introduction From the Roman Empire, through Celtic Writing and Charlemagne, lettering styles continued to develop. With the technology advancement, mechanical ways of producing text were formed. But still, they were inspired, as a wide variety of machines are, by human features. Soon it became clear that being able to master handwriting would provide benefits: in the far 1700, elegant handwriting was a sign of social status. The institution of penmanship toke place and methods of teaching handwriting developed further, together with an increased literacy within the whole population. From a simple standpoint, the ability of writing is a way of expression. The written word can often make the difference in the process of self-determination, either that involves a single individual or a broader group of people. Handwriting today is considered a bit of a lost art; a symbol of a now-bygone, analog age; a cruder form of writing, mostly pointless; or a distinctly human form of communication, that also happens to be an expression of identity. And in the in the rise of a hybrid digital writing, perhaps there is some useful alchemy left in the way language, the body, and our sense of identity are so intimately intertwined. Handwriting has been subject of scientific studies. So appears that it is beneficial for the brain which will stimulate the formation of deep thoughts, will improve creativity, learning, and retention. From my own experience, I remember loving to handwrite and taking notes, using any material available, anywhere, to show what was in my mind, part of myself. As everybody else, I do use my laptop daily. And I like it too. But there is a special mechanism that’s activated when I handwrite. Maybe it’s a feeling of interchange, a dual relationship with the pen. As I write, it responds with a permanent mark on the paper. So I have to think, I have to cross over my mistakes, but I can always go back to them and learn, reconsider, rethink, rewrite. It is not so much about having a beautiful handwriting as it is finding that direct line with your soul. No digital modification: only raw, spontaneous and beautiful in everybody‘s extraordinary diversity. Have you ever seen hand-drawn ink on a page, magnified? It is jagged and rough, full of an impossible number of imperfections. Zoom in far enough and even the most sophisticated digital algorithms would find it difficult to track the cartography of just one letter. There are simply too many undulations, too many indecipherable points to make sense of it. And perhaps this is what appeals with digital ink, too, as symbol, as metaphor: that in that discomfiting glide of a nib atop glass, there is still the human yearning to say, “I know who I am—here, let me show you.”

defining the problem p roj ect ¬ M FA THESIS // Handwriting is rapidly disappearing, being taught only in kindergarten and first grade. After that, the emphasis quickly shifts to proficiency on the keyboard. But new evidence suggests that the links between handwriting and broader educational development run deep. And without our brain we cannot function, it controls everything we do. Children not only learn to read more quickly when they first learn to write by hand, but they also remain better able to generate ideas and retain information. Handwriting skills boost creative thinking and help generate the flow of ideas, as well as motor skills, brain capability, and writing task—like putting ideas into language that is organized.
+ D ECR YPTED OBJECTIVE : Create accessible handwriting activities to have fun with handwriting, facilitating families in supporting their children in the practice of handwriting. Facilitate the best practice of the hybrid handwriting style, mix of cursive, and printing, with kits and worksheets, and Online material. Create tools, such as informational website, app, and book, for overcoming dysgraphia, the inability to write coherently, which causes frustration and distress in children.

handwriting makes you a better thinker Developing handwriting skills is a tool to empower creative thinking and generate more flow of ideas. Relative to typing, writing by hand sees increased activity in the Broca’s area and inferior parietal lobule (areas involved in language comprehension.) Writing stimulates the reticular activating system (RAS). This system acts as a filter for everything your brain processes and gives priority to important data. When triggered, the RAS signals the cerebral cortex to pay attention to what’s being written and absorb the details. Furthermore, repetitive processes, such as handwriting, strengthen connections between neurons in the brain, making it easier for impulses to travel along pathways. The stronger the pathway, the easier it is to recall the learned skill. Lots of evidences show that handwriting stimulates the brain and offers benefits that typing doesn’t. The physical act of handwriting helps the flow of ideas for written composition in ways which keyboarding doesn’t. Today handwriting has been greatly sacrificed, to the point that in some schools is not even required anymore as part of the program after first grade. There is an area of interest, rarely mentioned, about writing conditions and disorders. In fact, many children suffer from dysgraphia (the inability to write coherently), which leads to frustration and distress. (And anxiety for parents and teachers who watch the child struggle). Ultimately, it is my belief that the future is in the convergence of handwriting and technology,
in its development as a resource for future
education, and as helpful tool for those that struggle with handwriting.

survey report It appears from survey/quantitative research that handwriting is still used daily by a wide part of population. It is also clearly visible that people are interested in being more creative and they do highly recognize the value of creativity in improving things. There’s a tendency in believing that handwriting will be confined in the old-fashioned category. But it is also that is also something that people would like to keep due to its human-related feelings. In conclusion, it’s general believing that digitalization is the future. Hopefully this will include handwriting in its evoluted form.

design brief _ What am I making? _ Who is it for? _ What is the purpose? _ How does it work? _ Why is it important?
I AM BUILDING... (What it is) A writing analysis app and supportive of writing dysfunction (educational | tracking) FOR... (Who it’s for) Educators and parents of children who have dysgraphia, the inability of writing coherently, or writing disorder. Children are also an important part of the target audience. IN ORDER TO... (Value provided) Help their condition, reason of frustration and distress, Users will be guided through a series of activities that will make them produce a clearer handwriting, meaning a broader flow of thoughts, better spelling, neater calligraphy, easier to read. Seeing their progress will generate a sense of self-accomplishment which will leave them with a better quality of their life and more confidence in their handwriting.

BY... (How it does it) Providing information in the moment and over time, to show tips to support children with writing dysfunction. For instance gameification could be a good feature because one of the purposes of the app is also to make these handwriting activities fun, in order to gain more interests and attention in the children that usually find boring or too much similar to a medical treatment the repetitive practice of what will lead them to improvement. The app will include a user profile, with the ability of sharing into a community. Each Users will be able to access ‘the wall of progress’ which is an area dedicated to the history of activities, where progresses will be highlighted, together with reminders and motivations. AT A TIME WHEN (Tech/trend that makes this service possible) A constantly updated encyclopedia of suggestions, tips
and tricks
to make handwriting less difficult and painful, will be a solid part of the app. Furthermore, the possibility to scan your handwritten pieces, through the camera of the device (phone or pad), then your handwriting will be analyzed and emergent incorrect patterns highlighted and the suggestion to correct the specific tendency will appear as a pop-up. There’ll be the possibility to contact a professional therapists, for additional extra help, but this is not a main feature. The app wants to differ from medical treatment, focusing on making the handwriting fun, with activities that can be done at home or during recreational time, and be shared by family or educators. Touch screen will function without the use of a stylus. It is important for a better and easier handwriting to exercise hand muscles in different ways, and that will happen for example, by tracing words and letters with fingers. However, it might be required to posses a real pen or pencil to do activities that will later be scanned and brought on screen.

S C R IP T : Hi, my name is Viola and thanks so much for talking to me today about your handwriting, abilities and skills. I am working on a design project about the correlation between handwriting and brain development, focusing on handwriting disorders, such as dysgraphia (inability of writing coherently and mess handwriting). I’m also focusing in different ways in which people can overcome this uncomfortable condition and how they can improve their performance, and their life quality. First I would like to get a sense of what are your discomforts when you handwrite something, and then talk about how you would like to improve it and what tools could best help you. — How do you plan your studies? Do you like to handwrite and take notes? What tools (pen, keyboard) do you use to write down your notes? What do you like about the keyboard? What about it motivates you in taking more notes? What do you not like about handwriting notes? What is frustrating? What is unnecessary? What would be your ideal way of writing your spontaneous thoughts? How is handwriting uncomfortable for you? Is the word spelling? Is the pen you have to use? Does it hurt your hand’s muscles? What would you like to do with it? Would you want to share it with anyone?A friend for example? Have you searched for help already somewhere else? What was it about? Did it help you? Do you have any additional thoughts on handwriting, motivations for more practice or improving skills and performance? — Thanks so much for your time and have a great day!

color studies To find the right inspirations for a project devoted to families and children, it was important to search through the history of colors, their usage, and the studies that have been made upon them. A particular focus was centered on the artists like Matisse, Kandinsky, and Mondrian, that during their experience with colors decided to asses the importance of primary colors and also to re-evaluate the so-called “infantile art” which led to the artistic current named “Primitivism”. Painters and artists, of the XX Century and during the Avant-garde of the 1900, like Paul Gauguin, Henri Rousseau, and even Jackson Pollock — together with the precedent group of artists defined as Fauves, of which were part, Henri Matisse, Maurice de Vlaminc, and André Derain — were able to identify a salient trait, predominant in the creativity typical of young age, and it is the ability of expression more freely than in adults, which have already fallen into the catalysis of their world ruled by convention and stigma. Indeed, from theirs studies emerged the time that we know, in art, as Expressionism: a great, and incommensurable asset for all the following currents, schools of thought, as well as modern and contemporary art.

illustrations & handwriting The use of handwriting, in a project about handwriting felt necessary, and vital, to better portray the relevance of the topic. Furthermore, a collection of hand-drawn illustrations was added to emphasize the point above and also to display a representation of a big various family that goes along the way, struggles or not, with the audience that approaches the project. The project is meant for families with children and educators that relate to children on a daily basis. In this regard, it was important to show this “friendly family as a group of individuals with similarities but also differences, in the same way that humans are.

typographic standards The main use of typography, in this project, is only supportive of the handwritten parts and it is meant to enhance the feeling that the handwriting naturally conveys. The choice of a typeface like T-Star Mono is particularly customized because, even though the typeface is very geometric, it also has some roundness, which creates a good connection with the fluency of the letters written by hand.
ABOUT THE FONT Mika Mischler started working on the T-Star Mono Round font in 2001 to create a running text font. In 2002, he adapted the font to a single-spaced font for the index of dgv’s bestseller Los Logos and called it T-Star Mono Round. The corners were rounded to give it more character in big sizes but legible in small for the index. The basic form of the T-Star Mono Round is simple, open and it features several extra characters including those for the web, clients and credits and works especially well in small font sizes.

final deliverables Evidence point to handwriting being more beneficial than typing. Peraphs it’s time to turn off the computer and go back to the basics: pen and paper. Or at least try to find a better balance in the combination of both.
O B JECTIVE: According to the strategies established in order to pursue this project a series of deliverables were planned. And they include: A campaign, that together with handouts and give aways, helps to raise awareness on the importance of keeping handwriting alive; A series of handwriting activities, in the form of a game, to facilitate families that can’t afford to enroll their children in private schools with divergent creative programs; A system, inclusive of online support and a writing kit, to facilitate the best practice of D’Nealian handwriting alphabet; a hybrid style that provides an easier transition between cursive and manuscript; A series of informational material, inclusive of a book, website, with the access to an online blog, and an app to provide support and tips for families and educators that are struggling with children affected by dysgraphia.

Thanks to my teachers and mentors, who led me on this adventurous journey. You were often the source of my inspiration and a great example to follow. Thanks to who gently was able to take care of my heart and my soul, because there’s no good or bad design if the artist is broken. Thanks to who appeared along the way on this path, and silently opened up to me, giving trust and believing that vulnerability is first a strength than a weakness. Thanks to who’s no longer here, but wanted to see this moment. Your spirits are also part of these pages, otherwise meaningless.
With all my respect, admiration and love.
