CULTURAL CENTER

BRITO BROCA São Paulo, 2016 - 2017

type | professional independent project assignments | historical research, project for renovation and expansion, illustrations and renders about | When the landmark of a neighborhood is a hypermarket and not a public library in front of it, it means that something is very wrong in the way the library performs its cultural function in the society. Designed in 1965 by renowned architects and engineers, the Brito Broca Journalist Library faces today a lamentable idleness in its “modern” spaces. Disconnected in the essence of any contemporary sense of representativeness, what should be a place of imagination and creativity today hardly resists the classification of “white elephant.” The urban situation aggravates the diagnosis: isolated from the street by a high height and oppressed by a violent and noisy avenue; it is necessary to redefine the building, to offer something different to the population. The proposed exo-structure is a new element in the landscape, which represents the transformation of the library into a cultural center. This structure provides new uses: besides being a technical support (elevator, staircases, entrances), it can also be used for artistic interventions.

2 | A new coordinating axis overlap the building: conscious and respectful of the modernist historical layer, but the rupture of orthogonality is necessary for contemporaneity.

3 | Metal structure, spatial structure, creative and functional structure: the circulation, the studying, the reading and the collection merge to each other, so there is an optimization of the space and a versatility of usages.

1 | Orthogonality and compartmentation: the central wall divides the building into two disjointed spaces, which becomes an old solution that results in a waste of space.

In 1965 the library was built in a region that was being expanded. 50 years later, this neighborhood does not have another cultural building of regional relevance. Nevertheless, Brito Broca is practically not used by the population nowadays.

As a library, its space is almost always empty and has no spontaneous public usage. But the public attends other specific cultural activities when they are scheduled.

Infiltration problems in the roof and in the water tank that contaminates the water: old metal pipes.

The original courtyard was occupied by an expansion that blocked the natural ventilation and light of the ground floor.

ANALYSIS: STATE OF CONSERVATION

7

Many poorly assisted renovations and maintenance damaged the facade; it is planned the recovery of the original ceramic tiles. The project plans the recovery of the original roof design.

Fifty years ago, Mutinga Avenue was a quiet place, but nowadays this avenue connects several neighborhoods from the north to the center of the city. Many buses and trucks pass through narrow lanes. The narrow sidewalk, vegetation and uneven access through a small staircase do not encourage the spontaneous use of the library.

EMIA

São Paulo, 2016 - 2017 what | professional collaborative work in GTO structural calculation: engr. Gabriel P. Meireles and engr. Rodrigo P. Silva colaboration: Marco Aurelio Scriboni (intern) assignments | Historical research; architectural project; truss reinforcement project; project for the electrics, lan, hydraulics and light design; illustrations and drawings; Legal approval. about | This 1920s house hosts the Municipal School of Artistic Initiation (EMIA), a public school that offers classes on music, dance, theater and visual arts for children from 5 to 12 years old. Unlike Brito Broca Library, the concept here was to carry out an “invisible” renovation: the project contemplated the complete overhaul of the wooden roof structure, including reinforcements. Also, a new reinforced concrete slab was designed to support all its new electrical, network, hydraulics and internet facilities, making maintenance much simpler. The slab and new beams were calculated by the engineers of the GTO and there was the collaboration of architects of the DPH, Department of Historical Heritage.

The primary goal was to renovate the house respecting its historical values, as the heritage charts recommend: an “invisible intervention”. From the outside, the intervention cannot be perceived, preserving the original reading of the house; from the inside, the new concrete structure will be subtly exposed.

Ditolvo) Construction inspection and technical tests for mortar composition, wall finish texture and painting about |Located in Lapa, a former industrial district of São Paulo, the old paper mill Melhoramentos is one of the buildings that represent the dynamic cultural and economic formation of the city in which thousands of immigrants from all over the world arrived at the beginning of the 20th century to participate in our “Industrial Revolution.” In this building, listed in 2009 along with other factories, was the former headquarters of Improvements. Today Lapa has become a residential neighborhood, and the old factory plant will give rise to new apartment buildings. With a project of the architect Guilherme Torres, the Melhoramentos headquarters is being converted into a mixed commercial building. This retrofit project was recently awarded in the “A ‘Design Award & Competition 2017-2018” in the category “ Cultural Heritage and Culture Industry Design Award.”

Partial Demolition of the eave As it is a listed building, any intervention on it must be approved by CONPRESP (Municipal Council for the Preservation of Historical Heritage). The consultancy served to guide the architect responsible for the retrofit concerning the concepts of restoration, which ended up adjusting his initial ideas and, therefore, obtaining the necessary legal approval for the construction.

FACHADA 04 - TELA PROJETO

Perforated

For example, the intervention concept of Metal Sheet the architect Guilherme Torres intended the installation of a perforated metal sheet on two entire facades, and for that, it would be necessary to demolish part of the existing eaves. In addition, because the original windows did not meet current thermal insulation needs, the architect proposed the complete demolition of the exterior walls to install new horizontal windows.

new horizontal windows

1

In the project meetings we suggested: maintenance of original rain pipes; the maintenance of the original window frames changing only the window by another of contemporary design; that the perforated screen design must come from the building’s architecture and not ignore it; the size of the holes should allow a subtle reading of the original design of the façade; among others. As the concepts of reversibility, distinguishing and ambiance was respected, the project was approved by Conpresp and is now under construction.

(Ana Marta Ditolvo and Marina Zocca) Structure: Fernanda Rós; Restoration consulting: Kátia Magri Renders and illustrations: NADA (Vinicius L. Greter and Gabriel Kieling) about | The Monsões were river expeditions departing from the city of Porto Feliz (Happy Harbor) carrying supplies, weapons, and tools to supply mining settlements in the interior of the continent, contributing to the formation of the Brazilian territory. In this rammed earth building constructed in 1850 by the Empire, the State Government intends to create a museum to tell this story also could functioning as a catalyst for the renovation of the historic center. From the main foundations of Cesare Brandi’s Theory of Critical Restoration, i.e., distinguishability, reversibility, minimal intervention and compatibility of materials, it was decided to preserve this house of the seventeenth century as it stands today, respecting its historical evolution. Despite some changes in the facade, its spatial configuration and construction techniques are rare records of that era.

On the other hand, adopting other documents, like The Declaration of Amsterdam of 1975, in the outside area a total redesign was proposed, qualifying the lot for an urban passage. A monument has been added to represent the Monsoons: from a water mirror of calm and crystalline water that represents the city of Porto Feliz, the water runs through a kind of aqueduct for which it gains speed with a certain notion of danger and adventure.

ENVIRONMENT MUSEUM

MUMA

Rio de Janeiro, 2010 what | collaborative competition with Ilan Szklo: drawings, architetonic concept and texts ; Rodrigo Gianoni: drawings, architetonic concept, 3D modeling and photoshop; Eduardo da Mata: facade development, 3D modeling and render personal assignments Structural and architetonic concept, drawings and photoshop about | The Museum of the Environment is housed in an old palace in the Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro. This old building no longer allows the installation of new expositive technologies, and then this contest was launched to predict its expansion. Our design party tries to respect the historic buildings to the maximum while at the same time intending to enter this landscape with a high concentration of trees from the original Atlantic forest. Behind the dense forest, the façade made of vivid ceramic panels in orange and yellow colors would be confused as flowers and fruits of the landscape itself; as the visitor approaches the building, it is revealed. In addition, ceramic panels help regulate the temperature in a place with high humidity and heat. As in nature, we often do not understand how certain geological and plant formations are formed overcoming gravity and adverse situations. Therefore, structurally the building tries to offer some sense of surprise and inquiry to the visitor through two semiporch that lock in space allowing the ground floor to be free and has no pillars.
