orn to Nigerian pastor missionaries, Dorsia Marchand grew up in the Christian faith keenly aware of social injustice. What
also did not escape her attention were several women of the bible who taught, were leaders, and were given positions of authority. However, that was not what she experienced and it grieved her spirit. She questioned why God allowed freedom to women of the bible but not in her current day church. Following the rules of that denomination, Dorsia felt her expression of faith and female strengths were too narrowly defined, and in her heart, she saw herself as non-denominational. Dorsia left Toledo to attend college at the Ohio State University, in Columbus, Ohio. There, she involved herself in “The Cru” Campus Crusade for Christ and various campus ministries. She desired to live out the practical mission of Jesus, which included participating in many social justice causes like immigration. In 2002, a group of students brought her to Joshua House, a group of college-aged young adults who worshipped at Vineyard Columbus. Dorsia discovered a number of ministries dovetailed with social justice concerns that she felt convicted to participate in; which also served the city. Another draw was learning how Vineyard valued women as leaders and pastors. Through participation in Joshua house, Dorsia stepped into leadership, and along with a few other group members, into the big leadership shoes of John and Amanda Nash who were leaving as part of a church plant in Amsterdam. Around that same time, Vineyard announced their Blessed to Be a Blessing campaign. Finding a balance between giving sacrificially and making good on a three-year commitment proved challenging and became a matter for serious prayer. While Dorsia figured out postgraduation life, repayment of student loans, a new job and the responsibilities of newly launched adulthood, she admitted that the addition of another payment seemed scary. “It’s really true that where your money goes, your heart goes,” Dorsia said. “But I felt God saying to take it to the next level. capital campaign was announced, those seeds from his early days at Vineyard were blooming in his heart. He knew it wasn’t a matter of if he would give, but how much. “Praying about a number I could commit to for three years? I was thinking, I don’t know what’s going to happen next year or in two years. And even the thought of that was intimidating.” He prayed seriously, and when God delivered a number, Nick continued tithing and added his commitment. “I looked at Blessed to Be a Blessing as doing what God was calling me to do. It meant being a part of the goals of the church, and teams overseas. Because of my increased commitment, I felt like a more dedicated disciple of Jesus.” When Nick and Dorsia learned they were part of the same church and the giving campaign, and they talked about it a lot. Their relationship grew, they began dating and became engaged. They often discussed giving, tithes and offerings and how that would V I N E YA R D C O L U M B U S . O R G
