From the Editor We Get By With a Little Help
Weall need help from time to time–help finding a doctor or a place to live, help securing elder or child care, help with grieving or stress. At other times, we want to give back, perhaps to mentor a young person, to volunteer at a fundraiser, or to lend our skills in a meaningful way.
On the Vineyard, a robust roster of nonprofits – more than 100 – stands ready to connect us to the help we need, to the ways we can give back and to each other. Each year when we publish the complete directory of nonprofits (see page 16), we’re inspired by the breadth of services available and by the progressive solutions nonprofits embrace.
One nonprofit, Martha’s Vineyard Community Services, recognizing a need for more home-based child care on the Island, sought help from another nonprofit, MVYouth. The result is an innovative program, Family Child Care, in which licensed family care providers like Donna Creighton (pictured on the cover) get help to expand the number of children they serve and are supported by a network of other providers. Other nonprofits such as Harbor Homes and The Cottagers (page 20) have found a way to work together on the problem of homelessness.
In this issue, you’ll also find a collection of classes you can take this winter (page 5), thanks to Island nonprofits. And please read our interview with Polly Simpkins (page 8), an Islander who values connection above all else. After all, we’re all in this together.

Skill Set
You’ve got skills! Thanks to classes and events organized by Island nonprofits, you can learn something new this winter.
It’s never too late to learn something new. Nor – on Martha’s Vineyard – is there ever a shortage of those willing to teach, even in the off-season. Thanks to the Island’s nonprofit organizations we’re saluting in this issue of the Vine, there are classes and events (some with an enrollment price, some free) for every interest. By signing up for self-improvement, you’re supporting essential Island services, too. It’s a win-win.
Collected below is a sample list of opportunities available on the Island in the next few months, each hosted by a local nonprofit organization. Naturally, schedules are subject to change; there will be cancellations and additions, so visit calendar.vineyardgazette.com for regularly updated dates, times and places.
SADDLE UP
To ride a horse is to make a bond, to form a trusting relationship with another living creature. At Misty Meadows Equine Learning Center, it is these kinds of relationships that instructors aim to foster in horsemanship training programs. With a mission to make horseback riding accessible to all, the center provides affordable equestrian education to Islanders of all ages. Classes range from learning the basics of horse care, riding, and stable management, to more advanced practices like mounted archery. Visit mistymeadowsmv.org for winter schedules.
MISTY MEADOWS
WRITE IT OUT
If the language arts are your thing, make sure you take advantage of the myriad free writing courses and workshops the Island has to offer. During the winter, PathwaysARTS (pathwaysmv.org) hosts weekly events at the Chilmark Tavern, with opportunities to learn about writ ing and art techniques and to present finished works.
Our wonderful town libraries (all six of them), host both virtual and in-person poetry and memoir workshops. Check out West Tisbury library’s bi-weekly poet ry writing workshops facilitated by town poet laureate Tain Leonard-Peck. And while Moira Silva’s early-winter memoir workshop at the West Tisbury library is full, she’ll be running it later in the winter and early spring at the Vineyard Haven li brary and then the Chilmark library.
GET CRAFTY
Unlock your creative side at Featherstone Center for the Arts. In addition to frequent art exhibits, Featherstone is home to a diverse lineup of art and crafting classes. Ceramic, jewelry making, beading and painting classes are all available this winter, along with open studio sessions for drawing, knitting and ceramics.
Open studio fees start at $20, while classes are generally more expensive. Sample classes this winter include Beginner Wheel Throwing, Cable Knitting, Enameling: Glass on Metal, Collage, Still Life 101 and Open Studio Life Drawing.
For more information and an updated winter 2023 schedule, visit featherstoneart.org. Gift certificates are available too - another great way to con tribute to a nonprofit.

SHAPE-SHIFTING
Stepping into the gym for the first time can be intimidating, especially if you don’t know where to start. At the YMCA of Martha’s Vineyard, starting your fitness journey doesn’t have to be so lonely. The YMCA hosts more than 70 different group exercise programs for
every fitness level and age. Yoga, Pilates, spinning, Zumba and swimming are all available, each one an excellent way to get your blood pumping. (Kickboxing, anyone?) Class prices vary and YMCA members can enroll with a discount. For more information, visit ymcamv.org.
HIT THE TRAIL
Just because it’s cold outside doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the outdoors. To help deepen your appreciation of the exceptional natural environment of our Island, take the time to join one of the many conservation-focused events featured this winter. Every full moon, Felix Neck hosts a Full Moon Owl Prowl, an opportunity to look for, listen for and learn about the nocturnal birds; the fee is $35.
If you prefer a daytime woodland experience, Martha’s Vineyard Community Services (mvcommunityservices.org) and Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation (sheriffsmeadow.org) will be teaming up this winter to provide a series of free, family-friendly educational hikes. Vineyard Conservation Society (vineyardconservation.org) is also hosting a series of guided hikes this winter.
MAKE THAT MEAL LOCAL
On an Island filled with farms and surrounded by fish and shellfish, cooking skills are a must. If you don’t know where to start, try taking a class at The FARM Institute. Cooking classes center around in-season local ingredients and core techniques. Some focus on beginner skills such as knife techniques while
others are more specialized, such as Slough Farm chef Charlie Granquist’s whole-animal butchering workshops. Chef Jenny DeVivo (below) teaches monthly classes for kids. Fees begin at around $30 and Trustees members receive a discount. Visit thetrustees.org/place/farm-insti tute-the/ for full schedule.

A Cup of Connection
AN INTERVIEW WITH POLLY SIMPKINS
BY SISSY BIGGERS • PHOTOS BY RAY EWING
If you run into Polly Simpkins at the supermarket in Vineyard Haven, you might recognize her gentle, soothing voice as that of MVY Radio’s weekend mornings DJ. In person she has that same calming and particularly kind demeanor which she admits, “is my effort to find the light in other people.”
Polly’s own light shines not only in her role with the iconic nonprofit radio station – and in the day she spends every week at the Vineyard Haven library – but also in a nonprofit she founded herself. A Cup of Karma Project is a storytelling workshop that culminates in an annual summer event bringing together thoughtful Island minds to share an account of someone who has inspired them and changed their lives.
Polly’s road to founding A Cup of Karma is a mystical one, starting in 1987 with an encounter with a holy man on
a European train, a visit to the tea fields of Darjeeling, India, and a move back to Martha’s Vineyard where she has always felt a strong connection.
Q. When did the Island become your family’s home?
A. While my family’s connection to the Island goes back four generations, I did not move here until I was a senior in high school, which is how I discovered MVY. As a bit of a loner, the music and the people really became sacred to me. When I went off to Iowa for a broadcast journalism degree, I brought MVY music I had recorded on cassettes: Talking Heads, Jackson Browne, The Rolling Stones, Rickie Lee Jones – so much of the music we still play today – and it became a touchstone for me.
Q. Was that part of the karma you put out into the
universe – that one day you would be a part of this ‘sacred’ radio station?
A. I thought it would be such a dream job. I couldn’t even imagine it, but I continued to listen and learn from the DJs. When my husband Brad and I moved back here with our boys in 2013, I answered an ad for traffic director – a technical job that suited me – but it wasn’t until a few years later I started as a DJ. I guess it was my time.
Q. You often refer to your weekend morning listeners as sitting around a kitchen table. How does that image work for you during a broadcast?
A. Being a radio DJ is such a solitary experience and imagining your audience sitting around the kitchen table is one of the most beautiful illustrations of what radio can be. It’s a sacred experience to be a part of someone’s world and I don’t take it lightly.
Q. You always share so
much detail about an artist, a song, or an album. Where do you get your music chops?
A. Being a music nerd is so fun and collaborative because I am learning all the time – especially from my listeners!
Q. A huge part of being on MVY is the fundraising. How did you adapt to that part of the job?
A. Asking for money repeatedly is difficult, but what makes it so wonderful is that all of us at the station believe so deeply in what we are doing, and we know people feel the same. The listeners show up for us time and time again. Every time we reach our goal, I am amazed and in awe.
Q. How did A Cup of Karma develop?
A. It’s one big trajectory of wanting to connect with people, starting from my own life-changing experience when I visited India, carrying my mother’s ashes to the Taj Mahal. I spent a month working at Mother Teresa’s orphanage in Calcut-
Page 8 · THE VINE Q&A / VINEYARD VOICES
ta and visited the tea fields of Darjeeling where I vibed out on fresh tea. When I came home, I knew I needed to gather people together and start something!
Q. But there were a few stops along the way.
A. Yes, a tearoom in Bridgeport, Connecticut, a berry farm in Vermont and then back to the Vineyard, which is an ideal, gentle place to connect people. A Cup of Karma has grown into a free summer community event where five or more people from the Island, and sometimes beyond, stand up and speak of one person who has inspired their journey. There is tea, of course, and food, and we celebrate our lives and the people in it at a beautiful Vineyard venue. Last year was just an amazing day at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum.
Q. Is it difficult to find those willing to take a leap of faith to share in the public setting?
A. There is no shortage of interesting, wonderful people willing to honor someone who has shown up for them. The whole point is to remind us how lucky we are to have the people we do in our lives and to appreciate them and show them gratitude. It’s a beautiful ritual and I think people need more ritual in their lives – more reasons to gather.
Q. How can readers connect with you before your summer event?
A. I am planning some small-group Cup of Karma storytelling workshops and gratitude gatherings for people to come together and find time to reflect, create and celebrate their life journey and life purpose.
Q. Do you have an idea of who will be sharing their stories next summer?
A. I have not decided who will be doing my big event. It usually starts with one person. The first year I was moved to
ask Mike Benjamin and last year I asked Allen Whiting and then I built around that. I am just waiting for that inspiration.
Q. Please share a ritual of gratitude we can practice in our daily lives.
A. For me it is as simple as lighting a candle in the morning and sitting with my eyes closed and reflecting on the people in my life. Nature is another way
to connect to gratitude and the people we love. But it’s not just the people who make us happy, it’s also the people who have hurt us and challenged us that are our greatest teachers, too.

Last summer's Cup of Karma storytelling event at the Martha's Vineyard Museum featured Allen Whiting, Rose Styron, Freedom Cartwright, Mark Cronin, Donna Hylton and Wayne Sampson each talking about an important relationship in their life.
Q&A / VINEYARD VOICES
Polly Simpkins believes in connection – through music (she's weekend morning DJ at MVY Radio), through gathering and storytelling (her nonprofit Cup of Karma does both), and through expressions of gratitude and welcome. A pot of tea and a vase of Morrice Florist flowers welcome visitors to her home.

2023 ISLAND NONPROFIT DIRECTORY
Sponsored by Martha's Vineyard Nonprofit Collaborative
Perhaps there is something about living on an Island, but the people of Martha’s Vineyard – both year-round and seasonal residents – have a well-deserved reputation for taking care of their own. Neighbors may squabble, but when someone is in crisis, petty disagreements are put aside and the community rallies to help.
That generosity of spirit is reflected in the more than 100 nonprofit organizations on the Island that address a wide spectrum of community interests and concerns. There are nonprofits that serve children and families, support the arts, provide health care, and promote conservation, housing, and social justice, to name a few. There are even nonprofits that help other nonprofits, offering training and directing resources where they are needed most.
To celebrate the work of all these groups, we created the Island Nonprofit Directory, for our annual Heart of the Vineyard edition of The Vine. This list, updated for 2023 both in this print edition and online at
vineyardgazette.com/island-nonprofit-directory, is a resource for anyone interested in participating in the Island’s helping community.
Participation can take many forms. Nonprofit organizations rely on volunteers to serve on boards and committees, to organize fundraising activities and in many cases to join with others in service, from gleaning leftover crops to working at a thrift shop to delivering meals to the homebound. Contact the organizations directly or check the volunteer opportunities section in the Vineyard Gazette.
For those who are able, donating to the Island’s nonprofit organizations is another important way to help. The organizations on this list are registered 501(c)(3) charities, which means your contributions are tax deductible.
We have made an effort to be comprehensive with this directory. If you would like to add a nonprofit to the directory or amend a listing, please email thevine@mvgazette.com.

AQUINNAH CULTURAL CENTER
The Aquinnah Cultural Center is an independent nonprofit that preserves, interprets, documents and promotes Aquinnah Wampanoag history, culture and contributions to the past, present and future.
Since 2006, the center has operated the Aquinnah Wampanoag Indian Museum, which is housed in the historic Wampanoag family homestead familiarly known as the Vanderhoop house for its longtime owner Edwin D. Vanderhoop and his family. Edwin was the first Native American to represent his town at the Massachusetts general court; many of his descendants still live in Aquinnah.
The house, located on the downslope side of Aquinnah Circle and perhaps the most photographed and painted house in Aquinnah, is listed
on the National Register of Historic Places. Through the collaboration of the Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank, the town of Aquinnah and the Aquinnah Cultural Center, the home was restored in a way that preserves its original purpose and allows the museum to display artifacts of traditional and 19th century Wampanoag culture and history.
In addition to opening the museum during the summer (there is no heat for winter programs), the center plans both in person and online programs that include art demonstrations, discussions with authors, film screenings, music concerts, conversation circles and presentations by the Wampanoag Language Reclamation Project and visiting members of other tribes.

THE YARD
It’s hard to name an influential modern choreographer or dance troupe working today that hasn’t visited The Yard since the Chilmark dance incubator was founded 50 years ago. Doug Varone? Check. Wondertwins? Check. Top tap dancer and Broadway choreographer Michelle Dorrance? Check and double check: she’s practically a regular.
Artists like these, and many more from the U.S. and abroad, come to The Yard for residencies where they can develop new work in relative seclusion from their mainland lives. Along the way, the dancers and performance artists share their progress with local audiences through classes, workshops and live shows. Some visiting dance groups have
even teamed up with Islanders on pieces developed over multiple residencies, such as the powerful Danza Orgánica-Wampanoag collaboration We Still Dance.
The Yard also hosts concerts and DJ dance parties, including a lively series of Pride events each June, and offers off-season residencies that include workshops in Island schools.
Currently seeking a new executive director and working on an overhaul of its Middle Road campus, The Yard continues to follow the vision of its late founder, choreographer Patricia Nanon, of “a playground without walls, a place to explore, to experiment, to construct … a space in which to come together and to be alone.”

THE COTTAGERS, INC.
Founded in 1956 by 10 Black women who owned homes in Oak Bluffs, The Cottagers, Inc. is now an organization of 100 women who actively support a range of civic programs.
In normal years, the Cottagers host fundraising events such as their annual house tour to support the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, student scholarships and other causes. But in 2022, the philanthropic group reached into their own pockets to present a $15,000 check to Harbor Homes, Inc., specifically to provide needed furnishings and program support for the newly purchased congregant house for low-income women on New York Avenue.
More recently, in her 2023 annual letter to members, president Olivia
Baxter announced an ongoing collaboration between The Cottagers, Inc. and Harbor Homes, Inc. to continue to work together to secure grants, funds and awards.
The Cottagers are currently engaged in a capital fundraising campaign to restore their unique historic meeting house on Pequot avenue in Oak Bluffs. The Cottagers purchased Cottagers Corner, a building which was once town hall, in 1968. It needs foundation work and restoration of architectural detail. The group has also committed to making the building ADA compliant so that generations of Cottagers and members of the Oak Bluffs community will continue to gather in it and enjoy it for years to come.

BIODIVERSITYWORKS
On an Island of beaches, who will speak for the shorebirds? The answer, for Martha’s Vineyard, is BiodiversityWorks, a nonprofit dedicated to protecting not only the birds, but the whole range of diverse creatures that call this Island home.
“We were both working as wildlife biologists on-Island back in 2011,” said Luanne Johnson (top left) in a recent joint interview with program co-founder Liz Olson (top right).
“We really found a need for an organization that focused specifically on wildlife on Island, no matter who owns the land.”
Due to the fragmented nature of Vineyard habitats, with housing and developments separating stretches of forested or otherwise wild land, some species have struggled in recent years. It is a pattern born out most recently, Luanne and Liz said, with
the black racer snake, the largest of the Island snake species. Racers have wide, seasonal ranges, travelling long distances to locate prey or find a place to hibernate. As habitats become more fragmented and more road crossings are necessary, roadkill events become more common.
Shorebirds are also a priority, and the group is now undertaking a study of woodcock and black skimmer populations. None of this is to the exclusion of those mammalian fliers, the bats, which are also under study.
Another groundbreaking project of BiodiversityWorks is the Martha’s Vineyard Atlas of Life (mval.biodiversityworks.org), where individuals can contribute photos and identifications of plant wildlife to an INaturalist database.
“A lot of our work happens because of the amazing community here,” Liz said.

ISLAND AUTISM GROUP
Island Autism began back in 2009, a grassroots effort led by Kate DeVane (above) and Marcy Bettencourt, two Island parents with kids on the autism spectrum. Since then, their early fundraising efforts through bake sales and auctions have grown into something far larger.
The first big step, Kate said in a recent interview, came as the group shifted their efforts to extracurriculars.
“We wanted to make sure kids on the spectrum, who maybe can’t access typical afterschool programs, have something to do in the afternoon,” she said. It’s a focus which benefited both kids and parents.
For most of the group’s existence, it had been looking for a permanent location for events. That all changed in 2020, when Island Autism Group
teamed up with the Land Bank to jointly purchase a 17-acre stretch of farmland in West Tisbury. In addition to providing the group a permanent hub for after-school activities, the purchase will also allow them to better serve the Island’s adult autistic community.
“Seventy-five percent of adults on the spectrum are either under- or unemployed, even though they have lots to contribute,” she said. Plans include the creation of a micro-farm for workforce training as well as the construction of 17 affordable housing units for adult autistic Islanders.
“We want to have people ripple out into the community,” Kate said, “and we also hope the community will come out here to join us as well.”

According to executive director Julia Kehoe, Health Imperatives prioritizes communities such as Martha’s Vineyard where there are huge wealth gaps. Last year, the Island clinic served more than 1,100 Island residents, 50 per cent of whom were uninsured or under-insured and 30 per cent of whom had limited English proficiency.

HARBOR HOMES OF MARTHA’S VINEYARD
Harbor Homes of Martha’s Vineyard was forged in 2019 to serve an overlooked group on the Island: the year-round homeless population.
“People don’t realize what it [homelessness] looks like,” said executive director Sue Diverio (above) in a recent interview with the Vineyard Gazette. “It’s a twoincome family with children who still can’t afford housing. It’s a mom experiencing domestic violence trying to leave a bad situation...Once people get past [the stigma] and realize these are everyday people who have gotten in bad circumstances, you can get them to understand that these people are a part of our community.”
For the last two years, Harbor
Homes has run a winter homeless shelter out of one of the Martha’s Vineyard Community Services buildings. More recently, the group received a $2.5 million grant from the Department of Housing and Community Development, allowing them to pursue the purchasing of a permanent home for the shelter.
“It will really change lives,” shelter coordinator Lisa Belcastro said. “It will give someone a place they can call home.”
In addition to the shelter, Harbor Homes also owns and operates two congregant houses on-Island, providing living spaces for low-income Islanders at risk of homelessness.

SAIL MV
For more than 30 years, Sail MV has worked to keep the tradition of maritime learning and practice alive on Martha’s Vineyard.
“We’re trying to get as many Island kids out on the water as possible,” said executive director John Kettlewell. “Our mission is to be able to provide education to every youth on-Island who wants it.”
It’s a mission they are well on their way to achieving; they now provide free sailing lessons to an estimated 425 Island kids each year, along with about 100 more seasonal students. The group also provides adult

The group recently received a $300,000 expansion grant from the MV Youth community fund. The money, John said, will in part go to upgrading their fleet to be more handicap-accessible, allowing for even more Island kids to get on the water. In addition, he said, they will be able to expand their programming to provide more free advanced classes. “It’s going to be really transformative for us,” he said.

Winter on the Vineyard really isn't so bad. Just ask Island photographers, who find a particular kind of beauty in the wide open spaces and ever-changing skies whether they're shooting in Edgartown or Aquinnah. Landscapes reveal themselves in a whole new way. It's easy to spot wintering birds in the bare-branched trees and along the windswept dunes. Whether it's a snowy owl, a flock of geese, or that rare bird – the snowday sledder – Island visitors and natives alike make the most of the quiet season. For more winter beauty, and occasionally a bird's-eye view of the Island, follow @vineyardgazette on Instagram.
