PUBLISHER’S LETTER

In

the eight years I have been publishing this magazine, I have never experienced a more emotional response to a cover and cover story than I did when I made the decision to feature the CEO of Ballad Health this past June. To put it mildly, I was both saddened and disappointed in some of the vile, hateful comments made by some of the people in our community. I truly feel that we are each entitled to an opinion and that even a good debate can create healthy, productive dialog, but sadly, a majority of the negative comments we encountered were full of hate, anger, foul language and name calling. How can anyone expect to be taken seriously when they are using bullish tactics and threats just because I don’t think like they do? At that time, I considered making a public statement in response to this behavior and the outlandish assumptions being made, however, decided to wait - because I honestly didn’t believe it would make a difference. Now that a little time has passed, I do want to clear a few things up that have been bothering me. I have many thoughts and comments in regard to this matter and I think the best way to share them is to simply list them, so, in no particular order, here are a few:

1. First and foremost: Ballad Health nor anyone else, paid VIPSEEN to do a “PR” piece on Alan Levine and place his family the cover. They did not seek out VIPSEEN for any attention in regard to their CEO. I, Angela Baker, WANTED to do this feature and I am very proud of how it turned out. Why? Because I get it. As a small business owner …I get it. He came to this region with mission impossible as his task: To SAVE this region’s healthcare… which at the time, was suffering financially (both groups) and was at risk of being bought out by an outside, larger hospital group, which would have led to the likely closure of rural hospitals and extensive job loss. I admire the intestinal fortitude that Mr. Levine has displayed time and time again to do what is best for this region – even though he knew it meant harsh criticism and personal attacks would come his way. 2. I am always confused when someone states that Mr. Levine is trying to destroy the healthcare in our region. This makes zero sense to me. First, do you think he is acting alone in the decisions being made around our region? He has a board; each person on that board has a vote. The board collectively makes decisions. This is not a dictatorship; contrary to what some would lead you to believe. From my viewpoint, I think they (Ballad Health) are doing all that they can do to save our healthcare. Yes, that may mean costs increase and services get consolidated… but why did we have so much duplication of services in the first place? I certainly don’t know all the details, but I have enough common sense to know that no business can operate in the negative forever. 3. It amazes me how little attention has been given to the news that Ballad Health is opening a Pediatric ER in both Bristol and Kingsport… one staffed by Pediatric ER doctors and nurses who are trained specifically to care for our little ones. As a mother of a toddler, THIS is great news. 4. Lastly, why are we fighting against each other? At the end of the day I am thankful that my Level 1 Trauma Center is only 25 minutes away. 5. When I lived in Jackson, my Level 1 Trauma Center was over an hour away. Whoever is responsible for this childlike, keeping up with the Jones’, competition between cities, should be put in time-out. Let’s just chalk this up to “first-world problems”. I truly love our community and have huge respect for all of those pushing forward to make our region a better place to live. If you truly want your healthcare concerns to be heard, then I suggest trying a respectable approach that involves healthy dialog.

This is not another cream, scrub or massage. It’s a proven process. Backed by science.

Case #3

LESS INHIBITION. MORE YOU.

That's the power of Cryoskin. Increased collagen production. Less fine lines and wrinkles. Cellulite disappears. Inches are gone.

YOUR QUESTIONS, ANSWERED What is Cryoskin? Cryoskin is a non-invasive session used for slimming, cellulite reduction, and toning. How does it work? The session lasts for 28 minutes and is done manually through a massage technique. The session begins with heat and then a decrease in temperature to -8° for the duration of the session.

Is it safe? Cryoskin is very safe and non-invasive. Many guests visit us during their lunch break or immediately before or after a workout with no down-time after the treatment. When will I see results? The first results are generally visible from the first session and often very encouraging. However, it should be noted that the best results appear from

15 days to 3 weeks after the first session and extend for several months afterwards. How long will results last? Depending on the individual and on their lifestyle and diet, results can last several months to several years. It is recommended to have 2 or 3 sessions approx 6 months after the end of the initial set of sessions to maintain results.

DR. BRENT

Baker

Born and raised in the beautiful foothills of East Tennessee, Dr. Brent Baker knows the area and community as well as anyone. Dr. Baker graduated from Central High School before attending King College for his undergraduate degree. Following King College, Dr. Baker went on to medical school at ETSU Quillen College of Medicine before his journey took him to ETSU Bristol Family Medicine Residency Program to learn Family Medicine. With his family owning a farm in Mendota, VA, Dr. Baker has deep roots to the region and enjoys experiencing them in many ways, especially by mountain bike. Dr. Baker knows the area, he knows the people, and he absolutely loves his home here. On August 1st, Dr. Baker started with Mountain Region Family Medicine; he found it to be an excellent opportunity. The office Dr. Baker works out of is on the second floor of The Press Building, one of four Mountain Region Family Medicine offices in the TriCities. This particular practice is family oriented and centers around family medicine. Those who are seen here range from pediatrics to adulthood. There is also a wide range of needs that are met within Mountain Region Family Medicine such as; diabetes management, chronic health conditions, women’s health concerns, and sports injuries. In addition, some of the specialties Dr. Baker and the facility offer are; joint injections, general diagnostic X-ray, DEXA scans, ultrasound (to include cardiac & vascular and laboratory studies): all of which are done in office. Because of this, Mountain Region Family Medicine, provides a one stop shop for its patients.

Being independent and physician owned is one thing Dr. Baker finds unique about Mountain Region Family Medicine. The doctors make the decisions in the best interest of the patients. And their business is without a doubt patient centered. That is one reason why Dr. Baker is in family medicine; it is a noble practice to be a part of. Gaining the trust of the patient, in line with values, is a huge part of what makes Mountain Region Family Medicine what it is. It is small, containing seventeen doctors, and they are closely knit with each other, just as they are with their patients. The doctors within the practice are extremely passionate about their patients and they do let the family decide what they feel is best for the patient. Mountain Region Family Medicine proves their loyalty to those that pass through their doors and care by being informative, educational and health focused.

Dr. Baker looks at his profession as a lifestyle. No drugs are used if preventable due to reasons of money and side effects for the patients. Dr. Baker supports and advocates for preventative medicine. Preventative health is the one way to make sure you stay out of the hospital and safely at home. However, if drugs are needed for certain situations, they will absolutely be implemented in the best interest of the patient. Going along with the idea of being a one stop shop, Mountain Region Family Medicine offers same day appointments; especially for patients with acute care needs; their doctor is their doctor. Yet, if higher level care is required, the patient will immediately be placed in the care of those qualified professionals. Regardless of the attention desired, Mountain Region Family Medicine and Dr. Baker will make certain the patient receives the utmost care. Due to the fact Dr. Baker grew up in our region, he talks to those that come to him in a way a friend or neighbor would address each other. Dr. Baker wants those in his community to live a long life of quality and happiness. Patients are the number one concern of Dr. Baker and Mountain Region Family Medicine, and both are always receiving new family and neighbors to their care. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Baker please call 423-230-2801. His office is located in Suite 2800, on the 2nd floor of The Press Building.

RAM RETURNS

TO THE TRI-CITIES with free dental, vision, and medical care

R

emote Area Medical- RAM® is a major nonprofit provider of mobile clinics delivering free, high-quality, dental, vision and medical care to underserved and uninsured individuals. They will be returning to Gray, TN, on November 1-3, 2019. Services available at the RAM clinic include dental cleanings, dental fillings, dental extractions, dental x-rays, eye exams, glaucoma testing, eyeglass prescriptions, eyeglasses made on-site, women's health exams, and general medical exams. All RAM services are FREE and no ID is required. Operated in partnership with Appalachian Mountain Project Access, the RAM clinic in Gray will be held at Appalachian Fairgrounds, 100 Lakeview Street, Gray, TN 37615. The clinic parking lot is currently scheduled to open no later than 12 a.m. midnight on Friday, November 1. Ticket distribution typically begins at 3 a.m., and patients will be seen in chronological order according to their ticket number when clinic doors open at 6 a.m. This process will repeat on Saturday, November 2 and Sunday November 3. In some situations, such as inclement weather, volunteer cancellations, or other circumstances outside of RAM’s control, ticketing may occur earlier than 3 a.m. RAM encourages everyone who would like services, especially dental services, to arrive as early as possible.

Remote Area Medical (RAM) is a major nonprofit organization that operates mobile clinics delivering free, highquality, dental, vision, and medical services to underserved and uninsured individuals who do not have access to or cannot afford a doctor. RAM’s Corps of more than 135,000 volunteers is comprised of licensed dental, vision, and medical professionals, as well as general support staff, who have treated more than 785,000 individuals delivering $135 million worth of free health care services. Last year, RAM held clinics in Tennessee, Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, New Mexico, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, Haiti, and the Philippines. Upcoming RAM clinic locations include Ohio, Tennessee, Missouri, Nevada, Maryland, and Kentucky.

This will be the third year for the Remote Area Medical clinic in Gray held at the Appalachian Fairgrounds. “RAM has long been committed to serving the residents of East Tennessee. Last year, thanks to our dedicated volunteers and solid support from local organizations, like Project Access, RAM was able to serve almost 800 people in need, providing $556,768 worth of free care. We hope to do that again this time,” said RAM CEO, Jeff Eastman. There is still a need for additional vision and dental professionals to volunteer their time and skills in Gray. For more information about volunteering at a RAM mobile clinic, please visit www.ramusa.org or call 865-579-1530. According to U.S. census data, the poverty rate in Washington County, Tennessee is 14.9%, which exceeds the national average of 12.3%. Additionally, more than one out of every ten people under the age of 65 lacks health insurance coverage. People in these communities also suffer from a disproportionately higher prevalence of poor health and chronic health conditions, like Diabetes, COPD, and Hypertension. Because of these factors, RAM expects to treat 800 - 1,000 people from Gray, the Tri-Cities, and the surrounding communities during the three-day clinic. vipseenmag.com

DR. ZACH

Sumpter Born in the bluegrass region of Eastern Kentucky, Dr. Zach Sumpter found his way into the TriCities at a young age. Dr. Sumpter would often travel across state lines into Norton, Virginia and through East Tennessee into Gatlinburg. Dr. Sumpter began his higher learning at the University of Kentucky in Lexington where he studied computer engineering. For ďŹ ve years, Dr. Sumpter worked as a software engineer, however, he found that journey was not for him and he changed his path; a path that would lead him to the Tri-Cities. Dr. Sumpter knew that he wanted to work in the medical ďŹ eld because he had a heart for people. Dr. Sumpter entered the University of Pikeville Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine for his medical school education. Dr. Sumpter studied Osteopathic Medicine including manipulative therapy and holistic medicine. He eventually found himself in Bristol and the TriCities area where he attended the ETSU Family Medicine Residency Program at Bristol for three years studying family medicine. Dr. Sumpter absolutely fell in love with the Tri-Cities region and knew he wanted to be here; not only in heart, but in healing.

SERVICES Acute Care Chronic Disease Management

august 2019

On August 1, 2019, Dr. Sumpter joined Mountain Region Family Medicine to become part of an independent and physician led practice. Each of the Mountain Region Family Medicine offices operate independently and the physicians practice “evidencebased medicine” to achieve the best outcomes for their patients. There is no middle business man when it comes to the physicians within Mountain Region Family Medicine; all the doctors within the facility determine what is best for their patient.

With patients being at the center of the business, Mountain Region Family Medicine and Dr. Sumpter, want to make everything as convenient as possible for those patients that come through their door and into their care. Right there in the facility, patients can find on site diagnostic X-ray imaging, ultrasound including general, cardiac & vascular imaging and full service laboratory diagnostics. Having such conveniences in house makes it easier and less stressful on the patient. Dr. Sumpter, along with all physicians at Mountain Region Family Medicine, want to make sure the patient is taken care of to the highest level of care and convenience. Dr Sumpter is taking over the practice of Dr. Robert Funke, one of the founding members of Mountain Region Family Medicine, who is retiring after many years of providing medical services in the community. Just as Mountain Region Family Medicine, Dr. Sumpter is always accepting new patients; from age 8 to adult. Because of his background and love for the Tri-Cities area, you can be assured that Dr. Sumpter will treat you with the utmost respect, and will always treat you like a neighbor. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Sumpter please call 423-230-2700. His office is located in Suite 2700, on the 2nd floor of The Press Building.

NANCY WILLIAMS AND KATHERINE MANSY

New Book Offers Encouragement for Women Struggling with Infertility A

new Christian devotional book, now available on Amazon, brings to light the unspoken issues and struggles of infertility—a problem that potentially affects more women than breast cancer does. Local author Nancy C. Williams, who herself experienced difficulty in having children, has released “A Crocus in the Desert,” which features devotions and prayers along with personal stories from others who have walked this road of frustration and sorrow. “Mayo Clinic estimates that as many as one in six couples experience infertility,” Williams says. “It’s more common than you would expect. But when women go through this, they often suffer in silence. It’s not an easy subject for us to discuss because it’s so personal.” Williams interviewed both women and men to get their stories and perspectives on coping with emotions, extended family conversations, treatments, and financial strains that infertility can place on the marriage relationship. She includes their advice (all with names changed for anonymity) and provides options for prayer and reflection. “Going through childlessness, miscarriage, and the repercussions of abortion can be very traumatic,” Williams continues. “Emotions run the gamut from despair and grief to anger and conflict. Budgeting, dealing with in-laws, healthcare, and careers can all be affected…all while hormone changes can send you on the roller coaster ride of your life.”

august 2019

Williams chose the “crocus” title from Isaiah 35:1-2, Bible verses that offer hope for those who feel as if they are walking through a barren wasteland.

“My chief purpose in writing this book is to come alongside these women and reassure them that they are not alone,” she says. “They have a heavenly Friend in Jesus Christ who walks beside them every step of the way. And if they open their hearts to receive help, they’ll find many other women at church or among friends and family who have dealt with these very same issues.” The book is also appropriate for medical professionals, pastors, counselors, and family members who want to understand how infertility affects couples. Williams is a veteran writer and Milligan College instructor whose work has appeared in national magazines, corporate communications, advertising, and local media over the years. She and her physician husband, Mark, reside in Johnson City and have two adult children. At the end of her book, Williams relates her own story about their adoption journey to Siberia.

DD’S IMPORTANT, TIMELESS QUESTION Over 100 years ago DD Palmer, DC asked an important question that sparked a new profession – the Chiropractic profession. “I desired to know why one person was ailing and his associate, eating at the same table, working in the same shop, at the same bench was not. Why? What difference was there in these two persons that caused one to have various diseases, while his partner escaped?” This question is just as important for you and your family today. There is so much toxicity in the air, food and water that we consume. Chemtrails mark the skies, genetically modified foods are sold in our stores, and the quality of our water supply is so poor that the bottled water industry generates $11 billion a year. How resistant are you to all of these toxins in the environment? How capable is your body of resisting the stress from the negative forces all around us? What is the answer to DD Palmer’s question? Without a doubt, one important part of the answer is that your body must be able to adapt in a healthy way to your surroundings. The system within your body that controls and coordinates every function of your body and adapts you to your environment is your nervous system. Healthy nerve supply is essential for a healthy life. Your brain consists of 100 billion neurons and sends messages at 325 mph over 45 miles

of nerves within your body. This highly sophisticated and coordinated network is the Information Technology (IT) super highway that must be functioning properly for your body to appropriately adapt to your environment. Cut off this system completely and your cells, tissues and organ systems will die. Interfere with this system and your body cannot function the way that it is supposed to. Your internal adaptation mechanisms become weak. Vertebral subluxation is a condition that happens in the spine and nervous system when it is injured from the birth process, childhood falls, accidents, or stress of any kind. Because your natural IT system can be affected by this condition, it can result in immediate symptoms and mimic any diagnosis or it can lie dormant and asymptomatic for decades leading to many types of health problems in the future. If you truly want to strengthen your body’s ability to adapt, you must make the correction and elimination of this condition a priority – before it leads to problems. Certainly, healthy non-toxic food is an important and healthy choice. Exercise to keep your body fit and strong will build your confidence, increase your resistance, and help prevent health problems. However, without a healthy spine and nervous system, the food and the fitness cannot be assimilated properly. Dr. Palmer was correct and the profession he founded lives on, 118 years later and counting. Isn’t it time that you make the health of your spine and nervous system a priority? Make the health of your spine and nervous system a priority. Make good choices across the board. Live The 100 Year Lifestyle and enjoy a sensational century.

DR. SUSAN

Creech

Dr. Susan Creech decided to become a dentist at the age of seven (7) after having a tooth repaired by her dentist. For the past fifteen (15) years, Dr. Creech has been creating smiles her patients are proud of and continues to look for ways to improve. Dr. Creech has traveled across the United States and back in order to take the most intensive and comprehensive continuing education classes she could find. She has studied in Seattle, Phoenix, Las Vegas, San Diego, Tampa Bay, Atlanta, Washington, and Oregon. Presently, Dr. Creech is in the process of becoming an Accredited Member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD). She has already passed the AACD written examination and, over the next five years, will begin submitting clinical cases to a board of examiners. Upon completion of the accreditation process, Dr. Creech will join a very select and small group of dentists in the state of Tennessee who have achieved this milestone.

WHY CHOOSE DR. CREECH? You should choose Dr. Creech if you value your oral health and value relationships. She has a unique way of becoming your friend and developing a relationship with you while helping you to overcome dental challenges and creating a healthy, natural smile. Dr. Creech and her team surround patients with comfort and care that is specific to the patient’s needs, while giving them the best experience possible.

Before & After

What can Dr. Creech do for you? Dr. Creech can help you the same way she helped Cherie Draper. Cherie had never been confident with her smile, despite working in the dental profession as a dental assistant for 36 years. She felt that her smile had been an obstacle for most of her life due to missing and misaligned teeth. After becoming a team member of Dr. Susan Creech in 2015, she saw first hand the way patients’ entire lives were improved by improving the quality of their smile. After seeing so many “before and after” transformations, she finally approached Dr. Creech to seek her own smile make-over. Since completion of treatment, Cherie smiles more often, is more confident and no longer feels that her smile is an obstacle to her.

Angela R. Cameron, DDS, PC, FDOCS, LVIF, FAGD

Putting the “YOU” in Youthful Consulting with multiple dentists these patients considered several practices before choosing Sophisticated Smiles for their treatment with sedation dentistry. “Our goal was to enhance the patient’s ability to function and give them the “wow” factor they desired, taking years off of their smiles in the process, improving the teeth, improving the bite, and their jaw position; and thus improving their personal and professional life,” says Dr. Cameron.

THE SMILE MAKEOVER “The most rewarding thing that I can do in my practice is smile makeover. It warms my heart to see people’s lives changed by the transformation that we are able to give them. The enhanced beauty/appearance, the new confidence, the new outlook on life, the chronic pain relief,---I’m always amazed by the power of cosmetic dentistry can have on the psyche,” says Dr. Cameron who used veneers, porcelain crowns, dental implants, TMJ treatments, Botox, Whitening, and Invisalign to beautify patients’ smiles. “It can be particularly rewarding to make over a smile while using sedation dentistry. When patients wake up from what feels like a nap to them, they are in awe of their new smiles. The transformation can be just as emotional as it is physical.” Going beyond just the teeth, gums, and jaw joint. Sophisticated Smiles offers a “smile lift” that works to reshape the natural teeth, boosting overall lower half of the face. “Smaller teeth can be filled out and lightened, and veneers can straighten/align teeth, fix dark spots, and add dimension,” says Dr. Cameron. “In the end, the whole face looks better.” Sophisticated Smiles, the well-established practice of dentist, Dr. Angela R. Cameron, is a welcoming balance of elegance and southern charm. The white brick building houses a foyer with a gleaming chandelier, bronze statue art gallery, and cozy fireplace nook with stone mantle. Yet, despite its deluxe décor, the office remains homey and comfortable, thanks to the friendly, knowledgeable team and quality dental care delivered. Despite her tenure, Dr. Cameron maintains a dignified humility, which beautifully complements her vast accomplishments. Recognized both locally and nationally for the stunning smiles she creates, Dr. Cameron feels blessed to be able to have such a large patient following that allows her to what she loves for a living.

WHY CHOOSE US?

Three reasons: Our Team/Doctor, our facilities, and our passion/commitment to excellence. We go above and beyond to provide all of our patients with five-star, VIP treatment. Whether it’s through our spa-like amenities, before-and-after photos, wax-up models, video demonstrations, patient testimonials, attention to detail, one thing is for certain--- we don’t take shortcuts. We take the time to get it right the first time, educating, empowering, and fulfilling dreams.

DR. KATHY

Sanders

Dr. Kathy Sanders is only the 81st dentist worldwide to achieve Accredited Fellow status with the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD). The AACD is the world’s largest organization committed to excellence in cosmetic dentistry. They provide the framework for the certification of both accreditation and accredited fellow status – the highest achievement granted by the AACD. The three pillars of the AACD are education, credentialing, and philanthropy. They provide amazing opportunities for continuing education with world renowned speakers along with the opportunity to collaborate with other dentists who have the same mind set of excellence. Accredited Fellow status is not an overnight achievement. In fact, it’s not even something you can attain in several years. Fellowship status is an arduous journey that begins with the Accreditation process which Dr. Sanders achieved in 2006. Currently there are fewer than 450 Accredited members worldwide. Accreditation requires a written examination, specific continuing education workshops, the submission and passing of 5 perfect cases, and an oral presentation. In contrast Fellowship requires the submission and passing of 50 perfect cases after you have achieved accreditation! The most striking factor of this process of case submission is that it is all completed anonymously thus ensuring that each doctors work stands alone.

UNSPOKEN QUESTIONS

They have access to the world’s very best cosmetic dentistry … right here in Kingsport, Tennessee.

IS COSMETIC DENTISTRY ONLY FOR BEAUTY QUEENS? Absolutely not! All our patients benefit from Dr. Sanders desire to provide a healthy functional smile.

They have smiles that are not only aesthetically natural and beautiful — but are also healthy, comfortable and function better than ever before!

IS IT “VAIN” TO WORRY ABOUT YOUR SMILE? Not necessarily. If your smile detracts from your selfconfidence, then it may be negatively impacting you in some areas of life. Also, seemingly cosmetic concerns are often associated with an underlying clinical need.

They enjoy exceptional quality. Dr. Sanders uses only the best materials and leadingedge techniques along with an AACD accredited fellow ceramist who has the same standards of excellence and artistry.

IS COSMETIC DENTISTRY EXPENSIVE? While it is an investment, we can often work in stages to help make it more affordable. Patient financing options are also available.

DR. JEREMIAH

Sturgill

Dr. Jeremiah Sturgill grew up in the small town of Big Stone Gap in southwestern Virginia. Even as a teenager, he knew he wanted to be an orthodontist. After seeing how much braces changed his smile, he was inspired to help others achieve similar success through orthodontic treatment. He kicked off his academic journey by attending King University in Bristol, Tennessee on an academic scholarship. He graduated with honors and earned dual degrees in biology and business administration. After college, Dr. Sturgill attended dental school at Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health, located just outside of Phoenix. Again he chose the dual major route, earning his Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) and Master of Public Health (MPH) degrees. Dr. Sturgill completed the Postgraduate Orthodontic and Dentofacial certificate in orthodontics and a doctorate in health education (DHEd). He was also chosen to participate in implant osseointegration study at Harvard School of Dental Medicine. He wrapped up his training by serving as chief resident for his program and by completing rotations at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center – Barrow Neurological Institute Cleft and Craniofacial Center. After undergoing the rigorous process of becoming board certified, which involved hundreds of additional hours of preparation to demonstrate that he was able to provide the highest level of patient care, Dr. Sturgill earned the distinction of becoming a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. This honor is only bestowed upon 40% of practicing orthodontists. While Dr. Sturgill’s wife, Dr. Riley Sturgill, was attending residency at Virginia Commonwealth University, he joined one of the most prestigious practices in Richmond, Virginia. He was also tapped to join the faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University as an Assistant Professor for the Orthodontic and Dentofacial Orthopedic residency program. He continues to teach aspiring orthodontists the intricacies of straightening teeth and aligning the bite. Currently, he practices in Johnson City, Tennessee where he recently unveiled a state-of-the-art office remodel designed to provide family-friendly, cutting-edge care.

Before & After

What is Orthodontics? Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that corrects teeth and jaws that are positioned improperly. Teeth that are crooked or not in the right position can also detract from one’s appearance. A specialist in this field is called an orthodontist. Orthodontists receive two or more years of addition education beyond their four years of dental school in an ADA-approved orthodontic residency program.

We offer affordable payment plans and no down payment. No referral is needed and we accept most insurance plans.

ADVANCED INTEGRATED

Medicine M

ost of us have regular health symptoms in our lives. Those symptoms may be weight issues, blood pressure, diabetes, pain etc‌ The question is, do we treat our health symptoms the same way we treat symptoms in other areas of our life? Let’s look at your car. If a dash board light appears as you are driving down the road (symptom), do you pull out a marker and cover it up, or do you head for your mechanic for a diagnosis and a solution to the light coming on. Exactly! You drive to your mechanic to address the cause of your problem. Relationships always look to the cause of any conflict and not merely addressing the symptom. Why is your spouse acting a certain way, find out the cause, address it and move forward with a solution.

august 2019

WHAT IS A HEALTHY YOU? Health care needs to be the same way. If a symptom presents, get to the cause that has “turned on a dash light”. Weight gain, diabetes, blood pressure... any symptom that has a gradual onset (chronic), start addressing the cause instead of treating the symptom.

treatments include rehabilitation, modalities, trigger point and joint injections, bracing and chiropractic. This combination, when utilized at the same time delivers the optimal results in restoring normal joint function.

Here’s the catch….it takes action on your behalf. Action to change what occurs in your life on a daily/weekly basis to change your current outcomes (symptoms). Typically this includes but not limited to what you eat, drink, and breathe. Sleep, exercise, and stress also affect recovery. Here at Advocate Integrated Medicine (AIM) we offer you, the patient, a team approach to evaluation and a team approach to care plans. This involves an MD, Nurse Practioner, Chiropractor, and therapist. We also look at the total involvement of your joint symptoms. This means we look at the entire extremity, look at the entire spine or the entire upper/lower half of your body because if we don’t put you back together as a whole, then another joint in your body will flare up due to compensation. This makes sense…doesn’t it! AIM offers two facets to our delivery model. The first is Physical Medicine which restores normal function and use to a patient’s joints and movement patterns. Most joint issues start out as repetitive joint injuries or acute traumatic injuries. If normal function is not immediately addressed, joint deterioration continues until osteoarthritis is determined, which is arthritis. Physical medicine

The second facet of our practice in Regenerative Medicine. This includes injecting human cell and tissue products into a joint to restore the articular surfaces and restoring joint function. Combining these injections with unloading bracing, nutritional consultation, rehabilitation, medical and chiropractic...patients benefit by the TEAM approach. Healthcare of the future will include human cell and tissue injections combined with functional physical medicine and functional internal medicine. These approaches, when combined in a TEAM setting, restores normal balance and function to the systems of the body that control and regulate the immune system and the control centers… which equal health and vitality. PATIENT WINS! If you suffer from joint pain, degeneration or arthritis, we have your solution and that is to keep your own joints… that’s right…keep your own joints. Restore and rebuild those joints and get back to living the life you imagined. We AIM to give you a new experience in health care, We AIM to give you a new outcome and we AIM to help you enjoy the life you have been dreaming of…we are Advocate Integrated Medicine!

BALANCED MEDICAL CENTER Balanced Medical Center was born from an idea that patients deserve the best of both worlds. Chiropractors and medical professionals have been trying to help patients with their spine and joint pain for decades, but rarely working together collaboratively. Dr. Sam Messimer DC, who has been in practice since 1991, has decided to take the treatment of the community to another level. The mission statement of Balanced Medical Center is to help patients end their pain as quickly and efficiently as possible. With the recent addition of Lindsey Smith, an experienced Nurse Practitioner to our staff, our patients will benefit from a multi-faceted approach to their course of treatment. This includes a thorough functional exam and any x-rays needed to determine the exact course of treatment necessary. We will evaluate pain levels, diminished ranges of motion, and any muscle weakness or spasm. From there, the Nurse Practitioner and Chiropractor will collaborate in developing the most efficient treatment plan for your individual case. Lindsey will be able to administer trigger point injections for help with pain and muscle spasms. From there, rehab protocols can be established along with rehab exercises, stretching, and chiropractic adjustments. If the team feels there is a disc issue, the facility has a state of the art decompression table. This table, coupled with ultrasound, often times is able to alleviate disc issues and pain radiating into the legs and even upper extremities.

REGENERATIVE MEDICINE

We are also very excited to be offering a regenerative medicine option at our office. Sometimes, surgery isn’t an option for pain relief, or perhaps therapies haven’t worked. In these cases, regenerative medicine may be a solution. This natural treatment is beneficial for chronic pain sufferers of arthritic knees, hips, and shoulders. SO, WHAT IS REGENERATIVE MEDICINE? Regenerative Medicine involves using your body to heal itself utilizing naturally occurring cells and specialized fluids. The procedure involves injecting amniotic allograph serum which triggers new cell growth within the area injected. Over the following few weeks, these cells grow and begin to form new tissue. This helps damaged or injured knees, hips, or shoulders without a surgical procedure.

What causes varicose veins? The actual cause of varicose veins is inefficient, faulty vein valves. These valves don’t close properly, allowing blood to leak back with gravity and pool in the vein. This causes the veins to bulge and stretch and result in many unpleasant side effects such as aching and throbbing pain, itching, heavy and tired legs, and poor venous circulation. Heredity is a primary factor in over 80% of varicose vein cases. Other aggravating factors may include pregnancy, obesity, hormone therapy, standing or sitting for long periods of time and injury. Approximately 80 million Americans have varicose veins.

MICROBURST TECHNOLOGY?

Competent valves in your veins keep the flow going toward the heart and prevent flow by gravity backwards toward the feet. Those with faulty/ incompetent valves develop reverse flow in the opposite direction toward the feet which promotes varicose veins. Vein walls weaken resulting in bulges in the veins easily seen on the surface of the skin. As venous pressure increases over a prolonged period of time, symptoms of edema (swelling), pain, itching can develop and in later stages discoloration and ulceration. However for evaluation of the root cause the deeper unseen veins must be imaged via ultrasound to determine their competency and for treatment.

Only VeinGogh incorporates Microburst Technology, a powerful and revolutionary frequency regulator that achieves fixed amplitude, allowing controllable power for heating of vessels. Microburst Technology allows the VeinGogh to deliver peak wave modulation-fixing each pulse at an exact, unfluctuating amplitude for greater control. The precise peaks help deliver consistent power. Microburst Technology allows the VeinGogh to deliver peak wave modulation-fixing each pulse at an exact, unfluctuating amplitude for greater control. The resulting pulse train also encompasses sharp, precise peaks to minimize the risk of damage and deliver consistent results. VeinGogh is the easy way to reliably treat cosmetically unacceptable conditions of telangiectasia and spider veins. Unlike IPL and most Lasers, VeinGogh can safely treat any skin type, including tanned skin. Compact, portable VeinGogh instantly eliminates vessels dependably and repeatably. Veingogh delivers results using unique, proprietary Microburst Technology.

The Olive’s Endless Possibilities T

here are thousands of varieties of olives on the planet. Each one has aromas and flavors unique to the variety from which it comes. Think apples ... Granny Smith, Red Delicious, Fuji, Pink Lady. They all taste different and add an entirely different flavor to a dish. Same with olives and olive oils! Each varietal will flavor your culinary creations differently.

Our olive oils are produced by cold-pressing early harvest olives within the first 2-5 hours of harvest to capture the nectar at its most nutritious state. Lab testing at this point insures they are high in polyphenols and low in free fatty acids, as well as a myriad of other credentials. They are then sealed and shipped to us with great attention given to transport conditions so we bring you the freshest, finest, award-winning olive oils found anywhere! Ours are the ONLY olive oils in the world carrying the “Ultra Premium” seal, boasting the highest standards in the world of olive oil. When properly handled, our UP olive oils will maintain their superior chemistry for up to 2 years. However, we bottle them on site, as they arrive, and suggest you use them within 6 months to derive their richest health benefits. A fused olive oil is produced when olives, a fruit, are crushed with another fruit, herb or vegetable and their juices or oils “fuse” together. Known as “agrumato,” these oils are packed with the innate characteristics of a high quality extra virgin olive oil, as well as the innate characteristics of the fruit, herb or vegetable with which they are crushed.

Featured MEYER LEMON WHOLE FRUIT FUSED OLIVE OIL Crushing early harvest olives and Meyer lemons together produces an olive oil rich in antioxidants, anti-inflammatories, anti-cancer agents innate in the early-harvest pressed olive oil, as well as the Vitamin C, antibacterial, antiviral, immune boosting properties innate in the lemons. This oil is perfect for marinating anything to which you want to add a rich lemony flavor. Use it in Greek pasta and salad recipes. Marinate fish and seafood of any kind with this oil. Coat deep green vegetables (broccoli, green beans, asparagus) with it before cooking. Drizzle on skewered fruit, fruit salad, grilled watermelon! Substitute for vegetable oil in cakes, cookies, tarts, muffins, breads and pancakes. Use it to make thick fruit or vegetable smoothies. And, of course, it’s the perfect topping for ice cream or yogurt. Come in to sample the extraordinary flavor of our Meyer Lemon Fused Olive Oil today!

In small bowl, toss pecans with olive oil to coat. Set aside. In small pan, combine water, brown sugar and salt over medium heat to melt down sugar (about 2 minutes). Bristol’s Star Spangled Celebration, presented by Believe in Bristol, was a family-fun way to celebrate the 4th of July! Taking place after Bristol’s Independence Day Parade, there was plenty to do for all ages in downtown Bristol. Veterans were recognized on stage as the audience was led in the Star-Spangled Banner and God Bless America. Free watermelon was offered by Kroger, but there were also funnel cakes, snow cones, and more to purchase. The children enjoyed inflatables and face painting, and the Lions Club held their annual rubber duck race. Ricky Matthews and Christy Calcagno with WCYB emceed the events that happened on stage – a watermelon eating contest and a pie eating contest. After things got messy, there was live music from The Cleverly’s, accomplished musicians who put a unique bluegrass spin on cover songs such as “No Diggity” and “Low.” The night ended with a bang – an impressive fireworks show.

Bristol Friends of Steele Creek

Grove Dedication EVENT SUBMITTED

The City of Bristol, Tennessee and the Friends of Steele Creek Nature Center and Park honored the memories of Clarence “Wilkie” Wilkerson and Lloyd Powell Foster on June 14, 2019. Two groves of trees were planted at Steele Creek Park to honor the two men and their commitment and longtime dedication to the preservation of the park. Clarence “Wilkie” Wilkerson was a child of nature with an inquiring mind and a friendly smile. He was an active and dedicated member of Friends of Steele Creek Nature Center and Park for many years and enjoyed attending its co-sponsored events and annual meetings. Wilkie was very supportive of his wife, Becky, who served on the Friends of Steele Creek Board of Directors for over ten years and continues to serve on the Expansion Planning Committee as Secretary. She and Wilkie had a daily ritual of taking their morning or evening walk along Lakeside Trail. Becky was also responsible for getting the Fitness Trail established at the park. Wilkie’s son John reacted to the grove dedication by saying, “That’s fantastic. A far more appropriate honor than anything I can think of, and what better contribution to our environment as well.” Lloyd Powell Foster’s favorite place to be was outdoors. He was dedicated to the preservation of Appalachia’s wilderness, its parks, and its caves for future generations. His love of the Shenandoah Valley Mountains drew him to Northeast Tennessee. Powell had a passion for traveling and hiking natural areas of the world and also enjoyed establishing his own trail throughout his own property near Holston Lake. His activism helped found a local chapter of the Sierra Club and the National Speleological Society. He described himself as a “humanistic naturalist” and was a long time Friends of Steele Creek Nature Center and Park member and ardent supporter of his wife, Sharon, who contributed countless hours coordinating the gardens work project at the Nature Center. Sharon also served for many years as a Friends of Steele Creek Nature Center and Park Board Member, and volunteered in various aspects of the Nature Center. Approximately twenty years ago, Sharon and Powell made a generous donation, which led to the purchase of valuable land in the Trinkle Hollow area of Steele Creek Park. Hopefully the groves will help all of us stay connected to these men’s memories, as their roots will always run deep within our lives.

Modern Meets Traditional STORY BY DAVID MALLORY AND TODD FIELDS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MIKE HENSLEY, JOHNSON CITY AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY

O

ur region is blessed with a wonderful medical community. We have a local medical school, as well as a thriving healthcare system. This synergy has brought physicians from all over the country to our region. Such is the case of the homeowner, that we are featuring in this month’s article. A physician, who wishes to remain anonymous, relocated here from Florida, a few years ago. He set up practice in Johnson City. His wife took a position as a nursing instructor at the Quillen College of Medicine and, along with their daughter, took up residence in a new home, perched high on a knoll overlooking Boone Lake. Living in the Sunshine State gave them both a strong appreciation for the lively and colorful energy of southern Florida, which is heavily influenced by the Cuban population there.

They are also art lovers and appreciate all forms, but they are particularly drawn to modern/abstract and surreal paintings. Their former home, with its sleek design, lent itself to displaying this art. However, the home they purchased here in Tennessee was a different story. The home was very traditional and had lots of “built-in” features, like antique fireplaces, and grand chandeliers. Not exactly something that blends easily with hip modern art. After several failed attempts at designing their home themselves, this busy duo decided to hire us to assist. The couple collects several artist’s work. Jose Mijares, Wilfredo Lam, and Tadeo, as well as, local Tennessee artist, Tracye Amber Souders. The first space we designed was the dining room. We began by covering the walls with a textured wallpaper, in a frosty white color. This provided a great backdrop, for a collection of paintings from various artists. vipseenmag.com

67

VIP

Home The centerpiece is a 1956 painting, by their favorite artist Jose Mijares, of whom the family has collected for several years. We brought in a large modern, burled wood console to anchor the wall. Lamps created from mid-century decanters were perfect to illuminate this gallery of art. The dining table belonged to the doctor’s father. We gave it a little modern spin when we upholstered the captain’s chairs in a graphic black and white fabric. Dinner guests will be able to sit and admire this collection of artwork as they dine. What a treat! The living room didn’t have a lot of walls to display art, but we wanted it to still have the same vibe as the dining room. The space was emptied, with the exception of the large 12-foot leather sofa that they wanted to use. So, we began in the living room by creating a mood using black wallpaper, with a teardrop/ paisley design. This was offset by tall drapery panels in a champagne linen.

Home

When the homeowners, visited our showroom in Johnson City, they spotted the two large green chairs and loved them, so we decided to use them as a focal point in the room. We, then, utilized the bright green as an accent color. Remember, they love color – so we used bright greens and splashes of pink, to pull the eye around the space. Notice the acrylic cocktail table, how chic and cool is that? The bank of windows were also another focal point in the room. Simple custom panels with decorative tape edging soften the room and set a back-drop for the metal clad chest. A pair of armchairs upholstered in a bright green and pink Marwari pattern fabric provide a punch of visual interest. An eclectic mix of lighting and accessories completed the look. Stylish and sophisticated but comfortable, inviting, and livable. Livable luxury is something that we have become known for. Luxury isn’t luxury if it isn’t comfortable. The physician and his wife were so pleased with the two spaces, that they added a third. The upstairs billiard/cigar lounge. The doctor also enjoys a good cigar and wanted a space that he could indulge this guilty pleasure. But he didn’t want the typical “dark

and moody” lounge. He wanted something that was vibrant and would, once again, lend itself to displaying more artwork. A vintage billiard table was “gifted”with the purchase of the house and it was purple! We will admit that it nearly gave us a heart attack from a design standpoint, but we embraced it and used tones of orange to offset the purple. We placed a leather Chesterfield sofa and added modern lamps to anchor the gallery of art. Chinoiserie chairs in shades of pumpkin, flank the antique fireplace. We chose a wall-covering that provided a cozy masculine edge to the room, without being dark and heavy. And a modern styled pub table was placed in front of the windows, which provide a birds-eye view of Boone lake, and the mountains beyond. Look at that view! This was a fun and unique job for us. It was a pleasure to design a space that was out of the ordinary, for such a fun family. vipseenmag.com

First Annual DulaFest EVENT COVERED BY RACHEL K. BURRUS

The 1st annual Dula Fest held in honor of Dr. Chris Dula took place at the Willow Tree Music Room and Coffeehouse on the weekend of June 2223, 2019. With the passing of Dr. Dula in January 2019 from an aggressive form of brain cancer, family and friends organized a two-day benefit music festival in honor of the beloved professor - with all proceeds directed to American Cancer Society and Family Promise of Johnson City. Chris Dula was a passionate advocate of charity work, never taking profit. “In his will, he specified that all money raised for these benefit concerts be donated to charities,” says Denise Dula, wife of the late Dr. Chris Dula. During the two-day festival, locals and out-of-towners alike mingled, drank coffee, and enjoyed splendid music performed by singers and songwriters whose lives were touched by Dr. Dula in his friendship and teaching. A minimum donation of $10 at the door earned entrance to the benefit music festival. Denise Dula spoke highly of her husband’s deep passion for charity work - implementing music and community in each of his charity shows, which he scheduled together with players and students. Dr. Dula had a profound influence on a wide array of people - “I’m still receiving letters from people all over the country,” says Denise Dula. “He love everybody. He treated everyone with love. We just want to keep his legacy alive.” With the hope of DulaFest becoming an annual event to raise money for charity, there is no shortage of enthusiasm from the public. Many organizers and volunteers were involved in the process of scheduling the event, all inspired by Dr. Dula, who himself organized shows for charity on a regular basis with “Cryss Dula & Friends.” “They never practiced,” says Denise Dula. “but they always flowed.”

EVENT COVERED BY LINDA COFFEY

The 2nd Annual Strut your Mutt Dog Show was held on Saturday, June 22nd at Warrior’s Path State Park. Dogs competed for medals such as “Ugliest”, “Cutest Wiggle Butt”, and “Owner Look Alike”. Every dog present was a winner in one way or another – especially the dogs that found their “fur-ever homes” through the adoption opportunities. The only qualification to participate in the show was for the dog to have been adopted through a local shelter.

Vendors were set up for shopping opportunities from handbags to dog attire. The opportunity to have your pet micro-chipped was also available. Many area businesses sponsored the event and were featured on t-shirts that were given to each participant, or available for purchase. Although a storm caused the show to be moved indoors, it could not dampen the excitement and enthusiasm for the event. This year, an award was presented for the “Best in Show”. The event was hosted by Passion Animal Welfare Society and Handbags for Hounds. Passion Animal Welfare Society is a volunteer-based charitable organization dedicated to saving homeless dogs and cats. A spirit of comradery filled the Aquatic Center as teams would enter with their robots. Two of the teams were comprised of all girls, but a crowd favorite was “R-Mateys from the DobynsBennett Excel Program. Each group had been organized into mock companies, an exercise to develop entrepreneurial thinking and project management skills while spurring innovation and collaboration. After submerging the robots, the team would operate an obstacle course by remote. Underwater cameras were set up to livestream. Divers were present to reset the courses between competitions. The MATE ROV Competition requires students to apply math, electronics, engineering, and physics skills for the classroom toward solving problems based on real-world workplace scenarios. The challenge for this year was to ensure public safety and healthy waterways by inspecting and repairing a hydroelectric dam; monitoring water quality, determining habitat diversity, and recovering a Civil War era cannon while marking the location of unexploded cannon shells.

TEAM FROM BEIJING, CHINA

The competition was established in 2001 and continues to be a popular event, with many past competitors returning as judges, scorekeepers, and other positions. Bunco and BBQ for Sullivan County Imagination Library EVENT COVERED BY CRYSTAL DAWN CARTER

It is time for great food and a fun game to help children get a head start on reading. On June 25th, many community members gathered together to help young children have access to books from the day they are born.

CARRIE SCHWARTZ WITH FED AND ANGIE MINOR SUSIE SEILER AND EVELYN EDWARDS

Sullivan County Imagination Library held their Rolling for Readers: Bunco & BBQ event to help launch their “Road to 70” campaign”. This campaign seeks 70 sponsors to contribute $12 per month to offset the cost of purchasing the books for participants. Sullivan County sends out around 7,000 books to children, ages’ birth to five, each month. Every child enrolled in the program gets one free book each month from birth until age five, which means over 60 books before they start school. The night featured some special guests to serve the food, as 96.3 “The Possum” radio station talent were on hand volunteering as part of United Way’s Week of Caring events. Sullivan County Imagination Library is sponsored by both Bristol and Kingsport United Way agencies.

Three Sullivan County librarians and three board members formed Sullivan County Imagination Library in 2003. They partnered with Kingsport Chamber Foundation to begin the process of offering children the free book program founded by Dolly Parton, The Imagination Library. In 2004, the group had entered into an agreement with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library that provides free books for children from birth to age five. The group has since branched out to its own non-profit. The group fundraises to offer every child in Sullivan County the chance to receive 60 books from birth to age five. The organization is part of the Governor’s Books from Birth Foundation and raises money to pay for the purchase of the books sent to children. Busking Around the World EVENT COVERED BY LINDA COFFEY

Busking Around the World changed the appearance of Downtown Kingsport on Saturday, July 13th. The historic streets provided the gateway to visiting countries around the world. The fourth annual Busking event helped kick off the week-long activities of the Kingsport FunFest activities. This year’s event included many different cultures, which shared their food, art, exhibits, and entertainment. Food was handed out to share the different tastes enjoyed around the world. Of course, there was a line for a taste of apple pie from the Appalachian display!

KALYNN EMILY AND OWEN THOMPSON WITH PAYTON HAMMETT

Buskers were highlighted throughout the streets, as they performed for the crowds. Busking is the art of standing on a street corner, performing your talent, and collecting tips. It was an excellent opportunity to hear local performers and also experience performances from different cultures. ERIN RILEY

Children (and adults) had the opportunities to explore different vehicles often seen around the city. It was kind of fun to walk on a school bus and know that you still have a few weeks of summer vacation! Other activities included Food trucks, Kids’ Zone, live performances, face painting, stilt walkers, magicians, chalk art, and so much more!

LISA AND MICHAEL WILLIAMS

EVENT COVERED BY LINDA COFFEY

One year ago, Jenny Feathers and Paula Scott realized that the circle in Ridgefields would be renovated and they started the quest to discover if it would be possible to use the Circle as a host site for Kingsport’s Sculpture Walk.

JENNY FEATHERS, JUDY GOSSELINKRESGE, AND PAULA SCOTT

BONNIE MACDONALD

On Tuesday, July 9th, 2019, that dream became a reality with the dedication of the statue, “Moondance”. Funding for the sculpture was made possible by the children on Mary and George Gosselin. Longtime residents of Kingsport, the Gosselin family resided in Ridgefields for over fifty-two years. Andrea told a story of how her mother enjoyed the Kingsport Sculpture Walk and expressed to her daughter that she would like to have a sculpture placed in her memory. Judy, Andrea, Jeff, and Peter thought this was the perfect opportunity to honor the memory of their parents. Neighbors and city leaders gathered at the circle for the dedication. Bonnie Macdonald welcomed the group and spoke about the Sculpture Walk and the Public Art Program. ViceMayor, Colette George expressed thanks to the Gosselin Family, the Garden Club, the Ridgefields Association, and Kingsport City Public Works for making the statue possible. The statue, by artist Mike Roug, will now be a permanent piece of the Public Art Program.

Kingsport Meals-On-Wheels Selects Their

First Annual ”Volunteers of the Year“ EVENT SUBMITTED

Meals-On-Wheels began operating in Kingsport back in the 1970s when a few ladies met and felt there was a need for senior citizens living alone and unable to prepare their meals to receive nutritious food. The ladies began cooking and delivering those meals from the kitchen at Waverly Road Presbyterian Church three times a week. Fast-forward to today and Meals-On-Wheels of Kingsport cooks and delivers approximately 220 meals five days a week out of two kitchens, First Presbyterian Church and still from Waverly Road Presbyterian Church and now involving hundreds of volunteer cooks and drivers. Somewhere along the line a board of directors was formed and Meals-On-Wheels became a United Way of Greater Kingsport agency. For some 40 years this volunteer operation was coordinated and managed by Mary Cunningham who is largely responsible for what it has become today. Mary finally retired a few years ago and she passed away last year. The board of directors recently decided to honor the memory of Mary Cunningham and at the same time recognize volunteers who have significantly contributed their time and work to make MealsOn-Wheels what it is today. On July 9 at First Presbyterian Church next to the kitchen where meals are prepared, five volunteers were given plaques for the Mary Cunningham Meals-On-Wheels Volunteer Award. The plaques have Mary’s picture on them. Those volunteers being recognized were: WILMA DEAN RUMGAY - one of the first cooks in the original organization in the 1970s.

CURTIS, PAUL, AND JOHANNA MONTGOMERY

LONESOME PINE

HARRIS AND EVELYN CANTRELL - long time cooks and drivers JANYCE DUDNEY - long time cook and organizer at the Waverly Road kitchen. KEN SIMMONS - long time coordinator at Waverly Road. Plaque presented posthumously to his daughter and two sons. Earlier this year Mary Cunningham’s granddaughter, Alyssia, came to Kingsport from out of state and worked two days in the kitchen at First Presbyterian in honor and memory of Mary.

Anniversary Fundraiser EVENT COVERED BY LINDA COFFEY

On Saturday, June 22nd, The Kingsport Farmer’s Market was filled with people celebrating Oasis of Kingsport’s anniversary. According to Shantell Bogle, Executive Director of Oasis, the late Kermit Addington would be in disbelief at how his dream has grown. Mr. Addington had a heart to serve those less fortunate and to share the message of the Gospel. His dream became a reality when Oasis opened its doors in 2014, and he got to witness his legacy of giving before passing away in 2016. According to Ms. Bogle, Oasis serves 17-20 people each day.

The Oasis offers ministry-based classes, support groups, and counseling programs. Sherri spoke to the group through tears, telling how she needed to be loved because she had been through so much abuse. Through the Oasis she has found her best friends. Saturday’s celebration included enough food to feed the masses, face-painting, tickets for carousel rides, activities for all ages, live worship bands, and many testimonies. THE WIT BIT

She is also passionate about helping people create residual income by working part time from home. www.bethstreet.myrandf.com

It’s an odd time to be alive.

I’m not saying that as a complaint. I’m just pointing out that things just keep getting more and more strange as time passes and it seems that no one really questions the “weird” things that are happening these days. Don’t believe me? Then, please explain the following: 1. Women are now paying big money for their hairdressers to give them gray hair. Gray Hair! Since the early 1900’s women have paid to keep from getting gray hair and now women who don’t have gray hair yet, are paying someone to give it to them. It’s madness, I tell ya. 2. People spend countless hours each day “talking to friends” on “social media”, but do everything possible to avoid any and all personal social interaction with people. In other words, we’d rather die a horrible death than talk on the phone or, God forbid, talk to someone in person, but we’ll spend half the day texting someone. We’ve even accepted the word “people” as a verb. Very few of us seem to be fans of “peopling” anymore. 3. I remember my grandfather making fun of people who paid good money for bottled water, because water is free from fountains everywhere across these United States. Not only are people now paying $5 bucks a bottle for “artisanal mineral” water, now people pay money for satellite radio when they could listen to most any AM or FM station for free. Also people are paying $100 bucks per month to go to a gym and flip tractor tires or walk on a treadmill, when you can walk anywhere you want to go free of charge. I wonder what my grandfather would say about people paying money to run in a race on roads they can run any day of the week for free? 4. People are excited about an app that shows them what they are supposed to look like when they’re old. This is app is apparently owned by the Russians. If you don’t think it’s odd that the Kremlin is interested in owning rights to everyone’s photos, then I don’t know what is, but what’s even more odd is that people are so interested in what they’re going to look like all wrinkled and aged. Give me an app that makes me look like I’m a 20-year-old supermodel, not Granny from the Beverly Hillbillies. 5. As if it weren’t strange enough that a college education now costs the same as a single-family home, how about the fact that Cornell University is currently offering a course in “Tree Climbing”. Don’t think that’s strange? Caltech is offering a class in the study of bubbles, while Michigan State University has a course called, “The Coming Zombie Apocalypse

– Disasters, Catastrophes, and Human Behavior”. Don’t believe me? Google it.

6. Vacations used to consist of a few days at the beach closest to your home. Now, people pay the same amount for a single vacation as they do a nice car and not only that, they now have to worry about contracting flesh-eating bacteria from the ocean while they’re there. You have to admit, it’s pretty bizarre. 7. After we finally became educated to the hazards of smoking cigarettes, some idiot invented the “vape pen” and billed it as a healthier alternative to cigarettes. The crazy part? People believed it, so now instead of a generation addicted to cigarettes, we have a generation addicted to something equally as bad, if not worse. And not only is it hazardous to their health, they look like they’re walking around in a cloud playing a piccolo. 8. We’ve all told our kids not to talk to strangers and DEFINITELY never get into a car with a stranger, but we think nothing of calling an Uber or Lyft driven by a stranger. It’s as if we think that paying the stranger for a ride makes it somehow safer. 9. Remember when people only needed one wedding? Now, as if it weren’t expensive enough to pay for the first one, people are “renewing their vows” to celebrate their anniversaries. I could understand paying for another wedding if the first one didn’t take, but why on earth would anyone want to plan and pay for another wedding to the same person if the first one is still valid? It’s very peculiar to me. I can think of plenty of other, less expensive, less annoying photo opportunities. 10. Nowadays everyone listens to the “polls”. All news outlets refer to this poll or that poll and these polls are supposed to determine how the majority of people feel about a certain subject. But never once have I been polled for my opinion on anything. So, who in the world is behind these polls and who in the heck are they polling anyway? Maybe these things don’t seem strange to you, but they sure seem strange to me. Before you know it, we’ll be hearing about two-headed aliens living on military bases trying to steal all our governement secrets. Oh wait… Keep it weird, America!

FAQS

WHY ARE WE RENAMING THE TRI-CITIES? We are not renaming the Tri-Cities. In fact, we are not renaming anything at all! We are working to determine a name for a geographic area that has never had a name. Johnson City, Kingsport and Bristol are at the core of that area, which includes many other communities as well. The Tri-Cities will remain the Tri-Cities. Incidentally, there are more than a dozen areas across the country that call themselves “Tri-Cities.” WHY DOES THAT AREA NEED A NAME? Overall growth, particularly population, is stagnant. We need to market

even today. The economic, cultural, and natural health of this place will only increase its appeal. So, what should we call such a dynamic place? Research revealed that the existing regional moniker Tri-Cities was far and away the top choice for a regional name by those who live and work in the region. Appalachian Highlands exists by virtue of being used already by the private sector and received the most favorable ratings for a regional name in the feeder market research and among marketing professionals. Research showed that consumers are more likely to associate scenic beauty, the Appalachian Trail and cultural interests with Appalachian Highlands. Interestingly Tri-Cities provides an association with all things urban and allow the positive associations of Appalachian Highlands to be in the forefront. Based on the research, using both Tri-Cities and Appalachian Highlands – sometimes separately and sometimes together has the best chance at success.

our region to the rest of the world so they can see what a wonderful place this is to visit, live, raise a family, start a business, etc. But we can’t effectively market something if we don’t know what to call it. WHY WOULD WE MARKET THE REGION ANYWAY? WHY WOULDN’T EACH CITY MARKET ITSELF? Because – as cliché as it may sound – we really are stronger together! Each of us has something good to offer. But when you combine our strengths and leverage our assets, we have a ton of great things to offer. From industrial property to housing options, from outdoor recreation to retail developments, from

award-winning education to entrepreneurial opportunities, we literally have it all, together. WHAT IS IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNITY NAMING? The idea of naming a community is simple: use a community’s greatest strength to create a consistent memorable identity that will help propel the town to its desired future. The best identities are grounded in reality but aspirational in vision. They bridge the past and the present with an eye toward the future. They are uncovered and brought to life through a process that unites rather than divides. And they serve the interests of diverse groups within the community with different agendas. vipseenmag.com

allad Health’s plans to develop a new pediatric emergency department at Bristol Regional Medical Center got a boost this week when longtime community members stepped forward to endorse and support this new service for children in Sullivan County and Southwest Virginia. The J.D. “Children and families are our greatest treasures, and we believe by supporting local healthcare, we’re making a substantial difference in their lives,” said J.D. Nicewonder. “It’s a true joy to work in partnership with Ballad Health to bring this new emergency room to Bristol Regional and make this region even better for families.” “As the region’s children’s hospital, Niswonger Children’s Hospital is

establishing carefully planned access points throughout the region where children can receive the care they need, closer to their homes,” said Lisa Carter, president of Niswonger Children’s Hospital and Ballad Health’s vice president of pediatric services. “The quality of care at Bristol Regional Medical Center is excellent, and this will be an important access point to serve the Tennessee and Virginia families in the area.” The new pediatric emergency department is being funded through a $1.2 million gift made in honor of J.D. and Lorraine Nicewonder,

services is a testament to their commitment to transforming local life and health. “This gift is a strong vote of confidence and optimism in Bristol Regional and its future, as well as a sign of appreciation for our hospital,” added Simpson. Unlike an all-ages emergency department, the J.D. Nicewonder Family Pediatric Emergency Department will feature child-friendly décor and furniture, a design feature that includes bright colors and

patterns and continues the Niswonger Children’s Hospital motif of kites and hot air balloons. The gift also made it possible for Ballad Health to offer child life specialists in the emergency department, who will help children cope with the stress of their visit and better understand their treatment. “The child life team is a brand-new addition to Bristol Regional, and it’s a significant layer of support for children when they’re in the hospital,” Carter said. “Their specialized presence, along with our other children’s health experts, will ensure we’re providing Niswonger Children’s Hospital-quality care and elevating the level pediatric services in Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia.” The J.D. Nicewonder Family Pediatric Emergency Room will be part of a regional system of care for children that includes a pediatric emergency room in Kingsport and pediatric surgical and trauma services at Niswonger Children’s Hospital in Johnson City. The network aligns trauma services and hospital emergency rooms to ensure patients receive timely, appropriate care, and it will link all Ballad Health emergency rooms to Niswonger Children’s Hospital via telemedicine capabilities. “We are so grateful to the Nicewonder family for their generosity, which will save and improve lives throughout the Appalachian Highlands,” said Greg Neal, chief executive officer of Bristol Regional Medical Center and president of Ballad Health’s northeast market. “The Nicewonders have been supporters of Bristol Regional for years, and their longstanding philanthropy is once again enabling this hospital to bring leading-edge healthcare capabilities to our community.” Children who need further care will have a seamless transition to Niswonger Children’s Hospital’s main campus, which offers state-of-the-art pediatric care in a family-oriented environment and more than a dozen pediatric specialists. Construction will begin after the ground breaking, which is set for this fall, and is expected to take several months.
