FROM THE EDITOR

WELCOME This spring I will serve as the matron of honor for my little sister, Elyse, for whom there are not enough words in the English language to convey my love. It’s the fourth time I’ve been asked to hold a bride’s bouquet, but the first time since I planned my own wedding and became editor of this magazine. With apologies to the others who I was deeply honored to serve and for whom I tried my very best, I feel like I’ve finally grown into the role. Over the past several years, I have immersed myself in the Martha’s Vineyard wedding community. I’ve spoken with countless planners, florists, caterers, photographers, and couples about their processes and best advice. I’ve memorized timelines and pored over thousands of photos. In the process, I’ve even developed a neat party trick. Almost without fail, I can look at an image from a recent wedding and identify all the local vendors involved. Though my sister isn’t particularly impressed by that skill, I am grateful for the opportunity to share with her everything else I have learned, and to help ease her pre-wedding stress. Together, we’ve been able to turn hundreds of photos and errant ideas into a cohesive vision, trim budgets based on recommendations that ran in these pages, and assemble a great team of vendors. When she confessed she wasn’t sure how to choose a photographer, I talked her through what she should be looking for and how to identify her photography style. That conversation served as the inspiration for the beginner’s guide to wedding photography that appears on page 40. I don’t share this story to sing my own praise, or to advertise my services. Rather, the experience reminded me how confused and disorganized I was while planning my own wedding. Almost no one begins this process knowing exactly what to do or what they want. At Island Weddings, I’ve devoted myself to the cause of making wedding planning easier for everyone, not just for those I love. So, after many years in the aisles and the trenches, here’s my best advice. Begin by gathering as much guidance as you can. This magazine and our website archives really are invaluable resources. Take time to reflect on what you want, not just what other people are doing. Hire a team of well-vetted experts, including a planner or day-of coordinator if you can afford it. Make decisions that make your life easier. Don’t stress about achieving the perfect wedding – there’s no such thing, no matter how hard you try. Strive instead to make it heartfelt. Finally, surround yourself with loved ones who will support you, listen to you, and help you achieve your goals. You don’t need a four-time maid of honor/ wedding magazine editor by your side to plan a great wedding – but I’d be lying if I said it didn’t help. My sister is lucky to have me, and I’m luckier still to have her. Congratulations to all who are recently engaged, including our own incredible Associate Editor Nicole Mercier. I wish you so much happiness,

Vanessa Czarnecki, Editor

The list of Island wedding planners continues to grow with the addition of two new companies: Martha’s Vineyard Weddings & Events (MVWE) and Island Dreams. Cristina Wiley, of MVWE, gained experience working with longtime wedding planner Lynn Buckmaster-Irwin. Jamie Newhouse, of Island Dreams, utilizes her background in architecture to create a “master plan” for your wedding day. For more information, visit vineyardweddings.com and islanddreamsmv.com.

LOVE IS SWEET

HAVE SPIRITS, WILL TRAVEL Two new mobile bars have hit Island roads to bring couples a funky alternative to the wedding bar scene. The Cocktail Caravan – a converted 1976 horse trailer – creates one-of-a-kind cocktails (and mocktails) utilizing hand-crafted mixers, syrups, and aromatics. The Bubbly Brit, a Citroen HY Van that got a makeover in London before journeying across the pond, can serve up both cocktails and champagne. Visit cocktailcaravanmv.com and thebubblybrit. com for details.

It’s not a Vineyard vacation without a trip to Back Door Donuts. The folks behind the popular Oak Bluffs bakery hope the same logic applies to a Vineyard wedding. This past summer they introduced a fun way to display their tasty treats at events with rentable, handmade doughnut walls. Each wall fits thirty doughnuts in flavors of your choice, from chocolate glazed and powdered, to party and buttercrunch. Add an order of their apple fritters and cinnamon rolls for even more dessert options. Visit backdoordonuts.com for more information.

HELP WANTED! Island Weddings is conducting a Martha’s Vineyard Wedding Survey to gauge how people get married on the Vineyard: when, where, and how much they typically spend. The confidential survey takes just five minutes but could help future couples save months of frustration. To participate, go to mvislandweddings.com/survey. Results will be published in an upcoming issue. 12 Martha’s Vineyard Island Weddings • Winter | Spring 2022

Randi Baird

Christopher Scantling and Akela Moore have history together. The two dated in high school but ended things in college. “We stopped speaking for twelve years and happened to see one another at a mutual friend’s birthday party in May of 2018,” said Christopher. After that chance encounter, they rekindled their friendship – and soon after that, their relationship. As a couple, they enjoy traveling. For the Fourth of July, they paid their first visit to Martha’s Vineyard. “I knew that I was going to pop the question that weekend,” Christopher said. After a meal at Nancy’s Restaurant in Oak Bluffs, they walked to the Summercamp hotel. There, Island photographer Randi Baird was waiting to capture the moment Christopher asked Akela to marry him. Afterward, they walked through the Martha’s Vineyard Camp Ground to take photos among the colorful cottages. The couple plans to marry in Brooklyn in October 2022.

EXPERT ADVICE

Jacqueline Aleace Photography

ASK THE EXPERT Joanna Krupnick of Order She Wrote illustrates why couples should hire a calligrapher for their wedding-day items. Calligraphy isn’t just for invitation suites these days. For Joanna Krupnick of Order She Wrote, no item or medium is out of the question when it comes to adding custom lettering, monograms, or even a crest. Over the past several years, she has honed her skills to offer couples a range of lettering styles and options for their application – from invitation suites, seating charts, and place cards, to menus, RSVP cards, thank you notes, and signage. Here, she answers questions about how to hire and best use a calligrapher for your wedding, as well as pricing and lead times for custom creations.

How did you get started with calligraphy? My mom actually gifted me a beginner’s set of a workbook and three nibs, saying she thought I’d be good at it! I had always tried to replicate various computer fonts and made faux calligraphy notes for everyone on their birthdays and special occasions. But I completely resisted the idea, so sure I wouldn’t be any good at it. But during a snowy Valentine’s Day weekend on Martha’s Vineyard several years ago, I was bored and stuck inside and decided to give it a go. I went to EduComp (miss you!) and got a set of plain old Crayola markers

14 Martha’s Vineyard Island Weddings • Winter | Spring 2022

(excellent markers I recommend for beginners, by the way) and that was it! By the end of the weekend, practicing nonstop, I was proud enough to photograph a page of my doodling to post on Instagram. What’s the most common type of work you produce for weddings: invitations, escort cards, signage? Most commonly I am asked to address the invitation envelopes. That was what I started out doing when I first began, and it’s still a huge part of my business now, probably tied for first place with place cards

and other day-of wedding items such as signage. How has your business and the projects you’ve taken on changed over the years? I’d say my business has certainly evolved from just weddings into a lot of fun inperson events. Events have me doing things like personalizing cards or monogramming gifts. These events are super fun since I get to be out in front of people, having conversations, and getting to work in some really fun places. How long does it take to create a custom piece? It depends on the piece. A custom invitation suite could take a few weeks to design before it goes to print. A custom sign can take a day or two, and handwritten vows or a poem take a few days to map out and then several hours for the actual writing. In general, my writing doesn’t take that long anymore (lots of practice!), but the planning and organizing to put it on the page seamlessly and spaced out is what can get very time-consuming.

Micaela Grace

so they take more time and thus cost a little more. What is included in a full invitation suite?

We’ve seen escort cards made from leaves, rocks, beach glass, shells, even fruit, and hand-lettered signs, cups, alternative guest book items, even clothing. What’s the most unusual or interesting item you’ve hand lettered? I love all of those mediums! One time I had to monogram a guitar for someone. That was really cool – also very nerve-racking! I also love hand-painting monograms and names on denim jackets. Those are really fun and I love seeing people wear them for years to come. How do you base your pricing? Is it by item, style, or time spent on it? My pricing is primarily based on the time it takes. Material costs are pretty straightforward using paints, brushes, nibs, and ink. Some mediums are obviously more expensive, but since that’s a choice the client gets to make, I focus on the difficulty and time involved. In terms of lettering styles, I have one or two styles that are considerably more difficult than my others,

A full invitation suite usually consists of the outer envelope (often with a liner) the invitation card, the RSVP card with envelope, and a details card or itinerary card of some sort. Some people consider the save the dates as part of the invitation suite as well. How many months in advance should a couple book a calligrapher?

Yes to all! For invitations I love to design wax seals, custom crests, and, of course, save the dates and thank you note stationery. I have a wonderful illustrator, Tiffany [Willey], who I commission for the really elaborate paintings, such as venues, maps, landscapes, etc. My painting style is much more homegrown and naïve, while Tiffany is the technically proficient one and just all around incredible. I love that we can offer both styles to choose from. If you can only afford spot calligraphy, where do you suggest a couple uses it?

It depends on what you would like to use them for. If you would like a calligrapher to design or address save the dates, you should book them out a year before the wedding. If you would like to start with the invitation design process, you should book them at least six months before your wedding. Three months at least to design, print, and send them out. If you need a calligrapher for the wedding-day items, three months before the wedding is recommended.

I say invest it in the couple’s names and the location on the invitation card. It’s the first thing their guests see, and the invitation card is the keepsake. (The RSVP card comes back to the couple!) Who doesn’t love seeing their name written in a unique and special way? Plus, you can reuse that calligraphy! Maybe use it on stationery, a custom address stamp, a guestbook cover, or even souvenir cups! Write out the bits you want your guests to remember in the calligraphy; whether it’s the location, the date, or even the dress code.

What other custom options can you offer couples? Crests? Maps? Illustrations?

GOOD BOY, BEST MAN Man’s (and woman’s) best friend increasingly has a role to play at the wedding. At Meghan Summers and Sean Ryan’s wedding at the Lambert’s Cove Inn in West Tisbury this past October, there was no young ring bearer. The honor of carrying the rings didn’t even belong to the best man. Instead, that task went to Meghan and Sean’s golden retriever, Addy, who was escorted partway down the aisle before being unleashed. She ambled her way toward Sean with the rings secured in a pouch on her collar. Though Addy’s star turn was

memorable to the guests in attendance and important to Meghan and Sean, it wasn’t a unique occurrence. For many couples, the choice of who to include in your wedding party is no longer limited to selecting your best man, maid of honor, groomsmen, and bridesmaids. Instead, couples are deciding whether – and to what extent – they want their beloved pets to be involved. Some are choosing to have them walk down the aisle or sit by their side. Others are deciding to leave the pets at home but incorporating

16 Martha’s Vineyard Island Weddings • Winter | Spring 2022

their likeness on escort cards or cocktail napkins, or naming signature drinks after them. Meghan and Sean opted for both. After delivering the rings, Addy posed for portraits and mingled with guests at the cocktail hour. “We had two signature cocktails and one of them was called the Addy,” said Sean. “She’s a light-haired golden retriever. The drink was vodka, soda, and lemonade, so it was exactly her color.” The reasons for incorporating a pet into

your wedding day are myriad, but for Sean the logic was simple. Addy is a part of his and Meghan’s family. “Wouldn’t you have your daughter in your wedding if you were getting married?” he asked. Of course, if the reasons for including pets in your wedding day are numerous, so are the pre-conditions and concerns. Those who want to bring pets to their wedding need to check with their venue to make sure it is allowed. They need to appoint someone, either a trusted wedding guest or a hired helper, to look after the animal so that the couple doesn’t spend their wedding day chasing after their dog or taking him on a walk. And they need to consider their pet’s temperament and level of involvement, and how it will affect the proceedings of the day. To keep the focus on the bride and groom, Meghan and Sean created a clear handoff plan. The best man walked Addy down the aisle, where she joined Sean for a few minutes before being led to the side by Meghan’s father. This allowed Addy to have her moment in the spotlight without the worry of her misbehaving or creating a distraction. Veterinarians Nate Ritter and Amanda Carlson say that’s a critical point when including a dog in your wedding day. Their beloved dog Hozier took part in the entirety of their June 2021 ceremony at the Sailing Camp in Oak Bluffs. The couple bought Hozier a blue tuxedo harness that they customized to match Nate’s suit. After being escorted down the aisle by the best man, Hozier spent the ceremony lying at Nate’s feet. “We rescued him while we were in veterinary school together,” said Nate. “Hozier is a very big part of our lives, and with his temperament [we knew] it was something he could handle.” But, cautions Nate, “Not all dogs are comfortable in costumes and clothes and have the right demeanor to sit there quietly during the ceremony.” “The dogs can get stressed out, so we try to keep them as calm and happy as possible,” said Heather Mangione, who with Kasia Piasecka owns Al Fresco Tails Pet Sitting. The pair recently expanded their overnight and walking business to include weddings after identifying a gap in the market. They work with clients to create a plan, provide pet transportation to the

wedding venues, and look after the animals. “We make sure they get a long walk before and have plenty of treats on hand during. Since the weddings are often outdoors in the summer heat, we always take lots of water breaks,” said Heather. Recently Al Fresco was hired to take care of Kelsie Tidman and JB Marston’s two dogs, Odin and Reagan, at their June 2021 wedding at the Harbor View Hotel in Edgartown. “Right before I went out, [Odin and Reagan] went and had their moment. I don’t think many people knew we were doing that,” said Kelsie. “They walked down to the front to JB, who was there waiting. Since they’re not the most patient dogs, we planned that they would then be walked to the side during the actual ceremony. “They took them to the room, gave them dinner and water, and tucked them into bed while we were at the reception,” Kelsie said of the Al Fresco team. “They have an app too where they gave updates...they had

water at this time, dinner at this time. It took all the stress of having the pets there away.” Of course, even with the best plans, when an animal is involved, something is apt to go awry. Amanda cautions couples to think through the decision. “If you’re going to have any animal in your wedding, you should have a sense of humor about it. You never know what’s going to happen,” she said, speaking from both professional and personal experience. “[Hozier] could have stopped halfway down and done his business. If you want everything to be 100 percent perfect, 100 percent of the time, you may not want an animal in your wedding, because you can’t promise that. But if you’re able to take things in stride and it’s important for you to have them as part of your day, and you have a good sense of humor about it, you can’t go wrong.” x —Abby Remer

ARIKA & GERALD JUNE 26, 2021 CEREMONY: St. Elizabeth Church

RECEPTION: Atria

STORY BY EMILY MEEGAN PHOTOS BY MILA LOWE Good luck, good communication, and plenty of time to plan allowed Arika Horn and Gerald “Jerry” Vissers to host a June 2021 wedding that reflected their classic yet unique style. During their four years of courtship, the couple’s weekend and week-long trips to the Vineyard became a way for them to relax and connect. Together, they created good memories of driving out on the Chappy beaches and enjoying romantic dinners at Atria in Edgartown. In August of 2019, Jerry proposed on the beach while they were visiting his family on Chappy. “He popped the question and surprised me with having my family fly out,” said Arika. “Martha’s Vineyard and Jerry’s family had always played a big part in our relationship. We couldn’t think of another place to get married.” To celebrate their engagement, the next night they ate at Atria. “It clicked while we were sitting at dinner that it would be a perfect place for our wedding,” she said. “The best luck of all was that when we checked with Atria about our preferred date, a week before July 4th, it wasn’t available for 2020. But the date was available for 2021,” said Jerry. “I looked at Arika and asked her if she would be okay with that long of an engagement. She said yes.” The long engagement turned out to be a blessing, and gave the couple time to coordinate their casually elegant white, gold, and green color scheme, which they carried over into the bridesmaids’ dresses and groomsmen’s suspenders. Atria owner Greer Thornton provided a preferred vendor list to guide the couple in making decisions. “We had time to focus on all the details, and time to get the money together for the vendors,” said Jerry. “It really worked out well.” The months of planning resulted in a perfect day, with one unexpected delight, suggested by their photographer Mila Lowe. She recommended a walk down Main Street right after the ceremony. “That was one of the best parts!” said Arika. “It was just Jerry, myself, and Mila. It was like a mini-parade, just thirty minutes together to calm down before we went to the reception.” The honking and applause for the couple was so loud that shopkeepers came out to see what was happening. “I’ve never felt so important in my life,” Jerry said with a laugh. “It was so much fun.” x

SYDNEY & ALEX SEPTEMBER 5, 2020 + JUNE 26, 2021 2020 CEREMONY + RECEPTION: Private Home

2021 PARTY: Chickemmoo Farm

STORY BY NICOLE GRACE MERCIER PHOTOS BY CHRISTINE SARGOLOGOS Sydney Murray and Alex Makhotin are firm believers that things happen for a reason. The couple, who dated for four years before getting engaged, intended to have a black-tie wedding with 250 guests at the Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury in September of 2020. But when the pandemic hit, causing them to reconfigure their plans, they devised a new arrangement that better reflected who they are as a couple. First, they decided to postpone the wedding to June of 2021 to keep most of their vendors on the books. But after some discussion, Sydney and Alex agreed they didn’t want to wait to get married. With the help of their wedding planner Doriana Klumick of Plan It Martha’s Vineyard, they opted to host an intimate ceremony in September at Sydney’s family’s home on East Chop. On the day of her wedding, Sydney got ready in her childhood bedroom. In lieu of the formal dress she had originally ordered, she wore a white jumpsuit she found on Instagram. “I wanted to be a little edgy,” she said. Their vows, exchanged between two large trees, was a highlight for Alex. “We did personal vows, which, combined with the backyard setting, really embodied the essence of our relationship – effortless love, laughter, and happiness at home,” he said. Afterward, a sit-down dinner on the porch was prepared by caterer Shane Tank of Premier Chef Services. A white and blue color palette played out on the tables (including in the menus designed by Alex) and in the flowers by Justin LaVigne of Of The Vine. Nine months later, a pared-down list of friends and family came together to celebrate Sydney and Alex’s marriage. In the process of changing their wedding date, they lost their venue, but were able to secure Chickemmoo Farm in West Tisbury through a family friend. A Vineyard clambake, again prepared by caterer Tank, was served. Florist LaVigne was tapped a second time to create the centerpieces – this time with “bursts of color.” After planning two celebrations far from their original vision, the couple agree that both outcomes made for better memories with their loved ones. “Looking back, [with] 250 people, I don’t know if we would have had the same type of intimate reactions with our closest friends and family,” said Sydney. “And to me, that was the absolute best part of it.” x

MARTINA & ALEXANDER SEPTEMBER 10, 2021 CEREMONY: Old Whaling Church

RECEPTION: Edgartown Yacht Club Tennis Courts

STORY BY SUSAN CATLING PHOTOS BY RANDI BAIRD Alexander Wolff’s family has something of a tradition when it comes to weddings. His family has summered on the Vineyard for three generations, and his parents and siblings were all married in Edgartown. Alexander hoped to follow in their footsteps, so as soon as he decided to propose to Martina Montalbetti, he began putting the pieces in place. He chose a date and secured the Old Whaling Church and the Edgartown Yacht Club. All he needed next was a “yes,” which Martina happily provided. She also eagerly supported Alexander’s vision for their wedding. “While I was generously given the option to choose wherever in the world I would like for the wedding to occur, and was told these venues only held security deposits, I too wanted to be a part of his history on the beautiful Island that the Wolff family introduced me to,” she said. In an ironic twist of familiar fate, however, their plans were upended by the pandemic. In April of 2020, with their wedding six months away, they decided to postpone their celebration by almost a year. Then, two weeks before the new date, an indoor mask mandate was reinstated. Martina and Alexander opted to move the reception from the Edgartown Yacht Club to the club’s tennis courts, which meant they would now require tents, generators, mobile bathrooms, outdoor catering equipment, lighting, and more staff. As if that weren’t enough, the rehearsal dinner was cancelled when the chef contracted Covid. “Within a matter of hours, Christian and Greer Thornton of Atria saved the day and adapted our menu,” she said. By the morning of the wedding, they thought they were in the clear. And then, ants! An infestation discovered at the tennis courts sent Martina racing to the hardware store for ant spray. With the help of family and friends, the wedding became a memorable group effort. “I still laugh thinking about the photos I have of all of them pitching in to help on the week of the wedding – gluing moss down to foam boards for our escort card table, sticking candles into hurricanes, organizing and personalizing the menus,” she said. Despite all the hurdles, the ceremony unfolded perfectly and the couple made it to their first dance. “We looked into each other’s eyes and without saying a word we both knew, we had done it!” Martina said. “All the hard work paid off and we had the best night of our entire lives.” x Winter | Spring 2022 • Martha’s Vineyard Island Weddings 29

GWENDOLYN & JAMES JULY 30, 2021 CEREMONY + RECEPTION: Private Home

STORY BY ERIN RYERSON PHOTOS BY LARISA STINGA Gwendolyn Tetirick and James Flexner were organizing a romantic Italian wedding for September 2021 but, like so many other couples, the pandemic threw a wrench in those plans. Rather than stress about it, the couple decided to push back their Lake Como nuptials for a year and focus on something smaller and closer to home. Gwendolyn had long dreamed of eloping and immediately recognized this as an opportunity to have a small, intimate wedding. And so, on July 30, 2021, Gwendolyn and James tied the knot at Sepiessa Point, which was the very first place they visited on their first trip to the Island together. Afterward, they celebrated at the West Tisbury home of the groom’s parents surrounded by fewer than twenty of their nearest and dearest. The bride works in fashion and brought that sense into her bridal look. “I tried on a ton of white dresses! But I didn’t feel like me. I felt like a bride. I wanted to feel more like myself,” Gwendolyn explained. Knowing she’d have a long, uneven walk down the aisle at Sepiessa Point, she didn’t want a dress that she’d be tripping over. She landed on a nude Oscar de la Renta midi dress with jewel embellishments. That beautiful walk down the aisle turned out to be one of her favorite moments of the day. “It was just so perfectly romantic,” she said. James concurred: “I will never forget seeing Gwendolyn walk down the aisle. I was really glad it was a small group; it felt like we were alone.” After a brief ceremony officiated by a good friend of the couple, they retreated to the groom’s family home for dinner under the stars. With the help of her mother-in-law, Gwendolyn brought a vision to life. “I didn’t want to overdecorate a place that’s so beautiful,” she said. But she did allow herself some small extravagances to achieve a “secret garden” feel for the dinner. Miniature chandeliers sourced in New York City, where the couple lives, were strung from a tree branch and brought intimacy to the setting. Blooms sourced from the Island and white orchids from New York lined the table. After a dinner the bride says she will never forget, prepared by V. Jaime Hamlin and Sons, guests lingered at the table until after dark and enjoyed cocktails on the porch. “We’ve had drinks and conversations on that porch hundreds of times,” Gwendolyn said. “It felt like being home.” x

MEGAN & DANIEL JUNE 19, 2021 CEREMONY + RECEPTION: The Captain R. Flanders House

STORY BY SYDNEY BENDER PHOTOS BY JOCELYN FILLEY Flowers make Megan Wholey smile. “I buy fresh flowers every week; it’s my one treat in adulthood,” Megan, a student of fashion design at Parsons School of Design in New York City said. “I have always loved flowers.” So it was no surprise to anyone that knew her, especially her fiancé Daniel “Danny” Garin, that when the time came to plan a June wedding on Martha’s Vineyard, flowers would take center stage. “Danny knows I love flowers – all flowers, any flower he gets me makes me very happy.” The couple hired florist Aubrey Sirois of Aubrey Maria Designs, who drew inspiration from her own love of flowers and the way they can both create and evoke memories. “Aubrey played a big role,” Megan said. “I told her I wanted to incorporate a lot of different flowers for the wedding and for it to feel kind of like we were at a flower market.” She delivered. Big blooms, tiny gypsophila, ballerina pink peonies, stems of lavender, lush roses, Island hydrangeas – “There were so many different flowers, it was perfect,” Megan said. The bride also dreamed up a make-your-own bouquet bar for guests to take home at the end of the night. “Guests at weddings appreciate activities,” she said. “I provided vases for everyone. We bought a lot of little ones and then we lined them up next to the flowers for guests.” It was an activity, décor, and favor all wrapped into one. The Captain R. Flanders House in Chilmark was an exceptional venue, Megan said, as the green acre farm allowed for a foolproof garden party backdrop. Other highlights included the horah, the traditional Jewish wedding dance, and mismatched china for place settings rented from Big Sky Tent and Party Rentals. “I wasn’t someone who thought about their wedding for a long time,” Megan said, so she took suggestions from vendors while incorporating her own passion for design. She also tapped Island Alpaca to bring their furry, rentable friends to mingle with guests. “Seeing everyone enjoy the flower stand and the alpacas was very special,” she said. When it comes to planning a wedding, Megan said to get creative and do things that will make you and your partner happy. “It’s funny because while I was planning, people would say, ’Don’t waste money on flowers, nobody will pay attention to them.’ And I would just say, ’Even if they don’t pay attention to them, I want to go all out on the flowers, this is for me! This is for us!’” x Winter | Spring 2022 • Martha’s Vineyard Island Weddings 37

A BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO

WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY Everything you always wanted to know about choosing a photographer, including all the questions you didn’t know you need to ask. BY VANESSA CZARNECKI

hances are good that you’ve never hired a professional photographer before. And it’s true: it’s not a decision that you want to make lightly. But while choosing a photographer isn’t as straightforward as, say, selecting your cake flavor, it doesn’t have to be an arduous task. Here, we walk you through the process of choosing the right person for the job and ensuring you end up with photographs you will cherish through the years.

Determine your photography style If you’ve never paid attention to photography styles before, you’re not alone. Most people evaluate photographs based on the subject. They look at wedding photos and think, “Do I like that wedding dress or that shade of flowers?” But when choosing a photographer, you need to look beyond the content (which, after all, you can change to suit your own style). Instead, ask yourself: “Do I like the photograph itself?” With some practice, you will begin to recognize that each photographer has a particular style, which functions as his or her calling card. Some prefer light and airy styles filled with muted pastels; others gravitate toward vibrant hues,

dark and moody tones, or vintage-style sepia tints. The key is to figure out what you and your partner want. If you aren’t sure, refer to the wedding photographs you saved on Instagram and Pinterest and search for commonalities. Bear in mind that there is a difference between shooting and editing style, says photographer Tim Correira. Shooting style refers to the types of images a photographer might take and how they compose them. (Think: formal, artsy, candid, etc. Most photographers employ several styles depending on the circumstances.) A photographer’s editing style, on the other hand, is more obvious, and is likely to “change more quickly than shooting

42 Martha’s Vineyard Island Weddings • Winter | Spring 2022

styles” over time, says Correira. “‘Light and airy,’ ‘dark and moody’ – those are like Instagram buzzwords for editing styles.” There’s no best photography style, only personal preferences, but you want to choose the one that complements the tone of your day. If, for example, you envision bright flowers that form a focal point, look for a photographer whose editing style won’t dampen those pops of color. If you’re planning a black-tie affair, you might gravitate toward a photographer who is well-versed in formal poses and utilizes a classic or film style. Consider the details you’ve selected, as well as the particulars of your venue. Finally, if you’re worried that your

photos will appear dated in a few years’ time, you can’t go wrong with a classic approach. Correira points to some of the Instagram filter styles that were once popular and now seem passé. “Five, ten, twenty years from now, the more stylized your photos are, the more dated they are going to appear,” he says. “A classic style is always going to be good.”

Explore your options Once you’ve figured out your preferred photography style, it’s time to compile a short list of candidates that fit the bill. If you have recently married friends whose photos you liked, you can ask them for suggestions. Likewise, if you’re working with a wedding planner, he or she will suggest several preferred candidates. But if you’re going it alone (or just want to know all your options), you’ll want to turn to a comprehensive directory, such as the Vendor + Resource Guide on page 62, which includes all the photographers who regularly work on the Vineyard. Take the time to review each photographer’s portfolio and social

media pages, which will help you get a feel for the types of weddings they enjoy capturing and what they consider to be their best work. Remember also to look beyond the photographs, especially if you haven’t received a personal or professional recommendation for the photographer. Check the “about me” page on their website, do your research, and search for online reviews. You want to weed out anyone who doesn’t look like a credible, experienced vendor with satisfied clients and specific wedding experience. “The most important thing you can look for in a photographer is a recommendation that you can know and trust,” says Correira.

Reach out to top candidates After you’ve identified at least three photographers you like, it’s time to send introductory emails. The letter should be tailored to each individual – no form letters, please – and explain what you like about their work, where and when you intend to marry, as well as an inquiry about availability on your wedding date

and an estimate of pricing options. Many photographers, in turn, will ask for additional information about you. “I ask them to show a few photos of inspiration or create a mood board of images to see what they like and don’t like,” says Island photographer Mila Lowe. Although every photographer operates differently, if your date is available and the price range is within your budget, most will send full galleries for you to review. You want to make sure the galleries are from recent weddings the photographer has shot from start to finish – ideally at your own or a similar venue so that you can get an accurate idea of how he or she would capture your own celebration. “If you like some of the photos but you don’t like some of the others, that should tell you something,” says Correira. “Anyone can take a dozen great photos

out of 1,500 and send you those. You want a photographer to say, ‘Here is a wedding I did at the Harbor View in September. This is exactly what the clients got and you are welcome to look through it.’”

Schedule a meeting Assuming you like what you’ve seen so far, it’s time to take your relationship to the next level. “I like to schedule a quick call when couples inquire to hear about their plans and see if we’re a good fit,” says Island photographer Jocelyn Filley. “It’s all about chemistry. If you have good chemistry, you’ll have a great time working together.” Photographer Larisa Stinga echoes those sentiments: “My advice that I always give my couples is to make sure they vibe well with their photographer. Even if the photographer is the most amazing and talented one out there, you want to make sure there is a chemistry. The photographer is the third wheel through the day. You better like their energy and personality.” Of course, these meetings aren’t all about shared jokes and good rapport. You also need to discuss the details. If you’ve already researched your candidates, you can dispense with many of the 100+ questions that guides such as The Knot suggest you ask. Instead, use this time to talk about your vision and expectations. Do you have your heart set on a first look portrait session? Is there a specific shot list you want your photographer to capture? Tell them about it, and make sure they are on board. You’ll also want to discuss different wedding-day packages: what each photographer’s fee entails, the prospective timeline of the day, how many hours and locations you’d like them to cover (eight hours is the most popular option), and whether a second photographer will be on hand to capture additional angles. Don’t skip the nitty-gritty details. Make sure you know exactly what you will receive when the photos are finalized, when you should expect to receive them, who owns the rights to the photos, and what happens in the event of a cancellation or postponement – the latter is especially important in the age of Covid.

“Managing expectations with clients is one of the most important things and it’s how you’re going to prevent people from being unhappy later,” Correira says. But he also urges you to be direct. “The best way for me to do what you want is for you to tell me what you want.”

Trust your intuition If you’ve done your research, met with each candidate, explored their fee structures, and made your pros and cons lists, all that’s left to do is make the choice official. Remember: you are not obligated to hire a photographer just because you met with them. You want to choose the one who is the best fit. The photographer wants that for you too. “The vast majority of problems that clients have with photographs, and photographers have with clients is just that they weren’t a good fit to start with,” says Correira, “and that’s because photography is so subjective.” “If you love what you are seeing and hearing from previous clients and have a good rapport, then I think that person is a great choice,” says Filley. After you’ve made your decision, reach out to the photographer and ask him or her to send you a proposal based on the details that you’ve discussed. Read it carefully; this is your legal recourse should anything go wrong! If you’re happy with it, sign it and send it back with a deposit to hold the date.

Follow up as the date approaches The amount of contact you have with your photographer after signing the contract will vary based on the individual and whether you have booked an engagement session. “It really depends on the couple,” says Filley. “Sometimes they seek out my advice a lot through the planning process and sometimes I hardly hear from them until we get close to their wedding date.” In almost all cases, the photographer will email you a questionnaire that is due one month before the wedding. The purpose of the questionnaire is to finalize details, such as locations, times, vendors, and contact information; as well as to gather specific family and friend groupings you want to capture and any information your photographer should

44 Martha’s Vineyard Island Weddings • Winter | Spring 2022

be made aware of, such as divorced or deceased parents. This information helps photographers draft a timeline that can be shared with you and your vendors. “Every wedding is different, as is every budget,” says Island photographer Kelley DeBettencourt. “I work with my clients on their timeline in order to get the most out of our time together. Sometimes we need to bump up the cake cutting or dances to fit into a tighter schedule.” Roughly one week before the event, your photographer will likely check in to discuss any last-minute changes or weather-related concerns.

Enjoy the day The hard part is over! At last, it’s time to relax, trust in your vendors, and have fun. Before the wedding day portrait session, Stinga lets her couples know she doesn’t expect them to be models or look a certain way. “I encourage them to forget any image they have in mind from the internet and just focus on each other and on the experience.…The way I create an image is to think in my head about how I want it to look composition-wise, place them where I want them to be, in the best lighting, and then distract them with questions and directions so they forget I’m taking pictures.” But if a couple ever finds themselves in a pose or position that doesn’t feel natural, she wants them to speak up. “I remind them that they don’t have to perform or be anything but themselves.” Of course, for all the attention paid to portraits, they make up only a small portion of the images from your big day. “I focus on capturing candid moments...,” says Lowe. “For me, photography is as much an art of light as it is an invitation for people to relax, be open, feel free to express who they are, and how beautiful and real the emotions between couples or families can be.” Proper planning allows her to capture both the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moments and pre-planned events. Her wedding-day advice applies equally to brides and to photographers. “Make sure you have established a relationship and trust,” says Lowe. “Go with the flow, but be mindful of the small details and fleeting moments that make these days truly special.” x

LEAP FIRST OR LOOK FIRST? The pros and cons of scheduling a portrait session prior to your ceremony. Let’s get one thing settled: it’s not bad luck to see your fiancé before the start of the wedding. That notion dates to the time of arranged marriages, when negotiating partners (read: the parents) worried the bride or groom might split if they caught a glimpse of each other with time to spare. While the long-forgotten origins of that superstition may be unsavory, the resulting tradition of waiting to see your partner is still a beloved part of weddings. In fact, it remained virtually unchecked until recently, when pre-ceremony “first look” portrait sessions surged in popularity. Today, the debate over whether to shoot first, marry later provokes strong opinions from either side. Those in favor of an aisle reveal say it is often a highlight of the wedding: the emotion in the room is palpable, and the photos are often unbeatable. “I think there’s something special about seeing each other for the first time at the ceremony,” says photographer Jocelyn Filley. She also likes that it allows her to break up portrait sessions, with separate and small-group portraits prior to the ceremony and newlywed portraits after. “I really love the energy of portraits right after the ceremony,” says Filley. Proponents of a first look session make similar claims. It allows you to take pictures when you look your best, just after you’ve finished getting ready; it creates an intimate moment between you and your partner away from prying eyes; and it

allows you to spend more time with your guests at the cocktail hour, especially if you follow a first look with group portraits, says Mila Lowe. Fellow photographer Larisa Stinga is even more enthusiastic. “Hell yes,” she says when asked if she encourages a first look. “It’s an intentional moment that you can have with your partner on your wedding day. You can share intimate vows, letters, tears, and it’s the most unique and beautiful moment, in my opinion.” It’s a myth that walking down the aisle will be less special if you already see each other, she says. “[Couples] still get emotional and share tears when they realize ‘it’s happening.’” Despite any personal opinions, most photographers say they will follow a couple’s lead, and that the decision of whether to schedule a first look should be based on logistics and emotion. “I don’t stress it either way because there are advantages and disadvantages to both,” says Tim Correira. For him, the decision comes down to whether you want to arrive at the ceremony together or delay that special moment. If the couple thinks they might be anxious prior to the ceremony, a first look could soothe their nerves. If not, it might not be necessary. “It’s important to remember that everyone is different, and that’s okay,” says Correira. In other words, a photographer’s preference shouldn’t influence your plans. Neither should debunked superstitions. – VC Winter | Spring 2022 • Martha’s Vineyard Island Weddings 45

Larisa Stinga urges couples to get glammed up for an engagement session and visit areas of the Island they won’t have time to explore on their wedding day. One of her favorite spots to bring clients, such as Jackie Ostendorf and Zach Aziz, is Moshup Beach in Aquinnah. 46 Martha’s Vineyard Island Weddings • Winter | Spring 2022

DON’T SKIP THESE TIPS Island professionals share their expert advice for achieving stunning, successful wedding and engagement photographs. Act fast: “Book your photographer as soon as possible so that you can get the person you want for the date you have selected,” says Kelley DeBettencourt. “Especially for Saturdays in September!”

of the day are the ones that really tell the story, so I want to make sure I always have time for those.”

Don’t scrimp: “Photography is probably the most important investment in your wedding day. But while budget plays a huge role in decision making, you should not pick your photographer based on price only,” says Larisa Stinga. This is also valid advice for the photographers, she notes. Rather than accepting every paying client, a photographer needs to ensure a good fit.

Cater your requests to the photographer: Clients sometimes send inspiration photos that would be impossible to replicate on the Vineyard due to vastly different conditions, such as portraits taken in the middle of the desert, says Correira. Instead, it’s more helpful to show examples from your photographer’s own portfolio that he or she can easily recreate, he notes. “My favorite is a bride will make a PDF of photos I’ve taken and say, ‘These are ten photos that you’ve taken recently. We love these.’”

Think local: The Island is a particular place with specific travel considerations, says Tim Correira. “You should hire someone who knows what it takes to get there, which is especially important if the boats are cancelled or there’s a possibility of a hurricane. If you are importing a photographer from off-Island, have them arrive a few days in advance.”

Don’t forget about film: Many photographers have transitioned to digital-only photography, which allows them to shoot more photos at a lower cost. But for lovers of film and its idiosyncrasies, there’s no comparison. “There is so much I love about film. It’s the thing that excites me most about photography,” says Filley. “It keeps me truly present in the moment…and the results are unparalleled.”

Hire a second photographer if you can afford it: “Having a second shooter is a great way to allow your photographer to be in two places at once, and it’s a good idea if you have a larger wedding,” says Stinga. “But the main advantage is that a second shooter allows your main photographer to be more creative, to seek images that they wouldn’t have time to capture.” Other photographers agree: if both parties are getting ready at the same location or your wedding is less than fifty people, you can probably go without a second shooter, says Correira. Otherwise, it’s worth the additional (moderate) expense.

Consider the timing for portraits: Every photographer has a favorite time of day to shoot portraits. Lowe prefers “the last hour or two hours before sunset and the first hour or two hours after sunrise, known as ‘the golden hour.’” Stinga says “‘the secret sauce’ to her cinematic-style images is blue light”– a soft, even light that lasts about ten to fifteen minutes after the sun goes down. You probably like your chosen photographer because of the way they work with light. Make sure to discuss with them their ideal time to take portraits and plan accordingly.

Spring for the engagement session: An engagement session prior to the wedding is a great way “to learn more about each other, get comfortable and familiar with my style and the flow of the session, and see if they like the images and which ones are their favorite,” says Mila Lowe. Use your hair and makeup trial to your full benefit: Stinga takes the engagement session/photo trial one step further. “I encourage my brides to use their hair and makeup trial for their engagement session,” she says. “That way they can see what it will look like in the pictures and also feel fabulous.” Create a shot list – within reason: Photographers want you to be upfront with them about your expectations, but sometimes a general conversation can be more productive than a list of 100 specific shots you want them to capture. “I discourage a lengthy list because then I’m running around trying to orchestrate things and I don’t have a chance to see what’s happening,” says Jocelyn Filley. “The little unpredictable moments

Think about backgrounds: Not sure where to take your portraits? Lowe says consider what you like. “Are you beach lovers? Do you prefer to go for a hike and be in the woods? Do you want a classic location that you can tell is Martha’s Vineyard, like a lighthouse?” When in doubt, you can’t go wrong with a location that offers visual diversity. “I like wooded areas that go up near the beach,” says Correira. “A beach that’s just a beach is great, but it’s one note.” Stick close to your ceremony: While your portrait background is important, you don’t want to spend your whole day in the car. “Every minute is precious. It’s going to fly by,” says Correira. “Engagement photos, that’s the time to drive around, go to the [Gay Head] cliffs, try out different locations,” he says, noting that it’s an hour and a half round trip from Edgartown to Aquinnah. Don’t forget about crowds: If you’re camera shy, you may want to avoid busy locations and times of day for portraits, says Stinga. “You want to make sure you can have intimacy to open up, to be vulnerable, and to feel relaxed. Some people will not show emotion in public and a crowded place will definitely kill the vibes.” Winter | Spring 2022 • Martha’s Vineyard Island Weddings 47

the decisive moments Lighting, composition, equipment: all play a role in achieving beautiful photographs. But perhaps nothing is so important, said famed photojournalist Henri Cartier-Bresson, as knowing when and what to photograph to convey the significance and emotion of a fleeting moment. If you want to fully encapsulate and memorialize your big day, these are the images you don’t want your photographer to miss.

T

he term “elopement” has evolved over the years – and especially in the time of Covid. It no longer necessarily implies running away to be married in secret, but instead that you’ve chosen to have a more intimate celebration. If you and your partner want to keep your wedding day small, you don’t have to miss out on the experience of holding a stunning bouquet, dancing to your first song, or cutting into your cake. To prove just that, Island wedding vendors came together at the Tashmoo Spring Building in Vineyard Haven for a styled photo shoot that packs a big punch, from the flowers and the food to the photography, drinks, and dancing.
