Perspective

The unprecedented advances in information and communication technology, occurring in the second half of the twentieth century has made the global village an imminent reality. The far reaching changes have involved a series of transformation such as the convergence of technologies, the worldwide reach of the media and the global nature of their content. These changes are bringing about a real revolution based on information and learning, symbols of the information society and the new technologies. In a global technological society, it is very important that people understand how media shapes our knowledge, thinking and behaviour in order to navigate their life. Therefore there is a growing realization among educators that it is essential to reach people to understand the media and their messages so that they can access, analyze, evaluate and communicate messages through varied forms and more especially they can decode, evaluate, analyze and produce both print and electronic media. This has naturally necessitated a change in the approach of our education systems and methodologies and the recent

years have witnessed a tremendous proliferation and growth of alternative system of education. In the fore front of this effort to bring about change in education at higher levels, the IBMR School of Journalism offers Masters degree and Postgraduate diplomas in association with Sikkim Manipal University of Health, Medical and Technological sciences which enjoys wide recognition across the country. Against a backdrop of a unique learning ambience, campuses equipped with state-of the art infrastructure, the deeply committed and skilled faculty of IBMR School of Journalism work tirelessly in their endeavour to train competent professionals and help them discover a turning point in their lives, gaining skills and confidence not only to meet challenges, but to create new opportunities as well. Over the years, numerous aspiring young journos graduating from IBMR School of Journalism, have benefited and carved for themselves a niche in companies across the entire spectrum of the media and communication industry. All this has been possible because of tremendous technological innovations & intentions that have come into use. One greatest achievement is in the field of communication modes. One such parameter is that of journalism. Journalism of today incorporates state of art innovations. Present day graduates need to undergo trimming through such of a course. IBMR School of Journalism is one such Institute that provides the basics needs and much more. A course in MA Journalism or PGDJM will fulfill his aspirations. Why IBMR School of Journalism?

A single little seed, planted in the year 2004 has today, grown into a huge oak tree, thanks to the care and nurturing it has received from the management and faculty.

Today the oak stands tall, with roots reaching down to the water and its branches extended to the sky, bearing fruits aplenty.

The incredible success and abundant rich life of IBMR SCHOOL OF JOURNALISM was rightly rewarded in February 2008 when the institution was conferred with the prestigious Chanakya National Award as “The Communication School of the Year 2007� in the field of Mass Communication and Journalism Education, by Public Relations Council of India at a special ceremony by His Excellency the Governor of Karnataka, Shri Rameshwar Thakur, at Bangalore, in the presence of Shri N. Santosh Hegde, Lokayuktha Justice and Shri Prakash.P.Mallya CMD, Vijaya Bank.

explore and learn not just within the confines of their curriculum- but extending outside the boundaries of the classroom and academics. Students are encouraged to expand their horizons, enrich their thinking and grow outward. At the same time, IBMR School of Journalism firmly believes that rigorous academics is the backbone of all education and students at here go through a rigorous curriculum that packs in a total of 50 hours per week that includes 25 hours of classroom teaching, 8 hours labs, 15 hours of project work and 2 hours of media exposure.


Academic Orientation A strong academic orientation lays the foundation for life-long learning, ingraining in the youth the psyche of the eternal student. The orientation program enabled the students to familiarize themselves with the teaching methodology and aids used in the classroom, use of in-campus facilities and services, library and lab use and other services. The programmes also focus on academic and personal counseling, equipping students with necessary study skills required for academic setting, enabling students to adjust to the IBMR School of Journalism's teaching model. Special foundation programmes are offered to foreign students who may be visiting India for the first time These programmes are designed to help them understand Indian culture, society and values so that they can adapt themselves to the local conditions without problems.

Modular Curriculum We believe that it is vital for a student to have a strong focus on the subjects of study at any given time. In order to facilitate this curriculum is designed with a modular structure. This also makes it possible for students to opt for electives that supplement their areas of interest and skills

Project Work and Presentation Project Work and presentations expose students to real-world situations which require students to take the initiative, research facts, work on time bound programmes and develop communication and presentation skills which play an important role in shaping the future of the students.

The media also lends its support and encouragement so that the human resource that is available is of high quality and of relevance to the need of the media industry. Short live projects taken up during the sessions allow the students to experience real time practical situations. This helps the student to apply, illustrate or supplement classroom lessons. Students after completion of second semester will work as an internee in any recognized media institutions of the state for a period of 45 days.

Guest Lectures Eminent personalities from different media industries and walks of life are invited to visit the campus and share their experiences and give students a global outlook through interactive programmes.

Professional Development Another unique feather of the programme at the IBMR School of Journalism is the Professional Development module which runs parallel to the main programme.

Participants are engaged in a guided process of: • Self Assessment • Reflection • Identification of a personal growth plan The programme also brings a number of guest speakers to the institute, including top media experts as well as Government Officials.

Media heads are actively involved in interacting with students and the faculty ensures that the media and field visits are oriented towards exposing the students to all facets and aspects of media organization and management. Computer Lab With growing advancements in technology, computer skills are a must for any chosen field. In keeping with this trend, IBMR School of Journalism has equipped the Computer Lab with complete facilities including internet and multimedia. The lab is accessible to every student on flash of his ID card. All machines are Pentium based with broad band connectivity through V-SAT for 24-hour internet access.

Library IBMR School of Journalism has an excellent library of books, periodicals journals both national and international major magazines, audio & video cassettes and CD ROMs for ready references. The library is also equipped with past exam papers, project reports, maps and other reference materials.

Journalism Club Journalism club is a forum to stimulate intellectual environment and also to develop and deliver study programmes that extend beyond the limitations of the traditional classrooms. Through this club special lectures from experts from various fields, seminars, symposiums, workshops, model press meets, personality development programmes will be arranged periodically. The programmes are arranged and conducted by the student under the guidance and support of administration and faculty members. This club offers a platform for the students to discover the potential of their hidden talents.

Bharathiar University Named after the great national poet Subramania Bharathi, Bharathiar University was established in the year 1982 in Coimbatore by the Government of Tamilnadu, under the provision of the Bharathiar University Act (Act 1 of 1982), The Bharathiar University is accredited with 'A' Grade by NAAC and placed among the top ten universities in India. Courses Offered Master Degree in Journalism and Mass Communication (MAJM) The Masters Degree in Journalism and Mass Communication has been introduced from the academic year 2004 by Sikkim Manipal University (SMU) to provide students with a firm career in Journalism and communication. This course aims to develop the ability for critically thinking backed by theoretical and practical applications in media and communication. The purpose of this programme is to impart professional training to students and to improve their employment opportunities in the ever evolving Media Industry. The Degree is awarded by the Manipal University, Sikkim.

Duration of the Program The duration of the program (MAJM) is two years. However the student is permitted to take maximum of four years to complete the course. The duration for completion of Post Graduate Degree in Journalism and Media (PGDJM) is one year.

Medium The medium of instruction will be in English.

Credit System Credit system is a systematic way of describing as educational program by attaching credits to its components. In this program each credit consists of 30 hours of study.

Academic Calendar The Academic calendar starts from 1st February and ends on 31st January of subsequent year.

Master Thesis (Project Work) In the scope and duration of the course, the master project is the postgraduate student's major effort of the year, an indepth exploration of a topic as a journalist would pursue it. The master project is intended to demonstrate student's ability to conduct and sustain research over several months, their ability to gather and organize large amounts of material and their capacity to present that material clearly and accurately.

All students shall take up in communication / journalism and allied areas for master thesis. The topic and guide shall be approved by the institute and the advisory board of studies. The master thesis should be submitted two weeks before the last working day of the fourth semester. The viva-voce test shall be conducted based on the findings of the study and overall comprehension of the subject. The viva-voce would be conducted by the Chairman of advisory board of studies with the staff member and two outside experts, who are the members of advisory board of studies.

Internal Assessment A student shall submit five assignments in each subject. They shall be submitted in the form of a Record Book and it would be evaluated both by internal and external examiner. The internal assessments are based on the assignments and class tests conducted by the institute. The internal marks awarded will hold well even if a candidate reappears for the examination.

Evaluation And Grading The evaluations are conceived, developed and administered on a rigorous and fair basis which brings out the best in students to prepare for challenging careers. Continuous evaluation is done through assignments and practicals. In each subject a student should secure at least 35% of marks and 35% in term end examination and an aggregate of 40% to pass. The degrees are awarded by Sikkim Manipal University of Health Medical and Technological Sciences in Distance Education. Based on the student performance, the following grading system will be adopted.

A. Excellent +70% B. Very Good +60% C. Good +50% D. Satisfactory +40%

There is no formal class session. The project is meant to provide an intellectual challenge to a student that goes beyond daily or weekly stories.

Scope of Journalism Course

The course aims at developing media professionals by equipping them with a unique perspective of Journalism in the Indian context, through a holistic approach. Our endeavor is to mould a new class of journalists and media professionals with emphasis on academics, practical experience, sophistication and objectivity, with a keen sense of social responsibility and a profound awareness of the challenges in an Indian perspective. Reporting and writing are the central disciplines of journalism. Through laboratory exercises and out door assignments it helps them to develop a variety of skills and the ability to write in a language that is correct, clear, straightforward and concise. Students learn to edit new copy and to write headlines for various media. They are also introduced to the requirements of the fast-growing online or 'new' media. They are required to know about computer programmes and software packages. Students in the institute work towards careers in public relations, newspapers and magazines, advertising, online journalism, electronic media etc.

Admission Procedure

Admission to IBMR Journalism School is a two stage process based on the cumulative performance of the applicant in the written test and degree marks. • A graduate in any discipline with 45 per cent marks in aggregate from any University recognized as equivalent is eligible to apply for the course. • The intake for the course shall be 35. • All the students shall appear for the entrance test. • The Entrance Test shall consist of questions on general knowledge and media related areas for 100 marks. The duration of the Test shall be for two hours. • Selection of the candidates shall be made on the basis of the merit obtained at the Entrance Test, marks scored in the degree examination.
