Whit copied every word exactly like the sample Ken made for her. She wasmaking special party invitations! Whit carefully wrote out three of them— one for each of her sisters. They were for a birthday tea for Fluffy. The stuffed dog had been Whit’s favorite toy for all of her life. Whit wasexcited to have her sisters celebrate Fluffy withher!
Sam wasthe first one to see the invitation on her door. “Atea party for a stuffed dog? I’m not going to that. Fluffy isn’t even real!” Sam said. She tossed the invitation on the floor and went outside. Brooke came in later and sawthe crumpled paper by Sam’s room before she even read her own invitation. Brooke always did what Sam did, so she threw hers on the floor, too!
Ken smiled when she sawher invitation. She grabbed paper and markers and drew a birthday picture for Fluffy. Just then Sam came in and sawwhatKen wasdoing. “You’re making a picture for a stuffed dog?”
“Yes,”Ken answered. “What are you giving Fluffy for her birthday?” “I’m not going to a tea for a stuffed dog. That’s dumb!” Sam answered. “Youhave to come. Do it for Whit,” Ken begged.
Ken knew that Brooke would do whatever Samdid so she went to Brooke’sroom. “Won’t the birthday tea party be fun?” she asked. “What party?” Brooke asked.
“Fluffy’s birthday tea party. Didn’t you read the invitation?” Ken asked, pointing to the paper on the floor. “Sam threw her invitation away so I did, too. But I love tea parties!” Brooke ran to see if Samhad changed her mind.
“Are we . . . I mean YOU going to Fluffy’s party?” Brooke asked. Sam had a sneaky look on her face as she answered, “Sure. I’ll go. But I have an idea that will make it even more fun.” “Oh good!” Brookesquealed. “Whatis it?” “I’ll tell you all about it,” Sam answered. She pulled Brookeclose and startedwhispering in herear.
Fluffy’s party day wasa busy one for Whit. She set pretty dishes on the table. She folded napkins to look fancy. Mom helped her pour pretend tea (it wasreally apple juice) into a colorful teapot. Then she used her crayons to decorate party hats for her and her sisters. She even made one for Fluffy! Whit worked very hard. She wanted this party to be super special!
Fluffy satin a place of honor on Whit’s bed until party time. But when Whit went to get her . . . she was gone! Whit looked under the bed, in the closet . . . all around her room but Fluffy wasnowhere to be found! Tears were running down Whit’s cheeks when she ran to Ken. “Fluffy is gone! I can’t find her anywhere!” she cried. “I’ll help you look!” Ken said. They searched the whole house, every room, every closet —even the dishwasher but they didn’t find Fluffy.
“Sam! Brooke! Fluffy is missing. Help us look for her!” Ken called. “Oh good. No Fluffy means no silly party,” Sam said. “Whit probably just forgot where she put her,” Brooke said. She and Sam pretended to look for Fluffy but they didn’t look very hard.
Finally Brooke and Samsat down and watched Ken and Whit search. “I always take her to school in my backpack,” Whit said. “Maybe I forgot to put her back in it when I came home.” She sank down on the floor and cried.
Ken wassad to see her little sister so upset. But, she had noticed something—Sam and Brooke weren’t looking for Fluffy. They didn’t seem to care about the missing dog at all. In fact they were smiling and giggling. Something wasn’t right. “Sam, what’s going on,” Ken said. “What do you know about Fluffy?” Ken asked. Sam tried to look tough. But then shestartedto giggle. “It’s just a joke,” she said when she caught her breath. “It wasfunny watching you and Whit search everywhere for that silly dog. Under sofa cushions, in the dishwasher! So funny!”
“WHERE Is FLUFFY?” Ken spoke each word slowly and firmly. She wasn’t messing around. Sam pointed out the window and there wasFluffy hanging by a pink ribbon from Sam’s soccer goal. “Why did you do this?” Ken asked. “You hurt Whit and ruined her special tea party.”
“It wasjust a joke,” Sam mumbled. “Fluffy is fine. I didn’t hurt her. She just got some fresh air.”Sam laughed and so did Brooke. “Brooke, did you help with this?” Ken asked. Brooke stopped laughing and said, “Umm, maybe a little.” She looked guilty.
“It’s silly to have a party for a stuffed dog,” Sam said. “It was important to Whit,” Ken said, “and she wanted to share it with us.” Ken untied Fluffy and gave her to Whit. Sam watched Whit hug Fluffy. She couldn’t remember a time when Whit didn’t love that toy. “You’re right, Ken,” she said. “Sometimes myjokes are only funny to me. Whit, will you forgive me?”
“Me too, Whit. Forgive me, too,” Brooke said. There wasa big sisters hug then they went inside for a birthday tea party for Fluffy. They wore the hats Whit made. They had tea and cookies and sang happy birthday to Fluffy. They laughed and talked and sang just as sisters should do!
Think About It 1.Whit really loved her special dog, Fluffy. Do you have a special toy? What is it? 2. Why did Whit want to celebrate Fluffy’s birthday? 3. Why didn’t Sam wantto come to theparty? 4. Who helped Whit when she was sad?
5. Who helped Sam see that her joke wasunkind? Let’s Work Together! Everyone hurts someone’s feelings once in a while. Sometimes it’s on purpose. Sometimes it’s not. Sometimes it’s because they are trying to be funny. Have your feelings been hurt? Was it because of a mean joke? How did someone help you feel better?
I will . . . Remember that myjokes on others should always be kind.
