Just a short stroll along the beach and you’ll find Kingscliff’s hidden gem and locally loved café Shiny Brew. Owners Karen and Leighton moved to Kingscliff from Brisbane with their children, seeking a lifestyle change and somewhere they could open their dream café. Inspired by their new ‘shiny life’, that also saw Karen leave her long-term corporate career, Shiny Brew walks the talk when it comes to being sustainable, reducing plastic and recycling wherever possible and supporting BioPak for sustainable take-away packaging. They’re also part of Circular Cafes, whose aim is to divert 726 tonnes of food waste every year away from local landfill.
How does your menu feature local products? We use as many local suppliers as possible, from food and beverages to baked goods, preserves and even locally made ceramics. We support more than 20 local businesses and are continually asking what else we can use that is produced here. What’s the most popular dish? The Bacon & Egg Roll is our most favoured order – we use fresh produce from our local suppliers and also make our own Onion Relish and Smokey Chilli Sauce.
Where do you like to eat out? There are so many places where we love to eat, it’s more a question of where don’t we! Naming just a few is hard but No 35 Kitchen & Bar, Mahsuri Thai and Tweed River Seafood are ones that come to mind!
Favourite place for a sip? Kingscliff has Brew & Bake Co and Caba has Kartel but honestly, all the cafés are amazing. From The Pot & Pint to the Burrow, or Fins to Paper Daisy, you’ll find great cocktails using local gins. For beer, it’s Earth Beer Company – even for a non-beer drinker like myself, they have options like Mulled Wine in winter.
What do you love most about being in The Tweed? Just one word. Community… everyone who lives here knows what I’m talking about and anyone who’s new will figure it out soon (if they haven’t already!).
