Transportation Lots of gear to transport? Then you need the Shuttle. You can load it up with all of your gear and because of the unique design it’s still easy to push. When we developed the Space Station Shuttle, we opted to start the process from scratch and come up with something totally unique and original better than what was, and still is, already available. Our first objective was to design something that was balanced when loaded. This is why the wheels have been positioned underneath the base and not at the end. This ensures greatly reduced lifting weights and pushing loads, compared to traditional seatbox trolleys and barrows, which makes it easier to use. We also wanted a system that could be loaded with everything, not just the seatbox, which is why the base is long enough to fit a carryall onto the main base.

The additional Utility Bag that hangs between the two arms is designed for clothing, pole rollers, bait – in fact anything you want, as long as it fits. You can even load your rod holdall onto the Shuttle if you want. Because the vast majority of venues have paths to walk on we have chosen solid wheels which means you will have no annoying punctures. The design of the Shuttle enables it to be quickly unloaded and dismantled to fit easily into most cars. Although called the Space Station Shuttle, it can be used to transport all Preston OnBox seatboxes and almost all other manufacturers boxes too. The Space Shuttle is a specially designed barrow style tackle transporter, that has been developed to carry the Space Station, XBox and other seatboxes using the additional converter bar (supplied). The design also provides a large luggage loading area for carryalls and an additional removable Utility Bag between the handles for clothing, pole rollers etc. In addition, the Shuttle handle bar system incorporates a foam covered cross bar that can be used to support rod holdalls. Once the Shuttle is loaded, its design enables the angler to transport a complete set of tackle with ease compared to traditional seatbox trolleys. This has been achieved by positioning the wheels directly beneath the heaviest part of the loaded shuttle, giving optimum balance. The Shuttle can be quickly assembled and dismantled to fit comfortably inside most car boots.

ROllers Why use two rollers? Pole Rollers - we all use them, but do we use them correctly. And why is there a current trend for using two rollers? Pole rollers are essential for match anglers and over the years many designs have been tried. Preston were the first to design the folding tripod type roller a few years ago and since then we have refined the design and utilised lighter materials. We now have four rollers in the range, three work on the ‘V’ tripod design and one on a flat design. These all have extending telescopic legs for perfect adjustment on uneven banks and are locked using a cam lock clip that is quick and secure. The rollers themselves are made of a high density foam that is gentle on the pole and protects it from damage.

Why Two Rollers? In the last few years using two rollers together has become more popular and with good reason. With anglers now fishing at longer lengths, often with very short ‘up in the water’ rigs, pole bounce when shipping out, even with the stiffest poles, has become a more common problem. Actually the problem isn’t the pole bounce, it’s the resulting tangles that occur that are the big problem and even our top consultants suffer. By using two rollers correctly positioned, pole bounce is greatly reduced and so are the tangles. Two rollers also make a massive difference when cupping in bait at longer lengths too. Which two rollers you choose to use makes very little difference and most anglers have their own preference. Even our consultants can’t all agree on which is best! Looking at it sensibly,

using a Pro Flat Roller at the front gives more lateral movement than a ‘V’ roller. This is useful when playing a fish that runs sideways whilst unshipping. A ‘V’ roller at the back prevents too much lateral movement and keeps the pole in the right alignment.

The Right Position What is more important is how you position them. The front roller must always be slightly higher than the back one. The difference doesn’t have to be much but it really helps to stop the pole bumping when it leaves the rear roller. The simplest way to get the rollers in the right position (assuming you are using 14.5 metres or longer) is to set the front roller about 3 metres back from your box and the rear roller about 4 metres from the end of the pole when fully shipped back. With your top kit unshipped the pole should be at a comfortable height for you to reach. If the pole feels light when you hold the unshipped end, you need to move the rear roller back, or the front roller closer to you. Once you have the rollers roughly in the right position, ship out and see if there is any bounce as the pole leaves the rear roller. If there is you need to move the rollers closer together. This might be the rear one forward or the front one back, but when you get it correct you’ll know as shipping out will be seamless. For anglers worried about transporting two rollers instead of one, there’s the reassurance that all Preston rollers pack down to a compact size into their own bag and are manufactured from lightweight aluminium.

Not only does it have the height adjustable features, it also has the added advantage of being able to alter the angle at which the legs are set, making any type of bankside terrain easy to cope with. The braced tripod assembly locks securely and has drop-down leg extensions which are locked at the required height by quick release clasps. support The OffBox Pole Support has been a huge hit with match anglers. In fact once you have used one you’ll wonder how you ever managed without. Not only can it be used as a rest when feeding, it is brilliant for fishing shallow for carp or when holding a bait still in moving water.

How many times have you been fishing when suddenly the wind whips up and presenting that finely dotted light carp rig in the far bank grass on a commercial becomes mission impossible? The pole starts bouncing about and presentation becomes impossible. That’s when the Pole Support comes into its own. “I have also used mine on powerful rivers when fishing at World Championships level, and on matches on deep UK waterways such as the Gloucester Canal,” says Des Shipp.

“On the Gloucester, the canal can suddenly start to tow. You adjust your pole rig, laying a few extra inches of line on the bottom but to no avail. The Magnetic Hook Box is designed to store loose hooks securely. These boxes are now available in three colours and the magnet is built into the base, so the hooks don’t come into contact with it. Poles Many thought our 2009 pole range could not be beaten, but we’ve taken our unrivalled technology to new heights for 2010, with what we believe to be the most comprehensive Preston Innovations pole range yet. With designs for both home and abroad, using methods used by modern match anglers, the range has been developed to satisfy everyone from England internationals like Des Shipp, who need the very best equipment to keep him at the top, to club anglers wanting quality at a really affordable price. Unlike many companies, at Preston Innovations we actually design our own poles, specifying everything from the taper of the mandrels to the types of carbon used and the range of top kits. We are totally free to choose who we want to make our poles, which enables us to use the very best pole manufacturers in the world. Because the Preston Innovations design team are all accomplished match anglers, we have been able to design poles that are totally suited to fishing for bigger weights, using stronger elastic, to fit in with the modern carp fishing methods most prevalent in matches today. The technical expertise required is just about as advanced as it gets in carbon technology. This is one of the fundamental reasons why Preston Innovations select different manufacturers to make our different pole ranges. It might seem an obvious statement, but our pole design process, like all of our other design processes, really does start at home. For our top of the range poles we use the Italian based company Lerc for manufacture. Our association with them goes back over 13 years and they are one of the few companies we have found that not only have the technical expertise we need, they also listen to what Preston Innovations want. And listening is a very important part of our design process, because that’s where it all starts. It’s what we do continually, to decide what trends to follow and what UK anglers really want from a top of the range pole.

Preston Innovations consultants are continually on the bank, fishing matches on a wide range of venues throughout the country and are always on the lookout for new ideas and requirements. We also have a sales force made up of excellent match anglers. They are in daily contact with hundreds of shops and also report back to me on latest developments. What we hear from my extended team, and what we learn from anglers, helps us to shape the direction Preston Innovations take when designing poles. Ultimately it’s about giving you, the British angler, what you want and what you need. It’s very difficult to satisfy all of the people, all of the time. Some want lighter poles, some stiffer poles and some stronger poles. But we have learnt over the years that there has to be a balance and compromise. Based on the information we get, one of the most important characteristics is high performance and reliability, which is what we want from a pole too. With most match anglers now fishing for carp on match venues, at some time or other, it is essential that poles are built with enough strength to cope with larger elastics. From the reports we hear, you all want strength, stiffness and lightness in one package. Because of our excellent relationship with Lerc, you can be sure that the Preston poles you see in the shops are exclusive to us. We individually design each model and use our own mandrels, which for all mid to upper level poles are a full 16m design, with a continuous taper. Lots of anglers don’t realise that many European poles are made on 13m and 14.5m designed mandrels with parallel extension sections. The result of this is that at 16m the poles can start to droop significantl. We’ve seen some great 13m poles that just don’t cut it at 16m. Preston poles that are sold at 16m are designed to be used up to their full length.

Naturally the large team of consultants we have at Preston Innovations get to have a play with their new toys too and after getting back all of the information, further modifications are made and new samples are ordered. Some of our consultants can be quite unforgiving when playing fish. If they are happy that the poles are strong enough to cope with hard fighting fish, then so are we. If Des Shipp says it’s stiff enough, we’re happy. And if Tommy Pickering gives us a thumbs up, we know we’ve got it about as right as possible. This process goes on for as long as is required. It’s only when we are totally satisfied that everything is as good as it can be, that we will give the okay on production, safe in the knowledge that it will satisfy the requirements of anglers throughout the country.

When we first started producing elastic there was only one type available and it was restricted to a maximum of number 8 we now have no less than five different types all available in the much heavier strains required by the modern match angler. We have no less than three sorts of standard Solid elastics, Flouro and Original Slip which have a colour coding system and the natural creamy coloured latex Solid elastics are ideally suited to most match fishing situations with there controlled stretch its easy to adjust them depending on the requirements of a particular peg be it catching roach on fine number two or playing hard fighting carp. Solid elastics are the first choice of many of our anglers when it comes to choosing a shock absorber for catching bags of small fish and at the other end of the scale many still carry a kit fitted with tight 16 for those days when you really need to boss fish away from snags on heavy gear. Since the popularity of carp fishing anglers have been looking for an edge to help them land fish quicker, when Hollow elastics came along they soon caught on to the fact that the increased stretch offered allowed them to fish small hooks with less danger of pulling out, but these soft elastics presented a new problem.

In some instances they where too soft this is when the advent of the pulla kit / bung changed the way many anglers fished small hooks and light elastics could be used allowing fish to make there initial runs with the benefit light elastics and the when fish are ready to be netted allowing the tightening of the elastic making netting fish on a top kit easy. Des Shipp explains the advantages of doubled elastic, “To get the best of both world anglers have now started to double up light solid elastics such as 4 and 5 this gives the benefits of soft set elastic for the fishes initial run but steadily increases the pressure as the hooked fish runs, I suppose you could say a doubled 4 would give you an 8 although this is not strictly true as the way in which the pressure is applied is different and seams to subdue fish more quickly.” Previously threading double elastic had been its main draw back but the addition of Preston Double Elastic makes threading this type of set up as simple as using any single strand elastic just thread it normally and then separate to give you double elastic but with out the associated headaches. We like to think that by giving such a wide range of elastics there is something to suit every situation you are likely to encounter.

To play carp correctly, with large diameter elastics over size 10, or Hollo, you need to cut your pole tip back (sometimes quite a lot) or remove the number 1 section completely. Whichever you choose to do you must make sure the tip doesn’t bend too much. If it does the elastic will stick to the inside of the top section and not work properly. How far you cut back the tip may determine which type of bush you can fit. If you cut it back a long way to make it ultra stiff, the internal diameter of the tip may be too large to fit a standard internal bush. In this case use an XLarge Internal Bush or a Slip Stretch external bush. Many top anglers remove the number one section and fit an internal or external Stretch Slip Bush straight onto their number 2 section. This produces an ultra stiff tip and guarantees smooth elastic performance.

Elasticating a Top Kit

The Pulla Bung needs to fit closely to the end of the section so that the tube sticks out. First push it in as far as it will go.

Here’s how to elasticate your top kit using an internal bush and Stora Bung.

Fitting a Pulla bung Fitting a Pulla Bung is simple and easy to do. In fact if you normally elasticate your top kits you’ll be able to fit a Pulla Bung. Cut back your pole tip to match the size of the bush using a fine tooth blade. Use sandpaper to remove any sharp edges.

Tie on your connector using an overhand loop. First thread the elastic through the sleeve and the hole in the connector...

Push the uncut bung into the end of your section. Mark and cut two ribs smaller.

... double over the elastic and tie the overhand loop. Moisten the elastic and gently tighten the knot down to the connector.

The Preston Pulla Bung is a brilliant way of landing hard-fighting fish more quickly than on a conventional elastic set-up. This is especially true for bonus fish that are bigger than expected. The first thing to say is that you still play the fish as you would normally, it’s only when you unship your top kit that the Pulla Bung really comes into play. From that moment on, you have the option of increasing the tension on the elastic by pulling some of it through the bung and holding it in the fingers of the hand holding the pole. By pulling some of the elastic through the bung you shorten the length of elastic still in the top kit. This reduces the distance the fish can swim away from you and makes netting much easier. But it isn’t just playing bonus fish quickly that makes the Pulla Bung so useful. You can also

reduce the strength of your elastic slightly, or set it with less tension, which leads to less bumped fish, especially when fishing up in the water. Most of Preston’s consultants reduce the strength of their elastic by one size. Instead of a number 12 solid elastic they use a number 10. For Hollo instead of a size 13 they reduce the elastic to a size 11.

Great For Hollo The Pulla Bung is also brilliant for Hollo elastics because they are usually more easily stretched and being able to shorten the amount available beats fish really quickly. Still not convinced? The next time you hook a bigger than expected fish and are trying to net it on a top 4 or 5, think about how easy it would be if you had a top 2 in your hand with less elastic stretching out!

Keep your nail on the bung and take it out. Mark where this is. It is important that you are accurate.

Cut through the bung one rib bigger than you think you need. You can then trim one rib at a time to achieve a perfect fit.

Attach your connector to the other end of the elastic (see page 58) and thread the elastic through the top kit and Pulla Bung.

Thread the elastic through the base sleeve and tie a knot. If you need more tension push the sleeve up and tie another knot.

Thread the elastic through your top kit and attach to a Stora bung. Wind some additional elastic on the winder to enable you to adjust the tension later on.

Check that the bush fits snugly and then smear a small amount of Araldite onto the outside of the bush and push in.

The Carbonactive C Series was designed for commercial match waters where fish-playing power is required. The iconic Carbonactive action is used to its maximum effect in the C Series, allowing you to play fish hard whilst building up big weights. For anglers who already use the Mini Series 10’ Carp, you’ll find the 11’ and 12’ C Series Feeder models the perfect complement for fishing further out. As the C Series Feeder rods have relatively soft tips, they can cast small feeders easily, as the tip section is quite easy to compress (something that stiffer feeder rods don’t do well). “The action of these rods makes it far easier to land fish quickly and the very forgiving action helps to subdue carp when they are under your feet, reducing the amount of hook-pulls,” adds Andy. At the start of the current pellet waggler revolution, our consultants quickly realised that traditional 13ft waggler rods had limitations when casting accurately close to islands on commercial fisheries. A new type of rod was needed for accurate short casting and the Mini Series was developed. We use golf as an example of why shorter rods are more accurate. Typically, different clubs are used to hit the ball different distances and to different degrees of accuracy. The shorter the club, the shorter the distance, and the more accurate the shot.

This is the same for fishing rods. Feeder rods of 12’ and float rods of 13’ needed to be scaled down to increase the accuracy. Additionally this gives you other benefits. It’s easier to cast in tight swims and netting fish nearer to the bank, because of the shorter length, reduces playing time. Preston Innovations were the first company to recognise this trend and launched the Mini Series to fulfil a modern angling situation, something top match carp ace and experienced hand Steve Saunders says has been a Godsend for commercial match fishing. “The Mini Series offers more casting accuracy on small and medium waters where fishing tight to features is important,” he explains. “The shorter lengths and exclusive Carbonactive non-lock action combine together perfectly to offer just about the ultimate fish-playing action. ■■Dutch Master 11’ 8” Feeder Designed primarily for the Dutch market, with the input from consultant Arnout Van De Stat, one of the best long range feeder anglers in Holland. His input on what was required has provided Preston Innovations with a unique range of distance feeder rods that we believe are second to none in Europe. Strangely, these rods were designed from the tip back towards the butt. We first developed the correct tips, which is very important when distance casting and as you can see from the range there are different versions of tips that fit the extreme, long and medium range rods. These tips are vital in the design of each model and make the rods perform correctly in terms of distance and bite detection. Again, we have stuck to our principles of using the correct components for the job and kept a perfect fish-playing action. “When you need to go to extreme lengths to catch, you need a rod that will get you there,” smiles Arnout. “I wanted a rod that could outcast my rivals and help me land more fish. That’s where

the Dutch Master Series comes into its own.” As the name suggests the Dutch Master Series was developed for the Dutch long range feeder market where anglers often have to cast 100 metres or more when fishing for bream. On some flowing waters, not only is distance important but also the ability to cast big feeders with extra lead to hold bottom is also important. Although designed as long range rods, this doesn’t mean the Dutch Master models are just stiff casting machines. By carefully blending different carbons we have created rods with proper actions suitable for fishing with small hooks and light hooklengths. Admittedly this range doesn’t have the same shock absorbing qualities as the Excel Series (especially in the longer/heavier versions), but it still makes best use of the Carbonactive action and in use there is more than enough action in the tip section to safely play bream and carp on stillwaters and chub and barbel on rivers. “Some anglers may be put off by the name, thinking these rods aren’t suitable for the UK,” Arnout clarifies. “If you want a rod for bream fishing, you’ll

not be disappointed by either the 11’ 8” or the 12’ 8”. Both cast medium to long distances with medium groundbait feeders and have actions more suited to the UK style of bream fishing.” The Dutch Masters have low profile, large diameter guides suitable for braid. The large diameter and also the careful spacing of the guides reduces line friction, which increases casting performance. The carbon tips also have large internal diameter guides that are better than normal guides when using shock leaders as they allow smooth passage of knots. One feature often overlooked is the spigoted joints. This keeps blank diameter down and reduces wind resistance when casting, which, in turn, improves distance. “If you want a rod to go the distance on stillwaters or cast large feeders on rivers, I have no hesitation in recommending the Dutch Master Series,” says Arnout. “These rods will get you casting further than you ever have before and enable you to out distance anglers around you when it matters most.”

Feeder Rods now make up a huge part of UK fishing on commercial venues. But how do you choose the right rod for your fishing? We spoke to England International Des Shipp to find out more about the types of things he looks for in his feeder fishing, to help you make the best choice. "Traditionally, a properly designed feeder rod will be reasonably stiff for up to two thirds of its length. This is so that the rod can be used to proper a heavy weight accurately, but retain a generous amount of flexibility in the upper top section that continues into the quivertip itself for sensitivity.

Larford and Barston lakes, which are larger type commercial fisheries. “For this type of rod use and taking into account the big weights needed to win, I thought it important that it came with the same guides and tips that you associate with carp feeder rods,” says Des. “This rod is also a superb river feeder rod for maggot or groundbait feeders. “The 12ft Super Feeder is a completely different rod and one with finesse. It’s okay for carp, but ideally suited to bream fishing and casting open end feeders. Fine carbon tips for sensitive bite indication, but with enough power in the lower blank to cast 50 metres is the perfect combination for bream anglers nationwide.” Dutch Masters and Competition rods don’t feature prominently in Des’s own fishing, but he does think these rods have a place in the UK angler’s armoury, especially on big reservoirs and rivers. “The tips is these rods are vital in the design of each model and make the rods perform correctly in terms of distance and bite detection,” Des explains. “For fishing across big rivers, or chucking into deep water reservoirs, they are ideal.” So there you have it, from one of the UK’s most talented match anglers. Match the feeder rod to the fish you’re fishing for, and the water you’re fishing and you won’t go far wrong.

"These days, however, there is more of a need for a through-actioned feeder rod on certain types of venues, and I believe Preston Innovations have got it exactly right in their range, providing a feeder rod for every circumstance." Indeed, Des believes you should base your feeder rod choice around how you want to fish with the rod, which is just as important as considering the fish you intend on targeting. "Think about the technique your employing. Are you Method feeder fishing? Using the Pellet Feeder? Or fishing for sensitive bites on a Quickload maggot feeder?" he asks. "You also need to take into account the range being fished, or the features being fished to. "The choice has to be weighed between the type of fishing you're doing and the species - and size of that species - you hope to catch." And Des points at the Mini series of rods as a great case in point, providing a totally new style of rod designed to meet the needs of modern match angling on smaller commercial venues. "Bigger feeder rods were a nightmare on smaller

lakes, where much of the fishing is short range, casting tight to islands, reeds or far margins," he tells us. "Rods of 12ft and 13ft needed to be scaled down to increase the accuracy. Additionally this gives you other benefits. It’s easier to cast in tight swims and netting fish nearer to the bank, because of the shorter length, reduces playing time. "Preston Innovations were the first company to recognise this trend and launched the Mini Series based around a problem us match anglers were facing all the time. Now, I wouldn't go anywhere without my Mini feeder rod. I land almost all my fish now, because the action runs throughout the blank, reducing hookpulls." More rods boasting such qualities are the C Series rods, which provide power where it’s needed for commercial carp fishing. “Both feeder rods are perfect bagging rods for carp with non-lock, through-actioned blanks and the correct guides and tips to withstand catching lots of carp,” smiles Des. “The action of these rods makes it far easier to land fish quickly and the very forgiving action helps to subdue carp when they are under your feet.” In the Excel range, meanwhile, there are two distinct feeder rods, both designed with the heavy influence of our consultants. The 12ft 6ins Feeder design had a lot of input from Des Shipp. He wanted a rod for Method feeder fishing at distances of 40-60 metres on venues like

Oval shaped bodies are the most versatile shape and can be used in lots of different conditions. They are very stable and can be held still in medium and fast flows, lifted to work the bait and turn around the body when fishing on-the-drop.

Very stable floats for stillwater and slow moving water fishing, especially in rough conditions. Depending on the size of tip and body taper this shape of float can be used for fine bloodworm fishing or for carp fishing on-the-deck.

Reel Lines If you already use Direct Mono you’ll notice that the packaging has changed and so has the spool size. You now get 150m on each spool instead of 100m. Direct Mono is a low stretch mono (up to 50% less than some mono lines) which shows up bites better and is more direct on the strike. It isn’t as instant as braid and when playing fish you won’t notice much difference between normal mono and direct mono. It is a tough line too (which makes it good for feeder fishing) and doesn’t require any special knots.

The out-turned eye of the PR36 has been developed to improve hooking performance when using hair-rigs, the knotless knot and small hooks (size 10 and smaller). The knotless knot is the easiest way to make a hair-rig and it produces an angle at the eye of the hook that can improve hooking performance, especially on larger hooks. But when the knot is used on smaller hooks with a straight eye, the angle is too great and this can actually impair hooking efficiency. The point of the straight-eyed carp hook is almost at 90° to the angle of pull whereas the point of the PR36 is more in-line with the angle of pull. This is because the PR36 has a slightly out-turned eye. In fishing situations this means that when a fish picks up the bait and moves off the point is more exposed and more likely to prick the fish. Once this happens the fish bolts, or you strike, and the hook penetrates immediately.

Barbless Hair Rigs are perfect for presenting a wide variety of baits. Here’s how to mount a soft pellet.

■■STRONG & xtra STRONG CARP■ BARBLESS hooks to nylon Expertly tied straight from the packet, the hair is the correct length for a wide variety of baits.

Push a baiting needle through the pellet ready to mount on the hair. You can use the same method for boilies and sweetcorn.

Hook the baiting needle onto the loop of the hair and pull through moving the bait onto the hair.

Remove the baiting needle and insert a bait stop into hair loop. Use a bait stop that’s either clear or the same colour as the bait.

Gently ease the pellet down the hair until it sits on the bait stop. This will prevent the stop falling out on the cast.

With the increasing size of the average carp in commercial fisheries, we have recognised the need for some seriously strong hooklengths. The Strong and Xtra Strong patterns use high quality hooks, suited to the range of baits used on commercial fisheries and a tough reliable hooklength line.

master When it comes to finding the best modern approach for commercial carp fishing, you need look no further than inside the mind of match ace Andy Findlay. He’s the man to thank for numerous modern match fishing techniques, including the revolutionary Pellet Feeder launched by Preston Innovations in 2007. This clever idea was based around a real Heath Robinson affair Andy created at home, to suit his needs on commercial carp venues in the UK. The idea was to present the hookbait pellet right in the centre of his feed pellets, rather than away from the feeder like when open-end feeder fishing. The Pellet Feeder has benefits over the Method feeder, too, as the hooklink cannot spring away from the feed once disturbed. “Carp love pellets,” smiles Andy, “but sometimes the Method isn’t the best approach to catch them, especially on waters where it is overused. “Sometimes the carp attack the feeder quite aggressively, so it’s important that your hookbait is sat, right amongst the feed, so you get quicker bites. “In a match situation, you want to get as many fish on the bank as possible in the shortest period of time. The Pellet Feeder allows you to do this better than anything else. “The new 2010 Preston Innovations Pellet Feeders are really easy to load,” he adds. “And your hooklink exits right from the centre of these in-line feeders, leaving your

hookbait exactly where you need it.” But it’s not just a case of loading in some presoaked pellets and casting it out anywhere. According to Andy, this is an approach where it really pays to be accurate. “When fishing the Pellet Feeder, the golden rules are to utilise your reel’s line clip, be accurate, and leave the feeder where it hits bottom so that it can do its work,” he explains. “I always leave the line from the quivertip to the Pellet Feeder slack. This way you can see your line bites, watching the line between the tip and the water surface, without the tip moving. “If the line was tight and a fish bumped into the line, it could move your feeder and hookbait away from the pile of pellets, which is defeating the object of the exercise. “When you get a proper bite you know about it! The tip pulls round, stays there and you simply pick up the rod because the fish is on.” Watching Andy is action with the Pellet Feeder is like poetry in motion, hitting the same spot every time, waiting for the tip to go around with a hungry carp on the end. If bites do dry up, he’ll try a different hookbait to ensure he’s maximizing his swim. “Sometimes you can tweak the length of the short hooklink to get more takes, but other times changing from a hard pellet to a soft hooker pellet can be better, or even a lump of punched luncheon meat,” says Andy. “With the Fin Feed pellets bursting from the feeder though, it often doesn’t matter what’s on the end!”

Leave them underwater for one minute for each millimetre the pellet is — so two minutes for 2mm, four minutes for 4mm and so on. After soaking, drain off all the water give them a shake and leave for 10 minutes, they are then perfect for putting in a pellet feeder or around a Method feeder.
