A Q u i e t A r r i va l o f H o p e A story from North Africa
We recently visited a nearby Muslim country that has been overwhelmed by war, division, oppression, poverty, and greed. Our believing friend there demonstrates the likeness of Christ so well and it was a meaningful experience getting to come alongside him while we were there. We sang and danced with the refugee children in the school nearly everyday. These children are impoverished, displaced, without families, and without hope. We visited homes of widows, sat with grieving families, and shook hands with those who don’t often receive the human dignity they deserve. As the Lord put words or pictures on our hearts for them, we shared those as well. And then, we left. The children are still hungry, the women are still abused, the men are still without work. Education is withheld, money is scarce, and a sense of peace is a foreign concept. Our prayer is that we bring hope in the words shared, laughter as we dance, dignity as we shook hands, and love as we look them in the eyes and ask for the Lord’s Kingdom to come.
Getting Settled An update from Western Asia/Eastern Europe
We have officially been here for several months now! In our first weeks, the Lord provided an adequate car for our family, a home to rent, a fellow believer that has significantly helped us in our transition, and quality time with our teammates. We are in language school for twenty hours a week with a wonderful language teacher who shares our faith, has an infectious laugh, and lavishes so much grace and patience on us. We have been encouraged through the books we are reading and the ability to communicate with love ones back home via technology. Our family is transitioning to live here better than anticipated and we remain hopeful for more of the Lord’s provision and grace to our family!

Funerals and Festivities An update from the Middle East refugee ministries I had a conversation with my language nurturer Hannah about how God speaks to us. I asked her if she's ever heard God speak to her, and she responded, once in a dream. In this dream, there was a man in white and a man in black. The two men were fighting to the death, and the man in white was the victor. When I asked her if she knew who the man in all white was, she replied matter-of-factly, "from Allah (God) of course". I then shared that Isa al-Masih (Jesus) often reveals himself in dreams as a man in all white. I encouraged her to ask God to speak to her-to ask him for another dream of the man in white. I prayed with her, asking God to give us both a dream of him that night. It was a big step of faith for me, as I was asking for something completely out of my control. Sadly, she couldn't remember her dreams the next morning, or the morning after that. While I was initially disappointed, I'm learning to expect the unexpected and I'm continuing to boldly pray that Jesus will reveal himself to her and her family in dreams.

The St. Louis, memorialized in the movie Voyage of the Damned, was forced to sail back to Europe. Many of its passengers eventually died in concentration camps. Hitler gloated! He said that no country on earth is willing to accept Jews. This emboldened him to not just remove Jews from Germany and German occupied countries, but to exterminate the Jews of Europe. There are more than 71 million people worldwide who have been forced to leave their homes – because of wars, gang violence and starvation. Nearly 26 million people who have been persecuted due to their religion, race or politics have been forced to go to another country. We are experiencing the largest wave of refugees the world has seen since the Second World War. More than half the refugees are children. Six million people alone have been forced from their homes in Syria. Nearly five million Venezuelans, over 15% of the entire population of Venezuela, have emigrated from the country because of the political and economic turmoil there over the past 15 years. There are many political issues that are NOT addressed by the Bible. The Bible says nothing about what the corporate or individual tax rate ought to be. There’s nothing in Scripture about tax reform. There’s nothing about whether God wants us to be in favor of Medicare for all, employer provided plans or some other V I N E YA R D C O L U M B U S . O R G

The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.” (Luke 10:36–37)
It’s good for us Christians to remember that Jesus our Lord was a refugee along with his mother Mary and his father Joseph. They were forced to flee to Egypt to escape the tyrannical King Herod. Many of our forefathers in the faith were also refugees. Jacob fled his homeland because he was afraid of being killed by his brother, Esau. Moses fled Egypt to Midian because Pharaoh sought to kill him. David had to run from King Saul and fled to the land of the Philistines. The same was true of Elijah. In the New Testament, the church fled persecution. The Bible is a story of refugees and immigrants if we have eyes to see.

BUILDING THE KINGDOM TOGETHER by Shawn Steward & Adrienne Ash

THE MIX | FEBRUARY 2020
Adrienne: I love Black History Month. It reminds me to stop and remember. As a Black woman, it reminds me to remember everything that has transpired so that I can be who I am today. It reminds me not to take anything for granted. It reminds me that my education, my home, my role as a Pastor is because I had ancestors who fought and died so I COULD have it. Some of them fought and died for me to have something they never got to experience themselves. Black History Month carves out space for me to intentionally think about all that was done, appreciate it all and pay honor to those who fought and sacrificed…and honor
Investigate Your Heart Shawn: There is a saying that “if you have a brain, you have bias”. We all acquire biases (often unconsciously) through our unique life experiences. I find most people experience negative feelings toward the term ‘bias’. It is good to remember that just because we have biases, it does not make us bad people. When used properly, our biases can help us make better decisions. Though, when used improperly – especially in our people-related decisions – our biases can be really damaging, and disproportionately so to
those who are still doing it today.

community. It is a painful and uncomfortable history, but one that must be remembered, spoken about and not repeated. Black History Month also has the opportunity to remind us, as a church, to remember as well. It is a time to remember God’s heart for humanity and for His church. Revelation says this about God’s intention for us. The book of Revelation 7:9-10 says - "After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no

one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. And they cried out in a loud voice: 'Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.'" God didn’t make us to assimilate into “one type” and then all come together. We came from different nations, tribes and languages. He intentionally has us come together with all of our differences. Vineyard Columbus is so proud to be a church that has attendees and members from over 130 nations come together each weekend. By the work of the Lord, our church looks far from the expression that “Sunday is the most segregated day of the week.” But as we celebrate that, we must also remember that we want so much more than that. We want to be a church who
“Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”
loves, appreciates and values each other’s differences. We want to intentionally be together at church and in our lives as well. Shawn Steward, Vineyard Columbus’ Director of Human Resources, has been very passionate about this intentionality at our church. He and I have had many conversations about what this

appreciating each other’s differences, not just accepting or
Often times we see someone who is different than us express their differences through music, dress, food and many other forms of expression. We watch their differences, and while we tolerate it and not make them feel bad for doing things their way, we have no intention on trying to understand it for ourselves. We are comfortable being around different ethnicities and their cultures, as long as it doesn’t impact the way we like to do things, as long as we can stay comfortable.

appreciate. Because when we begin to appreciate each other’s cultures, we begin to appreciate the actual person, our brother and sister. Appreciate how that song reminds them of their family or country. Appreciate how their clothing may tell a story or express something significant. Appreciate how certain fragrances remind them of home. Then we don’t have to just be a bystander to each other’s beautiful differences, but we get to share in each other’s experiences and joys. For authentic connections, ask the uncomfortable questions Shawn: If you are a White person like me, it can be hard to imagine or fully understand that your neighbor, co-worker, someone in your small group or friend of color is living a completely different experience, simply by virtue of their race. Throughout my own life, there have been more times than I’d like to admit that I’ve missed the opportunity to understand, appreciate and build a more authentic connection with someone culturally different from me because of my hesitancy to ask a question for fear I may offend and appear insensitive. I remember so vividly the first time I mustered up the courage to admit to a close friend of mixed races that I was really struggling with not knowing if I should refer to another friend of mine as Black or African-American. I was hoping that in my anxious vulnerability she would tell me the answer, one way or another, so it could be settled for me and I could move forward. But that’s not what happened. My friend very graciously and directly responded with “why don’t you ask her what she prefers?”. It sounds so
Adrienne: Anthony Cannon, Visitation and Care Pastor here at Vineyard Columbus was having a conversation about racial injustice, and was asked by another staff member “How can I help?” Anthony said “the first thing you can do is to believe me.” African-Americans in the United States live in a tension. We realize that as a people, we are in a significantly better place than our ancestors. We are able to achieve far beyond what they could have ever imagined their descendants having. Yet, we still face racial injustice, prejudice, and inequality. And though it might not be as extreme as it was 400 years ago, and we don’t face segregation as we did just 66 years ago, believe us when we speak of the camouflaged and blatant racism and injustice we face daily, regardless if you see it or not, regardless if it isn’t as bad as you perceive it to be. Listen and believe us. Listen not to respond, but listen to understand. Ask AfricanAmericans to share their stories with you, and prepare to listen to them, without thinking you know everything about the topic, but go into prepared to learn something new, a different perspective. And though you may never be able to fully understand how they feel, you can choose to listen and believe them. You can choose to allow your brother or sister’s burdens become your own. That is how we come together. See the world through their eyes
