He Says...

I have always loved a challenge. Something about being told “no” stirs a fire within that pushes me to fight for a “YES”. All of my adult life I have faced challenges, each one different from the other, some of them were self-made, but God designed me to be a strong woman. I thank Him for that. Often.

Thank you for picking up the August issue. It’s back-to-school time and summer’s end is looming; however, there’s still plenty of time to get active and enjoy the great outdoors this summer so this month we decided to put our focus on healthcare.

Moving to East Tennessee, starting a job at WKPT selling advertising in a region I did not know and then later launching a magazine in a market that was hesitant about print and with someone I had just met: were all challenges. I faced each one the same way…with determination and a will to succeed. I decided years ago that if I wanted something in my life to be different, then I was responsible for making the change. Not my parents, not my friends, not the government… Me. Over the last 10-15 years, I have done a lot of listening and a lot of observing. I have come to believe that the rules for a happy life are the same as the rules for success.

Some of them are: • Do unto others as you would have them do unto you (we should all apply this to our day-to-day living) • Think positive! Always. It is a choice and the choice is yours alone.

• Believe in yourself. No one will until you do.

• Actions speak louder than words.

• Don’t expect anything for free, be willing to earn and work for what you want.

• Be selfless. I believe in caring about others more than myself, and in turn, they will do the same.

• Do not judge. That is not what we are here for.

There is only one judge.

• Be a part of the solution and not a part of the problem.

Why throw fuel on a fire when you have the power to put it out?

• Listen more than you talk.

• Learn to respond instead of react. There is a difference.

• Learn to lead and take care of the ones who decide to follow.

There are so many more, but those are the ones that I believe to be the foundation of success and happiness.

Lately, I have heard so much about the American Dream being dead…or a nightmare and it breaks my heart. America is what we allow ourselves to believe it is. We are all still empowered to live our dream and to fight for what we believe. When I started VIPSEEN, I went against the grain and applied simple life rules. I made a choice to only focus on the positive. There are enough outlets for the negative.

Imagine the possibilities if more of us put this into practice?

Be the good in the world. Be the difference.

“Time flies when you’re busy” is a huge understatement. Our team and I have been pulled in every direction attending the many events that were offered up in July by this amazing region and the surrounding communities. Sure, we all had a lot of fun, but the purpose was to share our experiences with you by presenting more great stories and images you won’t find anywhere else.

I’ve been so proud to receive a flood of emails, text messages, letters, and voicemails applauding our team and expressing appreciation for our content and for giving the Tri-Cities a magazine to call its own. Many have said that they read every issue from cover to cover and that’s very gratifying to all of us. A common thread among the accolades is the positivity and uplifting nature of our publication.

What we do each and every day as individuals to help spread the word can have a significant impact, even if it’s only telling someone you know about a story you read in this magazine that inspired you.

Also beginning with this issue, we unveil a new look for our popular Physician Spotlight feature. The featured doctors cover a broad range of specialties and passions … both on the job and off. This is one of the few times where you get to really learn more about our medical professionals.

Any time we initiate a change, we do so with a deliberate eye toward our mission, which remains constant … to deliver timely, relevant information that accomplishes three objectives this month: • To support area physicians and other providers in their practice • To improve the business of healthcare for private practices, hospitals, clinics and allied health providers, and • To highlight the movement of vibrant, Tri Cities-based professional that shares our mission to support the practice of medicine and the business of healthcare.

Regional Allergy, Asthma, & Immunology

DID YOU KNOW?

An allergy is an extreme or overly sensitive response of the immune system to harmless substances in the environment. The immune system launches a complex series of actions against an irritating substance, referred to as an allergen.

The most common type of allergy is allergic rhinitis (inflammation of the mucous membrane of the nose) caused by inhaling allergens carried in the air.

Seasonal environmental allergic rhinitis, or hay fever as it is popularly called, is brought on by wind-borne pollens, the dustlike masses of microscopic spores in seedbearing plants. Every spring, summer, and fall, pollens from grasses, trees, and weeds produce allergic reactions—like sneezing, runny nose, swollen nasal tissues, headaches, blocked sinuses, and watery, irritated eyes—in allergy-prone people. Perennial allergic rhinitis is the year-round occurrence of symptoms caused by inhaling allergens such as animal dander, molds, and dust from dust mites. Of the 46 million allergy sufferers in the United States, about 25 million have rhinitis. Other types of allergies can be traced to certain foods, drugs, insect bites, skin contact with chemical substances, and odors. In the United States there are about 12 million people who are allergic to a variety of chemicals. In some cases an allergic reaction to an insect sting or a drug can cause sudden death. Serious asthma attacks are associated with seasonal rhinitis and other allergies. About 9 million people in the United States suffer from asthma.

HOW WE CAN HELP. ALLERGY TESTING. We perform various testing to determine if and what allergens are involved.

PREVENTION EDUCATION. We believe that the most effective approach to treating asthma or allergies is to avoid the factors that trigger the condition in the first place. Even when it is not possible to completely avoid allergens, we can help you decrease exposure to allergens.

INTEROFFICE TREATMENTS. We can provide treatments which can help you breathe better almost immediately and for the long term.

MEDICATION PRESCRIPTIONS. Our state-of-the-art office offers a number of new and effective medications that are available to treat both asthma and allergies.

HOW DOES IMMUNOLOGY FIT INTO THE STUDY AND TREATMENT OF ALLERGIES? Allergic reactions are examples of an inappropriate inflammatory response.

When a person is allergic to pollen, the body’s immune system is reacting to pollen (a harmless substance) as if it were a bacterium and an immune response is prompted. When pollen is inhaled, it stimulates an inflammatory response in the nasal cavity and sinuses. Histamine is released, which dilates blood vessels and causes large amounts of mucous to be produced, leading to a “runny nose.” In addition, histamine stimulates the release of tears and is responsible for the watery eyes and nasal congestion typical of allergies.

Antibodies, also called immunoglobulins, are proteins manufactured by the body that help fight against foreign substances called antigens. When an antigen enters the body, it stimulates the immune system to produce antibodies. (The immune system is the body’s natural defense system.)

The antibodies attach, or bind, themselves to the antigen and inactivate it.

Antigens are any substance that stimulates the immune system to produce antibodies. Antigens can be bacteria, viruses, or fungi that cause infection and disease. They can also be substances, called allergens, that bring on an allergic reactions which can cause serious, potentially life-threatening reactions.

WHY SEE AN ALLERGIST?

An allergist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of allergies, asthma and other allergic diseases. The allergist is specially trained to identify the factors that trigger asthma or allergies. Allergists help people treat or prevent their allergy problems. After earning a medical degree, the allergist completes a three-year residency-training program in either internal medicine or pediatrics. Next the allergist completes two or three more years of study in the field of allergy and immunology. You can be certain that the physicians at Regional Allergy Center have met these requirements as they are board educated and/or board certified by the American Board of Allergy and Immunology.

YOU SHOULD SEE AN ALLERGIST IF: • Your allergies are causing symptoms such as chronic sinus infections, nasal congestion or difficulty breathing.

• You experience hay fever or other allergy symptoms several months out of the year.

• Antihistamines and over-the-counter medications do not control your allergy symptoms or create unacceptable side effects, such as drowsiness.

• Your asthma or allergies are interfering with your ability to carry on day-to-day activities.

• Your asthma or allergies decrease the quality of your life

• You are experiencing warning signs of serious asthma such as:

* You sometimes have to struggle to catch your breath. * You often wheeze or cough, especially at night or after exercise. * You are frequently short of breath or feel tightness in your chest. * You have previously been diagnosed with asthma, and you have frequent asthma attacks even though you are taking asthma medication.

IMMUNOTHERAPY. In this treatment, our patients are administered injections every week or two with some, or all, of the allergens that cause their allergy problems. Gradually the injections get stronger and stronger. In most cases, the allergy problems diminish over time.

Dr. W. Jan Kazmier received his MD from School of Medicine at Lodz, Poland. He was involved in medical research and academic teaching and obtained a Ph.D. degree in Allergy and Immunopharmacology.

He served his residency in Internal Medicine at Franklin Square Hospital Center in Baltimore, Maryland, followed by a fellowship in Allergy and Immunology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Kazmier has published nearly 60 research papers and was a Research Consultant for the National Science Foundation. For over 25 years, Dr. Kazmier has been revered by both his colleagues and patients alike for his unparalled knowledge, skills, compassion and generosity. Thoracoscopic surgery is a minimally invasive surgical approach which is utilized to perform a variety of surgeries in the chest. Similar to “laparoscopic surgery” which has a widespread use in general surgery, thoracoscopic surgery uses a video camera, specialized instruments and smaller incision to perform the surgical procedure. This approach leads to diminished post-operative pain, less complications, decreased length of stay in the hospital and a shorter recovery period. Thoracoscopic surgery enables the surgeon to perform a variety of surgeries in the chest including diagnosis and treatment of diseases without having to “spread the ribs” known as a thoracotomy which is responsible for most of the pain experienced after chest surgery. It is now possible to perform major operations on the lung in the treatment of lung cancer with a small non-rib spreading incision. At the Johnson City Medical Center we have a comprehensive thoracoscopic surgery program; Dr. Palazzo has performed over a thousand thoracoscopic surgeries in his career.

Are you having pain and numbness in your legs and feet, even while resting? Do you wonder what this could mean? It could be signs of peripheral artery disease (PAD) which causes blockages in the arteries that supply extremities with nutritious blood flow. Signs of PAD can include foot, calf, thigh, and hip pain; resting pain in the lower extremities; numbness or tingling of the feet; pale or bluish discolored feet; and slow healing foot ulcers or wounds. Once pain in the feet is persistent, with or without tissue loss, it is at a stage of critical limb ischemia, where intervention is a must before amputation.

The great news is that there are several state of the art procedures that are performed in the cardiac catheterization laboratory at Johnson City Medical Center that can help prevent limb amputation. One example is the minimally invasive foot access to treat below the knee PAD that is performed by Dr. Tariq Haddadin. “Through a small needle puncture I am able to open arteries below the knee and prevent amputation (limb salvage).” Patients return home the same day as the procedure, without restrictions, and have dramatic improvement in foot ulcers in a very short period of time.

Dr. Sakhuja, a Harvard-trained cardiologist who holds five board certifications, first brought TAVR to our area, and he’s currently the only physician in the region who performs it. TAVR has been a passion of Dr. Sakhuja’s since he joined the heart institute in 2011, after training with Dr. Chris Metzger, a triple board-certified interventional cardiologist with the heart institute, for two weeks in carotid artery stent procedures. His exposure to the heart institute convinced Dr. Sakhuja that coming to Holston Valley and the heart institute was the perfect move for the next phase of his career.

Through his work with TAVR, Dr. Sakhuja is able to help people with debilitative aortic stenosis symptoms that can severely restrict normal dayto-day activities and, ultimately, lead to complete heart failure. The only way to truly relieve aortic stenosis patients is with surgery to replace their failing valves, but only two-thirds of them actually undergo the procedure.

Many patients are unable to undergo open-heart surgery due to age or extenuating medical issues, which would render them unable to recover from surgery or anesthesia. Patients who do not receive an aortic valve replacement have no effective, long-term treatment options to prevent or delay the progression of this disease.

Dr. Christina Christiansen graduated from one of the top chiropractic schools in the United States, Logan College of Chiropractic in Chesterfield, Missouri. He earned both his Bachelor of Science and his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Tennessee, where he received the Mosby Scholarship Award for scholastic excellence. Dr. Martin served his country as a Dentist in the United States Army.

Dr. Martin’s professional affiliations include the Amerian Dental Association, the Tennessee Dental Association, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine and the East Tennessee Academy of Dental Practice Administration. He is a founding member of the Mountain Empire Dental Study Group and has served as president and vice president of the Tennessee First District Dental Society.

Dr. Martin has earned the Fellowship Award from the Tennessee Dental Association as well as The Tennessee Dental Association Volunteer Service Award for his service in Haiti

and Dominica. Dr. Martin is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists, an achievement that less than 4% of dentists nationwide have accomplished.

A significant portion of Dr. Martin’s practice is devoted to treating sleep apnea and snoring with oral appliances, which are an alternative to CPAP. He is one of only two dentists in the state of Tennessee to be board certified in Dental Sleep Medicine, one of only 189 in the country. He lectures extensively across the state concerning his work treating sleep apnea.

Dr. Martin and his wife Linda are Kingsport natives. They have three children; Andy, Kevin, and Lindsay, and four grandchildren. One of their favorite accomplishments was running the 1998 Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Kevin Martin joined Martin Dentistry in 2003. He is a graduate of Furman University and the University of Tennessee

College of Dentistry. He is a member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honors Society and the Marguerite Dean Honorary Odontological Society. He is also a member of the American Academy of Implant Dentist, Advanced Dental Implant Study Group, American Dental Association, Tennessee Dental Association and the Greater Mountain Empire Dental Study Club. Dr. Martin graduated from the Georgia Regents University Dental Implant Maxi-Course in December of 2013. This course is widely regarded as the most comprehensive and in depth implant training program in the country. Dr. Martin attends multiple continuing educational courses each year on a range of topics. In 2014 Dr. Martin was awarded the Tennessee Dental Association ACE award.

The ACE award is given to the dentist with the most number of continuing education hours in the previous year out of all dentist in the state. He is Invisalign Certified and has studied at the Dawson Center. Dr. Martin lives in Kingsport with his wife, Amanda, and their sons, Jackson and Cooper.

The mission of Healing Hands Health Center is to glorify Christ by providing quality, charitable healthcare to the working uninsured in our area. Founded by the mission committee of First Presbyterian Church of Bristol, Healing Hands has provided more than 55,000 patient visits and $15 million worth of free medications since opening its doors in 1997. In order to be eligible, patients must work and earn less than 200% of the federal poverty guidelines. Dental care includes thorough exams, x-rays, cleanings, extractions, and fillings. Each patient is asked to make a donation of $20 to see the dentist and $10 to get their teeth cleaned. Dental care is the #1 need in our community.

Plans are being made to launch a wellness program in 2015 called Journey to Health which will provide better access to health and wellness activities to reduce risk factors for diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and hyperlipidemia. In just sixteen years, Healing Hands has become one of the most well respected ministries, always striving to glorify Christ with a passion to provide quality care to the underserved in our community.

The earlier you adapt healthy behavior and habits, the more you can lower the overall risk of heart disease or stroke.

Breast Cancer is the most common cancer in women and is second to lung cancer as the leading cause of death for women. Experts say the fear of breast cancer is sometimes exaggerated and keeps women from going to their doctors for screenings. There are numerous treatment options for breast cancer and it is not a death sentence. Controlling your weight, exercise, quitting smoking, and talking to your doctor about risk and screenings are all important factors.

Osteoporosis affects 44 million Americans, 68% of which are women. Hunched backs, back pain and frailty use to be things older women had to accept, but now there are steps women can take to avoid these problems. The behavoirs that women develop from childhood to early adulthood play a significant part in the development of the disease.

Autoimmune Diseases are a group of disorders that attack the body and destroy or alter tissues. About 75% of autoimmune diseases occur in women.

There are more than 80 illnesses in this category including lupus, type 1 diabetes, and multiple sclerosis. While it is unknown what causes these, genetic, environmental, and hormonal factors are suspects. It is important that women visit their doctors to get a diagnosis.

OTHER INFORMATION The use of opiates among women of childbearing age is an increasing problem throughout the world.

Approximately 1 in every 50 pregnant women are abusing opiates. Because of the increasing popularity of prescription opiads, this number is on the rise. Heroin, prescription opiates such as OxyContin and anti-withdrawal drugs like methadone can have serious affects on your baby as well as future pregnancies. Potential complications of opiate use during pregnancy include learning disabilities, low birth weight, neonatal abstinence syndrome, and stillbirth. Dr. Kimberly Roller, a native of Kingsport, has come home to practice family medicine in the very community in which she was raised. Growing up on the 100 year old family farm in Colonial Heights, where she now resides, raises her two children, and hosts a foreign exchange student, as her parents did, Dr. Roller has a deep love for her hometown and it’s residents. A member of a local Presbyterian church in her youth and a graduate of Sullivan South High School, she followed her faith to Christian based King College in Bristol, TN, where she earned a mathematics degree.

Taking her studies overseas, Dr. Roller attended the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, where she continued her education in both mathematics and religion. After witnessing a severe car accident and tending to it’s injured victims she realized her true passion for medicine.

Returning to the states, she enrolled in East Tennessee State University’s postbacculaureate premedical program and worked at Johnson City Medical Center as a patient care provider for the two year duration of the program. Pursuing a degree in medicine, Roller travelled to the Caribbean to attend Ross University in the Commonwealth of Dominica. During her sixteen month stay there, she was exposed to “everything from leprosy to conjoined twins” and worked in an HIV clinic opened specifically for children. During medical school, she performed clinical rotations in Miami, Knoxville, and the National Institute of Mental Health in Washington, DC before earning her M.D. in 2006.

Board certified in family medicine, Roller has also worked in E.R. and urgent care clinics at medical facilities throughout Southwest Virginia.Dr. Roller encourages anyone searching for a physician to pick someone they and their families can relate to. August of 2010, asbestos and lead paint abatement began at the old Quebecor/Press Building in downtown Kingsport as GRC Goins Rash Cain Construction and CRW Cain Rash West Architectural Services began the multi million dollar project of rehabilitating the structure. PAIGE YOUNKIN As the vice president of Clinical Integration at CrestPoint Health, Paige Younkin focuses on clinically integrating care, care processes and standards throughout CrestPoint with all partners and providers.

Younkin also oversees care coordination and transitions of care.

As a registered nurse, Younkin has a diverse clinical background, including specialties in cardiothoracic surgery, neurovascular surgery and general critical care.

She earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Richard Stockton College of New Jersey and her master’s degree in science from Drexel University.

They have also been shown to be involved in the early stages of mild and cognitive impairment, and Alzheimer’s disease. Patients in the study were ages 56 to 86.

REGULAR EYE EXAMS SHOULD BEGIN AT THE AGE OF 6 MONTHS.

Your eye care physician will test for excessive or unequal amounts of nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism, eye movement ability and other eye health problems. While these problems are not common, it is important to identify them early on. Vision development and eye health problems are easier to correct if treatment begins early.

BE SAFE IN THE SUN.

Protective eye wear is essential to those who are participating in contact sports as are sunglasses for protection from harmful UV radiation.

Your eye care provider recommends that you wear 99 percent and higher UV (ultraviolet radiation) - absorbent sunglasses whenever you are in the sun for long periods. During the summer the level of ultraviolet radiation (UVA and UVB) is at least three times higher than during the winter months. Consider wearing sunglasses which offer 100 percent UV absorption particularly when you are outdoors, at the beach or in the water. Sunglasses with UV absorption are also a must if you are using medications that may cause light sensitivity or if you wear contact lens. Most brands of contact lenses do not offer UV protection.

THERE ARE MANY FACTORS TO GOOD VISION •

Diabetic patients are at a greater risk of developing diabetic retinopathy, a condition that can be caused by long term increased levels of glucose in the small blood vessels in the eyes. Diabetic Retinopathy occurs when the blood vessels in the eye’s retina (the light sensitive tissue lining the back of the eye) swell, leak or close off completely – or if abnormal new blood vessels grow on the surface of the retina. Diabetes can cause changes in your vision even if you do not have retinopathy. If you have diabetes or a family history of diabetes, it is important to have an annual eye exam.

Avoiding smoking or quitting, is one of the best investments you can make in your long-term eye health.

Smoking increases your risks for cataract and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Smoking also increases the risks for cardiovascular diseases that indirectly influence your eyes’ health. Even second hand smoke is an irritant that worsens Dry Eye, a very real and uncomfortable eye condition that is most common in women after menopause.

Pregnant women should not smoke as they are more likely to give birth prematurely, putting their babies a higher risk for a potentially blinding disease, retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). ROP primarily effects those babies born at 2 ¾ lbs. or less that are born before 31 weeks.

A woman’s eyes may also change during pregnancy due to fluid retention, increased blood volume, hormonal fluctuations and other physical shifts that are part of pregnancy. Usually these changes are temporary and resolve after the baby is born. Vision changes tend to be minor and do not require a new eyeglass prescription.

LASIK surgery should not be done while a women is pregnant or breastfeeding. If vision does become very blurry during pregnancy, it may signal high blood pressure or pregnancy-related diabetes and a visit to the doctor is essential.

VISION CHANGES AS WE AGE.

Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss among adults 55 and older. Most cataracts tend to advance slowly and can take years to mature. A yearly visit to your eye doctor can help to identify cataracts early on, but there are some symptoms you can look for including cloudy vision, difficulty seeing at night, halos around lights, frequent changes in glasses or contact lens prescriptions, double vision in one eye, poor night vision, light sensitivity or seeing faded colors. Cataracts are a clouding of the lens in the eye – the part of the eye that focuses light and produces clear images. The natural lens is contained in a capsule inside of the eye. As older cells die they are trapped within this capsule. The accumulation of these cells causes the lens to cloud, making images look blurry, fuzzy or faded.

IS SURGERY RIGHT FOR EVERYONE?

The decision to have cataract surgery is up to the individual and based upon his or her daily activities and related vision needs. If activities like driving or reading are becoming more difficult and uncomfortable, it may be time to schedule surgery.

Cataract surgery is typically an out-patient procedure and can be performed in less than 30 minutes. The surgery commonly requires only mild sedation and generally, no stitches are required. Until recently the surgeon would use a scalpel to create incisions necessary to perform cataract surgery. New state-of-the-art, bladeless, laser guided cataract surgery is now available for those patients who elect to have this revolutionary technology. Most major medical and Medicare will cover the cost of cataract surgery and most people notice a marked improvement in their vision within a few days. Once vision has stabilized, the doctor will prescribe new glasses if necessary. However, there many options when considering replacement lenses. New technology lenses are an option for many patients today. Talk with your eye doctor about multi-functional replacement lenses that help to decrease your dependency on glasses.

CAN CATARACTS BE PREVENTED? Unfortunately, there is no known way to keep them from emerging or to stop them from growing once they have developed.

HOW DO YOU TREAT CATARACTS? The key to treating cataracts before they have already formed

is through regular eye exams. Whether or not you have good vision, if you are 65-years-old or older, you should get a complete eye exam every one or two years. If you already have cataracts focus on treating blurry vision symptoms.

Simply fitting you for glasses or contact lenses can do this. It is common for people with cataracts to frequently change glasses as their cataract continues to grow.

WHEN IS CATARACT SURGERY NECESSARY? Cataracts tend to develop slowly, and usually do not need to be surgically removed in the early stages. You may need to have your eyeglass prescription changed, and you may need to use more light for reading. When cataracts affect your abilities to read, drive, or participate in your normal activities, it may be time to consider surgery.

WHAT IS CATARACT SURGERY? Cataract surgery is a quick and simple procedure in which the surgeon

places a tiny incision at the edge of the cornea, removes the clouded lens of the eye, and then replaces it with a new intraocular lens (IOL). With a standard lens implant, glasses or contacts may still be needed following surgery. However, with new, premium IOL implants, only reading glasses, or sometimes no glasses at all, may be needed after cataract surgery. These premium lenses also help to simultaneously correct vision at near, intermediate and distant ranges.

Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), is one of the most common causes of poor vision after age 60 and is a deterioration or breakdown of the macula. The macula is a small area at the center of the retina in the back of the eye that allows us to see fine details clearly and perform activities such as reading and driving. The visual symptoms of AMD involve loss of central vision.

AMD accounts for 90% of new cases of legal blindness in the United States. Nine out of 10 people who have AMD have atrophic or “dry” AMD, which results in thinning of the macula. Dry AMD takes many years to develop. Treating the wet form of macular degeneration may involve the use of anti-VEGF treatment and/or laser surgery. The anti-VEGF drug (such as Avastin, Lucentis, and Eylea) is injected directly to your eye as an outpatient procedure. Treatment for wet macular degeneration generally reduces—but does not eliminate-- the risk of severe vision loss.

Diabetic retinopathy is the most common cause of blindness in the 24-70 year age group. Initially, people do

not experience pain or discomfort when living with diabetic retinopathy and this disease usually affects both eyes. There are two basic stages of diabetic retinopathy. These are “background,” or “non-proliferative” diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) and “proliferative” diabetic retinopathy (PDR).

The non-proliferative form is the earlier form, and the proliferative stage is the more advanced stage. By the time symptoms develop, the degree of retinal damage may be extensive. If you are diabetic, the American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends that you have your eyes dilated with drops and the retina examined at least annually.

Medicines injected into the eye such as anti-VEGF drugs and steroids are now commonly used to treat diabetic macular edema and some of the proliferative manifestations of the condition. Laser photocoagulation is a well-established, standard treatment also for diabetic retinopathy.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS Dr. Billie J. Minton co-authored Medication Management Bill with TN State Rep. Nathan Vaughn, SB 1899 Dixon/HB 1958 Vaughn Reimbursement for Medication Therapy Management Services, which PASSED both the Senate and House in May 2003 and became law that year.

WHO IS QUALIFIED TO DO PLASTIC SURGERY?

In the USA there is little regulation about advertising credentials. In today’s health-care environment many people with varying backgrounds do cosmetic surgery. The only specialty recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties to do plastic surgery is the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Therefore, certification by the ABPS should be the first requirement introducing a plastic surgeon. This ensures that he or she has had complete and proper training and has passed extensive board examinations in their specialty. A further requirement should be having privileges to perform a particular procedure in a hospital, even if the procedure is to be done in an office setting.

Symmetry and a look that appears not to be operated is what he considers most attractive. Others should know the patient looks good but should not know why. He tries to continuously evaluate his results and modify techniques to achieve the most pleasing and natural results possible. Dr. Brantner has extensive experience in the full range of cosmetic procedures. This includes, but is not limited to body contouring, breast surgery, facial rejuvenation, and liposuction. Many of these procedures, particularly facial rejuvenation procedures, can be done as an office procedure. This provides a significant cost saving to the patient.

The most common reconstructive procedures done by Dr. Brantner are removal of skin cancers, particularly those requiring complex reconstructions.

He also has extensive experience with breast reductions and breast reconstruction. His practice includes a significant amount of reconstruction following trauma. After additional training and experience at the Baltimore shock trauma unit, he has had a significant interest in repair of facial fractures, particularly very complex fractures. Dr. Brantner also has extensive experience in many types of congenital deformities such as cleft lip and palate.

Dr. Brantner graduated with a Bachelor’s in Science from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1967 and then with a Master’s in Science from the California Institute of Technology in 1969. After serving as a Battery Commander and receiving two Bronze Stars in Vietnam, Dr. Brantner returned home to attend medical school at Emory University, graduating in 1977. He completed a surgical internship at William Beaumont Army Medical Center from 19771978, a general surgery residency from 19781982, and then a plastic surgery residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center from 1982-1984. Additional training includes the Baltimore Shock-Trauma Unit (facial fractures), 1984, a Microsurgery course, completed in 1986, and a laser surgery preceptorship, completed in 1994. He has served as the chief of Plastic Surgery Service at Frankfurt Regional AMC (Germany) and chief of Plastic Surgery service, Madigan AMC (FT. Lewis, WA). Dr. Eva Pickler was born and reared on a poultry farm in a small town in North Carolina. After graduating as one of eight valedictorians from North Carolina State University with a degree in Biochemistry, she spent four years working for the North Carolina Department of Agriculture, followed by three years working for the local Alcoa smelter in the engineering department.

While at Alcoa, she also earned her M.B.A. degree from the University of North Carolina – Charlotte. She then traveled to Boston where she earned her medical degree at Boston University School of Medicine.

Realizing she was a true Southern girl, she moved to Johnson City in 1998 for her residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at ETSU’s Quillen College of Medicine.

“My plan was to be closer to home for residency and then to return to my home town to practice OB/GYN.” Instead, she accepted an opportunity to enter private practice in Johnson City where she has practiced general Obstetrics and Gynecology for the last 12 years with Johnson City OB/GYN Associates.

“I promised myself when I became board certified in OB/GYN in 2003 that I would never take another test or exam again. I didn’t keep that promise,” she says with a grin. In 2011, Dr. Pickler attended a oneday seminar on bio-identical hormones just to be better informed. That one day ignited a passion for anti-aging medicine, the practice of which is designed to detect, prevent, and treat aging-related disease and to retard and optimize the human aging process. As a result, Dr. Pickler pursued and achieved her board certification in Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine and completed her fellowship in Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine through the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine. She is currently working toward her certification in Advanced Endocrinology through the University of South Florida School of Medicine.

otary International is an international service organization with over 1.2 million members.

Rotary started in 1905 with the vision of one man. Chicago attorney Paul Harris formed one of the world’s first service organizations known as the Rotary Club of Chicago. Professionals with diverse backgrounds gathered to exchange ideas and form meaningful lifelong friendships. The name “Rotary” comes for the group’s early practice of rotating meetings among the offices of each member.

There are 530 Rotary districts around the world. Each district has its own Rotary clubs, and each district is unique. Every year during the month of June, 530 Rotarians, each selected to lead their District, are installed as District Governors.

This year Rotary International District 7570 installed Vivian Crymble as its 2014-15 Governor in Kingsport at the MeadowView Marriott. Vivian was sworn in by taking the Oath of Office from Past District Governor, Ron Napier of Front Royal, VA. There were 160 attending from all over the District which spans from Winchester, VA to Greeneville, TN. Eighty-one clubs with a combined 3,500 Rotarians make up what is one of the largest districts in Rotary.

The ceremony began with the Dobyns-Bennett High School Band playing patriotic music and the Dobyns-Bennett High School ROTC posted the colors. The event included a luncheon, award presentations and a short program. Members from many of the local Rotary clubs attended.

Wellmont Urgent Care opened May 5th at 1220 Volunteer Parkway and celebrated with a ribbon cutting ceremony on May 8th. t’s that time again! Rascal’s 3rd annual 80s bash was Friday, June 11th. The fundraiser kicked off at 8pm and was held at Rascals located in downtown Kingsport. Leg warmers, popped collars and parachute pants were everywhere as guests were dressed in their finest 80’s attire. The room smelled of hairspray and everyone hit the dance floor breaking out in some classic but ever-popular dance moves.

T

he 2014 Vettes of the Smokies all Corvette Car Chow was held at bill Gatton Chevrolet in Bristol. Saturday morning June 21st was a wet one; with rain showers coming and going most owners were a little reluctant to leave their Vettes outside. One participant stated “this is the first time mine has been wet in 3 years,” talking to another participant. However, the look from the crowd after seeing all the cars was well worth a small shower.

The car club was very excited to raise money for this year’s charity of choice- East Tennessee Spay and Neuter. A non-profit corporation, the sole purpose of East Tennessee Spay and Neuter is to end the use of euthanasia for companion animals by providing a cohesive group of programs designed to help the community.

ven as a child Freddy Martin knew he wanted to help people.

As a child with many illnesses, he spent ample time at various doctor’s offices and quickly decided that was his interest in life.

He graduated medical school in 1989 and has been practicing since. He now owns a private practice in Blountville and is living out his dream. His care for others doesn’t stop at Martin’s Family Medicine however; in 1991 Freddy took his first mission trip and found the other half of his calling. Since 1997 he has headed a yearly mission to Mexico and since 2010 to Haiti. Being around Dr. Martin it is easy to see the care and respect for others and his true need to help others.

Q & A WITH FREDDY MARTIN FREDDY, CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND? I grew up in Blountville and went to Central High School. My parents were both very hard working people and they instilled that in my siblings and me very young. I have older and younger siblings, so I am the middle child. I like to say the middle is the most calm and collected. After graduating, I stayed in the area to get my Undergraduate degree at ETSU in Biology and minor in psychology. I took about a year off, then my wife and I ventured out and moved to Memphis for medical school. Moving there was a quite different than living in East Tennessee. It was the first time I had lived in a big city.

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO BECOME A DOCTOR, WAS IT SOMETHING YOU HAD ALWAYS WANTED TO DO? It was. As a child I had many illnesses so I saw first-hand what a doctor does early on. I became fascinated with the thought of being a doctor and helping people. I think that is what triggered the desire and ever since I can remember I have wanted to be a physician.

After I graduated high school, I began my undergrad with the intent of going on to medical school. It is really my passion; I have always believed it is my calling.

YOUR CURRENT PRACTICE IS A LITTLE DIFFERENT FROM ANY OF YOUR PREVIOUS ONES, CAN YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN? Currently I am an independent practice that accepts cash only. About two years ago, I decided the best thing as a physician was to cut out insurance and switch over to a cash

payment upfront, or a payment plan depending on the person’s needs. It is a decision that has worked out very well for me and patients seem to enjoy it much better too.

As a result, I have been able to make the patient/physician relationship what it is meant to be. I am able to spend more time with each individual; an average visit is around 30 minutes compared to the 5-minute visits at other places. Cash only practices seem to be a trend that is catching on regionally and nationally.

Our entire staff is family. My wife works full time as my nurse and my mother works the front desk. We originally thought my wife and I would be able to handle things but quickly realized we needed another person. When we first opened, my mother came to help us out and she has been here ever since. She loves people and has always dealt with the public so it is a perfect job for her. We may be one of the only practices that are entirely family-owned and operated.

IF YOU HAD TO PICK A FAVORITE REASON FOR BEING A PHYSICIAN, WHAT WOULD IT BE? I love the mission trips I take yearly. There I am actually able to do what I am trained to do without all of the red tape. I enjoy being able to take care of the patient’s needs and treating them like a person; we are able to provide care that people would not have access to otherwise. That is quite a blessing.

PLEASE TELL US SOME MORE ABOUT THESE MISSION TRIPS. My first trip was in 1991. I was in residency at the time and we traveled to Mexico near the border close to Tijuana in an outpatient clinic. I worked closely with a Mexican physician.

It was quite an experience because neither one of us could communicate. He didn’t know how to speak English and I didn’t know how to speak Spanish. We were only able to communicate some with medical terms.

One of the circumstances I remember most is when I delivered twins. A young lady came in ready to deliver. The doctor asked me if I would like to do the delivery and I said sure.

What he didn’t tell me is that she was having twins. When I delivered what I thought was the only baby, it wasn’t breathing. I handed the baby off to a few nursing students I brought with me. We were able to revive the baby; thankfully babies are very resilient. I turned back to the mother only to find out that she was having another baby! That was a surprise and funny enough, my first set of twins.

That was my first mission trip. I didn’t go back until about 1997 when I went further down into Mexico. I went with a group of college students from Campus Student Fellowship at ETSU who were going to put a tile roof on the nursing home at the mission. On that trip I met the missionary, Cris Garcia, who started that mission 20 years prior. We began talking and found that there was a need for medical care in this area of Mexico. So that is how it all got started.

About two years later I returned with a 4 person team and we began seeing people. We worked in a clinic in town from morning until dark. We probably saw around 300 patients in that week. We were hooked at that point and we have been going back every year. I’ve been going since 1997 to Mexico and in 2010 I began going to Haiti as well. So now, in February I take a group to Mexico and in September to Haiti.

DO YOU PREFER ONE MISSION TO THE OTHER? No, not really because they are both so different. They both have their separate challenges.

The Haiti trip is challenging because of the heat. However, both trips energize me because it is a chance to simply be a physician. There is no burden of paper work to deal with and nothing to worry about when seeing a patient. So it is nice to sort of get away from the red tape for a while.

It is amazing how appreciative the people are. They are willing to wait for hours to see you or even for the chance to see you. I really enjoy being able to help with their healthcare needs but also introducing them to the love of Jesus Christ. It is refreshing to see people who are thankful for anything they receive.

HAVE YOU BEEN ANYWHERE ELSE OTHER THAN MEXICO AND HAITI? I haven’t, I was supposed to go to the Philippians after the tsunami with the Christian Medical Dental Association but the trip was cancelled prior to going. I want to go to other places. I have looked into a lot of different trips. The trips can be expensive to go on, so having the funding available can be a challenge. It is something I will be doing in the future though.

IS IT TRUE THAT YOU HELP A MISSION IN MEXICO? Yes, the organization I work through is Bethshean Mexico Mission. I have been on the Board for about seven or eight years now. We have an annual meeting in November. As a board member we help the missionary that heads the organization make decisions and work toward raising funds for the mission. When it comes time to go on the mission I have a part in recruiting people and fund-raising for our trip. It does require some time and effort to organize the trip, but I really enjoy helping the mission organization all I can.

HAVING TRAVELED AND SEEING DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE WORLD, IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT THE PLANET WE LIVE ON WHAT WOULD IT BE? I think if we could eliminate greed we would see a whole different world. There are so many things that greed has a part in, in all areas in life. This is why we see so many people live in poverty. Some people who have money are not willing to give it up or share. There truly are enough resources in this world to go around, but when some people hoard them, it leaves others with nothing and that shouldn’t be the case.

SWITCHING GEARS, TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR FAMILY? I’ve been married since December 1983. I graduated from college one Saturday in December, Christmas was the next Saturday and then we got married the next Saturday which was New Year’s Eve. We now have three children. My daughter is 24 and just

beginning her third year of medical school. I have a son that is 22; he just graduated from Tennessee Tech as a Computer Engineer. Then our youngest son 19; he is attending Tennessee Tech to become a Mechanical Engineer.

They have done very well for themselves.

They have all gone on mission trips with me. My daughter started going when she was about 9 years old and went until she entered college. My oldest son started when he was about 7 and my youngest started when he was 6. They went with me to Mexico many times. The two oldest have traveled quite a bit. My daughter spent 6 weeks in Uganda.

My oldest son has been to Hong Kong, Vietnam, and to India on mission trips. It is great to see my children get out and explore the world all in the name of sharing their faith and helping people.

IF YOU COULD LIVE AND PRACTICE ANYWHERE, WHERE WOULD IT BE? That is a tough question. There are so many places I could live. We have spent some time out in Utah and we really like that! We have been to British Columbia too and that is a great laid-back place to live. If expense were not an issue, I would live in Hawaii. It is beautiful and the weather is always perfect. It is like paradise.

DO YOU THINK THAT BEING A PHYSICIAN IS SOMETHING YOU WILL ALWAYS DO? I believe so. My wife and I have talked about doing missions full time. Right now we are waiting for all of our kids to finish college. We are happy doing what we are doing currently. In a few years though, who knows where life will take us. As far as being a physician though, it is my life calling and I couldn’t imagine doing anything else. So yes, I will be in this line of work as long as I am able.

DO YOU HAVE ANY PERSONAL HOBBIES THAT YOU ENJOY WITH YOUR WIFE? Traveling would probably be our main hobby that we like doing together but are not able to do often enough. We also like hiking on occasion. We’ve hiked many of the local trails over the years. Another activity that I enjoy is cooking. I am an experimental cook, meaning I like inventing recipes when I cook. Usually when I make something I cook “big” – there are always leftovers. Additionally, I enjoy time with my family that is my best hobby!

here was a warm and giving spirit in the air as Mike Quillen, Founder and Former Retired Chairman of Alpha Natural Resources, was the guest speaker of the Friends of Children Event at the Olde Farm. Mike shared experiences from his heart regarding three key people who have made a difference in his life. Many guests and corporate sponsors came out to support the ministry of this 119-year old home supporting youngsters across East TN and southwest Virginia.

For the third year, Barbara Street, Holston Home Board member, along with her husband Jim challenged guests to make their donations to groups who use their funds to improve the quality of life of children. Choose organizations where donations go directly to the children programs.

Last year, Holston Home touched the lives of more than 700 children and youth. By supporting the Friends of Children at Holston Home, the agency can change the lives of even more children.

A closing remark from Jim Street summed up the event: “Service to Humanity and helping others is the best Work of Life.�

by Johnston Memorial Hospital Foundation helped fund services at Mountain States Cancer Care at Johnston Memorial Hospital for radiation oncology patients in our community. The event was held at Woodbrook Farms in Abingdon and featured silent and live auctions, a concert by the Church Sisters, and farm-to-table food provided by local farmers and prepared by Shindigs Catering & Events.

ari’s Heart Foundation is a local 501 (c) 3 charity that helps families of hospitalized children right here in East Tenn. and SW Virginia. Created in 2008 by the Schoondyke family after their daughter, Kari was born with congenital heart disease, KHF has given out hundreds of thousands of dollars in assistance to help hurting families. Most often this assistance helps with gas, meals and hotels but KHF also helps with a myriad of other expenses that come up when families are away from home for months or even years at a time such as rent, mortgage, utilities, emergency home repairs and more. We partner with our local Ronald McDonald House to provide Karing bags (care packages) for every family that stays there.

shley Furniture Home Store hosted an After Hours event on Thursday, June 12.The event was at their Kingsport store location, 2003 N Eastman Rd, Kingsport, TN 37660.

New and old friends were welcomed to come and enjoy the evening mingling with those attending. Guests were encouraged to indulge in some delicious refreshments that had been provided by local Mexican style chain restaurant Salsarita’s. The evening was full of networking and socializing. A. Ask your kids to help plan their lunches. Make it a game.

B. Buy 4-6 clear storage containers or baskets. Label each container with these categories; Veggies, Fruit, Drinks and Snacks or desired choice. Kids will select one item from each container to pack in their lunch.

C. Create a system of rules of what goes into each lunch to avoid conflict.

Select one food item from each of the following 6 categories.

PROTEIN-chicken, tuna, yogurt, cheese, nut butters, beans.

WHOLE GRAIN-whole wheat breads, pitas, bagel rounds, wraps, gluten-free.

FRESH RAW FRUITS-apples, seedless grapes, berries, oranges, bananas.

FRESH RAW VEGETABLES- carrot/celery sticks, bell pepper strips, snow peas,

Cucumber slices, broccoli and cauliflower bites. Leafy salad blends.

SNACK-Greek yogurt, no sugar fruit cups, organic granola bars, trail mix, raisins,

almonds or nuts, occasional cupcake, brownie, cookies, pudding cups, and chips.

DRINK- bottled water, 100% juice boxes, milk-almond, low-fat or chocolate,

un-sweet teas or flavored waters with-out sugar and sugar substitutes.

Eating healthy requires a “lesson plan” of action and is simple as ABC, and 1, 2, 3. There are a lot of possibilities that balance what your children like to eat with what is wholesome and simple for parents and kids to make. Here are a few suggestions.

Don’t worry the containers that hold fresh vegetables and protein should be stored in the refrigerator. However, fresh fruits remain on the counter. Play Show and Tell with your kids, in the grocery store vegetable section, to see which vegetables are cold and room temperature?

MONDAY: peanut butter (almond butter) with honey or all fruit jam.

TUESDAY: drained tuna in a sealed cup, whole grain crackers or bread.

THURSDAY: chicken salad or hard boiled eggs.

FRIDAY: salad greens with veggies and grilled chicken strips.

F. Finally, a few food precautions to keep your kids healthy.

• Wash hands before preparing food with soap and warm water.

• Wash prep areas and containers thoroughly with bleach water.

• Avoid using kitchen sponges for cleaning area.

• Pack anti bacteria sheets in kid’s lunch box.

• Keep cold foods cold with ice packs and hot foods hot with insulated thermos.

• Prep food the night before, or make sure you have pre-packaged food in the containers/bins. Keep foods that need to be refrigerated in the refrigerator. With the container bins on the counter the next morning, kids can select one item from each bin to add to their protein (sandwich).

• Use whole grain breads rather than white bread if you can.

• If you use mayo consider a separate container for this condiment and let kids add it to the sandwich, this is age dependant.

• For younger kids, use cookie cutters to make fun shapes or holiday themes. To keep bread from becoming dry, spread a light coat of butter (not margarine) to each bread slice, then add filling. Wrap cut sandwiches tightly in plastic wrap to remove air pockets.

2. Pipe letters or numbers on graham cookies, set aside to dry.* 3. To make the leaf on the apple-tint 1/4 white royal icing -or butter cream frosting green and using a toothpick, top each red M & M with the frosting.

4. Cut a 2 inch slit on top of the frosted cupcake then insert the chalkboard cookie, position the apple and the chalk (Good & Plenty) as pictured in the photo. * Pipe only on the top 2/3 of cookie. You will be inserting the cookie into the cupcake and you will eliminate the bottom 1/3.

INGREDIENTS ½ cup butter, softened ½ cup sugar ½ cup firmly packed brown sugar ½ cup smooth or crunchy peanut butter 1 egg

Peanut Butter & Jelly Bar Co okies 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 ½ cups all purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda ½ teaspoon baking powder 2 cups peanut butter morsels, divided 1 cup Cherry jam or jelly of choice

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Beat butter at medium speed with an electric mixer until creamy; gradually add sugars, beating well. Add peanut butter, egg and vanilla, mix well.

2. Combine flour, soda, baking powder; gradually add to butter mixture, mix well. Reserve one cup of dough.

3. Stir one cup peanut butter morsels into remaining dough, press into bottom of 9 x 13” pan. Spread jam evenly over the dough.

Crumble reserved dough over jam, and sprinkle with remaining morsels.

4. Bake at 325 for 40 minutes or until golden brown. Cool completely and cut into bars. Cookies may be frozen.

The honey do list – everyone seems to have one tucked away somewhere. As for whether it ever shrinks, that’s where The Honey Do Service, Inc. comes into the picture. ew York Times bestselling author Mary Alice Monroe returned to Kingsport, on Monday, June 23, for a ladies’ literacy coffee. “Monroe at the Mansion,” was part of her book tour for The Summer Wind, which is the second novel in her Lowcountry summer trilogy.

In this novel, Monroe endears readers with human relationships that parallel nature. In what has become true Monroe fashion, doing research, weaving in the message and capturing the hearts of readers, a wild dolphin named “Delphine” creates awareness of perils facing the Atlantic bottlenose dolphin.

The event was held at Allandale Mansion. East Tennessee was very fortunate to have Monroe for a return visit. The ladies’ literacy coffee benefited the Literacy Council of Kingsport, Inc., a ProLiteracy Worldwide affiliate and a member agency of the United Way of Greater Kingsport. The mission of LCK is to provide volunteer tutoring for adults and qualified children to improve their reading and writing skills and to be an advocate for literacy within the greater Kingsport community.

T

he annual Blue Plum Festival is in honor of the 1800’s rural post office serving an area of East Tennessee that is now known as Johnson City. The Friends of Olde Downtowne originally organized the festival in 1999, beginning as a street fair. It has grown considerably over the years to be one of the biggest festivals in East Tennessee.

This year an estimated 80,000 folks walked the streets of downtown Johnson City over the course of the three days to enjoy music, arts, and delicious food.

The festival featured local, regional and national musicians, arts and crafts, urban art, amazing food, and so much more. A crowd favorite is the Blue Hop Brew-Haha, a craft beer festival held on the second day of the event. This year the music line up included bands like Heppy Cats, The Harris Brothers, Great Smokey Mountain Bluegrass Band, and many others. The group of volunteers that host the Blue Plum festival so the most amazing job organizing one of the most fun, free public events in the South!

Emeritus at Remington House recognized the event on June 20th. The Longest Day is a sun up -to-sun down group event honoring the strength, passion and endurance of those facing Alzheimer’s disease. On The Longest Day, it is suggested everyone stay active and busy to complete approximately 12 hours of activity to raise awareness and funds for the care, support, and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association.

Emeritus at Remington House celebrated in true fashion with a day packed with activities starting at sun up with breakfast, Rock Your Socks Off – rocking chair competition, Bingo Bonanza, BBQ Lunch with The Johnny Pafford Band, Pet Parade, Story tellers, and special guest appearance by Bill Snodgrass, representative for Congressman Phil Roe.

Inc, held their annual banquet Thursday, June 7 in downtown Kingsport. Members of the community gathered to support the youth and learn about how they are impacting everyday life in the Greater Kingsport Area. Lt. Governor Ron Ramsey made a guest appearance to get the night started with a live auction, proceeds going back to HO.P.E. After a delicious dinner prepared by Food City, H.O.P.E. students were awarded by Kingsport Mayor Dennis Phillips for their admirable achievements.

The final award was something very special. H.O.P.E. awarded one lucky senior with the first ever Joyce Dockery memorial Scholarship. This scholarship was established in late 2011 in memory of Joyce Dockery who was an active and giving volunteer to the organization. Joyce had a passion for helping young people reach their potential, so when she passed away Founder Stella Robinette thought a scholarship in her name would be the best way to honor her.

ingsport Tomorrow and Meadowview teamed up to host the 9th Annual Kingsport Tomorrow Golf Classic. The best ball tournament is made up of foursomes, beginning with a ‘shotgun’ start which is one foursome at each tee box. The classic is used to raise awareness and funds to support Kingsport Tomorrow’s community projects such as: Veteran’s Memorial Phase 2, Healthy Kingsport & R.E.A.C.H!. This year’s start was delayed shortly for inclement conditions although the wet weather didn’t dampen the fun. Teams enjoyed several challenges as well as opportunities to win prizes on the Par 3’s and long drive areas. Also, players were able to purchase “Mulligans” in order to increase their team’s chances at winning. With thirteen groups continuing after the rain delay, the day was ultimately a great success.

Niswonger Children’s Hospital Golf Classic

C

elebrities and supporters came together on Monday, June 30th to raise money for a very worthy cause and thanks to their generosity, the 2014 Niswonger Children’s Hospital Golf Classic raised about $700,000.

The tournament, played at The Virginian Golf Club and organized by Mountain States Foundation, brought in a host of celebrities, among them NFL greats Peyton Manning, Jason Witten and Dan Marino, NFL head coach Ken Whisenhunt of the Tennessee Titans, pro golfers Corey Pavin and Larry Mize, and college coaching legends Frank Beamer from Virginia Tech, Phil Fulmer from the University of Tennessee and Bruce Pearl, former UT basketball coach who’s the new Auburn head coach.

They gathered to support the children of the region who need specialized medical care. Niswonger Children’s Hospital, located in nearby Johnson City, Tenn., and part of Mountain States Health Alliance, serves more than 200,000 children from a 29-county region covering Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia and reaching into Kentucky and North Carolina. It offers treatment for specialized diseases and health problems that children might otherwise have to travel hundreds of miles to receive.

he Crisis Center Inc. was created 40 years ago by a group of young people concerned about the growing addiction problem. They established a hotline that people in the community could call when in need.

24/7 Crisis Intervention Hotline

Hotline workers hear the most critical, dangerous, and heart wrenching stories from those in our region who call one of several national hotlines: Rape Abuse Incest National Network (1800-656-HOPE), National Hope Line Network (1800-SUICIDE), Suicide Prevention Lifeline 800-273-TALK the Panic Disorder Information Hotline (1800-64-PANIC), and even the Veteran’s Affairs hospitals and 211 call centers route their calls to the Crisis Center Inc.

Just Checking

In addition to the 24/7 hotline, Crisis Center Inc. also provides a popular community outreach program called Just Checking. The Crisis Center team calls enrolled elderly or disabled home bound participants every day to provide citizens with companionship and comfort. The population of people over age 65 is nearly one in five for our region. To sign a loved one up for Just Checking or to make a donation to this unfunded service, call the Crisis Center office at 276-466-2312.

Workforce Solutions

The Crisis Center Inc. is proud to participate in community partnerships with several programs to assist in job skills training opportunities. Volunteers recruited from the Virginia Initiative for Employment not Welfare Program (VIEW) and the Families First program for assistance recipients in Tennessee work up to 30 hours each week to earn benefits. Public housing residents are also required to do community service. Partnering with Experience Works we provide low-income seniors with opportunities to work. Students of various majors from the region’s many colleges and universities also benefit from our internship program.

Community Education

Training for hotline workers is an intensive 40+ hour class that provides the skills necessary for answering those crisis calls. Recruits come from all walks of life and community members are invited to participate in these courses, offered several times a year on varying schedules in order to accommodate as many as possible.

Training to assist with Just Checking calls is shorter and has a very high satisfaction rate with participants. In addition to training interns and volunteers to work the

phones, Crisis Center Inc. has several intensive trainings for the community. We also partner with NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) to provide support and education about people living with a mental health diagnosis.

Sexual Assault

For decades, the Crisis Center has been part of the global movement to bring awareness about interpersonal violence. Some of our annual events include the Clothesline Project, Take Back the Night, the Red Flag Campaign and One Billion Rising. In addition to events that honor survivors, staff and volunteers also provide court and hospital accompaniment to survivors of assault. Suicide Prevention

Suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death for young people ages 15-24 and the 10th leading cause of death in the United States. Some counties of this region have double the national suicide completion rate average. The Suicide Prevention Program at the Crisis Center wants to change the perception of suicide, remove the stigma and raise local public awareness on the issues of suicide, suicide prevention, education and intervention. The Suicide Prevention Program offers trainings to the community to increase awareness of the resources available in our region and suicide awareness skills.

lood Assurance held a business before hours Thursday June 26. Many members of the Johnson City Chamber came out to support the blood bank and some even made donations. Blood Assurance made sure to have a balanced, healthy breakfast for everyone to enjoy. After breakfast, some special prizes were given to a few lucky attendees. Before everyone left for the office, the Blood Assurance staff happily gave tours of their innovative mobile blood banks.

Blood Assurance is a non-profit regional blood center and the network of volunteer blood donors is the major source of blood donations for the Mountain States Health Alliance. The 4th of July is a very special and proud holiday for the residents in the local Tri-Cities. This is a day when our communities come together to celebrate the federal holiday Independence Day, and to remember those who fought for the freedom of America. Every year the Tri-Cities residents enjoy gathering with family and friends to participate in a variety of fun and exciting events around the local communities.

Celebrations of all kind were taking place all over the Tri-Cities bringing the communities together to celebrate.

Bristol held an exciting Independence Day Parade on State Street, while the Cumberland Square Park was filled with fun activities such as a petting zoo, eating contests, food, beverages, and a variety of craft vendors. Fireworks took place that evening near the Cumberland Square Park. Not far away in Abingdon residence were welcomed to the Market Pavilion to listen to the Blackwater Rhythm and Blues Band who performed a variety of music in celebration of Independence Day.

Johnson City residents gathered and celebrated the holiday with an impressive concert held on the soccer fields next to Freedom Hall. Craft and food vendors covered the parking lot alongside the stage. Those attending the celebration had the opportunity to listen to featured artists: Brinley Addington, Jimbo Whaley & Greenbrier, the Twang Bangers and Jon Pardi, who is a rising artist in country music.

Following the performances the community residence gathered for a tribute to all of the U.S. armed forces. At sunset fireworks were shot off ending a wonderful day of celebration.

Kingsport started the holiday off early in the morning with 4 mile Red, White, & BOOM race that was sponsored by Fleet Feet.

Following the race was the Mack Riddle 4th of July Parade. The parade had six professional floats and an exciting performance by local marching bands. Local food vendors such as: Pratt’s Real Pit Barbecue, Beach Hut, Vito’s, Shabby Allie’s, Slammin’ Sammy’s Sandwiches and TK’s Big Dog Hot Dogs began serving food at 5 p.m. that evening for everyone to enjoy.

The 4th of July may only be celebrated once a year, but it’s one holiday we have everyday to be thankful for. The day of celebration is always a great way to bring the communities together to celebrate the freedom of America and to remember those who made it possible. God Bless America.

lthough there was a threat of a rainy afternoon, the clouds parted just in time for the Kingsport Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours at Marker II Grill at Lakeview Marina. On June 24th, members of theKingsport Chamber mingled and enjoyed social networking while delicious food and beverages were prepared and served by the employees of Marker II Grill. Wonderful door-prizes were presented to several lucky winners, while everyone attending relished in the open-air dining area on beautiful Boone Lake.

Marker II Grille is located on Boone Lake, just minutes away from Boone Lake Dam and was the picture-perfect venue for the Chamber’s Business After Hours. he last Thursday in June proved to be a perfect evening for a barbeque.

The Kingsport Chamber of Commerce welcomed many State Legislators to the downtown Farmer’s Market. The Chamber also invited the public to attend and be served by those Legislators. That’s right, the 9th Annual Legislative Barbeque was a chance for the community to get to meet all the big “dawgs” as they were serving up burgers and dogs.

Their names may not be familiar, but their chart-topping hits, which have been recorded by country music greats like Garth Brooks, Trace Adkins, Reba McEntire, George Strait, Faith Hill and Randy Travis will certainly have you tapping your toe and singing along,” says David Matlock, vice president of institutional advancement, about the Richard Leigh Songwriter’s Festival’s performers. “Between them, they have sold more than a billion records.”

That statement held true the last weekend in May as Virginia Highlands Community College hosted on of the best festivals in the region. The festival honors the work of Richard Leigh, a 1973 graduate of Virginia Highlands Community College who earned a Grammy Award for “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue,” a No. 1 hit recorded by country superstar Crystal Gayle. Over the course of his songwriting career, Leigh has been honored with numerous awards from the Country Music Association, the Academy of Country Music and the Nashville Songwriters Association International, and has written dozens of hits for country music’s elite. He was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1994 and was named to the Outstanding Alumni Hall of Fame by the American Association of Community Colleges in 2011.

These talents are raising money for Great Expectations whose needs are particularly pressing at present. The statistics are chilling. Virginia has more than 6,500 children in foster care, more than half of them are teenagers. More than 54 percent of those who have recently aged out of the system are homeless or in an unstable house. VHCC launched its Great Expectations Education Program for Foster Youth in 2008 with the support of a community member who recognized the challenges facing foster youth. Great Expectations is a statewide program of Virginia’s community colleges to help foster youth complete high school, gain access to the community college and transition successfully to living independently. The program continues to grow and continues to make a difference in the lives of Virginia’s foster youth.

he 47th annual Covered Bridge Celebration was held June 11th through the 14th at the Covered Bridge Park in Elizabethton, Tennessee. The historic covered bridge spans the Doe River, providing a picturesque backdrop for this wonderful festival. This year marked the 131st anniversary of the covered bridge.

This historic festival provided something for everyone. This year’s celebration featured live gospel, bluegrass, country and rock performances. Many unique artisans from all over the Appalachian region attended, showcasing their one of a kind wares, from personalized woodworking to jewelry. The food court provided great food and refreshing beverages or all. Children had a blast at the festival too. There was a variety of inflatables and face painting. There was a lot of fun to be had for the young and the young at heart at this year’s Covered Celebration.

he 44 annual Jonesborough Days Festival was held Thursday July the 3rd through Saturday July the 5th. th

Jonesborough Days drew in crowds from throughout the region for their many sights and activities. The streets and park were filled with artisans from the region, displaying their treasures. The parade and firework display were on Friday the 4th. Inside the Jonesborough Visitors Center a model railroad was set-up brought to you by Mountain Empire Model Railroader Club. The Tri-State Antique Power Association had a wonderful tractor exhibit in the parking lot.

The second annual art walk was displayed in the shops throughout the downtown. This year’s annual kick off dinner consisted of a Low Country Shrimp Boil on Thursday evening sponsored by Food City at the International Storytelling Center. Patriotic Stories and songs were presented by the Jonesborough Storytellers Guild at the International Storytelling Center. A beer garden was also set up in the Storytelling Plaza by Jonesborough’s own Depot Street Brewery.

Jonesborough Repertory Theatre presented the 1940’s USO Show all three days. The choo choo train greeted the kids at the entrance and the children’s area had free games, inflatables, cotton candy, and much more. The evening entertainment included concerts on the main stage featuring The Beach Nite Band, Heppy Kats, Trey Hensley and Spirit of Soul Dance Band. Moves on Main was located in front of the Lollipop Shop which included “Goodbye Miss Fourth of July” filmed in downtown Jonesborough.

J

ohn Campbell is a pusher, he pushes everyone around him to be excellent, to think outside the box, and to work tirelessly until the job is done. As Kingsport City Manager, Campbell would do whatever was necessary to get anything accomplished if it meant helping the city.

He preached momentum and how important it was to a community. Campbell knew how hard building momentum could be but he also knew how powerful of a source it was to grow Kingsport.

Jeff Fleming stated, “John is arguably one of the most visionary people I have ever met.” It is no doubt John Campbell was pushing people out of their comfort zones by proposing they do things they never have. He taught his staff how to be leaders, do their homework, and trust their professionalism. Campbell is responsible for creating a

team that is making decisions to propel Kingsport forward.

He has laid the groundwork for a time in the city’s history that will always be remembered.

John Campbell is a sponge for information. He is constantly reading and acquiring new knowledge. His true motivation was to get his team and the people around him thinking and growing every day. He would encourage everyone to think of things such as their competitors, best practices, personal strengths and weaknesses, and opportunities.

John Campbell was a real visionary as Kingsport City Manager, someone who truly moved the needle for the City of Kingsport. His thoughts and ideas will live on through the innovative team he has strived to create. The City of Kingsport will be ever grateful to John Campbell.
