MONTHLY
MUSTS Natalie Lambert takes a look at some of the best things to do this month
MUST-SEE
MUST-READ Eleanor Catton’s The Luminaries is set for big things in the up-and-coming months. Not only is it a literary masterpiece, but it won The Man Booker Prize last month. The Luminaries is set in 1866 in Hokitika, a small town on New Zealand’s South Island. The story revolves around Walter Moody, a businessman who is trying to make his fortune, and his accidental meeting with 12 men. As the story progresses through each person’s accounts, a wealthy man vanishes and a huge sum of gold appears. Although the length of the book might be a turn-off, it is written in a cleverly original structure and is packed with gripping psychological pleasures. n Hardback edition now available from Sevenoaks Bookshop, RRP £18.99
MUST-LISTEN
As we all know Christmas is fast approaching and on 28 November a festive fun evening is promised as special guest Dr Hilary Jones visits Westerham to switch on the Christmas lights. The festivities will begin on The Green at 5pm where the Westerham Local Vocals and the Oxted Rock Choir will be performing carols, and St Mary’s Church will also be open for you to visit the Christmas Tree Festival. The shops and stalls will also be open for late night Christmas shopping.
After the huge success of their last album, Arcade Fire are back with their new album, Reflektor. With influences from Haitian rara music, the Grammy Award-winning band have incorporated this unique sound into their album along with their ever popular poetic lyrics and guitar riffs. SECOND INTERVIEW The page that’s all about you
READERS’ PETS PET NAME: Minnie OWNER: Laura-May Shayler LIKES AND DISLIKES: Minnie absolutely LOVES cuddles and I always find her snuggling under blankets and jumpers. She spends a lot of time sleeping in cosy places and keeping nice and toasty. She doesn’t like the vacuum ‘monster’! FAVOURITE TREAT: She loves nothing more than a tasty Paddywack chew (and doggy sausages but they make her stinky so she doesn’t get them very often!) A WORD FROM THE OWNER: Minnie thinks she is a human – she loves to give hugs, sleeps under a duvet and enjoys a nice cup of tea. She has to be one of the most affectionate, soppy and loving dogs I have ever known. If you think you’ve got a print-worthy pet then email us at editor@vinedigital.co.uk
NEWS FROM
THE MP with Michael Fallon MP
The economic recovery seems to be now well underway. The government, however, has a longer-term goal and remains committed to helping families with their everyday bills. Ed Miliband tried, but some might say failed, to address this issue in his conference speech last month. Instead of offering the British people a credible plan to help families with the cost of living, he returned to the old Labour ways of spend now, pay later, with a promise to freeze energy bills for two years if Labour wins the next general election. However, there is a problem with this concept in that the move would deter major energy companies from crucial investment in Britain and would put our economic recovery once again at risk. Unlike Mr Miliband’s uncosted proposal, the government’s Energy Bill ensures that
consumers get the cheapest possible energy tariff and can switch more easily. Our reforms will make energy suppliers put vulnerable customers on the lowest tariffs unless they choose otherwise. It is not just energy bills where the government is aiming to help families; we have frozen council tax, stopped fuel duty increases and capped rail fares. We have also increased income tax allowance and the lowest paid homes will not pay income tax at all. Hardworking residents of Sevenoaks and Swanley are beginning to feel the effects of the country’s economic recovery. With this government on their side, they can share in the growth and new jobs that will continue to come. n Have a question for the MP? Please send to editor@vinedigital.co.uk

Philip Martin Brown Philip Martin Brown tackles our quick-fire questions about his upcoming role in Jack and the Beanstalk at The Assembly Hall Theatre Are you looking forward to starring as Fleshcreep in Jack and the Beanstalk and how did you get into pantomime? I can’t wait to play such a great villain! When I was in my twenties, I did a couple of pantos in Chipping Norton and the Oxford Theatre playing a dame and a villain, which are both great characters. When I was younger I actually trained to be a teacher which I hadn’t originally planned on doing. What’s your favourite aspect? It has to be the audience. Kids are so brutally honest and you get feedback straight away. In that sense pantomime is a great platform for improvisation! If you get something wrong one night they’ll let you know, so there’s always opportunity to try new material the next. The atmosphere is pretty lively and as soon as one person starts booing it’s contagious. How do you get into character? Well it’s always great to play the villain. You have to remember that the villain is the one who always sticks in people's minds and writers like writing for that type of character. There’s something cathartic about playing a villain and getting to break the rules. What else have you got in the pipeline? I’m currently filming Death Comes to Pemberley, set seven years after Pride and Prejudice. I get to play Mr Darcy’s coachman but I have a dark secret. I also feel very lucky to be starring in Endeavour on ITV, where I play a man at his wit’s end because his daughter has gone missing. What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you on stage? I’ve got very good verbal memory but bad spatial awareness and visual memory, so sword fights are a nightmare! I went on stage not to long ago as Captain Hook but I forgot my sword, so I had to improvise with my hook – I nearly had the guy’s eye out! n Philip stars as Fleshcreep in Jack and the Beanstalk at Assembly Hall Theatre in Tunbridge Wells from 13 Dec to 5 Jan. M
SP Foreign Exchange Services was born out of one man’s disappointment and frustration at the lack of informed opinion and honest professional advice offered by many of the commercial FX providers and banks. MSP Foreign Exchange Services is different, existing to provide a bespoke advisory facility and execution platform in physical FX delivery for the corporate and private sectors from someone who has been there, seen it, done it and is still doing it! Not only will you benefit from improved foreign currency exchange rates, but you will also receive the best independent advice from a highly successful former Interbank FX trader to execute your deal at the optimum moment, given your timeframe and the prevailing market conditions. MSPFX offer complete security of funds by executing trades only through preferred FSA and HMRC-regulated providers. Mike, aka “Oscar”, Paterson spent over 20 years in the Inter-bank Spot FX market as a senior trader with UBS and Credit Suisse, with three years in between as Head of FX at State Bank of Victoria in London. With personal daily trading volumes in excess of $2 billion, Mike established himself as a trader of note combining professional integrity with a cynical grasp of seizing market opportunity. Since leaving the City, Mike has been working as an independent consultant and was at the

here are prospective shale gas reserves underneath parts of Kent, Surrey and Sussex and the recent fracking debate has led many to ask what protection they have against unwanted mining operations. What is fracking? Fracking is “hydraulic fracturing”; the process of drilling holes and pumping high-pressure water and chemicals into them, splitting underground rocks and thereby releasing the shale gas within. The UK government believes shale gas could boost the UK’s economy and provide increased energy independence. However, opponents claim that it is a harmful practice that causes minor earthquakes, water contamination and will reduce the UK’s momentum towards using sustainable energy sources. Fracking under your land The state owns all the shale gas in the UK by default, as well as having the power to grant licences to explore for it and mine it. As a small comfort to those who are worried, planning consent is required to commence operations, and any planned exploration or drilling must be on the public record. As a starting point, mining companies cannot access what is under your land without trespassing on it. However, if they cannot get your permission to mine then a licence-holding company can apply for rights of access, which are deemed necessary to reach the gas. If these rights were granted you would be paid compensation as
though the state had compulsorily purchased the rights from you. Unfortunately, nobody would ever expect you to use the land that far down, so you would only get a very limited amount in comparison to their profits. Forewarned is forearmed The effect of fracking on property prices is difficult to predict. In the USA, it has caused long-term devaluation in some areas. It is reported that devaluation is expected initially, but if the mining does not cause as much damage and disruption as is feared, prices may recover. For those about to buy a property, your solicitor will undertake property searches and can carry out a specific search to cover fracking and other mining activities and refer the results of that search to you and your lender and/or surveyor for their professional opinion. There are now property searches available to find out about existing and planned hydrocarbon exploration within 500m of the property you own or are proposing to buy. You will also need to ensure that you can secure buildings insurance if fracking is a real risk. For those who already own property, you will also need to make sure you are covered against the risks posed by fracking. The common fear is that fracking will cause earthquakes or subsidence. Some buildings insurance providers cover this risk as an add-on to your policy, some exclude it and some cover it as part of existing cover for “ground movement”.

Nigel Taylor of NJT Accountancy discusses recent changes in regulation and rate charges
The team at Warners Solicitors offer regular expert advice on topics relevant to our everyday lives. This month Jane Bohill looks at the Help to Buy Scheme
MATTERS
M
ost new regulations affecting businesses come into force on ‘common commencement dates’ in April and October each year. Here are some changes from this year: Unfair dismissal compensation cap Compensation payments for individuals who win unfair dismissal claims will now be capped, under changes that came into force on 29 July 2013. Claimants who win their case will still be awarded the first part of compensation calculated on their age, length of service and weekly pay. However, the second part of compensation, which is calculated on the employee’s financial loss (both past and future) as a result of dismissal – including benefits, such as a loss of pension – will be capped. The claimant will continue to receive the maximum £74,200 or, under the new rules, 52 weeks’ pay whichever is the lower. ‘Shares for rights’ employee contracts As of 1 September 2013, employees can choose a new employment status that allows them to waive certain employment rights in exchange for shares in their employer’s company. Employees cannot be forced into ‘shareholder’ status and they must be given – rather than purchase – a minimum of £2,000 worth of shares in their employer’s company. In a bid to boost take-up of the scheme, employee shareholders can take advantage of capital gains exemptions on gains made from the sale of shares worth up to £50,000. Employees still retain, among other employment rights, the right to claim sick pay, maternity leave, time off for emergencies and paid annual leave. But they
will forfeit: • Most unfair dismissal rights • The right to statutory redundancy pay • Flexible working rights – except for in the two-week period after a return from parental leave • Certain statutory rights to request time off to train As of October 2013: National Minimum Wage The NMW rates will increase from 1 October 2013: • the adult rate (21 years plus) will increase by 12p to £6.31 an hour • the 18-20 year old rate will increase by 5p to £5.03 • the 16-17 year old rate will increase by 4p to £3.72 • the apprentice rate will increase by 3p to £2.68 NMW ‘naming and shaming’ scheme Employers who break NMW rules are liable to be ‘named and shamed’ under an existing Department for Business, Innovation and Skills scheme. Prior to 1 October 2013, they had to owe at least £2,000 to workers – and owe an average £500 per worker – before being named. However, new rules in effect from 1 October 2013 remove these restrictions. As well as being named, employers who pay workers less than the minimum wage will continue to pay back arrears of wages at current minimum wage rates and face financial penalties of up to £5,000. T
he government recently unveiled the second phase of the Help to Buy scheme which is designed to help those buyers who can only afford a small deposit to purchase either their first home or move to another home. The first phase was launched in April this year for new build properties only. Phase 1 required the buyer to have a 5% deposit. The buyer could then borrow up to 20% from the Government as an interest-free loan for the first five years. The balance (up to 75%) is made up of a mortgage. After five years, interest is payable on the government loan on top of the existing mortgage repayments. Repayment of the loan is required when the property is sold or at the end of the mortgage period, whichever occurs first. The second phase, which came into effect last month, allows buyers who only have a 5% deposit to purchase a property (new build or otherwise) by obtaining a 95% mortgage. The scheme allows the lender to obtain a guarantee from the government for up to 15% of the value of the property. There are conditions attached. The property must be the buyer’s main residence. Second homes and buy-to-let properties are
not included in this scheme. The scheme is only available for properties sold up to £600,000 in the UK and at the moment it is scheduled to run only for the next three years. It is worth remembering that the government is guaranteeing the loan for the lender only and not the buyer. Should the buyer default on the mortgage, the full amount of the loan (including the monies borrowed under the Help to Buy Scheme) will be payable to the lender in full. So how do you go about obtaining this loan? Some, but not all lenders, are participating in this scheme, with others hoping to follow in the near future. The rates are fairly competitive at this stage, although better deals are probably available to those who are holding a full 25% deposit themselves. Time will tell if this scheme will hinder or assist the property market. Sceptics of this scheme are concerned that this will create a housing boom, whilst others advise that the government’s funding (currently stated as being £12 billion) will have been used up by the end of the first year. However, buyers may prefer to be indebted to the government under this scheme rather than the bank of mum and dad!

Vine has travelled the last three centuries in its trilogy on the past, present and future of Sevenoaks. In this third and final instalment, we now look forward to the century to come. From 3D printing to an interactive high street, Cara McGoogan, Sian Lazell and Natalie Lambert explore exactly what the future holds for Sevenoaks
L
ast month the BBC revealed its vision for the future. In 1973 James Burke, BBC science presenter, looked forward in time and gave us an accurate vision of our future. The BBC recapped Burke’s very apt prediction of the future of “databanks, citizen’s dossiers, identity cards and restrictions on the individual. He believed the storage of personal information in data banks would be accepted not resented, at least by the young. It will be an open, honest society in which the distant hum and chatter of machines would be as commonplace as birdsong. Computer-aided learning systems will provide every child with their own plug-in super teacher. They will be in factories and offices everywhere.” Forty years later, having seen Burke’s predictions come into full fruition, the BBC returned to him to find out what the next century would hold for us. Burke says the future will be built by the “nano fabricator” which will give everyone complete autonomy to fabricate their every need from air, water and dirt. Burke predicts in 80 to 90 years “there will be no illness, of course,” after all “It is already possible to use nano technology to deliver specific chemicals to specific cells.” Most interestingly, he predicts this will be a green world in which “you won’t pollute, because nothing will create pollution.” He sees gardening becoming one of the key pastimes, with the planet “a giant, untouched wilderness dotted with gardens.” Sevenoaks sits in the heart of Kent, the Garden of England, placing us right at the centre of Burke’s predictions for the future. In light of this vision, we’ve conducted a similar experiment to the BBC, approaching the leaders of Sevenoaks to find out how Sevenoaks is set to change and where we are heading.

UNITED WE PROSPER The Sevenoaks Town Partnership is a scheme created by the town council to reinvigorate the local economy by bringing Sevenoaks schools, clubs, charities and businesses together in an online environment. A cutting edge initiative, this plan is a flagship venture in town councils across the UK. Going live last May, the Sevenoaks Town Partnership’s website is now available on infopods throughout the town too, which the council have invested £8000 in, replacing traditional tourist information boards. Creating a new engaging, interactive high street, the council hopes that in conjunction with the beautiful, historical architecture of the town, Sevenoaks “will become a ‘novelty’ in the UK and will attract visitors and local communities.” n For more information, visit www.sevenoakspartnership.org
SEVENOAKS SCHOOL Commenting on their plans for the future, Sevenoaks School expressed their aim to allow the community to “benefit from our fantastic facilities”. Through this endeavour, they anticipate more links with local schools, access for elite sports clubs to their sports facilities and unique activities such as Science Week. They are planning the creation of a new Science and Technology building so that students “can access the latest science and technological equipment.” They also believe new developments such as The Space Performing Arts Centre will “have an integral role in the town’s future.” HAVE YOUR SAY ON LOCAL DEVELOPMENT The town council is working in conjunction with the 2011 Localism Act to allow members of the public have their say in the future of our town. They are looking to work with and for the community to bring a prosperous future to Sevenoaks as a market town over the next decade. Sevenoaks town clerk, Linda Larter, says the Neighbourhood Plan is set “to be as far reaching and inclusive as possible, seeking long term views of residents, businesses and organisations for what is needed for the future of Sevenoaks as a market town.” n To have your say get in touch with us via Twitter or Facebook
MICHAEL FALLON MP MP Michael Fallon’s main desire for the future of Sevenoaks lies in their schooling system. He believes Sevenoaks “needs” a grammar school. He explained how he has long campaigned for the build of one and recently encouraged Secretary of State for Education, Michael Gove, to “make a speedy decision.”
KNOLE PARK A significant part of Sevenoaks’ heritage, Knole Park will indubitably be integral to our future as well. With community engagement at the heart of Knole Park, they intend to continue to stand at the heart of Sevenoaks as we develop over the coming years. Among their plans for the future is the development of a new conservation studio from which they can run courses and qualifications in heritage subjects. Working closely with those growing up in Sevenoaks, Knole offer work experience and have hosted exhibitions by local students from K College and Knole Academy. When asked what will be a piece of heritage 100 years from now, Laura Ellis from Knole Park said, “Having been part of Sevenoaks’ heritage since 1456, we want to ensure Knole will be for the next 600 years. In 20 year’s time we hope visitors will go away feeling they’ve discovered something new. Our ongoing work with the people and businesses of Sevenoaks will continue to position Knole within the centre of the thriving local community.”
SEVENOAKS BOOKSHOP Agreeing with the Sevenoaks Town Partnership, owner of the Sevenoaks Bookshop, Valerie, believes the future of Sevenoaks lies in thriving business and tourism industries. She encourages residents and the council to cherish the historical and unique architecture: “how can a historic town bordered by Knole on one side and the Vine on the other fail to please?” Opening in 1948, the Sevenoaks Bookshop has become part of the heritage of Sevenoaks itself, a symbol that reflects the importance of historicity and progression in the success of the town. Putting the bookshop’s development plan into action, Valerie told us of how she is enacting her dream of incorporating within the bookshop a space where customers can enjoy tea, coffee and delicious homemade cakes. She commented that it has “delighted” customers and she’s very pleased with the positive feedback she’s received. Valerie is certain that her bookstore will still be “satisfying the people of Sevenoaks’ voracious appetite for good books” for years to come. n To find out more about Sevenoaks Bookshop visit www.sevenoaksbookshop.co.uk

Sian Lazell talks to Eliza Ecclestone of Clarity Mediators about why mediation at St Clere is a step in the right direction
B
eing involved in legal proceedings is terrifying for most of us. We worry that it will take forever, be incredibly stressful and cost a fortune. This is never more true than when it involves your family. During divorce proceedings or a separation, it is quite commonplace for disagreements to arise and individuals can find that they have reached an impasse about finances or plans for the children. At this very sensitive time it can be hard to see the light at
22 vine November 2013 vinedigital.co.uk
the end of the tunnel as many other aspects of daily life, such as career, outside commitments and, most importantly, children and relatives can be adversely affected by the conflict. One practical alternative to navigating around these difficult situations is mediation. Some people are uncertain about what mediation involves, and all too often confuse it with couples therapy. In fact, mediation is simply an alternative to long, drawn-out legal proceedings and has many benefits.
With a background in family law, Eliza Ecclestone, owner of St Clere Estate and partner of Clarity Mediators, possesses a wide knowledge and expertise in matters regarding divorce proceedings. She knows all too well what a stressful time it can be in an individual’s life: after witnessing many trials and tribulations involving family breakdown, she saw that going through the court process rarely leads to a good outcome for a separating couple and should be used only as a last resort due to the time, stress and expense involved. Explaining mediation in laymen’s terms, Eliza outlines, “Mediation is one step removed from sitting around a kitchen table with your ex and discussing how to sort out arrangements for the kids and the finances in a composed and organised way, which is clearly the best option, but very hard to manage in reality. In mediation, a mediator will act as a middle person, setting ground rules and keeping the conversation positive and progressive.” “When both partners go to see their solicitors, each person’s representative is inevitably going to fight their corner and reassure them that they are in a strong position, which can leave both parties convinced that they are in the right, and makes coming to a settlement increasingly unlikely.” It would seem that with mediation, there come three main benefits. Firstly, mediation is fast, and is usually completed after a handful of sessions. Mediation may cost a few thousand pounds; contested proceedings between individuals can lead to to huge legal fees amounting to tens (and sometimes hundreds) of thousands of pounds. Finally, mediation ensures that arrangements are made as amicably as possible. It can sometimes be stressful and there are difficult moments, but nothing like the long-term pressure of contested legal proceedings against your ex. Eliza advises clients to speak to their solicitor during the process, and feels solicitors are essential to the process as they advise and reassure that the settlement reached is fair to both sides. She says, “Most solicitors are very supportive of working with mediators to make the search for a settlement as smooth and stress free as possible. Each person hopefully comes out of mediation feeling satisfied that they’ve been treated fairly, listened to, and that any agreement is reasonable and one they can live with.” When children are involved, divorce proceedings can take their toll if the parents are in conflict. By continuing to communicate directly and positively about the children with the help of the mediator, the foundations are in place for a good ongoing co-parenting relationship which is of vital importance to help children adjust following family breakdown. St Clere is an ideal place for mediation to take place. Eliza explains, “The benefit of people coming to St Clere is that they are provided with a calm environment in which to discuss potentially stressful matters. We find people are very open minded and hopeful about sorting things out as they are in a totally new environment.” It’s no doubt that the countryside has desirable effects on one’s well being and with St Clere sitting comfortably between hills of rolling, green farmland, no other place could put you in a better frame of mind. When discussing matters relating to family, housing, arrangements for children and any other aspects relevant to separation from a partner, you no doubt would want a place where you can think things through clearly and without outside influences. The best way to achieve this is by putting things back into an objective perspective and keeping the conversation future-focused. Mediation is actually an alternative to a lengthy and expensive way of reaching a professional, legal outcome. Eliza says, “The aim of mediation is to guide two people to their own agreement, providing structure and giving people the best chance of moving forward quickly and as amicably as possible.”

SUSHI at SEVEN Ahead of innovative Japanese restaurant Seven Sushi’s opening, Sian Lazell explores how the team behind El Matador are bringing a new dining experience to Sevenoaks

eam El Matador are bringing a new lease of life in the form of fresh sushi and fine Japanese cuisine restaurant, Seven. Following on from the continued success of El Matador, the excellent and established steak and tapas venue, head of operations Hugo Peyrel aspires to breathe new life into the town through the dynamic influences that lend themselves to Seven. You may be asking yourself ‘Why Japanese?’ but Hugo and his team have the answers. It is undoubtedly true that Japanese cuisine is a hugely overlooked niche, with virtually no high calibre sushi restaurants found outside of the capital. Whilst the headiness of the cosmopolitan lifestyle found in London is something people travel from far and wide to experience, why travel all that way when you can submerge yourself in the same culture right on your doorstep? The creation of Seven is no small feat, with time and dedication going into sourcing the best expertise in the industry to form an outstanding system of first class chefs and back of house staff. Due to their collaboration with Planeta Sushi and their consultant Enrique Huentemil, providing their vast experience in the restaurant industry, Seven are privileged to have a strong alliance with Japan Centre. Their expertise of Japanese culinary traditions and ability to source authentic, quality Japanese ingredients, and Aliz’ and Hugo’s passion for service, are the fundamental pillars of Seven. Although a new and innovative venture, Seven can expect to benefit from the same ethos as El Matador, with strong involvement and influence from the team there including Hugo Peyrel, Aliz Peyrel, Rado, Dan and Gianina. What’s more, Seven will see the arrival of key team members from Ibiza’s contemporary go-to club, Blue Marlin. Providing an ethic centred around service and high-life leisure, Blue Marlin are sure to bring all the aspects that will make Seven the vogue hot spot outside of London. When it comes down to the food, there’s a profusion of dishes to choose from. Whilst fresh, mouth-watering sushi and rolls are a highlight, they’re not everyone’s first choice. That’s why Seven have created a delectable menu consisting of Japanese cuisine, not just sushi. What’s more, a young person’s menu has been skilfully crafted through a strong family focus at the restaurant and is served at an unbeatable price. Lunchtime is also set to be a focal point, with the introduction of delicious Bento boxes, for people who want a tasty and healthy way to get through the day. With delivery of Bento boxes also available, sushi on the go has never been more convenient. Taking the lead from current trends in Tokyo, Seven will deliver a range of new and distinct flavours; it’s high-end quality at a normal price. And where better to create a new culinary experience than in the bespoke ambience that is the restaurant and terrace? With a white heated terrace, open all year round, benefiting from luxe furnishing, top of the range sound system for those lively nights and a superbly stocked bar serving warm and cold Saki, Seven is on track to be the sociable and sought-after dining experience Sevenoaks is looking for.

HIGH STYLE AT DANIEL JORDAN From catwalks to celebrities and setting up base in Sevenoaks, Vine looks at why Daniel Jordan is the up-and-coming place to go and how it is aiming high
A
fter taking up residence in Sevenoaks, things are showing no sign of slowing down for Daniel Jordan London and Daniel himself has had a busy few months to say the least. During Paris Fashion Week, the sleek and in vogue
hairstyles showcased on the catwalk of the Lie Sang Bong show, who is none other than Lady Gaga’s designer and has been hailed as the Alexander McQueen of Korea, were all courtesy of Daniel’s expertise. On the days that the salon is shut, Daniel is busy styling the hair of the rich and famous in some of the most prestigious hotels in the capital. In addition, extentionist Louise Bailey who used to work with Daniel, is personally training Bobbie of Daniel Jordan so she can offer her Hair Extension Professional Range, currently seen on the likes of Caroline Flack, Ellie Goulding and Yasmin Le Bon. It’s this kind of dedication and personal service that has earned the salon its up and coming reputation with the people of Sevenoaks. Recently, Daniel Jordan got really involved with

the community by helping out for Breast Cancer Awareness week. Not only did they give away some fabulous UNITE products in order to raise money for the cause, they also auctioned off a whole year’s worth of free hair cuts. Talking about the community, Daniel is also in talks with local colleges where in the not so far future he’ll be sharing his expertise with the next generation of top-class stylists. It wasn’t so long ago that Daniel took his knowledge to the stage at UNITE’s Up Close and Personal show, where he showcased on stage all the latest and innovative cutting and styling techniques. As well as being an individual stockist of the sought-after UNITE range, Daniel Jordan is setting out to change the face of hair colouring too, with the use of milk_shake’s hair colour line. milk_shake is a different brand of hair colouring that uses natural ingredients such as milk proteins and enriching fruit extracts to leave hair nourished and in beautiful condition after any treatment. What’s more, Daniel and head colourist
Louise are soon to be featured artists on milk_shake’s website. Now permanently rooted in Sevenoaks, Daniel Jordan London are dedicated to bringing the best and most individualised service their clientele could ask for. By devoting their time solely to each client, Daniel and his team focus on everything from face shape to hair texture, to make sure each individual gets the prefect cut and style.

BODY SHOP CRANBROOK NORTH WALK GRADE: MEDIUM DISTANCE: 2.6 MILES (4.2KM) DURATION: 1 HOUR 30 MINS
This moderate 2.6 mile walk allows you to explore the charming small town of Cranbrook before discovering the beauty of the Angley Woods
P
ark in the town centre (there is free parking in a large car park by the Co-op supermarket) and head up the high street towards Hartley. Whilst walking up the high street discover the historic buildings such as the Congregational Church and Broadchurch Cottage. Near the end of the high street turn right into New Road and carry on until you reach a main road (A229). Cross this road with care and go around the barrier into the Angley Woods. Follow the footpath through the woods, bearing a right at the fork. Carry on along the footpath and eventually turn left to go over a footbridge before bearing
right around the paddocks. Leave the woods with the paddocks on your right and a fence on your left. Walk along the uneven footpath continuing onto the driveway up to the main road (A229). Cautiously cross the road and join the footpath on the opposite side with the gate. Carry on up the footpath between the playing fields and Cranbrook Primary School. At the end of the path, bear left through the gate and carry on towards the churchyard. Once you have passed through the churchyard you will eventually find yourself at the beginning of your walk, near the Weald Information Centre.

Joe Birch of the Better Body Shop answers your health and fitness questions Q: I want to get more toned but I’m not quite sure how to go about it. Can you help? Amy J, Sevenoaks A: Nearly every client we receive at the Better Body Shop uses the word toning as one of their main goals. Toning is not a special adaptation that happens to the muscle (or fat) to make you look more “toned”. It is quite simply a loss of body fat coupled with an increase (or just maintenance) of muscle mass. Almost every conventional diet program ever conceived has one thing in common: extremely low calories. Nearly all of these low calorie diets produce weight loss in the beginning. The problem is, none of them work for long – it is not healthy or effective to try and lose fat by starving yourself. Furthermore, this type of short-term weight loss does not result in the toned look that most people envisage when they embark on a diet/ exercise regime. To lose body fat, you must create a calorie deficit. There are two ways you can do this: 1) decrease your caloric intake from food, or 2) increase the amount of calories you burn through exercise. Both of these methods should be considered when looking to get the fastest and most optimal results. The keys to getting a “toned” physique are: • Allow yourself to eat more of the essential nutrients (proteins, fats, fruit & vegetables) • Use carbohydrate to help fuel
exercise (think: eating most of your carbohydrates in the meal before and the meal after your workout) • Use predominantly strength training to help retain or even increase muscle mass while in a calorie deficit (for most people, especially women, it is unlikely that you will increase muscle mass when in a calorie deficit. However, in order to look toned you want to retain as much as possible) • Use cardiovascular training as a tool to help you create a calorie deficit (combination of interval training and traditional running/cycling/rowing etc) It’s amazing how quickly you can notice the change in your physique when you put nutrition, cardio and weight training all together at once. The results are synergistic. Always keep in mind that when attempting to go from thin, or only slightly overweight, to “toned”, the goal should always be FAT loss not weight loss. You must distinguish between the two, as the scales can be very misleading. The best measure here is body fat percentage (BF%) and before and after photos. If you have not yet got your BF% tested and are currently using body weight as your goal, then you should consider doing so straight away. BF% will give you a much better objective measure of your success, even if the scales stay completely still! Joe Birch Msc
