CAR TUNES
Vancouver Island resident, Chevy Ray and The Fins is the rock and roll band with a strong history starting back, in 1985. The big moment for them came when they played at Expo `86, in Vancouver. Nowadays, the band is formed of 5 members and is well known for playing the legendary music of 50`s, not only on the island, but all over Canada. Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Sam Cooke are only a few of the artists of whose music, the band chose to represent along the years in their concerts. They started as a trio in May 1985 and almost right away they were commissioned for a show at Non Commission Officer Club in Nanaimo. The members have changed along the way, but the band became stronger and
www.viperformance.ca
stronger as the time pass by. The founder and the leader of the band, Deke represents the strong pillar of the group. When asked about his passion for music, he tells us that he began taking guitar lesson at the age of 10. Since then, he became a passionate of the classic rock and roll music. He tells us about how he chose the band name, about how the death of his brother came as a shock for him and in the same time how this event inspired him to use his brother’s name for the band name as an everlasting memorial. Along the way, Chevy Ray and The Fins supported lots of the fundraising campaigns through their music and excitement. They participated as well at numerous car shows that took place on the
Vancouver Island. In 1988, Tom Harris is offering to the band a van that they will use in their concert along Canada, Deke still remembers to this day the exhilaration with which they started their tours. Today, they are playing at different locations on Vancouver Island, you can hear them this fall as they started recently playing at Parksville Legion, in Parksville, as well as in Nanaimo, Lantzville and Coombs. YEAR 1978 MAKE American Motors MODEL Jeep DJ5F (right hand drive) ODOMETER 87,000 miles PURPOSE USPS (postal service wagon) ENGINE 232 cu in (3.8 L) AMC Straight-6 TRANSMISSION 727 TorqueFlite DIFFERENTIAL Dana 44 posi with 3.07 gears
Owner Gord MacKay of Nanaimo, purchased this DJ5 from a doctor in Nanoose
Bay. Gord grew up with Jeeps and AMC’s but always wanted a CJ. Although this looks alot like the CJ series, the DJs were built as a completely enclosed, rear-wheel drive vehicle, with sliding doors and a swinging rear door for use as a postal service vehicle. The DJ required upgrades to its’ stability since they were top-heavy with their enclosed cargo area, (especially at highway speeds) which was established by mounting the rear springs outside of the frame rails. Most models were also equipped with a limited slip differential and a heavy-duty steering gearbox since they were built as commercial vehicles. Gord found this lil’ beauty online and bought it for $450. He did a little fix up work on this all original Jeep that now runs perfect and is mechanically sound. This DJ will be used as a daily driver and fishin’ rig to get to the many little backwood lakes, with an aluminum boat in tow, for summer fun. It will eventually be painting in olive drab for that retro look. Look for it on Nanaimo’s streets this summer! by Mona-Lisa

DID YOU KNOW?
Debunking popular automotive myths Certain myths about automobiles have been around as long as there have been cars on the road. Many drivers adhere to driving and repair theories out of sheer force of habit, without ever knowing if these strategies are legitimate. Here are some common myths revealed and debunked.
I.C.B.C. CAR SHOP ACCREDITED COLLISON REPAIRS
* High-octane gas improves performance in all vehicles. Most cars will not get any added benefits from the use of high-octane fuel, which is designed for higher-performance engines that burn hotter than those of most vehicles. Drivers will only waste their money putting in more expensive gas. Always use the fuel recommended in the owner’s manual.
FACTORY TRAINED PAINT TECHNICIANS UNIBODY FRAME REPAIRS FREE ESTIMATES

* Longer cars are more stable. Many believe the longer the wheelbase the more stable the car will be. But wheelbase is only one of the factors that determine a vehicle’s stability and reaction time. * Side mirrors are properly adjusted when you can see the side of the car in them. Actually, the mirrors should be adjusted so you can’t see the sides of the car. The mirrors work in concert to allow a panoramic view around the car. This eliminates the need to turn your head to check blind spots, which takes your eyes off the road.
ESTABLISHED IN 1980
* Anti-lock braking system (ABS) was designed to shorten stopping distances. ABS was created to give drivers the ability to steer around obstacles while braking instead of spinning out of control.

Bart Some people drive with parrots, some with iguanas, dogs, cats and
various other species. I believe our pets are part of our families and deserve as much attention as our cars we put so much love into as well. I would love to see the pets you include in your adventure through life featured right here in ‘Driving Buddies’. Send in pics and a little bit about your pets to share with our readers. Bart & Kota come with us to explore our scenic back yard of lakes, rivers, mountains and forests as well as camping, which of course also involves dirt bikes! Bart is cross between a Lab, Hound & Wippet which he has incredible speed and stamina from! He’s 2 years old. Kota is a 9 month old Shepherd, Canaan & Rottweiler cross. He is no where near as fast as Bart, but is more protective of his family. Bart is often jealous of Kota who remains so calm and kind natured even while his brother is chewing on his ear. Bart has been along to the race track, but has serious wippet shakes during the morning engine revs and stays in the camper during this time, but happily checks out all the other racers in the evening. Kota has not been to the track yet, so this year will be his first...See You there!

She came from Kalonece Poodles (http://www.kalonece.com) in Langford, BC and just spent 3 months this past winter in Arizona & California! She has now matured into a sun bleached blonde.
DRIFTING
DQ’s Dirt on the Drift
With all the popularity of the import cars AND THE younger generation, drifting is becoming the autosports action to boast of! ~ By Disco Quinn Photography by Cole Chalmers
A
“ fresh season has begun, cracking an egg into a warm pan, moist pancakes, crisp bacon. Sizzling began early in the morning, as it should. Many new faces greeted us the morning of the Capital City Drift opener. February 25th was a day to mark on many youngsters calendars as their formal introduction to the drift scene here on Vancouver Island. It’s blatantly obvious; we’re growing. In the previous two years of my attendance our numbers began small, a strong core of individuals consistently at the track, rain or shine, money or not. In previous years the core crowd grew unnoticably slow. It is getting bigger though and this years opener was the biggest day we’ve had yet.
10 | VI Performance Magazine
Japan is an idol, as the origin of drifting, our motoring activity of choice. It’s big there, very big. An expression
www.viperformance.ca
Volume 1 | Issue 3 of youthful angst and individual style, these are the elements of a drift crowds spirit. Though their actual ages and daily lives may differ to their track appearances. The crowds of drivers in Japan are so vast that competitions have enough participants to justify different skill categories. To improve the driving expereience, drivers you. The other section of the track was rewarding to the experienced drivers as well. With the open flowing expert layout left to the experts to play, the action was hot. Fast entries, skilled lines, and big smoke were surrounding the main layout all day long. Everyone got to play at their own level without clash.
are divided by skill level. This year that concept is justified at Capital City Drift. Participation numbers were great enough to justify two skill groups and two seperate layouts. I myself was quarantined off to the learner section to aid in instruction of new and/or developing participants. Drivers could hop into my car, or I could hop into theirs, these vehicles being operated for a few laps followed by a strong review. Through out the day you could see improvements being driven right in front of
www.viperformance.ca
This is a big step, as it’s obvious proof the sport is growing. Secondarily another supporting characteristic of the growth was the variety of vehicles operated. Normally the roster of autos is limited to Japanese vehicles from the late 80’s, early 90’s. February’s event featured a more well rounded selection of vehicles, both domestic and foreign, even pickup trucks.
Some of the cars even dated back to the 1960’s! This variety is a heart beat, thumping strong. With this initial momentum Capital City Drift shall have a grand year. What excites me most is the potential for a great competition this season. A few more practices remain, some of the novice drivers should catch up quick, throwing a wrench into the works of the usual veteran roster. An aggressive season is brewing. We still seek more. More drivers are always welcome. Please visit us at www.CapitalDrift.ca for registration and scheduling information. Be ready for an entire day of getting sideways in the sun, burning tires with bro’s, and loving life once again.”

Morgan believes it’s because “North America is a TV culture and a lot of people identify with what they see on TV and we are also very fond of our cars so it would only seem natural
for people to be drawn to their favourite Hollywood cars. The ‘66 Batmobile is probably the most recognizable and loved car of them all.” Just in case you were wondering, Morgan has never dressed up like Batman and drove around town and probably never will. (The leotards would make his legs look too skinny) Morgan has had a lot of fun driving the Batmobile and talking to people about it. He tries explain the “Batmobile phenomena” while encouraging me to experience it first hand. Just imagine you are Morgan in this scenario: “I like to pull into a gas station and ask for “jet A fuel” I haven’t found a station that sells it yet. People always ask me if it’s my car and I usually reply “no, it’s Batman’s” This car gets a lot of attention, in the form of honks, waves, and screams. Wayne Roberts of Nanaimo, B.C. shares his dream machine for us to admire… Photography by Gord MacKay
I wouldn’t define this hot rod as a ‘rat rod’, but it does
have a few mix matched parts keeping it together. This purple piece of work comes equipped with a 350 Chevy
which he tested on the runway at Thunder in the Valley drag races in Port Alberni last year getting a time of 14.2! She now wears a Ford 9 inch rear end. Wayne found this Anglia in a garage in Cinnabar Valley about 15 years ago. The frame had already been built by the previous owner, but the rest was up to him to tackle. Like most people restoring a vehicle, he had some work done by others. Keith Thompson gave the Anglia its beautiful purple coat of color about 12 years ago, while M & M Mobile Upholstery tackled the interior a year later. Wayne uses this car as a daily driver when the weather is right, but you can’t just drive such a beauty without showing it off a little, so he also brings her to the many Island Show & Shines for everyone to admire close up. She has brought him many rewards at the shows as in life all together. This Anglia is one of a few of Wayne’s car collection as he also has a ‘55 Chevy completed in his garage and starting to work on a ‘61 Anglia in which you are sure to see at future show & shines!

MOTOCROSS
Monster Energy Motocross Nationals
by Jim Muir Huge crowds show up each year for the Monster Energy Motocross National round in Nanaimo.
Coming to Nanaimo Vancouver Island race fans are very fortunate
when it comes to Motocross. There are nine rounds in the Monster Energy Motocross Nationals, and despite the expense of the ferry ride to get here, Nanaimo is on the calendar! ‘The Wastelands’ track is among the very best in the country, and each year the best riders
in the country, and some of the best in North America, make the trek across the water to race here. The Nanaimo track, in conjunction with the Vancouver Island Motocross Association (VIMX) and its affiliate tracks, will host thousands of spectators at the opening round of the Monster Energy Motocross Nationals on Sunday June 3rd. Pro racing starts just after noon on Sunday, but the weekend begins on Saturday with Amateur racing (Round 6 of the VIMX/CMRC Island Championship Series). The Canadian Pro Motocross Nationals have become an elite series under the sanctioning of the Canadian Motorcycle Racing Club (CMRC), good enough to draw many top riders up from the United States, which is the recognized world capital of Motocross. Every round is broadcast on television and covered extensively in MXP Magazine, Canada’s #1 motocross mag. There’s nothing quite like a motocross Pro National. Representatives from the Canadian

Motorcycle Racing Club show up early in the week and start setting up tents and preparing the track. Jumps are redesigned to give the Pros the launch they need to clear huge obstacles, and the ground is tilled and banked up so riders can maintain terminal velocity through the corners. The facility is abuzz with activity all week getting the grounds ready for the event. Sometime Friday night or Saturday morning all the big rigs start arriving with the best riders in the country, and some of the best from south of the border. The huge eighteen-wheelers open up and set up tents, and the factory bikes are lined up on stands alongside the trailer. Factory mechanics go to work preparing the bikes while the riders sign their autographs on posters to hand out to fans. Saturday is Amateur racing; many of the fastest young riders racing Saturday will also attempt to qualify for the National event on Sunday. It’s always a great opportunity to see some of

the best up-and-coming riders race. There are usually about half a dozen Amateurs racing Saturday who make it into the big show on Sunday. Last year 15-year-old local sensation Ryan Lalonde, who rides for SG Power in Victoria, not only qualified for the Pro races but finished just outside the top 20! This is a phenomenal feat for such a young racer, and island MX enthusiasts fully expect he will improve on his finish this year!
Speaking of ‘beautiful things’, the beautiful Monster Energy girls are always on hand to cater to fan’s thirst, and provide photo ops!
Ryan Lalonde (730) works his way inside Peter Swanwick (331) at a VIMX/CMRC event in Campbell River last year. www.viperformance.ca
Qualifying for the Pros begins at just after nine on Sunday morning. As fast as some of the Amateurs are on Saturday, it’s always a revelation to see the Pros hit the track on Sunday!
It’s a spectacular thing to see some of the best MX riders in the world rip up the track. The Pros are divided into two classes: the premiere MX1 class consists of 450cc 4-stroke machines, and the MX2 class is 250cc 4-stroke machines. It’s legal to race 2-stroke machines, you’re allowed approximately half the displacement, but 4-strokes have become so dominant you aren’t likely to see any 2-strokes at the Pro level. Eighty riders will qualify, forty for each class, out of about 125 who show up to try. British Columbia and Vancouver Island are well represented at the Pro level; in fact the current #2 rider in MX1, and former National Champion Dusty Klatt, hails from Campbell River right here on

the island! You will have lots of local talent to cheer for at the Nationals! In the MX2 class Kyle Beaton and Spencer Knowles are two more B.C. products that run consistently in the top five. Beaton placed as high as 11th this year south of the border in the highly competitive A.M.A. Supercross series. Both Beaton and Knowles have to be considered top contenders for the MX2 title this year.
Dusty Klatt, from Campbell River, has been at the very front of the pack in Canadian Motocross for many years now. He’s a multi-time National Champion, including last year when he wore the #1 plate. This year he will ride a KTM with the #2 plate.
If you want more motocross after you get a taste for it at the Nationals, there’s lots of racing going on across the island. VIMX/CMRC island racing is divided into an eight race ‘Island Championship Series’, and a five race ‘VIMX Club Series’ in the fall. You can get more information by contacting the Vancouver Island Motocross Association or any of the tracks: Nanaimo Motocross Association, Campbell River Motocross Association, or the Port Alberni Motocross Association.
Spencer Knowles (21) was blazing fast in Nanaimo last year and finished the day in 4th place overall.
You can see full coverage race reports each week, complete with hundreds of photos, at SeehorseCreativeMedia/blog/motocross. The top two riders in the country for the past several years are both B.C. boys! Here Klatt (1) chases Colton Facciotti (10) who went on to win last year’s MX1 Championship. Facciotti will carry the #1 plate on his new factory KTM at this year’s Nationals.

Another B.C. product consistently putting him in the top ten in the MX1 class is Broc Hoyer (29). Despite only competing in half the series Hoyer finished 14th overall in the MX1 class last year.

1906 Züst A
famous piece of history in the automotive industry hides right here on Vancouver Island with the 1906 Züst that came in third place in the 1908 New York to Paris, “Great Race Around the World”! The race started on February 12, 1908 in Times Square, New York with six cars from France, Germany, Italy and the United States. Note the season in which they started – not exactly the best road conditions. Only three cars made it to the final destination in Paris. The final three included The Züst from Italy in third place, the Protos from Germany in second and in first place, the Thomas Flyer from U.S.A. This changed history in the fact that it was this race where people began to see the automobile’s true potential, thus boosting the automotive industry. The newspaper industry stingily benefited from this race as well as everybody had to get the next issue to follow the race. Communication and mobility were strong forces of change in the history of humanity and this Züst was part of that history surviving harsh weather, storms, break downs and other hardships along the way in “The Great Race Around the World”, and lives today on beautiful Vancouver Island.
New York to Paris
So what do you do when you come across such a find? Research. That’s what Shirley and Harry Blackstaff did when they purchased this rarity from “Buck” Rogers of Vancouver, B.C. in 1980. The inspiration started with the gift of a journal
20 | VI Performance Magazine
www.viperformance.ca
Volume 1 | Issue 3
along with the purchase of the car. They were told the journal was written by Antonio Scarfoglio who was a journalist and one of the four crew members of the Züst during the race. It was a difficult task to race in those times at such a distance, hence they finished the race with only two crew members; Heinrich Haaga and Antonio Scarfoglio. The journal proved to be a valuable source for comparing the repair evidence found on the Züst, thereby authenticating the exact car in the Blackstaff’s possession as the one from the great race. Harry and his brother, Jim were excited to have the privilege of restoring this incredible piece of history. The original car, founded by Roberto Züst was engineered in the Italian car manufacturing company which was in operation from 1905 to 1917. This one of a kind machine was powered by a 28/45 HP, Four Cylinder L-Head Engine on a 114 inch wheel base with a multiple disc, and four speed clutch. All the engine and general specs were important, but she still required some modifications in order to claim such a feat of pushing through tough terrains and varied weather. A leather windshield was installed to shield the driver in cold stormy or windy weather. A wooden trunk was also a necessary addition behind the rear seat for storage of spare parts, clothing, food, medicine, furs, axes, and
www.viperformance.ca
various other tools and emergency equipment. Fully loaded, she weighed a whopping 3,520 pounds! These modifications required painstaking detailed work to replicate authentically. The Züst truly experienced amazing craftsmanship in her restoration process from a talented, hard working family and their friends. Some of the parts had to be moulded from equipment that is no longer made, so they set out on a mission and purchased original factory equipment from which to build the parts. Many of the parts had to be made by hand as there just wasn’t a machine to do so. For a detailed history of the 1906 Züst and the Great Race Around the World, please go to http://1906zust.com Many thanks to Shirley and Harry for taking the time to show me their shop with their many restoration projects as well as the Züst, and for passing along the book they published called, “Paris or Bust 1906 Züst” written by Shirley Blackstaff who took a great deal of care in making sure all the details were accurate from a historical standpoint. by Mona-Lisa Carstensen

Tri-Port
Speedway
(A.K.A. North Island Exhibition Grounds) is located on the Northern end of Vancouver Island, in B.C. Canada. Situated approximately 2 1/2 hours North of Campbell River, and 2 kms south of Port Hardy, this 1/4 mile clay oval track offers some of the best racing on the island, with drivers getting more seat time and payouts. Adjacent to the track, we have an area for the drivers and pit crew to park overnight. There are camp grounds and hotels to be found, all within easy reach of the track, as well as some ex-
cellent restaurants. On site, our concession offers up some awesome food. Our admission prices are the lowest on the island, making for a very low cost family outing. Shortly after the racing ends, the fans are welcome to enter the pit area to view the cars and talk to the drivers. A normal race day will consist of a Trophy Dash, 2 Heat Races and a Main Event for each class. Special events will include IMCA Modifieds and Roadhog cars. For those of you unfamiliar with our track, we are a club owned and operated non-profit
Tri-Port Speedway

Volume 1 | Issue 3 organization, run by it’s members and with volunteer help. The track was built with many hours of volunteer help and donated equipment. Every position on any race day is filled by volunteers, and we are always looking for new people to come out and give it a try. If you are interested in getting into the thick of things, feel free to approach one of our members or operating staff on any given race day. See the racing from a new and exciting perspective! Your help would be greatly appreciated!

Cassidy Speedway
I am taking my BA in Psychology,
Sociology and Digital Media Studies, as well as publishing VI Performance Magazine, so my time is limited and I need to focus my energy where I can be most successful, therefore I just can’t continue putting my time and energy into trying to re-open Cassidy Speedway. The neighbours clearly don’t want us there and do not invite our ideas of coming to compromises of offering the community use of the land during the 70% of time that is not race season for horse-back riding trails, off-leash dog area, baseball diamond, community hall, and youth program as they are content with travelling to Ladysmith for all these activities and simply don’t want anything brought into their community. So, it is guaranteed to be a time consuming, funds consuming, uphill battle that I just can’t do. It requires much more man power than what we had as well as a large
amount of money to pay for the environmental studies, paperwork fees, lawyer fees, etc that are part of the application to rezone. On top of that, there was a supreme court order against the use of this land for automotive racing. This also would have had to be ammended and passed in the Supreme Court of Canada in Victoria, BC. I have to thank everyone who came to the Cassidy Speedway Campaign meetings and a huge thanks to those who helped clean up the track. I feel sadness that I am letting you all down in ending my efforts to reopen the track. I would still love to find a place in Central Vancouver Island Area to race cars of all sorts , so keep your eyes open for opportunities and keep the buzz going that we want a track in the Central Vancouver Island Area!
Sincerely, Mona-Lisa Carstensen

Doug
ic he n s R L i ke s Ne w
Challenge By Ken Keating
Doug Richens began racing in the Late Model Series in 2008. Previous to that he spent his time racing in the Claimer Series, Figure 8s, Demo Trucks, and Demo Cars. He was asked to help Dave Reside with his car and in doing so they found an old car in pieces and collectively put the pieces back together and put Doug in the drivers seat. He got his start with the Claimer Series in 2003 and drove with that Series for two years. His first ever Demo race was at Saratoga racing with a big Cadillac where he enjoyed some success. Racing in Victoria, he won the mid season Barrie Goodwin Championship Trophy in 2006, and defended that title the following year as well. Doug was successful in driving to a Feature win in one of the many trailer races held at Western Speedway. This is a little difficult pulling a trailer, crashing your opponents trailer, and trying to keep control of your vehicle at the same time. His most successful year was in 2007 with the Demo Car Series. His nickname is Doug “The Slug but that was further from the truth back then as he had a very fast car winning three Feature events and drove to the Demo Car Championships that year. One of his most successful

Volume 1 | Issue 3 events, during his Championship year, was running in the Can-Am Demo Team Challenge. Richens completed thirty-two laps which was the highest lap count, in the allotted time frame, of any previous Team Challenge and leading Team Canada to the victory. In 2008. Doug traded his Demo Car and entered the Late Model Series where its a little more difficult than he expected. He took his car to Saratoga to drive in the Katana Boat Sportsman race where he had a top ten finish, drove in two races at Penticton under that banner and gained another top ten finish for the two day event, and the ASA Advance Testing Tour BC Late Model sanctioned Canada 200 held in Victoria. Doug has had a lot of help along the way with great support from his father Dave, his mother Pam, and his sister Sarah who is instrumental in all the numbers on his car including his Demos. Doug is excited about the upcoming Keg Steakhouse & Bar Driver Challenge on Saturday, May 12 as he feels the competition will be very high with the calibre of drivers expected to take part. His goal is to take part in each event and at season’s end would like to place anywhere in the top ten.

Damian Cownden’s Top Fuel Harley Does Well!
uir M dia m i by J eative Me e Cr s r o h - See didn’t know what to exIpectreally as I made my way to Steve Drane Harley Davidson to meet Damian Cownden. I haven’t met a lot of drag racers. I suspected that if this guy crawled on top of a 900 horsepower nitro burning bomb, and endured 3-4 G’s propelling himself at over 220 mph down a 1/4 mile strip in just over 6 seconds, he clearly had a screw loose somewhere! Surprisingly, you wouldn’t know it to talk to him. I was instantly struck by Damian Cownden’s humility and patient, articulate manner. When I suggested that he piloted the quickest/fastest Harley in Canada, he was quick to explain the discrepancies in clocking
46 | VI Performance Magazine
top speeds, and admitted one of his personal best records might not be accurate. That said, there’s no denying he’s a 2 time Canadian Top Fuel Champion, holds the officially ‘backed up’ Canadian speed record of 222.99 mph at 1/4 mile, and has the quickest 1/8th mile time (4.12 sec) and 1/4 mile time (6.33 sec) recorded on Canadian soil. As he put it in his understated manner, “We do well”. Cownden started racing at local sand drags in 2005 and did well. After witnessing a nitro bike blow up he swore he would never ride one, but apparently 130mph just didn’t do it for him, so after consulting with R.E.Cycle owner Ron Janssen he went ahead and built
his first nitro bike. His second run on that bike set a World Sand Drag Record! Again...he did well. In 2006 Steve Drane stepped up and bought Cownden a Top Fuel Nitro Harley. In just over a year Cownden had gone from racing a buddy’s bike at the local sand drags to racing in Vegas against the top bikes on the continent! Cownden started racing his current bike in 2008, and has won the Canadian Top Fuel Championship on it for the past two years.
