Local school to become base for Paralympians Valence School, near Westerham, has been chosen to become a training base for future Paralympians. Sport England recently announced a grant of £352,881 to the Wheelchair Football Association which hopes to get Paralympic recognition for the sport in time for the 2020 games. Jo Eames, Director of Sport at Valence School, said: “This is hugely exciting news for us and shows the high regard in which we are held as a sports college for disabled students.” The school has also just launched a £4.5m appeal to build a new indoor swimming pool and sports hall.

Compiled by more than 100 contributors, the Sevenoaks Historical Dictionary was officially launched at a party held at St Nicholas Undercroft. The dictionary showcases an illustrated history, presented in alphabetical order, of how the town has developed over the years and includes paintings, photographs and maps. At the launch party, the book’s editors, Dr David Killingray and Elizabeth Purves, were delighted to be able to tell guests of the event that more than 700 copies had already been sold to the eager Sevenoaks public. n The book is available at www.sevenoaksbookshop.co.uk

Madagascar talk this month

Bupa’s Memory Share Week

Students' road safety course

Another Oak for Sevenoaks

A talk discussing Madagascar and its wildlife will take place later this month. The event, presented by Kent Wildlife Trust, will be hosted by Bob Francis and will take place on Wednesday 16 January at 7.30pm. To book your place, call 07910 506996 or email davidwnimmo@ tiscali.co.uk. Light refreshments are provided and donations are greatly appreciated.

Sevenoaks school students joined residents from Pinehurst House Nursing home as part of Bupa's Memory Share Week. The afternoon consisted of reminiscence about their childhood and family memories. The session gave both residents and students the opportunity to play a range of fun games and share happy memories from their past, including Morris Miner cars, marbles and hop scotch.

Sevenoaks firefighters held a hard-hitting road safety lesson for local school students to highlight the dangers of careless driving. The session, which took place at Knole Academy, saw firefighters re-enact the aftermath of a serious car collision. The aim of the lesson was to encourage young drivers to take responsibility for their own and other road users’ safety ahead of learning to drive.

A new oak tree has been planted by Sevenoaks mayor, Richard Parry at Brittains Common. The tree is the fourth to be planted in a plan that aims to deposit a new oak tree each year until there are seven, the trees will represent the original historic seven oaks that gave the town its name. The new trees will be a landmark to the town, reminding visitors that they are entering Sevenoaks.

Tonbridge Loyalty Card scheme launches The Tonbridge Town Team, made up of residents, business people and councillors are hoping that a new loyalty card scheme will boost their high street. The team are considering a simple stamp card or an electronic swipe card which allows users to build points, in a bid to offer local shoppers an incentive to spend their money in the town. The scheme has been thriving in other towns and the team hope Tonbridge will have the same success. The card will be launched in the spring. n For any further information or to register your interest, email tonbridgebusiness@yahoo.co.uk

Happy holidays in Kent Despite the rain this summer, visitors have awarded Kent top marks. Visit Kent research has revealed that 95 per cent of visitors to the county this summer rated their holiday or day-trip as excellent or good. Sixty-two per cent said their main reason for visiting was for leisure or a holiday visit but just seven per cent were visiting for the Olympics. The remarkable statistics continued as 90 per cent claimed they are likely to return and 87 percent said they received a positive welcome. n Visit www.visitkent.co.uk for more information

Kent farm wins prestigious award

Local school pupil set for stardom A talented student from Wrotham School is following in the footsteps of superstars Amy Winehouse and Adele by securing a place at the prestigious BRIT School in Croydon. Jack Higham, aged 17 from Sevenoaks, has been playing the guitar for five years and has a passion for song-writing; he is studying a two-year course alongside just 48 other talented musicians. Some of the BRIT School’s famous former pupils include Leona Lewis, Katie Melua and Kate Nash, as well as members of The Feeling, The Kooks and Noisettes.

Darent Valley-based Castle Farm has been recognised as a leader in its field at the prestigious Farm Business Awards 2012, winning Rural Enterprise of the Year. The honour is in recognition of the farm’s environmental credentials and its victorious diversification into everything from dried flowers to aromatherapy events. William Alexander, the driving force behind the farm, said: “It’s a real honour to be recognised for an award because it reflects the hard work and dedication of everyone involved with the business.”

Local filmmaker shortlisted for competition A filmmaker from West Kingsdown has been shortlisted in the top 20 of an international filmmaking competition. The competition could see him win a £25,000 production budget for his short film, The Last River as well as a trip to Hollywood to meet industry professionals. Kevin Andrews created a two-minute trailer for his film which he shot in and around his home; the trailer was based around the biblical story of Moses in the basket. He said he was pleased to have got to this stage.

Nurseries receive award

Students raise £1,000

This winter at Churchill’s former home in Chartwell, Westerham, a unique exhibition of objects from the great political leader’s life have been unveiled, giving an insight into his fascinating ancestry. There are 50 objects on display that have never been seen before, including duelling pistols and a portrait of his grandmother. The exhibition is open until the end of February and tickets cost £6.50.

Kent will be celebrating its tourism, facilities and leisure attractions at My Kent Big Weekend 2013. The website for ballot applications is open from 28 January – 18 February and the event will take place from the 23-24 March. There will be thousands of free tickets up for grabs for residents (two per household) to enjoy a day out. Visit www. mykentbigweekend. co.uk for more info.

Lady Boswell’s Primary School in Sevenoaks has taken a proud place in this year's Sunday Times top 400 state primary and prep schools in the country. The school has jumped a huge 102 places from their position in last year's list and is now number 222 of 400. The school is one of only three state schools in Kent to be featured in the list. The news ties in with the school's plan for a new extension in the new year.

Nurseries and preschools across Kent have been awarded or re-accredited the Kent Quality Mark. Sevenoaks nurseries received the award for their refreshing approaches to teaching, including allowing children to serve breakfast and dig in the mud. The award permits the schools to evaluate their existing techniques and make improvements to the childrens' future education experience.

A group of young students from Sevenoaks School participated in a sponsored swim in a bid to raise money to help their disabled peers. The students successfully raised £1,000 for Valence School in Westerham. The school, an education centre for youngsters with disabilities and medical needs, requires £4.5 million to rebuild its school and sports hall to accommodate its growing population.

Really happy! Lake Placid is a tough track so I would have been pleased with a top 12 result. Third place meant that I receive lottery funding for a year allowing me to train full-time throughout the summer and be in the best shape for the 2014 Winter Olympics. What’s next for you in the upcoming months? I’m competing on this year’s World Cup circuit at the moment which has nine races over North America and Europe. After four races I’m currently ranked 2nd in the world and have finished on the podium three times. The World Championships in Switzerland are at the end of January, as well as the World Cup circuit finishing at the 2014 Olympic track in Sochi in February. What is your long-term goal?

NEWS from

the MP with Michael Fallon MP

For Britain, 2012 was a fantastic year: the Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics gave us memories to treasure for a lifetime – who could forget the parachuting Queen or the triple gold Saturday of the Olympics? It reinforced our sense of national self-confidence and gave us a clearer idea of what it means to be British in the 21st Century. Yet, there’s no denying that 2012 was a tough year for families and for business. The economy grew slower than anyone could have forecast and the problems in the Eurozone will go on hitting our exports in 2013. However, the signs are pointing in the right direction, unemployment has fallen again in Sevenoaks, as well as elsewhere. It’s obviously a tragedy for anybody who can’t find work or loses their job; there are just under 1,000 people registered out of work

in Sevenoaks, but that’s 120 fewer than this time last year and means unemployment is only 2.2 per cent here, well below the national average of 7.8 per cent. The government is doing everything it can to help hard-pressed families. We’ve kept interest rates low, which helps keep mortgage payments down. We’ve stopped the fuel duty hike and frozen council tax for another year. And we’re sticking to the long-term task of putting our public finances in order, to avoid Britain ending up like countries such as Greece. I should like to take this chance to wish all my constituents a very Happy New Year. Have a question for the MP? Please send to editor@vinedigital.co.uk

I always aim to be the best at whatever I am doing, you should never limit yourself to what you are able to achieve and always have fun! What made you want to take up a career in skeleton bob sporting? I applied for the Girls4Gold talent search in 2008 and was selected for skeleton, I haven’t looked back since. I was an athlete from a young age taking part in all sports and skeleton seemed to be the one for me. If you weren’t doing this, what do you think you’d be doing? I’ve got a degree in geography, sport and exercise science and I’m interested in green and renewable energy, so a job working somewhere along those lines is my next goal. n Visit www.lizzyyarnold.com to find out more about Lizzy

COMMUNITY STARs Julie Delamare Julie Delamare from Otford organised a fundraising weekend as a way of saying thank you to the charities who helped her young daughter Amelia battle with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. Three months of hard work went into organising the hugely successful, ‘Beat Cancer Fun Day’. As well as rides, cakes, face-painting and inflatables, there was live music, dancing and even an appearance from special guest, The Stig #2. Julie’s amazing spirit and dedication brought the whole community together to help make the event a success. The next day, Julie’s partner Jonathan did a 50-mile sponsored bike ride through the New Forest, bringing the total money raised to £10,000 – in just one weekend! All money raised was divided between Great Ormond Street Hospital, Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research and local charity EllenorLions ‘chYps’ hospice which provided home hospice care for Amelia. Julie says, “We hold these charities very dear in our hearts, especially chYps who provided crucial home hospice care for Amelia. We really can’t thank them enough.” To find out more about the day go to www.beatcancerfunday.webs.com and if you would like to donate to the charities visit www.chyps.org.uk, www. leukaemialymphomaresearch.org.uk and www.gosh.org

Sevenoaks Chemist removed 100% of Limescale for good! Hard water was always a problem for people of Sevenoaks, read how this local family removed it from their homes for good!

CASE STUDY: PHILIP AND MARGRET YOUNG

P

hillip Young and his wife Margret could not believe the damage limescale build up was causing their appliances and the effect it was having to a recently refurbished bathroom. The shower head, shower door and even the taps had a constant layer of scum on them from the continuous build up, which was tedious and expensive to clean. They regularly faced problems with appliances and heating pumps breaking down and despite trying numerous ways to try and stop the scale build up in their home, including regularly changing hot water pumps and even completely changing the whole heating system, there was no change to the water quality. After seeing the EWT system advertised at half-price, they decided to give them a call and found that the fantastic team at EWT could effectively answer all their questions. With this, they decided to arrange an installation date. They found that the transition to the EWT system was easy and seamless – the engineer had the unit installed in less than two hours and even cleaned up after himself. Within three days, Phillip and Margret had limescale-free water throughout their home. The water softener broke down the old limescale build up in their existing hot water tank, shower and kettle making them perform as good as new within weeks. Now their washing machine and shower are completely limefree and there is no more limescale scum on their taps or shower doors. Phillip adds, “I used to clean the wash basin every Saturday and by Monday it was dull again, now I give it a quick wipe once a week and it stays shiny! I really couldn’t believe the difference it made in such a short time!” With the new EWT system, showering is a dream; Philip and Margret both noticed how much easier products lathered and Margret even commented that her hair felt cleaner and softer. Perhaps the biggest benefit for the couple though, is the safe knowledge that their boiler is not going to clog up with limescale and that their appliances are being protected, thus saving Philip and Margret money too. As part of the offer, they also received a free drinking water system, which meant they could drink good quality drinking water straight from the tap. Philip and Margret are delighted with their switch to the EWT system and continue to reap the benefits daily. “Needless to say, we instantly referred our next door neighbours!” n For more information or to rid your home of limescale visit www.ewtechnologies.co.uk or call EWT 02033840204

LEGAL MATTERS The team at Warners Solicitors offer regular expert advice on topics relevant to our everyday lives. This month, Alice Scambler discusses family difficulties

I

n April 2013 new changes will come into effect resulting in the removal of public funding for many people who are currently eligible to receive help with payment of their legal fees. Those people who are no longer eligible but who need a divorce or help to resolve a financial dispute arising from family breakdown or assistance from the Court to make arrangements for their children or grandchildren’s care will, from April 2013, be required to either pay solicitors themselves or attend Court without legal representation. These changes have widereaching implications, not just for those who would have been eligible for public funding. It is envisaged that the withdrawal of Legal Aid will lead to increasing numbers of self-representing parties who will require significant Court assistance negotiating their way around the family law system. This will inevitably lead to greater delays in finalising disputes and may well create further unfairness for those represented by solicitors who could well see increases in their costs. The justification for the 2013 cut-backs, along with the all too familiar need to cut back generally on public spending, is that the Government is keen to encourage families to settle

their disputes outside of court. Greater emphasis is being placed on alternative options such as Mediation, a service considered by many to be a much cheaper and quicker alternative to Court action. In the alternative, Collaborative law is an approach that provides separating couples with a face-to-face forum where they can each obtain legal advice and support from their own lawyer. This dignified, transparent and co-operative approach can help reduce acrimony and costs and will often assist parental relations going forward. The common factor with both Mediation and Collaboration is that the parties themselves control the process, not the lawyers or the Court. The aim is for a settlement to be reached which is acceptable to both parties and in the interests of the family as a whole. This also avoids the daunting prospect of a final outcome being imposed by a Judge, who may have only met the parties once. Anyone wishing to resolve a family-related dispute would therefore be well advised to act before these cutbacks apply and should, in any event, consider the alternative resolution options referred to within this article. n To find out more, please call 01732 747900 or email family@warnerssolicitors.co.uk to arrange a FREE no obligation initial consultation. 400g can chickpeas, rinsed and drained

5 tbsp plain flour, seasoned with salt and pepper

200g couscous

2 tbsp redcurrant jelly (or rowan or hawthorn jelly)

Tip in the garlic and fry for a further min, then set aside. 2) Put the venison into a plastic bag with seasoned flour and shake to coat. Add a little more oil and butter to the pan, then fry the venison over a high heat, stirring now and then, until well browned. Don’t crowd the pan – cook in batches if necessary. Set aside with the vegetables. 3) Add the redcurrant jelly and wine to the pan, and bring to the boil, scraping up all the bits that have stuck to the bottom. Pour in the stock, then add the thyme, bay leaf, meat and vegetables. Season if you like and bring to the boil. Cover and transfer to the oven for about 1½ hrs or until tender. Remove from the oven and check the seasoning.

Bring to the boil. 2) Reduce the heat, cover, then simmer for 20 mins until the pumpkin is tender. After 10 mins, stir in the chickpeas. (If the mixture is a little thick, you can loosen it with some vegetable stock.) 3) Meanwhile, tip the couscous, stock granules and lemon zest into a heatproof bowl. Pour over 300ml boiling water, stir briefly and cover with a plate. Leave for 5 mins. Tip in the lemon juice, almonds and remaining tbsp oil and fluff up with a fork. Scatter the coriander over the tagine and serve with the couscous.

new you New Year,

Look to the new year and a new you with Vine as we bring you the best local businesses to make 2013 a healthy, happy one for you and your family

Vine’ s New Year’s Resolutions Vine’s New Year’ s Resolutions Be Active

Although not particularly imaginative, this is arguably the most important resolution you can make this year and it is the single best thing you can do for your health. Regular exercise reduces strokes, wards off heart attacks and acts as a natural anti-depressant to improve your mood. Yes, you could join a gym but don’t forget there are other options available – get the whole family involved and go for a walk or take up a team sport as a great way to make new friends in your local community. Adults should aim to be active for at least 2.5 hours a week

Eat Healthily

Whether or not you are trying to shift that festive bulge, it is always a good idea to eat a healthy, balanced diet. Swap to wholegrain bread, rice and pasta, eat oily fish such as salmon, tuna, sardines and mackerel and eat plenty of fruit and vegetables. Cut back on salt by avoiding processed food and drink lots of water to help cleanse your colon and protect your joints and organs. If you are aiming to lose weight, avoid short-term fad diets. Instead think long-term, decrease the size of your portions and avoid snacking in between meals.

Give Up Your Vices (but keep some)

Heavy drinking and smoking are two vices you should always aim to kick. Drinking alcohol in excess can increase the risk of liver and heart disease as well as contribute to depression and memory loss. And although smoking is one of the hardest habits to give up, there are now plenty of resources to help. Visit Smokefree.nhs.uk for tips and links to local stop smoking services. However, it’s not all bad news – studies show that a little wine, coffee and tea doesn’t hurt and can even be good for you!

26 vine January 2013 vinedigital.co.uk

Get More Sleep

Sleep is a necessity, not a luxury – it does wonders for your mood and appearance, is crucial for strengthening memories and primes the immune system. What better excuse is there to catch 40 winks? Although the amount we need varies from person to person and from day to day, it is recommended that you get between seven to nine hours a night. The right amount is when you wake up feeling well rested without getting tired during the day.

Reduce Stress

Unfortunately, stress is an unavoidable part of daily life. A little can be good for you, giving you an energy boost, but too much can make you vulnerable to physical ill-health and increase your risk of insomnia, depression, obesity and heart disease. Exercise is a great stress reliever but there are alternatives such as drinking chamomile tea and socialising; even a cuddle from a loved one or pet can help lower blood pressure and decrease stress hormones! If you find yourself getting hot under the collar, take a time out, find a quiet place to sit or lie down and breathe deeply to calm yourself down. n For more articles covering this subject, why not check out past issues of Vine online at www.vinedigital.co.uk

BODY SHOP Answering your exercise dilemmas

Q: Every year I start out with good intentions but struggle with my New Year’s resolutions. Any tips? A: It is the time of year when, with comfortably full bellies and a host of new possessions yet to find a home, bold sentiments are starting to form. This is particularly true when it comes to new diet regimes and weight loss plans. The difficulty in sticking to your plans seems to stem from our relationship with food. Here in the UK we are highly fortunate in that we have pretty much complete jurisdiction in terms of what, when and how much we eat. This situation, unsurprisingly, does appear to have a dark side. More and more individuals are finding they have a relationship with food which extends beyond the enjoyment of how it tastes and its role in providing nutrition for a healthy mind and body. As a relationship, it manifests itself as unnecessary eating; that is to say, an urge to eat outside of meal times which is not driven by the sensation of hunger. Picking a new year’s resolution is fairly straightforward. A classic, for example, is the old ‘next year I will lose ten pounds’ decision. Hands up how many of you made that decision this time last year. Keep your hands in the air if you stuck to that decision and reflected the decision in your behaviour. See what I mean? As it turns out, acting on decisions, however brilliant they may be, is a different story entirely. For those of you planning to kick start next year with a new diet regime, there are things you can do to make it much more likely that you will move forward, rather than turning in circles with the seasons. Here are some tips for how you can prepare yourself for success.

1) Write it down Find a calm, quiet point in your day when you can identify specifically what it is you want to achieve and write it down. By writing your goals down in advance, you can reflect over the course of a few days and ensure your goal isn’t whimsical or unrealistic but one you value and are ready to strive towards. 2) Prepare for the journey Before you start, you need to think about what the implications of your decision are going to be. A lack of preparation results in poor food choices throughout the day. Take an hour on a Sunday to prepare and plan your meals for the week. 3) Turn negatives into positives Try not to build your entire resolution around giving something up. Instead, try to focus on acquiring something, such as a new level of fitness or strength through regular training. This will not only help to maintain your fat loss but will dramatically improve your mood and subsequently your motivation to achieve your original goal. n For more advice give us a call on 01732 451979 or drop by today for a free consultation on setting New Year’s resolutions.

NEW YEAR, NEW YOU

Cleanse, Tone and Strengthen Favoured by new-age celebrities, colonic hydrotherapy is the ultimate detox. It will leave you feeling lighter, healthier, more energised and can even aid weight loss

T

here is an old saying that goes, ‘death begins in the colon’. Although an over-simplification, the road to health begins with intestinal cleansing and detoxification, regardless of the disease or problem. Detoxing isn’t just hype – with the amount of pollution and pesticides that we have in our environment today, it’s absolutely essential that we try to detoxify our lives occasionally. A clean and healthy body is essential for nutrient transfer, waste processing, metabolic functions, toxic drainage and boosting your immune system. So why do we need to detox? Think of the body like a car, just like a vehicle our body undergoes wear and tear. Every now and then your car will need a light fixed, an oil change or an MOT to ensure that it continues to run efficiently and safely. The same principle goes for our body – we need to detoxify in order for it to function properly. If you can answer ‘yes’ to the following, maybe the New Year is a good time to assess your health:

I visited Jackie at Solar Health for three sessions of colonic hydrotherapy. Since the treatments I have felt increased energy levels and have noticed that I am not experiencing that ‘afternoon slump’. It has also boosted my desire to be and feel well

• Do you eat processed foods? • Is sugar a regular part of your diet? • Do you drink alcohol regularly? • Do you eat fruit only occasionally? • Do you drink unfiltered tap water? • Do you regularly drink coffee or fizzy drinks? • Do you get bloated? • Do you have acid reflux? • Do you feel stressed, anxious or worried? • Do you spend more than an hour a day on the computer or mobile phone? Solar Health Clinic is offering a seven-day detox package in January, consisting of ‘before and after’ Live Blood Analysis and two colonics during the seven days of the detox.

Let Vine help you turn your house into a dream home in 2013 with our definitive guide to the cream of trusted, local, home improvement services

Home Improvement Dos and Don’ts Don’t Ignore Safety It’s obvious how dangerous a work site can be – ensure that the working environment is safe for people who need to work or pass through it and that all correct safety equipment is provided and used. Clear the area of dangerous obstructions and ensure that all power supplies, either existing or new, are safe and adequately marked to save you and your project from disaster.

Don’t Rush Make sure your renovation plans are well thought out, that everything is measured accurately to ensure you buy the right amount of materials and your project is not slowed by multiple trips to get additional supplies. Always take the time and effort to do any necessary groundwork first, for example prepping before you paint and laying down sub floor under laminate flooring, to ensure you create a home to last.

Do Be Prepared to Pay Having a strict budget doesn’t mean cutting corners and while it is always a good idea to keep a shrewd eye on costs, make sure you never compromise on crucial elements like electrics, plumbing and heating or building regulations. To help you make choices that you’ll be happy to live with for years, it may even be worth hiring a local architect or interior designer for expert advice.

Do Get Necessary Building Permits The last thing anyone wants is to spend time and effort and money building an extension/ loft conversion/ conservatory only to find out it has to be taken down because there was no permit. To avoid facing hefty fines and a lot of bother, make sure you are fully aware of the rules and regulations for building permits, codes and inspections before you make any changes to your property 36 vine January 2013 vinedigital.co.uk

HIDDEN SMART If you’re looking to transform your home in the New Year, what could make more of an interior statement than discreetly installed, modern technology?

C

overing home entertainment, cinema rooms, home automation, lighting control and design, New Wave AV have an array of modern and stylish options guaranteed to make your home look, sound and feel spectacular. They specialise in hidden technology, keeping wires and speakers as discreet as possible, thus keeping your interior as immaculate as possible. They are one of only a few platinum Control4 dealers in the UK, a leading operating system for the home. Do you want to reduce coffee table clutter with one remote that can do it all? Turn on your TV, draw the curtains, dim the lights and commence the movie all with one device. Or how about a house that remembers to lock itself at 10pm with curtains that draw as the sun hits? With Control4 everything works together, just the way you want it to. Bring the movies to your lounge with a state of the art home cinema system. A home cinema system can fit into virtually any size room starting with a large plasma display. If you want something with more impact they use a projection system capable of screen sizes up to four meters wide with surround sound, complete lighting control, full HD and now 3D. Artcoustic speakers can be built into your home cinema system. They transform the conventional loudspeaker with their modern look and they can even be hidden behind artwork; choose from a range of designs or commission your own. They also use Amina speakers – plastered into the wall to create a completely concealed audio solution. Lighting interacts with everything in your home yet it’s rarely seen as anything more than a solution for darkness. With New Wave AV, integrated sophisticated lighting can be set to the most economical settings for your entire home and also provide security with the ‘all lights on’ setting if the alarm is activated. Lighting systems are simple to use and easily fitted; they use Rako lighting which can be added to most properties without rewiring, saving on cabling and redecoration. New Wave AV’s Control4 automation, lighting and multi-room demonstration system will show you the benefits Control4 offers. From a single room to a multizone system we create a simple and flexible system for your home or business. n Visit www.newwaveav.co.uk or call 0845 500 0126 for more information or to arrange a free demonstration

or this client New Wave AV needed to create a dual purpose room, combining a day to day family room with a 60 inch plasma TV and a large screen projection home cinema room. The family had concerns over a large speaker system being visible so they used Artcoustic speakers, which worked wonderfully for them as they sound fantastic and look great hidden behind art work. When the family and friends gather for a movie night, one simple touch of a button brings down the motorised 132 inch projection screen.

New Wave AV created a multi-room audio video system and lighting control with intelligent keypads for a client. Controlled by an inbuilt touch screen, the client can check and control the system with ease. “I wanted to say a big thank you to you for the level of service you have given us; we have been really pleased with everything. DON'T MOVE, IMPROVE

In the current dormant sales market, homeowners need to make their home stand out from the rest more than ever Durable Designs

Anyone’s Home

Hardwood floors add both durability and style and are especially appealing to families (they won’t have to worry about spillages and stain remover). Wooden flooring is timeless and you could also fit under-floor heating, which may be ideal if your property has no central heating, though it won’t necessarily add value. Wooden flooring has come a long way, now there are a range of floorboards available; laminate is a cheaper alternative to authentic wood, so you’re sure to find something to suit your budget.

Redecorating can decrease or increase your property’s value; remember not everyone will like the same colour schemes as you. It’s best to stick with neutral colours as they are both contemporary and classic; think grey, white, ivory and beige. Neutral tones also help potential buyers to view the home as theirs, not yours. Last year a survey by HSBC found that redecorating a home now adds 62 per cent more value than it did in 2009, so it’s time to put on the overalls and get out the paintbrushes.

PRIVATE PARKING

Groom Your Garden

If you live in an area where parking can be problematic, converting your front garden into a driveway could add value to your property. Of course this will depend on whether you are building an entirely new driveway or adding a second space; a garage would also be beneficial for keeping vehicles and belongings secure. A survey by Nationwide recently found that off-road parking can increase the value of your home by 8 per cent, though legislation has recently changed, so you may need planning permission.

Saga Populus’ poll found that a garden is one of the top three most important features when looking to buy a property and tidying up your garden can be a cost-effective way to change how prospective buyers view your home. But that doesn’t mean you should go mad installing grand water features and sowing an array of exotic plants; if it seems like high maintenance buyers will lose interest. Simple tasks can make all the difference, for example decluttering the garden, removing weeds and mowing the lawn.

HOW TO CHOOSE

an interior designer

Hiring an interior designer is a fantastic way to give your home the “wow factor”. Debra McQuin, designer at McQuin Partnership and Marketing Director of the British Institute of Interior Design (BIID), gives you advice on how to choose an interior designer

1. Talk to your friends One of the best sources of information and feedback on a designer’s performance is word of mouth. Talk to your friends who’ve worked with designers or who can refer you to contacts who have. It’s important that you can see the results of a designer’s work and talk through any issues that another client may have encountered. A professional interior designer should also be willing to give you details of former clients you can One of talk to for references.

2. Research online

4. Keep a style file

the best sources of information and feedback on an actual designer’s performance is word of mouth

Search for designers online and take a good look at their websites. To make any research as effective as possible, decide on the key search criteria first, whether that’s location, style, or perhaps designers who offer a one-stop-shop approach in partnership with an architect, builder, etc. You should also take a look at the BIID website – www.biid.org.uk. This features a useful search function with direct links to many designers’ websites for further information.

3. Look at professional as well as

creative qualities Much of what makes a successful design project is in the detail of how the project is run. Be sure that the designer you select can demonstrate the essential skills necessary to running a successful project, such as coordination, communication

All photos are of McQuin Partnership projects

and organisation. If a designer cannot display these qualities, then it’s unlikely that your project will run smoothly. You should also make sure that the designer you select has the proper insurances in place to undertake a contract in the first place. By choosing a member of the BIID, you can be assured that your interior designer meets the highest professional standards.

It’s usually not necessary to see the exact thing you want on a designer’s website since most professionals will be able to work to your brief and won’t have a “house style”. However, it will certainly help the initial discussion to show the designer the kinds of things you like and make sure you’re on the same page as far as style is concerned.

5. Don’t be afraid to talk

about money One of the quickest ways to fall out with a designer is over money. My advice is to make sure that you understand the terms of the contract and how things will be charged before you appoint your designer. Everything should be totally transparent and easy to understand. If it’s not, you may end up with some unfortunate surprises later on! n Debra McQuin is an interior designer at McQuin Partnership and Marketing Director of the British Institute of Interior Design (BIID). January’s gardening jobs The dark, wet and cold month of January leaves us dealing with gale-force winds, frosts and occasionally, snow. Follow these simple tips to prepare your garden for the year ahead

Flowers Now is a good time to sit down with your seed catalogues and compile a list of what you want to plant this summer, this will kick-start your garden plan and ensure you get the bulbs you want. Plants such as Cordylines and Fuchsia need to be kept out of the frost, so put them in the conservatory or greenhouse.

Fruit and Vegetables There’s plenty to do to maintain your fruit and vegetable patches in January. If the ground isn’t frozen you can plant new fruit bushes and seed your potatoes ready to chit in February. Prune your apple and pear trees whilst they are dormant and sow broad beans in pots ready for planting out later. Cover your rhubarb plants with straw or dry leaves and an old bucket to encourage early shoots.

Greenhouse It is vital to keep your greenhouse ventilated by opening windows and doors on sunny days. Check your greenhouse or conservatory plants for pests

52 vine January 2013 vinedigital.co.uk

and/or disease and treat swiftly as required. You should also prepare your greenhouse generally for seed-sowing including cleaning, checking for leaks and organising lighting.

General gardening During the colder months we need to take care of the wildlife around us; remember to put food out for birdlife. If you bought a container grown Christmas tree you can plant it in the garden and enjoy it for many years to come but your soil needs to be suitable. Keep an eye out for snow, if it falls heavily brush shrubs and conifers with a broom to prevent damage to branches.

Brian McAteer, Theatre Director says “We hope that the Assembly Hall Theatre’s new season will demonstrate our continued commitment to a diverse programme for our patrons. Building on our success from last year, we have secured more West End shows for 2013 including The Rise and Fall of Little Voice, Save the Last Dance for Me, Carnaby Street and Priscilla Queen of the Desert”.

Dora the Explorer

Following the Christmas offering of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the season opens with Rise and Fall of Little Voice starring Beverley Callard. A story of music, divas and romance featuring songs by some of the world’s greatest female stars, including Shirley Bassey and Barbra Streisand. The award-winning Priscilla Queen of the Desert promises to give you the ride of your life. With a dazzling array of outrageous costumes and a hit parade of dance floor favorites, this wildly fresh and funny new musical is a journey to the heart of FABULOUS! PRISCILLA is “HUGELY ENTERTAINING …INSANELY GLITZY” – Daily Telegraph. Direct from a third West End Season, Yes, Prime Minister sees Jim Hacker and Sir Humphrey back in truly vintage form. “As politically sharp and blissfully funny as ever” Daily Telegraph, it is a hysterical foray into the comedy of politics and intrigue. Set against the backdrop of London’s West End in the 1960’s, with its iconic clubs, fashion and people, Carnaby Street is the real musical story of a generation. Jam packed with over 30 classic hits from the time, including ‘Roll Over Beethoven’, ‘Do Wah Diddy Diddy’, ‘Tired Of Waiting For You’, ‘You Really Got Me’, ‘Keep On Running’, ‘Sweets For My Sweet’… A must for serious music lovers … The Grammy Award-winning godfather of the ‘80s blues revival guitarist Robert Cray returns with his band, to promote a brand new album ‘Nothin But Love’. Cray helped to shape the blues on the national scene in the 1980s with his breakthrough album Strong Persuader in 1986. We are also delighted to welcome back Paul Carrack, Canon, Campbell, Watchhorn and O’Connor, formerly of the Dubliners and for the little ones, we have Nickelodeon’s Dora the Explorer! Jane Austen TONBRIDGE WALK

&

T

A circular walk packed with history, this Tonbridge route will leave you yearning to learn more about Jane Austen and her life

he starting point is Tonbridge library, one of the first libraries built in Kent, it is 130 years old. From the library you cross the bridge to the park, formerly a racecourse and in Jane Austen’s time, part of the castle estate. Tonbridge castle is the next key site on the tour; audio tours are available for those wanting to learn a bit more. Mary Hooker’s family owned the castle and Mary married George Austen’s (Jane's father) cousin. Through the picturesque gardens and past the old Corn Exchange the road joins the High Street, where many of Jane’s relatives lived. The route then continues on the High Street, crossing onto Lansdowne Road and continuing until you reach Tonbridge School. Jane Austen’s relatives were schooled here and some went on to work there too. You will then cross the road to the large red building, Ferox Hall, which was owned by the Danvers

family; their niece married Jane’s grandfather. Continue walking and turn left into the Bordyke where you will find Chauntlers: it is believed Jane’s great-grandmother lived here. The Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul in the heart of Tonbridge is the next significant spot. When you enter the side chapel of St Nicholas you will see nearly all of the people remembered on the North Wall were friends or relatives of Jane Austen and two of her relatives were also vicars here. As you leave the church, turn left and continue through the churchyard. You will walk past the row of old cottages in Church Street and come to Powells (now Lyons.) George Austen lived in the old building numbered 23 following the death of his parents. Though it is unknown whether Jane herself visited Tonbridge it is very possible as she knew many of its residents and frequently visited Kent. The walk will undoubtedly enlighten you on Jane Austen’s historical legacy and ancestry.

LENGTH: 2.4 miles
