Abundance in Free-flow
FED FROM THE FRESHWATER RANGES OF AN ANCIENT CALDERA RIM, AND FLOWING THROUGH PASTORAL LOW-LANDS TO JOIN THE ROUS AND OXLEY TRIBUTARIES, THE TWEED RIVER MEETS ITS SALTWATER MOUTH NEAR TWEED HEADS.
The Tweed River is a mighty life force that connects ocean and hinterland, with the inland villages of Tumbulgum and Murwillumbah set upon its wide, winding banks.
For centuries, the river has been a generous food source, from mud crabs to myriad fish, while all around the volcanic soil is a fertile base for sugar cane, tropical fruits and year-round vegetables.
This bountiful setting is a gorgeous backdrop for some inviting food and drink experiences from river-view coffee, new restaurant openings and pub meals to craft brewhouses and gin and rum distilling. There are hip coffee shops, gallery cafes, heritage pubs and hearty meals all on offer, so don’t delay – get your tastebuds riverside!

CUBBY BAKEHOUSE
Ursula & Ben Watts & Dan Cresswell
Cubby Bakehouse is known for its delicious house-made pastries, Marvell Street coffee and all-day brunch. From gooey cookies to bacon & egg banh mi rolls, Cubby is a go-to for locals and a must-try for visitors. Locals Ben and Ursula Watts are the visionaries behind Cubby and you’ll no doubt meet Akubra-wearing maestro Dan Cresswell behind the coffee machine as he slings you a morning brew!
How does Cubby feature locally grown or sourced ingredients? We work with a range of local producers so we can get our hands on the best quality, seasonal produce. From Byron Bay Mozzarella, to organic edible flowers from Bloom for our cakes, fruit and veg from Mate and Matt’s farm stall and fresh roses from Murwillumbah – the ethos extends from our kitchen to pastry cabinet and beyond. What’s your most popular sweet treat? You can’t go past our iconic Twice-Baked Almond Croissants! Our delicious frangipane filling is just insane, and so addictive! Our Red Velvet birthday cakes are also a family fave – sweetens the fact that we’re another year older! Where do you like to eat out? We love Zanzibar in Kingscliff, can’t go past their burgers – or get the Mez plate! Further south, Okky GF Fish & Chips in Pottsville are epic – try their bento boxes with the karaage fish! Favourite place for a sip? Husk Distillery for something posh and lush – their Ink Gin is still a fave cocktail go-to! Or take a bottle of their gin or cane rum to go, make some DIY cocktails and roll out the picnic rug at Kingscliff Creek! What do you love most about being in The Tweed? It’s the relaxed vibe, and the slower pace. You get the best of both worlds – the stunning hinterland and the stretches of beaches and surf, side by side, it’s just bloody magic!
