PUBLISHER’S LETTER
F
ebruary is the month of LOVE. Love is a complicated, but beautiful emotion. It is the essence of who we are. Without love, we would not be here. It is this love that has kept us going throughout our lives. It is what drives us to be better human beings. Friendships, intimate relationships, children, even your pets all require love to continue to grow and evolve. Without it, we would fall apart and our lives would feel empty. My life has always been filled with it. If love is so grandious, then why is it so volatile? I am, by no means, an expert on the subject, but what I can say is that we all love differently. If you are curious about how people love, then you must pick up the book (or if that’s too last century for you, just Google it!) about our love languages. According to author Gary Chapman there are five love languages; Words of Affirmation, Acts of Service, Receiving Gifts, Physical Touch, and Quality Time. A lot of times, people think that it is just an intimate relationship that suffers when you are not attune to the love language of the other party involved, but in my experience, it can affect friendships just as much. What I find to be meaningful and important in a relationship may not be the same as someone else. Relationships are hard. They require constant work and nurturing. If you want to know what your love language is, you can take a quiz at 5lovelanguages.com. That brings me full circle to this month’s special feature on weddings. This issue is always so beautiful and heartwarming. I love seeing new love and finding that we can aspire to have a lasting relationship despite our differences. So, sit down, enjoy this love-filled issue of VIPSEEN and love one another like you’ve never loved before. Thank you ALL for the continued love and support you have shown VIPSEEN throughout our many years serving the region. We look forward to an amazing year!

february 2020
Our story began at Providence Academy (PA) in Johnson City, Tennessee. Alex and I definitely started eyeing each other in the school hallways and were pushed into actually talking to each other by mutual friends. We quickly became friends, and in August of 2015, Alex asked me out on our first date to the Appalachian Fair. We started dating in October of 2015, and I graduated from PA in 2016. I moved to Greenville, South Carolina where we did long distance for a year and hated it! I moved back to Johnson City and he graduated high school in 2017. I currently attend East Tennessee State University, and he currently plays collegiate golf for King University. During the spring of 2018, Alex and I got serious about getting engaged. We had been dating for three years, were best friends, and very in love. Fast forward from spring to August and college was about to start back. Alex planned a sweet date to Roan Mountain, Tennessee to enjoy a picnic before we both started back to school. We ate, talked, and went on beautiful walk where he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I, of course, said yes! Our engagement lasted a year and it was honestly a blast planning the wedding. As a little girl, it had always been my dream to get married in a gorgeous church full of friends and family. My mom and I visited Rose Hill Chapel, and it stole our hearts. It was perfect – stone with gorgeous vaulted ceilings, a beautiful rose window and a stunning ballroom right next door for the reception. The most memorable part about wedding planning was how it was a family affair. That year of engagement flew by it seems like: it was truly wonderful. Our wedding day was nothing short of exciting. We got up super early to go decorate the venue, came back to my house where my mom and I hosted all my girls over to get ready for the big day and then we were on our way to take a million pictures and be married! This day was truly one of the best days of our lives and we had special touches everywhere. The garter I was wearing was my mothers and my handkerchief was my great grandmothers. We had a memory table where we had pictures of my grandmother, Linda Beaver, who is in Heaven and was not able to be with us on our wedding day. After Alex and I said our vows, we took part in prayer and communion together which was probably one of the most precious moments for us. This day was truly magical and we could not have imagined it any differently, surrounded by family and friends.

Ben & Chloe Campbell APRIL 13, 2019
Ben and Chloe both graduated from Science Hill High School but did not cross paths as Ben was a football player and Chloe was in the band. Six years later (thanks to some sneaky friends), they officially met at The Label Restuarant during the holidays. After a first date at Main Street Pizza Company, the rest was natural! The couple instantly bonded over appreciation for good food, drinks, and conversation. In 2019, Ben and Chloe exchanged vows at the church Ben grew up in, First United Methodist. After the ceremony, the couple celebrated all night long with friends and family at The King’s Centre, right above the table where they shared their first meal. WHERE WE ARE NOW: Ben is a Project Manager for his father’s construction company with plans of assuming full responsibility soon. Chloe is a communications director and event planner at a local nonprofit. They have two “furry” children, Stella & Asher, and live near downtown Johnson City. They love being in Northeast Tennessee surrounded by family and beautiful mountains. In their spare time, you can find them planning their next vacation, eating downtown, or finding creative ways to give back to the community.

On May 4, 2018, Palmer had just finished finals at Duke Divinity and was celebrating the end of the year with some friends in Raleigh, NC. They ended up at Cornerstone Tavern, where Palmer tried to find a place to get off her tired feet. She and Brent locked eyes, and he smiled at her. When she went to sit next to him, he moved over to sit in a puddle so that she did not get her dress wet. Ever the gentleman, they talked almost two hours before calling it a night.
ceremony. Because Palmer is a United Methodist Pastor, the wedding party was filled with pastors and she choose the Reverends Lauri Jo Cranford and Michael Lester to officiate the service.
About a week later, he took her for a celebratory graduation dinner at Sushi Blues. Palmer told her friends that she did not want to like him, since she already knew that she would be moving to Knoxville. But with his charming smile and caring heart, she could not help but begin to fall for Brent. After realizing that Asheville was the halfway point between Raleigh and Knoxville, they decided to try and see if they could make long distance work. During their first time visiting each other in Asheville in July, they both knew this was it.
Wanting to make the service one that honored the strong women in her family, the couple said their vows while placing their hands on a bible that had been used at her maternal grandmothers and mothers wedding. She also wore the pearls her grandmother had given her before she passed away four weeks before the wedding.
On January 11, 2019, Brent had planned a nice date night. They went to dinner at Maggiano’s in Durham and had made plans to meet one of his friends for an event at Duke. Little did Palmer know, there was no event. Since Duke Chapel was open, maybe Palmer could show Brent the place that was so special to her? As they walked up the center aisle, the clueless Palmer talked about architecture and prattled on about her time at Duke. When they got to the front of the Chapel, Brent took Palmer’s hands and told her how much she meant to him. He got one knee and proposed. While she did say yes, her next words were not, “I love you”, but “you’re a stinker.” As the wedding planning began, Palmer and Brent realized their wedding party was going to be a diverse one, they had people from nine different states as attendants. The couple chose Palmer’s home church, Munsey Memorial United Methodist as the location for the
They chose Carnegie Hotel for the wedding party and the Johnson City Country Club for the reception. The bride’s aunts hosted a bridal luncheon at the hotel on Friday and following a lovely rehearsal dinner catered by the Firehouse Restaurant, members of the bride’s extended family welcomed out of town guests with a casual gathering.
The worship service was one of joyous celebration, with the sister of the groom, Abbey Riem on the piano, long time friends of the bride reading scripture, praying, serving communion and a beautiful version of “The Lord’s Prayer” sung by the bride’s cousin, Mary Emily Yancey. Once arriving at the Johnson City County Club, guests were able to enjoy a wonderful menu prepared by Chef Shonna Peters, a beautiful sunset off the terrace, followed by emotional and insightful toasts by the Best Man Akhil Rachamadugu, Maid of Honor Allee Willcox and Matron of Honor Sarah Jones. The couple chose Signed, Sealed, Delivered as their first dance. The bride’s family are big dancers and DJ Robbie Britton helped ensure that everyone was on the dance floor for hours. In fact, the party went a bit longer than scheduled because everyone was having such a wonderful time. The couple had a wonderful weekend surrounded by family, and friends from far and near and are finally enjoying living in the same zip code and being able to begin their lives together. vipseenmag.com

Blakely Bays and Dustin Ball got married on the seventh day of September after seven years of dating and seven months of being engaged. These two very unlikely people fell in love while attending college at East Tennessee State University. One day while at the workout facility on campus, Dustin came up to Blakely while she was running on the treadmill, but she was quick to brush him off- as she had to finish her workout and get to ETSU Dance Team practice for the next day’s basketball game. The next day, Blakely could not quit thinking about how kind and polite he was, and she had to go back and talk to him and apologize for being so quick to deny a date with him. Ever since that day, they have been inseparable. Dustin is an avid outdoorsman and loves to Hunt and serve his church and community. Blakely is the former Miss Tennessee United States 2016 and co- owner of The Dance Company of Johnson City. They believe that only God could have blessed them with the love they are able to share today. Dustin proposed to Blakely at the Biltmore House in Asheville, NC on New Year’s Eve. Dustin had asked a nearby employee to pose as a member of the Biltmore Marketing team, pretending to ask couples as they came by what their New Year’s Resolutions were. Having no idea, Blakely went along with this and talked about her wishes to slow
down in the new year and appreciate those around her. Dustin then began to talk about how he has spent so many years loving Blakely and his resolution was to make his best friend his wife! She said YES! Their families rushed out from behind bushes and walls, but Blakely’s mom was no where to be found. She quickly realized that her mom had disguised herself as the camera man which included a fake wig and facial hair. It was the most perfect proposal anyone could dream of. For their wedding, they wanted something very romantic and elegant. Every detail was thought out. Their colors were white and gold; accented with greenery. Fresh flowers filled up every room and over 300 candles were lit just in time for the ceremony to begin. The Bride’s family and friends did most of the decorating themselves, including making floral chandeliers, wedding signs, and arches. At the center of all things, Blakely and Dustin wanted their wedding to be an experience to all guests of Jesus Christ. Blakely’s three best friends sang with live instrumentalists to a custom music arrangement of Christian songs: “ You make me Brave” and “Oceans”. They sealed their vows with assembling a unity cross to display in their home of the vows they made before God. They rode off into the night after much fun, dancing, and laughter in “Uncle Louie’s” bright red vintage care and enjoyed seven days on their honeymoon in beautiful St. Lucia. vipseenmag.com

february 2020
The forecast for my wedding day was basically calling for a hurricane. The skies were dark, tree limbs were falling from the sky and all of my table decorations were blowing onto the ground. Typically, this would be a bride’s worst nightmare but for me it was quite the opposite. The weather wasn’t a concern because I have always heard that rain on your wedding day was good luck. So from the look of things we were going to have a spectacular life together. I have always been a fan of irony. We pre-selected the Beatles classic “Here Comes the Sun” as one of our walk down songs. This song represented God’s answered prayer of finding our one true love and soul mate. Little did we know it would represent the weather of the day as well. As I walked down the aisle to my future, holding my dad’s arm, God showed up and brought the warmest sun with him. Our goal for our wedding was simple elegance and the primary focus being Eric and myself. We wanted to be surrounded by those who love us the most and who we share day to day life with. The wedding officiant was our dear friend, Dan Flatcher. Our bridesmaids were Holly Fox, Jurnee Carr, and Hope Everhart. Junior Bridesmaids were Addy and Lilly Higginbotham. Flower girl was Rhylee Hinkle. Groomsmen were Andrew Xixis, Tim Fox, and Bryan Pearson. We got married on a Sunday afternoon at the Millstone in Limestone Tennessee on April 14th, 2019. Our guests enjoyed the catering of Braeden’s BBQ of Kingsport, TN. The menu consisted of orange glazed pork loin, grilled chicken breast, macaroni & cheese, and slaw. Our cake was the classic pink almond from Black Bird Bakery in Bristol, TN. The details of our wedding day were very personalized and thought out. Our photographer, Tara Hodges photography, did a wonderful job of capturing every detail. I had a gown type in mind and wanted to look different from every other gown I have ever worn. I wanted Princess Dianna to meet Stevie Nicks and Annie’s room of Kingsport helped me do just that and at an affordable price. I chose an intricate lace fit and flare gown by Stella York, accented with vintage poet sleeves. I have never been a fan of veils, so naturally I picked the longest one in the store. The groom wore a classic tailored fit grey suit from Men’s Warehouse. The bridesmaids wore a classic navy blue dress from Belk made my Chaus and the groomsmen sported a vintage look of a white button up, suspenders, and navy blue pants. The Junior Bridesmaids and flower girl wore an ivory, drop waist, bellsleeve Ralph Lauren dress. The men’s boutonnieres and ladies bouquets represented old southern classic favorites of cotton and fresh magnolia leaves. Supplies gathered from Hobby Lobby and mamaw’s magnolia tree in her front yard for construction of homemade arrangements. Fresh flowers were supplied by Food City Floral. Linens and decorations were rented from Celebrate Rentals. My wedding day has been one of the greatest days of my life but being married to the man God created for me and sharing everyday life with him is one of my greatest blessings.

Jacob & Sarah Colvin MARCH 9, 2019
Sarah and Jacob met in high school, but they didn’t start dating until they reconnected after college and then the fun began. It was quickly apparent that they were both quite smitten with each other. After a little over a year, Jacob decided to propose. He wanted everything to be perfect and it turned out beautifully. It was a warm summer day, with friends planted throughout Kings Common to record the momentous occasion of his proposal. He popped the question near the Johnson City sign downtown, where of course, Sarah said “Yes”! The day wasn’t over just yet. Jacob had planned a secret engagement party to close out a perfect day. They are both Johnson city natives, so it was fitting that they had their ceremony close to home in Gray, TN where they could share their special day with family and friends. They are currently living in Fort Hood, Texas where Jacob is stationed as an Infantry officer in the Army. They share a love of good food, good beer, and all things fitness.

Upon meeting at 14 years old, Seth and I built a friendship over the next 5 years. We began dating during our freshman year in college, where the majority of our relationship developed over long-distance, as I pursued a Biology Degree at Milligan College and Seth pursued a Mechanical Engineering degree at the University of Tennessee. Despite the distance, Seth proposed 3 years later in November 2018 and we were married on June 15, 2019. Our wedding day was a culmination of our relationship, filled with humor, compassion, and adoration. Seth and I credit much of our relationship to my brother, Tanner, who was always looking for ways to bring Seth and me together. Therefore, it was only necessary that Tanner have his own role on our wedding day. Instead of a traditional first look with the bride and groom, Tanner willingly wore a white dress and blonde wig to surprise Seth during a hilarious and confusing first look. It was indeed a difficult act to follow, but I am sure Seth was relieved when I finally came around the corner for the real first look. Through all the excitement, Seth realized that he forgot my wedding ring at his house. Thankfully, Seth’s mother willingly brought the ring to the venue in time. I also had the opportunity to do a first look with my father before the ceremony, which was one of the most emotional events of our big day. Through the laughter and love, our wedding day was shared with our closest friends and family, who have provided support and encouragement throughout our relationship. When planning our wedding, Seth and I both agreed on one thing: we wanted our wedding to be an illustration of Christ’s love for His people. With the help of those around us, we were able to incorporate a foot-washing ceremony, prayer, and worship song led by one of the groomsmen during our ceremony. What a wonderful gift it is to come together as one in worship! The rest of the evening progressed in celebration with our loved ones. Our reception included moving speeches from friends and family as well as some hardcore partying on the dance floor! Seth and I pray that our marriage continues to find its purpose in Christ. We decided to come together in marriage as one because we know that we can better glorify God together than we can apart. Seth and I are excited to love each other as Christ has loved us for the rest of our lives.

The weather was beautiful and it was an early September day in the mountains of Wise, VA when Josh and Megan first met. She was finishing up Volleyball practice, and Josh was coming back from working out when they came across each other in the parking lot. A friendship was started right then, and they would continue to grow and get to know each other in the following years. Fast forward a few years and college was almost over for the two. Their friendship however, had evolved into something special and meaningful, with a genuine love for each other. They spent a lot of time together in Wise, and after Megan spent a semester in Thailand, Josh knew he needed to step up and ask her out, and they started dating upon her return. They are happy to be getting settled in Knoxville Tennessee, and are looking forward to their next chapter in life.

In January of 2016, I (Kourtney) was a sophomore in college at the University of Oklahoma, and decided to take an 8-month internship at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Tennessee in the Chemical Sciences Division. I was in a group with several other people, one of which was Wesley. Wes had already graduated from Emory and Henry College and worked with Eastman Chemical Company before starting work at ORNL in the fall of 2015. The whole group ended up becoming really good friends, and spent a lot of time together outside of work in downtown Knoxville and exploring the many activities that Northeast Tennessee has to offer. One weekend the group planned a hiking trip to visit some nearby waterfalls just outside Oak Ridge and at the last second everyone backed out except for me and Wes. We ended up going on the trip together and spent the time hiking learning more about each other. Without meaning to, we both found feelings for one another at the end of the hike. Soon after that, we went on our first date where Wes asked me to be his girlfriend at the top of the Sunsphere in downtown Knoxville. Wes had been accepted to begin his Ph.D at Texas A&M in the fall of 2016, so we wanted to go on as many adventures as we could before we went back to Oklahoma and before he moved to Texas. We went on weekend backpacking adventures, rock climbing, kayaking and traveled to as many new restaurants as possible. Once our internships ended, we began a year and a half of being six hours apart. Wes and I made it a priority to see each other every 2-3 weeks, usually trying new food places (we’re suckers for some good Texas BBQ) or seeing new towns around College Station. In the meantime, I had been finishing up my degree and ended up finding a fantastic advisor at Texas A&M to begin my Ph.D work there also. WHERE WE ARE TODAY: Now that we are both here in College Station working on our doctoral degrees, we have started creating a wonderful life together. We have three fur babies (Annie, Atlas, and Ash) that rule the house and want all of your attention and love. Following our doctoral studies we hope to find ourselves back in the area surrounding Northeast Tennessee that has a special place in our hearts.

THE WIT BIT
Beth is a wife to Stephen, mother of 2 boys, and business owner who is passionate about Jesus. She likes the color orange, good grammar, and junk food; she detests misspelled words, laziness, and mouth noises of all kinds. She is also passionate about helping people create residual income by working part time from home.
Valentine’s Day Lessons Valentine’s Day might be something quite commercialized in the modern era, but it has its humble origins in the Roman festival of Lupercalia. The festival, held in mid-February, celebrated the coming of spring and included fertility rites and the pairing of women with men. The Lupercalia festival was officially replaced with St. Valentine’s Day in the 5th century. Formal messages started appearing in the 1500s and by the 1700s commerically printed cards were being used. That brings us to today. Hallmark and Victoria’s Secret are the REAL winners on Valentine’s Day. Hallmark has convinced us that the only way to tell our significant other how we really feel about him/ her is to pay $7.99 for a card written by a complete stranger. As for Victoria, I think we all know her “Secret”…. unless you’re a size 2 or less, the only things in her store that will fit you are lotion and cologne. Men, Valentine’s Day has come on the same date every year since the Middle Ages, yet at 6:00 pm each February 14th every card aisle in every retail establishment in America is filled with men who apparently had no clue Valentine’s Day would come around again so quickly. Therefore, all cards and gifts must be bought prior to February 14th, or if you’re smart, the day after when everything is on sale. Ladies, in order to ensure that your significant other exceeds your expectations, please throw out any and all expectations prior to February 14th. Also, I don’t care how much she says she loves flowers, do NOT give her cut flowers as a symbol of your growing love. Those flowers will be dead and floating in smelly, rotten water within 2 weeks and is that really how you want your relationship to go down?
If you’re single, for the love of all that is holy, please do not post on social media about how much you hate Valentine’s Day and/or the opposite sex, because frankly, everyone else is sick of your whining and we all know your hate stems from being alone again on Valentine’s Day. When you’re single, not having to stress over what to buy someone for Valentine’s Day IS a gift. Embrace it and be thankful. As a sidenote, single women, please do not post selfies with your cats on Valentine’s Day. Crazy cat lady selfies with captions like “Best Valentine Date Ever” don’t help your case. Don’t fuel the stereotype. Besides, it’s just not safe, because nothing says “I’m at home alone cruising the internet for a date” like selfies taken with our cats. There are mentally unstable men who are also perusing the internet for dates on Valentine’s Day, so if you don’t want to end up with a man who wears a house arrest ankle bracelet as a Valentine’s date for next year, stay off the internet on Valentine’s Day. So, while all of you are celebrating the faux holiday of Valentine’s Day this year, my husband and I will be planning for OUR favorite holiday, February 15th, which is “National All the Red Foil Wrapped Candy is Half Off Day”.
Happy Valentine’s Day Ya’ll!!

Holiday Loft Tours EVENT COVERED BY LINDA COFFEY
Downtown Kingsport is full of surprises with some places being developed into unique and amazing homes for residents. Several older buildings have been re-purposed, and a few new buildings have been raised to provide downtown living opportunities. On Sunday, December 8th, Downtown Kingsport Association held its annual loft tours. After checking in at Blue Ridge Properties office, ticket holders had the opportunity to follow the map and visit residents in their homes. Each home had refreshments to offer and one even had a special guest to greet the crowds: Santa!
BEVERLEY AND JOHN PERDUE
Driving through downtown, one would never imagine that beautiful living spaces are often located over shops and restaurants. Several residences had rooftop living spaces with views of Bays Mountain and prime viewing spots for downtown activities. One unique stop on the tour was a building that was once a telephone building. Chip and Angie Millican greeted guests and shared their plans of renovation of the building. As guests signed the walls, it was impressive how something new can be developed that incorporates the history of the city.

Six of the downtown Kingsport churches hosted a very special Open House on Sunday, December 8th. Churches participating included: First Broad Street United Methodist Church, First Christian Church, First Presbyterian Church, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, First Baptist Church, and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Each sanctuary was decorated and guests enjoyed self-guided tours. During the event, each church provided music, which ranged from singing youth groups to the beautiful sounds of the harp. Many people took advantage of the beautiful weather to walk between the churches, but vans and buses were also operating to provide transportation. Refreshments were offered at each location and reflected the joy of the season. The event was a reminder of the importance of Church Circle in the planning of Kingsport. Neighbors enjoyed visiting and greeting each other with the signs of the season.

HOPE Open House EVENT COVERED BY CRYSTAL DAWN CARTER
When fire took out their space last year some organizations would have been on the brink of disaster, but for HOPE (Helping Our Potential Evolve) it was motivation to become more. The organization had a chance to show their growth when they held a Christmas open house at their new home at 618 Watauga Street in Kingsport. They welcomed media, community leaders, and any person interested in seeing their new space and learning about their mission. HOPE BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND STAFF
Miss Stella Robinette, her staff, and volunteers were beaming at the new space for the youth they work with to give them opportunities for their future. They also kept the same rules they do with the kids they serve, each delicious dish served was a healthy meal in keeping with their partnership with Healthier Kingsport. Even with an open house, HOPE does not slack on their mission. Volunteers and HOPE members were in one of the rooms putting together gifts to be taken to local nursing care facilities for the residents. They are learning to give back to their community; one of the primary things Miss Stella and her staff teaches.

Hundreds jumped onboard the Miracle Express at the 2019 Night of Hope and Miracles! The event, held on December 6, at MeadowView Conference Resort & Convention Center, helped to put everyone in the Christmas spirit with the festive décor. Every once in a while, the whistle would blow, and the steam would rise as the train prepared to head North; reminding everyone of the miracles happening every day at Niswonger’s Children Hospital. Tom Tull, the conductor for the evening, made sure everything happened on time, according to his pocket watch. Silent auction items were available for bidding, and Tull reminded the crowd to bid high – since the money helps children and their families.
Proceeds from the event will benefit Niswonger Children’s Hospital, giving local babies and children access to lifesaving treatment, care, and technology, as well as support and partnerships for healthy lives and brighter futures. Ballad Health Foundation believes that all children are miracles and held a celebration on Saturday, December 7th. The free event was held at Marriott MeadowView Conference Resort & Convention Center. MeadowView was transformed for the Night of Hope and Miracles on Friday night, and Ballad wanted the community to have the opportunity to come and experience the beautiful setting on Saturday. Activities were planned to promote healthy lifestyles. Plenty of action-packed fun was underway as children danced to the Santa Shuffle, hula-hooped, played games, and participated in many other fun events. The photo booth was a popular place as children and their families dressed up and posed for the camera. Of course, the best photos were the ones with Santa Claus!
KAREN SCHETZINA, DAVID TAYLOR, AND PARIS YAMEK
Train conductor, Tom Tull, was keeping everything on time as children went from station to station to get their passports stamped. When the passports were complete, each child received a free book. Junior League Kingsport Jingle and Gingerbread EVENT COVERED BY CRYSTAL DAWN CARTER
Creative gingerbread houses, pictures with Santa Claus, and a chance to buy some products from local vendors. Kingsport Junior League presented their “Jingle and Gingerbread” event at the Model City Event Center in Kingsport, Tennessee on December 5th. The event featured many local vendors with their wares on display just in time for some Christmas shopping. From homemade soaps and candles to many of our favorite cosmetic sensations; this event had it all. The event also featured wonderful snacks to enjoy while providing all the tools needed to construct the perfect gingerbread creation. The houses were then put on display online for a vote. It was also a chance to meet several of the newest members of the Kingsport Junior League and to find out about their amazing project of bringing warm blankets to those that need them most. The ladies doing their premiere project will make the blankets by hand and deliver them to some of the areas most needed in Kingsport.

Intercity Ballet of Kingsport Tea with the Sugar Plum Fairy EVENT COVERED BY LINDA COFFEY
The Intercity Ballet hosted a tea with the Sugar Plum Fairy on Saturday, December 7th, at the Model City Event Center. Guests dressed up in their finest as they gathered with their friends to watch the members of the ballet company perform selections from The Nutcracker Ballet. Barry Brickey narrated the story as dancers performed to the delight of the young guests. After the performance, there were opportunities to take photos with the characters. As a party favor, each attendee had a craft kit to make a frame for a special photo.
KAYDENCE
Plates of Christmas goodies were served after the performance, and you could hear the girls talking about which character they wanted to dance when they were older. 2019 marks the fortieth year for the Intercity Ballet’s presentation of “The Nutcracker”. In addition to the public performances, two free school performances are presented at the Toy F. Reid Employee Center. Kingsport Lifesaving Crew Christmas Event EVENT COVERED BY CRYSTAL DAWN CARTER
Kingsport Lifesaving Crew has been looking out for the area for years. The group is not paid for their work, but that doesn’t stop them from always wanting to lend a helping hand. These volunteers love helping so much that they donate money out of their own pockets all throughout the year so that they can buy Christmas presents for some very special children. On December 15, 2019 the KLC got to meet and hold a Christmas party for the children and their families got to celebrate with the lifesaving crew, hear the Christmas story being read, and leave with lots of cool presents and a new Bible. The children were selected by a local elementary school principal and are based on need. The volunteers say the split the lists and each person buys gifts so that everyone is included in this endeavor. There was even Christmas cake provided by Food City. *VIPSEEN Magazine is very enlightened on the sensitive nature of publicizing photos of children in need receiving their holiday gifts. We hope you enjoy the photos of all the hardworking people that gathered together to make this possible.

To begin, pop-up shops allowed you the ability to immerse yourself into a market of artisan products, handmade goods, and curated artwork, which all looked amazing. The goods were made available for purchase and the shops were open to the public and free to attend. The main event, following the pop-up shops, was set up SharkTank-style. Startups and entrepreneurs took their chance to pitch their ideas in front of a panel of judges to compete for a cash prize. Immediately following the pitches, was a black-tie gala where guests are invited to indulge in a night of celebration. The night included handmade bites, signature cocktails, a DJ, and dancing. The MADE Gala premiered in 2019, highlighting makers, artists, designers & entrepreneurs. For more information, please visit www.themadegala.com

Kingsport held their annual Christmas parade on the evening of December 7th. Large crowds attended the parade, which included floats that were all aglow. There were grinches, floats, bands, and a variety of participants on the oneand-a-half-mile route through downtown. This is the third year since the Christmas parade was revamped. It was changed to a night event, but organizers said despite changes, one thing remains the same: There is only one Santa in the Kingsport parade and he is ushered through the parade by Kingsport Fire Department. HearStrong Foundation Champions EVENT COVERED BY CASEY KEELEY
On Friday, January 10, 2020, the HearStrong foundation sought to recognize four young people local to the Tri-Cities who have suffered from hearing loss and regained the sense by receiving cochlear implants. Hosted at the Carnegie hotel and officiated by Shannon Ball, director and co-founder of Waiting to Hear, the “HearStrong Champions” were awarded with a plaque, a medal, and a T-shirt to recognize the obstacles they have overcome regarding their loss of hearing. After Sarah Ball lost her hearing at age two, her parents founded Waiting to Hear, an organization that has created programs to increase awareness of cochlear implants. This was only the beginning of the road for the family, as her mother, Sherry, was diagnosed with hearing loss earlier in 2019. All proceeds from the programs go toward the funding of more programs that benefit the hard of hearing youth in the region. Less than 7% of those who can benefit from cochlear implants actually receive them. The medical devices are surgically implanted to stimulate the auditory nerve directly. In this way they are different from hearing aids, which serve to amplify sound without a surgical procedure. In addition to the other awards, the champions Reece Townsend, Anna Blake, Sarah Ball, and Hanna Brewer will be gifting the person of their choice with cochlear implants. Now nine years old, Sarah Ball chose her mother Sherry to be the recipient of the gift.

COOL AND SERENE
Rooms to Desire & Inspire STORY BY DAVID MALLORY AND TODD FIELDS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MIKE HENSLEY, JOHNSON CITY AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY
Interior design is a part of our everyday life. Much like the fashion industry, interior design is woven into our lives, sometimes without us being aware of it. The color palettes and textures are constantly evolving. Clothing is the most apparent way that we express our individuality to the public. It tells onlookers a bit about our personality and our lifestyle. Our choice of fashion is something that the general public can see. When you get dressed in the morning, your outfit can reveal a lot about not only your personality, but also your current mood. Your home however, is a more consistent reflection of you... or at least it should be.
How you design your home is a more intimate way of expressing who you are. It is only seen by a select few....a small circle of family and friends. The way we choose to design our homes is the ultimate expression of who you are. Your home is where you are most comfortable. Unlike clothing, there are no public “expectations. It is all about creating a space that makes you feel happy and content. Do you enjoy soft luxurious fabrics and crystal chandeliers? Or are you more of a laid back Boho person? Are you drawn to traditional furnishings or do you lean more toward contemporary design? Defining your style can be a daunting task... sometimes you need inspiration. This months editorial will show you several different vipseenmag.com

CLASSICAL NEUTRALS spaces that we have designed over the years. Perhaps you will find your inspiration!
Classical neutrals...
Timeless design is tricky to define, largely because people’s sense of timelessness depends on the time frame they reference. As we all know, design sometimes takes a sharp, counterculture turn. Perfection in design is elusive and ever evolving—always borrowing from the past while pushing toward the future. This luxurious home, built in the French chateau style, has large rooms with soaring 20 foot ceilings. The homeowners looked to us to create an environment that felt timeless. In cases like this, typically we opt for clean, neutral paint colors to imbue the spaces with a sense of calm and comfort. Having a versatile, neutral color also creates the opportunity for the furniture, art, textiles and accessories to lend a polished quality to the dwelling. Rooms with a large volume of the space, can feel cold and impersonal . However, by creating several seating areas, installing large drapery, using soft comfortable fabrics, and layering in lots of art and accessories, this home was made to feel cozy and approachable. The perfect place to welcome family and friends!

Cool and serene...
When we begin a new design project, we start by choosing a color palette. The jumping off point is usually a combination of things— the mood the client would like to evoke, their favorite colors and usually an important textile. We love to move toward creating tranquil spaces in the home—for example this serene guest bedroom, that we designed for one of our clients. We fell in love with the soft blue wallpaper and wrapped the entire room in it. This made the space feel clean and cool...taking on an almost cloud-like feel. We kept the bedding simple. Unique mirrored back chairs added a touch of glamour. A large gilt wood mirror above a bedside writing desk is a nice balance to the asymmetric roofline. Guest rooms are notoriously neglected when it comes to decor, but not in this home. Overnight guests are welcomed by a well

appointed room. A quiet retreat which makes them feel that they are valued guests of the home.
Modern Spin on the Downstairs Den...
When first visiting this home, we were told that they wanted to make the downstairs den a nice place for the family to hang out and watch TV. But they still wanted it to be stylish. Encouraging them to purchase quality furnishings. “Choose Well—Not Often”, is the philosophy that we try to instill in our clients. Sofas are designed for comfort and are intended to be used. This is a very active family, with teenagers, grown children, small grandchildren, and pets. We selected fabrics that were luxurious-to-the-touch, yet dog-friendly and stain-resistant. As hard as it is to believe, you could spill red wine on the sofa, and clean it with common household cleaners.
CLASSICAL NEUTRALS
A combination of greys, silvers and golds allowed for a modern mix of materials and styles to create a space that is sophisticated enough for Mom and Dad, but still cool enough for the younger members of the family!

Kids Making a Difference STORY BY ANGELICA ARES
VIPSEEN is proud to introduce our exclusive new feature, VIPkids! We will feature kids in our region that are making a difference in their communities. We hope to spark inspiration in young leaders and instill a sense of pride and passion for giving back. Volunteerism, service, and entrepreneurship are at the heart of VIPSEEN and we believe that we should start that dedication at a young age. The first featurettes in VIPkids are young pageant contestants that are making a difference in their community by raising money and donations for local causes. Individual contestants do a lot on their own; Emmalyn Garmer, 2 years old, is Baby Miss Tennessee Festivals 2019. She collected items over winter break to donate to the Unicoi County Animal Shelter. Sophie Colinger, 8 years old, is Little Miss Christmas Festivals Grand Supreme 2019, donated pet food to the Washington County Animal Shelter during Christmas break. Seven-year-old Piper Sharp, Little Miss Tri-Cities Festivals 2019, volunteered at the Miss Shining Star pageant. Miss Shining Star is an annual pageant in Knoxville that offers free entry to children with special needs. Also, Jenni Boardwine, 14, donated food items to area homeless shelters in November and December as Miss Tri-Cities Festivals 2019. Contestants also work together to make a difference. Contestants of the Miss Christmas Festivals 2019 pageant donated over 1,200 sweatshirts, hoodies, gloves and hats to Hunger First in Kingsport, TN. Four-year-old cousins Stokley Rowlands, Toddler Miss Southeast U.S. 2019, and Kynslie Overstreet, Mini Miss Southeast U.S. 2019, delivered Christmas stockings and backpacks filled with toys, candy, and hygiene items to the Greeneville Department of Child Services to be delivered during the Christmas Season to children coming into foster care.

Johnson City Christmas Parade EVENT COVERED BY CRYSTAL DAWN CARTER
It was a celebration of the past, present, and future for Johnson City when they held their annual Christmas parade on December 7th. The event began around 10:30 as marching bands, JROTC, churches, and area businesses competed for honors with their themed floats. The theme was to pay homage to Johnson City’s Sesquicentennial held throughout this past year with various events in the city.
JOHNSON CITY POLICE LEADING THE WAY
Children were all crowded along the curbs to catch a piece or two of candy as the parade passed. They got a glimpse of old fire trucks and police cars that served long ago.

The Heart Goes On New Year’s Eve Ball EVENT COVERED BY CODY WOODS
This year, I rang in the New Year at the Titanic-themed New Year’s Eve Ball benefiting Kari’s Heart Foundation. We enjoyed an amazing dinner, fun dancing, a live band, and even a silent auction! When the doors opened, I was thrusted back in time as if I had just boarded the Titanic. The silent auction featured many unique items as well as a few great deals. The Johnson City Hit Men kicked off the show at 9:30 and kept us going until the ball dropped. Kari’s Heart Foundation (KHF) goal is to help families of hospitalized children. They support families in Northeast Tennessee, Southwest Virginia, Western North Carolina, and the area around Moline, Illinois. KHF aims to provide for these families in any way that they are able— mainly through travel and miscellaneous expenses, and community support. If you are interested in joining the KHF family, consider serving the community by becoming a monthly donor. Help KHF rise up to meet the enormous need which lies just in our backyards.

The young women, each obviously on a path to an amazing future, offered their insights. One thing they all agreed upon was to create more opportunities for activities that families could do together in the city. Jody Dutcher of Electro-Mechanical Corporation, as well as the 2019 Chair of the Board, presented the awards.

It was a colorful way to raise money for the Imagination Library of Sullivan County at Brushstrokes for Books. The November 2nd event was held at Bristol Motor Speedway. Three different artists were available to walk guests through the process of making one of three available paintings. A landscape piece, a llama, or a sunflower. While they painted a masterpiece, guests could munch on mounds of delectable goodies or browse through the many silent auction items. A great selection of musicians shared their talents for the event. The family friendly event supports the efforts of Sullivan County Imagination Library provide over seven thousand books each month to children from birth to five-years-old. Over $8,000 was raised to provide high quality age-appropriate books for preschoolers in Sullivan County.

STORY BY CRYSTAL DAWN CARTER PHOTOS BY CRYSTAL DAWN CARTER & HILL PHOTOGRAPHY
The air was cold and incredibly crisp on January 20th on State Street in Bristol. The cold didn’t keep people from coming out to honor Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his legacy at the 3rd Annual Martin Luther King Day walk and program sponsored by YWCA NETN and SWVA, Bristol Train Station, and Appalachian Peace Education Center (APEC). In the past two years, the walk had community members start their journey from each state. One group left Virginia from a church and in Tennessee they left from a local organization to meet at the intersection of State Street and MLK Boulevard before walking to the famous Bristol sign. This year participants were welcomed into the Paramount Theater on State Street where they were kept warm and happy with hot beverages and cookies. While enjoying the warmth and hospitality, guests had the opportunity to see prize-winning artwork from Bristol TN and VA High Schools and a “Freedom Quilt” project from Bristol, VA elementary schools. This year local high school students were encouraged to create artwork that represented the MLK theme, “The Legacy Lives.” Cash prizes were awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners. The prize winning artwork is currently on display during Black History Month at the YWCA NETN and SWVA in Bristol. Those walking were provided with song sheets containing songs that were related to the Civil Rights Movement. Many held signs, some held hands in a beautiful symbol of unity as they walked up State Street to the Bristol sign. Volunteers and planning committee members for this year’s event were adorned in yellow scarves. Walkers stopped on MLK Boulevard for Kimberly Pete to belt out a song. Her octave range shattered the cold and silence and impacted each participant in some way. Everyone then gathered under the iconic Bristol sign for a photo and proceeded to the Bristol Train Station for a community program focused on “Beloved Community.”
