nderstanding and appreciating culture and heritage was the focus for Carl Vinson and Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 17 Sailors as they celebrated African-American history month Feb. 25. The American Heritage Observance Committee (AHOC) hosted a cake-cutting ceremony to kick off the day’s celebration that included a special dinner served by Vinson’s Supply Department food service division and a talent show from AHOC members depicting the journey and role of African-Americans during the Civil War of 1861-1865. “We have to show our respect to those who came before us,” said executive chairman of AHOC, Chief Legalman (SW/AW) Tracey Mitchell. “Understanding the contributions [African-Americans] made so long ago and how it impacted our cultural history allows us to understand how to relate to each other.” The program embodied history through Civil War memoirs, a rendition of the Emancipation Proclamation and interpretive dances representing the journey of AfricanAmericans as they joined the Confederate Army fighting for their freedom and fighting for equality within the armed service. More than 186,000 African-Americans served in the Union Army and Navy during the Civil War, and served on almost all of the Unions nearly 700 ships.
