But according to the author, an enormous issue for many African nations – seen in short life expectancies, high infant mortality rates, the lack of public services, terrible infrastructure, illiteracy, the absence of adequate healthcare, the inability of countries to feed themselves – is summarized by the great Nigerian novelist, Chinua Achebe, when he wrote about Nigeria saying:
Years ago when I first began pastoring, there was a young art student, a diminutive teenage girl named Paige, who came to the church. She was a freshman at CCAD (Columbus College of Art and Design). One day, Paige came up to me very meekly and said, “Pastor Rich, I’m thinking about starting some teas in my dormitory at art school. I was going to invite some of the other girls in my dorm. He went on to say:
There is basically nothing wrong with the Nigerian character; there is nothing wrong with the Nigerian land, or the climate, water or air, or anything else. The Nigerian problem is the unwillingness, or inability, of its leaders to rise to the responsibility, to the challenge of personal example, which are the hallmarks of true leadership. I wonder if we could sit down and talk with them about Jesus.” Over the course of the year, Paige must have led 15 fellow art students to Christ. I used to think, “How in the

interest in it,” Jeff explains, “and God gave me a heart for them and I was totally shocked.” When the ministry leaders asked him to continue serving, he remembers his response: “I told them I’d pray about it, thinking I was going to leave, and God said to stay, and I’ve been there ever since. I never left.” About 14 months ago, after 40 years of working, Jeff was dreading retirement. During his devotions, God gave Jeff the Scripture from Matthew 6 about not storing up treasures on earth but instead directing our lives toward storing up treasures in heaven, and it became a driving

him. At the top of the list were teaching, encouraging, and helping, so Jeff considered the ESL classes offered through Vineyard’s International Ministries. When Jeff’s wife Marcia had taught ESL classes twenty years ago at another church, he was not interested, but he says this time was different. “[At the time] that group made me uncomfortable,” confesses Jeff. “But I wondered if maybe God would give me a heart for immigrants and refugees like he did with the 3’s.” He observed a class then jumped right in. He was assigned to Level 1. After the first class, the teacher asked him to take it over so she could do a Bible study with some of the immigrants during class time. “So the next class, I was the teacher!” exclaims Jeff. “What I experienced was that God had given me a heart for the people. I prayed, I did the lesson plan, I followed the curriculum faithfully, and it started to work.”
the address and they come here now and they love it.” As one of 36 volunteers working with the ESL classes, Jeff is quick to say that he is nothing special, that God is working through all of them. Kelly Oris started volunteering after Rich Nathan posted a challenge on social media to get to know more immigrants. She recently started helping in Jeff’s class. “Jeff connects one-on-one even when there are 25 people in the class and people really feel that connection,” she explains with a smile. These classes aren’t just transforming students, they’re transforming Jeff. “I experience first-hand every class that God loves Muslims,” Jeff says, “because I feel his love inside me, coming through me, and I feel his love touching the people and they respond. They probably don’t understand that it’s not me, it’s God.” He goes on, “Formerly I was uncomfortable with immigrants. Intellectually, I knew we should absolutely welcome the stranger… but not me.

to volunteer, and I could see their fear but I could also see courage. They started to do it more, and I started to encourage more…sometimes I would clap…and they started to spring to life,” Jeff says with a twinkle in his blue eyes. “Then, they started sitting in the front of the class, raising their hands, volunteering, and now they are bringing their friends!” Over half the Level 1 class is from Somalia, and it’s doubled in size. “The testimony that the church has with these Muslims is amazing,” exclaims Ximena Lozada-Rosales, Ministry Assistant/ESL Program Director. “They feel safe here and loved. It’s not about words, it’s about actions. Love is an action here.” Fatou T. is a Level 3 student originally from Gambia. She recently met an Egyptian couple and invited them to the classes. “I was sad,” says Fatou. “I know how they feel. It’s hard if you don’t speak and you want to say something but you can’t. So, I wanted to help them out. They are not Muslim but we are all immigrants. I got them
months ago and decide I’m going to have this love for these people…but I do.” It’s even transforming Jeff physically. He has Chronic Fatigue Syndrome but says he experiences a miracle every class. “When I do ministry, either with the 3’s or ESL, I often don’t feel good,” he laments. “I’m tired, I have a headache, and I often feel like I have a low-grade flu. But I know when the class starts the Spirit is going to kick in, and I’m going to have the energy and wherewithal to do it. For the next hour and a half, I absolutely lose myself in what God is doing for the students and it’s wonderful. There’s a payback later in the day, but it’s worth it.” Jeff doesn’t take credit for anything, he’s just full of gratitude. He explains, “God has been so gracious to break that silence that was my own making, and he’s given me a heart to serve. I just feel grateful.” By Beth Bahe V I N E YA R D C O L U M B U S . O R G
