To Whom It May Concern, Southern Grace Restoration, Hank & Bull Chappell were hands down, our favorite restoration company we've ever used.
met on March 8 at our beach home to discuss our project, I was really impressed with your friendliness, professionalism, and clear interest in helping us refresh our beautiful home. I particularly appreciated your willingness to “cut to the chase” and not waste my wife’s and my time. You helped us understand a couple of tricky issues as it related to repainting our home and our stucco walls. You pointed out some areas of our house and walls that might end up being issues, but gave me confidence that you would determine the best and most economical way to address them. Which you ultimately did!
We have been building houses, remodeling & doing projects for over 25 years as a family and have never had a company be so efficient with time and a budget.
As you know, we met with and got bids from, two other reputable painters in the area. While they both gave me reasonable quotes, I clearly did not come away with the confidence in them that I had in you.
Hank’s patience, knowledge, honor and professionalism never wavered even as we made changes and obstacles presented themselves.
My wife particularly appreciated your advice on our paint colors and whether or not to retain our shutters and screens. As you know, she, and all of us, are ecstatic with our joint decisions. I appreciated your calls and pictures when you ran into some issues with the deterioration of our stucco walls. More importantly, you limited the costs of addressing those issues.
Especially working long distance, he went above and beyond to meet and defeat every challenge.
I will always remember and appreciate your response when I asked when you expected to start and complete our project. It was Saturday afternoon. You asked when we were leaving, to which I said Sunday afternoon.
Your response: “We will be here Monday and there will be more ladders and men on your home by Wednesday than you can imagine.” You continued on to say “We will complete the job as quickly as possible, depending only on the weather. By Wednesday, you were sending me pictures and giving me text updates. Net, net, you completed the job quicker than we had expected and at the costs you had quoted.
He made promises that he kept and did exactly what he said he would do. These are great people first, great contractors second. They deal with subs and a crew that were just as responsible, kind and gifted in craftsmanship. We are grateful for The Chappell's and “Southern Grace” and our new relationship. We are more than satisfied with every aspect of the well-done job. We will absolutely use them every chance we can.
The final touch was when you suggested I withhold a portion of my payment until my wife and I were able to come look at the house in person. Obviously, when we arrived several weeks later, the job was perfect!
PAINT & STUCCO
I should add that several people who have driven by, several we have seen on the beach and at the Surfing Deer, across the street, have commented on our beautiful new paint job

Letter from the Publisher
After publishing VIP 30A Magazine for the last two years, the meaning of the phrase “30A” has grown and evolved significantly for me personally. Geographically, it is not limited to the boundaries of the road itself, but comprised of the qualities of the people throughout the area, including Santa Rosa Beach and all of Walton County. It’s much more than a community or a string of luxury coastal communities, it’s a way of life. And that life is one of kindness, relaxation, entertainment, socializing, dining, and of course, beach-going. One of the more significant qualities that come to mind the more engrained I become in this community is that of giving and generosity.
As we quickly breeze through spring into early summer, many wine festivals take place where this willingness to give and help others truly shines. While these events are exciting, glitzy and glamorous for the attendees, they are also life-changing fundraisers for those in need in our area. I have seen this first hand, over and over, as paddles are raised in the spirit of giving at the likes of Soirée on the Bay featured in this issue, generosity at the Sandestin Wine Festival as well as the Destin Charity Wine Auction we
just attended, to be featured in our next issue. There are also many events that draw like-minded people to the area with the desire to experience the culture and vibe of Florida’s Gulf Coast. From food and wine to music festivals, there is an exciting local event to attend most any weekend from March through May.
As we quickly pass Memorial Day and head full steam into summer, one of my favorite past times takes center stage…boating and fishing. While I could fill an entire issue on this subject, I will touch on one event for now, the Emerald Coast Blue Marlin Classic, referred to as “The ECBC.” Held each year in June in our own backyard, this event I discovered well over a decade ago is a must attend if you are a water lover like me.
So whether sipping wine or wetting a line, we hope you enjoy the abundance we are blessed with!
Jeff WatsonCrescendo!, the seasons cultural event extravaganza, is the largest fundraiser of the year for Sinfonia Gulf Coast. This month long celebration begins with a kick-off luncheon at Bijoux Restaurant followed by Vintner Dinners showcasing expert vintners, celebrity chefs and award winning entertainment.
These wonderful events culminate with the Crescendo! Main Event held at the Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa. This years theme was “Ebony & Ivory” as attendees decked out in their best black and white attire. An impressive silent and live auction was followed by live entertainment. Presented by Setco Services, Panarai, Visit South Walton, Silver Sands and Hilton Sandestin, this celebration of cultural and culinary arts benefits Sinfonia’s youth orchestra and community engagement programs.
Alaqua Animal Refuge recently held the formal opening of their new, one-of-a-kind facility, located at 155 Dugas Way in Freeport and celebrated the momentous occasion with a month-long celebration of events titled “Celebrate! Alaqua.” As the Southeast’s premier 501(c)3 refuge and sanctuary, Alaqua believes that every abused, neglected, and homeless animal deserves a second chance. Originally located on 10 acres in Freeport, the new 100-acre facility will allow Alaqua to continue to do the important work of animal rescue and rehabilitation
The Inaugural Alaqua Wellness Festival was held on Saturday, March 11. This event celebrated animals, humans, the earth, and how each coexists with one another and brings healing to the mind, body, and soul. Wellness classes and workshops, including yoga, Pure Barre, Chi-Gong, sound baths, nature trail tours, educational seminars were offered throughout the day. There was also a showcase of local vendors, live music, and an array of food and beverage options with the day of festivities concluding with a ceremonial bonfire.

The Seaside School Foundation recently hosted Sand & Starlight Supper Club as a fundraiser to help further the mission of Seaside School, Inc. Carol and Dave Rauschkolb graciously hosted this event and welcomed media and guest to Bud & Alley’s for dinner and entertainment, as well as a compelling presentation explaining the launch of Seaside School’s multi-million dollar expansion of Seacoast Collegiate High School in partnership with Northwest Florida State College. Expected to break ground later this year, this is a project that will truly transform higher education in Walton County.
In addition to an incredible dinner prepared by Bud & Alley’s, attendees also enjoyed musical entertainment from Nashville recording artist Julia Cole, Broadway’s Aaron LaVigne and Jenna Rubaii, and South Walton’s own Saunders Boys.

SOIRÉE BAY ON THE
Soiree on the Bay Act II, presented by the Dugas Family, offered guest a weekend filled with lavish wines, food and spirits, This spectacular event was held on the stunning Dugas family estate overlooking the Choctawhatchee Bay in Santa Rosa Beach. Proceeds from this event benefit the Children’s Volunteer Health Network. CVHN’s mission is to eliminate the barriers to accessible and affordable healthcare for children in need through mobile dental services.
The weekend began on Friday night with wine tastings and exquisite food served in a truly picturesque setting by the bay under the stars. Attendees were able to bid for their favorite wine and unique travel experiences throughout the entertaining live auction. Generosity was abundant as paddles were raised often for a worthy cause. The excitement continued on Saturday with bocce ball, bubbly, wine samples and lite bites along with a high energy performance by the Tip Tops Band. This motown style show band, set with the Bay as their backdrop ,was truly electric transforming the lawn into a dance floor as the sun sank into the water.
The Dugas Estate
Thompson 31 Fifty Christy Philips, David Kessler & Teddy Phillips The Dugas Family Sandy Royster & Dawn Royal Morag & Kevin Rosa Bill & Roxanne Wolf Jane Bahr & Dale Trice Jessica & Joe Freer Maggie Yelverton & Jeff WatsonIf you’ve driven down, lived along, or vacationed on Scenic Highway 30-A you’ve almost assuredly come across the blue, green, and white beach ball logo that represents one of the most recognized --and more importantly, well-respected-- real estate brands anywhere along the beautiful beach communities of South Walton
Many in our area know that The Beach Group has been a recognized and revered brand since well before the beach communities of 30A became the place to vacation and own. In fact, the company is celebrating its 20th year in 2023, having served thousands of homebuyers, sellers, investors, and even numerous celebrities from the music, television, film, and sports world over their past two decades of business
What you may not know, however, is the story of The Beach Group’s two founders, Ron Romano and Andy Wiggins. As this story, unlike most of the stereotypical “It’s the Perfect Time to Buy,” “The Beach is Calling” articles I often write is instead a real story of two best friends who decided to do what so many people only dream about: Moving to the beach, opening a business together, and living their dream life… And, best of all these two did it!
Ron and Andy first met way back in 1983, at a two-a-day football practice for the high school they were both attending in Colorado. The two quickly became friends, spending much of their high school years playing sports together, snow skiing, and partaking in normal high school friend activities.
Ron Romano is originally from New Orleans, however, grew up in Denver During his days at the University of Colorado, Ron took a job as a property manager and became the receiver of a residential property for a banking institution in California In his twenties, and shortly after graduating college, he joined forces with a group of Wall Street investors in an acquisition where Ron developed and managed multiple properties across three states. During this same period, Ron launched Professional Property Services, a boutique brokerage and property management company
The other half of this dynamic duo, Andy Wiggins, graduated from the University of Northern Colorado, and began his own real estate journey, earning a license in 1990. Andy had a definite knack for the real estate business, and in communicating with people. He quickly became a top producer, even in the extremely competitive Colorado market he was in. So much so, in fact, that to this day, Andy has averaged over 50 personal real estate transactions per year since 1991 Who else do you know who’s done that for 22 years straight? And while also co-managing a brokerage!
Andy became a RE/MAX broker in 1997, and has been involved in a wide array of successful real estate investments throughout his career --including numerous developments along the beaches and bays of Northwest Florida’s Gulf Coast.
When I asked the two how they collectively define success, Ron answered,
“It’s being happy and enjoying your life. Do that and the rest will follow. It is a very short trip on this little ball and I find myself constantly reminding friends and clients that say, ‘Someday, I am going to move here,’ that Someday is now.”
What makes this dynamic duo tick, both in friendship and business, We asked Ron and Andy to elaborate on their path to happiness and success
Why did you choose this area to move and open your dream company?
Ron: I was on a dive trip in the Cayman Islands in 1995 and our dive masters were some wonderful people that had lived all over the world I said, “You’ve been all over the world Where are the best beaches in the world?” They laughed and said, “You’re never going to believe us, but the best beaches in the world are in the Florida Panhandle. There is prettier water in other places but the best beaches in the world are there ” I looked at my wife and said, “We need to check it out” We came down in 2000, fell in love with the area, bought a house in 2001 and another in 2002 My wife would cry when we left, so with a 2year-old and an 8-month-old, at that time, we packed our things and made the full-time move to 30A in 2003.
Andy: Hanging out on these beaches, after that first trip to visit Ron and his family, made the overnight decision to make the move very easy I had always wanted to live by the water and moving here with good friends made the decision easy My parents thought I was crazy having two young kids, ages three and six months at the time I remember when we first got here telling someone how amazing this place is and the guy’s response was, “You should have been here 20 years ago”. Now we are the ones saying, You should have been here 20 years ago
As a small boutique agency, what makes The Beach Group different? What sets you apart?
Andy: We have always prided ourselves on being a local boutique agency. We are one of the last true local agencies in the area. We have been approached many times by much larger firms, to merge or become part of their franchise, but we feel we bring something people really want with our boutique agency and the service it allows us to give our clients from all over the country.
Ron: It’s funny, we were the first real estate company in the area with “Beach” in our name, and the first real estate “group” in the area. People had real estate “teams” but no groups. We wanted to capitalize on the laid-back resort area and came up with The Beach Group. Our slogan is our calling card: “Always on the Ball, Only at The Beach.” As Andy said, we have been approached by nearly all of the franchises over the years. It’s funny because almost all the real estate sales brands are really just two companies that add different names to their portfolios to sell more franchises. In exchange for the name, they are requiring that companies pay them 7% of all sales and other fees. When you become a franchise they then want you to really become a recruiter and hire more and more agents, so the brand makes more money. At one time we were the largest real estate company on 30A with three offices, but we found ourselves not being able to focus on the market and sales and development. We made a conscious effort to become a small luxury-oriented brokerage focusing solely on 30A and providing greater one on one contact with our clients.
I remember when we first got here telling someone how amazing this place is and the guy’s response was, “You should have been here 20 years ago”. Now we are the ones saying, You should have been here 20 years ago.
Tell our readers a little about your families and your involvement in the local community?
Ron: Between our two families we have seven kids and have raised all of them here in the 30A area. We know all about the local schools, the area, and where the skeletons are buried [laughing Kind of] We try to always be there for local charities and my wife had her own non-profit for years, where she worked with underprivileged children locally. Andy and I have coached youth sports in the area for years
Andy: My wife Michele and I have raised our four kids here, Ellie 22, Max 20, Finn 17, and Lars 15. I am very involved in local youth basketball I have been coaching middle school and high school basketball for the past 10 years I currently coach JV boys at South Walton High School, my good friend, Amy Coble, and I started Northwest Florida Dream Basketball in 2013, where we have around 100 kids involved each year

Ground Breaking:PHASE 2
The Ships Chandler originally broke ground on the first phase of the project in March 2021, with completion and opening in March 2022. The new marine and service center is situated on over 14 acres of land and supplies the area with fishing and pontoon boats, outboard motors, engine services, boat rigging and installations, and much more.
The second phase of the project will consist of a 12,000-square foot building dedicated to engine repowers, electronics rigging, gelcoat and fiberglass work, as well as boat customization. The second phase will also include a covered boat and RV storage area with 170 spaces that can fit up to 60-foot vessels. The 2nd phase has been started and completion of the 12,000 square foot refit center is scheduled to be in service by August.
“Our Freeport location has turned out better than we ever expected. Most of that is attributed to the excellent staff that we’ve put together. Whether it’s our service technicians, service managers, office managers, or parts and sales; we feel very blessed to have assembled an amazing team of people. I’m just very proud of my staff. Freeport and the rest of Walton County have accepted us with open arms and we strive to make things easier for them in the boating world, now and for years to come.” said Pete Jr.
destination for vacationers, group and business travelers, families, and adventurers. In recognition of five decades of experiences, progress, innovations and memories, the yearlong celebration includes fresh new experiences, delightful surprises for resort guests, social media throwbacks and trips down memory lane.
When asked about the success of this journey, Sara Becnel, Asset Manager and Vice President of Development shared, “The secret of the Sandestin experience is in the intentional details, smiles, commitment to service, memories passed down from generation to generation, dedication, and a lot of hard work.” Becnel continued, “We have not simply remained relevant, but have led the tourism experience for guests through a balance of tradition and innovation.”
Guests have already begun to capture their #sandestin50 memories by participating in instagramable photobooth pop-ups, regularly updated and themed for each season of the year. Additionally, a special edition refillable cup is available now at Sandestin® retail and food & beverage outlets for $25. After the one-time purchase, soft drink refills are free for the rest of the year at participating Sandestin® food and beverage outlets.
Four signature beers launched at the resort’s food and beverage outlets this March. Sandestin® beers include a blond ale, sour ale, pale ale, and a lager. A signature wine is in development. Guests can expect to find collectors-edition branded merchandise in Sandestin® retail stores including SandestinOpoly to launch later this year.
Today, Sandestin® is home to seventy individual neighborhoods with fulltime residents and thousands of lodging options spanning the 2,400 acres between the Choctawhatchee Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. It is all interconnected by miles of pedestrian, bike and golf cart paths that weave through groves of live oaks.
Continuing past natural lagoons, fountains, and lakes, the trails follow through an underground tunnel making beachside and bayside amenities safely accessible to all guests. The meticulously landscaped fairways of four award-winning golf courses include The Raven, Baytowne, The Links and the exclusive Burnt Pine private golf course.
Thanks to more than 85,000 square feet of meeting space, onsite lodging, spa, golf, tennis, miles of beach and bay shorelines, activities, the walkable Village of Baytowne Wharf, featuring retail; dining; and nightlife, Sandestin® is also a favorite amongst group and business travelers, in addition to vacationers.
History of Sandestin®
• The land was originally purchased for crops and livestock, but during WWII the military requisitioned a large portion of the Gulf side property to research captured “Buzz Bomb” missiles from the Germans. The very rst military use of American rockets were also tested and launched over the Gulf from top secret hidden bunkers located on the resort that can still be seen today, if you know where to look.
• In the 1950s, the land was sold to Winthrop Rockefeller, who went on to become the Governor of Arkansas, ultimately derailing his plans to develop the land into a coastal neighborhood.
• A few years later, a man named Walt Disney, almost bought the land for an idea he was playing around with called “Disney World.” His plans moved forward, but just a bit further south.
• In the ‘70s, owners of the Indianapolis Speedway attempted to buy the land to create something they dubbed the “Seaside Racetrack” but the deal fell through.
• Eventually, the land fell into the hands of developers with a vision of building a resort community. They borrowed the “San” from the unincorporated area known as Santa Rosa Beach to the east and mashed it together with “Destin” to the west. In 1973 Sandestin® was formed.

The recently formed University of Georgia Emerald Coast Alumni Chapter held its inaugural event, a “March Mixer” at Old Florida Fish House in Seagrove Beach on Saturday, March 18th. Sponsored by James Sater State Farm Insurance [Santa Rosa Beach], the event drew more than 50 BullDawg alumni, friends and fans from across Walton, Bay and Okaloosa Counties. It was an opportunity for longtime friends and new members to gather and share in the excitement that comes from winning back-to-back college football National Championships. OFFH Owner/Operator Keith O’Leary provided a dedicated space for the group and attendees enjoyed a large complimentary charcuterie board and BullDawg-themed cocktails.
In 2015, Santa Rosa Beach resident Rob “Kingfish” Wood created a loosely organized group of Dawg fans who gathered at various restaurants along 30A for informal watch parties on game days. Over the years, interest grew as word spread and, before long, the email list had grown to more than 500. When the Bay County Chapter decided to rescind its official status, the door opened to create a wider-reaching chapter serving the tri-county area. Since its formation earlier this year, the Emerald Coast Chapter has engaged more than 1,000 UGA alumni, friends and fans.

Gumbo & Bloody Mary Festival
Gumbo by definition is a hearty stew made from combinations of seafood, meat and vegetables. At the 34th annual Sandestin Gumbo and Bloody Mary festival, twenty-nine area restaurants, catering companies and amateur chefs put their own twist on this regional staple. The Bloody Mary’s at this popular event were prepared with vodka from 30A Distilling company, made right here in Santa Rosa Beach.
Five local celebrity judges participated in a blind taste contest to choose their favorites. Attendees at the event were given wooden coins to drop in the bucket of their favorite of the day. Competition was fierce to earn bagging rights for the “Best Gumbo/Bloody Mary on the Emerald Coast.”
Dikki Du and the Zydeco Krewe played their authentic Zydeco music while children and adults danced on the green.
Volunteers at the festival were provided by the Fisher House. Fisher Houses provides a warm, compassionate home away from home while their military loved one is in the hospital. To learn more about this wonderful organization, please visit: www.fisherhouseemberaldcoast.org

What is an electric bike?
An e-bike is a regular bicycle with an electric motor and battery attached to it. This motor provides assistance when pedaling, making it easier to ride up hills and over long distances. E-bikes are great for commuting, exercise, leisurely rides, and more.
The Benefits of Electric Bikes
Electric bikes, or e-bikes, are becoming increasingly popular due to their many benefits.
• Electric bikes provide numerous health benefits for riders. Riding an e-bike can help improve heart health by increasing blood flow throughout the body and strengthening the cardiovascular system. It can also boost your immune system by providing exercise and fresh air while reducing stress levels which can lead to better sleep quality at night.
• Electric bikes provide a great way to beat the traffic jam during peak season when roads are crowded with cars and other vehicles. With an electric bike, you can easily get around without having to worry about being stuck in traffic or finding parking spots that are too small for your vehicle.
• Another great advantage is that electric bikes are much more eco-friendly than cars or golf-carts because they don’t produce any emissions while riding. In addition, they require far less energy than other modes of transport - making them a great choice if you want to reduce your carbon footprint while exploring your favorite places. And lastly, electric bikes are fairly quiet so you don’t have to worry about disturbing others when taking an offroad ride through nature trails.
• One of the biggest benefits of electric bikes is that they allow you to travel further distances with less effort than traditional bicycles. This means that you can explore more areas without having to worry about getting tired or running out of energy quickly.
• Electric bikes come in a variety of styles and prices, ranging from budget-friendly options to more expensive ones. Depending on your needs and budget, you can find an electric bike that fits your lifestyle perfectly. Electric bikes are also relatively low maintenance compared to traditional bicycles and require less upkeep over time.

Beach Loving Music Fans from Around the Country Converge On Our Area for the
What started as a medium size outdoor music festival now boasts an attendance of more than 30,000 people for the headlining shows, with this year’s Jam set to be more popular than ever. The massive musical party is right around the corner, June 1-4 in beautiful Panama City Beach, and no doubt will bring millions in revenue to accommodation providers, restaurants, retailers, and entertainment establishments along Northwest Florida’s Gulf Coast --including the communities of 30A.
Having attended, and covered the festival editorially for six years now, I can assure you it does not, and will not, disappoint. I’ve seen everyone from Tim McGraw, Luke Bryan, Old Dominion, Brooks & Dunn, and Florida Georgia Line to Riley Green, Big & Rich, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Kid Rock play to Gulf Coast Jam’s growing crowds of music lovers… and every single year the shows get better while the crowds get bigger. And if great music isn’t enough, did I mention it all happens right down the road from 30A?
For 2023 Gulf Coast Jam’s headliners encompass some of country’s most popular current artists, including Kenny Chesney, HARDY, Maranda Lambert and Kane Brown, as well as well-known hitmakers such as Chase Rice, Justin Moore, Gabby Barrett, Breland and Bailey Zimmerman- with many others rounding out the total 32 artists taking the stage over the four day event.
Kenny Chesney’s late addition to the bill was secured only four weeks out from the festival weekend, having been added as the replacement for Morgan Wallen, who was originally on the ticket, however, has been forced to cancel a chain of concert dates due to a vocal issue the singer is currently rehabbing from. That said, I am quite confident Chesney will absolutely give this year’s Jammers a more than remarkable show for their money.
11th
Annual GULF COAST JAM
By Will EstellI’ve had the pleasure to see Kenny play at both festivals and live at the CMA Awards, as well as, having conducted oneon-one feature magazine cover interviews with him twice in the past seven years (with a third interview set for next year before his 2024 tour) and I can assure anyone who hasn’t seen him work a stage and crowd that he 1000% knows how to throw a party. Remember, he’s been doing this for a while, having packed stadiums around the world over the course of his 31 years (since being signed to a label) producing 20 Albums, 40 Top Ten singles, 32 Number One Billboard country hits, and being named CMA’s Entertainer of the Year, four years in a row.
Across my many years in media, and having attended and covered concerts by a wide array of artists — including other outdoor music festivals — the one thing I am always in awe of is that even with today’s ever-increasing ticket pricing for single concerts, somehow the producers and team of Gulf Coast Jam still find a way to offer such a remarkable package as to allow a concert goer to see over 30 well-known artists, over four days, on one stage, and still manage to make it so affordable to take it all in.
My friend, Craig Campbell, of Campbell Entertainment Group in Nashville, has played an instrumental role in orchestrating various behind the scenes aspects of Gulf Coast Jam since its first year, and has told me, firsthand, that the talent alone runs well into the multimillions each year. That’s not surprising considering the level of artistry the festival continues to secure.
Campbell went on to explain, “it’s actually because of our great sponsorships, and the generous support of Panama City Beach that we are able to throw this level of music festival and keep the ticket prices where they are. That’s one of the aspects that Rendy and Mark [the festival founders and organizers] are most proud of. Bringing great music to Panama City Beach and making it attainable to most everyone.”
Rendy Lovelady and Mark Sheldon --the latter, who happens to also be Panama City Beach’s great mayor—do a world-class job of covering every base to produce and maintain a festival that runs smoother, every single year, than any of this size I have ever attended in all my days in media. From crowd control to security to traffic solutions to bringing the biggest names to entertain, these two definitely know how to throw a county music party like no other. But don’t take my word for it, get out and take it all in yourself in a few weeks. I’ll even look out from the pit and give you a wave and a smile as we all sing along.
For additional information you can follow Gulf Coast Jam on Facebook and Instagram or visit them at GulfCoastJam. com where you can grab your t-shirts, hats, and festival merchandise early, and, if you’re lucky, grab one of the few secondary market tickets as they become
