The Brite Star Kids loved hanging out at the After School Club while their parents were at work. They spent so much time together that they all became good friends.

Sometimes the kids played ball. Some days they played tag. Some days they played on the swings and slide. Whatever they played they always had fun together!

The After School Club leaders also helped the Brite Star Kids with their homework. Sometimes they taught lessons, too. One day Mrs. Humphreys told them about kids who didn’t have an after school club at their school.

“What do you mean?” Anita asked. “Do their parents not have jobs? Can those kids go right home after school?” “Not necessarily,” Mrs. Humphreys said. “Some neighborhoods can’t afford a program like ours. Some kids don’t have a lot of thethings you all have.” “That’s sad. I’m glad we have the After School Club to stay at while our parents work,” Anita said.

“Those children do have schools to attend. They just don’t have an after school program like we have,” Mrs. Humphreys explained. “Then what do they doif their parents are still at work when school ends?” Anita asked. “My mom and dad don’t get home until a couple of hours after school is out.” “Well if their parents can afford it, they send their children to daycare or a babysitter comesto their home. If there isn’t enough money for that, the kids might be at home by themselves,”Mrs. Humphreys said.

“I’ve seen a place called The Brite Star Boys and Girls Club on our bus ride to school,” Miles said. “Is that like our club?” “Sort of,” Mrs. Humphreys said. “It’s a place where children and even teenagers can go for free. It’s supported by generous donations from very kind people who care about kids.” “So those kids do have a kind of afterschool club!” Miles said. Everyone cheered!

“Let me read you a little about the Boys and Girls Club,” Mrs. Humphreys said, as she opened a brochure. “This is the mission or purpose of the Boys and Girls Club. It is “To enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.”

“That’s kind of like the mission here at our school,” Miles said. “You’re right. It’s very similar,” Mrs. Humphreys said.

“I just had an idea,” Mrs. Humphreys said, “it might be a good field trip for us to visit the Brite Star Boys and Girls Club. What do you think?” Everyone cheered for that great idea! “We could visit them, then invite the kids from their club to come visit us at ourclub,” said Miles. “That’s a great idea, Miles,” said Mrs. Humphreys.

The next day Mr. Emerson drove his big yellow school bus to the After School Club. The children climbed on the bus. They were all very excited! They loved field trips! The bus drove through Brite Star to The Boys and Girls Club. The kids weren’t sure what to expect when they got there.

There were lots of children at the Boys and Girls Club. Some were young children, just like the kids at After School Club. Some were older children. There were boys and girls. At first the two groups just looked at each other but very quickly they all began playing together. The Brite Star kids learned many ways that the Boys and Girls Club children were just like them.

They also learned ways that they were different as they talked with the Boys and Girls Clubs kids. “Where does your family live?” Landon asked a boy named Peter. “It’s just my mom and me. We live in the Brite Star Apartment Complex,” Peter answered. “That girl over there lives in the same place.” He pointed to a girl across the playground.

The next day the kids were eager totell Mrs. Humphreys what they learned about the Boys and Girls Club kids. Some stories were about ways their lives were different from the Boysand Girls Club kids. They learned some kids lived in apartments, not houses. Some even stayed with their grandparents. Other stories were about how they were alike. There were kids in both groups who loved sports. Some liked music and art. Some loved pizza. Some didn’t like ice cream. They learned that the Boys and Girls Club kids were just kids likethem!

“Well you certainly learned a lot,” Mrs. Humphreys said. “It sounds like you made some new friends. How would you like to do something nice for the Boys and Girls Club?” Everyone thought that was a great idea. But, what could they do? “How about if we collect money for them to get something special for their club?”Mrs. Humphreys asked. “Yay!” everyone cheered.

For the next month, the kids brought money for the Boys and Girls Club. Some kids saved part of their allowance money. Some asked their parents to pay them to do extra chores. They put all their money in the big jar on Ms. Humphrey’s desk. As the jar got more filled the kids got more excited about the gift.

When the jar was full the After School Club invited the Boys and Girls club to visit. Landon presented the jar of money to Peter as the other kids watched. “This is for your club,” Landon said. “We hope the Boys and Girls Club stays open forever!” The teachers and parents from both clubs cheered. Then everyone enjoyed a barbecue together with their new friends at the BriteStar After School Club.

Think About It • Why did the Brite Star kids need the After SchoolClub? • How much did the Boys and Girls Club charge for kids to come there? • Did the After School Club kids know about differentclubs? • Why did Mrs. Humphreys think it would be good for her students to visit The Boys and Girls Club? • How were the After School Club kids and the Boys and Girls Club kids the same? Let’s Work Together! Have you thought that there might be kids in your own town who do not have all the wonderful things you enjoy? How can you find out about families and kids who might need help? How could you help them? Are you willing to show kindness and generosity to them? I Will . . . • Be willing to helpby donating toys and clothes and even money. • Find out if there are places in my own townlike The Boys and Girls Club and see how I could help them. • Pay attention to places around the world where there have been stormsor earthquakes and send money there to help the people.

It’s OK to want things like new toys and new clothes. But it’s also important tobe willing to give up some new things in order to donate money to help others.
