Two years ago, we walked into Bessey Hall for our first VIM meeting, complete strangers working together on the Women’s Fashion team under an amazing director. She made our team feel like a family, and that sense of community is something we have carried with us ever since. If you would have told us then that in our senior year at
Michigan State University we would be the Editors-In-Chief of VIM Magazine, we definitely wouldn’t have believed you. At that time, we had a lot of growing to do and a lot of things we still needed to experience, and VIM created the perfect environment for us to do so. Now, two short years and five issues later, we have the incredible opportunity to create not only a publication, but to also build a community that reflects the many voices, faces, and personalities that are VIM Magazine. We are a community of artists, innovators, and visionaries. We are made up of individuals from every edge of campus. We are every major, every college, every interest. This is what makes VIM so refreshing to read semester after semester, and it’s our differences as individuals that set us apart from the rest. Every individual, from our directors to our team members to our general staffers, has worked tirelessly and passionately to create a publication that embodies the values that are at the center of our organization; excellence, diversity, and community. Our publication and organization thrive because we are made up of a diverse community that only settles for excellence. We are a team that learns from our mistakes and grows from them. Our Fall 2016 issue is a reflection of our community and of our vision, and it’s beyond what we could ever imagine.

PATCHES ON CLOTHING HAVE BECOME A TREND JUST AS ADDICTIVE FOR PROVIDING A RETRO, SANDY-FROM-GREASE VIBE THAT THE COOL KIDS JUST CAN’T SHAKE.
Admittedly, the fashion industry is a die-hard fan of understated, everyday pieces. Whether it’s a pair of fitted jeans, a denim jacket or a simple Oxford shirt, the hottest trend of each season seems to be one that challenges the classics. This fall,
embroidery and patches on clothing give these standard pieces a dramatic flair. Following the modern revitalization of the trend by brands on the runway such as Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci and Valentino, embroidery has become a necessity for “it girls” and street
style stars everywhere. The stark contrast between the romanticism and baroque feel of floral embroidery with the edgy feel of a denim or bomber jacket is why this trend completes a look, for any given occasion. The most popular way embroidery
is being incorporated into day-to-day wardrobe is through denim, leather and statement accessories such as loafers or structured tote bags. Commonly channeled through inspiration drawn from the bohemian ‘70s, the trend is now developed with sophistication and modernity. Though embroidery has the versatility to take an outfit from day to night, patches on clothing have become a trend just as addictive for providing a retro, Sandy-from-Grease vibe that the cool kids just can’t shake. The addictive factor of patches is most likely related to the practical element of embellishments on simple pieces. Whether you’re sporting an emoji, a millennial favored catchphrase or a “Kanye West 2020” patch, this fad provides the opportunity to mix fashion—a serious and sometimes intimidating concept—with the playfulness of pop culture. An essential t-shirt or pair of jeans exists with a twist, adding more style to the classic pieces that can sometimes dull an outfit down. Embarking on the journey of patches and embroidery can be done easily and affordably, as the market for these trends have landed in collegefriendly retailers such as H&M and Urban Outfitters. College fashion embodies the essence of versatility. We’re always on the move. In our reality, there is rarely enough time in the day to brush our hair, let alone piece together the perfect outfit for every occasion. The best solution to the busy-girl-style-blues is using a staple piece as the base item for every outfit and alternating what it’s paired with to evolve your look from day to night. Try using mesh leggings as a base; not only are they on trend this season, they’re also the perfect piece for our college comfort ideals.

Your own personal image can be created with the many brands available to choose from. Celebrities like Gigi and Bella Hadid and Kendall and Kylie Jenner have also been showing off this look during their time off-duty. Names like Adidas, Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger are making huge comebacks this season and we couldn’t be more excited. One way to go all in on the logo look is with a pair of boyfriend jeans and a
flash of Calvin Klein underwear peeking out at the waist. To top it off, a Calvin Klein hat will take your look to the next level. Adidas joggers are comfortable, chic, and can be worn with anything. To create a look of athleisure, pair your joggers with a cropped Adidas sweatshirt or a Tommy Hilfiger tee. Add a pair of brand name sneakers to further accessorize the look. OVER THE KNEE BOOTS From leather to snakeskin, over-the-knee boots have become all the rage with women, teens and celebrities. High-heeled over-the-knee boots are the perfect statement makers, and look amazing with t-shirt dresses and can add the right amount of flair to a blouse and jeans.
CYLINDER SHAFT BOOTS Coming up to about mid-calf, these booties come in a variety of colors and display many different heel designs. They enhance the style of your little black dress, so go ahead and rock these at your next black and white party!
YEEZY BOOTS If you follow Kanye West or the Kardashian clan, you’ve most likely seen these boots sweeping their social media pages. They bear a resemblance to cylinder shaft boots but have a skinnier heel perfect for nighttime wear. Young women everywhere are recreating Yeezy boots using spare socks and their best stilettos for a more affordable version. For the real deal, Yeezy boots run around $245.
CLEAR BOOTS This fall boot trend is like a Cinderella slipper that has come to life. While a less conventional style, clear boots are garnering a lot of attention because of their transparency. In addition, they’re versatile and can be paired with almost anything. This style of boot can be found in the Yeezy collection, as well as in Sears or on ASOS.com for about $55-$65. Give them a try if you’re feeling a bit more daring.
CHELSEA BOOTS This style is an ankle boot upgrade. Chelsea boots are likely the most comfortable of all the styles discussed. Plus, they’re made for men and women, and can be found in materials like leather, velvet and suede. With the comeback that velvet has been making this year, pairing this style of chelsea boot with a black skinny jean can really make a pair of pants pop!

Flannel shirt Two large buckets Bleach Vinegar Clothing hanger Rubber gloves Magazine, newspaper or piece of cardboard Fabric paint Paintbrush DIRECTIONS: STEP 1: Find an old
flannel or purchase one from a local resale store or thrift shop. STEP 2: Fill one bucket
with a 2-to-1 solution of water to bleach, then fill a second bucket with a 2-to-1 solution of water to vinegar. Put your flannel on a clothing hanger and dip it into the bleach solution. Keep it in the STEP 3:

solution for about four minutes. For an ombre effect, gradually pull your flannel up out of the solution every two minutes. Note that different fabrics and patterns react differently to the bleach, so the amount of time a shirt needs to stay in the bleach will vary. STEP 4: Once you are
happy with how bleached it is, put on some rubber gloves and take the shirt out of the bleach solution. Squeeze out the extra solution.
STEP 5: Place your
bleached shirt into the vinegar solution and let it soak. This will help stop the bleaching process. STEP 6: Wash and dry your
shirt on its own or with other bleached flannels. If it still smells like bleach after the first wash, feel free to rewash it. When dry, lay the flannel on a flat surface. We recommend placing a magazine, newspaper or piece of cardboard under the area you would like to paint. STEP 7:
STEP 8: Find a lyric or
phrase to write on the back of the shirt. Using fabric paint, paint the lyric or saying in light layers. Use the lines on the flannel to help you write straight. Readjust the magazine, newspaper or cardboard piece as you go. STEP 9:
STEP 10: Once the first
layer of paint of the lyric or phrase is finished, apply another layer to increase opacity. Remember, your letters should by no means be perfect.

A lot of things about Top Gun are great: there’s the action and there’s Tom Cruise, but one overlooked aspect of this film is the wardrobe. Aviation and military-style clothing similar to what Cruise sports as Maverick in the film is still trending today. Grab a simple military-style or bomber jacket, and iron on some patches to customize the piece. Toss on some dark jeans, boots and, of course, aviator sunglasses. You’ll be sure to receive requests for a one way ticket to your wardrobe!
Dress for the upcoming winter with layering inspired by Judd Nelson’s character, Bender, from The Breakfast Club. Start with a white t-shirt and follow with an oversized flannel, then a jean jacket. Wrap those layers up in a long trench coat to create the effortless, layered look. Be even more inspired by Bender’s look by adding a pair of ripped jeans and boots. Don’t you forget about the attitude that comes along with this style, too!

Pair the t-shirt with fitted denim jeans and top the look off with a pair of Converse or Vans. from the superstar, Justin Bieber, hair gel is everywhere. It has given its users the freedom to shape their hair into whatever they desire and helps one’s hair become a part of his identity. One student we interviewed understands the power of hair gel, saying, “I use gel everyday as a way to make sure I look presentable and puttogether. It’s one of the few things that I feel like I absolutely need in the morning and it gives me a feeling of individuality.”
This student is like most people as he feels incomplete without the addition of hair gel. He enjoys the quickness of it, stating, “it takes me maybe thirty seconds in the morning, and I just put it on four fingers and comb my hair back.” Hair gel presents an easy way to stand out or to maintain a classic look that has been a staple for ages. For a great way to have your hair appear the way you want, look no further than timeless hair gel.

W What we once knew as just an Instagram hashtag has now transcended social media and become a cultural movement that could not have come at a better time. With a rising awareness surrounding social issues, one thought that has plagued many women is the definition of beauty. Combine that with the ever-looming presence of social media and you have a recipe for a perpetually confused female demographic. Since the dawn of social media, beauty trends have been put on blast, from clown contouring to baking to Kylie Jenner’s overdrawn, er, filler-injected lips. In the midst of all this viral chaos, celebrities such as Alicia Keys have taken a stance and vowed to go makeup-free. Even the known beauty enthusiast, Kim Kardashian, flirted with the no makeup trend by attending a show during Paris Fashion Week sans a speck of product on her face. Earlier in the year, Keys penned an essay detailing the rather strenuous and extensive standards women are held to and thus, the “No Makeup Movement” was born. Think of it as a crusade of sorts— fighting against those who equate beauty with a total lack of imperfections. Now, don’t mistake this as an
“anti-makeup” campaign. We at VIM are known to appreciate a bold lip or a fierce cat eye. Instead, use this as an opportunity to reflect on why we wear makeup and challenge the concept of beauty. Are we slathering on layers of product to appease the demands of gender norms? If so, put down that BeautyBlender and step away from the cream contour. If not, you do you and carry on with the immaculate eye shadow blending. The point of this is to remind our readers to do whatever pleases them. It’s your face, your body and your decision. Now, we know going completely make up free is a little daunting. To help ease the anxiety, we’ve teamed up with Glossier to bring you a no makeup-makeup look that will satisfy your inner “Girl on Fire.” Start with a clean, moisturized face and blend in a sheer foundation such as Glossier’s Skin Tint. This product will revive tired looking skin and provide a youthful glow that will even make Sleeping Beauty green with envy. Next up, groom your brows with the award winning Boy Brow from Glossier. To top off the look, apply the Balm Dotcom to your lips and the top of your cheekbones for an enhanced rosy pout and an added dewy touch. VIM Magazine

on your favorite foundation, conceal those under-eye bags and then let those freckles bloom. These beauty marks are also a great way to mask any cover up “cakiness” or facial imperfections, so place them wherever you desire. To achieve the most natural look, dot the freckles across the top of your cheekbones and the middle of your nose. Whether you use a brow pencil, eyeliner or gel liner, be sure to create different sized freckles and place them randomly across your cheekbones and nose. Opt for a long-wear or waterproof product to
ensure your look stays fresh throughout the day. But whatever you choose, don’t use liquid eyeliner as it smudges easily and won’t give you the natural look you’re going for. If you find your freckles are too dramatic, pat some blush or cream concealer on top of them. If you’re all for the dramatic look, sweep some NARS “Orgasm” on before freckling those cheeks. Dab over your finished look with a beauty blender, cotton ball or your fingers with setting powder to make sure your cute and speckled face doesn’t go anywhere.

PARTNERED SQUAT IN-N-OUTS (25 REPS)
Face your partner and grab each other’s hands. Begin doing jump squats in and out while moving your partner’s arms in a mountain climber or bicycle motion. Begin the squat by standing tall and then jumping out to a wide squat; your partner will do the same. For the duration of the exercise, you will be moving your arms with your partner. This is a faster exercise and is sure to get your heart pumping.
2
BEAUTY & HEALTH PARTNER PLANK IN-ANDOUTS (20 REPS)
You and your partner will both be in a plank position opposite of each other with your feet being closest together. Next, perform jumping in-and-out planks by jumping your legs and feet out into a wide stance and then jumping your legs and feet back together. Make sure that your arms never change position. When your partner’s legs jump out, you should be in the alternate position.
3
PARTNER HIP BRIDGE BICYCLES (30 REPS)
You and your partner will lay on your backs, lying across from each other. Raise your legs and match the bottoms of your feet up. Then begin a bicycle exercise of moving your legs in a pedaling motion, coordinating with your partner. To add a challenge to this workout, raise your rear-ends into the air with your hips as high as you can hold them. Adding the hip bridge hold targets your glutes and lower abdomen.
4
PARTNER HIP BRIDGES (25 REPS)
Lay on your back opposite of your partner in a normal hip bridge position. Make sure your toes are touching your partner’s. Then perform 25 repetitions moving your hips up and down simultaneously with your partner with your feet staying in the same position. Put your arms in a “T” position to create stability and equal balance.

Essential oils 101
Improve your mind, body, and soul with the oils you should own. W O R D S : H A N E E N M U S TA FA PHOTO: ISA BEL INC H AUSTEGUI ST YLE: JULIA LE
Essential oils are essentially (see what we did there?) highly concentrated plant extracts that have the amazing ability to benefit your body from the inside out if used properly. Before diving into the world of essential oils, let’s get informed on some of the basics. Uses of essential oils vary from personal beauty to household cleaning products to natural medicinal remedies. Essential oils are often antimicrobial, antiinflammatory and full of antioxidants. These oils have become more popular due to their all-natural chemistry and because they’re free of side effects. Here’s some information on a few of the many essential oils that exist and how incorporating them into your lifestyle can create a healthier you.
PEPPERMINT
TEA TREE
EUCALYPTUS
LAVENDER
Need to clear your head? Peppermint oil works to purify and stimulate the mind and can also increase mental alertness. This is one of the few oils that can be taken internally, which is convenient as it is a great addition to any recipe to help with indigestion. Mix a few drops in your water, coffee or tea and sip away. Peppermint can also freshen morning breath and relieve sore muscles when used topically.
Got blemishes? Whether you’re dealing with the occasional break-out or a long term battle with acne, tea tree oil goes in for the kill. Apply the oil with a cotton ball to any problem areas and leave it on overnight to wake up to a clear complexion in the morning.
Sick? Eucalyptus has got your respiratory system’s back. If you’re ever experiencing a cold, runny nose, sore throat, congestion or bronchitis, then try this quick fix: put a few drops of eucalyptus in your hands, rub them together, inhale and feel instant relief. Not only is eucalyptus helpful for respiratory infections, it can also be used as an alternative to store-bought deodorants.
Stressed? If you’re a college student, then probably. Lavender has the ability to eliminate tension, relieve pain, reduce stress and enhance blood circulation. This oil also works wonders to disinfect your scalp and skin. If you’re feeling the need to treat yo’ self, try taking a warm bath with a few drops of lavender oil.

and imagine the sweet smell of air when the days begin to roll towards spring. Picture the crisp chill of the day when fall creeps up on the last days of summer. Think about those moments in which we experience the true beauty of nature. CLOSE YOUR EYES
Today, these gifts are being threatened and just like any small child on Christmas, we need to protect our presents from being stolen by the Grinch. In our case, the Grinch is climate change. A group of motivated activists pledged to protect the gifts of nature. This group is The Climate Reality Project, a national non-profit organization founded by former vice president Al Gore. The organization has made its mark across our country through their
efforts to promote environmental sustainability. A group of students at Michigan State started their own MSU Campus Corps of the Climate Reality Project. As the phrase, “go green,” is so often heard across campus, it is fitting that these activists are motivating East Lansing to literally go green. According to the group’s leader and organizer, Laura De Palma, the mission of The Climate Reality
Project Campus Corps is to educate campus communities about climate change and win concrete policy results to solve climate change. De Palma continued to explain that the specific goal for this semester is to continue MSU’s legacy as a national leader on the prevention of climate change by convincing President Lou Anna K. Simon to commit to switching to 100 percent renewable electricity by the year 2030. Throughout the
semester, the student activists have taken over the streets to gain student support and acquire signatures for a petition on the matter at hand. Within the last few months, The Climate Reality Project acquired over 7,000 signatures from individuals who support the renewable electricity switch. The number of the group’s supporters keeps growing every day. With over 60 volunteers helping the MSU Campus Corps, their goal is surely within reach. We’ve caused our planet major suffering. It is time to change the way we live. Between the devastation already caused by air pollution, deforestation and rising sea levels, we must find the motivation in ourselves to make these environmentally positive changes today. At a meeting with members of The Climate Reality Project, the question of why students fight for climate change was asked. One student answered, “because if I don’t, who will?” It is on us to maintain and savor this beautiful planet for future generations, so let’s start now. Get involved with the Climate Reality Project MSU Campus Corps by liking their Facebook page and attending meetings and events. VIM Magazine

Waking up and suddenly realizing you’re in your 20s is a giant leap into adulthood. In today’s fast-paced society, the sooner we start saving money, the better off we will be in the long run. Read on to learn about financial habits you can implement in your daily life so you and your bank account can thank yourself later:

1. START SAVING NOW
A variety of benefits result from saving – what matters is finding tips and tricks that work for you. Try to maintain a “rainy day” savings account. This account can serve as a backup plan in case life throws any sort of curveball at you. This account ideally holds enough money for up to six months of regular living. It may seem crazy as many of us are barely in our 20s but it’s never too early to start saving
up for retirement. Opening a Roth IRA (Individual Retirement Account) allows your money to grow in a taxfree environment. Aim to start this account by saving five to ten percent of each paycheck you receive. An alternative option is participating in your employer’s 401k plan if offered. 2. BUDGET YOUR SPENDINGS
It’s easy to get carried away with spending but apps like “Mint” can help us control it. Mint is a great app because it allows users to view all personal bank accounts in one place and receive bill reminders and alerts about over-spending. In addition to this, users can categorize each transaction made, and
create a budget for each category. By identifying which aspects of life are most costly, it becomes clear where spending should be cut back. 3. CHECK YOUR CREDIT SCORE REGULARLY
Checking your credit score about every three months is important. Your credit score is a number based on your credit report that lenders use to determine your capacity to repay a loan. In simpler terms, entities use this number to decide if you are eligible to receive their money. This number is crucial when making big purchases like a new car or a house. You can check your credit score for free on websites like CreditKarma.com.

Thai Princess is one of the most authentic Thai restaurants in the greater Lansing area. Owned and operated by a local Thai family, the dishes maintain their roots in authentic spices and flavors. Searching for the taste of true Thai cuisine? We recommend the Pad Thai. Be sure to ask for some spice (but only if you can handle the heat).
Red Haven is a locally owned, farm-to-table restaurant located on the ground level of the Hamptons Apartments. The menu features food and beverages all locally crafted, grown and raised in Michigan. The menu varies daily based on what is in season, which provides an element of surprise and can mean anything from salads to brisket on a given day. For dinner, enjoy dishes served tapas style and share with your friends or your significant other! The environment is quaint and rustic with barn wood and eclectic touches that create a unique atmosphere. This sophisticated dining experience is perfect for special occasions.
“The limit does not exist” at this Lansing pizza place. This menu will make you do a doubletake with its unique combinations and out-ofthis world atmosphere. For those with adventurous palates, we recommend the “Trust Us” pizza pie, a pizza with the chef’s toppings of choice. This unique pizza makes The Cosmos is a one-of-akind eatery that never disappoints, as many customers claim.
In need of a coffee break, a filling crepe or even a salad? For Crepe Sake is a delicious spot suited for the above occasions and more. This Lansing eatery has a wide variety of scrumptious meals and a range of options to accommodate dietary restrictions. In a new era of digital thank-yous, a tweet, text or post on social media can easily be forgotten. However, a handwritten note expressing your gratitude is always memorable.
