“Woohoo! It’s almost the first day of school! I’m going to learn to read and do math and makescience projects and. . . .”

“I’ve never seen anyone so excited about school,” Brooke said. But she was glad her little sister was lookingforwardtofirst grade.

Whit felt very grown up when she went school shopping with Mom. They bought clothes and shoes and a cool pink backpack with a cute puppy on it. They went to lunch together and Whit talked the whole time. She wasso excited! “Wait ‘til I show mysisters all the things webought!” she said.

“What do I wear? What do I wear?” Whit shouted as she ran into Sam’s room. She washolding all of her new outfits and a few old ones, too! “Do first graders wear shorts or pants or dresses?” Whit tried on every one of her new outfits. She did a fashion show for her sisters and they voted on their favorite. Finally she chose her first day of school dress.

Whit jumped out of bed early Monday morning. No one else wasup—not ever her momand dad! She put on her new dress, brushed her hair and sat at the kitchen table, waiting for everyone else to get up.

She waited and waited. Finally she ran through the house singing, “First day! First day! It’s my first day of first grade!”

The sisters chattered about school as they ate breakfast. But, Ken noticed that Whit wasvery quiet. She even stopped eating her cereal. “Is something wrong, Whit?” Ken asked. “No. Yes.Maybe. I don’t know,” Whit whispered. “I just remembered that I’m going to be by myself. What if I don’t know whatto do? What if I need help? None of you will be there.”

“It can be kind of scary,” Ken said, giving Whit a hug. “I remember that on myfirst day of school I didn’t know anyone. I wasscared that I wouldn’t know what to do—just like you’re saying. When I went into the classroom no one paid any attention to me.” “But then, do you know whathappened?” she asked. Whit shook her head as a tear rolled down her cheek. “Agirl named Leah came and asked if I wanted to play. She introduced me to some other girls and soon we were all playing together. Leah is still one of my best friends!”

“Do you think I’ll makea friend right away?” Whit asked quietly. “I think so,” Ken answered. “And when weget home, we’ll have a tea party celebration and you can tell us all about your first day!” “Promise?” Whit asked.

“Pinky promise!” Ken said, locking pinky fingers with her little sister. “That will be fun,” Whit said. She took a deep breath and felt a little bit braver.

“Hey little sis,” Samsaid, “I’ve been saving something for you.” She washiding something behind her back. “If you get scared let this help you remember that we’ll all be together again right after school.” She stuck a bright pink puppy sticker on Whit’s dress. “Ohhh, it looks just like mystuffed puppy, Fluffy!” Whit exclaimed. “Thank you! It will help me think about being with all of you after school.”

“Time to go!” Mom called. They all climbed into the car. Ken, Brooke and Sam laughed and talked all the way to school. ButWhit wasquiet. She wastrying tobe brave. At school the three older sisters hugged Mom and Whit then ran to their classrooms. Mom walked Whit to first grade and hugged her goodbye. Whit took one step inside the door and stopped. Kids were playing together. The teacher was busy. No one paid anyattention toher.Tearswelledup in her eyes. But then Mrs. Barr sawher. “Welcome to first grade,” she said. “Let me show you where to put your backpack.” As Whit put her backpack in the cubby she sawthat the zipper was open.

There wasa bright yellow paper inside. Brooke had drawn a bright red heart with a big sun and lots of stars. Whit smiled. Then she patted the puppy sticker Sam had put on her shirt. “It’s going to be okay,” she thought. “I will be okay.” Just then a girl grabbed her hand. “Hi! I’m Katie. Come play with me and my friends.” The day flew by as Whit played, listened to stories and made a craft. It wasa busy day! She knew everyone’s names and she knew she wasgoing to make some good friends in first grade. School was just as muchfun as she thought it would be.

When the sisters got home that afternoon they met in Ken’s room for a tea party just as Ken had promised. They put on pretty hats and snacked on cookies while Whit told her sisters everything about her day, her class and her new friends. Then she said, “Each of you helped me be brave today. Thank you for being the best sisters ever!”
