“Children, we have a special treat for class today,”Miss Betty said. “Today we will learn about people who have the jobs of helping others.” The students in Miss Betty’s class were excited to find out who their guests would be. They took turns naming people who helped others. Soon thedoor opened and in came Fire Chief Mike, Officer Dan and Nurse Sally.
“These people spend their days helpingother people. Their jobs are very interestingand we all need them very much,” Miss Betty said. “Now, please sit quietly and listen while they tell us about their work.”
First up was Officer Dan. “Hello kids, a lot of you know me from when you visited the Brite Star Police Station. For the rest of you, I’m Officer Dan. “Can you tell me some things that the police do for you and your family?” “The police protect us frombad people and help us obey laws,” said Miles. “Good answer, Miles. Those are some of the important ways we help others,” OfficerDan said.
Next up was Nurse Sally. “Hi girlsand boys. My name is Nurse Sally and I work at Brite Star Hospital. What kinds of things do you think I do in my work there?” “You take care of sick people,” Marjorie said. “You help them get better.” “That’s right. We help patients feel comfortable when they are in pain. We give them medicines and help them with exercises. We also help by calling the doctors when patients need extra help and reporting what we know about thepatients.”
As Fire Chief Mike headed to the front of the class, Miles yelled, “Hi Mr. Sanchez, I mean Chief Mike!” “Hello Miles, how are you? And, helloMaria,” Chief Mike said. “Hi Dad, Maria smiled. She was surprised to see her dad at school. “So kids, what do you think a fireman does? Chief Mike asked. Landon spoke first, “Firemen rescue catsfrom trees!” Everyone laughed, even Chief Mike.
“Well, we do that once in a while,” Chief Mike said. “But we also put out fires and work to save homes and businesses from burning. We help the police when there are car accidents by bringing the fire truck in case the car catches on fire. We also bring an ambulance for hurt people. Another thing we do is work very closely with the nurses at the Brite Star Hospital because we bring hurt or sick people there.”
“So kids,” Miss Betty asked, “what isone thing these wonderful people have in common?” The students looked ateach other. They weren’t sure what to say. Finally Miles shouted, “I know! They take care of people. They helppeople.”
“Yes!” everyone else cheered.
For the rest of class the three guests answered the kids’ questions. Theyshowed them their uniforms and their badges and even their medals. It was fun. “What would some of you like to do when you grow up?” asked Officer Dan. Landon said, “I want to be just like you. I want to arrest bad guys and protectpeople.”
“I want to be like Nurse Sally,” Marjorie said. “I want to work at Brite Star Hospital and take care of people. I visit my grandmother on weekends and help my mother take care of her. I love helping people.” “Sounds like you’re already a good helper, Marjorie,” said Nurse Sally.
“I want to be like my dad,” said Maria. “I want to be the first girl fire chief in Brite Star. I want to rescue cats and put out fires and help anyone who needshelp.” Chief Mike gave Maria a big hug.
Missy had been quiet all morning but now she jumped up and said, “I want to take care of animals at the Brite Star Ranch.Animals need to be helped and cared for just like people.” “You’re right, Missy,” Miss Betty said andshe gave Missy ahug.
“Would you like to see our fire truck, police car and ambulance?” Chief Mikeasked. “Yay!” the kids cheered. Then they followed Officer Dan, Chief Mike and Nurse Sally outside. They had never been so close to these helper cars andtrucks.
Landon got to sit in the police car and Officer Dan put his police hat on Landon. The rest of the kids thought that was awesome. It was an exciting day but most importantly the Brite Star Kids learned about caring for others.
Chief Mike showed the kids around the fire truck with hoses and ladders. He even blew the siren for them. He let them carefully climb up on the back of the truck. It was cool!
Nurse Sally showed the kids the inside of the ambulance. Miles lay down on the bed in the back and Nurse Sally wrapped his arm in abandage. Then it was time for the special guests to leave. The kids waved goodbye. It had been a goodday!
Think About It
1. Who are the special guests at Brite StarSchool? 2. How does Nurse Sally help others? 3. What things do policemen do to help people? 4. What do firemen do to help people? 5. What does Maria wantto be when she grows up?
Let’s Work Together!
Helping careers are very important. Firemen, police officers, nurses and doctors are great examples of people whohelp and care for others. Do you know anyone whoworksin any of these careers?
I Will . . .
• Notice police officers, firemen and others whohelp people. • Thank a police officer for protecting people. • Think about howIcancare for and help others.
