Dr. Alan Blaker, McLeod Interventional Cardiologist explains new technology,

Laser Treatment for Advanced Heart Disease Available at McLeod The coronary arteries are the vessels that supply oxygenated blood to the heart. Plaque, which is a collection of calcium, cholesterol, and fat, can build up in these vessels restricting blood flow to the heart causing a heart attack or stroke. With blocked coronary arteries the standard method of treatment is to open the artery with a small balloon over a tiny wire placed across the blockage. Frequently then a stent, a small metal mesh tube, is deployed in the blocked artery that helps keep the artery open. July 2022

In some patients, the soft plaque in the arteries undergo changes with heavy deposits of calcium becoming a hard plaque that doesn’t respond well to balloon dilation.

For patients with severely calcified arteries this calcium can present complications. The severity of the calcium build-up can limit the physician’s access to the artery with the balloon, as well as prevent placement of the stent to the desired location. Of the approximately one million patients that undergo a stent procedure each year, 30 percent have problematic calcium that increase their risk for adverse events, according to the American College of Cardiology. At McLeod, we have a new technology available, Intravascular Lithotripsy, that allows Interventional Cardiologists to restore blood flow to the heart by safely penetrating the problematic calcium using sonic pressure waves. Once opened the artery can then be expanded, and blood flow restored with the placement of a stent. This new technology is an adaptation of the lithotripsy used for decades to safely break up kidney stones. During the procedure, sonic pressure waves, also known as shockwaves, fracture the calcium with minimal trauma to normal arterial tissue. Calcium deposits in the arteries are not related to diet or any supplements taken. They occur because the cells in the blood vessels are not working as they should. This can be a sign of heart disease or simply getting older. While coronary calcification can happen at any age, the prevalence occurs in 90 percent of men and 67 percent of women older than 70. Those with high body mass index, high blood pressure, diabetes, chronic kidney disease or a family history of coronary calcification are more susceptible.

For more information, visit McLeodHealth.org.

Sonic pressure waves fracture the calcium inside the heart artery.

The best way to prevent or slow the progression of calcium build-up in the coronary arteries comes from living a healthy lifestyle. This includes: • Eating a heart healthy diet – especially limiting cholesterol, fat, and sodium • Exercising regularly • Quitting smoking • Losing weight • Controlling blood pressure, sugar, and lipid levels

Calcium buildup in the coronary arteries is not reversible but with this new innovative therapy for the treatment of advanced heart disease, McLeod Interventional Cardiologists are able to safely modify the calcified plaque returning more patients back to a quality of life they once knew.

Dr. Alan Blaker is an Interventional Cardiologist with McLeod Cardiology Associates and is accepting new patients. Self-referrals are welcome. Appointments with Dr. Blaker can be made by calling 843-667-1891.

story by Toni-Marie Wilson, LISW-CP

TEACHING YOUR KIDS TO COPE Nurture resilience against anxiety in your children with these simple tips The CDC reports that anxiety in children is on the rise. From 2016-2019, 9.4% of children aged 3-17 years received an anxiety diagnosis. This percentage shows an increase when compared to reports from previous years of 5.5% in 2007 and 6.4% in 2011–2012 for children aged 6-17 years. The last three years have been tremendously stressful and traumatic for everyone, and this is especially true for families with school-aged children. In addition to managing common stressors like balancing work with family and paying the bills, parents have faced the extraordinary challenge of navigating the COVID-19 global pandemic, virtual learning, increased economic stress, growing violence in schools, and foreign conflict. Parents are overwhelmed, and it is no surprise that their fears and anxieties are felt by their children too. Routines have been disrupted, plans and celebrations were postponed, and uncertainty has become the norm for many. But by regularly practicing a few positive coping strategies, parents can foster resilience and promote self-regulation to combat anxiety at home and in school. 14

Toni Marie Wilson is a behavioral health consultant at HopeHealth Pediatrics in Florence. She is an undergraduate of North Greenville University and attended graduate school at University of South Carolina. Toni Marie describes herself as a social worker trying to make a difference through day- to-day interactions, hoping they will result in big outcomes for her clients. She is a firm believer that positive change on a big scale happens by making small, every day decisions to help others.

Set your children up for success by adopting these coping strategies for managing stress and reducing anxiety:

Talk to Your Kids - While this might seem like an obvious solution for staying involved with your children, some parents find it hard to maintain an open dialogue for a number of reasons. Whether your children become guarded about their troubles, such as struggles with academics or dealing with teasing or bullying, they feel uncomfortable talking about their feelings, or they lack the language or insight into their emotions to talk openly, you can help by continuing to engage your children and reassure them that you are available to talk. Most importantly, use active listening skills by giving them all your attention, avoiding interruptions, and repeating back what you understand to show that you are listening and care about what is being said. You can use this time to process with your children and problem solve together.

Making a habit of talking to your children and staying involved will build trust and encourage them to be open and honest with you when they are struggling with critical issues rather than keeping secrets or trying to cope on their own.

Provide Predictability with Structure - Uncertainty can be a significant source of stress for both adults and children. Children lack the control that adults have, so improving predictability can help reduce their stress. Create regular routines to help foster self-regulation and social development in your kids. Be consistent with rules, set and hold boundaries, and strive to keep unchanging bed schedules and mealtimes. Modeling - Another way parents foster resilience and healthy coping is by modeling those behaviors for their children. It is not simply enough to talk the talk, you must show children through your own behaviors how to deal with disappointment, anxiety, and fear. If you struggle to hold it together when things go wrong, you can’t expect your children to stay calm and collected. By talking openly about your anxieties and other emotions, you normalize healthy discussion around feelings and show children that it is safe to open up. You can follow this up by sharing and showing how you manage stress by going for a walk (exercise), talking to a friend or your parents, or taking a break and eating a healthy snack with your child. Eliminating Unhealthy Stressors - Identify and limit unhealthy behaviors and habits that may contribute to increased anxiety and stress for your kids, such as consuming caffeine before bed, inactivity, or spending too much time on their phone, especially on social media. If your children complain about teasing or bullying at school, encourage them to resolve it themselves in a positive manner, but if it continues, don’t be afraid to schedule a meeting to address it with the school. By teaching these stress-management strategies, you can foster confidence and instill invaluable skills that can serve your children for life. For additional resources, check out therapistaid.com and if you find that your children continue to struggle with anxiety or other mental health challenges and need help, reach out to the behavioral health professionals at HopeHealth.

Leap Forward MUSC begins widespread use of pocket-size, whole body ultrasound system

Dr. Ramzy Hourany, M.D., Pulmonologist, and Brooke Chamberlain, Nurse Practitioner

story by Helen Adams, MUSC Catalyst News

The CEO of MUSC Health has seen firsthand how helpful a pocket-size device that’s going systemwide at MUSC can be when it comes to quickly figuring out what’s wrong with a patient. “Just a couple weeks ago, I had a family member in the hospital at MUSC Health-Charleston. He needed some fluid taken off his lung, and the pulmonologist pulled the Butterfly out of his pocket and began to take care of him right away,” said Patrick J. Cawley, M.D. The Butterfly, an ultrasound device about the size of an electric razor that connects to a smartphone or tablet to give an on-the-spot reading, immediately showed the pulmonologist what Cawley’s family member’s condition was. That meant the doctor was able to start treating the problem with precision – and without delay. Ultrasounds are considered essential tools for diagnosing and taking care of patients. They use sound waves to create clear images of the inside of the body without the radiation that can come with other types of scans, such as X-rays and CTs. Cawley called MUSC’s adoption of the Butterfly ultrasound devices and the system that supports them, the Butterfly Blueprint, a leap forward. “For a long time, hand-held ultrasound has been out there. Different companies have offered different 16

VIPMagSC.com

July 2022

technology. But the second we saw the Butterfly technology, we knew it could be transformational in a way that other portable ultrasounds have not been to this point in time.” The device has 20 presets, meaning it’s capable of doing ultrasounds on 20 different areas of the body, using artificial intelligence. It earned the broadest Food and Drug Administration approval ever for an ultrasound system. Another feature hospital leaders like: The Butterfly is powered by a small chip instead of the piezoelectric crystals traditionally used in ultrasounds, making it more affordable. Some doctors had already made the Butterfly leap, buying devices for their own use. But until now, the results didn’t go into patient health records. They were just in-the-moment updates. That changes with the implementation of Butterfly Blueprint, technology that allows for systemwide integration of the information gleaned through Butterfly ultrasounds.

Rami Zebian, M.D., chief medical officer of MUSC Health Florence and Marion medical centers, was an early user of the Butterfly ultrasound. He’s had his own device for a few years and was part of the push for MUSC Health to begin using it on a large scale in its hospitals and clinics. “The portability of it is the biggest game changer, the price of it also because it’s much cheaper than a regular ultrasound. I think that it does not replace a formal ultrasound, right? This is not to replace radiologist or radiology imaging but serve as an adjunct. And the wow factor is still there. Every time I take it to clinic and I connect it to my phone and show patients what I’m looking at. They love it.” Florence, Marion and Charleston are the initial focus of the device’s rollout at MUSC Health. Aalap Shah, M.D., co-director of the Emergency Ultrasound Division in MUSC’s College of Medicine and an emergency medicine specialist, said the new technology could be a game changer for clinics and hospitals that aren’t in big cities. “A lot of providers have been practicing medicine for most of their lives without having been able to have access to this sort of technology. And so it’s important to find a really robust system to make sure they’re able to train and feel comfortable with the indications that they’re going to be using this for and provide quality care to their patients.” Shah, who is also an assistant professor in the College of Medicine, likes the fact that the Butterfly will become part of the training that students receive as well and be available to researchers at MUSC. Cawley, the CEO of MUSC Health, agreed. “If we start training clinicians and providers on the front end – using a device that’s intuitive and easy to use, it will push us forward in all kinds of ways,” Cawley said. Zebian said it could save time and energy in the process. “A lot of times, people don't use an ultrasound because we’re running, in a rush. You can schedule an ultrasound for a patient, but that takes a few days. But if you take a quick look with the portable ultrasound, you may still say, ‘Hey, I still want an official read,’ but if you look and you see a blood clot or something like that, then you would say, ‘No, we need to do something today.’”

The Heat Is On! story by Cynthia Ford

It is summertime and the heat is officially on! Often with warm weather, there is an increase in outdoor activities, such as gardening and recreational activities. During the summer, scorching heat reigns with a smothering stillness. The stirring rays can capture your breath, forcing a shift in breathing techniques from deep, shallow to an average gliding pace. The increase in outside temperatures yields an increase in possible heat-related injuries or even death. Every year there are countless heat injuries and deaths throughout the world that could have possibly been prevented. It is vital to take preventable measures to ensure that you are healthy and prepared for the rising temperatures. Our bodies are designed to automatically protect themselves from harm. When you are hot, your body produces sweat as a mechanism of cooling your body off. This sweat causes water loss from your body, eventually leading to dehydration. Like a domino effect, other body systems begin to work towards relief and return to a normal balance. 18 18

Excess heat disturbs the body’s natural temperature and leads to temporary or even permanent illnesses. Several heat-related illnesses can occur as a result of exposure to high temperatures. These illnesses include heat stroke, heat rash, heat exhaustion, heat cramps, and sunburn. Prevent exposure to these heat illnesses by preparing and understanding the risk and symptoms. We are unable to control the weather and temperatures. However, we can all work together to prevent heat illnesses for ourselves and those around us. Offer a kind gesture to others who may be unable to sufficiently meet their needs. One method of helping is by providing cooling stations throughout the community. This can be as simple as a tent with cooling fans or as in-depth as a community center with central air. Another gesture may be to offer a bottle of water. Consider performing strenuous outside activities during an earlier or later time of day when temperatures are less elevated. Engaging in outdoor activities during the hottest part

of the day usually translates to higher risks. Wear appropriate clothing to help prevent excess heat absorption. Plan activities and be mindful of weather predictions. Offer assistance to vulnerable populations such as the elderly and children. Educating others on understanding the warning signs of heat-related illnesses and utilizing preventive measures is essential. Many experts offer reminders towards the beginning of summer and throughout the summer as record-breaking temperatures are announced. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) is a central resource point that offers resources and facts for health-related concerns. The CDC provided the following facts as an awareness tool for understanding the warning signs for heat illnesses. July 2022

Baked Beans:

22

July 2022 March 2021

An Independence Day Staple

Thick, smoky, sweet, and savory baked beans are a staple and easy economical meal. Some prefer them as a side, spooned on top of potatoes or for breakfast as some of our British friends like them on top of toast. You might even enjoy them cold, straight from the can. Whatever your preferred way to enjoy baked beans, the seemingly simple side dish packs in a surprising amount of history. Here’s the fascinating story behind the humble baked bean from its origins to its journey to the can. It’s tricky to pinpoint the exact beginning of the baked bean. The most widely accepted theory is that the modern canned variety has its origins in Native American cuisine. The beans were baked in earthenware pots with maple syrup and sometimes venison meat and even bear fat creating a dish prized for its high protein, calorie, and fat content. Baked beans as we know them are made with the same type of beans as those used in the indigenous American recipes, a type of bean known as navy beans. Early Pilgrims, who were Puritan Christians did not allow for working on Sunday, the Sabbath. Most of them spent the entire day in Church, which was usually a drafty and cold building, especially in the winter. No work on Sunday meant no cooking, therefore, no hot meal at the end of the day. Legend has it that these folks would prepare the beans on Saturday, and keep them in the warm wood oven until Sunday. Therefore, giving churchgoers a hearty meal when they returned. The ‘baked’ part may have stayed in the name, but many modern versions of the dish were not baked at all but were cooked over fire. The typical way to prepare was to simmer the beans into a stew with cubes of meat and spices. They were still known as ‘baked beans” even though they had not been baked.

THE FAREWELL TOUR OF AMERICA’S GUEST story by Mark W. Buyck, III

Mark posing at the Lafayette historic landmark in Georgetown

In March 1824 an invitation arrived at LaGrange inviting the Marquis de Lafayette to America. James Monroe, the last United States President who was a Revolutionary War veteran, was in his last full year as President. Lafayette was the only living General who had served on the Patriot side. President Monroe hoped Lafayette would instill the spirit of 1776 in the next generation of Americans and celebrate the nation’s 50th birthday. On August 15, 1824, Lafayette, accompanied by his son George Washington Lafayette, arrived at Staten Island. The next day, 50,000 people lined Broadway for a triumphant parade. It had been nearly 40 years since his last visit to America and the country’s ardor for this Revolutionary War hero had not waned. Lafayette visited President Jefferson at Monticello. President Monroe entertained him at the White House. With his son, he visited George Washington’s tomb at Mt. Vernon. He traveled to Yorktown and spent 8 days there and in Williamsburg and Jamestown. He dined with Chief Justice John Marshall and Secretary of War, John C. Calhoun at the Raleigh Tavern in Williamsburg. He then returned to Washington to address a joint session of Congress. During his 13-month trip, he visited all the existing 24 states. He referred to himself as a “ghost from 32

VIPMagSC.com

July 2022

another world” whose trip “contributed to tightening the union between the states and to soften political parties.” The country was politically divided more than at any time in its history. The two leading candidates for President that year were John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson. South Carolina’s John C. Calhoun announced as a candidate; however, he later declared himself a candidate for Vice President and won handily. Jackson won the overall popular vote by a fairly comfortable margin; however, he did not receive a majority of the popular or electoral vote. The election was decided in the House of Representatives where Adams carried 13 states to only 7 for Jackson. Jackson felt that the election had been stolen from him and the will of the people had been ignored. Many of his supporters agreed. Jackson and his supporters accused Adams and Henry Clay, the Speaker of the House, of entering into a “corrupt bargain” to prevent Jackson’s election. Lafayette stayed out of the political fray and instead engendered feelings of goodwill and comity. After spending the fall and winter of 1824-25 in New England and the Atlantic states, Lafayette and his entourage headed south. On March 4, 1825, Lafayette arrived in the small town of Fayetteville, N.C. In 1783, in gratitude of Lafayette’s contributions to winning the Revolutionary War, the citizens of

Campbellton changed the name of their town to Fayetteville. This was the first of many American towns to do so. There are towns or cities named Fayetteville in 8 states, Lafayette in 10, as well as LaGrange, N.C. and Georgia. On March 6, Lafayette reached Cheraw at 11 p.m. He spent the night at the Lafayette House where he may or may not have danced on the roof. On March 7th he spent the night at Lorick Young’s Plantation near Bethune. On March 8th, he arrived in Camden and was entertained at a ball held at the Camden Hotel. At noon the next day he laid the cornerstone of the Baron DeKalb monument at the Bethesda Presbyterian Church where it stands today. On March 10, he was in Columbia visiting the campus of South Carolina College. He attended an address by Governor Manning at the State House and stayed at the home of Issac Randolph on Gervais street. On March 11 there was a ball at the State House in his honor. Lafayette’s belief in “liberty” was universal. He was sometimes referred to as the “liberty man”. It was reported that slaves were so inspired that they “flocked in numbers to get a glimpse of Lafayette.” During a private reception in Columbia, an elderly slave arrived at the private home on a mule he had ridden from Winnsboro. He managed to push his way into the party and approached the General. When asked if he knew the man, Lafayette replied, “Yes, he is Pompey who waited on me the first day I arrived in this country in 1777.” The two of them shared a glass of champagne. On March 13, he spent the night at the Elms, Mr. Izards’ Plantation which is currently on the campus of Charleston Southern University. The next day he arrived in Charleston for 3 days of parades, balls, dinners, and evening entertainment. Events included a reception at St. Andrews Hall where he received the city’s judges and members of the bar, evening fireworks at the Orphan House, and a ball at the New Theatre.

He spent a day at St. Andrew’s Hall receiving students and faculty of the Philosophical and Classical Seminary with Roman Catholic Bishop John England. While in Charleston he met with Francis Kinloch Huger, the son of Benjamin Huger, whose Georgetown home he stayed his first night in America. Lafayette arrived in Beaufort, South Carolina on March 18th and was greeted with a 13-gun salute. He was in Savannah on March 19th and continued his tour through the Deep South to the Midwest and eventually back to New England. On September 6, 1925, Lafayette arrived in Washington, DC. He once again addressed a joint session of Congress and celebrated his 68th birthday with a final banquet hosted by President Adams at the White House. Out of gratitude for his 16-month tour, President Adams insisted that an American warship return him to France. Adams renamed the recently built 44-gun frigate from Susquehanna to Brandywine. Brandywine was the Revolutionary War battle in which Lafayette had been wounded fighting on behalf of the American colonists. America’s Guest was returning from America for the final time.

BUSINESS

story by Kim Brauss

About 23 years ago, Christy Schimek began a little endeavor when her two children were young as a unique and fun way to raise money for her son, Ty’s, acting ventures and include the whole family. That little endeavor grew to Funky Finds of Florence – her own antique shop located where she grew up. “I grew a loyal customer base over the years and figured out the direction I wanted to go with my business,” Schimek said. “During the fall of 2014, the store officially became what it is today by adopting a name and new kinds of marketing.” Schimek, the sole owner of Funky Finds of Florence, is a mother of two grown children: Ty, now 23, and her 19-yearold daughter, Morgan. Schimek is the youngest of three girls that grew up on a farm wedged between Florence and Darlington counties. “At this time, Funky Finds consists of two buildings,” Schimek said. “There is a warehouse for most of the furniture and larger items and the smaller items are in the old farmhouse. It all started with just the house, which was built by my grandfather. My parents raised my sisters in that house until I was born, then it became a house for the farmhands. It was vacant at the time, and it just seemed like the perfect opportunity and use for the house.” Schimek graduated from Francis Marion University in 1994 with a bachelor's of science degree in mathematics and computer science. “I like to challenge myself. … The business stays interesting because it is constantly changing,” Schimek said.

And when she’s searching for pieces for her shop, naturally she leans toward the more “funky” items. “(I) try to select a wide variety that can appeal to all types of customers. I prefer high-quality pieces and try to find items that you won’t find everywhere.”

Schimek also stays attuned to the collections people get excited about. “Those items change constantly with the trends. I try to get to know my customer base, and it’s fun to find exactly what they’re asking for.” As for one of her favorite finds? Schimek found a pair of hand-painted Amish jelly cupboards from the 1800s. They were made to be kept in the kitchen to store preserves and to keep mice and pests out. Amish are known for their traditional principles and quality methods passed down through the generations of furniture makers. Their skill and craftsmanship are known to be far superior to store-bought. “Surprisingly, I don't keep many items for myself. I try to keep the best inventory for my customers,” Schimek said. And she works to help find particular items customers are searching for. Schimek is expanding this service, too, with a database that will streamline the process. Funky Finds has plenty of behind-the-scenes work. “We typically open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and we announce the hours on Facebook each week. I open by appointment only on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. We offer a service of cleaning out estates which takes a lot of time, scheduling, and labor, but it is very rewarding to help people that are overwhelmed with cleaning out a relative's home. Funky Finds of Florence, open by announcement and appointment, is located at 3592 Cherrywood Road. Find more information and the recent finds on Facebook.

“My sister, Kay, volunteers her time after retiring as a schoolteacher to help me keep Funky Finds running smoothly. She is mostly responsible for keeping the shop pretty and organized while assisting customers on days we are open. She works a lot of hours, which allows me more time to focus on acquiring and moving inventory.” Schimek also keeps with the trends for those do-ityourself’ers: “I carry the complete line of Fusion Mineral Paint, Fusion Milk Paint, and Staalmeester brushes. I do paint some items that are for sale at the shop whenever I can get some free creative time.” The little endeavor launched years ago comes with perks, too: “I enjoy the freedoms that come along with owning my own business like creating my own schedule and the beauty that our more scenic location has to offer. … “I love that the business is constantly changing. Inventory is always different, and every day is different. However, I will always love most of all the lifelong friendships I have made through the business from my customers to other merchants in the area.”

Invested In Making An Incredible Place For Dogs photo by Fred Salley pictured: Samantha with daughters Alex and Anna Grace

S

amantha Jones of Florence is familiar with owning businesses, and her love for dogs launched her dog daycare plan. Jones’ mission is to have an incredible place for dogs to come to in order to be safe and happy while away from home – one with exceptional care and “pawesome” experience. “I started the business because I have four dogs, so basically my house is already a dog daycare!” Jones is the owner of Carolina Stumping and recently sold an ambulance service before opening the newest Florence dog daycare, Palmetto Pawz Doggie Daycare on Palmetto Street. “I wanted to work with them after selling the ambulance service. I have thought about opening one for a few years but never found the perfect time or place. The opportunity came open and I jumped on it.” The building on Palmetto Street in Florence is located next to Bicycle World, Naturally Outdoors, Bean Bar, and Local Motive.

Jones’ two daughters, Alex and Anna Grace, also work at the dog daycare. Alex, a recent University of South Carolina graduate, manages the business. And Anna Grace, a rising sophomore at USC works at the daycare throughout the summer. Jones also owns Dog Daze Treat Truck, but Palmetto Pawz Doggie Daycare took the front seat while working on its opening in November and launch this spring. Jones’ four dogs also have honorary titles at work: Joy, Head Dog in Charge; Finley, the Manager; Sophie, the Supervisor; and Poppy, Fun Patrol. According to its website, “We treat all our furry friends as if they were our own and provide individualized attention so that each pet has what he or she needs for a happy stay!” To ensure the dogs and their owners are in great care, Jones works with well-known Pee Dee dog trainer Margi Moore (www.sitstayclicktreat. com). Moore, owner of Love Me, Love My Dog, has trained dogs and owners in the Pee Dee for the past 20 years. Moore has also been the team trainer on two flyball teams. In 2019, she and her husband started their own flyball team, Carolina Overdrive. Moore and her dogs also volunteer for therapy in a local hospital.

What’s more, Jones combined her longtime relationship with her dogs’ groomer with the daycare. Marva with Gracie’s Grooming provides services to the dogs on-site and has her own clients. “It just made sense to bring in someone I trust. … It’s so easy to bring your dog in to play and get bathed, one-stop-shop so to speak,” Jones said. “Pets are more than just animals to us, they're members of our family. That's why we spend time interacting and monitoring the pets in order to make sure they are safe and happy while with us.” Jones offers a selection of unique harnesses and leashes, and will add more items soon. Also in the plans is to offer boarding for clients: “We’re committed to providing the highest level of care for your pup. Come meet the best dog daycare in Florence, we’re here to stay.” “I love being able to get my love from the dogs every day. That in itself is therapy,” Jones said. “And what job is better than being surrounded by animals that love you all day. Is it hard work, absolutely. Loving the dogs is the easy part; the cleanup is the hard part!”

Jones worked with Moore prior to opening Palmetto Pawz Doggie Daycare “to learn everything we could to be able to provide exceptional care for all the pups that visit our facility. She has been a key part in helping us get to where we are now.”

story and pictures by Erin Daniel

YOGA

In a world where we are so over-stimulated and overwhelmed by our surroundings, it’s so important for us to devote time to the things that actually bring us true happiness and peace. Our phones, watches and other devices have made it so easy to receive constant news updates, positive or negative, as soon as they’re released. We’re in conversations throughout the day with friends and family via phone/video calls, text messages and group chats. Email notifications keep us logging back in to the cyber world multiple times a day. Mindless scrolling on social media has become a favorite form of escapism for many. When we actually get the chance to engage in real world activities, we spend half of the time taking pictures on our phones, so that we can simultaneously post photos to our highlight reels, and wait for our moments to be measured in “likes” and “comments” by people we may or may not know in real life. This instantaneous world we live in has even bred a new term “FOMO”, commonly referred to as the fear of missing out. The Oxford dictionary defines this word as, “anxiety that an exciting or interesting event may currently be happening elsewhere, often aroused by posts seen on social media”, when in reality we have happiness right in front of us if we just learn to tune out the world and tune into ourselves! Caring for your mental health is becoming an increasingly popular topic and in this fast-paced, materialistic culture we live in, it’s becoming an increasingly important one. When was the last time you actually sat in a moment of peace and quiet, to tap into your thoughts and feelings? It’s time to break the continuous cycle of the unconscious, self-destructive havoc these current times have imparted on us and tap into our inner-selves! If you’re a female located here in South Carolina, Jordan Conner, owner of Wholly Beautiful, is eagerly awaiting the opportunity to help you decompress, sift through emotions, heal inner wounds and discover your true worth! She is a professional art therapist and certified life coach who has recently opened her business right here in Florence!

Though each client is unique and will need a different approach, these are my specialties and I can help. Within just a few sessions, you will see positive changes in your life and I will be there to support you with every obstacle that comes your way.”

LIFESTYLE written by Adam Richardson, Church at Sandhurst Senior Pastor

PRIME THE SOUL PUMP THIS SUMMER… When I was a kid, our neighborhood had a “pack” – we biked in the streets, ran in the woods, and swam in the pools. We spent most days roaming around building forts and ramps and taking breaks for Kool-aid and cookies at any given house. The families hung out together at local ball fields, church dinners, and back porches. We were almost NEVER alone. We knew we were made by God for family and friendship. There were no screens. Fast forward a few decades – we’re still made by God to love God and people, but now we’re almost ALWAYS alone. Yes, we are more affluent, and all of our “progress” has given us more...more houses, more screens, more toys, and yes, more isolation. And with isolation comes anxiety, insecurity, and depression. Thankfully, while society has changed, God hasn’t, and we haven’t either. We are still made for relationships, for knowing and being known, for loving and being loved by God and people. Summer is an annual opportunity to renew our souls by intentionally rebuilding connections with God and others. Here are a few ideas to help you begin rebuilding those connections. Pick one and do it THIS summer:

> UNPLUG Turn off the screens! Quit living through your neighbor’s dinner, birthday, or vacation. Live your own life. > READ Start reading a Psalm a day and let the voice of God fuel your heart. Also, pick a good fiction or biography and read it daily. I know, reading is a solo sport. But it sends you back to being peoplefilled, smarter, and more interesting, whereas media sends you back angry, jealous, and empty.

Sunday School 9:00 am Sunday Service 10:15 am 1140 3rd Loop Rd, Florence www.sandhurst.net

> WRITE Write real thank you notes to people who have blessed you in some way. Gratitude is the secret ingredient to happiness. Know any grateful people who are also sad? Me neither. > INVITE Call someone and invite them over - dessert, drinks, dinner, whatever. Get over yourself. No excuses. Just do it. No, it doesn’t have to be elaborate. We recently visited a friend's house for a 7:30 pm dessert that included brownies and ice cream. The total cost was approximately nine dollars. We LOVED it. Plan

a few good questions to ask your guests. Examples are: “Remind me of your story, how did you meet?” or “How are you dealing with...?” or “What’s something you loved about the family you grew up in?” There are limitless possibilities for RICH conversation. Faith is fueled in fellowship! > PRAY Take a few minutes each morning over coffee, aren’t most of us a bit less busy over the summer, and look up. Start the day with a chapter from Psalm (see above) and pray. This will be the best time of the day.

God made us to live His life – now and forever! “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” We show this faith in the Son by receiving His love and loving Him back, out of the overflow, to love others in His name. We are not a factory (manufacturing love) but rather a well (overflowing love from a deeper source). What you do flows out of who you are, but who you are is shaped by what you do. Do these things and prime the pump of the living well in your soul this summer!
