POTAGER - A KITCHEN GARDEN

Peter Burr

Tucked away in the hills of Carool, just a 20-minute drive from Tweed Heads, the delightful Potager is a multi-award-winning hatted restaurant set within a charming country cottage on a four-hectare farm. Partners in both business and life, Peter Burr and Gareth Leslie created Potager to feel like you’re eating in a friend’s house, with homely dishes whipped up using homegrown and locally sourced organic produce, fish and grass-fed meat (since passing, Gareth’s legacy lives on through talented Chef Mikey Lee). The restaurant is only open Friday to Sunday, so you can settle in for dinner or savour a long lunch experience.

How does the menu feature locally grown or sourced ingredients?

We love to showcase local producers on each menu, like the incredible mushrooms from Urliup Farm Co to Fair Game Wild Venison. Chef Mikey and the team deliver dishes and flavours from around the world with our eclectic menu, picking ingredients each day from the Potager gardens. What’s the most popular dish? Our signature dish is the Sudado de Pescado – our fish stew – which has been on every menu since we opened, but I’d have to say the most popular dish is our Australian Bay Lobster. People love the fact that it’s sustainably farmed in nearby Chinderah, now grown in seawater directly piped to Chinderah from the ocean and Chef Mikey’s cooking of this delicate seafood is sublime. Where do you like to eat out? I love supporting my friends Phillip and Gregory at Tweed River House. The ambience is pretty special. If you haven’t been there, you should! Favourite place for a sip? That’s a hard one, as I often don’t leave “the hill”. But when I get a chance I love good coffee and brekky with Michele and the team at Farm & Co. They’re currently planning a new direction for the café and I can’t wait to see what they come up with. What do you love most about being in The Tweed? The wonderful sense of community and the connections I’ve made since we bought the property back in 2006. And who wouldn’t love living here, waking up to this natural beauty every day!

TWEED RIVER HOUSE

Phillip Hepburn & Gregory Lording We moved here 6 years ago after visiting a friend whose family lived in Murwillumbah and immediately fell in love with the area. We noticed the “Greenhills Lodge”, built in 1907 on the banks of the Tweed River, and when it came up for sale, we knew it had to be renovated and returned as the Grande Dame of the River. Gregory grew up in Asia in the 70s and wanted to create a plantation meets colonial look, reminiscent of the Raffles era. Guests can dine on the river terrace, with views out to majestic Wollumbin, or inside under elegant pressedtin ceilings and palm fans, while experiencing award-winning cuisine and a gentler pace and time.

How does the menu feature locally grown or sourced ingredients?

We celebrate the best of The Tweed’s growers, farmers, fishermen and providores. Every plate is an experience showcasing different preparations of a star ingredient, infusing it with touches of native Australian flora and The Tweed’s outstanding produce. What’s the most popular dish? The Grilled Scallops without a doubt. Hard to beat their tender sweetness, gently seared in salumi nduja butter and topped with lemon and parsley crumb for that crunch, and Joseph’s secret ink aioli tops it off! Where do you like to eat out? We love eating out for breakfast and our go to is Black Drop in Pottsville. Imaginative and tasty delights backed up with a smiley crew who love what they do.

Favourite place for a sip? Hard to beat Bastion Lane Espresso in Uki, where Gary roasts and blends his own coffee. As good as it gets!

What do you love most about being in The Tweed? Everyone has a story on what brought them here, and the common denominator is a love and connectedness to the region’s abundant bounty. Makes for a great work/life balance to be surrounded by such natural beauty and great community spirit.
