Cynthia was a Brite Star kid. She wasn’t an absolutely perfect girl but she was very good. She was good at obeying her parents. She also obeyed all the rules at the Brite Star Daycare Center. Well, except for one time when Cynthia and her best friend, Sarah, disobeyed arule.
Sarah’s father died when she was only 2 years old. Her mother worked hard to make money for the family. But she couldn’t afford to buy many extra things for them. In fact, Sarah didn’t even have enough clothes to keep the required extra set in her cubbyhole at the After School Club.
Cynthia had lots of toys and clothes. But, her parents had a rule that she could not loan her things to other kids. That’s because Cynthia had let others borrow her things but she never got them back. It was okay for others to play with her toys or wear her clothes but she could not allow them to take her things home.

The After School Club had a rule that every child must keep an extra set of clothes in his or her cubbyhole. That was just in case the child had an accident and needed to changeclothes.

One day when the children came in from playing outside Cynthia didn’t see Sarahanywhere. She looked in the classroom. She looked in the restroom. Sarah was nowhere to befound! So she ran to the teacher and told her Sarah was missing. The teacher asked Cynthia to run back outside to see if Sarah was still on the playground.

Cynthia ran outside. She looked on the slide. She looked in theplay tunnel. But she couldn’t find Sarahanywhere.

Then Cynthia remembered the special hiding place she and Sarah had. It was in the big tower with the climbing wall on the outside. They liked to hide from other kids in there and share their secrets. She ran to look inside the tower.

Sure enough, Sarah was huddled on the floor ofthe tower. She was crying.
“What’s the matter?” Cynthiaasked. She was very kind to her friend.

Sarah took a deep breath and pointed to a big wet spot on her pants. It was caked with wet sand. “I had an accident,” she whispered. “I spilled my juice box on my pants. It makes me look like a baby who wet my pants.”

Cynthia knew that Sarah had a problem. If she went into the classroom with wet pants, some of the kids would make fun of her for sure. But, Sarah didn’t have an extra set of clothes to change into. “Wait here. I have a plan,” Cynthia said. She crawled out of the tower and took off running.

A few minutes later Cynthia was back and she had her own set of extra clothes. “Here, put these on,” she said. “I can’t do that,” Sarah said. “It’s against the rules to wear someone else’s clothes. And, it’s against your parents’ rules.”
“I’ll think about that later,” Cynthia said. Then she stood guard while Sarah changed into the dry clothes.

Sarah stuffed her wet, dirty clothes into the plastic bag that Cynthia’s extra clothes had been in. Then the two friends went back to the classroom and Sarah put the bag in her cubbyhole.

Later, when Cynthia’s mom picked herup she could tell something was wrong. “What’sup?” she asked. Cynthia took a deep breath and told her mom about breaking the rules. She waited to hear what her punishment would be. But, there was no punishment! Cynthia’s mother said, “Following the rules is one way to be good. But, being kind and helpful to someone else is an even more important way to be good.”

Later than night Cynthia heard her mom talking with Sarah’s mom on the phone. “Why don’t I just send another set of extra clothes with Cynthia tomorrow?” she asked kindly. “Then Sarah canuse the ones she wore home today for her extra set.”

The next day Cynthia saw Sarah tuck an extra set of clothes into her cubbyhole and she smiled. “Thank you,” Sarah whispered as she went to the rug for story time. Cynthia thought that being good had never felt so good. She was happier than ever to be a BriteStar kid!

Think About It
1. WasCynthia usually obedient or disobedient? 2. What difficult thing had happened in Sarah’s family? 3. Why did Cynthia’s parents have rules about her things? 4. Why did Cynthia help when Sarah had a problem? 5. Why wasn’t Cynthia punished for breaking her parents’ rule?
Let’s Work Together!
Itis important to obey your parents and to keep their rules. Butit’s also important to be kind and helpful to others when you can.
I Will . . .
• Tryto obey my parents’rules. • Find ways to be helpful to others. • Make wise choices about choosing to help others or to obey the rules.
How do you feel aboutobeying?
Do you believe that your parents’ rules are for your own good? Isit difficult for you to obey? Do you like to help others? Does it make you feel good to be kind and caring? What would your parents say if you broke a rule in order to help someone? How would you make the choice between obeying or helping?
