Soul Script Welcome to the Winter Issue of The Violet Ray - Natural Health and Conscious Living Magazine that will be in circulation for November, December and January. This issue features articles on personal growth, belief systems, new healing modalities, and spirituality. Our regular columnists continue to share guidance from the questions that you submitted in What’s Above, Where Is The Joy and Ask Dr. Evers . We have a wonderful line up of columists in this issue. With Winter approaching we have a couple of articles on taking care of your skin by Dr. Anne Marie Evers shown on page 25 and Carla Green shown on page 26. We also have some extraordinary articles on various healing modalities and energy work including the new modality by Pete Swales called “The Body Whisperer” shown on page 6 and “Treating the Root Cause of Pain” which deals with the Yuen Method of healing by Stephanie Monsen. Of course we cannot forget about one of our feature articles by Susan Cossi and King Authur Pendragon the Arch Druid from Stonehenge. Susan Cossi was in England in August and interviewed King Authur Pendragon, archeologist David Bachelor and the well mannered staff at the English Heritage. The result is the “Winter Solstice at Stonehenge” article shown on page 16. Our online Calendar of Events and online advertisers are growing with each issue. Personally, I have had an interesting and unpredictable past three months. From all the astrological influences we encountered on August 23 to the day’s adding up to October 10. It seemed as if it was challenging to keep to one’s schedule as a number of diversions crept in including moments of depleted energy, unexpected vists to the emergency department at the hospital and my new welcome four legged diversion” Shylo”. I adopted “Shylo” from a “No Kill” animal shelter on September 29th. She is a Catahoula Cross puppy and is 11 weeks old . She has brought much joy to my life in the short time I have had her. She reminds me of my last dog “BJ”who was a Border Collie cross that I had for almost 17 years. Perhaps “BJ” has reincarnated into the body of “Shylo” and she was just waiting on the other side for the moment that my heart was ready
to take another little four legged into my home. I write this as she lies by me feet so peacefully and realize that I am so grateful for this new little addition. ON GRATITUDE: We are grateful to be able to serve our readers by providing a forum that cultivates and nurtures positive growth in mind, body and spirit. We are extending an invitation to the readers to join us in our Sharing Circle which had a fantastic turnout for the past two months. Our Sharing Circle is held the last Monday of each month (excluding December) in Red Deer. W hat’s Above With Clairvoyant Kim Dear Kim, I hope that you can shed some light on this question - ever since I can remember, just as I am falling asleep, I see many faces, one blends into another and they keep changing like on a television show. It was never scary. About two years ago, they stopped. Can I get these souls to return, to be honest, I really kind of miss them? ~ Cathy O., Medicine Hat, Alberta ~ Hi Cathy...Love your question. Souls walk with us all the time. They are not in some far off land. Souls have the ability to come in real close, lower their vibration so that we can see them with our physical eyes. Souls often come in close when we are sleeping or resting; it is easier for them to make the connection with us because our own minds are quiet. These visits are most often loved ones, parents, grandparent’s letting us know that they are close and love us and still part of our lives. Our loved ones are not the only souls that visit us though; random souls may visit as well. Your visitors probably, for whatever reason, did not realize that they were coming in so close. The reason you were seeing so many, is that there are many, many spirits walking with us all the time, we just are not aware. Put out a prayer or thought to the universe that you wish your visitors to return. I am sure that they are still there, they have just pulled back.

Never worry about anyone on the other side, they are in a wonderful place, there is no illness, you don't grow old, old people are young again, you do not work...it is simply bliss. Can you please tell me what you believe happens in the afterlife to souls of people who have committed an act of suicide? Are they trapped by their actions? Do they reincarnate immediately? We ALL come into this physical world voluntarily and we ALL leave voluntarily....no one goes before their time. It is always our choice. He will pull close when you are having a hard day or a difficult time, just so you know that you not alone, Dad is there to give you strength and support. When life is rolling along, going well, he may step back and let you go on with your life, just as if he were still with you in the physical world. Do you have an inner battle about your weight and health, or when you eat foods you feel you shouldn’t have eaten? Do you finish everything on your plate even though you knew you were full five bites ago? You may have tried a new exercise or diet program, but with what results? You may have even lost weight, but only to gain it back. Why does that happen? Because we have limiting beliefs about our weight and about ourselves! New programs on diet and exercise will fail if you do not work with your inner self first and find out what is blocking you from releasing that weight or why you are having a struggle with your weight. In Release the Weight Program, we spend the afternoon on belief systems and I get participants to interview each other based on some specific questions so that we can find any limiting beliefs one may have around weight and body image. I have had clients and participants come up with the following beliefs: ~ I can’t lose weight because I am too old. ~ Losing weight is a struggle because life is stressful. ~ I self sabotage my weight/image because it is too difficult to see the positive. ~ I don’t want to eat unhealthy foods because I will get fat. ~ It is hard to give up unhealthy eating habits because they are such a comfort to me. What’s All this Whoooo Haaaa about Breath? By Marlayne Robinson I have become aware of the effects of breath and the body’s ability to relax. I believe in healing both the mind and body. The way we breathe is a clear indicator of what may be going in the mind, subsequently manifesting in body. When calming energy is moved through the body it translates itself subliminally to the mind, circling back into the body. There are two ways that people exhale that I will address. The first one is a breath in, with a controlled breath out. My experience is that when I ask an individual to take a deep slow breath in and exhale slowly, most will breathe in, hold their breath, slightly purse their lips and exhale. This is the Whoooo Breath. When we purse our lips, we control our facial, neck, chest, abdominal and even the muscles in our arms. When we exhale with pursed lips, we control the out-breath, leaving these muscles somewhat tightened, making it difficult to remove all the air out of our lungs and feel totally relaxed. This relaxes one somewhat but there is a deeper state possible! The second breath is the Haaaa Breath. With this breath we inhale deeply and slowly and imagine that we are saying Haaaa as we exhale. This causes the lower jaw to drop slightly, the neck, chest, abdominal and arm muscles to expand. As the chest wall expands, we can exhale more air from our lungs, shoulders drop, the face relaxes and a sense of ease fills our bodies as our entire core opens. The energy moves with greater freedom and more oxygen can enter our lungs, which in turn aids in bringing healing and relaxation to mind and body. The Gift in a Grain of Sand By Janet Desautels Our past provides the form from which we create: when we are able to see our past and its hardships with new eyes, we can receive its gifts and see that it does not confine us. Our past does not determine our ability to move forward and be joyful in life. It can be used as a tool to bring about the vast potential within each of us. Instead of complaining about and resenting our past, thus allowing it to define who we are and what is possible for us; we can consider the possibility that our past pain is like a grain of sand within an oyster. The uncomfortable friction between the sand (our early environment) and flesh (our being) produces passionate desire: perhaps for freedom, for self expression, for joy. This desire can lead to the choices and experiences perfect for the full expression of our uniqueness. It leads to our fullest potential. When we are born, we start our journey on Earth in an environment: our family and surroundings. Our family may be loving or emotionally distant, peaceful or violent, wealthy or poor. These situations are as unique as the individuals comprising them. Our family may be mired in negativity and fear, expecting the worst from life. Each one of these environments is perfect, however. Its appearance gives us each, as a young arrival, a set of materials to work with (beliefs, attitudes, education). These gifts provide the necessary shape, focus and direction required for the creation process. It does not matter what kind of environment it is. This is not meant to deny the pain we often experience, but to convey that it is only a starting point. Some have better-feathered situations than others. Contrary to popular opinion, this is not definitive or determinative of one`s adult life. We often think that because something happened to us in our past (perhaps our family was abusive, or we experienced other forms of hardship) we cannot have joy or fulfillment in life. To claim that our origins define us, however, denies the creative power we each have to design our own lives and experiences for ourselves. Imagine infinite dollars and resources to build your perfect house from scratch. Anything you want. Anywhere you want. This is difficult because the deeper you proceed into the project, the more difficult decisions become – when you can do anything, what do you choose? How do you choose? The ideas are formless. There is no basis to build upon, improve, tinker with, or create more or less. Creation asks for focus upon that which we want, and often the way we do that is to become clear upon that which we do not want. This is an integral part 12 | T H E V I O L E T R AY Winter 2010
of the process. You need to start with something to focus upon. The direction then becomes clear. And then build, tear down, or modify, and....create. An important part of the creation of the form known as You is the environment from which you spring into your journey here on Earth. It is perfect for bringing about the vast creative potential contained within you. It can be likened to the grain of sand within an oyster; the agitation inherent in the friction between the grain and the oyster`s soft flesh, due to the undulations of the ocean waves, creates the magical beauty of the pearl. The pearl can represent your fullest potential. Without the early environment specific to you, designed to bring about the possibility of the creation of your fullest potential, you would not have the form necessary to begin. There can be no pearl without the “annoying” grain of sand. So why complain about the grain of sand – the kind of family hardships you experienced and the pain derived from this early environment - that you were given at the beginning of your journey? You might say “I have this awkward grain of sand and it is such a burden, it makes me different, it pains me, I resent it and wish I was given a better one, or none at all.” The fact is it was given to you, whether or not you accept it. It gave you the sustenance to begin the journey. It gave you the material with which you create, the stuff from which you can evolve and express your fullest potential as a human being. As you carry it with you through your experiences, the ocean waves of life will rock you, push you, and turn you over and over. All the while you carry your grain of sand and it rubs within your being. The constant agitation produces passionate desire – perhaps for freedom, for the courage to express your truth in your own way – which leads to choices and experiences perfect for the expression of the unique being that is you. This continues until the day you see the gift in the grain that you carry. That day, your grain becomes a pearl. And that day, you are able to release it and move forward lightly and with joy. Ayurveda is Relationship By Andrea Olivera The well-known translation of Ayus + Veda is “Science of Life” or better yet, “Understanding of Life.” But what is the relevance to you and me? Ayurveda speaks of an understanding of Natural Law, especially as it affects the body and emotions. Natural Law, or dharma, belongs to every entity in the universe. It is the dharma of the sun to shine and of flowers to bloom. It is the dharma of massive objects to create attraction. This attraction known as gravity is invisible, but it is certain. There is likewise an invisible but certain connection between the natural laws of the world and the human body. This is what Ayurveda describes. This is relationship. This is the science of life. Ayurveda and the Face The face is a mirror of our inner world. A vaidya (Ayurvedic therapist) can read a patient’s history from her face. It reflects our thoughts, feelings, and physical imbalances. Facial lines can reveal the disposition, illness, and current as well as permanent conditions of the body and mind. Through understanding of these relationships, we can begin to create a cure. There is relationship between an emotion and its effect on the skin, between a personality trait and the permanent features of the face. Ayurvedic practitioners can recognize these effects. More importantly, they must be ready to treat their causes appropriately. This is where the art and science of relationships culminates. Why do we use cosmetic devices and products? To improve our relationships—with ourselves, with others, even with the divine. It is said that beauty is truth and truth is beauty. Before Keats, the Vedic canon spoke this just as eloquently: “Satyam sivam sundaram.” If beauty is all-attractive, even to the divine, then we must cultivate it both in and out. We must adorn our temples—that is, our bodies, homes, and shrines—with the best and most natural gifts that Nature has bequeathed to us. We must do this in a way that honors Her gifts and supports Her; by sustaining Her just as dutiful children attend to their mother.

Save your indulgence for your skin, where it is most needed. Feed your body good, clean, sattvic food. Beauty will be your reward. Because nothing tastes as good as good health feels! Ritual Ritual is the enacted enforcement of Natural Law for a specific purpose. Latent forces are harnessed and mobilized to produce a desired effect. When ritual loses this function, it becomes entertainment. Myth becomes cinema, sacred battle become sport, and self-care becomes vanity. Ritual intends to sanctify the act of beauty and rejuvenation. When you put sacred blends of oils and botanicals on your skin, with the intention to rejuvenate, it is as much your intention as the herbs themselves that produce the desired result. Without your sankalpa, or intention, there is no direction; without the natural potency of the Divine Mother’s herbs, there is no vehicle. Subject and object must come together. Patient and medicine must unite. This is relationship. Relationship is enacted by ritual. These are the rituals for rejuvenation. Intention Cause and Effect By Sacha Warder, RMT In our world today there seems to be a lot of focus on the negative issues at hand. Let's be serious, drama sells. But it doesn't mean that we have to get wrapped up in it ourselves. We can’t control the way the world responds to us but we can control how we respond to the world. Intention by one definition states, "Purpose: an anticipated outcome that is intended or that guides your planned actions." So there is intention behind every action and decision we make. We all need to be aware of what that intention is, what emotion we are putting behind it, and how it can affect others we interact with. If someone comes into work grumpy and is short and snappy with everyone, you can instantly notice a change in atmosphere. Everyone else can become more on edge and in some cases will become quite grumpy themselves. They can go home and unintentionally spread that energy as well. Now, let’s twist this unfortunate situation around and create something beautiful! Start with that same person, have them floating into the room like a butterfly, laughing and carrying on, what type of cycle do you think that would begin? Imagine an even bigger picture of all of us focusing our intention on love, acceptance, peace, and the greater good of all. All of our decisions and actions would be made with these intentions in mind. Picture the outcome of what we would spread and where our world could go. Someone once told me that Mother Teresa would not attend an anti-war rally because the context was still one of war. She would, however attend a peace rally because the focus and intention was of peace. I know the world will never be perfect because humans by nature are imperfect beings, but I still choose to focus my intentions on the hope for humanity and the world. My intentions are of love, peace and acceptance. What footprint will you choose to leave on the world?

Winter Solstice at StoneHenge By Susan Cossi in collaboration with King Arthur Pendragon
Stonehenge, a prehistoric Bronze Age monument of the late Neolithic period dating from 3700 to 1600 BC attracts over 887,000 visitors a year and is a true wonder of mysticism to the world. These gigantic stones, some individually weighing 25 tons form a circle, some say representing an astronomical clock or calendar and these immense stones are carefully aligned on a sight-line pointing to the winter solstice sunset. This temple stands majestically on England’s Salisbury plain and is considered a place of worship by many, in the past the marking of the winter solstice was an immensely important celebration because the surrounding villagers and farmers never knew how harsh the winter could be and if they would survive it. For nine months they would prepare for the famine months (January to April). The winter solstice was the last feast, a grand festival before deep winter began. Cattle were slaughtered and this was the only time of the year when fresh meat was available and consumed. The majority of the beer and wine was ready to drink. In the beginning of the preRomanized day the festival was celebrated on the eve of the solstice, often around the 24th December, considered to be the winter solstice upon the establishment of the Julian calendar. King Arthur Pendragon describes ceremony currently taking place at this sacred site: The Druids and Pagans gather at Stonehenge to mark four Solar Festivals called solstices and equinoxes which are the longest, shortest and the equal days of the year. The most important of these spiritual gatherings is the Dawn Ceremony

to mark the Winter Solstice, the return of the Sun, which represents the birth and rebirth of the life and the sun deities. Druids (priests and priestesses) and Pagans (from the word paganus meaning country dweller or villager) believe in seeking to work harmoniously with the natural world instead of destroying it, respecting and honouring the elements of nature. Centuries ago Druids were equals to nobles and even held the power to restrain armies from fighting, if they so chose. Druids and witches from many orders and covens as well as an assortment of various Pagans from far and wide will brave the weather and journey to the Temple from across the Country and throughout the British Isles to take part in the ceremony and enjoy the briefest of moments in the Stones, arriving the eve of the event to set up small camps and park on the adjacent drove to await their access. The English Heritage (the government’s official advisers of Historic Buildings and environment) conserves the site and presently only opens it briefly before dawn for the managed open access. David Bachelor, an archeologist who has been with the English Heritage for over 30 years explained that special preparations are made before each celebration. A gathering aptly called “The meeting of the round table” is held. Representatives of Druid orders, Pagans, witches and the English Heritage meet to discuss the upcoming activities; the primary purpose is to prepare the schedule and to discuss safety.
The Dolman Grove (pagan group) will travel up from Dorset. Rollo Maughfling the Stonehenge Arch Druid will travel up from South Wales to officiate. King Arthur Pendragon and Calliope, his Priestess reside close to the stones, as they are presently in situ “picketing” Stonehenge on behalf of The Loyal Arthurian War Band and The Council of British Druid Orders, due to the remains of a guardian that was removed and not yet been returned to the site. Many of Arthur’s Order (The War Band) travel from as far afield as Scotland, and as near as North Wiltshire to honour this thousands of years tradition. The “Dolman grove” will lead the gathering into the circle with their thundering drums; the sound of pipers will be heard conjuring the spirit element of air. Rollo will call for peace in the four quarters, Arthur will lead the Druids vow and the ceremony to mark the dawn of the returning sun after the longest night will begin. Small fires will be crackling and some celebrate in song. Love and harmony is felt all around; it is the time of celestial magic. This is a time when the gods and goddesses would meet and Hades would be permitted on Mount Olympus for the celebration. After the main ceremony different groups break off to do their own rites and special services. “The Genesis Order” from the South Coast and “The Loyal Arthurian War Band “perform ceremonies such as: Naming - the greeting of newly arrived souls who have travelled to earth Handfasting - a couples ritual of union a trial marriage, giving the couple the chance to see if they are compatible Initiation - novices that have secured their own connection to source and spirit and are ready to go forth to become a Druid In the case of “The War Band”, knightings are performed and the wheel of life will be reflected in the wheel of the year As many as a thousand will attend at winter, unlike Summer Solstice when twenty times that number may be expected. Access during the summer solstice is all night. However access for the Winter Solstice is only an hour or so, and with recorded temperatures as low as minus eighteen in centre circle, only the hardy Pagans make the effort, but for those that do it is certainly worth it. They may even get to view a “Snow bow” as they have on a past Winter Solstice. A snow bow is a great pillar of spectral colour; unlike the rainbow arc they are blocks of fantastic colour heading out of Stonehenge skywards to the Heavens…..

The birth is observed on December 25 which is the Roman winter solstice upon establishment of the Julian calendar. Christians participate in a lot of the folklore and traditions of local pagan festivals including: feasting, midnight mass, singing Christmas carols, good deeds and gift giving in the tradition of St. Nicholas, that is not admitting to being the actual gift giver.

Sweet Child of Mine A Crossover Ghost Story By Alf Hudgeon She is my sweet child, she is your sweet child. Like you and I, she is a sweet child from God, our inner and higher source of All That Is. She lived here on Mother Earth and she died here as well. I never knew this little soul personally; her life ended long before I was born. We all exist in human form energy; we are all connected in one way or another; we are all one. We are billions of intermingling human thoughts and feelings swirling around our beautiful planet every second of our lives. Hurt another person and hurt yourself. Love another and love yourself. Forgiveness sets us free. We are one. Despite what appears to be happening out there in our world, strive to send out loving thoughts every conscious moment you have. This little girl came into my awareness while I was watching one of those ghost hunting programs there seems to be so many of nowadays. The research team was investigating the Duran Sanitarium in the Cartago region of Costa Rica. A lot of people have died there over the decades. The sanitarium is a large complex built in 1915 and closed down in the 1960's. It is now a museum open to the public. Visitors over the years have reported many paranormal sightings here, and one that stands out the most is of our sweet child hanging around an old hospital building. The investigators set up special remote cameras and recording devices so they could view the old buildings in the middle of the night. Sifting through all the photographs the next day, several abnormalities were found. But the one that stands out the most is a grainy image of a little girl's figure sitting on the front steps of the derelict old hospital. Intuitively I examined the photo and instantly realize it is authentic! Sadly this little girl is stuck between this life and the afterlife, she is now a ghost in her own little world. All energy is connected. From my home here in Alberta I tune into this young child thousands of miles away. Entering my heart, embracing my light body, using pure intention and imagination, my awareness enters the spirit world of our little sweet child. Intuitively information comes to me. Her earthly body died of illness here in 1940. Her spirit, her ghost, or her life force energy (whichever term one prefers) got up and left her body. This sweet child she thinks she's still alive. She wanders around the abandoned hospital waiting for her parents to come and take her home, but doesn't realize no one will ever come for her again. Sweet child is an earthbound spirit, stuck in limbo between this world and the afterlife. Hundreds of visitors have walked past over the years and never noticed her.
She must feel totally abandoned and deserted. My heart goes out to this little soul. I now observe sweet child crouched on the steps of the old building. She is forlornly gazing out into the darkness of the night in the hopes someone will come for her. Instinctively I surround the area with God Light and dozens of beautiful angels encircle the scene. This catches sweet child's attention as she looks up and sees them all. A smile spreads across her little face, and after seventy long, lonely years her time of spirit rescue has arrived. Sweet child's parents and several passed on family members appear from a portal of light in the distance. Overjoyed, she stands and runs to them. What a joyous ethereal reunion I am privileged to be witness to, as they embrace and hug each other. The angels rejoice as sweet child and her family walk off into the Love Light....and just like that, she is gone. Sweet child no longer haunts the Duran Sanitarium. She has crossed over into the beautiful afterlife that awaits us all. I'd like to openly thank all the investigators and producers of the many paranormal research programs televised in recent years. Without them doing their work, I couldn't facilitate these far away crossovers. I may never know of all the earthbound spirits out there, especially those on the other side of our beautiful planet. And I may never have known about our sweet child in Costa Rica. Wherever I journey, wherever I'm guided, whenever I'm asked, I will be there for all the earthbound spirits, especially for the children. They are our past, our present and our future. It is so special seeing them cross into the Light. I get tingles just thinking about it. All of us were once children, and always will be children of the universe. Christ has said "Come to me as children..." Perhaps our little ones can teach us something. I will also be there for the angry spirits, the malevolent and "dark ones" that are out there. Their only power over us is in the fear we show them. They are just energy, and all energy can change form and return to the Light. Let me give you some examples from my coaching practice: a) A partner was sexually abused and unconsciously believes that sex is about one person’s control. b) A client was taught by example from her parents that the woman controlled her man with sex – she had no conscious awareness that this is not the way a healthy relationship works. c) The need to always be right. This shows how the controlling person is afraid of not being good enough but

d) One partner has a controlling partner who likes to control everything in their lives; often a result of fear of safety or a pattern observed as a child. The other thinks that withholding sex is the only way to fight back and has not learned to speak up for his or herself, resorting to passive control. e) A husband phones me and asks if I can help them - he wants more sex in the relationship. I teach them exercises to do frequently. They give me a follow up report that they are both excited about being more connected and how that enriches their sex life. Then he does not seem to find the time for the exercises or the depth of connection. His wife feels extremely ignored and unloved. After a length of time, she calls and gives me a list of what she has done to facilitate the exercises. As I listen, the attempts seem gentle and not controlling. She states that “she feels she has been jerked around on the emotional yo-yo and the only way to protect her heart is to deny him sex.” Without communication with him, I can only guess what pain made him become a passive controller. f ) Some men and women who experienced mental, emotional, physical or sexual abuse from an adult as children, unknowingly turn their anger into hating the gender of the abuser. They often use withholding of sex as an unconscious revenge. As you can see there is no one answer but in some way passive or active control can play a conscious or unconscious part, just as you stated. A person who is controlling is often wounded in some way and unfortunately it robs the relationship of warmth, expansion and depth. And bliss!

Hot Wax and Broken Glass – A Poignant Metaphor By Marlene Buffa Each morning I blow out the candle I lit the night before. A large glass globe sits inside of a metal stand and the candle, either a short or tall pillar, rests inside the base of the globe. 4:30 a.m. The dogs wake me up. I reach for my candle, carefully grabbing the metal base with both hands. This time, the tall pillar candle, heavy and lit, hits the side of the globe and topples the glass off the stand. Chards of glass and hot wax spray across the furniture, floor and bed. Now I am really awake! Luckily, the flame went out in the fall. I instruct the dogs to stay away and thankfully no glass penetrates any paws. I crawl across my bed to put on shoes, survey the damage, and clean up the mess. Shattered and spilled, the glass and candle provide a poignant metaphor for my spiritual understanding. Intensity of Purpose Prior to hard wired electricity, our ancestors used candlelight to illuminate the interior of the home. No matter how large the volume of wax, each candle emitted the same amount of light. The only way to increase the light was to multiply the number of candles or reflect the flame against another object. Some clever people placed sconces on the wall with a mirror or shiny metallic backing thereby increasing the lumen power of the flame. As equals created at birth, our Creator instilled within each of us, the basis of an internal flame. While some of us never ignite the fire within and choose to remain pure potential, others use their passion to spark the flame of life’s purpose and shine brightly for the world to see. Enhancing and increasing the brightness of being, some folks choose to surround themselves with people and circumstances which provide the opportunity for the highest and best use of their energy, thereby increasing the effectiveness and reach of their essence. Shattered Effects A harbinger of negativity, superstitions warned that a broken mirror brought seven years of bad luck. If the poor soul believed in the tale of unpredictable misfortune he not only faced cleaning up the shards of a mirror, but also years of punishment for one small, accidental act. In fact, if the scattered remnants of glass were any indication, the back luck would be just as far reaching and difficult to remedy. Each ensuing sce-
nario of broken vengeance could hold its own degree of breadth of impact and its own complications when attempting to clean up the situation. In life, we “own” or incorporate shortcomings suggested by history, ill-intentions of others or at worst, our own self-doubt. When we buy into these “truths” we begin to create a future which must live up to the folklore we defend as our fate. Not aware of the far reaches our limitations can spread, we attempt to pick up the pieces of our spirit which shattered at the moment we believed in something against our very nature and not in keeping with our highest self. Unless we carefully clean up life’s little messes, the widespread circle of negativity will remain hidden in the crevices of our fears and the corners of our consciousness, only to pierce our confidence when we unknowingly uncover them. Illusions Before Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla engaged in the disagreement of AC vs DC current for widespread electrical systems, nighttime illumination (other than the cosmos) was difficult. The world during the day varied vastly from an after dark experience. Undoubtedly the source of much folklore, rudimentary lighting by candle or gas lamps caused unrecognizable shadows. Dancing light cast by the slightest air movement most likely fostered tall tales of extra-worldly revelations and fear-based illusions. Before we awaken to our true selves, we too appear different during times of truth and times of illusion. When we deny our talents and powerful nature, we fabricate tales of the unknown and imagine external forces lurking around and within us which frighten us from fully engaging in the present moment. If everything “out there” is an illusion, the truth lies within each of us; our experiences and interactions with the world bring us information and knowledge about ourselves as well as shed light on the limitations we impose out of fear. The truth remains that the world outside of us is the distorted like pieced together broken glass. Wholeness exists within each of us should we choose to look deep within our glorious nature! While each of us entered into a human experience with a flame within to offer the world, some of us shine brighter not because of genetics, but due to choice. People focus on enhancing their gifts with enlightening people and circumstances which increases awareness and in turn, empowers others. By comprehending the far-reaching impact of negativity you slowly realize that to clean it up involves crawling around in the debris of that which you created in the first place. If you don’t address it, find it and sweep it up, it will resurface to impact you later on. The illusions of what you think you see about yourself and the world around you easily dissipate when you shine your own light of insight and understanding on your beliefs. When you realize the wax doesn’t make the flame brighter or duller, it merely provides a temporary constraint to contain the inner core (wick) that burns within you, you’ll realize the temporary human experience merely holds the bright burning spirit of who you are! Save your Skin, Starve a Wrinkle! By Carla Green Just as the word “glycosylation” will destroy your opponent in Scrabble, the process of glycosylation destroys your body’s youthfulness from the skin right down to the arteries! At skin level, the glycosylation of collagen causes your skin to become less elastic resulting in increased wrinkles and skin stiffness. But that is just the obvious surface damage. Other changes are occurring deep inside the body at a molecular level. Glycosylation happens when sugar molecules (glucose) circulating in the blood attach to protein molecules, reducing their effectiveness and contributing to inflammation. This entire process happens more quickly the older we get. Glucose itself is needed by the body as it gives our cells the energy required to function. Insulin is what moves the glucose out of our blood and into our cells where it can be used. When we develop insulin resistance (Type 2 diabetes or being overweight) the insulin can’t get all the glucose into our cells, so it circulates in our blood, and damages the proteins in our body. How does glucose cause damage? It attaches onto another molecule on the outside of the cell, and interferes with the function of that cell. Imagine that you have your hands full and someone gives you something that you really want and need…but you can’t accept this item because your hands are already full. With glycosylation the receptors on the outside of your cell are occupied with the glucose molecules therefore the cell itself cannot do its job properly. When glucose attaches to protein molecules, these modified proteins are called
Advanced Glycosylation End Products (AGE…an appropriate acronym don’t you think?). AGE’s are a key cause to cellular aging and dysfunction! Of course, the damage caused by glycosylation is much more than skin deep. It occurs in a variety of locations in the body (eyes, arteries, joints, etc). Increased blood sugar happens when we indulge in sweets (candy, pop, deserts), and simple carbohydrates (breads, pastas, white potatoes). Ideally we should eat only low glycemic index foods (http://www.glycemicindex.com). This holiday season give yourself the gift of a more youthful face, AND a healthier body! Before you reach for that sweet treat, think about whether the brief enjoyment of that item, is worth the development or deepening of a wrinkle, or the accelerated aging of your precious cells and organs. Founded on the principle of reciprocity – the balance between giving and receiving, Kimmapii Kids is a non-profit organization whose mandate is to “Help Educate the World.” Back in 2007 a group of shaman students and their mentor, Marv Harwood from Kimmapii Spirit Energies travelled to Peru to receive an experience with Peruvian shamanism and visit the sacred sites of the country. On the way home, the students were challenged with the question, “How can we give back?” The vote was unanimous – during the trip, the students had met with the local school children in the northern villages and decided that the best way to help these kids (most who live in very poor situations) was to offer them the opportunity for education. In Peru, the only requirement that these children need to attend the local schools is that they must have school supplies. Kimmapii Kids was born. In the first few months of its inception, the organizing members of Kimmapii Kids put together a project that provided 1212 children with this opportunity. The organization was built on a number of key principles. Through our contacts in Peru, we are able to bypass the bureaucracy that is often encountered with local governments and legislation. Our mandate is to ensure that all school supplies which are purchased through our fundraising go directly into the hands of the children. Our members travel to Peru in the spring of every year at their own expense. School supplies and the satchels that hold them are purchased in the country in an effort to assist with the local economy. We visit the schools personally where the children line up to receive this precious gift of opportunity and the Kimmapii Kids folks are met with smiles and hugs of gratitude, not just from the children, but the teachers and parents who also attend this very special annual event. Kimmapii Kids is structured to ensure that our administration costs are kept to a minimum, and through the generous donations and assistance of individuals and corporations, we have been able to put 98% of our raised money into the hands of these children in the form of the school supplies. In 2009 and 2010, Kimmapii Kids raised enough money to offer the gift of education to 1500 school children, many of whom have now been in school for three years in a row. Our future goal is to travel further around the world, to experience the practice of shamanism and to find ways to help the children in these countries with what we believe is an opportunity for choice.
