On 28 September Ide Hill Village welcomed the opening of their new community shop. After their original village shop closed in July 2011, the village pulled together and opened a temporary shop next to the village hall. They managed to raise an amazing £200,000 through local support and also with the help of grants from the Plunkett Foundation, Cory Environmental Trust and Defra. Although the shop has now been built, the community is still working together as it will be run by 40 local volunteers. Even better, through this support the shop and post office will be able to be open seven days per week. Another poignant part of the build is that the shop will provide a modern post office and a well-stocked shop. This will allow locals to buy their necessities without having to go several miles to the nearest supermarket. Andy Edmonds, chair of the company and of its committee, spoke of his joy. “I would like to thank everybody who has contributed to this project. I feel that the building of the Ide Hill Shop shows that if a small community wants something badly enough and is prepared to pull together, mountains can be moved. Many people have worked hard to get to this stage and I know they have all found it to be a very rewarding experience. We now have to work at making the project selfsupporting, which I firmly believe it will be.”

Webb’s inspirational e-book Newly available as an e-book, Graham Webb’s Out of the Bottle is a truly inspirational autobiography that takes a look at the struggles of his life. Webb takes you on a journey through the lows, such as dropping out of school and numerous job rejections, before reaching the ultimate high of building his own global brand from scratch. Webb is an inspiration to others who have faced difficulties in their lives and his determination to succeed in the face of adversity is extremely motivating. n Out of the Bottle is now available as an e-book from www.amazon.co.uk for £6.49 and on iTunes for £8.99

Kent Painters’ great success Over August twenty budding actors, screenplay writers and filmmakers gathered at Ightham Mote to create their own film. Starting the week with the scriptwriting process, they had decided on the casting, costume and story by the end of the Monday. They then spent four days shooting their very own film in the passageways, rooms and grounds of the spectacular Ightham Mote. This project was run across three venues over the summer, with filming taking place with two other groups at St Mary Kippington Church and The Stag Theatre. Their films will premiere on 20 October at The Stag Theatre Cinema. Another Halloween-themed filming event will be happening in October so keep your eyes peeled!

Victory for Chapman

After being diagnosed with dementia four years ago, Tom Coppins of Wrotham has taken on a 10 kilometre ‘memory walk’ to raise money for the Alzheimers Society. Joined by his wife Pauline Coppins, Coronation Street actress Sally Lindsay and hundreds of other supporters, Tom completed this impressive journey on Sunday 29 September at Leeds Castle, Maidstone.

After Dame Kelly Holmes visited Combe Bank this year, New Beacon School welcomed a very important visitor in September in the form of England rugby star Mike Tindall. Tindall, who is expecting his first child with the Queen’s granddaughter, Zara Phillips, opened the school’s new all-weather pitch before giving the New Beacon rugby team a tough coaching session.

Renowned Sevenoaks hairdressers, The Square Salon and Spa, proved themselves as leading trendsetters at this year’s London Fashion Week. Creative Director Ben Hards and his team took to the catwalk in the capital to debut their work and keep their fans up to date with all the behind the scenes action at the event. For more information visit www. thesquaresalon.com.

Learning Lounge, which launched in September, is a new training course run by UKCP registered psychotherapist Pauline Lucas. Taking place over three days on 25 October and 29 November, the sessions are aimed at helping parents work through the issues they experience when raising their children. Hilary Chapman, of Sevenoaks Bowling Club, was left a winner on the Finals Day at the end of this year’s season. It had been a long road for Hilary. In her 25 years of membership at the club she had placed as a runner up in the club’s four previous finals. Hitting her target this year meant no more disappointments, as she took home the winning championship title.

SEVENOAKS STAR Claire Stone Next year may seem a long way off but Claire Stone from Sevenoaks already has big plans. From Wednesday 30 April to Sunday 4 May 2014, Claire and her friend will be taking on an astounding 270-mile bike ride challenge to raise money for Demelza Hospice Care for Children. Explaining why she’s taking part in the epic ride Claire said, “Our good friend’s son, Joshua, was born with an undiagnosed condition and when he needed palliative care, the family were introduced to the Demelza team; their care helped our friends through their darkest days. Joshua’s mummy and I will be riding to Paris together in memory of Joshua and aim to raise as much as we possibly can to ensure that Demelza can continue to give vital support to families when they need it most.” Demelza care for over 800 children with life-threatening conditions, giving them and their family some well deserved respite. NEWS from

the MP with Michael Fallon MP

It has now become clear that the Government’s economic plan is working. Exports are up, business investment is rising and the manufacturing and construction sectors are growing. Britain is indeed experiencing the fastest economic growth since the 1990s. Those who argued in favour of plan B have lost the argument as they cannot explain the recent improvements in the economy. Although we still have a long way to go, the economy is finally turning a corner; going back to over-spending and over-borrowing, after all the sacrifices that people have made, would be disastrous. There are now more people in work than ever before (29.7 million) with over 1.3 million new jobs created in the last three years. But youth unemployment is still too high. That is why on 6 September, I hosted an all-day Jobs Fair in Swanley. Over 500 people attended, with queues of local jobseekers lining up outside the Alexandra Suite all morning. The Jobs Fair had a fantastic range of

employers, from local companies in both Sevenoaks and Swanley to public services like the Royal Navy and Kent Police. It was an excellent opportunity for potential employers to meet talented, local people looking for work. Initial feedback has been great; employers were impressed with the excellent quality of applicants and the high level of interest shown. Many attendees also took advantage of a number of seminars and workshops held throughout the day, on everything from careers advice to CV writing and practising mock interviews. Sevenoaks and Swanley are clearly well on the way to recovery with unemployment down 10% since last year. However, as we turn a corner we must not be complacent. There is still much to do to ensure that everybody benefits from the recovery and that we create a much better balanced economy for the future. n Have a question for the MP? Sarah Jane Buckley As a taster for our upcoming interviews with the cast of Jack and the Beanstalk at the Assembly Halls Theatre, Sarah Jane Buckley talks about playing the good fairy and her love for Eva Cassidy Sarah, tell us a bit about how you got into panto and your favourite characters I trained as an actress in Guildford and got into panto quite quickly – I performed in my first when I was 21! With characters, I’ve played principal girl to principal boy and everything in between. One of my favourites was playing Mrs Darling in Peter Pan, alongside Philip Martin Brown as Captain Hook. Although principal boy is always quite fun – there’s a lot thigh slapping and hands on hips! I’m really looking forward to playing the good fairy in Jack and the Beanstalk however because I get to interact with so many other characters. Have you got much in the pipeline for the future? I’ve acted in Hormonal Housewives, which was great fun, and then went on to play Eva Cassidy in Over the Rainbow. It was a very emotional part for me and one that I spent a lot of time preparing for. I practised for a long time to sing just like Eva and I found that with such a deep character, I really had to get under her skin. At the moment I am busy writing and producing a production called Song Bird about the late singer. It will be a sort of concert-style production, which is set to be shown in theatres from next year. She’s an incredible character to play and I feel extremely lucky. Finally, what’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you on stage? Once when I was on stage in front of a large audience, one of the other characters was supposed to serenade me from a balcony. In the middle of him singing the call curtain unexpectedly dropped in front of him, cutting him off from my sight, so I was left talking to him through the curtain! We tried to carry on and improvise but it was quite funny seeing him run down the steps and around the stage to get back in front of the cloth and continue singing with my character. Needless to say, it didn’t help to set a romantic mood! n For more information about Jack and the Beanstalk at the Assembly Hall Theatre, visit www.assemblyhalltheatre.co.uk

n 2012 “squatting” in residential property became a criminal offence. Owners of rented residential property are now able to contact the police to have squatters removed whereas previously, proceedings first had to be issued in the County Court or High Court. As a direct consequence of this, it seems squatters are now targeting nonresidential property. Commercial property owners are feeling the effect of the Government’s decision to limit the criminal offence of squatting to just residential properties. This appears to only have worsened the financial worry of commercial property owners, who are still having to resort to civil proceedings. Owners of non-residential property (schools, offices, shops, industrial buildings) have to issue proceedings in the County Court or High Court to evict squatters incurring the costs of doing so and the time needed to go through the court procedure. The Courts do treat these claims as urgent, nevertheless it normally takes at least six weeks from the issue of the proceedings to the final eviction of the squatters by the Court Bailiff. There have always been squatters living in London and the South East who might be described as “professional squatters”. They usually have a good understanding of their legal rights and routinely put up a

sign up on the premises making it clear that the site has been squatted and that they cannot be evicted without a Court Order. The various squatters’ rights organisations have updated their information, pointing out that commercial properties, such as empty pubs, are not covered by the legislation introduced to protect residential property. The good news is that there is a Court procedure to evict squatters from non-residential premises and it is a relatively quick procedure but prevention is always better than cure. If you are the owner of an empty non-residential property take measures to secure it now. As far as possible, make the building appear occupied and, if practical, arrange for interim occupation. Inspect the premises regularly both internally and externally or employ the services of an agent or security company to check on your behalf. Disconnect the usual services to the building (provided this will not result in the building falling into disrepair) and, if in a remote location, consider blocking vehicular access to the site. There is growing support for the criminalisation of squatting in commercial properties. In the meantime, if you are the owner of a non-residential property that has been taken over by squatters, seek legal advice immediately.

FINANCIAL

LEGAL MATTERS

Nigel Taylor of NJT Accountancy discusses the options you have if you are buying or own a property overseas

The team at Warners Solicitors offer regular expert advice on topics relevant toour everyday lives. This month Karen Cole advises on unexpected weather disruption

MATTERS

I

nheritance tax allowances (IHT) in the UK are by far more beneficial than most European Countries, so why are we not utilising them to their full advantage? If you own a property overseas, especially in Spain, then there’s a ticking time bomb for inheritance tax based on where the property is located. Allowances in Spain are only €15,956 and in the UK it’s £325,000 – a big difference! If you own a property you also have to have a separate Will to determine the beneficiaries of your estate. If an unmarried couple jointly own a property worth €240,000, a surviving partner has to pay €31,000 on inheriting the half share and legal costs would be another €5,000. If a married couple jointly own a property worth €800,000 a surviving spouse has to pay €75,000 on inheriting the half share, making legal costs another €8,000. One way to reduce IHT overseas is to transfer your villa into a UK Limited Company, where you own 100% of the shares. Clever allocation of shares to family members will be able to reduce IHT further in the UK. By transferring your villa into a UK Limited Company there would be no Inheritance Tax to pay in Spain, there would be no Will required for each person, no Spanish legal costs and no non-residency Income or Wealth Tax returns due. The property would be owned and controlled locally by a simple-tomanage and low-cost company. There would also be no taxes to pay in the UK! Transferring the villa into a UK Company is easy and there wouldn’t be any transfer fees/ stamp duty or any local taxes to pay. The UK Company

would then own the property investment in Spain, with the previous owners now being the shareholder/directors of the company. Under the EU Treaty, a UK Company is only taxed in the UK and no taxes are payable in Spain. A UK Company is not an Offshore Company, as offshore companies are charged an annual Tax by Spain of 3% for not being part of the EU. This process can occur if you are thinking about buying in Spain or thinking about moving your property to a UK Company. Even if you have a mortgage in Spain attached to the property you can still request to move the estate, ensuring that the liability will be paid off in full at the end of the loan term by the individual director. We are now in a golden era to move into a UK Company, as it’s difficult to find any capital gain on purchases of property in Spain over the past 10 years; so plan ahead on inheritance tax! You really wouldn’t want to leave a €66,000 bill behind, would you? W

e have all noticed the drop in temperature over the past few weeks, signalling the fact that winter is on its way. It’s probably too early to say if we’ll get extreme snow again this year but it’s always best to be prepared and know your rights in advance. There is an obligation on all employees to get to work and, unfortunately, this is no different in cases of bad weather. As such there is no automatic right for an employee to be paid if they are unable to get to work because of travel disruption following a snowfall. Unless the employment contract expressly contains a provision entitling an employee to be paid on such occasions there is no legal right for the employee to be paid (unless the time spent travelling constitutes working time or in some situations where the employer provides transport to the employees). Workplace Closure However if your employer takes the decision to close the workplace, you will be entitled to receive payment during the closure. This is because employees with contractually agreed hours or salary, who are ready and

willing to work, will have the right to be paid. However, you may be required to work from home or from another location. School Closure and Resulting Childcare Arrangements Employees have a statutory right to take time off where there is an unexpected disruption to the arrangements made to care for a child. Whilst, practically, a school closure is not on a par with a child-minder falling ill, if the closure was at short notice, the situation could be deemed to be an emergency. You would therefore be entitled to take the day off. However, any leave would be unpaid. Paid leave is at the discretion of the employer. Employment Policy Most employers will have a policy in place to deal with adverse weather conditions or travel disruptions. You should make sure that you are fully aware of this policy and comply with its requirements. However, we all know that emergencies do happen and the most important thing to do is to communicate with your employer and let them know your situation as soon as possible.

connections SEVENOAKS’ BEST BITS

amenities SURROUNDINGS HISTORY SECURITY

In the second of our three-part series, Lisa Allen and Sian Lazell take to the streets to discover what you really think about Sevenoaks. Cara McGoogan analyses the findings Following our piece Sevenoaks Time Capsule last month, here at Vine we were wondering what you Sennockians think about our town today. So we conducted a survey around the town and surrounding villages to get some first-hand opinions.

The questions we asked included: • How long have you lived in Sevenoaks/the surrounding area? • Out of 10 how satisfied are you with the high street? • Out of 10 how satisfied are you with the Sevenoaks area? • Out of 10 how much do you engage with your local community? • What is your favourite thing about Sevenoaks? • What would you like to see improved? • Would you ever consider moving away from Sevenoaks? We were lucky enough to find that you Sennockians are very obliging when it comes to talking about your town. Not meeting with continuous hostile faces and downward glances, we are happy to say that the survey was a success.

The Results The results showed that overall Sennockians are very pleased with their home, with the mode score for both Satisfaction with the High Street and Sevenoaks as a Whole being 7/10. Although the mode for Engagement with the Community was only 4/10 that engagement was very interesting. For example, we met people who volunteered at local charities, ran local fairs and offered significant contributions to local schools. Surprisingly, the results didn’t vary significantly with age or gender, as we had expected it might. The average satisfaction overall for under 30s was 6.3/10 and for over 30s it was 6.4/10. Community Engagement saw a similar trend, with under 30s averaging 3.7/10 and over 30s 3.8/10. Overall 76% of people surveyed said they would consider moving away from this area, with the remaining 24% saying they wouldn’t leave Sevenoaks.

was the average satisfaction score given by the people of Sevenoaks to the High Street and town of Sevenoaks as a whole, a result which exceeded expectations

NEEDS IMPROVEMENT Top on the Needs Improvement list was the range of shops offered by the high street. 45% said the high street would be improved with a wider range of shops, especially for young people. 52% of those who voiced this concern specified a desire for better shops for young people, while other criticisms included less coffee shops, estate agents and charity shops. Parking in the town centre was another bugbear, with 35% desiring more spaces and cheaper costs. Coming third was a concern that Sevenoaks doesn’t offer enough for young people to do. Suggestions for how this could be improved included more youth clubs and a better nightlife.

John Stephens Rencraft Having grown up in Cornwall, at the age of 18 I moved to Sevenoaks to find work. I was very lucky that a local careers advisor set me up with a craftsman who had just made her some bunkbeds. Decades later, that craftsman, Nick, is now my business partner! The location of Sevenoaks is great, 10 minutes from stunning countryside and 35 minutes from central London, it has everything you could want within half an hour’s distance. I have three children at local schools and think it’s a perfect place to grow up. I have three children at local schools and think it’s the perfect place to grow up. Richard Elliott Appleby Architects I’ve lived in Sevenoaks all my life and I think it’s a nice place to live, with a rich history and convenient location. As a parent, I think this area offers great schools and facilities, making it the perfect place for a young family. My main problem with Sevenoaks, if pushed, would be the parking in the town centre, but I understand this problem isn’t unique to our town. Richard’s survey results: High Street 6/10 Sevenoaks 10/10

It has taken a long time to makeThe Stag theatre what it is today. Back in 1966 I decided I wanted to set up somewhere that our excellent amateurs could perform. However, it took 17 years to find a site for the theatre and obtain planning permission. In the early days, the auditorium wasn’t pretty, we had no technology and, on the Sunday we opened, I received the license at 5.15pm before opening the doors at 7.30pm. On10 November, 30 years after The Stag opened, Bob Ogley and myself will be holding a talk about the theatre’s history and opening.”

Walthamstow Hall’s new head of junior school

Walthamstow Hall welcomed a very special ‘new girl’ to school in September, new Head of the Junior School Mrs Diane Wood

M

rs Wood, a Durham university science graduate, joins Walthamstow Hall from Spring Grove Prep School in Wye, where she was Deputy Head. She is not the only Wally Hall new girl from the Wood family as she has been joined at the school by her daughters Ellie and Abbie. We spoke to Mrs Wood after her first two weeks at Wally Hall Juniors.

a warm welcome “Welcome to Walthamstow Hall, we know you’re going to be really happy here,” were the wonderfully warm wishes I received from parents, along with bunches of handpicked flowers and beautiful homemade cards from the girls, in my first days in my new job. What a fantastic way to begin my time as Head of the Junior School. Two weeks into the new term these welcoming words are certainly ringing true! Greeting our happy girls in the front garden every morning and talking to parents have been just some of my many highlights since starting here. The support I have been given by my colleagues has been incredible and it’s no wonder the girls are smiling all the time, they’re enjoying school-life to the full. Assemblies packed with celebrating achievements, classrooms filled with enthusiastic interaction, break times enjoyed by friends playing together, lunchtimes offering freshly-prepared food and clubs developing the talents of excited girls. Ellie, Abbie and I have felt like part of this wonderful school family from our very first day.

Getting to know you The girls and I have been getting to know each other. As well greeting them each morning and seeing them at lunch and around the school, I have very much enjoyed visiting the girls in their classes. They have each brought in ‘something special’ from home and told me about what it means to them. Our ‘meet the teacher’ evenings have also been a great way for me to meet and get to know parents.

The support I have been given by my colleagues has been incredible and it’s no wonder the girls are smiling all the time, they’re enjoying school-life to the full

Last week I went on my first Wally Hall school trip, accompanying Reception and their teachers to Knole Park. Even though I’m new to Sevenoaks I didn’t need to worry about getting lost as the girls were very impressive map readers!

During the school holidays the builders made a great start on our new Dining Hall. The site has been excavated, reinforcing mesh has been laid and cement poured to make the new Dining Hall floor. We can’t wait to start eating our lunches in the new building next Spring!

Auditions have taken place for places in our school choir, Cantores, many congratulations to the choir’s new members, we can’t wait to hear you singing.

3 of the Best… superfoods We’ve done our research and found three of the best superfoods to give you a bit of a boost through autumn and winter

Green Tea and Mint Green tea has endless health benefits but one notable attribute for going into autumn and winter is its ability to combat depression in the darker months. Find a green tea with mint for an extra kick against colds, aches and pains and improving sleep.

Top Tips for...

Vitamins and Supplements 1

Vitamins and other supplements are easy to purchase and are generally promoted as improving all different aspects of health but you still have to be careful. Always check with your doctor or pharmacist before stocking up.

2

Never buy off the internet unless the product is from a recognised and certified store – you don’t want anything nasty.

3

Our top herbal remedies for boosting the immune system? Echinacea, Ginseng and Cat’sClaw. Sounds creepy but after all, Halloween’s not far off!

Challenging the Rouxs Michel Roux and his father Albert will this year be returning to their old stomping ground in Shipbourne, to take on a tough challenge cooked up by the locals. The challenge, being held on 17 October, is to create a memorable dinner using seasonal produce from Shipbourne Farmers’ Market. The event is not only to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the market but is also set to highlight the variety of high quality produce available to buy from Shipbourne and the surrounding areas. Aprons at the ready boys! n For more information call 01732 833976 or email bob@lodgeoast.co.uk

Acai Berries Everyone knows that you can start feeling sluggish and lethargic this time of year. Acai berries are great for keeping your metabolism fired up and replacing lost energy. What’s more, harsh weather can leave your skin feeling battered and lacking in hydration. Acai berries’ high antioxidant levels help to protect against the harmful effects of the environment and give your skin a glow.

black garlic It might look a bit unusual but black garlic is a proven health dynamite. Research has shown that as well as giving you a kick after a tough work out and aiding strength, this superfood cuts the life of a cold, staves off winter carb cravings and even protects against unwanted ailments long term, such as arthritis and circulatory problems.

pink week

street party

F

For one week, and one week only, Sevenoaks will be turning pink for Breast Cancer Care. With a street party planned, numerous local shops getting involved and the arrival of the iconic FAB1, it’s sure to be a week to remember

rom Saturday 5 October to Saturday 12 October, Pink Week will be in full swing as Sevenoaks backs this worthwhile charity. Event organisers, Steph Harrison, Hugo Peyrel, Linda Larter, Maxine Chakowa and Carl Dixon have ensured the event has the support of both the Town Council and Sevenoaks Town Partnership but ultimately the event needs the support of you.

Breast Cancer Care This year will be the third annual Pink Week in Sevenoaks which focuses on raising awareness for Breast Cancer Care. Breast Cancer Care provides information and support for those battling the disease and is a wonderful charity that aims to raise people’s awareness. This unique event to Sevenoaks is celebrated within breast cancer awareness month and hopes to attract the attention of the town and those from surrounding areas. Numerous shops and businesses within Sevenoaks, including El Matador, Daniel Jordan London, Sevenoaks Boxing Club and COOK have grouped together to show their support for the charity so it’s set to be a great week full of laughter and support.

Street Party The week will be getting off to a great start with a street party planned for Saturday 5 October, from 6pm 9pm on London Road. Thanks to Hugo Peyrel and his team at El Matador and the upcoming 7 Modern Japanese restaurant, London Road will be closed from the Chocolate Shop up to the crossing at the wine merchants so the residents of Sevenoaks can party safely. This is the first time that the council have allowed London Road to be closed for a street party so let’s make the most of this opportunity. To ensure that street party vibe is present, there’ll be

numerous street stalls providing food, entertainment and fun for all, including make you own sushi, giant paellas and wine and sake tasting outside El Matador and 7 Modern Japanese. With El Matador and 7 Modern Japanese providing food and drink tasting throughout the event there is no chance of you going hungry or thirsty as you party. Other restaurants on London Road will be sure to open their doors to provide further refreshments. As well as the street stalls there’ll be flamenco dancers, Geisha girls, zumba and live music to keep that party atmosphere going all night. Sevenoaks is also in for a treat as Martina Cole and Mark Bannerman will be amongst other celebrities attending the street party to raise the profile of the event. There’s plenty on offer for the kids including sumo suits, face painting and more to keep everyone smiling and having fun throughout the afternoon.

Week-Long Event As well as these two fabulous events there will also be raffles going on round town throughout the week to keep the excitement and interaction there. On 8 October, Rafferty’s will be selling strawberry tea to raise awareness for Breast Cancer Care and Tesco in Riverhead will be having a pink day on 12 October with games, face painting and maybe even a trolley dash!

This year will be the third annual Pink Week in Sevenoaks which focuses on raising awareness for Breast Cancer Care

Famous FAB1 To conclude the week-long event, the iconic pink Rolls Royce FAB1 will be making an appearance in Bligh’s Meadow on 12 October from 1pm - 4pm. There’ll be plenty of opportunities for everyone to have their picture taken with the car and leave a small donation. This infamous car has played host to James May, Gary Barlow, Chris Evans and Brian Cox’s cross country adventure from Land’s End to John O’Groats; hopefully there’ll be several celebrity guests popping up in Sevenoaks as well!

Chevening Walk Grade: medium Distance: 2.5 miles (4km) Duration: 1 hour 10 MINS

This moderate 2.5 mile walk allows you to wander through the beautiful countryside in Chevening and Turvin’s Farm

P

ark near the Church at Chevening. Take the path that leaves from the north side of the churchyard behind some garages along a track between hedges. When you emerge over a stile into an open field, keep to the left-hand edge. After passing a gate on the left, climb a bank and continue to follow the left-hand edge of the field to the corner. Go over a stile onto a steep path between fences through wood to field. Go to the top left corner of the field, turn right along the top of the field and go through kissing gate. Turn right along a broad ride between two woods. At the end of the ride, bear right along the edge of the wood. Do not take the path into

the wood that you soon meet on the right but carry on until you come to a kissing gate by a larger gate offering fine views towards Sevenoaks to the left and Chevening to the right. Go through the gate and keep left following the top of the grassland with the wood on your left. At the end of the woodland, head straight downhill, over a stile and along the left hand edge of a field to the road. Turn right and follow the road extremely carefully to the first bend. Halfway round the bend, take the path on the right (can be muddy after heavy rain). Follow this path in more or less the same direction into Chevening churchyard and back to your car.

Our newest trainer Dan Grasso explains why we overeat and 10 ways to stop

T

he human species has been around for a long time and as far as I know, food has too. It’s only in the last hundred years or so that our problem with food in the western hemisphere has changed from having too little available, to having too much. We now live in a world where you can quite literally eat yourself to death and it’s becoming frighteningly common. It may surprise you to know that many people who die from obesity, actually die from malnutrition. They grow so huge, that the food they consume no longer provides enough nutrients to keep them alive. Diabetes and coronary heart disease are two of the biggest killers in the UK, both of which are directly linked to the overeating of poor quality food. So why do we eat ourselves to death? Foods commonly available to us are filled with artificial sweeteners and processed sugars. Research has shown that these foods stimulate areas of the brain associated with a large dopamine response, provoking a feeling of pleasure that is often addictive in nature. We are also becoming ever more sedentary as the world we live in becomes less and less physically demanding. Physical fitness has been shown to be the single biggest factor in reducing the risk of death, placed higher than drinking, smoking and obesity. So what can you do to combat the effects of overeating?

foods are most filling. Lean meats, fish (or other protein alternatives) and vegetables should be the vast majority of what you eat.

1. Reduce your sugar intake; both refined and natural. Juice isn’t as innocent as you might think. 1-2 pieces of fruit a day is more than enough.

Daniel Grasso BSc Hons

2. Eat food that is filling, nutrient dense and calorie sparse. Highfibre, high-water and high-protein

3. Train regularly at high intensity with intervals. Imagine your body is a car – if you drive slow and steady, you use less fuel. Instead, put your foot down, accelerate, stop and repeat. 4. Build stronger, denser muscles. Strength and high intensity training can leave you burning calories for up to 48 hours after, while your body recovers. 5. Walk to the shops and carry your food home. At the very least, park far away from the shop and walk the extra! 6. Always take the stairs and walk up escalators. 7. Walk more and walk faster. A distance covered faster burns more calories. Multiply this over the course of a lifetime and it is a significant change. 8. If you watch TV, while you do it, ensure you stretch, foam roll or use a recumbent bike and pedal. 9. Accept that life was meant to require physical effort on a daily basis and embrace it. Think long and hard about this one. 10. Love your food but choose wisely – there is a lot of poison on supermarket shelves. Treat yourself about once a week to a small indulgence if you must.

VINE REVIEWS DANIEL JORDAN LONDON

A

This month Lisa Allen was lucky enough to visit Daniel Jordan London to find out exactly why the salon is taking Sevenoaks by storm

high-end salon with exceptionally talented staff, top of the range products and those little added extras which make any hair treatment more enjoyable, Daniel Jordan London really gave me the works. Last month I was fortunate enough to be treated to a half head of highlights and sophisticated re-style.

I was so impressed I thought I’d share my experience with the Vine audience. On arrival at Daniel Jordan London I was warmly welcomed by the staff. Offering a range of complimentary refreshments (including Cava on that specific day!), they made sure my afternoon of indulgence would be as special as possible. I first sat down with Louise, colour director at Daniel Jordan London, who worked with me to decide what the best colour would be to match my complexion. We decided to go for a mixture of light and darker blondes from the unique Milkshake colour range to achieve a sun-kissed yet natural look. Once Louise had worked her magic on my hair colour, I was treated to an indulgent hair wash with shampoo and conditioner products from the Unite luxury range. I was also given an

intensive hair mask treatment to help achieve that soft and silky look. I was lucky enough to have Daniel Jordan himself cut my hair; he began by cutting in a line to create a foundation for strength, before shaping my hair to open up my face and cheekbones. As I have a heart-shaped face (Daniel’s words!), Daniel chose to cut in a side fringe to complement and soften my face. Layers were then put in to create movement, volume and to take away the density of my hair. Daniel Jordan London have a whole range of products to suit all hair types. On this occasion, Daniel finished my makeover with Unite booster volumising spray. Using a combination of Unite second-day finishing product, rollers, hairspray, Unite tricky light wax and an amazing blow dry, Daniel achieved a gorgeous soft and light effect. I am extremely pleased with the restyle and highly recommend this salon to everyone. Why bother travelling to London when you can get the quality of a London hairdresser in Sevenoaks?

KITCHEN SPECIAL

1 Crafting tailor-made kitchens designed to perfectly fit the character of your home, Rencraft walk Vine through their development process

WORKSHOP As well as showrooms in Tunbridge Wells and at Chart Farm near Sevenoaks, Rencraft have their workshops attached to their showroom at Chart Farm. As such, all Rencraft clients are welcome to look around the 12,000 square foot workshops. They aim for their clients to be involved at all stages of their projects, because it’s the small, personal details that make a Rencraft kitchen. The 15 members of the Rencraft workshop include staff as long-standing as 27 years to trainees of six months. This low turnover means that Rencraft can be trusted to do an experienced job with the friendliness of a real family.

3 4

IT’S ALL IN THE DETAILS John Stephens of Rencraft strongly believes that “it’s the details that make the difference between a good kitchen and a great kitchen”. Rencraft are now finding the clocks are being turned back when it comes to the internals of kitchen design; the focus is now more on wooden internals alongside the more traditional metal fittings. All wooden internals in a Rencraft kitchen are handcrafted on site at Chart Farm. This design technique means Rencraft kitchens are built to be durable as well as usable, making them functional spaces that are at the same time aesthetically pleasing.

RAW MATERIALS Rencraft’s speciality is solid wood, hand-painted bespoke kitchens. Sourcing wood globally, they ensure they have the best quality, environmentally friendly wood they can find. Having large quantities of timber shipped in regularly means Rencraft can uniquely offer their clients, who want an oak kitchen for instance, the opportunity to select the type of knot content, whether it is minimal to a heavy character for their kitchen, thus ensuring the end result is personal to them. Rencraft’s supply includes solid oak, tulipwood, walnut and maple, as well as engineered birch and oak.

2 THE FINAL PRODUCT Rencraft has been serving the local community with great kitchens for over a quarter of a century and they continue to impress. Allowing their client’s to trace the birth of their kitchen from the forestry right through to the final family space, they have helped foster many a happy home over the years.

DESIGN STAGE

Rencraft believe it is highly important to listen to the client and what they want from their kitchen. To this end, they work alongside their client’s wishes and dreams, also inspiring and educating them so that together the best kitchen possible can be created. A Rencraft kitchen is designed and built with an evolving brief, following through on their consistent ability to listen, be innovative and ultimately deliver. One key success story of the evolving brief was a client who was renovating and building their dream family home. They came to Rencraft looking for a multi-room scheme including a kitchen. After various meetings it became apparent to Rencraft that with very little change to the internal layout, the kitchen would work better if moved to another part of the house. After more discussions the changes were made and now the client has more than just a kitchen; they now have an open plan kitchen area with a large dining table and light-flooded living space with French doors looking out onto a beautiful garden. Common designs which Rencraft regularly produce include open plan spaces which have seen the kitchen evolve from somewhere to not just cook but to somewhere to eat, be together, entertain, and even work.

5

Amanda, March 2013

“Robert, the designer, patiently revised the kitchen drawings for over two years as our requirements changed. He visited the house on numerous occasions, both during the specification stages and also as we were doing building work to the kitchen in the preparation for the kitchen. We also visited the workshop on a number of occasions to make sure every detail had been discussed and specified. We were never made to feel we were a nuisance or “high maintenance”, although I am sure we were. The kitchen was delivered on time and to budget, with no delays, hidden extras or unwelcome surprises. The after-sales service was as good as the pre-installation service, which is something we have not found in other kitchen companies we have used previously. We cannot recommend Rencraft highly enough.” n You can view Rencraft’s products at their spectacular showrooms in Seal Chart, Sevenoaks and Tunbridge Wells or online at www.rencraft.co.uk.
