Madison Floyd has a face that many may recognize. For years he successfully owned, operated, and expanded Trinity Healthcare Staffing Group where he along with a team of professionals placed registered nurses, therapists, and other licensed healthcare workers on short-term assignments in hospitals across the United States. After selling the company, Madison found himself with the opportunity to pursue another passion, giving back to his community. Since the age of six, Madison has called Florence home. He grew up here, made friends here, and many of those friends later worked with him at Trinity. This community became part of the backbone of his success. It seemed plausible to take what he’d learned throughout the years and reinvest it in the place he considers home.

Shortly after retiring, Madison began thinking about the intentions of the nonprofit organization originally started by he andhis father, Dan Floyd – The Madison Floyd Foundation. “We are a family with a heart for helping others,” explained Madison. Through the foundation, they designated funds to charities and community service organizations that were dear to them. While

Madison loved this, he felt there was more they could do. He envisioned The Madison Floyd Foundation as a platform to connect non-profits with networking partners. “When researching charity organizations, I noticed a commonality. Most of them had very little activity across their social media accounts. Even though they may have thousands of followers, they weren’t taking advantage of that reach.” Madison approached a few of the organizations he worked with and offered them a unique proposition – The Madison Floyd Foundation would incur the cost in their social media management, content creation, and website development. The proposal was well received.

The Madison Floyd Foundation is launching its partnership with the community this month. Madison is working diligently on assembling the perfect team so that they can successfully reach the needs of the organizations they work with. They are committed to active participation with their partners, providing hands-on help for each organization they support. The Foundation is also making efforts to build new partnerships with the community by recruiting additional sponsors and donors.

Have you ever wondered how couples run

successful businesses together?

HELEN AND STEVEN DOULAVERIS | THE VENUS RESTAURANT

How do you keep your personal and business relationships separate?

“Steven and I have our own interest and individual work focuses but the key is that we can always count on each other’s help when we need support. Steven loves to build houses for families to call home. I enjoy building relationships with people through our family restaurant, The Venus Restaurant, which has been open for 43 years. I create culinary experiences for folks and am apart of making memories at their special events. Our common love is for our family and our church.”

What has been a favorite Valentine’s gift you’ve received?

“Steven plays Santa all year long and gets a big thrill coming up with special gifts for me and the kids. However, this year we had the greatest gift given to us, that of LIFE. I’d never been faced with the possibility of losing Steven until recently, he was in the hospital having By-pass surgery. So I must say the greatest gift I’ve received in these 47 years together is God’s healing hand upon Steven.”

DAVID AND TONI STARKS | FLOWERS BY STARKS

How do you keep your personal and business relationships separate?

“After owning Flowers by Starks for 36 years, we recognize that we each have strengths and weaknesses. David is definitely the better designer and I am better at sales and knowing what the customers want. Also, we always discuss ideas and floral styles with each other, especially if we are working on a big event or wedding.”

What has been a favorite Valentine’s gift you’ve received?

“Valentines is such a busy day for us that we don’t really get to celebrate the day of. However, we are foodies. We try to go out to dinner sometime the week after Valentines or we cook something special together.”

CELLY AND DAVID KAHN | THE COUNSELING CENTER OF FLORENCE

How do you keep your personal and business relationships separate?

“David and I opened The Counseling Center on Valentine’s Day of 2000, so we’re 21 years old. I guess we are legal now! We take the perspective that it’s all one life.

We don’t really try to keep business and personal separate because The Counseling Center has been our dream together from the beginning of our marriage. We don’t have a so-called work life and a home life. It’s all one life. One thing that does help is that we have a lot of hobbies and interests that we enjoy when we’re not working.”

What has been a favorite Valentine’s gift you’ve received?

“Nothing we can put in print!”

We asked a few of our locally couple-owned businesses and here’s what they had to say!

TENA AND BRYAN RABON | BRYAN L. RABON, CPA, LLC

How do you keep your personal and business relationships separate?

“We have been in business together our entire marriage, 16 plus years. During that time, we’ve ran four different businesses. Over the years we’ve learned to keep business talk at the office and no talking about work at home.”

What has been a favorite Valentine’s gift you’ve received?

“My favorite valentines was before we were married. I was sick on Valentine Day and Bryan showed up with my favorite dinner. Town House steak sandwich with extra onion rings! It was so sweet!!”

DOROTHY AND DR. ERIC ROWSON | CORNERSTONE PRIMARY CARE

How do you keep your personal and business relationships separate?

“Eric and I opened Cornerstone Primary Care together in 2015. Sadly, he recently transitioned the practice back to MUSC in late 2020 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. While we worked together, I always respected Eric as my ‘boss.’ I may have disagreed with him on some things but I respected his authority as my superior in the workplace. I believe working together enhanced our 31 years marriage. It isn’t an easy task to own a business. Our highs and lows were shared together every step of the way.”

What has been a favorite Valentine’s gift you’ve received?

“We typically opt not to do much for each other for Valentine’s Day or any other holiday. However, for my birthday in December, he surprised me with a 2021 Q5 Audi. He told me that he watched me work with him for nearly six years, never complaining, never calling out of work, and sometimes not getting paid; and that he wanted to show me how priceless my sacrifice was to him. This action meant so much to me!”

WENDI AND ROBBIE NORRIS | FLOORBOYS

How do you keep your personal and business relationships separate?

“We have been married for almost 30 years and have learned a lot about working together to keep our household running. So far the same ‘Divide and Conquer’ principles seem to apply. As Floorboys is in the ‘honeymoon phase’ (less than a year old), I am sure there are going to be many lessons yet to learn. The key for us has always been working to our strengths and get out of each others way. I don’t think it is possible for us to keep our business relationship separate from our personal relationship. We have gotten really good at reading each other and knowing when to give space or call each other a knucklehead and laugh.”

What has been a favorite Valentine’s gift you’ve received?

“We gave our daughter Taylor Swift concert tickets when she was a ‘tween’. We rented a place to stay at the beach for the concert. She and Robbie went to the concert together and had a blast…I got to relax and chill at the beach. We were all in our happy place.”
