Letter from the Publisher

There is a distinct phrase that is synonymous with fall for me…It’s Football Time in Tennessee! Something about those words takes me back to college days and Knoxville every time I hear it. As I now spend the majority of my time here, I realize that it is football time everywhere. The fact that most people moved to Florida from other cities around the South creates a very exciting place when is comes to collegiate and professional sports. This makes Saturday game days at your favorite local watering hole especially engaging as most any team, especially those in the SEC, will be represented. And I must admit, I catch myself wearing many hats and even a gator head occasionally as long as they are not playing the Vols or Ole Miss. I even caught the words “Roll Tide” come out of my mouth one day, and those used to truly be four-letter words in Tennessee. But in true character of this beautiful place we call home, everyone and every flag is welcome, so get out and support your heritage.

As for where, I can think of a plethora of great places along 30A and around Walton County. One little gem you may not know about is the Marina Bar & Grill in Sandestin, a prime example of everyschool-flag present with the outdoor projector screen back in action.

And of course it’s not just about collegiate sports. It all starts with Friday night lights at local high schools all the way to the big stage on Sunday. And there is plenty of competition on the area high school level, so check out the South Walton High School season inside this issue along with the entire SEC schedule. What an exciting time of the year this is as we get ready for fall and weekend tailgating! So whether you are heading to the stadium or gathering around the big screen. dust off the old alma mater jersey and support your team while having a great time with friends and family.

Happy Fall!

HandArendall Harrison Sale and Emerald Coast Title Services celebrate their recent move in Santa Rosa Beach with a Summer Soirée.

The two companies posed the question, what should we do to celebrate the opening of our new location? Answers were many but at the top of the list was host a party for all their clients, friends, neighbors and chamber members with frozen drinks and cool tunes to beat the heat. Hancock Whitney co-sponsored the event, which also served as the Walton Area Chamber’s Business After Hours and as dual ribbon cutting ceremony hosted by the Walton Area Chamber and Destin Chamber.

The event was very well attended by guests along the southern coastal region from Panama City, FL to Mobile, AL. “We moved, we invited and they came. It’s been great to have the support of our other seven law offices and title company but we also count the community, chamber, client and fellow business support as part of our foundational growth here in Walton and Okaloosa counties,” states HAHS Partner/Member and ECTS President, Dion Moniz.

The law firm and title company outgrew their previous offices at Redfish Village and moved to their new offices this summer at the corner of HWY 98 and County Road 393.  Although, corporate and individual legal work and real estate title work can be accomplished from anywhere, the idea behind the new place was location, location, location for clients, friends, businesses and the future growth for the two companies.

ALYS

ALYS BEACH

CRAFTED was created to celebrate the collaboration of talents that come together to enrich the experience of life along the Scenic Highway 30A stretch of Florida’s Emerald Coast. This new event, sprung from 2019’s successful debut of Firkin Fête, aims to tell the stories of crafted beverages, culinary experiences, artistry, and workmanship. Crafted will be a weekend of events in Alys Beach, a gathering of renowned craftspeople from around the country sharing the process, the inspiration, and the product of their craft at the Makers Market, Firkin Fête, Spirited Seminars, and the Spirited Soirée. Alys Beach Crafted is pleased to announce that all proceeds will benefit one of Walton County’s local non-profits, Food for Thought Outreach.

The 2nd Annual Firkin Fête on October 21st, 2022. Firkin Fête features a unique tasting experience as we tap firkins of beer created by local and regional breweries. The firkins, each an 11-gallon keg, are unique in that no one, including the brewers themselves, can know what the final product will taste like until the firkins are tapped for the event. Firkin Fête will also feature live music performances and the culinary creations of chefs from throughout the southeast. This festive evening is not to be missed!

Spirited Seminars feature four opportunities to learn from some of the best Mixologists in the industry. The seminars will explore the art of the cocktail from the elements of tasting like a pro to special tips for crafting the perfect drink for seamless, gracious entertaining. Preparations, pairings, new craft ingredients and products – these renowned Mixologists invite you behind the bar for a glimpse into the craft of creating beautiful cocktails.

TASTE LIKE A PRO WE ALL KNOW HOW TO SIP AND SWIRL, BUT DIVE DEEPER WITH THE EXPERTS AS THEY UNCOVER THEIR SECRETS FOR TASTING SPIRITS AND WINE LIKE A PRO.

Ease into the seminar with a welcome cocktail as you prepare to experience three spirits and three wines with gurus Christina Veira from Toronto’s Bar Mordecai and Sarah Pierre of Atlanta’s 3 Parks Wine Shop. You’ll complete this Spirited Seminar with an expanded knowledge of the components of tasting – with great tastes and a little splash of fun in the mix.

GARDEN TO GLASS

Join the creative ladies behind Sip of Paradise, a non-profit community garden for bartenders of the greater Atlanta area, as they teach you how to make the freshest cocktails using craft spirits from St. George Spirits paired with seasonal ingredients that can be harvested from your own garden.

WHOA! LOW & NO Sit back and relax into the tropical setting of this cocktail seminar as hosts McLain Hedges of Denver’s Yacht Club Bar, Roy Clark of Mobile’s The Haberdasher, and Whitney Hobbs and Rob Crabtree of St. Augustine’s Boat Drinks bar. Mixing with spirits from our friends at Haus Alpenz and Spiribam, you will enjoy sampling tiki drinks as these connoisseurs share their trade secrets to help you create specialty cocktails with different ABV (alcohol by volume) levels, allowing you to cater to your guests’ cocktail preferences with thoughtful accommodations that exemplify Southern hospitality. The mixologists will showcase the prep and process of mixing cocktails with “Whoa,” Low and No ABV – a skill that will take your entertaining prowess to the next level.

FORDS GIN SEMINAR

Martim Smith-Mattsson of Fords Gin teams up with Miles Macquarrie, co-owner and beverage director of Decatur’s Kimball House and recipe developer for Tip Top Proper Cocktails, and Neal Bodenheimer, founding partner of James Beard Award Winning New Orleans craft bar, Cure, to showcase their products from the experts’ point of view. Discover why (and how) mixologists and bartenders love to work with Fords Gin, a precise and thoughtful blend of nine botanicals including juniper, coriander seed, citrus, florals, and spices.

We’ll journey through the cocktail ages to explore the history of gin cocktails. From the gin punch of the early days to the current golden days of the craft cocktail, the rich course of gin timelessly intertwines with that of the classic cocktail in a story that we look forward to sharing and sampling.

SATURDAY, 22ND’S SPIRITED SOIRÉE features craft cocktails from handselected mixologists from all over the country. These mixologists have been paired with craft distilleries, to create the perfect cocktail. Guests will have the opportunity taste the spirits both neat and in the crafted cocktail and will hear from the distillers and mixologists on the inspiration and process behind each unique pairing.

On August 21, 2022, North Beach Social was the place to be! Summer Haze Music Fest was back for the second year and nine of SoWal’s favorite bands rocked the house all day long. With performances by Electric Duck Phat, Queen’s Ransom, Boukou Groove, Big Phun, The Iceman Special, and more, we celebrated all the great music SoWal has to offer. The day wasn’t just an amazing concert, it was also a fundraiser for Alaqua Animal Refuge. In addition to the music, Summer Haze had a live auction! Robby Amonett very generously donated a live painting of each performance, and Driftwood Guitars donated a custom electric guitar for the event Summer Haze Winter Fest is on November 19, 2022, at Distillery 98 & Idyll Hounds benefiting the Emerald Coast Children’s Advocacy Center. Acts will include The Cosmic Rascals, Hunter & Tony, Chris Alvarado Trio, The Neon Tears, and more! Similar to last year, there will be food trucks and a Sip & Shop with local art vendors. As 30A and Walton County continue to grow at a phenomenal pace, a part of that growth is taking place in Freeport. This small community just across the 331 bridge on the north side of the bay is seeing housing and business development explode due to many factors including its close proximity to the beaches along with a small, welcoming home-town feel. This summer the Freeport Merchants Association held its 2nd Annual Night Out at the Hammock Bay Green benefiting Rise Animal Refuge. Many local businesses set up vendor booths as attendees enjoyed food trucks and a silent action and raffle. Kids enjoyed the bounce house while the crowd listened to a live performance by Shenanigans. Sponsors included Freeport Flooring, MH Carr, Clutch Media and the Hammock Bay General Store.

Takingplace in one of the most productive fisheries in the United States, timed to coincide with the peak of the Gulf Coast’s blue marlin season and located at the South’s number-one ranked resort destination, the Emerald Coast Blue Marlin Classic at Sandestin® (ECBC) has set the precedent for world-class sportfishing tournaments. This annual event offers angling teams deep blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico, red-hot billfish action, and cool green cash. While onshore, both tournament participants and their families can enjoy a variety of recreational activities offered at the Sandestin® Golf and Beach Resort and The Village of Baytowne Wharf. The spectacular night time weigh-ins, held at the Baytowne Marina at Sandestin, are free and open to the public.

Named as one of the top ten big-money tournaments in the world by Marlin magazine, the ECBC’s cash awards surpass $2 million – and with over 27 optional entry levels, there are plenty of ways to win a piece of the pie.

The ECBC is a “modified-release” tournament in which blue marlin are the only billfish that may be weighed. Release points are awarded for blue marlin, white marlin, sailfish and spearfish. The three heaviest weighed blue marlin, dolphin, tuna and wahoo are eligible for cash awards, as are the top three teams in the Release Division and the top three in the Crew Division. Awards are presented to the top overall, release, lady and junior anglers. The top overall release team has its name engraved on the Magnificent Blue Perpetual Trophy, donated by Galati Yacht Sales and Viking Yachts, sculpted by Chris Barela and on permanent display at the Marina Bar & Grill.

Santa Rosa Golf & Beach Club was recognized in the Renovation of the Year competition in Golf Inc. Magazine’s July issue. This distinguished publication is for golf course developers and operators worldwide and their Renovation of the Year competition seeks to identify the best renovated golf venues each year.

Golf Inc.’s esteemed judges chose the winners for the Renovation of the Year competition through a blind judging process, where they reviewed comprehensive packages without logos or names to avoid bias. Winners were selected based on how well the project realized the vision of the development team, as well as course aesthetics, environmental and economic sustainability, among other factors. In the private course category, five winners were chosen. Santa Rosa Golf & Beach Club was named among those five as an honorable mention. www.SantaRosaClub.com

The recognition highlighted Santa Rosa Golf & Beach Club’s $3.8 million course renovation, completed in October 2021. The architect behind this renovation was Bergin Golf Designs, Inc. and was brought to life by the construction team at Medalist Golf. Santa Rosa Golf & Beach Club’s Golf Maintenance Team, led by Kelly Barker, also played an integral role in this project. Throughout the course of this project, several mechanical needs of the golf course were addressed, including new greens, bunkers, tees, and drainage. Since the original course was narrow and overgrown, many improvements were made to the aesthetic elements of the property.

“The golf course epitomizes my belief that golf should basically be an ebb and flow between challenging holes and opportunities to score,” said architect Bill Bergin.

The renovation aimed to work with the natural terrain and landscape by creating dunes with appropriate vegetation. Maintainability was a key focus of this renovation and even adjusted the cart path to reduce turf damage.

“The goals of the renovation and the bottom line far exceeded what anyone could have dreamed possible for Santa Rosa Golf & Beach Club.

From person to person, we had hopes that the renovations would be a milestone renovation for the club for future generations of our club,” said General Manager, Michael Bickett.

Santa Rosa Golf & Beach Club’s new design provides a challenge for the most skilled golfers, but is also approachable for the recreational player. The new design added about an acre to the current greens complexes, which made room for more holes and a more dispersed traffic pattern.

Not only did this world class renovation address the course’s operational needs, it addressed the desire to bring the course up to USGA standards, make it environmentally friendly, and a course that everyone would talk about. While starting the renovation at the beginning of the pandemic created challenges, ultimately the club’s leadership trusted that the project would produce all of their desires, goals and more. The course has improved in all areas and now has a waitlist for the next 2-3 years.
