£8m lottery award for Knole Park announced

Local author’s new book The Last Enemy is the final novel in Jim Eldridge’s exhilarating series, The Malichea Quest. Aimed at teenagers, this thrilling novel includes mystery, suspense and action: perfect for those who enjoy gripping, addictive reads. What makes this novel even more special is the location of “Hapwood, Ainsworth and Ainsworth solicitors” in Sevenoaks. Reading Eldridge’s novel in Sevenoaks really brings the story alive for local readers. Due to be published on 12 September, make sure you get your hands on a copy! n Available at Sevenoaks Bookshop or online at www.sevenoaksbookshop.co.uk

The Heritage Lottery Fund has awarded £7.75 million to the National Trust at Knole Park as part of a five-year project to renovate the 17th-century estate. The home of the Sackville family, Knole has been a National Trust property since 1946. Emma Slocombe, National Trust curator, commented “since acquiring Knole in 1946, the Trust has faced a running and expensive battle with the effects of rain, damp, mould and insects on the building and its unique collections.” Among this collection is a solid silver table, mirror and candlestick set of which there is only one other in Britain, belonging to the Queen. Not only will this money secure the property’s future, it will also open a whole new attraction to the public. On view for the first time will be servants’ quarters, attic spaces, the Retainers Gallery and one of the last undiscovered long galleries in England. Stuart McLeod of the HLF commented: “the moment you step across Knole’s threshold you can feel the weight of 600 years of history on your shoulders, from the turbulent times of Henry VIII’s reign to the childhood memories of novelist Vita Sackville-West.” For this reason, he said, Knole “could rightly be described as the Trust’s ‘jewel in the crown’.”

Last month two new shops opened on Sevenoaks high street, The Lemon Tree and Mint Velvet. The Lemon Tree Sevenoaks branch brings branded and design-led gifts to the high street, while Mint Velvet offers us a new high-end clothing brand. Joining these in September is the new, designer boutique The Clever Dresser, which is opening on Hollybush Lane.

Seal Know Your Neighbours Group will be holding a Village Fete and Dog Show on Seal Recreation Ground from 12pm to 4.30pm on Saturday 21 September. Among the many stalls and attractions on offer, there will be fairground rides for children, a climbing wall, dance displays and much more. Visit www. sealparishcouncil. org.uk.

On 28 September the Memorial Hall in Otford is hosting the Macmillan Cancer Support Coffee Morning. From 10am to 12pm a spread of homemade cakes, pies, jam, cards and plants will be laid out in the Club Room. In addition there will be a tombola and refreshments, all for the minimal entrance price of 50p. For more information contact Jean Leverett on 01959523404.

All summer Penshurst Place has struggled to capture the perfect aerial shot of their newly designed Maize Maze. Covering 6 acres, the mounted knight was finally captured on camera by local kite enthusiast Tony Makepeace of Brighton Kite Flyers. He attached a camera to his kite to take brilliant photos from 200 feet high. Every problem has a solution!

Great British Walk returns

TV chef cooks up a storm On 30 September The Chequers Sevenoaks will be transformed into a pop up restaurant with TV chef Damian Wawrzyniak at the helm. After embarking on a 36-hour cooking marathon he will steer visitors through an epic ten courses in 3 hours, all created from locally sourced produce. His team, from the Fine Art of Dining and The Chequers Sevenoaks, will be foraging for ingredients in the Kentish countryside, promising to find aged octopus, marinated meats and dandelion. Where these are located in Kent we’re not quite sure, we just hope the ‘edible wild plants’ have no strange side effects. n To book tickets visit lastpopupkent.eventbrite.co.uk

The well-loved National Trust walking festival returns this month. Running from 1 September through to 3 November, the festival gives everyone the opportunity to explore the less-traversed secrets of Kent’s wilderness. Ahead of the festival, the National Trust have revealed some of the region’s best kept secrets, including a former mock-Tudor mansion destroyed in World War II and a well built by social reformer Octavia Hill for residents at Emmetts Garden. There’s a great deal for the children too, with the exciting play area at Chartwell, World War II bomb crater and the Canadian Camp’s den building areas. Looking after 389 hectares of land always open to the public and 1,421 hectares within Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this walking festival couldn’t be situated in a better place. Bringing this natural beauty and history into the present day, they are also linked with Facebook, Twitter and Instagram through #GBwalk.

New 4x4 for Community First Responders

Over August 20 budding actors, screenplay writers and filmmakers gathered at Ightham Mote to create their own film. Starting the week with the scriptwriting process, they had decided on the casting, costume and story by the end of the Monday. They then spent four days shooting their very own film in the passageways, rooms and grounds of the spectacular Ightham Mote. This project was run across three venues over the summer, with filming taking place with two other groups at St Mary Kippington Church and the Stag Theatre. Their films will premiere on 20 October at The Stag Theatre Cinema. Another Halloween-themed filming event will be happening in October so keep your eyes peeleed!

The Community First Responders have been donated a new 4x4 by D G Autos, which means they will now be able to increase the great work they already do to also cover the winter months. The Community First Responders respond to emergency calls alongside the South East Coast Ambulance Service. They are regularly able to arrive at life-threatening scenes before ambulances as they are based so locally. For them, this new 4x4 will mean that their great work can continue in the cold months where previously they were unable to help as much. n For more information or to get involved with the organisation phone 07887 650706

Do you watch Strictly Come Dancing and long to waltz or foxtrot? If your answer is yes, read on! Dance Expressions, a dance school near Sevenoaks, offers adult and child classes for all ages and levels. Excitingly, from 11 September an 8 week course, designed strictly for beginners, will be taking place in Walthamstow Junior School at 7:45pm. Teaching all different styles of Latin and ballroom, they’ll have you getting 10s from Craig Revel Horwood in no time. If your children are interested in dance, there are also children’s afternoon classes beginning from 9 September in Otford Memorial Hall.

Bill Bryson’s back, releasing a travel book with a twist. Not only spanning oceans, his new mission involves travelling decades too. One Summer: America 1927 is a non-fiction tour of America in the year it changed the world. While Europe was in turmoil with the rise of Hitler and the Soviet Union, America was doing so well that President Calvin Coolidge only had to work 4 hours a day. It was the year Alfred Hitchcock released his first film; Al Capone was at his height; and the carvings in Mount Rushmore were begun, America 1927 is one travel destination that no one could refuse. Luckily, until Doc Brown perfects that time machine, we have Bryson’s new book. n Available from Sevenoaks Bookshop from 26 September

n Adult Courses - £58 per person for 8 weeks. To find out more about Dance Expressions or book a class call 01732 835304 or email carol@dance-expressions.co.uk

MUST-TASTE This month Sevenoaks will be hosting its first ever Food Fair, and it’s all free. On Saturday 14 September local artisans, producers, chefs, musicians and more will gather on the Vine Gardens to tantalise your taste buds. Kentish Crafts Fairs have teamed up with the likes of The Sauce Pot, The Chocolate Hut and The Kentish Cider Company to bring alive the magic of food in a beautiful setting. Be sure not to miss the talk on snail farming or the exoticism of Stour Valley Game. n Visit www.kentishfoodfairs.co.uk

MUST-SEE More often than not the musicians we find performing in Sevenoaks are infamous tribute bands or unknown jazz/blues acts; yet on 14 September we are lucky enough to have three original members of The Kinks coming to The Stag Theatre. Mick Avory, Ian Gibbons and John Dalton will be performing classics such as ‘Waterloo Sunset’, ‘Lola’ and ‘You Really Got Me’ under the ironic nomenclature ‘Kast off Kinks.’ Their new vocalist and lead guitarist will by no means be a weak link in the team either, having performed with The Beach Boys and The Noel Redding Band. Tickets £15 standing, £17 seated. n For tickets visit www.stagsevenoaks.co.uk

MUST-LISTEN Coming top of BBC’s ‘Sound of 2013’ list, HAIM have seen huge success this year, and that’s before they’ve even released an album. At Glastonbury they had all of Pyramid Stage on their toes singing along, with onlyone slight slip up when Este’s (bassist) diabetes got the better of her. No fear though, she was back up after a song to a tremendous cheer from the crowd. The three LA sisters Este, Danielle and Alana Haim and drummer Dash Hutton mix up Californian soft rock with R&B, creating a combination that can’t fail to have widespread appeal. Their longawaited album Days Are Gone is released on 27 September. n Call the Compact Disc on 01732740889

A group of young people from Sevenoaks decided that they would like create a magazine, launching in January 2014, just for them and their friends to read and write articles for. It will include articles about what they love and what they’d like to change about their communities, film reviews , tasty recipes and some cartoon strips to name a few! Once a month we’ll be hosting a creative writing workshop at the café, where there’ll be guest journalists offering their time to help young people develop their skills for the magazine and local paper. How would you describe House in the Basement?

NEWS FROM THE MP with Michael Fallon MP

As Parliament returns from its summer recess, it’s worth looking at the challenges facing the coalition government. We live in a global community which is changing around us. In China cities are springing out of the ground; in Brazil favelas are being torn down, replaced by high-rise apartments. Countries like Turkey, Mexico and Indonesia are rapidly industrialising. The lead we had with the Industrial Revolution has long gone – the global race is reality. If we want to hold our place in the world, we will have to earn it. The figures are telling: the EU has 7% of the world’s population, produces 25% of its GDP but finances 50% of its social spending. The economies we are competing against for jobs, goods and services, are younger and lack expensive spending commitments such

as welfare, healthcare and pensions. This means their governments find it easier to keep taxes low and to invest their tax receipts in infrastructure and education, both of which make them more competitive. Reducing the deficit stops Britain from going the way of Greece or Portugal. But to compete globally and provide jobs for children we need a better-educated, higher-skilled workforce. Work has to pay more than welfare; public services have to be more efficient and affordable. The last government clearly overspent but failed on reform. The challenge now is to prepare Britain for international competition. Have a question for the MP? Please send to editor@vinedigital.co.uk

The youth café is a fun, safe, relaxed venue for young people to chill out with their mates. They can grab a milkshake, play some pool, write for the youth magazine or watch live music gigs, played by their friends and up and coming bands. The café is all decked out with colourful furniture, a drum kit, guitars, iPads and friendly, trained youth workers are available to talk to or play a game of pool. So what events have you got planned for the near future? On 9 August we’ll be holding our very first all day indoor acoustic festival, featuring 10 artists for £2 entry and hosted by BBC 6 Music’s Abbie Mccarthy. The event is also being sponsored by award-winning new music blog ‘We Like the Music’. Tell us about a recent trip you’ve been on We recently took a large group of young people to watch staff member Bradley Large play football for Tunbridge Wells at Wembley stadium. The trip was kindly sponsored by The Sevenoaks Rotary Club and enabled young people to go, who wouldn’t otherwise be able to visit Wembley. We also took 12 young people to meet MP Michael Fallon at the Houses of Parliament, where they lobbied him on intelligent and informed questions. Both were incredibly proud moments. n Find out more by emailing info@houseinthebasement.co.uk, visit facebook.com/houseinthebasement or follow them on twitter.com/houseinbasement

emergers of businesses and group reconstructions have often had a stigma – the business world often regards them as the result of failure, but this is not necessarily the case. A strategic break-up of a group comprising different businesses may make good commercial sense, particularly in difficult economic times. It may be that a group has lost synergy between its constituent businesses or maybe one in the group is underperforming and acting as a drag on the development of the others. Perhaps a split will enable the owners to unlock shareholder value and sell off one or more business units that would be unattractive as a group. Maybe different members of a family want to take over responsibility for different areas of the business. These are all positive, constructive reasons for a break-up. There are various statutory methods for demerging a business and each has complex tax treatments. For that reason, it is vital that you consult your tax advisers at the earliest opportunity so that the most

favourable tax treatment can be obtained. One of the most popular demerger options is the “section 110 Insolvency Act” scheme. Do not be put off by the “Insolvency” reference – a S.110 scheme requires the company to be solvent! In broad terms, a S.110 scheme will involve the liquidation of the parent company and the distribution of the different business divisions to new companies. Each new company will ‘pay’ for the transferred business by issuing shares to the parent and the liquidator will distribute those new shares to the original shareholders of the parent, in whatever new groupings or proportions are agreed. This may sound complex, but it simply means that the original shareholders end up independently owning the different demerged business units. Their shares in the parent are effectively “swapped” (via the liquidation) for shares in the new companies. So, if there are commercial reasons to break up your business, and it is solvent, a S.110 scheme could be the way forward.

COMMUNITY STARS Coolings Team This month Vine has not just got one member of the community to praise, but 12 Sevenoaks stars. Twelve work colleagues from Coolings’ garden centre in Sevenoaks bravely undertook the Three Peaks Challenge. As the year 2013 marks Coolings centenary year, they wanted to think of new ways to stretch themselves and the Three Peaks Challenge definitely did this. They conquered Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon in just 24 hours, and remained smiling the whole time – the proof is in the picture! Travelling to three countries in 24 hours would be tiring enough, but having to climb up 11,000 feet (and back down) and walk over 26 miles within that period takes a lot of strength. Coolings have so far raised over £12,000 for Harris HospisCare and are hopeful that they will reach their target of £15,000. Harris HospisCare is a wonderful charity that aims to improve the lives of people who have debilitating illnesses or are nearing the end of their lives, by providing care in their own homes. Thankfully the Coolings team are all fully recuperated and we shall wait in anticipation to see what their next challenge will be. Congratulations on an amazing achievement. n If you would like to donate to Harris Hospiscare then head to-

READERS’ PETS PET NAME: Jack OWNERS: Michelle Newbury LIKES AND DISLIKES: Jack loves getting out of his hutch so he can laze in the sun all day. He’s very quiet and quite happy in his own company and doesn’t mind cuddles when there aren’t a lot of people around. One thing Jack doesn’t like is when Buster the dog sticks his nose up to Jack’s cage to have a good look at him. FAVOURITE TREAT: Dandelions and carrots A WORD FROM THE OWNER: Jack did have a friend called Jill but unfortunately she escaped into the wild. Although they got on, he probably doesn’t miss her too much, as she liked to constantly nibble his ears. Jack is really sweet and likes to be in a calm environment without lots of noise. If mediation fails, inevitably you will be having your day in court. The court prefers to have a single Joint Expert provide evidence (this is an independent, unbiased expert) who will gather evidence and then provide their opinion on the dispute. Evidence that the expert and court will consider will not be limited to Land Registry documents and Ordnance Survey maps, but also include a look at historical evidence such as

original conveyances of the properties, tree lines, ditches and photographs. If you win at court, the judge may order that the opposing party pay a proportion of your legal fees, generally in the region of 70 per cemt. A declaration will also be made as to the correct position of the boundary and this will be filed at the Land Registry. If however you lose, legal fees may be ordered against you. This is when you think back to that missed opportunity of resolving over a nice glass of wine...

Nigel Taylor of NJT Accountancy discusses the alternatives when starting a business

The team at Warners Solicitors offer regular expert advice on topics relevant to our everyday lives. This month, Jon Poole explains the details of Entrepreneurs Relief

A

E

MATTERS round 400,000 businesses start up every year with an estimated third of these ceasing trading within the first three years. So how can you ensure you don’t fall into the failure category? Starting up a new business can be a minefield. Should you trade as a sole trader or as a partnership or company? Start-up costs also require funding, which has to be found and secured. Then there are administrative responsibilities such as bookkeeping and invoice processing. When you register your new business with HM Revenue & Customs you must also decide if you need to register for VAT and PAYE (Pay As You Earn). The VAT registration threshold is currently £79,000 and there’s a range of schemes which may be appropriate for your new business. As for PAYE, you may have heard about the new system that requires employers to report payments to staff in real time, adding another layer of responsibility. But, when you start up, you really want to take your entrepreneurial talents into the marketplace, make a profit and enjoy your new-found freedom. Some think that it’s easy and many of them are the ones that do not make it past the three year milestone. CONSIDER THE FRANCHISE MODEL While there is an upfront cost when buying into a franchise, you have the advantage of buying into the expertise of the franchisor. You will need to research which franchises might be appropriate for you but there are always a wide range available. Franchisors offer various services so arranging to talk with those who are

operating a franchise interesting to you is beneficial. Over 900 franchises are available in the UK, turning over more than £13 billion and employing over half a million people. The British Franchise Association reports that 91 per cent are profitable, meaning nine per cent are not, so planning is essential as your investment is at risk if the business fails. BUSINESS STRUCTURE IS IMPORTANT There are advantages and disadvantages for each trading structure – be it a limited company or an unincorporated business – with respect to control, perception, support and costs. Business structure can also be relevant when extracting money from the business. A limited company is a useful tax shelter but only until you take the money out for personal use. There are different ways of doing this, for example with salaries, dividends, loans or rent. ntrepreneurs Relief (ER) has provided a valuable tax relief when exiting a business either completely or partially since 2008. However, the seemingly simplistic reduction of Capital Gains Tax (CGT) liability to an attractive 10 per cent, often disguises the complexities of the rules and pitfalls for business owners. ER assists an individual disposing of a trading business, not merely selling assets. So it’s only available in respect of gains made on disposal of all or a distinct part of a business (whether a sole trader, partnership or limited company), where that individual has been involved in running the business. It’s essential to consider which of the three mutually exclusive ER categories the disposal falls within and to ensure the specific qualifying conditions can be met. Once a disposal has occurred the chances of retrospectively obtaining qualification are slim. It’s paramount to obtain advice about how to ensure a disposal is properly structured

and qualifiable for ER at least a year ahead. For example, an inadvertent dilution of a qualifying shareholding, an excess of cash within the business or resignation as a director or employee prior to disposal, could all serve to prevent an individual obtaining ER. It can also be valuable to consider alternative approaches to a disposal which could further increase tax efficiency (subject to the situation), taking advantage of the special provisions for spouses/civil partners for instance. It’s also important not to overlook the interaction of ER with Inheritance Tax and Business Property Relief. One can conflict with the other, meaning a short-term saving can be dwarfed by a longerterm liability. So it’s important for a retiring entrepreneur to seek holistic advice on their lifetime tax planning, prior to deciding on an exit strategy. There are numerous technical traps and ever changing guidance from the tax tribunals, yet get the strategy right from the start and the tax savings can be considerable.

Over the next three months Vine will take you through the past, present and future lives of Sevenoaks. In this issue Cara McGoogan, Lisa Allen and Sam Whiffing take you on a journey through Sevenoaks as it was more than a century ago

T

his three-part series on the life of Sevenoaks will look at the history of our beloved town, outlining how it has changed aesthetically and communally. In the next issue, with the help of you readers, we will be running a survey on the current state of the high street, before using this information to compile plans for the future of the town in November. With records dating back to the 13th century, Sevenoaks has a rich history of success. No longer founded upon the presence of seven oaks, residents of Sevenoaks will no doubt be familiar with “the one oak joke”. The number and variety of the eponymous oaks has changed over time, with the original

seven in Knole park moving to the Vine, then down to just one after the Great Storm of 1987. Now the town actually hosts eight oak trees, standing strong in the face of much abuse over the inaccuracy of our name. Home to one of the oldest lay foundations in England, Sevenoaks School, and one of the oldest cricket grounds, the Vine, there is a great deal to be discovered in excavating underneath the surface of our current town. After all, cricket would never have been the same had the three stumps rule not been introduced at the Vine in the early 18th century. Interestingly, Vine cricket club still pay Lord Sackville-West a rent of two peppercorns and one cricket ball per annum for the use of the historic grounds. Some traditions never die!

INTERVIEW WITH RUSSELL HARPER Vine spoke with Russell Harper (pictured below with Roderick Hogarth, Mayor of Sevenoaks), local author and photographer, who recently published Sevenoaks & Around Through Time. A photographic time warp, Russell’s book tracks the changing face of Sevenoaks over the last three centuries. From horse and carriages to Audi TTs, it’s not just architectural changes that this marvel captures. Having found Russell’s book so revealing about the character of our beloved Sevenoaks, we decided to sit down with him and find out about the story behind its making. You’re not a born and bred Sennockian, so how is it that you became so involved with this local project? Where did your inspiration come from? I moved to Sevenoaks from London in 1997 and I fell in love with it immediately. I’m a professional photographer by trade and also have a passion for history. Twelve years ago I joined the Sevenoaks Society and about five years ago I offered to house their archives. Being a photographer, I started sifting through the old photographs and postcards, which got me interested in categorising them and finding out a bit more. This first gave me the idea of creating a photographic history book. Being a freelance photographer

unfortunately put this dream at bay until Amberley Publishing got in touch earlier this year and asked if I’d be interested in creating a Sevenoaks book for their Local History Series. Since then it was all go and from March to now this whole book was made. How was it compiling 180 photographs for the book? How did you choose which images to include and exclude? The archives of the Sevenoaks Society are made up of three large cardboard boxes and about 14 ring binders, which all comes to a lot of photos. The main consideration in image selection was choosing ones which I knew wouldn’t be too hard to replicate. With that in mind the main ones I wanted to include were those which showed drastic change and those where there had surprisingly been no change at all. The book opens with a tour around the centre of Sevenoaks and then moves out to areas such as Otford, Underriver and Chipstead. Choosing which photographs to include wasn’t too hard as I’d already spent years thumbing through them. It was replicating the images that was the time-consuming task. I had to make sure to time my own photography exactly right so that I could stand in the middle of the roads, setting up at completely the right angle, while also producing

FEATURE

photographs with life and energy (or people and cars if you will). Do you have any favourites? My favourite pictures are the ones where you can see the most change. Not only are those interesting and informative, they were the most challenging. Trying to convince people that crossroads have actually replaced the Granada Cinema (p.28), for example, was a hard task. The notable ones for me would have to be Lower Tubs Hill (p.56), the Parade in Riverhead (p.77) and the proliferation of cinemas; where we used to have four and now we only have one.

Now you’re a fully-fledged published author, where are you going to go from here? I’m always occupied with my freelance photography business, Russell Harper Photography. Coming alongside the success of the book, I have reached the semifinals of the Sevenoaks Business Awards in the Home Enterprise category. So I look forward to their awards ceremony on 21 September, which I’m also coincidentally photographing. My sister’s also on to me to do another Local History Series book for her area but I think that idea can wait a bit, we’ve only just launched this one after all! V

VINE MEETS FRANK STANFORD Vine spoke with Frank Stanford, the eldest and longest resident of Bullfinch Close, about his memories of Sevenoaks, his time at Granada cinema and a mystery tunnel on the high street… Frank, how long have you lived in Sevenoaks? I was born in 1927 into a loving family based in Dover. My father was the village blacksmith; in fact he was St Margaret’s last ever Blacksmith. In 1940 we moved to a little village called Five Oak Green where my father continued in his trade. I moved to Riverhead, Sevenoaks, in 1949 with my late wife Dawn and we started our life here. So I have been lucky enough to live in the Sevenoaks area for 64 years.

Sevenoaks is one of the most picturesque and delightfully old-world little towns in England

Where did you work in Sevenoaks? I was an apprentice painter and decorator, and learnt the trade from a young age. I painted numerous shops in the town and became a painter and odd job man for Granada cinema. Then, in 1950, I was employed by Granada Cinema in Sevenoaks as Chief of Staff and publicity manager. I stayed in this position until it closed in 1960; from there I worked as a painter for the Ministry of Defence and finally began working in the security department for Marley Roof Tiles Factory.

Lower High Street, c.1920

Having lived here so long, you must know lots of long-buried secrets about Sevenoaks; are there any you could tell the readers of Vine? Granada Cinema, c.1950

Well I was painting the interior of Rex Bentalls Gentleman’s clothes which used to be next to the 99p store and the manager took me to the end of the shop. He lifted up a trap door with a torch and led me down some steps into a tunnel. We went under the high street and up some steps to the area where WH Smiths now is; however the exit was unfortunately blocked. To this day I have often wondered why the tunnel was there, was it used for smugglers? Who knows, but it truly is a Sevenoaks mystery!

TANNING INJECTIONS EXPOSED

Many of us have tried to achieve that classic St Tropez tan from the bottle, but would you go as far as injecting yourself to attain it? Vine speaks with a local resident who discovered the dangers of tanning injections the hard way

KEMSING WALK GRADE: DIFFICULT DISTANCE: 6.5 MILES (10.4KM) DURATION: 4 HOURS

WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO TURN TO TANNING INJECTIONS?

I

tended to use fake tan every day to achieve the colour I wanted, however I soon became fed up with the smell and mess of using it. I have tried sun beds before but there are of course serious risks associated with them. I love being tanned and felt that by injecting myself I would get the tan I desired in a more convenient way. I was not put off by the thought of injecting myself so ultimately it seemed like a simple solution for what I wanted.

WHAT WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE OF THE INJECTIONS? When you receive the injections from an illegal online store, they do not come with any instructions or guidance. I took to asking other individuals about what quantity to take, but was told different measures by different people. Therefore, the first time I injected myself I accidently overdosed due to the confusion. I instantly felt ill, lethargic and hot and was soon violently sick. I had to spend the night in A&E and I was ill for a further three days. I was really shocked about how dangerous these injections could be, and the upsetting effects they have on your body.

This challenging 6.5 mile walk allows you to explore the beautiful village of Kemsing and offers stunning views across the Weald of Kent and head up hill along another minor road. Continue more steeply uphill as you go straight across at the next junction. You are now on the North Downs Way which you will follow for some time. Turn left at the next junction still following the acorn signs. Cross straight over the minor road and keep heading westwards along the path. Turn left and immediately right again at Cotman’s Ash Lane still on the National Trail. The path loops back on itself around Otford Manor. Where the North Downs Way heads right take the path to the left which runs steeply downhill. At the bottom of the hill keep straight ahead onto a lane. At the end of the lane turn left along the lane into Kemsing Village and retrace your steps to the start.

24 vine September 2013 vinedigital.co.uk

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHERS WHO ARE THINKING ABOUT USING TANNING INJECTIONS?

CUT OUT AND KEEP!

B

egin the walk from the car park in Kemsing Village, and walk eastwards along Heaverham Road. Turn right along a path opposite Church Lane and continue across open farmland towards Crowdleham. The path follows the very edge of the valley along which runs the M26 Motorway. When you reach the road at the hamlet of Heaverham, cross over and continue ahead on the minor road. In Heaverham there is a lovely country pub, The Chequers Inn, where you can pop in for a refreshing drink or bite to eat if you are in need of a break. Where the lane turns sharp left, continue ahead along another path which skirts round the St Clere’s Estate. At the end of the path just before West Yaldham Farm, turn left

No long term studies have been completed on tanning injections, therefore no one knows the lasting effects from the chemicals. There are also a whole host of various side effects that can affect you straight away from high blood pressure and panic attacks. Using a needle from an illegal store isn’t safe in itself, so I can honestly say that it is not worth damaging your health to simply try and achieve a tan through an injection. The fact that you order them illegally online indicates that they are not tried and tested to be used in this country, and I truly hope that people think twice before using them.

I have been suffering with some anxiety and depression over the last year. My GP has recommended exercise. What type/intensity do you suggest? Anon, Sevenoaks If you’ve ever experienced depression you will know just how debilitating it can be. It often makes you so tired you can’t get out of bed, or so anxious you can’t leave the house. Whatever your symptoms are, it can be a challenge to pull yourself out of that dark hole. Your first move should always be to consult your GP, but be aware that there are alternatives to prescriptive drugs, that are certainly worth trying first. Over the past 10-15 years exercise has become one of the most popular treatments for depression and has been proven in some cases to prevent it altogether. The science People often attribute the feeling of elation or ‘runner’s high’ to the secretion of endorphins and other neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine. There seems to be a bit of confusion about these hormones. Endorphins are secreted when the body is under stress or pain and have been linked to feelings of euphoria post-workout. However, endorphin molecules are too large to cross the bloodbrain barrier, meaning they never actually reach the grey matter of your brain to make you feel high. There is no denying however that exercise makes us feel good. So what causes that sought after post-workout buzz? Research suggests that the likely culprits are group a of lipids (and their receptors) known as endocannabinoids. Specifically one called anandamide. Endocannabinoids can reduce feelings of pain, dilate blood vessels and bronchial tubes and induce tranquillity.

The benefits however don’t stop there, exercise is also known to: • • • • • • • • •

Increase your energy Improve your self-esteem Provide a distraction from your worries Improve your overall health and body image Rid you of built-up stress and frustration Improve your sleep Increase self confidence Give you small goals to work towards and achieve Get you out of the house and talk to people

All of which are great ways to combat anxiety and depression. Type and intensity of training: Part of moving past the draining fatigue of depression is taking that first step, whether it’s putting on your workout clothes or going for a walk with friends. Keep it simple to make it easier to get started. Whilst there are no right or wrong exercises, researchers have found that aerobic exercise (lower intensity, jogging walking etc.) doesn’t produce endorphins or endocannabinoids in the same way that heavy weights or intervals do. As I have said many times before, weight/interval training has been proven time and time again to induce the most health benefits over any other form of exercise. Ultimately you should take part in the exercises that you enjoy the most. If you like running, jog on! If you love playing golf, play more! If you like doing boxing classes (especially mine) then get to the gym! n If you are in need of support, come and talk to one of our postgraduate qualified personal trainers, call us on 01732 451 97901732 451 979, email info@ betterbodyshop.co.uk or visit us www.betterbodyshop.co.uk

SINGING IN SEVENOAKS After starting an ‘accidental’ group whilst at Cambridge, Emma Pears has gone on to successfully build an outstanding network of choirs

E

mma Pears recently launched SingingNation, a network of choirs sharing the same vision: they love music and they love people. SingingNation’s aim is for its members to benefit through the power of singing and also to make a difference in the lives of others by supporting various charities along the way. Emma started her first community choir as a student at Cambridge

University. She says, “I invited a few friends over for a sing around the piano and we enjoyed it so much we agreed to do it again. Before long I was running a full-on choir! I realised what an enormous privilege connecting people through singing is and have been doing it ever since.” Committed to supporting local music, Emma has run workshops in more than 30 local schools, conducts the Sevenoaks Junior Proms Choir each year and founded and led the Mill Lane Gospel Choir. In February, Sevenoaks Sings, generously sponsored by Waitrose, saw a fun week of choir rehearsals culminating in a celebratory performance at

Pamoja Hall. Through SingingNation, Emma leads a team of highly skilled vocal coaches, musicians and events managers. All help to facilitate numerous choirs on a weekly basis, provide corporate team building experiences and ensure performance and one to one teaching opportunities are in abundance. With choirs for all ages, a varied range of musical styles, no auditions and no need to be able to read music, SingingNation really does offer something for everyone. n To join a SingingNation choir or find out more, email: jenny@dependant.org, call 07561148084 or visit: www.singingnation.org

COOL

Many of us struggle with stubborn fat that just won’t budge despite attempts at dieting and exercise. The Skin Clinic in Sevenoaks is now offering a revolutionary and innovative new treatment called Coolsculpting to overcome this problem

W

hether it be love handles, tummy bulge or back and bra fat, sometimes it just won’t shift. Coolsculpting has taken America by storm and has over 500,000 successful global treatments behind it and numerous clinical trials. Coolsculpting has now hit the UK in a big way and is being touted as the best and safest non-surgical alternative to liposuction.

8 Weeks After CoolSculpting treatment by Leyda E. Bowes, MD (-6 pounds)

HOW DOES IT WORK? Coolsculpting is a process of controlled and precision cooling that permanently destroys fat cells. This process is called Cryolipolysis. The science behind Coolsculpting was developed at Harvard University and began with the realisation that fat cells crystallise and die if they are selectively cooled. This fat-freezing technology was developed over a period of 15 years and has been rigorously proven and tested. Coolsculpting has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is the only machine that has FDA approval 15% discount with promo for this treatment. FDA code ‘Cool-Vine23’ approval means it has Expires 31 October 2013 been rigorously tested and is deemed to be completely safe and effective. Coolsculpting has been embraced by Surgeons and Doctors alike as a safer alternative to liposuction or body sculpting surgery. Coolsculpting has already begun to assert itself as the leading technology for fat reduction and body contouring and has been nominated in numerous aesthetic awards as the ‘Best Body Treatment’.

GROUNDBREAKING RESULTS Best of all there is no knife, no anaesthesia, no pain, no long-term risk and no down time. You can have your treatment in the space of an hour or two and be back at work or at the gym later in the day. The results speak for themselves and can be as dramatic as surgery. Better still there is no scarring or nerve damage and treatment areas can be repeated until the body is completely sculpted. Results are seen in as little as 3 weeks but continue for 6-8 weeks. Studies have shown that fat reduction in treated areas ranges from 25-45%. There are currently only 23 Coolsculpting machines throughout the UK. The Skin Clinic Sevenoaks is the only clinic in Kent, Essex and Sussex to have this exclusive technology and is delighted to offer it to its clients.

All Coolsculpting in the UK has to be done at medical clinics under the care of GMC-registered Doctors. Beware of cheap imitation cryolipolysis machines that lack the patented technology of FDA-approved Coolsculpting. These are used at your own risk. To find all genuine and registered Coolsculpting clinics in the UK see www.coolsculpting.co.uk. Invest in the best and see what Coolsculpting can do for you.

Starting off at Vidal Sassoon and trained by the likes of legendary hairdresser Debbie G, Ben moved on to Toni & Guy and worked his way up the ranks to become a Style Director and Manager faster than anyone else in the country. Ben’s innovation and natural flair for hairdressing prompted him to set up his own Salon and Spa, confident that he had the skills and business sense to make The Square work. Ever modest of his exemplary record, Ben says: “I just love the creativity of hairdressing and have never been afraid of hard work.” His precision cutting and attention to detail mean that he is quickly building up a vast and loyal clientele in Sevenoaks - discerning customers who appreciate his eye for fashion and knowledge of what will suit them as individuals. DISTINCTION

D

Demonstrating flawless style and providing first class service, Daniel Jordan London is set to be the next big thing in hairdressing

aniel Jordan is a name with a distinctive ring. It speaks of retail refinement, superior consumer style and the kind of bespoke service that discerning people love. Which is precisely the image that Daniel aspires to. As the eponymous creator of a new hairdressing brand, Daniel Jordan is hoping to emulate the success of Nicky Clarke, Vidal Sassoon and other industry greats. Daniel certainly has the personality and the pedigree to bring something new, vibrant and refreshing to the high street salon. So why is Daniel Jordan different? What makes his brand and philosophy – and there’s no better phrase for it – a cut above the rest? First, consider Daniel’s credentials. The 35-year-old enjoyed a stellar apprenticeship and his natural talent was honed by the best in the business. He started at the age of 15 in John Frieda’s Mayfair salon, learning his craft from Clifford Stafford, who trained many of today’s elite hairdressers. Nicky Clarke spotted his talent and took him on as his assistant and then made him right-hand man. In his 20-year career, Daniel has worked on both sides of the Atlantic and has been eagerly sought by film stars, royalty, media personalities and other A-list clients. Pierce Brosnan, the Duchess of Kent, Paula Yates and Patsy Kensit are just some of the many celebrities whose hair has passed through his creative hands. Daniel was responsible for makeovers on ITV’s This Morning and has worked on The X Factor live finals. He

has also undertaken numerous sessions for Tatler, Vogue, Marie Claire and helped Nicky Clarke to launch his hair care products in the United States. While working with Nicky he assisted Guido Paulo, the fashion session guru, on catwalk shows for Louis Vuitton, Givenchy and Alexander McQueen. Daniel has grown up with glamour hairdressing at the highest level and has recently undertaken one-to-one instruction with the world’s best former Vidal Sassoon trainers to fine tune his technical ability. His vision is to marry the glamour of the Mayfair salons with the avant garde technical brilliance of Vidal Sassoon. The result is his unique approach; traditional feminine glamour and softness underpinned by creative and technical excellence, with exceptional attention to detail. “I firmly believe that every woman, regardless of background or budget, deserves to feel beautiful and special,” says Daniel, “and that modern hairdressing means being individual rather than uniform.” “We’ve created a luxurious and spacious regency feel in the new salon, and we offer a quality and service seldom seen today. Because I hate the conveyor-belt mentality of some salons, our clients enjoy a full hour of dedicated service. Anyone who leaves our premises will not only experience the difference, they’ll feel it as well.” Helping Daniel in the Sevenoaks salon are John Gooderham and Louise Green, both trained from an early age with John Frieda. Daniel quickly recognised John Gooderham’s creativity and service ethos – central features of the Daniel Jordan brand – while Louise has a rare gift for colour and an exceptional eye for detail. As for products, the salon offers a wide range from Unite styling products with colour supplied by milk_shake. The Sevenoaks salon has already made a big impact – particularly through word of mouth. “Not only have we had tremendous repeat business in the first month,” reports Daniel, “new clients are coming to us because of recommendations”. That may well be the essence of the Daniel Jordan brand: an experience that’s not only worth repeating, but also one you feel compelled to tell others about.

Pierce Brosnan, the Duchess of Kent, Paula Yates and Patsy Kensit are just some of the many celebrities whose hair has passed through his creative hands

THE CLEVER

Vine speaks with fashion guru Sophie Carson to find out more about her new Sevenoaks boutique The Clever Dresser

WHAT LED YOU TO OPEN THE CLEVER DRESSER? After studying at St Martin’s College, I went on to train as a fashion buyer for Harrods. From there I worked for renowned couture fashion houses in both London and Milan, and have worked very closely with Selfridges and Harvey Nichols as head of retail operations manager. Just before having my first child I was store director and head buyer for Versace London. Having have worked in the industry for over 20 years, the most natural course for me was to open my own boutique: The Clever Dresser.

WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE HOLLYBUSH IN SEVENOAKS AS THE LOCATION FOR YOUR FIRST STORE? Hollybush in Sevenoaks is an up-and-coming area, it’s got that real Hoxton, Marylebone Road feel to it, with great little businesses bubbling away. It was perfect for me to locate my trendy boutique with a London feel among this eclectic mix of shops. I have very close ties with key people in the industry so was able to pull some sought-after high-end brands such as DVF, Issa, Milly, Halston and AG Jeans. These will of course be mixed with affordable fashion lines. This store is for everyone and we aim to go above and beyond with customer service, free styling service and out of hours service comes naturally.

in particular will cause a frenzy in Sevenoaks. Come on board with us through Facebook, Twitter and email; we will keep you informed of up and coming lines and events that will be taking place.

COULD YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR AUTUMN/WINTER STOCK? We have some really good looks for the season mixed with some more classic ones. I’m hard pushed in choosing my favourites, but if I had to I’d say I love the everyday 2nd Day knitted gilet worn with AG Jeans and Ash trainers. The Muubaa leather jackets are also an absolute must! For the classic look, we’ve got a silk jersey fitted dress which can be worn day or night, there’s a reason the A-Listers love this brand, your turn heads! Halston has gone a different direction, with silk shirt dresses and shirts worn with loose trousers for a classy cool look. We also have the DVF mid-collection arriving in November, which is fantastic, one of her strongest collections.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU WHEN BUYING IN NEW CLOTHING? I am so lucky to work with brands that excite me and that continue to be innovative. We have a few new brands coming on board for Spring/Summer and one

n The Clever Dresser Grand Opening will be on 7th September, followed by a week of champagne celebrations at the shop. Make sure you don’t miss it! For more information visit www.thecleverdresser.com

A Cause for Celebration

O

ne year on since they opened, Kip McGrath in Sevenoaks has welcomed over 100 children ranging from the age of 6 to 16. Inspiring every pupil needing extra support and guidance, Kip McGrath have already encouraged many pupils and enabled them to be more in tune with their school work.

HOW ARE THE SESSIONS RUN

?

The children are welcomed by fully qualified, CRB-checked teachers to sessions involving a maximum of five children, the perfect size to get everyone engaged and learning. Each lasting 80 minutes, six to eight different tasks are completed per session using a mixture of computer, worksheet and text book activities to keep the interest and focus levels high. Students can enrol in specific sessions once or twice a week during term times, or attend holiday sessions to keep their level of understanding consistent.

The free assessment Kip McGrath offers enables the staff to tailor their programme towards each child. Impressively, Kip McGrath also adapts the sessions each week to cater for new developments. The programme INSIGHT is the perfect online learning platform to allow teachers and students alike to clearly see how the students are performing.

?

WHAT IS THE SYLLABUS

Kip McGrath’s syllabus matches the National Curriculum; however they are always there to fill in any areas that the children have difficulty with. Maths and English are priority topics within the sessions, with Kip McGrath working to bring all pupils to national expectation. They also help with exam preparation for GCSE, Common Entrance and 11+. For GCSE students, they follow the syllabus for their specific exam board and use practice papers to help familiarise them with what is required. Kip McGrath revel in challenging their pupils if they are already working at national expectations, and aim to extend their learning beyond what is expected. n For more information email sevenoaks@kip-mcgrath.com or call 01732 453657 n Kip McGrath are proud to announce they are Senior Sponsors of Sevenoaks Rugby Football Club. hankfully, the (not-so) good old days of a ‘stiff upper lip’ are largely a thing of the past as talking ther apies are consistently shown to be the most useful forms of supp ort for any of us struggling with life’s myriad difficultie s. And, whilst the Victorians believed that ‘children should be seen and not heard’, in 21st century Britain we have a growing understanding of the value of listening to our children and young people. T2T4C therapists are a team of eight highly experienced, qualified and approachable counsellors, each with an in-depth understanding of how to wor k with children and their families. At T2T4C they know how difficult it can be to ask for supp ort and how vital it is to get it right. Getting it wrong can be expensive , frustrating, unhelpful and potentially damaging. Thanks to their comprehensive support, parents, schools and GPs are all turning to T2T 4C, safe in the knowledge that they will receive expert support tailo red to their individual needs. For the past 20 year s they have been well known for their wor k with children, young people and their families, as well as being the commissioned service for Children and Adolescent Mental Health Services. This support is now being exte nded further from their inviting and comfortable therapy room s in Sevenoaks and include: • Counselling for children, teenager s, individuals, couples and families.

EDUCATION SPECIAL

An exciting new chapter for ST MICHAEL’S PREP SCHOOL Cara McGoogan visited St Michael’s Preparatory School to meet the new Headteacher Jill Aisher on her first day in the new office. What an office it is too! As spectacular as the views from the office are, that wasn’t what attracted Vine’s attention

J

MEET JILL AISHER, THE NEW HEAD OF ST MICHAEL’S PREP

ill is the first female Head of St Michael’s Prep School since it opened as an orphanage for boys in 1872. Talking with Jill at the beginning of this new chapter, for her and the school, showed us that St Michael’s Prep has a lively, forward-thinking, friendly future ahead . Coming into a school as a new teacher, or Head, can be just as daunting as entering as a new pupil. How has St Michael’s Prep welcomed you? When I came here for the first time I was absolutely tickled pink by how articulate and confident every single child was. I instantly noticed that they were very curious and interested in absolutely everything. One conversation I remember was with a Year 3 girl about sport. She was explaining how you got into a team and I said “in my school girls and boys play football together”. To which she replied sternly “well I hope you’re not going to do that here!” I was just making

conversation, but I was delighted by her confidence and honesty. “It’s one of the reasons I was attracted to the school; bright confident, hard-working pupils. Add to that masses of parental support, incredible facilities for sport and music and a state-of-the-art Pre-Prep building, academic ambition and an outstanding inspection because of the excellent teamwork and dedication of staff and you have a recipe for a truly special place to come and work. There’s a wonderful family atmosphere here. It’s also important to me that this school is a Christian foundation.” Have you got big plans for St Michael’s Preparatory School? I think the school’s got big plans for me! St Michael’s Prep is a very strong community, a friendly place in a special location. It’s already achieved “outstanding” in every category in its last Independent School’s Inspection (ISI). That’s a bit daunting in some ways, but you always have to ask yourself “What can be improved?” And hopefully, even in an “outstanding” school, that is still “something”. I’d like to hear what the children want to do; I’m going to review the whole curriculum with the children, the staff and the parents. I don’t want to dictate the school’s future; of course I have things I’m interested in but I want to hear other people’s ideas too. It’s not just my future we’re looking at here, but the future of everyone involved with the school, so I’d like them to all be involved in the processes of constructing that. Will you be doing any teaching? Oh yes, I’ll be teaching French to Year 7, holding assemblies and doing things with the Pre-Prep. I’m passionate about languages which I suppose goes hand in hand with my interest in having a global education. I have four main passions which I bring and will want to explore with the community.

40 vine September 2013 vinedigital.co.uk

INTERCONNECTIVITY IN THE GLOBAL WORLD I’m interested in teaching children that they’re living in a very big world in which everything is connected, making sure that they feel connected to things that seem isolated from them. Although this isn’t a Montessori setting, I’ve elements of this in my background. One of the first things children learn in a Montessori Nursery is that we are part of a universe; they teach all the names of the planets and that there’s a solar system. Then they travel down towards the earth and teach about land and water, the countries of the world, and so on before reaching you as a person and your place in this. I think we have to teach children about the world as a whole, about the impact of different countries upon one another and the relationships between them, because everything we have in today’s society has had contact with another country and culture. We owe it to ourselves to teach the children about this.

TECHNOLOGY IN LEARNING I enjoy exploring ways in which IT can serve, expand and refine children’s learning. For example, if you take an electronic dictionary app into a classroom it doesn’t require the child to know the exact spelling of a word straight away. Rather, when you start to type it works with you, meaning that if a child can read they can find the word more quickly than in regular dictionaries. I’ve found this process accelerates learning.

“PUPIL VOICE” I’m dedicated to engaging all children with their immediate context, making sure they are all an integral

Talking with Jill at the beginning of this new chapter for her and the school showed us that St Michael’s Prep has a lively, forward-thinking, friendly future ahead

part of the structure and running of the school they attend on a daily basis. This might ultimately mean, for example, being involved in the interview process for all new staff, with the School Council writing questions for each role.

ENVIRONMENT My passion for teaching pupils their responsibility within the world they live also extends to the environment, including things like recycling. I was disappointed when I moved into my cottage in Shoreham to find out that I could not recycle as much as I could up in London. We should be more conscious of it, even more so in this setting! I’m hoping that the children and staff at St Michael’s, myself included, can all work together to explore whether we’re as “Green” as we should be given the environment we’re sitting in. I’m looking forward to meeting all of the pupils, parents and staff at St Michael’s Prep School. If any Vine reader would like to visit us we would be very happy to welcome you to our school.

KING’S ROCHESTER

Fusing tradition with innovation A school built upon the solid foundations of tradition and heritage, King’s Rochester’s culture of innovation and development creates strong relationships within a broad community

K

ing’s Rochester, the oldest choir school and the second oldest school in the world, is a very special place. Occupying a majestic and unique site between Rochester’s ancient castle and cathedral, overlooking the River Medway, its imposing and ancient exterior belies an unexpected warmth in a school whose traditions are centuries old. Founded in 604, King’s has evolved into an outstanding 21st century school for 3 to 18-year-old girls and boys with excellent facilities at all levels. It is a school which prides itself on the ability of its staff to bring out the best in every child and to help them achieve their maximum potential, not only academically but also in all other areas of school life. Talents and strengths are celebrated and supported – wherever they lie. Successful children are happy children and King’s is a very happy school.

ISI COMMENDATION At the end of the last academic year the Independent Schools’ Inspectorate (ISI) rated King’s Rochester “good” or “excellent” in every area across King’s Senior, Preparatory and Pre-Preparatory Schools. The ISI’s report praised the Pre-Preparatory School as “excellent” in all categories, including the “curriculum,” “quality of teaching,” “pastoral care” and “leadership and management.” The ISI compliments King’s that “from the youngest to the oldest …. pupils exude

confidence and happiness because of the excellent provision the school makes to promote their personal development.” This success is not restricted to the School, but also encompasses the increasingly popular King’s Rochester Nursery. This has grown as a result of “Toddler Time,” held every Wednesday afternoon during term time from birth to 4 years old. King’s is an educational Nursery, offering a well-balanced Early Years curriculum, which focuses on education and play as a springboard into full time education. As a result, early registration is now essential. King’s also organises fun, themed events for all preschool children to give them an idea of life in ‘big school. These have included “Under the Sea” and “Jungle Jamboree” activities in the past and these fun afternoons are held in the November prior to joining Reception in the following September. Great relationships do not just exist within the walls of King’s. The school prides itself on its relationship with the wider community.

SPORTS CENTRE King’s Rochester’s commitment to innovation and working with the local community is clear from their recent purchase and half million pound refurbishment of the formerly named, council-run Stirling Sports Centre. The Centre is open seven days a week

to the public as well as being used by the school, with facilities and classes open to all local residents. Improvements to the renamed King’s Rochester Sports Centre are continuing this autumn and will include new Technogym equipment and the first phase of a major tennis court re-build. During the summer holidays the team ran successful activities clubs for children aged 6-15 and tennis coaching. To mark the opening of the King’s Rochester Sports Centre last year, Principal Jeremy Walker introduced a wide range of Sports Scholarships available to talented sporting 11, 13 and 16 year olds. JOBS NETWORK

But, as a high-achieving, broad-ability school we are just as interested in the value we add to a pupil’s results. Our recent inspection report commented that our “pupils’ academic results are achieved due to the exceptional quality of the relationship with their teachers”. This has, again, been borne out by an even better set of results than last year.” And GCSE pupils at this broad-ability school achieved an impressive 43% A*/A and 70% A*-B grades in 2013, which makes this year’s results some of the best in the last 5 years. Mr Walker commented: “Our hardworking pupils and their teachers deserve hearty congratulations again this year. Our 2013 results have witnessed a clear increase in the numbers of A* and A grades achieved. This is particularly pleasing in a year when the press has reported that GCSE results could be affected by changes to exams with top grades becoming more difficult to attain. I am delighted to report that we at King’s Rochester have noticed no such trend. Well done to all concerned!”

With the launch of the school’s online careers helpline, Jobs Network, many new initiatives are proving to be of great use to the Sixth Form. CV-writing seminars and career lunches with a professional where the pupils can talk informally about a variety of professions and start building contacts are now obligatory for every sixth n For more information call 01634 888590 or visit www.kings-rochester.co.uk former. Call 01634 888590 or email ANOTHER TOP-SCORING admissions@kings-rochester.co.uk YEAR! There were smiles all round again at King’s Rochester when A Level and GCSE envelopes were opened in August. 33% of all A Level passes were in the coveted A* and A brackets, with 10% at A*. 66% of all results were at A* to B with the Grammar Stream (top 40% of the cohort) attaining an average of 464 UCAS points (where an A* is worth 140 points). Results at King’s are even better than last year’s high standards and particularly impressive in the light of a drop in grades across the country. As a consequence, King’s pupils are heading off to some of the best universities in the country with 43% going to the Russell Group and over half to the Top 30 UK Universities (The Sunday Times League Table). Principal Jeremy Walker who has just completed his first year at the helm of King’s, said, “This has been another impressive year for our A Level results.

COMBE BANK Looking forward to the future Headmistress Jane Abbotts and head girl Niamh D’Arcy reflect on Combe Bank Senior School’s successes of last year before looking forward to the exciting year ahead After a great year for the school, Vine catches up with Combe Bank headmistress Jane Abbotts to hear her highlights and how she’s going to make next year even better. What have been Combe Bank’s highlights of this past year? We’ve had our most exciting extracurricular year, with sailing, scuba diving, Tae kwondo and Mandarin being introduced. Our equestrian team has also had a very successful year and we were pleased to host the West Kent Pony Club event for the first of many times. Our yearly performance at The Stag Theatre was also a sold-out marvel. This year two separate casts performed Alice the Musical to different audiences. A whole school production in every way, among the stars of the show at The Stag were ‘Young Alice’ Maisie Grainger, ‘Older Alice’ Susie Kitto, ‘Cheshire Cat’ Georgie Spiteri and the ‘Caterpillar’ Imogen Evans. Last year also saw the introduction of Photography A level and next year we’re launching Media Studies AS/ A2, supported by a brand new media suite. Helping to launch this new creativity at Combe Bank, Vine themselves paid us a visit. They ran a series of workshops developing the students’ social networking skills, integral to

career opportunities in today’s culture. We also hosted a very successful Grapevine, which we hope to do again next year. We hear you had a very special visitor at your prize giving? Indeed! We were delighted to welcome Dame Kelly Holmes to Combe Bank for our Senior Prize Giving Event. With her thoughtful and positive personality she gave our rising stars motivational advice, before silencing the audience with recordings of her double gold medal achievement at the Olympic Games. After the prize giving, Dame Kelly joined us for a reception on the lawn, having her photo taken with many a star-struck girl. I am proud that this year the girls have worked hard to develop their academic abilities to the highest standard while also discovering new talents and nurturing existing ones. Combe Bank is well known for being a school community in which girls succeed. This year has been no exception and we look forward to a great year this September. What do you have planned for next year? Our most important aim for this year is to build on experiences of leadership and teamwork so the girls play a positive role in the community and achieve successful careers. We are building in a planned programme that encourages the girls to take on practical leadership and teamwork roles, including contributing to charity and adding to the smooth running of the school by receiving visitors or planning events and trips. Art is very important to us as a school, so we are excited to be working with the Royal Academy who will

MEET THE HEAD GIRL Name: Niamh D’Arcy Age: 17 Studying: Government and Politics, Philosophy and Ethics, English and Business Studies Achievements: Just finished Gold DofE in the Brecon Beacons Aims for this year: I love Combe Bank and I’ve always had such a good experience here. I want it to continue to be a really friendly school for everyone and do as much as the girls ask me to. One of the things I’m going to do to strengthen the Combe Bank family is hold a school sleepover for the lower years. Sixth formers are going to New York at the beginning of February which I’m hoping will help strengthen the ties between upper and lower 6th. I’d also like to improve the peer mentoring service so it is an integral part of Combe Bank’s school experience. Aims for the future: I want to study politics at university and then maybe work for a big charity, or have my own business.

DATES FOR THE DIARY be offering a Life Portraiture Workshop for KS2 pupils on 14 November and an A Level Life Drawing Class on 16 January. We also nurture creativity through the House system (Argyll, Connelly, Leeds and Mond) and our ‘Spirit of Chartwell’ competition. New talents are discovered every time and the event provides another way of working vertically across age groups together. Next year Combe Bank celebrates 90 years since it was founded by the Convent of the Holy Child Jesus and we are celebrating this by making virtual links with sister schools in New York, working on projects together and sharing information, which will no doubt produce exciting outcomes. And lastly from us, we hear you have the best school dinners around, would you be able to tell us a bit more about this? Our amazing chef Ian Lettington and his team prepare a wonderful range of freshly cooked dishes every day. The girls and staff enjoy a range of healthy, exotic foods: kumquats, star fruits, artichokes and olives appear alongside other familiar dishes such as chicken and ham pie followed by rice pudding with blackcurrant coulis. The key lies in his superb skills and inventiveness, together with genuine choice so that girls from the age of four are encouraged to build appetising meals for themselves. As a result every girl eats in school, no packed lunches here!

RUSSELL HOUSE Celebrating 75 years This September marks the start of a memorable year at Russell House with celebrations in prospect for the school’s 75th anniversary

CAUSE FOR CELEBRATION Russell House is in the habit of celebrating successes. For the second year in a row, it has recorded a 100% pass rate among the children who sat the 11 plus exam. Then, this summer, the Early Years classes were rated ‘Outstanding’ across every category by the Independent Schools Inspectorate. During the year ahead, the school has celebrations of a slightly different nature in prospect. It is marking its 75th anniversary, a great achievement for a school which started with seven pupils in a family home in Kemsing.

A WORD FROM THE HEAD “Our history is important to us, because it helps to define the unique qualities of the school,” explains headmaster Craig McCarthy. “Russell House has changed throughout its history to ensure it continues to prepare children for fulfilling and happy lives. At the same time, the stable backdrop of our safe, friendly environment has remained constant, enjoyed by each generation of pupils and teachers.”

HOW IT ALL BEGAN Russell House was set up by Mrs Nellie Baker in 1938 as a means of supporting herself following the death of her husband, Russell. Encouraged by neighbours who sent their children to her school, she opened with seven pupils – her two sons, three more boys and two girls. The school thrived and, within a few years, had outgrown the family home. A local doctor helped Mrs Baker to move to its current site opposite Otford station in 1946. A school photograph from 1957 shows nearly 100 children, five teachers, two kittens and a dog. Another from the time shows the school choir proudly holding a trophy, won at the Sevenoaks Three Arts Festival. The school underwent further dramatic expansion

under Mrs Elisabeth Lindsay who took over the school in 1984. She instigated a succession of major building projects and, within two years, opened the school to boys as well as girls, making Russell House the first independent school in the area to become co-educational. Its academic reputation blossomed and, with the arrival of Mrs Alison Cooke, first as Director of Music and later as Head, became equally well known for the quality of its music.

BACK TO THE PRESENT DAY Today, a school photo shows twice as many children as were photographed at the school 50 years ago, and significantly more staff. Reflecting on the school’s lasting success, Mrs Cooke who retired last year, says: “Perhaps it is the special relationship between teachers and pupils; the size of the school or its success at secondary school transfer. We have always been blessed with wonderful support from parents. But perhaps the most important thing is that the school is happy to be itself. It was, and is, quite simply unique.” It is a rich legacy upon which current headmaster Craig McCarthy is building, “There is no doubt that Russell House offers a very special prep school experience. Our boys and girls thrive in the family atmosphere, as we nurture their natural curiosity and critical thinking skills in preparation for their own futures.”

The wealth of activities they offer outside of the curriculum sets the boys up very well for future life and university, giving them independence to organise their time and work effectively

A

n impeccable senior school, Tonbridge School has been educating boys in the south-east for 460 years. Through their intimate class sizes, school-wide ethos of high achievement and pastoral care tailored to the personal needs of each boy, Tonbridge shines on every level. Entering Tonbridge at 13 for their GCSEs or 16 for Lower Sixth, the boys are immediately integrated within the school community. Day and boarding pupils are absorbed within the Tonbridge lifestyle which garners academic, athletic and artistic excellence six days a week. By maintaining a traditional boarding timetable, with lessons on a Saturday morning, Tonbridge makes time for a full games programme every Saturday afternoon and Community Action every Wednesday afternoon. The wealth of activities they offer outside of the curriculum sets the boys up very well for future life and university, giving them independence to organise their time and work effectively. Day boys and boarders alike have long, busy days which include sport, drama and community service in addition to the standard curriculum.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE In 2012 Tonbridge School sent an unsurpassed 75% of their boys to Russell Group universities, whereas the national average across all schools is only 16%. An average of 36 boys a year win places at Oxbridge which corresponds to almost 25% of each year group. In addition to those going to Russell Group universities, many others move on to the best universities around the world, including Harvard and many other US universities. A significant factor in this higher education success is the academic excellence which Tonbridge School ensures. Over the last three years 78% of all A Level results have been A* and A grades, with 37% A*. Equally, at GCSE 90% of all grades achieved were A* or A in 2012. Tonbridge’s intimate teaching methods promise these results year on year. With an average of 9 pupils per A Level class and a maximum of 12, classes are conducted with little distraction and close pupilteacher contact. In addition, Tonbridge boys have access to a great amount of one-on-one teaching and support. Regular ‘Pursuits Periods’ during the school week allow boys the opportunity to meet individually with teachers from any department. These sessions can include gaining advice and feedback, as well as discussing any interests from the curriculum which the boys might want to explore in further detail. Preparing the boys for achieving highly at Russell Group and Ivy League universities, Tonbridge promises a great start in life.

MUSICAL GENIUS

PASTORAL CARE As important as the academic staff in the achievement of these high grades and university offers, is the extensive pastoral network at Tonbridge. Their House System allocates both day boys and boarders to a house led by a housemaster and a team of tutors. These masters and mistresses work closely with boys and parents, providing continuity of care throughout each boy’s time at the school. With their own longstanding knowledge of university applications and of each boy, housemasters offer a great deal of support and advice to the members of their house. The full-time university and careers adviser, Mrs Anna Rogers, is also an integral part of the application process. Dedicated and equipped with a wealth of experience, her work with each boy promises that they all reach their desired end point.

SPORTING PROWESS Tonbridge’s success is not limited to academic excellence, as exemplified by their range of great sporting facilities. For the last two years the Australian athletics team have trained in Tonbridge School; last year for the Olympics and this year for the World Championships in Moscow. Among these athletes was 100m hurdle London 2012 gold medal-winner Sally Pearson. With these professional-standard facilities it’s no wonder that the boys of Tonbridge are superb athletes. This year the rugby team were runners up at the Roslyn Park 7s Festival, the top 7s rugby tournament for schools. Last year the football team were the 2012 Lent Term Independent Schools’ League Champions and the cricketers were the runners up in the Lord’s Taverners’ Under 15 Trophy. With 150 acres of land to play on, Tonbridge provides sporting opportunity for all, as well as excellence, with over 30 teams regularly taking to the fields on Saturday afternoons.

Close to 50% of the Tonbridge student body play at least one musical instrument. An all-Steinway school, they do not renege on nurturing musical talent. The world-famous rock band, Keane, came out of Tonbridge School and they continue to encourage excellence. Vincent Kehoe, 2013 leaver, is one of several Tonbridge boys playing in the National Youth Orchestra, with whom he played the double bass at the Queen’s Coronation Gala in July. To thank for a great deal of this talent is the impressive musical staff at Tonbridge, one of whom, organist Julian Thomas, gave a recital at Westminster Abbey in July. The recent orchestral tour to Hong Kong, which included a recital in St John’s Cathedral, demonstrated the outstanding opportunities which are constantly available to Tonbridge musicians.

ASTONISHING DRAMATICS

50% of the Tonbridge studentbody play at least one musical instrument. An all-Steinway school, they do not renege on nurturing musical talent. As such, the world-famous Keane came out of Tonbridge School

Being home to the 370-person capacity proscenium arch E.M. Forster theatre, Tonbridgians perform over 10 plays a year, with opportunities for every age group. This year the highlight was the world’s first ever amateur staging of STARLIGHT EXPRESS by the lower school. It took the boys 6 months of rollerskating lessons to perfect their technique, but it was worth it for the flawless performance they delivered on the night.

COMMUNITY ACTION In addition to their life within the school, all Tonbridgians are encouraged to give back to the community. As such there is a highly active Community Action Programme on a Wednesday afternoon. From visiting primary schools to old people’s homes these activities ensure the boys grow into well-rounded and socially conscious young adults. The height of Tonbridge’s community engagement comes once a year when they open their doors to over 1000 primary school children who can use their facilities for a whole day. The boys organise and host the children for the whole day, always ensuring everyone has a great time. n For more information about Tonbridge School and for open day dates visit their website at www.tonbridge-school.co.uk

The Granville FAMILY This month Vine takes a look at The Granville School for girls to explore how they achieve that warm, family-like environment that’s present from the moment you step into their grounds

T

he Granville Preparatory School in Sevenoaks is home to 197 pupils ranging from the age of three to eleven. They welcome boys aged three to four years old; however, the school is predominantly composed of girls aged three to eleven. Within this vast array of children, the utmost importance is placed on encouraging the different year groups to interact with one another and treat each other as one big family. This overwhelming sense of unity and support makes it no wonder that the girls shine personally as well as academically.

A UNITED HOUSE IS A HAPPY HOUSE Long gone are the stereotypical images of ‘scary older girls’ at The Granville; here the pupils cherish helping each other out and enjoy the chance to learn together. From Reception all the way to Year 6, the girls are divided into four houses: Knole, Hever, Penshurst and Chartwell. These houses are the perfect way to allow the girls to create those strong bonds that will benefit them throughout their time at The Granville and beyond. Recently, the individual houses had the chance to visit their school’s namesake. This trip gave the girls a perfect opportunity to enhance their relationships outside of the school boundaries. As well as trips, the different houses regularly work together to produce charity events. Recently, Knole raised a significant amount for Think Twice by having a ‘wacky hair day’ and jam jar tombola; Hever had a toy sale which raised money for the Hedgehog Children’s ward at Pembury Hospital; Penshurst completed sponsored jobs to raise money for Guide Dogs; and Chartwell did an Easter Fayre for Comic Relief and Kent Air Ambulance. Events and trips like these instil a message of family and unity in the girls from an early age which is undoubtedly important for their development as confident young individuals.

HAPPINESS EQUALS SUCCESS The Granville is aware of the many advantages that come as a result of their unified atmosphere. Year after year, they welcome exceptional academic results from the girls. They always have a notable success rate at 11+ to both grammar and independent schools and this year is no different. Impressively, seven girls were awarded

ilden Grange caters for girls and boys between the ages of three and thirteen. Within this ten-year span, the teachers always ensure that the children remain stimulated and excited to learn through creative methods such as performance, art and poetry.

STORY MAKERS Hilden Grange recently welcomed a host of authors through their doors, including Gareth P Jones, Mara Bergman and Kate O’Hearn. Each of these authors engaged with the children in interactive workshops, sharing their experiences as writers and encouraging the children themselves to ‘pick up the pen’. These workshops provided the perfect build up to the school’s Creative Arts Week, the theme for which was ‘Story Makers’. This year they were lucky enough to have the chance to work with an award winning animator, listen to a rap poet and dance with a West End star!

SACKVILLE

This month Vine takes a look at Sackville School’s extensive programme of refurbishment, discovering how their new facilities will enhance pupil learning

NEW FACILITIES Builders were busy at the Hildenborough school over the summer holidays creating a new Science block, comprising four laboratories and a preparation room, together with a new, fully equipped Design Technology workshop. Students and staff are also very excited by the prospect of The Sackville Performing Arts Centre, or The SPACE. The studio theatre will provide audience seating with professional lighting and sound systems for drama, music and dance performances. The Sixth Form will also benefit from a new study area and suite of teaching rooms in the Grade II listed building providing an impressive A Level teaching facility. Sackville’s listed building status prevents major redevelopment of the site but the extensive programme of improvements and refurbishments complements the beautiful and extensive grounds, providing a truly idyllic educational setting. However, the school knows that a good education and examination success is about more than just the facilities.

INDIVIDUALISED LEARNING When choosing a secondary school for their child, today’s informed parents are starting to question the

traditional ‘one size fits all’ approach to education. Sackville School believes excellence in teaching starts with a detailed and compassionate understanding of each and every student and ends with the skill of using that knowledge to individualise learning. According to Headmaster Peter Lane, “Whilst teaching will always be a group activity true teaching quality is the ability to ensure every member of that group is motivated, challenged and makes real progress. For schools there are two very diverse but equally crucial phases to developing this effectively; one is appointing and training the best teachers and the other is to reduce class sizes. Neither is easily achieved but Sackville is fortunate with teaching judged as ‘excellent’ in a recent inspection and class sizes of around just 12. Crucially, the aim of the lesson goes beyond imparting knowledge to creating and motivating a desire to learn. Isn’t that what education should be about?” Sackville also recognises the importance of providing extracurricular opportunities for their students and offers an exciting and extensive programme of activities which includes qualifications in horticulture and stable management. The new studio theatre will be put to good use by Drama teacher Siobhan Fogarty, who is launching The Curious Theatre Company which will meet Fridays after school and is open to all local young people aged 5-18. The former professional actress will use her experience from the West End theatre, TV and film, to create new and innovative performances.

Students and staff are very excited by the prospect of The Sackville Performing Arts Centre

Walthamstow Hall THE A TEAM

Walthamstow Hall’s ‘Class of 2013’ ended their school days in style this summer. The students gained the school’s best ever set of A Level and Cambridge Pre-U results and have consequently been recognised by The Times who ranked Walthamstow Hall 42nd in its national A Level league table of state and independent schools in August* *The Times national A Level results league table was published on 16 August 2013. It ranked both state and independent schools based on the proportion of A* and A* - B grades achieved at A Level and their equivalent IB and Cambridge Pre-U grades.

T

he past academic year has been an exceptional one for Walthamstow Hall as it celebrates its 175th Anniversary. There have been National Championship wins for the Judo, Curling and Lacrosse teams, as well as for individual athletes and swimmers. On top of these sporting achievements, there were electrifying music and drama performances in The Ship Theatre and celebrations to mark the school’s 175th anniversary. Now, the outgoing ‘Class of 2013’ have provided the perfect finale with A level and Cambridge Pre-U results that have broken Walthamstow Hall school records.

It was a great morning with plenty of smiles to be seen!

RECORD-BREAKING RESULTS Year 13 gained the school’s highest ever proportion of A* and A grades at A Level and Cambridge Pre-U. An amazing 74% of grades were A* or A and 44% of students attained straight A and A* grades across all of their subjects. Records were also smashed at A* - B grades with 89% of grades awarded at this level. In Physics, a subject studied by 10% of the Sixth Form, every result was an A or A*. The girls studied an average of 3.9 A Level/Pre-U subjects each and gained an average UCAS point score of 414, the equivalent of two A*s and an A. Impressively 20% of girls gained 500 UCAS points or more, with one student gaining a jaw-dropping 720 UCAS points. The spectacular set of results show strength across the whole curriculum.

THE LAST WORD Headmistress, Mrs Jill Milner, is undoubtedly delighted with all of the girls’ achievements and notes how “our excellence in exams has been consistent year-on-year but to see so many records broken in this, our anniversary year, is very special indeed. This is the icing on the cake for what has been a fantastic year of celebration. The girls have had a great time this year and have excelled in the national sporting arena, on the stage and academically in all areas. I am incredibly proud of them and our inspiring teaching staff. I can’t wait to see what they’ll do next.”

Recent academic developments and the school’s unrivalled ability at nurturing its students’ potential, has also produced the best AS results in the school’s history with 72% turning out as A and B grades. Much to their delight, and as a result of their conscientious and diligent approach, over half of Kent College’s students have gained their first choice university places into Russell Group universities and other highly competitive courses across the country. It has to be said that these results are testament to the hard work of the students, staff and Kent College’s academic development. The school strives to build allround confidence in its pupils and ensures that all girls continue to surpass their expectations. “Our 2013 A Level results, and especially the extraordinary value added and progress made by individuals, are evidence of our success. This year, particular mention must go to our English department with 45% of all grades at A*. Both the girls and their teachers go the extra mile in every sense.” Sally-Anne Huang, Headmistress

Kent College girls were delighted with their high results

COMMENTS FROM GIRLS Charlotte, who achieved A*, A and C grades in English, Drama and Classics commented: “I couldn’t be happier with my results. KC has been such a huge part of helping me achieve these results and guiding me through my course. The support from the teachers is great and has given me the confidence to achieve higher grades than I was expecting. I’ve got much better options now, so will be going through clearing to apply for a more competitive university course.” Michaela, who achieved 3 A*s in English Literature, Latin and History and who will take a gap year before starting her Classics degree at Cambridge, commented: “I can’t describe how relieved I am – I couldn’t have asked for more. It’s so overwhelming to get these grades and thanks to my teachers for all their support. At KC they really focus on our individual needs and these results are really the best end to my KC career.” Janna, who achieved A* and two A Grades in Psychology, Geography and Music and who starts her Psychology degree in Bath this September, commented: “I’m really happy; when I first joined KC I didn’t think I’d expect to get results like these and if it wasn’t for Kent College I wouldn’t have done so well.” Georgia, who achieved A* and two A grades in Psychology, English and Theatre Studies and who will study English & Drama at Sheffield University, commented: “I am unbelievably surprised – it’s been the greatest shock of my life! Thank you to my teachers who got me to this point. I’ve been at Kent College since the Reception class in the Prep School and this is the greatest end to my time at KC.” Anna, who achieved 3 A* grades in English, Theatre Studies and History of Art and who will study English and History of Art at Leeds University, commented: “I’d hoped for good grades but these are unbelievable. I never thought I’d get all A* at A Level and now I have it’s an amazing feeling. Thanks to my teachers – I wouldn’t have got these grades if it wasn’t for them.”

ROCHESTER INDEPENDENT COLLEGE Your journey to academic success As parents of children in Years 5 and 6 consider their secondary education options they are inevitably looking at what makes different local schools stand out. This month Vine takes you on a journey to find out what makes Rochester Independent College unique LIFE AT ROCHESTER INDEPENDENT COLLEGE As a non-uniform school, teachers at Rochester Independent College don’t waste valuable time enforcing petty uniform rules. There’s nothing to rebel against and teachers enjoy positive and mutually respectful relationships with students as a result. RIC offers children from the age of 11 a world of difference from a traditional secondary school. With class sizes averaging eight, the individual attention students receive means that confidence and self-assurance soon grow, and students thrive in an atmosphere where self-expression and equality (everyone is on first-name terms) is paramount. In a smaller school setting we can more clearly recognise and focus on students’ needs with the expectation that all will do well academically, grow in confidence and have great memories of school life. Year 10 student Gabriel joined RIC from Hilden Grange Prep, Tonbridge and says: “The teachers are friendly and open, everyone has been great since day one. Lessons are taught in an enjoyable fashion and I like not having to wear a blazer.” Daniel, who is also in Year 10, joined RIC from Sutton Valence Prep and says: “RIC is brilliant because the classes are very small and all the teachers are really nice. They don’t wear suits and ties either!”

choices of GCSEs in Kent including Environmental Science, Film Studies, Textiles and Photography. Year 7 students travel on a daily minibus service from Maidstone, Sevenoaks, Otford, Tonbridge and Kings Hill. Students have recently joined RIC from primary, prep and secondary schools all over Kent including Combe Bank, St Olave’s Prep, Lingfield Notre Dame, King’s Rochester, Beechwood Sacred Heart, Skinners’ and Bennett Memorial. Direct entry is available into any year group, including Year 11 as well as the standard 11+ and 13+ points.

College minibus services run from Sevenoaks, Otford, Tonbridge, Tunbridge Wells and Kings Hill

A LEVEL SUCCESS Cecelia Johnson, like so many 18 year olds across Kent, was anxiously awaiting her A Level grades last month. Uniquely however, her results were as much a landmark in the history of her school as they were important to her. While RIC students have been winning top results since 1984, they have traditionally joined for short intensive courses. Cecelia is the first ever student to join in Year 7 at the age of 11 and journey right through the College to sixth form and now onto university. Cecelia is celebrating top results in English Literature, History of Art, Sociology and Fine Art. Cecelia has her dream place on the prestigious Central Saint Martin’s art foundation course.

OPEN DOOR POLICY Within an informal atmosphere, students respond enthusiastically to high expectations of behaviour and achievement. Communication between school and home is a priority in the Lower School, with parents and students encouraged by our effective ‘open door policy’ and regular testing and reports. Your Route to a Top University “Retaking at Rochester has helped to raise my ambition and realise my potential – my previous school told me I would never get into a Russell Group university.” Maddie Russell, RIC 2013 student

It’s always a shock not to receive the results you wanted but it can often be the start of a journey that leads to even higher grades and better university places than those originally hoped for. With the ending of January exams there are still options at RIC that will allow you to achieve the grades you need and still combine this with work experience or gap year adventures. In 2013 nearly 70% of all our A level entries were graded A* to B. 2013 retake student Maddie Russell says: “Last year I had CCB and I only made my insurance offer - Manchester Met. I actually went for one week but felt disappointed

because I knew I could have done better.” As well as retaking English and Geography Maddie took two complete A levels from scratch in Sociology and World Development. Combining retakes with intensive one year A levels is an effective way of ensuring the good universities are impressed - and making a retake year more interesting. Maddie got five Russell group offers this year and secured a place at her first choice - Exeter for Geography. Exeter is the top choice for RIC’s 2013 retakers. Angus Henderson from King’s School Canterbury, Jasper Sawyers from

Cranbrook School and Jonathan Carrington from Fulston Manor, Sittingbourne all have places at The Sunday Times University of the Year. Abigail Pile and Martha McGuinness both from Tonbridge Grammar, successfully retook their A levels at RIC, winning undergraduate spots at Durham for Archaeology and Leeds for Maths and Management respectively. Efosa Osaghae says: “Last year my grades were low because I was lazy. When I got my results I knew I needed to retake but wanted to home study using notes from school. My parents stepped in as they knew it would not

work. Smaller classes at RIC make it more personal and you get a lot of support. I have pushed myself to work hard, the significant factor is that my Dad’s paying for it. I want to do the best I can.” Efosa last year had a place at Bolton University. After retakes at RIC he is now off to study Film at King’s College, London, ranked first in the UK for the subject. Special congratulations go to Georgia Burt from Maidstone who joined RIC with no GCSEs two years ago and now has ABB at A level and a place at Sussex to study History.

RIC + Maths + Physics = Oxbridge

Off to study Physics in 2013 at Oxford University is Tal Henke who joined RIC as an A level boarding student from Monmouth Comprehensive School and went on to gain an A* in Physics, an A* in Maths, an A in Further Maths and an A in German. Tal’s achievement in securing an Oxford place is even more impressive as he joined with a relatively modest GCSE background. His results would not have been good enough for a place at some of Kent’s super selective grammars. As Cambridge say: “Post-16 exam performance is a much better predictor of degree success. Strong performance in

Years 12 and 13 can make up for less stellar performance at GCSE.” Tal spent his gap year teaching Maths in Tanzania and says of his time at RIC: “I enjoyed the nature of study at A level much more than at GCSE. I was particularly inspired by the style of teaching because it was very challenging and concept rich. I learnt not just how to answer questions, but to actually understand what the question was asking. I also learnt self-discipline and to organise myself. I enjoyed the international feel of the College, experiencing other cultures, the intensive accumulation of knowledge, breakfast on the weekend and the lovely staff.”

LITERARY FESTIVAL

THE

perfect wife John Morrison previews one of the fascinating books at the centre of this year’s Sevenoaks Literary Celebration

T

he perfect marriage. Most of us dream about it. Some turn to lonely hearts columns or dating websites in the hunt for the ideal partner. But back in the days of George III, one young man decided that the only young woman fit to be his wife would be one he had created himself. Thomas Day, a young gentleman of independent means, was probably not alone in finding society ladies too sophisticated and spoiled by their upbringing to match his exacting standards. He fantasised about “a gentle lady of the West” with “Health’s rosy bloom” on her cheek who would be happy to live “sequestered in some secret glade,” devoted to him alone. What was unusual about Day was that he was eccentric enough to try to turn his fantasy into reality. Heavily influenced by the idea of “natural education”, promoted by French philosopher JeanJacques Rousseau, Day hatched a plan. As one of his friends put it, he “expected that, with a person neither formed by nature, nor cultivated by art, to please, he should win some female wiser than the rest of her sex, who should feel for him the most romantic and everlasting attachment – a paragon, who should forget the follies and vanities of her sex for him.” The story of Day’s matrimonial adventures is the subject of a delightful new book by author and 18th-century specialist Wendy Moore. How to Create the Perfect Wife tells how Day tricked an orphanage in Shrewsbury, one of the country branches of the London Foundling Hospital, into handing over a 12-year-old girl, Ann Kingston, supposedly as an apprentice servant in the household of one of his married friends. In Moore’s balanced and scrupulously fair account, Day “had every confidence that he could transform his illiterate and uncultured orphan into the clever and compliant woman he would one day marry… He would train her to like the same things he liked, to despise the things he despised and even to love his pitted face, straggly hair and stooped shoulders, to give birth to his

children and to live with him in perfect harmony.” Day, encouraged by friends who were just as keen on Rousseau as he was, seem never to have grasped that the Pygmalion myth was just a myth. Moore’s book, using Day’s own writings and those of his friends, chronicles how his scheme failed. Renaming Ann as Sabrina, Day managed to secure Dorcas, a second young orphan girl from the Foundling Hospital to be her companion. Renaming the second girl Lucretia, he took them both to France, intending to spend a year deciding which of them would become his wife. Finally choosing Sabrina, on his return to England he sent the dull-witted Lucretia away with a generous financial settlement to be apprenticed to a milliner. But little more than two years later, he concluded that his experiment with Sabrina, now 14, was also heading for failure. Disillusioned, he despatched her to a boarding school and began to look elsewhere. Moore’s book is careful not to judge Day by modern moral standards, but is careful to point out that, even in 1770, his abduction of the two girls was a serious crime. Suffering from a mixture of deluded romanticism and misogyny, he was undoubtedly calculating enough not to be found out, but also naïve and, in his own way, quite generous. One of the many contradictions in his life was that he was a liberal who campaigned against slavery. What did Sabrina herself feel about the way she was treated? Unfortunately, though her life is quite well documented and she lived on into her 70s, it was not in her interest or that of her middle class friends, including the Burney family, to probe too deeply into her past. One of the achievements of Moore’s research in the voluminous archives of the Foundling Hospital is that for the first time, Sabrina’s real birth origins are revealed. Paradoxically, today’s readers know more about her than she did herself.

Day had every confidence that he could transform his illiterate and uncultured orphan into the clever and compliant woman he would one day marry

n Wendy Moore will be talking about her book as part of the Sevenoaks Literary Celebration on Monday 23 September at 7.30 pm in the Undercroft of St Nicholas’ Church. Tickets for all events are on sale at Sevenoaks Bookshop. For a full programme, go to www.sevenoaksliterarycelebration.com

Fusing the old

WITH THE NEW Vine looks at how Offset Architects transformed a cramped century-old semidetached 3-bedroom house into a modern 4-bed wonder that harmoniously fuses the old with the new and the traditional with the contemporary

T

he homeowners of this property in Bitchet Green had become frustrated with their inability to renovate their home because of its location within the Metropolitan Green Belt, Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The property was originally constructed at the turn of the century as a semi-detached pair of cottages, which were later knocked-through to create a detached 3-bedroom house with a detached double garage. What the residents wanted for their small, cramped home was an interior and exterior overhaul. They wished for their house to be more spacious and open, with a clear front door. Unfortunately, the clients came across difficulties in executing the plans for their home because of its location in an area of restricted development. Luckily for them, however, Offset Architects had a vision which would comply with these local planning policies and restrictions on extension sizes. Their initial design suggestions showed the clients that Offset could renovate their house in spite of the limited amount of additional building space they could construct. Offset Architects cleverly constructed a plan for a two-storey extension, in place of an ugly single storey flat roof extension, with a glazed link between the two buildings. Without losing any of the original buildings on the property site, they transformed the old, poky house into a contemporary, spacious property which maintained its quaint charm. Slightly angling the extension, Offset ensured that the new property was as pleasing to the eye from inside as it was outside, maximising the stunning rear views of the Kentish countryside. Use of external building materials such as stone, brick and tile in the interior design further unified the house internally and externally. Creating a rejuvenated, clear interior by removing walls and increasing the number of windows made the property open plan, giving it the spacious quality it was originally lacking. We spoke with the homeowners about their experience with Offset: “They were sensitive to the location and very helpful when designing within the constraints. Sympathetic to the existing property, they were keen through the design to bring the garden into the house, to unite the exterior with the interior. We had briefed a few other architects but, because of their sympathy to our wishes, we felt that Offset were the right architects for the job. They have a good reputation and the vision to bring together innovative ideas. Marrying the original buildings of the property with the innovative extension and maintaining a policy of a unified interior and exterior means that Offset have ensured this new property sits beautifully in its village context.

REJUVINATING

A

Tunbridge Wells-based Appleby Architects have just completed an 18-month-long project renovating the Old Palace in Wrotham and building an ultramodern underground swimming pool

ppleby Architects have brought the 14th century Old Palace up to date with contemporary technology and design by creating an underground swimming pool and conducting a series of unobtrusive refurbishments. Listed building specialists, Appleby were very sensitive to this property’s status as a Grade II* listed building. With only 4.1% of all listed buildings designated Grade II, this rare property is a site of archaeological importance because of its history as the Archbishop’s Palace. The brief from the clients was to bring the property into the 21st century and add a swimming pool to the grounds. Based on its listing and location in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this proved a delicate brief. Appleby were able to overcome the planning difficulties associated with such properties through the innovative idea of an underground swimming pool and through marrying the old structures of the building with modern design. In designing, planning and constructing at the Old Palace, there was a three-stage process of approval which included gaining planning permission, listed-building approval and gaining the confidence, trust and approval of on-site conservation officers. Across these stages Appleby liaised with multiple special interest organisations and specialists, including the Kent Archaeological Society, Wessex Archaeology, English Heritage and multiple conservation officers.

The refurbishment of this 6 bedroomed property rejuvenated the 1970s interior by fitting a Smallbone kitchen in a new open plan living-dining area, an en-suite bathroom and dressing room in the master bedroom, an ultramodern glass staircase and a geothermal heat pump system. The geothermal heat pump, a highly innovative form of energy generation, saves 75% on mains energy use. This system was fitted at the Old Palace to supply the pool, wet rooms and underfloor heating in the house. When laying the underfloor heating they discovered authentic medieval flooring which was carefully lifted under the supervision of the Tonbridge and Malling conservation officer. It was then re-laid with the heating system in place underneath. A similar process, enhancing the older structures of the house and integrating them within the new design, was used when carefully sandblasting the beams throughout the property. The larger part of the project was the underground, watertight pool house. When digging the foundations for this structure Appleby discovered some medieval ruins. These were assessed by Senior Archaeological Officer, Wendy Rogers, before the pool was fitted at a maximum depth that would avoid any intrusion on existing archaeology. To be ecologically sound it is also completely waterproof from the outside. This new building technique, constructed by laying half an inch of clay on the outside of the concrete foundations, ensures the whole structure is dry and warm. Separate from the main house, the pool house includes a steam room, changing area, large utility room, gym space and a 12m x 6m pool. It is naturally lit by a roof light that blends with the exterior environment through a turf covering. Matthew Stock, owner of the Old Palace, has been so pleased with his experience of Appleby Architects that he has purchased further properties on which he intends to work with Appleby.

Craft & Design Fair Purchase direct from the very best craftmakers and artists in the UK

With a new ‘Spend Time in Sevenoaks’ Guide in the pipeline, Sevenoaks Accommodation Forum are giving amateur snappers the chance to showcase their talent e’re calling all wouldbe photographers for the chance to have your photograph chosen as the cover of the 2014 ‘Spend Time in Sevenoaks’ brochure. So what’s the competition about? Well, you simply have to grab your camera and get snapping to capture an image that demonstrates the very essence of our Kentish region. An image that is evocative, enticing and tells a strong visual story. Following the abrupt 2012 demise of the Sevenoaks Tourist Information Centre, the voluntary Sevenoaks Accommodation Forum (SAF) has been passionately active in promoting the delights of the Sevenoaks district. A major initiative was the publication of the ‘Spend Time in Sevenoaks’ leaflet, a bed and breakfast and self-catering accommodation listing designed to showcase all the best retreats. The widely distributed guide proved so popular that a 2014 edition is now planned and in the making. Our region is a veritable photographic cornucopia – white cowled oasts; scented lavender fields; blossomclad orchards; long distance footpaths; tile-hung cottages and historic houses. It is these glories that SAF has been enthusiastically promoting to locals and tourists alike The competition has been brilliantly supported by the

very finest of the Sevenoaks district. The Bull at Wrotham, a Guardian top 10 summer watering hole, is offering a fabulous winner’s prize – a celebratory party for eight, with a three course meal plus overnight accommodation for the winner in one of The Bull’s luxuriously refurbished rooms. In addition to this, the competition has seen additional prizes generously donated by Ightham Mote, a Kentish historical gem; Mitchell and Peach exquisite hand-blended lavender infused products and Matthew Cross Hair Salon, Sevenoaks’ prestigious hair stylist. With so many areas of outstanding natural beauty, photo opportunities are in abundance around Kent and particularly in Sevenoaks. From old churches and castles to serene lakes and hedgerows bustling with wildlife, the little town has it all. “Discover the garden of England” is a phrase often used when talking about Kent and the Sevenoaks Accomodation Forum’s photographic competition is the perfect chance for the people who know the town best to make that concept a reality. And it’s not just the winner that will get to showcase their work because the best images from runners up will also have the chance to be used in future publications.

So start snapping now! The competition will run from 1 September 2013 and final entries must be submitted by 1 November 2013.

HOME AND GARDEN

Knowing

SUTHERLAND We launch some quick-fire questions at Sutherland Furniture as they tell us why the elements of design are vital

EXPLAIN WHAT SUTHERLAND FURNITURE IS ALL ABOUT?

We can ensure the end result is a design that will synchronise flawlessly with their lifestyle

We focus on kitchen design branching out from lifestyle. Our team love a challenge and will take on absolutely anything and any project, regardless of the scale. You can’t assume that everybody builds the same home and we want to deliver bespoke quality to all our clients, no matter what their budget. That’s our whole concept- we design around an individual’s lifestyle and adapt to fit with their home. For instance, if clients need the height of work tops adjusting or space designed for pets, we provide everything from alterations to dog showers!

SO WHAT MAKES YOU STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD? Unlike a lot of other companies, we spend an extensive amount of time detailing clients’ specific design and layout plans. After an initial personal consultation, we’ll go back to them with as many as five prospective options for the project they want. We go away and look at what

Just one of the bespoke creations by Sutherland Furniture

would best integrate with their existing property and day to day needs, so that we can ensure the end result is a design that will synchronise flawlessly with their lifestyle. Clients have said that they choose us because we spend more time on design and consultation than anyone else.

AND WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PROJECT TO DATE? It has to be the Baufritz house we’re working on. It’s essentially a German ‘kit house’, created overseas and then constructed on site. As an eco project it’s a bit different for us and requires a range of environmentally friendly finishes. The design is definitely a new challenge, utilising a four-metre concrete island to facilitate an extended cantilevered breakfast bar. It’s definitely innovative! n If you are looking to update your kitchen visit www.sutherlandfurniture.co.uk or call to arrange an appointment on 01732 867536
