We aren’t for everyone. It’s true.. If you’re looking for cookie cutter, if you’re looking for what the neighbors have, if you’re looking for more of the same, then you’re in luck. There are a lot of design teams out there doing just that. But you won’t find that at idMl.

Every space that we design is as thoughtfully unique as the client it represents. Drop by our website or our showroom for a taste of what we’re about.

Letter from the Publisher

M

Jeff Watson

any of my fondest memories throughout life can be attributed to the holidays. The traditional opening-day hunt with my father in Tennessee always signaled that Thanksgiving was just days away. Of course, the holidays would not be complete without the hustle and bustle of early morning shopping on Black Friday with my Mother. While much of this has moved to online, there was no shortage of traffic from Inlet Beach to Destin and all along 30A this year. While frequently visiting for over twenty years (like many others in the beginning) I thought of 30A and the coast as a vacation destination. It was only once we moved here that I began to see the beauty of spending the holidays locally. Magnificent light displays, beautiful scenery, manageable traffic, great shopping and yes our mild climate are all part of the allure. And I don’t think I’m the only one that feels this way!

In fact, the winter holidays with all of its spectacular parties and events often rival the popular summer holidays as more and more second home owners, snowbirds and winter vacationers make 30A their Holiday destination. Not to mention the rapidly growing permanent population with no reason to leave paradise. Our new motto for friends and family…y’all come here! During the busiest shopping time of the year, let’s not forget to take time to appreciate and enjoy the many blessings we have in our lives and to remember the true meaning of Christmas—Christ. It is this time of year when giving a lending hand to those in need and spending quality time with those we love are the best gifts anyone could give or receive. I would like to thank you, the dedicated reader and our loyal advertisers, for making 2023 a great year for VIP 30A Magazine. Special thanks to our staff for the long hours and dedication it takes to bring together in print so many aspects of our community. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

usiness After Hours is a popular event held monthly by the Walton Area Chamber of Commerce. This event is a great opportunity to network with chamber members as well as guest while enjoying food and refreshments. Each month a different chamber member is chosen as the event sponsor hosting the festivities at their business location. Recently, Hotel Effie was the host of Business After Hour. The hotels Ara Rooftop Pool & Lounge is both a luxurious pool experience and a stylish rooftop lounge and made for the perfect setting for both business and social mingling. Widely know as one of the areas most beautiful sunset locations with panoramic views of both the Bay and the Gulf while overlooking Sandestin Marina, this evening did not disappoint as vibrant sunset colors painted the water and sky!

ine Down Wednesday, a first-year event hosted by Ascension Sacred Heart Foundation, was held at the beautiful Ambrosia 30A in Inlet Beach. This lovely evening on the patio of Ambrosia was a well orchestrated fundraiser benefiting Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast NICU and Family Birth Place. The NICU opened in 2020 and cares for infants born prematurely up to two months early, who weigh more than 3.3 pounds and is a tremendous asset to our local communities. Guests enjoyed this coastal restaurant’s talented culinary team serving heavy hors ‘d’oeuvres along with Caymus Wines to accompany the decadent bites. Attendees mingled with community leaders and local philanthropist while enjoying the opportunity to participate in a wine pull, sponsored by Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices PenFed Realty while entertained with live music by Jacob Mohr.

Story & Photography by Whitley Dunn

F

riday night, October 27th, Alys Beach hosted this year’s 3rd annual Firkin Fête. This event is a unique tasting experience with tapped firkins of beer created by local and regional breweries. The firkins, each an 11-gallon keg, are unique in that no one, including the brewers themselves, can know what the final product will taste like until the firkins are tapped for the event. Firkin Fête also featured live music performances and the culinary creations of chefs from throughout the southeast. This festive evening was a great warm up party for Saturday’s Spirited Soiree which is the culmination of the four days of amazing events, all part of Crafted! Alys Beach Crafted was created to celebrate the collaboration of talents that come together on 30A. Crafted actually sprung from the success of the debut of Firkin Fete in 2019 and aims to tell the stories of crafted beverages, culinary experiences, artistry and workmanship created by renowned craftspeople from around the country. Work shops and spirited seminars along with a markers market and mixologist meet and greet were all part of the week of festivities at Alys Beach!

Story by Kimberly Weeks & Photos by Jeff Watson he third annual Run for the Rosemary 5K fun run and walk was held Saturday October 7, 2023. It was a perfect start to our annual homeowners’ weekend here in Rosemary Beach, FL. This year’s event welcomed 220 runners and walkers which was an increase by almost 100 from 2022. In its inception this fun run/walk was to bring friends, neighbors and strangers together while sharing the beauty of our town. It was always part of our goal to give back to our community. We are proud to say that for all three years we have been able to donate our proceeds to Food For Thought Outreach. This year we are thrilled to report that we are donating $5550.00. These funds are to provide meals to food insecure students throughout our communities. Without the volunteers, the sponsors and the participants themselves this event simply wouldn’t exist. We are so grateful. Until next year! Respectfully, Kimberly W (Race Chairperson)

H

osted at Watercolor’s Cerulean Park, this year’s 7th Annual Harvest Wine & Food Festival was blessed with a sold out event and beautiful crisp fall weather in late October. The event provided guests the opportunity to sip and savor some of the world’s finest wine and culinary selections while raising money for a good cause and enjoying the iconic beach town of WaterColor. The organization behind this wonderful event is the Destin Charity Wine Auction Foundation which donates to many Northwest Florida charities. Founded in 2005, this organization, which has been recognized by Wine Spectator Magazine, has donated more than $25 million helping children in need throughout our area. This is possible through the exceptional wine and culinary events that have become a favorite not only among locals, but regionally as well!

Story by Leanne King Photos by Jeff Watson

A

Jennifer Albert & Charylnn OʼHare

dwight ward fundraiser

potter, a rockstar, an icon, A FRIEND…….

Those are just a few of the ‘titles’ you will hear when people speak of Dwight Ward. Dwight has been a local far longer than most in Santa Rosa Beach. He is also quite possibly the most loved and admired man on the A. On a beautiful evening in August as Dwight, the world’s most devoted fan of his beloved niece Casey Kearney, watched her perform all his favorites songs he suffered a massive stroke. Hearts broke as we were all told that, short of a miracle, he was not expected to recover. Then came the miracle…… Dwight has been working so hard since the stroke to get better and get home. Inpatient therapy is challenging and helpful but coming to an end. As heads got together on how to make the return home possible for Dwight, an idea was formed and a fundraiser was born. Well, Dancing on the Deck may have begun as a fundraiser but quickly became a festival of love. The stage was constantly changing as talent after talent performed. There were tears as musicians sang the songs they had written for Dwight. There was laughter as countless stories were told of everyone’s personal friendship with Dwight. (Each of us wanting to think ours is the best) You could feel the love vibrating through the air. All the money from the wristbands, live auction and donations will go toward making Dwight’s transition home possible. And don’t forget, “If it is too loud, you are too old”.

aring & Sharing of South Walton hosted their Third Annual Fall Fashion Show and Luncheon presented by Emerald Coast Hospice. This year’s event was held at Monet Monet’s gardens in Grayton Beach. Guests enjoyed a silent auction, seated lunch by Grayton Beach Catering, a complimentary drink, & a fashion show curated from donations to the Caring & Sharing Thrift Store that were styled and modeled by Caring & Sharing volunteers and community supporters. ike many things you and I may take for granted in our everyday lives, access to affordable dental care, while quite the necessity, is unfortunately often out of reach for many families -including children- all around Northwest Florida and the rest of the nation. The truth is that without simple dental care children are often met with additional problems that can impact their ability to focus and perform well in school, as well as those that may continue impacting them into adult life, simply because of this lack of something as simple as routine checkups and minor procedures that can become major problems if left untreated. Because of this basic need, Children’s Volunteer Health Network, a faith-based 501(c)(3), was established to serve the wellbeing of this segment of children in Walton and Okaloosa Counties. Now in its 18th year, the mission of Children’s Volunteer Health Network is to meet the continually growing need in providing affordable and accessible dental and mental healthcare to preschool and elementary students, grades K-5, in the now 16 area schools this fantastic organization serves.

• 30

When I asked CVHN’s Executive Director, Megan Trent, just how they are able to be so many places and serve the growing number of children they are seeing, she explained that the organization now commands two mobile rolling dental labs, in the form of custom buses, which travel to the various schools, along with dedicated professional dental staff, and dentists who perform cleanings and other needed procedures from these dedicated field units. “As of this year we have now facilitated over 75,000 procedures for children in the communities we serve in both Walton and Okaloosa County, and to-date we’ve been able to provide over $8 million in free services, impacting over 18,000 children in our area,” Trent stated. The not-for-profit’s director went on to say, “Thanks to the generous donations and support of our primary sponsors, along with people and businesses all across our service area, in 2021 we were able to add a second mobile dental clinic, while also establishing programs to provide mental wellness services to the children in need of those services in our area.”

The event has quickly become one of the most popular charity events across our coastal community, continuing to grow in attendance and sponsorship each year. In 2022 Soiree on the Bay raised over $300,000, which directly goes to furthering the impact Children’s Volunteer Health Network has in the local communities it serves.

COMING IN MARCH 2024

Thursday night’s exclusive Tequila Dinner with Penta Tequila kicks off the festivities, while the main event begins on Friday March 8th, featuring the Grand Tasting wine and food spectacular, followed by Saturday’s festivities, featuring live entertainment by The Tip Tops, from Mobile Alabama. Tickets for the full weekend of events are $1,000.00 and available under the Soiree on the Bay section of the organization’s website (cvhnkids.org), as well as Café Thirty-A. Additionally, if you purchase your tickets before December 31st, you will receive special holiday pricing of 10% off a single ticket and 20% off a pair of tickets.

Celebrating Life... One Event at a Time!

story by

Anna Stockton Contrary to the previous year’s celebrations, the holidays don’t have to leave your pants too tight and your liver begging for mercy. Healthy options are available and can be just as fun, probably…maybe, well, they may not be as fun but your body will thank you as it soaks up nutrients instead of alcohol, vegetables instead of cheeses, and fruits instead of desserts. While you may think what we now call smoothies are an American invention, concocted to sell high power blenders in late-night informercials, smoothies actually date back hundreds of years to Eastern and Mediterranean cultures. They didn’t become popular in the United States until the 1930’s when the blender was invented -- c’mon, you didn’t think we were going to smash up all those ingredients by hand did you? Although smoothies really didn’t take off until people started taking natural eating seriously in the 1960’s. During this time, smoothie slinging health food shops started showing up throughout the country, especially in the health-conscious hub itself -- the West Coast. Then in 1970 a lactose intolerant teen named Steven Kuhnau, who was quite peeved at the lack of milkshakes in his life, decided to blend fresh fruit, ice, and fruit juice. The results not only allowed him to also enjoy a sweet treat, but it also helped with his allergies and blood sugar. Excited about his invention, he borrowed the word “smoothie” from the hippies and opened a shop called Smoothie King.

Smoothies are known as a power and nutrient packed drink, so what should you put in yours to ensure the most bang for your buck? People combine a variety of different ingredients to make their perfect smoothie, depending on things like taste and nutritional needs. Spinach and other greens are great ways to get your fiber and vitamins. While frozen fruits are perfect to add for sweetness and flavor while also packing in the vitamins and cooling off your smoothie without watering it down. Protein powders boost your nutrients and protein without overpowering the flavor. Other good additions to your smoothie are yogurts, chia seeds, nut butters, spices, and sweeteners. Adjusting your smoothie flavor for the season or holiday can keep your healthy habit from becoming boring and routine and possibly give you extra energy to deal with the holiday demands while giving your liver a much-needed break.
