Dunbar Cave Project
Story & Photography by Tony Centonze GSA Troop Leader Dorothy Baynham, and members of Troop 2434 spent a recent Saturday morning working with volunteers, hundreds of feet inside Dunbar Cave. “Today, we are here building a cave floor to help preserve the natural cave floor,” Baynham said. “It’s actually like building a large deck, about 12’ by 120’. We’ve been working on the project for about three years, and we’re hoping to finish up this weekend.” Baynham says the project wouldn’t have been possible without the generous support of Rossview High School’s Joseph Cherry and his team, as well as folks from John Crabbe Construction. Also, Hopkinsville’s Kight Lumber provided lumber at wholesale prices, and Lowe’s provided equipment to help move materials. Major funding for the project came from Clarksville Rotary Club. “We donated $6,000 to the project,” Rotary Club President Kimberly Wiggins said. “We did it because the observation floor was eroding and exposing artifacts, causing Park Rangers to close the cave. And now, these Girl Scouts will get their Silver Badge, which is a big deal. I want to say thanks to John Crabbe Construction and all who helped with this important project.” “I’m just incredibly proud of all the girls in the troop,” Baynham said. “And so appreciative of all who worked on this from beginning to end. This was a major undertaking and I’m in awe of what we were able to accomplish.”
