ice Admiral Floyd hails from Lewisburg, W.Va., and was commissioned through the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill NROTC program in May 1980. He was designated a naval flight officer in August 1981 and completed training in the F-14A at Fighter Squadron (VF) 101 in May 1982. Floyd served in several F-14 Tomcat squadrons including tours with the Jolly Rogers of VF-84, the Grim Reapers of VF-101 as an instructor, and the Red Rippers of VF-11. He participated in Operation Desert Storm while serving as a department head with the Starfighters of VF-33. He served as the executive officer and subsequently the commanding officer of the VF-32 Swordsmen from November 1994 to September 1997.Subsequent sea tours include a tour as the executive officer of USS Constellation and deputy commander of Carrier Air Wing 7 where he participated in Operation Enduring Freedom. He commanded Carrier Air Wing 7 from February 2003 to July 2004. Ashore Floyd served on the staff of the Naval Space Command in Dahlgren, Va. as aide to the commander and subsequently as flag lieutenant, commander Carrier Group 8. He also attended the Naval War College graduating with a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies and served as the chief staff officer on the Fighter Wing, U.S. Atlantic Fleet staff. He completed a tour on the staff of the United States military representative to the NATO Military Committee in Brussels, Belgium, served as the deputy operations officer on the staff of Joint Task Force Southwest Asia in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and served as chief of staff to commander, Naval Air Forces. He has served flag tours as director, Aviation and Aircraft Carrier Plans and Requirements (OPNAV N880) and deputy director, Air Warfare Division (OPNAV N88B) prior to assuming command of Strike Force Training Pacific in February 2009. He returned to the OPNAV staff in June 2010 as director, Air Warfare Division (OPNAV N88) followed by Warfare Integration (OPNAV N9I), and Deputy Assistant Chief of Naval Operations for warfare systems (N9B). In June 2013, he assumed command of U.S. THIRD Fleet headquartered in San Diego. His awards include the Navy Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medals, Air Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal and various campaign, unit, and service medals.

Commander, Carrier Strike Group One Rear Admiral David F. Steindl

A

native of Stillwater, Okla., Rear Adm. Steindl graduated with distinction from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1984 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics. He holds a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College where he graduated with highest distinction. Steindl’s assignments at sea include damage control assistant and main propulsion assistant in USS Crommelin (FFG 37), propulsion plant examiner for the Pacific Fleet Propulsion Examining Board, engineer officer in USS Cowpens (CG 63); executive officer in USS Ross (DDG 71); commanding officer in USS John Paul Jones (DDG 53); and, commander, Destroyer Squadron Seven. During his commander command tour, John Paul Jones was awarded the 2001 Spokane Trophy and the 2001/2002 USS Arizona Memorial Trophy. He served as sea combat commander during Ronald Reagan Strike Group’s maiden deployment to the Arabian Gulf. He has completed one Mediterranean and six Western Pacific/Arabian Gulf deployments, including Tomahawk Land Attack Missile strikes in support of Operations Southern Watch, Allied Force/Noble Anvil, and Enduring Freedom. Steindl served as flag aide to the commander in chief U.S. Pacific Fleet; special actions division chief in the Operations Directorate of the Joint Staff; executive assistant to the assistant secretary of the Navy (Installations and Environment); assistant captain detailer and, later, director of the Surface Officer Distribution Division (PERS 41). His first flag assignment was as commander, Naval Service Training Command, where he was responsible for Recruit Training Command, Officer Training Command Newport, all Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) units, and the NJROTC program. Steindl assumed command of Carrier Strike Group One, Feb. 21, 2013. Steindl’s personal awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit (4), Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal (4), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (4), and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (3).

Prospective Commander, Carrier Strike Group One Rear Admiral Christopher W. Grady

R

ear Adm. Grady is a native of Newport, R.I. He is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame, and was commissioned as an ensign through the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps program. Grady’s initial sea tour was aboard USS Moosbrugger (DD 980) where he served as combat information center officer and antisubmarine warfare officer. As a department head, he served as weapons control officer and combat systems officer aboard USS Princeton (CG 59). He was commanding officer of Mine Countermeasure Rotational Crew Echo aboard USS Chief (MCM 14), and deployed to the Arabian Gulf in command of USS Ardent (MCM 12). Grady then commanded USS Cole (DDG 67) deploying as part of NATO’s Standing Naval Forces Mediterranean. He then commanded Destroyer Squadron 22 deploying to the Arabian Gulf as sea combat commander for the Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. Ashore, Grady first served on the staff of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and then as naval aide to the Chief of Naval Operations. He also served on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations as assistant branch head, Europe and Eurasia Politico-Military Affairs Branch (OPNAV N524). He then served as executive assistant to the Navy’s Chief of Legislative Affairs. Next, he served as the deputy executive secretary of the National Security Council in the White House. His last assignment was executive assistant to the Chief of Naval Operations. In October 2011, he reported to Commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet as deputy chief of staff for Operations, Training and Readiness. Grady is a distinguished graduate of Georgetown University where he earned a Master of Arts degree in National Security Studies while concurrently participating as a Fellow in Foreign Service at the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service. He is also a distinguished graduate of the National War College earning a Master of Science degree in National Security Affairs. His personal awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit with one gold star, the Meritorious Service Medal with three gold stars, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps commendation Medal with three gold stars and the Combat “V”, and the Joint Service Achievement Medal. Grady is a joint specialty officer.
