Camp Brite Star, Fire Safety Fun

Lindsey stood by an unlit campfire with the kids gathered around her. “Today,

we’re learning all about fire safety,” she

announced.

“Fire can be useful, but we need to know how to handle it safely!”

Lindsey pointed to a bucket of water and a fire extinguisher. “These

are tools that help us put

out fires if they get too big,” she explained. “It’s always important to have these nearby.”

Lindsey reminded the kids, “When we’re around a fire, we

need to stay a safe distance away. Sitting too close can be dangerous, so let’s make sure we give it space.”

Using stones to create a fire ring, Lindsey showed the kids how to set up a safe campfire. “A fire ring keeps the flames contained,” she said. “This helps prevent the fire from spreading.”

Lindsey demonstrated how to build a small fire using dry wood and tinder.

“We use dry materials because they burn safely and don’t

create too much smoke,” she explained. The kids watched closely, excited to learn.

With everyone watching from a safe distance, Lindsey showed them how to strike a match. “Only adults should light fires,” she said, “and

we always light one match at a time to stay in control.”
As the fire crackled softly, Lindsey explained, “We need to keep an eye on the fire and never leave it alone. Keeping it small helps us stay safe and enjoy it responsibly.”

The kids roasted marshmallows, using long sticks to keep a safe distance from the fire. “See how the sticks help you stay safe?” Lindsey said, smiling as they enjoyed their treats.

When they finished, Lindsey demonstrated how to put out the fire. She poured water over the embers and stirred them with a stick. “Always make sure it’s completely out before leaving,” she said. “This keeps the forest safe.”

Lindsey let the kids practice putting out a small fire, carefully supervised. They poured water and stirred the ashes, proud of their new fire safety skills.

As

they sat by the now-cold fire pit, Lindsey asked, “What

was the most important thing you learned today?”
The kids shared their thoughts, understanding how to stay safe around fire.

Think About:

1. Why is it important to keep a safe distance from a fire?

2. What should you always have nearby when you start a fire?

3. How do you make sure a fire is completely out?

Let's Work Together: By learning fire safety, we can enjoy campfires responsibly and keep ourselves and the environment safe.

I Will: I will remember to stay safe around fire, always putting it out completely and keeping a safe distance.

The Importance of Knowing: Knowing how to handle fire safely protects us and the world around us. Fire safety is a skill we can use to enjoy nature while keeping everyone safe.
