned funds.

Tip #1: Test your shade Test shades of bronzer on the back of your wrist. Avoid picking up a dark brown shade of powder just because it is the tone you would like to be. Make sure to choose a shade that is going to look natural on your skin. Tip #2: Bronzer hacks If you are unsure what bronzer to get, a darker shade in your favorite setting powder will always do. Brush: Kabuki Kabuki brushes are highly recommended as they buff the powder to make it look as natural as possible. However, any dense brush with fluffy bristles will have the same effect. Application: The “three” Apply bronzer in a three-shape motion. The three-shape motion includes: your temples, cheekbones and jawline. These are all features on the face where you naturally tan. Add extra bronzer to the bridge of the nose, eyelids, neck and shoulders to further enhance your complexion.
The Glow
Tip #1: Skin tone Pink and yellow are considered to be cool and warm highlighting tones. Each color is compatible to both cool and warm skin tones. Test each shimmer shade on your wrist in order to determine what highlighter suits you best. Brush: Small round Small rounded brushes make for the perfect glow. Highlighter is specifically applied in precise areas, which means a smaller brush is necessary. You can also gently apply the shimmery shade with your finger if you do not have a small round brush. Application: The highpoints of your face The highpoints of your face are where the sun would naturally highlight. Gently brush the highlight on your cheek and brow bones. Add highlighter on bridge of the nose and upper lip to accentuate your features. In addition, a little shimmer on your collar bones never hurts.
The Peach Cheek
Tip #1: Choosing a blush There are many blushes on the market, and choosing the right one can be difficult. However, it is no secret that warm toned blushes will help you achieve a desirable bronze tone. Brush: Kabuki Kabuki brushes are ideal for dusting lightweight products such as blush due to their fullness, but any fluffy brush will work. Application: Apples of your cheeks When you smile or smirk into the mirror, the part of your cheek that becomes prominent is the apple of your cheek. Apply a light dusting of the blush to the apples in a swirling motion, working your way from the front to the back of your cheek bones.
Golden Rule: Blend
Blending is key to any makeup look. Makeup is your best friend that helps bring out your natural beauty. You do not want any harsh lines or dark patches. Use a light hand with your brush so the products do not come off too harsh. Once you have achieved your look, circle a clean makeup brush over your face and neck. This assures everything is blended to perfection. Apply a setting spray as the final touch to lock in your look. WORDS: Brooke Segal PHOTOS: Kam Derezinski BEAUTY: Brooke Segal MODEL: Emma Prevoznack

Ballet barre workouts have been a huge trend lately, possible because it’s a favorite workout among Victoria’s Secret Angels and reality stars like the Kardashians. Whether it’s the celebrity influence or not, working out with a ballet barre is definitely starting to become the go-to workout for building a strong and toned body. No experience is necessary, just hold on to the barre and let the instructors guide you through a vigorous full body workout. Think you have two left feet? No problem! Class sizes are typically between 12-24 people, and instructors are attentive when it comes to correcting form. The studio hosts all ages with clients anywhere between the ages of 18-72. Luckily, Michigan State students don’t have to travel far to find a barre. At Pure Barre Okemos, classes are meant to target all the key muscle groups: arms, abs, thighs and butt. A unique advantage of the Pure Barre workout opposed to other dance workouts, such as Zumba, is that it uses small isometric movements. These movements are focused and precise, and combined with stretches that help develop long, lean muscles. Motivating music fills the studio as clients push through a 55 minute low impact, high intensity workout. Clients can expect new music and exercise moves in each class to make things interesting and keep them on their toes. Along with being a great place to sweat out all your stress, Pure Barre Okemos is the place to go for fashionable active-wear and accessories. The studio carries premiere brands such as Lululemon, Dogeared and Wild Fox as well as their own exclusive apparel. The environment at Pure Barre Okemos is described best by Dana Owen, owner of Pure Barre Okemos, who says, “it’s warm, it’s welcoming, it’s fun, it’s a community. It’s really a family.”Before becoming the owner, Owen attended one pure barre class and was immediately hooked. out with the nudes
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Although the classic combination of a simple nude lipstick and subtle eye makeup will never get old, it is nice to occasionally spice up your look. Spring is a symbol of new beginnings, so why not hop into the fresh season with a face full of color? Bright colors are perfect when you are feeling lively or when you just want to have a little fun. However, bold shades must be applied carefully because if not done correctly, your look could quickly go from adventurously alluring to a dramatic disaster. The first thing you need to decide is where you would like to apply your pop of color. Using a bright lipstick gives your lips an exciting pop, and a vibrant eyeshadow can create a chic cut crease or an intense smoky-eye. Next, choose a color that is flattering to your complexion. Naturally, warmer shades such as burnt orange, golden yellow and soft red look better on deep toned skin. Then there are cooler colors like green, blue and purple which are great complements for pale skin tones. If you decide to focus on your eyes, the trick to perfecting eyeshadow is to blend. Blending helps create an effortless look without making the bright color look too harsh. If you want the color to look a bit more prominent, add a concealer
base to your lids. It will build a matte surface and act as a primer, which makes the eyeshadow stand out. When it comes to precious pouts, it’s important to make sure your lips are prepped and ready for your lipstick or lipgloss. You may want to use a sugar scrub for exfoliating your lips, and then apply hydrating lip balm to make sure your lips are moisturized. Once you have prepped your lips, it is important to use a lip liner. Bright colors tend to bleed and smudge, resulting in an unclean and undefined look. When you use a liner, the color will stay exactly where you apply it. After lining your lips, apply the color of your choice to complete your look and bring your lips to life. There is one very important rule when wearing a bright color on your lips or eyes: you must be confident! The color on your face is audacious and fearless, so you must be as well. Know that you look as beautiful as the bright color you’re wearing and simply own it. It’s all about voluptuous curls. Our favorite ‘it’ girls like Kylie Jenner, Justine Skye, Gigi Hadid and many more have been spotted flaunting perfect curls on and off the red carpet. But realistically, achieving the perfect curl and keeping it is hard work, and even harder on your hair. Flat irons, curling irons and blow dryers all play a role in damaging your hair if used excessively. With warm weather approaching, there are many different methods to achieve the perfect curl without using heat. All of these methods are completed with household items and can be used on all hair textures and lengths. Follow these steps leave your hair looking voluptuous and feeling healthy without the damaging heat factor.
method one for traditional curls
you’ll need: hair spray, water and bobby pins 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.
Separate your hair into small sections Lightly spritz your hair with water and wrap it around your finger Slide your finger out and pin it to your head Continue with each section until your entire head is rolled Spray your hair thoroughly with hairspray Wait 30 minutes to an hour for hair to dry Unroll the curls, and enjoy your flawless, heat free curls!
method two for soft body wave curls
you’ll need: empty soda cans, water, bobby pins, hair mousse and hairspray 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
Wet your hair and tousle it with a small amount of your favorite hair mousse Spritz a small section of the bottom of your hair with hairspray Roll it up on the can and secure the hair around the can with a bobby pin Slide the can out from your hair and repeat until you have rolled all your hair Gently spritz the hair again with hairspray, smoothing all flyaways When your hair is completely dry, remove the pins and run your fingers through your curls to achieve luxurious body waves!
method three for tight, babydoll curls
you’ll need: flexi-rods, water, mousse or leave in conditioner and hairspray

Within each section, take small pieces of hair and smooth mousse or leave-in conditioner over your hair 3. Start from the root and wrap the hair in a spiral pattern down the flex-rod 4. Secure the roller by folding each end of the flexi-rod 5. Continue until your entire head is rolled 6. Spritz your hair with water and wait for it to dry completely 7. Unroll flexi-rods and separate curls with your fingers to get the desired fullness
WORDS: Madison Marzonie PHOTOS: Sheryl Levitt BEAUTY: Hannah Kutchinski MODEL: Gabriella Garza It is hard not to scroll through Instagram without seeing a picture of your favorite blogger or celebrity posing with their detox tea in one hand and a selfie stick in the other. This trend has many people questioning the true advantages and disadvantages that come with a detox tea program. Most people believe that these teas contain a magical blend of leaves and various other ingredients that allow you to lose weight quickly and easily. However, there are many factors people should consider before attempting a “tea-tox.” The most common
sippin’ my tea

misconception is that you can live a sedentary lifestyle while eating whatever you want, and the tea alone can give you the body of a Victoria’s Secret Angel. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Detox teas are only an effective aid in weight loss if they are used alongside a healthy diet and a regular exercise routine. Another myth about detox tea is that weight from fat gets shed, but typically every pound lost is from water weight. In most cases, almost immediately after your detox ends, the few pounds lost will come right back. Even though there aren’t many long-term results, a detox tea is a short-term way to effectively flatten your belly. Detox teas can also cost an arm and a leg for results that could only last for a few days. However, if you would still like to give it a shot, there are other ways to obtain nearly identical results. For example, some tea companies that sell their products at grocery stores make their own detox teas for about one tenth of the price. Also, there are many recipes on websites like Pinterest for making your own detox teas and drinks. Homemade detox tea recipes are often very simple to follow and always very affordable to make. Finally, the question everyone is anxious to know: are detox teas truly worth trying? That decision is completely up to you. Before making the decision, ask yourself what kind of results you are looking for. If you’re in search of a long-term way to develop a healthier lifestyle, then your diet and exercise routine should be your main focus. Nonetheless, if you are looking for a shortterm fix to rock your bikini for an impromptu beach getaway, then detox tea is worth a try.

With the results of the the 2015 holiday shopping season behind us, there is an undeniable truth─spending habits are changing. By digging deeper, it is easier to see that these spending habits are not seasonal issues; instead, they are generational behaviors. There is a gradual shift in spending habits among younger generations. Those born before 1984, also known as Generation X, prefer to spend their paychecks on in-store experiences over digital retail. On the other hand, Generation Y, people born after 1985, tend to navigate toward technology purchases over in-store experiences. This shift poses the question: what are the implications in the fashion world? As with any art form, fashion will have to adapt to the times in order to reach an evolving audience that is more interested in technology than experiences.
While some say that the business plans of fashion companies will continue to largely shift focus from brick and mortar methods to online, ‘direct-to-customer’ models, this doesn’t do much to combat Gen X’s ‘experience’ craving. Events such as Kanye West’s ‘Life of Pablo’ release party, where West debuted his new album as models wearing his latest clothing line infiltrated the affair, grabbed audience attention and satisfied the need for experience while still promoting sales for both the album and the line. Fashion shows, which used to be packed with retail buyers and photographers focusing on the season’s trends, are now crowded with ordinary consumers who want to see the it-girls they know from Instagram strutting down the catwalk. The dynamic has changed, and fashion is being forced to keep up. Fashion in technology is expected to take leaps forward in the near future. Messenger services such as ‘WhatsApp’ have started teaming up with retailers to become more of a megaplatform for any and every need, rather than just a way for Gen Y to chat with friends. As retailers become involved with these apps, retail customer service agents
are able to ‘chat’ with customers in a way that is similar to texting a friend, increasing the personal and technological feeling of the shopping experience. Brands such as Stitch Fix and Trunk Club now acquire information about your personality and your preferences online in order to gauge your style, and then a new, perfectly curated outfit ends up on your doorstep. The catch to sites like these is they usually require you to sign up for a subscription, meaning you get a new outfit sent to you every so often. For those who have difficulty remembering to pay their credit card off, let alone cancel subscriptions, these sites can gradually put a hole in your wallet by simply receiving your information one time. Both technological and experiential aspects are integrated into the fashion world, changing the way retailers are connecting to their consumers. Fashion is a dynamic art form that must find new ways to capture the attention of the latest generations while still maintaining its connection to the previous generations. Despite all the changes, one thing is for sure: fashion will never die. It will simply need to adapt to keep up with the times.

#goals we envy WORDS: Mia Gallucci PHOTO: Natalie Zunker “Ugh, I can’t think of a good caption!” “Is it too late to post?” “Like my post! I need more likes!” Do those questions sound familiar? To millennials who spends a considerable amount of time on social media, those questions have become daily dilemmas. But why are we so concerned about how others perceive us on social media? For many people, the answer is as simple as selfrepresentation. Essena O’Neill was a 18-year old Australian girl who seemingly transformed into an Instagram celebrity overnight, acquiring nearly half a million followers. However in November 2015, Essena decided to quit social media without any warning. Prior to deactivating her social media accounts, Essena rewrote the captions on several of her Instagram photos, detailing the painful reality she endured while creating her daily posts. In a video Essena made shortly after her leave, she said that her entire self-worth was attached to her social media posts. This is a common issue for millennials. Social media impacts our self-gratification, which often relies solely on how many likes we get or how well documented the exciting moments in our lives are these days. Not to mention, we have a tendency to get caught up in the lives of others. From your best friend’s attractive cousin to your roommate’s 13-going-on-30 sister, you could spend forever aimlessly scrolling through the profiles of people you have never even met before. “Ugh, their life is perfect. Why can’t I be them?!” The act of social media stalking brings us to the popular #goals trend on social media. A picture of six gorgeous, perfectly dressed friends hanging out at the
062
most popular place in town is considered #squadgoals, and a woman gracefully leading her significant other through a romantic location under a sky of fireworks is labeled #relationshipgoals. Posts we see from our favorite celebrities and influencers may be aspirational, but that doesn’t mean our lives have to be portrayed the same way. If we keep trying to achieve the “#goals” that others have attained, we end up discrediting our own worth. We must stop envying the lives of others and begin loving our own lives wholeheartedly again. Aside from obsessing over the lives of other, it is important to remember that we all determine how we are perceived on our social media accounts. Most people only post the happy, exciting moments of their lives; they aren’t necessarily going to post every depressing detail of the fight they had with their best friend, bad grade they received on their last exam or recent breakup they went through. So, next time you find yourself caught up with envy in the life of someone else on social media, remember that person is human too and their life isn’t perfect. We have the ability to choose what others see on social media and know about our personal lives. In this sense, it is pointless to constantly fawn over the lives of others because there are many great moments waiting to be had in our own lives. Finally, always remember to post pictures because you like them, not because you think they will get you the most likes or because they will help you uphold your “image.” At its core, social media is an outlet to express yourself, and posting about what you truly enjoy will be the most attractive photo out there. If you like it, post it. Social media is supposed to be fun– don’t worry about the attention. Let’s stop #goals. Let’s be ourselves.

Identical twins Abby and Gabby Burbary share more than just your average siblings. Since they were 16, the twins have co-owned an online clothing boutique called Bella Gemelli, which is Italian for “beautiful twins.” However, the meaning behind the boutique’s name goes deeper than surface level. “To us, the definition of beautiful is not the physical appearance, but the soul, confidence and brilliance inside that completes an individual,” Abby noted. The twins have taken the importance of their sisterhood to the next level by donating 5% of their net proceeds to Graham’s Foundation, who supports premature births. “Ever since we were little, we wanted to start our own company just like our parents did. When we became older, we knew that the way to be successful was to turn passion into daily experiences, which is why we started Bella Gemelli,” said Gabby. The twins conduct extensive research to find both small and large brands across the world
to include in their boutique. While the boutique is currently online only, Abby and Gabby are in the process of transitioning Bella Gemelli into an exclusive retail brand, complete with clothing designed all themselves. In addition, as if running their own business wasn’t enough, Abby and Gabby are MSU sophomores studying journalism while balancing a variety of extracurricular activities. When asked about how they manage it all, they credit their success to having a huge Spartan network of people to connect with as well as each other to stay motivated. Abby and Gabby also credit VIM Magazine as a huge support system that keeps them inspired for the future. “When we joined VIM last semester, we were enthralled by all the members who all have their own goals and dreams, and are driven to complete them. The determination and dedication is so inspiring to us! VIM is extremely supportive of everyone’s dreams, and that is wonderful. We also love the fact that we get to talk
to successful people and learn about how their successes came about,” the twins explained. When asked what their advice would be to fellow Spartans interested in entrepreneurship, Abby and Gabby said, “Our advice is that without taking the risk, there is no reward. If you really believe in something, keep persevering to reach your dream. It may not always be what you want it to be on the first try, but don’t give up! Failure is a huge part of success.” Be sure to follow Bella Gemelli for all the exciting changes coming up this year. Also, check out their online boutique at www.bellagemelli.com.

the inevitable shift WORDS: Lauren Oldenburg PHOTOS: Bridghid Noone
The sound of your alarm clock going off at 7:00am makes you suddenly think to yourself, “how did I get here?” Whatever happened to the days of a light and sweet knock on your bedroom door by your mother coming to slowly coax you out of your slumber to get ready for school? Life tends to happen so quickly that sometimes we do not even see our ourselves changing in the process. If you have experienced the overwhelming anxiety of your first job interview or have taken that first sip of coffee in the morning before the bright sun and singing birds have risen, then welcome to adulthood. You are now in the process where you find will yourself changing from a fun-loving, young teen to a driven and ambitious, completely stressed-out young adult. Here are the warning signs that you are inching closer toward that everlasting rabbit hole of adult life.
The idea of staying in for a movie night with your roommates starts to sound way more appealing than a crazy night out bar-hopping
When a Friends marathon accompanied by a hot cup of tea is your idea of the perfect Friday night, then you have started moving into adulthood. You are staring at the face of your teen self, seemingly waving goodbye.
Your coffee machine and scented candles have day-to-day uses in your house
If you lazily wake up in the morning and the second thing you touch is your coffee machine, then the signs are present. If the idea of lighting a scented candle makes your heart jump a little, then adulthood is undeniably within range.
You are able to navigate a grocery store with little-to-no panic attacks Strolling up and down the aisles, knowing exactly what you need for the week and where it’s at is quite an accomplishment. Your adulthood skill have begun to bloom.
You spend more time on the internet submitting homework and figuring out future plans than scrolling through BuzzFeed and filling up a virtual cart of things you don’t even intend to purchase
Although there is always the occasional lazy day that consists of watching Netflix for a few hours while pinning organic recipes on Pinterest, for the most part you are productive online. If you’re checking out company websites, reading articles or searching an update on a rarely used LinkedIn page, then your adult self is showing. These are only a few actions related to your ultimate succession into adulthood. But if any of these things apply to you, even in the slightest bit, then start getting comfortable with the fact that real life is right around the corner. Although it is hard for us to let go of our younger selves and the days we felt free of obligations, becoming responsible, mature and driven toward your goals is something to feel good about. This is not to say that you shouldn’t be able to let your hair down once in awhile though. Take time to enjoy yourself in between those long overtime shifts and let loose, because you will never be too old to have a good time.

We all follow certain Instagram accounts just to see the luxurious things we can’t have. Whether it’s Ryan Gosling posting a picture of himself on a private jet, a one-of-akind couture gown on a red carpet or the most delicious ice cream cookie sandwich New York money can buy, it always seems out of reach. While a picture perfect moment with Ryan Gosling showing up on your doorstep to whisk you away to the Oscars is less likely, VIM can promise you Instagram-worthy donuts, pastries and sandwiches that you don’t have to drive more than 15 minutes to find. Glazed and Confused is an urban bakery located on Washington Square in Lansing. Pete Counseller is the owner as well as a fellow Spartan alumni. He started this bakery after 21 years of being a firefighter and paramedic with the City of East Lansing Fire Department. After an injury on the job, Counseller wanted to find something else he loved and had a passion for. “I was thinking I loved cooking. I always baked and cooked at the fire department [and] I wanted to do something that was fun. My job was fun in East Lansing; I loved what I
did. I was fortunate to find something that I absolutely loved like that,” Counseller explained. This idea became a reality when Counsellor opened up the unique, homey bakery in August 2015. It has a welcoming atmosphere that is inviting to everyone. Rustic decor and the smell of freshly baked goods will bring out the flavors of treats such as the maple bacon donut, chocolate chip scones or crocodile croissant. “Almost every day we have leftovers, and I take them to the city rescue. I drop off donuts probably three times a week at least,” Counseller said. “Last time I saw the director and he said of everything we get donated, this is the one thing they look forward to. That was probably the most touching part of dropping off our leftovers.” Glazed and Confused is a bakery with a heart of gold. The staff at Glazed and Confused is close-knit and enjoys continuing relationships with clientele. The bakery is one of many successful small businesses in the Greater Lansing Area. And with it’s ever changing flavors and decadent treats, it’s a nice change from another Starbucks trip. Lastly, don’t worry─the donuts are well worth the extra time at the gym.

At the second annual VIM Fashion Gala in November 2015, Michael Lemus was celebrated for his winning fashion show design. Lemus, a senior at MSU majoring in apparel & textile design, has appeared in over six fashion shows including a show at The Cleveland Museum of Art, two ATD Fashion Shows here at MSU, two exhibitions at Kresge Art Center and a show at the Eli & Edythe Broad Art Museum. Read on to find out all the haute details VIM found out during an interview with the talented artist. What was the inspiration for your pieces at the VIM Fashion Gala? ML: “I was listening to a Panic at the Disco Song, “She had the World.” Their second album was pretty odd, pretty ethereal. In the song, she had the world. It carries on this very serene rhythm, and the lyrics are so otherworldly. So, I wanted to create a garment that encapsulated that. So I used chiffons and this silver embroidered pattern. I wanted to create this eerie kind of thing.” How long did it take you to make the garment? ML: “I had already made it in a previous class. I made it junior year in a draping class. It was my first time learning how to drape, and I loved it. It was a lot of fun and that’s why it had the big, poofy sleeves and the cowl neckline…I didn’t think I was ever going to put it in a competition

or a fashion show; I just wanted to make something really, really pretty in class.” How did you learn about the VIM Fashion Gala, and what made you want to enter the competition? ML: “All of my friends were like ‘I’m submitting my design for the gala,’ and I didn’t think I had anything to submit. But then I remembered last minute that I had a piece from last year, so I was like ‘Why not? It’ll be fun!’ Besides, doing shows is one of my favorite things about fashion design.” What makes fashion shows your favorite part about fashion design? ML: “I think I love putting everything together, like styling, hair, makeup, finding and casting the right models. I like to create the perfect image.” What goes into the details of creating a full runway look? ML: “I just follow a lot of makeup blogs on Tumblr and Pinterest. Also, I’ll look at designers and show stuff too, especially looking at the little details. I will pick and pull apart
certain pieces, like ‘I like the hair in the Givenchy show or the eyes that they did for a specific Vivienne Westwood model. It’s like piecing together those things and creating a mood board of hair, makeup, and shoes- the overall mood of the garment.” What are your plans for the future? ML: “I’m interning at Michael Kors and I will be living in New York this summer. Eventually, I want to go into couture or haute couture. I would love to be a creative director for an established house. I also really want to move out of the country. I was thinking Barcelona. I want to be somewhere in either South America or Spain, and integrate myself in the country.” So, who is your favorite designer? ML: “Right now, I would say Josep Font and Delpozo. I love the shapes. The silhouettes are just incredible. It’s ready-to-wear, but it’s couture. So, a lot of couture techniques are used like beading and embroidery, but made a little more accessible.”
