The site is located in the heart of Tiban, Batam, Indonesia. The owner initially owns a piece of land in a tiny and packed residential area where with the size of just 450sqm, barely having enough space for parking area. There was also an old building that they had and they have decided to demolish and start building something new. A contractor from the neighbouring area got the job and commissioned the interior design to me, unfortunately, the project did not work out well in the end and the construction has been stopped.
The funciton of the building is a house for four people, a family-oriented-house. Therefore, we decided to have a three storey building, the first two storeys are for living and family activities while the third one is the roof are where they are able to hang their laundry and a place to install the exhaust fan and air-conditioner compressors. The first floor consists of: guest’s room, living room, kitchen and a toilet. The second floor consists of: one master bedroom with walk-in-wardrobe, two junior bedrooms and a family room. Finally, the third floor consist of some part that is flat.

NIRVANA WHAT IF AN ARCHITECTURE CAN BE NATURE ITSELF?
The client who originated from Batam, has high fascination towards Javanese exotic wood and has insisted that most of the items in her house will be contructed or finished with those woods. Aside from that, she is also interested in Javanese Ancient Carvings which exists in most furniture and door frames. In this design, I have decided to keep the color scheme as simple as possible, to have the wood color and the carvings be the main attention in the house. Since the house has very small built-up area, me and the contractor discussed that we should have higher ceiling levels (4m) to compensate for the ‘grandeur’ since we are going for the Ancient Java theme. For most of the furniture, the structure is made out of plywood, compartments out of particle board, the cabinet leaves are made out of Javanese Jati woods and mirrors.

SAMPURNA
Owned by the RT (Rukun Tetangga), the administrative division of a neighbourhood in Tiban, the site is of the building is in residential area with the building already up but under renovation. The client commissioned me and a contractor to design and build the furniture after the whole house has been built. However, the client nor the contractor has drawing of the house, so I had to measure the dimensions and had to do a drawing from scratch. I was only commissioned to do the first floor since the ground floor has been designed. It consists of one master bedroom, two junior bedrooms and a family room. The client is fond of minimalists style and he is rather tight on budget. So the solution is to keep it as clean and simple as possible while maintaining aesthetics.

gRAND NELAYAN
A restaurant in Sei Jang, Tanjung Pinang, Indonesia which has been running for almost ten years. The client approached us (me and my civil engineer partner) mentioned that he needs to have a new design since now he is taking care of the restaurant as his father plans to retire. The

receptions, meaning most of the eating halls should be opened and stages are of priority. Having initially 600 sqm of area in the ground floor, the client wishes to extend it to 900 sqm making it deeper and longer. Initially the design of the restaurant was a mixture of everything, it was classical, modern, post-modern and industrial. It was basically a lump of mess. However, we adviced the client based on their brand image they had and decided to keep it focused in one style, classical modern, enabling guests to feel the grandeur during wedding reception. Most parts of the building is white and the floor tiles are cream colored. The ceiling and the window has the most ‘modern’ touch in terms of the black outline in the frames.

COMMISSIONED BY THE GOVERNMENT WHAT IS AN ARCHITECTURE THAT IS MADE FOR THE PEOPLE?
Located in a semi-elite residential area, EverGreen, Batam, Indonesia. The client is a couple who are about to get married thus planning ahead. The client has a preference of minimalism and they like the texture of wood. However they don’t like black color that much as they think that it is not a good
color
for
‘fengshui’.
Regardless, the house has two storeys with the ground floor consisting of living room, kitchen, dining and also a guest room. The laundry is located on the ground at the end of dining room (there is a glass door that leads to the tiny garden). First floor consists of one master bedroom and one junior bedroom and two bathrooms in total.

WITHOUT A SENSE OF CARING, THERE CAN BE NO SENSE OF COMMUNITY -ANTHONY J.D’ANGELO-
The design is straightforward because what I have to do is to design the house according to the experience and what I want to achieve is a different of house impression for every client. Upon entering, they will be greeted with a foyer for wearing shoes before going to the living room, there will be metal fins allowing ventilation while conserving views. From the living room, the view to the dining is apparent. The design style for this project is Subtle Modern.

Green island
A project in Mainland Penang, Malaysia. The client is a chain restaurant owner, owning three branches of his own restaurant serving western food. He wished to have a makeover for his restaurant as he feels that his restaurant does not speak for the brand that he is making. So our design begins from the brand name, ‘Green Island’. We were thinking of having most of the crucial
furniture

colors
and
making
supportive furniture as ‘island’ colored (like color of sand, color of palm tree). There was one design limitation that the client set upon us, which is to remain most of the seats and tables. We also proposed a green wall pottery on the wall in the main entrance which is the termination point the moment restaurant guests arrive.

importantly, better impression of the restaurant. Previously, they had to do discussion in the tables in the restaurant during the day when there are not many people around. Having a new office, will solve this problem. The office is situated in between cashier and the juice station.
This
increases better workflow with short travel distance from the cashier to the office and shortens the time the owner has to wait when requesting beverages for his customer while having a negotiation. The office design takes a different style from the restaurant because office is in a hierarchical position, hence, I want the customers to feel that they have entered a special room once they are in.

opportunity. Discussions about the design were straightforward as they are clear on what they want and the main guide is to just follow the brand color, which is bright red and white. The brand also gives of modern and professional vibe which is then translated into the design. The client also requested to have a bed in the director’s office so he will be able to rest during worktime and able to spend the night at the office when work piles up.

Naturally manmade
A library project during my bachelor times. The brief was to design a library which reacts to the surround context so it can be the main point where people who loves reading can gather. It is located in a park where it is surrounded by neighbouring residential houses. For the architecture part, the building is built with mostly metal and concrete and is situated directly above the lake to give off a sense of endlessness, a different kind of experience when reading. The columns are designed in such a way that it feels like walking through a forest with a lot of trees surrounding. Also the facade is an abstraction of looking at sun flare through leaves from below. The boxes are shelves for the books, directly attached to the steel columns.
