RECOGNIZE THE SIGNS OF HEARING LOSS
Hearing loss can happen to anyone. Today more than 38 million Americans have some degree of hearing loss. Here are some of the signs to watch for yourself or your loved ones that could indicate hearing loss: • Some people can sound like they are mumbling. Does that sound familiar? • Difficulty hearing friends or family on the telephone is another sign of hearing loss. • Family and friends start to comment that the TV is too loud—and they are not just talking about the commercials. • Sometimes, those with hearing loss misunderstand what people are saying, causing some ideas, sentences or thoughts to not make sense. • Hearing loss can make it difficult to focus on and follow conversations. Have you noticed this happening for yourself or a loved one? • Exhaustion or headaches at the end of a day can be another sign. This may be caused by the extra work it takes to hear the surroundings. • Difficulty following a conversation if two or more people are talking at once can be another symptom. • Noisy environments can create further difficulty hearing conversations. If you notice that it’s no longer a pleasure to eat out at loud restaurants or bars, this could be the reason. • Women and children’s voices can be particularly hard to hear. Remember, hearing loss occurs gradually. It’s not unusual for people to accommodate and ignore these signs. If more than two or three of the following scenarios apply to you or someone you care about, it would be a good idea to get your hearing tested. Make every day count: see a hearing care professional today and take back control of your life.
Hearing Loss is More Noticeable Than a Hearing Aid. Comparable in size to that of a paperclip.

The August Medical Issue is always one of my favorite issues. I believe the reason behind that is because it allows me to take a closer look at our incredible medical community and the advances being made year after year. Just like everything else in life, medical science is changing and advancing on a daily basis. We are very fortunate to be surrounded by the level of skill and expertise we have right here in our region.

Being a mom to a little one again has heightened the importance of needing great healthcare options. Not only for our precious Jackson James, but for Mickey and myself as well. We are highly aware that we are not the youngest parents on the block and it is very important to us that we are around long enough to see Jackson become a man.

Tri-Cities Stars PHOTOGRAPHY AND STORY BY ERIC DONAHUE
Established in 2009, the annual Dancing with the Tri-Cities Stars competition was founded as a fundraiser for SteppenStone Youth Treatment Services. SteppenStone provides a continuum of treatment programs and a safe, caring environment for boys 13-17 old who have experienced significant trauma, abuse, and/or neglect and have developed emotional and behavioral issues. Services include year-round residential treatment, foster care, adoption, and a fully accredited school. The primary goal of SteppenStone is to help these young men heal and develop skills to become successful, healthy adults. The night of Dancing with the TriCities Stars was a super fun and effective way to support this worthy cause. The night began as dinner was served and a silent auction was held. The dance competition began and couples began to dance the night away to compete and raise money for charity. There was a panel of both celebrity and professional judges who gave a running commentary and had the crowd in stitches as each dance and contestant was judged on a ten-point scale in multiple categories. Dessert was served during intermission and then the competition commenced to round two. As spectators watched, in breathtaking amazement at times, it became very apparent how much effort each and every dancer had put into both learning the moves, but also preparing themselves physically for the competition. What a great example of hard work and efforts paying off! The show was fantastic. This year’s winners were: Stefanie Roberts – Female Winner and Shining Star Award, Jameer Chester – Male Winner, Brian Griffith – People’ Choice Winner, and Angela Vachon – Shining Star Winner Congratulations to all for a magnificent night of love, charity, competition, sportsmanship, generosity, community support, great food and good times.

Freedom Hall Pepsi Independence Day Fireworks PHOTOGRAPHY AND STORY BY CRYSTAL DAWN CARTER
The 32nd Annual Freedom Hall Pepsi Independence Day Fireworks didn’t let a little rain on the Fourth of July stop all the fun. Rain and sunshine kept those attending guessing about the weather, but still having a ton of fun.
With lots of patriotic pride, The Jonesborough Days Parade was held on Saturday morning, July 1st. Floats, tractors, a high school band, pageant participants, and community organizations paraded through the streets of Jonesborough to waves and cheers from the crowds. The parades ended up on Main Street and the crowd followed the parade to enjoy the activities available: Discovery Days for the children, rides, food, and of course, shopping for arts & crafts! Many people traveled from other cities and out of state to be a part of this festive weekend in Jonesborough, Tennessee!
Crowds gathered to hear local artist Ashley Tragler and her band perform. Ashley was being cheered on by her father, radio personality Marc Tragler, who joined Sara Diamond to emcee the events of the night. Austin Moody and Jimbo Whaley also performed, and Elizabeth Painter gave a special presentation and salute to the troops. The fireworks show was just under 30 minutes of beautiful colors bursting high throughout the city, and for those not on the grounds of Freedom Hall, the music accompaniment could be heard on country station WXBQ.

Put the Squeeze on Summer…with Lemons! RECIPE DEVELOPMENT, FOOD STYLING, PHOTOGRAPHY AND ARTICLE BY LIZ BUSHONG
P
ucker up! It’s summer time and just thinking about a lemon and anticipating the sour-tart twinge automatically makes your taste buds stand at attention. Your mouth begins to salivate as you place the lemon slice to your lips; then and all of a sudden the sour taste becomes a sweet sensation. That is why we love lemons they are sweet and sour all in one citrus bite! Try these lemony recipes for the hottest days of summer, Coconut Lemonade, Lemon Cooler Cookies and Lemon Pound Cake served with fresh strawberries and whipped cream. Nothing tastes better than a tall glass of fresh squeezed lemonade on a hot and humid summer day. For a different twist to the old fashioned lemonade add a dash of coconut extract. The extract does a great job developing the nutty but subtle flavor in this lemonade. This beverage will take you off into the sunset, as if you are lounging in the tropics but you don’t have to leave your backyard to get this coconut infused lemonade, just relax on the porch swing and sip away. Lemon Cooler Cookies are small cookies with a punch of lemon flavor. The lemony little cookie is dusted with two coats of confectioner sugar, once right out of the oven and then again before serving. These two-bite wonders will melt in your mouth, leaving you a sweet sunburst of lemon; perfect for a tea party, picnics, reunions and any time you want a special treat for yourself. A little lemon juice makes everything taste better is the perfect sentiment for the Lemon Pound Cake. Fresh lemon simple syrup is drizzled over the warm cake making this pound cake extra lemon-delicious. The cake is baked in a small fluted pan giving you enough batter for two mini loaves

to freeze for future servings or gift giving. Because this cake has a firm consistency aka pound cake, it is a great recipe for strawberry short cake with fresh whipped cream. A cool refreshing glass of coconut lemonade would complement the cake and berries. There are many health and beauty benefits for ingesting or using lemons. According to the American Urological Association and Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases, lemons assist with indigestion, fevers, and dental hygiene. On the beauty side, lemons improve the shine on your hair and acts as anti-aging remedy. Lemons will fade the scars of old burns for they are antiseptic, even the smell of fresh cut lemons reduce stress. Lemons are rich in vitamin C, B6 and thiamin, copper, calcium and help reduce weight by drinking lemon water. There are so many benefits of using lemons that it’s overwhelming to list them all. “A good practice is to eat anywhere from a quarter to a half of a lemon per day to get the maximum benefit of this powerful little fruit.” Of course eating pound cake and cookies, even though they contain lemon, is not a test and tried benefit to ones health. As with most things that we consume it’s all about moderation so we can enjoy the best flavors of life. Lemons are one of those wonderful flavors we should enjoy. Need a few quick lemon centerpiece ideas for summer entertaining? Create a beautiful impromptu centerpiece by layering slices of lemons in a glass urn. Line the center of the urn with a smaller glass and fill with cold water, add sunflowers or blue hydrangea for a stunning bright centerpiece. Another idea for lemons as part of your table-scape is to pair lemons with golden yellow placemats, red and white checked napkins, white dinner
plates and a basket filled with potted red geraniums. Insert whole lemons on skewers to stand in the geranium arrangement. Fresh strawberries at each place setting would be a great way to entice guests to your table. Setting a pretty table doesn’t have to be difficult, just think about using lemons and in this case red like the strawberries and geraniums that compliment yellow on the color wheel. Here is a helpful tip, gently roll the lemon on the counter or table before using and you will generate a lemon scent without cutting into the lemon. The Lemon Pound Cake on a white ruffled cake stand could be an edible centerpiece. Simply garnish the cake with whipped cream swirls, lemon zest and one fanned strawberry for the center of the cake. This dessert centerpiece will make a statement without the effort. Even a large white bowl filled with lemons is an impressive simple and not-to-expensive arrangement for a table, kitchen counter, or bedside table.

In case you haven’t noticed, the Grindstaff Ford Dealership in Elizabethton has a whole new look! To celebrate, Steve and Ashley Grindstaff hosted an Open House and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on June 15th. This remodel is more than a face lift–it’s a whole new state-of-the-art facility designed to show off the best Ford has to offer. This is the only Ford dealership in the entire region that has upgraded to the new look and design. Walking in, you immediately notice the open-air freshness and are welcomed by their friendly staff. The showroom is also designed to offer a car buying experience that is second to none while consuming as little amount of paper as possible. Who does that? Grindstaff Ford does! That is what you will find when visiting them. A family owned business feel, a sincere welcome, and an atmosphere that will put you at ease.

On June 8th, the Johnson City Chamber held their afterhours reception at V’s Vietnamese on State of Franklin. V’s Vietnamese is located beside the new Food City. If you have not already done so, you should check them out. Their promise is that the food will always be authentic, fresh, and healthy. In keeping with traditional Vietnamese food, the menu consists of mostly vegetables. Meat and protein are available as well. Most of the vegetables are purchased from local area farmers markets to provide their customers with the most flavor and health benefits possible.Freddy ’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers, located in the same shopping center, served frozen custard. Chamber After Hours allow local business professionals an opportunity to meet, network, and create professional relationships outside the normal workday hours. Together we all achieve more. The Johnson City Chamber of Commerce and its members are a very positive group of men and women serving the purpose of making everyone better and business stronger. Get Involved! See your local Chamber of Commerce for details.
Who doesn’t like a good pie? It seems like everyone born and raised in Tennessee, or really anywhere, has a love for them. Yet nobody has opened a store worthy enough to be centered around them. Not until now. Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop just recently opened its doors to the public right in time for July and Independence Day. Located off of People’s Street in Johnson City, right in-between Barberitos and Menchies, they serve delicious fresh made pies, southern style. To celebrate their grand opening, they gave away free ice cream, hired a band to play live music, and had a face painting booth for the kids. The staff trained behind closed doors for two weeks prior to opening; learning how to perfect the difficult art of pie baking. Every single staff member seemed to absolutely love their job, greeting everyone with a smile; working hard with a purpose. While pies are the focus, Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop also offers a number of other things, including comfortable and stylish merchandise such as t-shirts and hats. Overall, it’s an awesome, unique, and a tasty addition to the growing and evolving community of Johnson City that shows off its uniqueness while sticking to the roots of Tennessee’s southern culture.

Kingsport’s July 4th Celebration PHOTOGRAPHY AND STORY BY LINDA COFFEY
Kingsport celebrated its 100th Fourth of July in Downtown Kingsport on the 4th! People started arriving early and setting up chairs, blankets, and even canopy’s in the areas surrounding downtown. Children played games, everyone strolled the streets checking out the food trucks and their variety of offerings. Josh Smith (WJHL) greeted the crowd and the Symphony of the Mountains began their warm up, which gave the crowd a glimpse of how great the concert would be for the event! Prior to the orchestra, a DJ got the crowd up and dancing, but the dancing may have led to rain showers! Everyone huddled under umbrellas or in store fronts and waited for the rains to pass. Children especially seemed to enjoy running through the rain and getting soaked!
CORNELIA ORTH, CONDUCTOR
CARLA KARST AND MORGAN KING
After the rain passed, the symphony concert began with local artists, Carla Karst, Clark Parker and Andrew Kramer entertaining the crowd. During intermission, a brand new Honda Civic was awarded to a lucky winner! The evening concluded with fireworks lighting up the sky in coordination with the Symphony of the Mountains playing the famous 1812 Overtures and Stars and Stripes Forever. It was a grand celebration of the centennial of Kingsport and the freedoms of our country! The Raymond McLain and family wrote a song for Kingsport’s Centennial called “Beautiful Kingsport” that premiered at the event.

If the name sounds familiar, it is because it belongs to renowned Cuban roller Hamlet Paredes, who has been known for his custom rolled Cuban cigars. Paredes began his career as an in-store roller at two different factories in Cuba: Briones Montoto, the old Romeo y Julieta factory, and more recently La Casa del Habano at the old Partagás factory. In 2015, Paredes began working with Rocky Patel and originated his own cigar line called the Tabaquero. Patrons of the Libation Station and Ligero Cigar Lounge got to experience his cigar rolling ability first hand at their event featuring hand rolled cigars made to order by Paredes. The event was co-sponsored by Rocky Patel. Food and drinks were provided. For more information about similar events visit their Libation Station facebook page. You will not be disappointed.

Wellmont CVA Heart Institute
CHANGING LIVES. ONE HEART AT A TIME.
W
hen it comes to your heart, quality matters. At the Wellmont CVA Heart Institute, our physicians and staff, as well as emergency medical services and highly trained caregivers, work together to provide the region’s most robust heart, stroke and vascular care.
From special clinics and screenings that identify developing or existing heart, vascular and valve conditions, to advanced minimally invasive treatment options, the heart institute provides a full range of surgical and nonsurgical cardiovascular services to treat: • Heart disease • Vascular disease • Structural heart disease • Irregular heart rhythms • Congestive heart failure
LEADING-EDGE INNOVATION AND CARE The heart institute has long been at the nation’s forefront of breakthrough cardiovascular technology and treatments.
Absorb bioabsorbable stents clear blockages in heart arteries – then eventually dissolve and leave no trace they were ever inserted. The heart institute was one of the first sites in the nation – and the only group in the region – approved to use Absorb when it first became available. Our research program was also instrumental in securing FDA approval for the stents, as we were the No. 1 and No. 2 enroller in clinical trials. Advanced cardiac imaging facilitates accurate, non-invasive diagnoses through our complete suite of radiology technology.
HeartSHAPE® coronary calcium scoring tests take less than five minutes to detect heart disease in an early stage, thereby potentially preventing heart attacks. HeartSUCCESS focuses on improving heart failure patients’ quality of life, while minimizing overall cost and coordinating post-discharge care to keep them from needing additional hospital readmissions. Level One Heart Attack Network empowers and equips local emergency medical services agencies, so patients can receive quality heart attack care before they even arrive at the hospital. This dramatically reduces the time it takes to restore blood flow to a blocked artery and increases the likelihood for a full recovery. Peripheral vascular disease services include the region’s most comprehensive endovascular and vascular surgical care. Transcatheter aortic valve replacement can be a lifesaving surgery for patients with severe aortic stenosis who aren’t candidates for open-heart surgery. The heart institute was one of the first 50 sites in the United States to offer this procedure. World-renowned research program has enabled our physicians to share their expertise with national and international audiences. In fact, we’ve been published three times in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine since 2015.

STORY BY ASHLEA RAMEY WELLMONT HEALTH SYSTEM
Wellmont Health System:
Pet therapy contributes positively to patient care
H
as health care gone to the dogs? At Holston Valley Medical Center, that certainly seems to be the case – but in the most positive way possible. Through the hospital’s volunteer pet therapy service, dog owners and their best friends routinely visit Holston Valley and bring joy to patients, employees and hospital visitors. “The program has been so good for our patients,” said Karen Fox, manager of Holston Valley’s volunteer services department. “One of our stroke patients, who had not spoken in days, had a visit from a therapy dog. The owner was telling the patient the dog’s name and immediately the patient looked up and, much to the surprise of family and medical staff, repeated the name back to the owner. These dogs have also comforted children afraid of needles and those who are simply down and out.” The pet therapy program began in 2003 and was revived in 2010 at the request of a physician who felt patients greatly benefited from the presence of the animals. And for the last six and half years, these four-legged friends have been lifting the spirits of everyone they see. With 79 volunteers and 73 dogs currently in the program, Holston Valley has one of the largest volunteer pet therapy programs in the region. Studies have confirmed what people have known for years: therapy dogs help people physically, emotionally and socially. Some of the benefits include comfort and happiness, as well as decreased stress, anxiety, blood pressure and heart rate, unconditional love and lifting

patients’ spirits while contributing to the healing process of those who have been hospitalized. Upon seeing the positive effects the dogs have on patients, clinical leaders and nurses often request pet therapy for patients who are depressed, lonely or just need help relaxing. Freddy, Litzi and Patches, along with their owners, are just a few of the hospital’s pet therapy team who visit patients and their families a few times each week in hopes of making their days a little brighter. Pet therapy dogs are recognized by the red bandanas around their necks, which show interaction with them is acceptable. Everyone is encouraged to pet, hug and love on the dogs. “These dogs are part of a healing environment, and we appreciate the opportunity to play a role in assisting the hospital’s patients,” said Susan Bowers, special events coordinator for Holston Valley’s pet therapy program. “Patients usually do not know when therapy dogs will be visiting them, leaving an element of surprise and providing a welcome distraction from the anxiety of visiting a hospital.” And during all major holidays, the pet therapy team is still on the job bringing company and comfort to anyone in the hospital, especially those who are missing the time with their families and loved ones. The dogs even get into the holiday spirit by dressing up for Christmas, Easter, Halloween and other holidays. Doug Strickland, M.D., a gastroenterologist, said, “Wherever the therapy dogs are, you see smiles. I have
seen them in the lobby, the hallways of the hospital and in patient rooms – every time, people light up, and the dogs’ tails are wagging. Even a brief time with these loving animals can help decrease stress and be uplifting.” While the therapy dogs and handlers are focused on patients, the effect they have on staff is equally powerful. In an environment where most days can be rewarding but stressful, employees are always eager to take a few minutes from the hectic demands of their job to recharge with some of their furry friends. All breeds are welcome in the therapy program after undergoing special training and certification through Therapy Dogs International and receiving all necessary immunizations. Their owners are also registered as hospital volunteers and must complete orientation. The pet therapy team works together to ensure a group of volunteers visits the hospital at least three to four days every week. Tim Attebery, president of Holston Valley Medical Center, agrees with Fox and other experts. “The pet therapy program at Holston Valley is an important part of our patient experience. Scientific research has proven patients experience a nearly immediate physiological and psychological benefit from a visit from the pet volunteers. There’s something truly unique about the ability of a dog to make almost anyone feel better and get their mind off their illness and pain. The old saying is that dogs are man’s best friends, and our pet volunteers certainly live up to that. I greatly appreciate the dedication and personal sacrifice from the human owners and handlers. We love it when the dogs are in-house. I can’t imagine operating this hospital without the pet volunteers.” These four-legged friends and their owners, with their dedication, compassion and enthusiasm, are helping patients have a better health care experience, happier holidays or take just a moment to smile and enjoy life.

Highlands Neurosurgery
DID YOU KNOW? N
eurosurgeons do a lot more than brain surgery. In fact, about 70 percent of a neurosurgeon’s time is devoted to your spine. Neurosurgeons treat many painful spinal conditions including pinched nerves, herniated discs, and degenerative disc disease in both the neck and back. These conditions may manifest in one place but felt by the patient in another. For example, symptoms of arm pain or weakness may be related to spinal disc problems in the neck.
Although neurosurgeons can perform complicated surgical procedures in the spine and brain, it’s often nonsurgical care that is prescribed. Diagnosing your condition and coming up with an appropriate treatment plan is the first priority. For example, back pain may be treated with conservative modalities such as anti-inflammatory drugs, physical therapy and other non-surgical means. If your condition has progressed past these types of treatment, and if surgery is indicated, a neurosurgeon can perform the necessary spinal procedure.
DEDICATED TO SUPPORTING YOUR ACTIVE LIFESTYLE Highlands Neurosurgery, PC has been serving the Tri-Cities region with the highest quality, state-of-the-art services available in clinical neurosurgery since 2001, when it was founded by Dr. Travis Burt and Dr. Matthew Wood. Dr. Jody Helms joined the practice in 2010 and more recently, Dr. Drew Rice joined the group to meet the growing needs of the community. The nationally recognized physician team at Highlands Neurosurgery performs a variety of complex procedures. These include spinal and intracranial surgery, as well as microsurgical and minimally invasive techniques, designed to treat a broad spectrum of spinal conditions resulting from injury, disease and degenerative processes. The practice is home to the only neurosurgeons in the area who are involved in robotic radiosurgery (CyberKnife and TruBeam STx with Brainlab) for the treatment of life-threatening tumors of the brain and spine that would otherwise be inoperable. This same technology is also used to treat trigeminal neuralgia. Highlands Neurosurgery is highly regarded for providing patients with the most up-to-date, effective surgical treatments available for back and neck conditions, as well. The professionals at Highlands Neurosurgery understand that recovery is a high priority and they are dedicated to helping their patients return to optimal physical function while minimizing pain and discomfort. All of the group’s neurosurgeons are board certified (or eligible) by the American Board of Neurological Surgeons and actively participate in maintenance of certification activities. They are members of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons as well as the Congress of Neurological Surgeons. Highlands Neurosurgery accepts new patients by physician referral and patients may self-refer when their individual insurance plans do not require physician referral. Individuals who have been advised to have spine surgery but desire a second opinion may also schedule a consultation.

DID YOU KNOW? P
lasma is the clear, liquid portion of blood containing proteins and antibodies. Plasma is composed of mostly water (90%) and a mixture of proteins and antibodies (10%) that are vital to the body’s ability to maintain critical functions such as controlling bleeding and fighting infections. Without enough of these proteins, a person could have a life-threatening illness such as an immune deficiency, genetic emphysema, or hemophilia. The number of proteins in a single donation is so few that one donation is insufficient for even one treatment dose. In fact, it takes anywhere from 130 to 1200 donations to treat one patient for just one year. Additionally, the production of plasma medicines is lengthy and complex, taking up to 12 months from the time a donation is made until the medicine is ready to be used by patients.
HOW WE CAN HELP. Plasma is donated through a process called plasmapheresis, which involves the return of red blood cells to the donor after separating the plasma from the whole blood. This process is more time consuming than whole blood donation but provides the opportunity for more frequent safe donations. Plasma donors can give twice a week but there must be two days between each donation. Plasma donors are compensated for their time because we realize there is a commitment involved in being a regular plasma donor. Thanks to our donors’ generosity, Grifols is able to produce plasma medicines that help treat those suffering from rare and chronic conditions. These medicines help give people around the world the chance for more productive and healthier lives. Most patients require regular and life-long treatment with these medicines.

nlike more traditional braces and retainers, Invisalign is a virtually invisible method of straightening your teeth. By having removable aligners custom-made specifically for your teeth, the aligners are removed when eating and brushing to maintain good oral hygiene. Invisalign is also comfortable to wear with no metal brackets and wires that could potentially irritate your mouth and gums. As you replace each aligner every two weeks, your teeth will move little by little, week by week, gradually moving towards the projected final position. Invisalign is designed for both teens and adults to transform smiles. Teens reveal their best smile through a unique treatment development just for them, while adults get the smile they’ve always imagined without putting their lives on hold. Comfortable, clear and removable- Invisalign transforms your smile without disrupting your life.

Prestige Aesthetics
DID YOU KNOW? If someone told you it was possible to look younger, reduce your wrinkles, improve the tone and texture of your skin, without anyone knowing what you’d done, would you believe them? Probably not, or at least you’d be skeptical. Wendy Wilgus, FNP, owner of Prestige Aesthetics says it is definitely possible. According to a survey done by Galderma, the maker of the dermal filler Restylane, the number one reason given for not having dermal fillers injected was the fear of looking overdone. But just because you are being injected does not mean you have to look like you are! Injections can be placed where they can create a more natural look, rather than a look that appears overdone. “I always tell clients that I want others to notice their makeup, or that they look refreshed–similar to having a good night’s sleep or returning from a restful vacation,” says Wendy. “People can tell that something looks different, but they can’t put their finger on it.”
HOW WE CAN HELP. There are many options for injectables to give you the look you desire. For example, the Restylane family of fillers has five different options to meet each individual’s needs. “Restylane Lyft can be placed in the midface to restore volume. It is very thick and creates a youthful cheek. Restylane Silk, though, is very soft, and can be used to soften lip lines and other fine wrinkles. Using both fillers together in these specific areas creates a very natural look.”

Wendy Wilgus graduated from Belmont University with a BSN in 2001, and then went on to receive her Masters Degree in Nursing from Duke University in 2006. She is the owner of Prestige Aesthetics. She began her medical career as a nurse in the neonatal intensive care unit where she worked for five years and attended graduate school part-time. Upon graduation from Duke, she began working in primary care in Elizabethton, TN where she stayed for three years. She then moved on to caring for the veteran population at the Mountain Home VA Medical Center in the surgery department. During this time she developed a knowledge of vascular problems and joined Dr. Paul Brown’s mission team to Mexico. She gained certification in sclerotherapy as a result and performed many procedures on her trips. As a result, Wendy developed a love for aesthetics and opened Prestige Aesthetics, a full-service medical spa in Johnson City, which has been operating since 2013.

Dr. Jeff Hopland graduated from Quillen College of Medicine in 1994 and is board certified in Family Practice. In addition to medical director for Medical Care, PLLC and Amedysis Hospice, he is also the supervising physician for Prestige Aesthetics, a full-service medical spa in Johnson City. Although he mainly cares for medical patients, he also has an interest in platelet rich plasma (PRP) therapy. PRP therapy uses the patient’s own blood to stimulate a healing process in the tissues which it is injected. This procedure was first developed in 1987 for orthopedic use, but it has gained popularity in recent years for its cosmetic uses. During his training for PRP in 2013, Dr. Hopland developed an interest in other medical uses for PRP and began to implement them into his practice. He has had much success treating shoulder and knee pain, as well as sexual dysfunction and achieving increased hair growth.

DID YOU KNOW? T
here are two main types of scoliosis (curvature of the spine greater than 10°) in adults: Adult Idiopathic Scoliosis and Adult Degenerative Scoliosis. Adult Idiopathic Scoliosis is, in essence, a continuation of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. Sometimes a spine curvature of an idiopathic (cause not known) nature that began during teenage years may progress during adult life. Curves may increase in size 0.5° to 2° per year. Adolescent curves less than 30° are unlikely to progress significantly into adulthood, while those over 50° are likely to get bigger, which is why adult scoliosis specialists should monitor the curves over time. Adult Degenerative Scoliosis: Also known as de novo (new) scoliosis. This type of scoliosis begins in the adult patient due to degeneration of the discs, arthritis of the facet joints and collapse and wedging of the disc spaces. In addition, Hyperkyphosis (larger-than-normal forward bend in the upper back) affects a significant percentage of older adults. All three types of spinal deformities can cause significant back pain, numbness, shooting pain in lower extremities and fatigue.
HOW WE CAN HELP. Excel offers several spinal bracing options to address scoliosis, hyperkyphosis, and spinal deformities. We are the Tri-cities’ regional provider for the SpineCor® Adult Pain Relief Back Brace. SpineCor® is a soft, dynamic spinal orthosis that provides gentle corrective forces specific to curve characteristics. SpineCor® does not immobilize or limit range-of-motion and muscle activity, therefore, patients use their own muscles for stability and experience no muscle atrophy (or wasting). SpineCor® is used for neuromuscular retraining to maintain posture improvements when not wearing the brace. SpineCor® is a lightweight, breathable brace that can be worn under clothing undetected. Contact our Kingsport or Johnson City offices to find out more information.

DID YOU KNOW? RELOOK. RETHINK. REIMAGINE. IT’S TIME TO TAKE A CLOSER LOOK. BOTOX® Cosmetic is FDA-approved for the treatment of fine lines and wrinkles, and is extremely effective at easing the over-contracted muscles that cause surface skin to look old or stressed. Placed strategically by our skilled injectors, Botox can also gently lift the lower third of the face, the usual target of the surgical face lift. A Botox treatment typically consists of several small injections. It works by temporarily weakening the treated muscles so that the skin relaxes and facial wrinkles and lines become less noticeable. Results can be seen in 4-10 days and can last 4 to 6 months. Botox improves frown lines, glabellar lines (vertical furrows between the eyes), lines on the bridge of the nose, horizontal lines on the forehead, crow’s feet around the eyes, or bands on the neck.
HOW WE CAN HELP. Mountain Region Family Medicine provides statelicensed, CLIA certified laboratory services to our patients at all of our locations. By offering these services in-house MRFM is able to offer short waiting times for specimen collection and cost effective testing for our patients. Our team of dedicated medical professionals work efficiently to minimize your waiting time for test results and, in many instances, provide same day results. MRFM Laboratory Services provides a large variety of comprehensive chemistry testing as well as specialized tests. Monika Karakattu, M.D. BEWITCHED BY THE SOUTHERN CHARM Dr. Monika Karakattu embarks on a new journey in Kingsport to join MRFM “Any bad day can be fixed by driving down the southern country roads, windows down with the country music up and a smidge of southern hospitality. And it was that southern charm that brought me to my adopted home in Kingsport” says Dr. Monika Karakattu who has been a resident of the garden city for past 8 years and is currently accepting patients at Mountain Region Family Medicine at their Press building location, downtown Kingsport at 444 Clinchfield Street, Suite 2700, telephone 423-230-2700. An Indian by birth, Dr. Monika comes from a land which in the core of its culture beholds “Be one for whom the guest is God” as its raison d’être. It’s this cultural comparability that draws in a kinship towards Kingsport for Dr. Monika having practiced earlier in Lee County, Virginia too. She attained pre-med and medical degree from the esteemed Grant Medical College in the multi-faceted city of Mumbai. Dr. Monika completed her residency from East Tennessee State University Bristol Family Practice in 2011. This highly accomplished doctor, in addition to being a discernible congregant at St. Dominic Catholic Church, is also a recipient of the “100% Child Immunization” award from the State of Virginia. She is a member of the American Association of Family Physicians (AAFP) and the American Medical Association (AMA). What’s more is that for all you commercial drivers out there, the good doctor also provides D.O.T. physicals for C.D.L. licenses. This is in addition to being licensed to provide Botox injections from American Association of Facial Aesthetics. Dr. Monika is married to her high school sweetheart, Dr. Sajin Karakattu, an ER doctor at Hawkins County Memorial Hospital. They are the proud parents of two vivacious kids - Neil and Naisha. Little Naisha is a pupil at St Dominic Catholic Church where Dr. Monika partakes in all the parental programs. “There’s an old saying ‘In the south, there are no strangers just friends we haven’t met yet’. I love it that it takes 30 minutes to say goodbye here. And most of all as a doctor I love it that my patients become part of my family sooner or later,” she states. Dr. Monika is quite the linguist with a proficiency in over four languages. In her spare time, she enjoys movies, traveling and most of all spending time with the family. She’s looking forward to devoting herself to the good people of Kingsport, meeting all their medical needs, provide a friendly ear and ensconce herself into this new family of patients.

The local Medical Alliance has given donations recently to three other health-related organizations. One is the Pregnancy Support Center of Johnson County, located in Mountain City. This center supports a program called Healthy Beginnings, with monthly educational classes for moms to earn baby care items and crib mattresses. The center encourages moms-to-be to quit smoking, get off drugs, receive prenatal care, and develop healthy homes. The Alliance also supported the local “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes,” an opportunity for men to raise awareness in the community about the serious causes, effects, and remediation to men’s sexualized violence against women. The Alliance’s other financial assistance went to the Oncology Department and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital affiliate at the Niswonger Children’s Hospital, to help area families with non-traditional needs resulting from a child’s cancer diagnosis and potential displacement from the home for treatment. Past presidents of the local Alliance were also honored at the May luncheon. DID YOU KNOW? D
r. Kathy Sanders and the team at Tri-Cities Center for Cosmetic Dentistry are celebrating 25 years of truly remarkable smiles this year! Dr. Sanders is the only female dentist in the state of Tennessee to have achieved accreditation with the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), the world’s foremost cosmetic dentistry credentialing authority. In fact, she’s one of only 9 dentists in the state of Tennessee (granted in 2006) and one of the 440 dentists to have ever achieved accreditation, worldwide! Since 1999, Dr. Sanders has been awarded the ACE (Approved Continuing Education) award for achieving more than 80 hours of continuing education biannually from the Tennessee Dental Association. Her dedication to the continual refinement of her cosmetic and complex dentistry skills have provided her with extensive continuing education and advanced practicum experience by some of the world’s most-talented cosmetic dentists, as she’s traveled extensively to international conferences to learn from the very best of the best.
HOW WE CAN HELP. For our patients all this education translates into truly remarkable smiles. For years, Charlie Lowe kept putting off the decision to have cosmetic dentistry until one day he finally said, “Enough is enough.” Charlie observed, “Dr. Sanders is absolutely amazing — an artist! There’s nothing half-hearted about her or her dentistry.” says Lowe, smiling from ear to ear. And, he’s right. There is nothing half-hearted about Dr. Kathy Sanders. This year, as she celebrates 25 years of dentistry, there’s a new dental passion for the ever-ambitious Dr. Sanders. She recently added the component of dental sleep medicine to her practice to help those who suffer with sleep disorders.

Doctor Jeremiah Sturgill WHO IS DR. JEREMIAH STURGILL?
D
r. Jeremiah Sturgill grew up in the small town of Big Stone Gap in southwestern Virginia. He knew he wanted to be an orthodontist as a teenager. After seeing how much braces changed his smile, he was inspired to help others achieve similar success through orthodontic treatment. He kicked off his academic journey by attending King University in Bristol, Tennessee on an academic scholarship. He graduated with honors and earned dual degrees in biology and business administration.
Dr. Sturgill’s rigorous training, experience in advanced technology, and commitment to continuing education have provided him with a vast skill set in traditional braces, clear braces, adult braces, Invisalign, orthognathic surgery, cleft palate/craniofacial syndromes, laser dentistry, lingual (hidden) braces, sleep apnea, and TMD/myofascial pain. Moreover, his dedication to patients and their dental health helps people smile in more ways than one. He combines his expert orthodontic skill with thorough communication, professionalism and a zany sense of humor to help patients achieve the orthodontic results they desire while having fun.
After college, Dr. Sturgill went to dental school at Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health, located just outside of Phoenix. Again, he opted for the dual major route getting his Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) and Master of Public Health (MPH) degrees. Dr. Sturgill completed the Postgraduate Orthodontic and Dentofacial Orthopedics Program and graduated with a specialty certificate in orthodontics and a doctorate in health education (DHEd). He was also chosen to participate in implant osseointegration study at Harvard School of Dental Medicine. He wrapped up his training by serving as chief resident for his program and completing rotations at the St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center – Barrow Neurological Institute Cleft and Craniofacial Center. After undergoing the rigorous process of getting board certified, which involved hundreds of additional hours of preparation to show he was able to provide the highest level of patient care, Dr. Sturgill earned the distinction of becoming a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. This honor is bestowed on only 40% of practicing orthodontists. While Dr. Sturgill’s wife, Dr. Riley Sturgill, was attending residency at Virginia Commonwealth University, he joined one of the most prestigious practices in Richmond, Virginia. He was also tapped to join the faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University as an Assistant Professor for the Orthodontic and Dentofacial Orthopedic residency program. He continues to teach aspiring orthodontists the intricacies of straightening the teeth and correcting the bite.
Outside of the office, Dr. Sturgill and his wife enjoy hiking, camping, horseback riding and skiing. They’re also active in their church and have taken mission trips across the globe visiting everywhere from the rainforests of Uganda to the waters of the Amazon River, all the way to the northern villages of the Arctic Circle. In spite of their love of travel and adventure, there’s no place the Sturgills would rather practice than northeast Tennessee and southwest Virginia. It not only provides them the chance to be close to their families; it also grants them the ability to serve the communities they cherish.

HOW WE CAN HELP. Dr. Craig Towers with HIROC and UT Medical Center has been conducting research on opiate detoxification for seven years and says his findings prove treating pregnant mothers is much more effective than treating babies after they’re born. He has helped more than 500 women detox during pregnancy without a loss. Adding a counselor for the behavioral health that is a critical aspect of getting off opiates has helped reduce the relapse numbers now that mothers have personal support and stay in contact with his office for 8 weeks after delivery. Dr. Towers and his work on treating addiction during pregnancy were featured in an in-depth report by CNN. The story, Stopping the Opioid Crisis in the Womb, can be viewed online at www.cnn.com under the Health header.

WHEN TO SEE DR. WESTFALL The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends an orthodontics screening for children by age 7. At this point the teeth and jaws are developed enough so Dr. Westfall can see if there will be any serious bite problems in the future. Most of the time treatment is not necessary at age 7, but it allows for time to watch the patient develop. Dr. Westfall treats adults too! More than 20% of our current patients are adults and that number is increasing each year. Adults who have tolerated dental malfunctions throughout their lives are thrilled with their new smile. Our adult patients realize the value of improved dental health as well as the increased selfesteem derived from a beautiful smile.

olorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer related deaths, but it doesn’t have to be. The American Cancer Society estimates over 135,000 people will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 2017 and over 50,000 deaths will occur in 2017 from this preventable cancer. Colorectal cancer is almost as common among women as men. Lifetime risk for colorectal cancer is 1 in 23 for women and 1 in 21 for men.
Unfortunately, colorectal cancer is often a silent disease that has no symptoms in the early stages of the disease. Prompt evaluation for any of the warning signs allows for detection at an earlier, more treatable and beatable stage. You should not wait for symptoms before talking to your doctor about why screening for colorectal cancer is so important.
WARNING SIGNS FOR COLORECTAL CANCER: • Change in bowel habits • Feeling that your bowel does not empty completely • Diarrhea and/or constipation • Nausea or vomiting • Anemia • Blood in stool (either bright red blood or black, tarry stools) • Constant tiredness, weakness or fatigue • Unexplained weight loss • Persistent abdominal discomfort (pain, cramping, gas, bloating, or feeling of fullness) • If you have Crohn’s or Ulcerative Colitis, you may be at a higher risk
HOW WE CAN HELP. Beginning at age 50, or age 45 for African Americans, all men and women should be screened for colorectal cancer. Screening should begin at an earlier age if you are at high risk or if you are having symptoms. A colonoscopy is considered the gold standard of screening methods for its ability to view the entire colon and both detect and remove polyps during the same procedure. Colon cancer can be prevented by removing the polyps that may become cancerous over time.

1999, The Blum Plum Festival was held for the very first time in Johnson City with the idea to bring awareness to downtown Johnson City and have a whole lot of fun doing it. It was immediately a raging success and this year was no exception. This year ’s festival was held on June 2nd and 3rd in the beautifully designed and landscaped Founders Park. This year ’s festivities included a 5k race, Music, crafts and arts vendors, a kids area, food trucks, sidewalk painting competitions, and even a silent disco. Attendance was up this year and I am certain that the Blue Plum Festival is and will continue to be a highlight of every summer in downtown Johnson City.

Mission trips cost money, and what better way to raise money than a fundraiser? That’s exactly what the students and leaders a part of H.O.P.E. decided to do. H.O.P.E., Helping Our Potential evolve, is the youth group a part of Central Baptist Church located in Kingsport off of Carver street. They have planned a mission trip that is coming up soon, so instead of spending their Saturday with family or dodging the summer heat in a pool, the students and leaders were hard at work packing up orders of meals to pass throughout Kingsport, all with a smile on their face. For a small donation, you receive a box filled with homemade spaghetti, fresh bread, healthy salads, tasty desserts, and an ice cold drink. All the proceeds from the fundraiser will be used for their upcoming trip to Alabama and Mexico. The group will be working with the Salvation Army to help supply the homeless with clothes, toiletries, food, and other basic essentials that we often take for granted. Not only will they help the needy with physical necessities, but they will help change lives by spreading their faith, love, and most importantly, H.O.P.E.

District Press Conference PHOTOGRAPHY AND STORY BY CRYSTAL DAWN CARTER
The First Tennessee Development District Board of Directors representing eight counties gathered for a press conference before their semi-annual meeting and dinner. The announcement and meeting were held at the Tennessee College of Applied Technology in Elizabethton on June 14, 2017. The County Mayors of Carter, Greene, Hancock, Hawkins, Johnson, Unicoi, Sullivan, and Washington Counties announced that the entire region is now officially participating in the ACT Work Ready Communities initiative and is now listed on the Work Ready Communities website. Education, business and government leaders have been participating in ACT sponsored academies to learn how to best utilize this prestigious distinction and gain momentum in their respective areas toward meeting the ACT established goals. ACT allows two years from the official listing on the website to become an ACT Work Ready certified region. Carter County Mayor Leon Humphrey said the initiative is a wonderful regional collaboration. He also said work ready certification will “allow us to ensure we stay connected to doing what it takes to attract the right businesses to our region…and help us to make our current business and industry even stronger.” High school students and adults can earn a National Career Readiness Certificate, which shows employers they have achieved certification in the areas of applied math, graphic literacy and WorkKeys workplace documentation. Washington County Mayor Dan Eldridge said being Work Ready Certified is a great competitive advantage for our region. Currently out of 3,144 counties in the US, only 180 are certified work ready. “We believe we are creating a huge competitive tool in the tool box for all of our economic development and chamber professionals.”

“Monroe at the Mansion,” a literacy luncheon fundraiser benefiting Friends of Allandale and the Literacy Council of Kingsport, Inc., celebrated a fourth book tour appearance by New York Times bestselling author Mary Alice Monroe. Sponsored by Citizens Bank and Seasons for Women, a member of the HMG family of care, the event was held in the Allandale Picnic Pavilion.
As the author’s only tour stop in the region, attendees from all across East Tennessee and neighboring states of North Carolina and Virginia enjoyed a gorgeous afternoon on the Allandale campus. Ticket purchases included a luncheon buffet and hardback copy of the new release Beach House for Rent. Local author Leigh Anne W. Hoover introduced her friend and mentor, and Monroe mesmerized the gathered crowd with back stories to her writing and startling statistics involving the declining number of shorebirds on our beaches. Following an enlightening presentation, Monroe was presented with a framed photo by Deanna Russell, and a book signing concluded the lovely afternoon. Event timing also coincided with Monroe’s newest novel hitting number nine on the New York Times bestseller list, and the gathered crowd eagerly celebrated this exciting news with her in Kingsport!

Families Free has expanded serving families through local recovery courts, DCS, Probation, local detention centers, and self-referrals. Through our growth, Families Free has learned many valuable lessons. The majority of women with a history of substance abuse also have a history of trauma, with both tending to be

generational. This leads to the chaotic lifestyle, which pulls mother and her children down a path of destruction. Families Free carries out its mission through meeting our clients’ needs with evidence based practices. Families Free utilizes a strengths-based practice model delivering services with the principles of the Multi-Systemic Theory (MST). Families Free recognizes that all individuals and families have strengths that can be built upon to affect lasting changes within the individual, family unit, and community. Families Free begins all services with empathic engagement and clinical assessments that identifies strengths, as well as need(s), while maintaining a safe and secure environment.
Values and Beliefs Effective Treatment with evidence based practice also requires a holistic approach that considers all aspects and dimensions of need and healing. At the root of this holistic approach, is an attitude, belief, and practice to honor each client we serve as worthy, valuable human beings that are not only deserving, but capable of maintaining a high quality of life. Families Free has learned that Love Restores and each of our dedicated staff members hold this belief within their heart and this belief manifests in our services to others. Families Free believes that helping individuals is not only a service to our community, but also a social responsibility. It is our purpose to reach the vulnerable, the hurting, and the lost. Families Free exists and continues to grow based on our core and principal belief of honoring each individual’s value and worth.
MISSION
“Strengthening our community through preserving families and restoring relationships…one individual at a time.” JANESSA IS A PROGRAM GRADUATE. SHE IS PICTURED WITH THE 3 CHILDREN.
VISION
“Families Free is a non-profit, faith-based organization* dedicated to making positive impacts on families who are vulnerable, especially those who are affected by incarceration. We are to provide quality; evidence-based services combined with the faith-based principles of compassion, healing and restoration to promote positive lifestyle changes for our communities at-risk and often overlooked population.” “Families Free has helped me come clean from what I thought was my world. I am now, because of Families Free, in full recognition of what turns out to be sobriety meaning the most for me and my family” (Janessa, 2017).

“After starting Families Free, I went to a couple of classes and finally realized that the only thing these women want are for me and my family to be together and happy and healthy, and if it wouldn’t have been for realizing and finally opening up to them and accepting the help they had been trying to give me, I wouldn’t be where I am in my recovery today. They walked with me and held my hand on suboxone management, detox, rehab, and intensive outpatient and never let me feel like I was in this alone. I had all the support I needed through it all” (Amanda, 2017). www.vipseenmag.com | august 2017 103

June 17, 2017 was a hot and humid day in the region, and for several motorcycle enthusiasts, perfect weather to hit the open road and raise money for a worthy cause. The riders gathered at the Walmart parking lot on Fort Henry Drive in Kingsport to sign up and get their commemorative shirt before heading out for a day-long drive to distinct locations in the Tri-Cities. Money raised from the ride went to benefit Tri-cities Military Affairs Council (TCMAC). The organization works as advocates for military and veteran affairs. Several of the board members of TCMAC were riding their bikes, but President Ernie Rumsby stuck with his truck as he followed the bikers to their various stops.

Rumsby says TCMAC serves veterans in any capacity they are able from helping with bills, navigating the VA system, or helping veterans or their families locate employment. This ride was one of a series to benefit TCMAC. Their event for July 15th will also feature a job fair to help those looking for work get paired to veteran friendly companies with openings. The ride concluded with a giveaway of a variety of door prizes donated from various businesses. Anyone that would like more information about the TriCities Military Affairs Council can find out more about the organization and what it does to help veterans just visit their website at tc-mac.org. Healthy Kingsport and Reedy Creek Bicycles hosted their first Walk and Roll event on Friday, June 9th. This event features a 5-mile bike ride through the Greenbelt and Downtown Kingsport or a 1-mile walk through Downtown Kingsport for those who would rather walk than roll! “Last year ’s Family Fun Ride was such a success that we decided to expand it by adding the walking portion and rebranding it to reflect this important, new add-on. The event, formerly known as Family Fun Ride, has been rebranded as Walk and Roll,” says Logan Bailey, Healthy Kingsport coordinator.
Mayor John Clark and members of the Kingsport Board of Mayor and Aldermen attended the event to participate in the physical activity. The walk portion was led by Vice Mayor Mike McIntire. He shared facts about the rich history of Downtown Kingsport, and the walkers shared their own personal memories and stories about the city. Walk and Roll will be held monthly through October. This past June the Mountain Empire Chevy Dealers partnered with Bristol Motor Speedway to host a one-of-a-kind customer appreciation event for loyal Camaro and Corvette owners. A lot of the excitement behind this event was that these Corvette and Camaro owners were finally getting a chance to drive their cars the way they were designed to drive. Fast! The Bristol Motor Speedway prepared three separate courses for the drivers to experience in their own cars, a road course; the drag strip and last, but certainly NOT least, laps around the fastest half mile! Seat Time American Racing School was also set up at the track and had experienced drivers on hand to give rides around the track NASCAR style to anyone brave enough to experience that level of acceleration.

The Mount Carmel Block Party returned with gusto on Saturday, July 8th, 2017 for a night of family fun, entertainment, classic cars, fireworks, and more! The City of Mount Carmel and the Mount Carmel Merchants Association worked with Horizon Credit Union to revive the official Fun Fest Block Party. Mount Carmel had gone without their famous Block Party since 2014. When Horizon Credit Union opened their Mount Carmel branch in April of 2016, the President/CEO Beverly Boling made a commitment at the grand opening to the people of Mount Carmel to return the Mount Carmel Block Party. Beverly described their interest by saying “Horizon Credit Union is designated by the United States Treasury as a Certified Community Development Credit Union and by the National Credit Union Administration as a Low Income Credit Union. Both of these designations allow Horizon Credit Union to reach deeper in the community to serve people of modest means with financial services. In reviving the Mount Carmel Block Party, we knew that it would make a difference in showing that we are committed to the Mount Carmel Community. We believe in the future of Mount Carmel and we want to be a good neighbor. Horizon Credit Union wants to offer financial services to everyone including folks who are challenged with low credit scores. It is about the individual person, we are willing to help people across the bridge to financial success. Whether you have millions or have one dollar, at Horizon Credit Union we are people helping people. We need savers and borrowers to balance the credit union!” This year, the Mount Carmel Block Party took place on Main Street. The block party opened with the Vietnam Veterans presentation of flags and a tribute to the fallen soldiers along with the national anthem. The party featured food vendors from across the region. There was a classic car cruise-in and every participant received an official dash plaque. A Kidz Zone featured Seaweed the Monster and the Giant Slide Bounce House. The Benny Wilson Band headlined the entertainment. Hundred Acres and Six String Sundown were also featured. There were displays of Military and public safety equipment. The evening closed out with an awesome fireworks show.

Some Things Should Stay in the Bucket... I really have no idea where the term “bucket list” originated. I even Googled it and I’m still not sure who came up with it or exactly when everyone in the free world started using the term. However, I do know this – everyone has a bucket list of things they want to do before they die. Thankfully, I’ve crossed several items off my bucket list already. For example, I’ve been to the top of the Eiffel Tower, I saw Elton John in concert, and I trained myself to stop saying “lawn more” instead of lawn mower, just to name a few. Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of awesome adventures still waiting to be crossed off my list – things like writing a book, trying every cheesecake offered at The Cheesecake Factory, and going to Israel, but what I really want to talk about is my “Anti-Bucket” list. What is an Anti-Bucket List? It’s a list of things I hope I never do before I die, or as some might call it, a “Stay In The Bucket List”. Here are a few of my top Anti-Bucket List items:
3 Own one of those scary hairless cats. They creep me out and I hope I never ever see
one in person, much less own one. Hairless pets of any kind freak me out completely.
3 Run a marathon. My life IS a marathon. I also never want to place a 13.1 or 26.2
sticker on my rear car window. I’m AOK with my 0.0 sticker. I was built for comfort, not for speed. Besides, running jostles my innards.
3 Show up to a class or event without pants. I’ve dreamed it would happen for years. I
just hope it never actually does.
3 Sew my own clothes. This is 2017, not the pioneer days. Why would anyone pay $80
to purchase sewing supplies and spend several hours making clothes that you can buy in a store for $20? And let’s be honest, nobody wants to see me wearing anything that I made by hand.
3 Swim with sharks. Why is this even a thing? I’m ready to meet Jesus when my time
comes, but I pray that my life (and death) story isn’t highlighted on Shark Week.
3 Do a Tough Mudder or other similarly ridiculous race. I honestly have no idea why
anyone would want to pay good money to run an obstacle course covered in mud with a couple hundred smelly, sweaty people you do not know.
3 Be featured on any TLC show, especially the show “I Didn’t Know I Was Pregnant”. 3 Run with the bulls. I’d prefer to be on the news for a major accomplishment that does not include being gored.
3 Travel to lands with arctic temperatures. I spent a couple of days in New
York City last Christmas and it was 34 degrees. I seriously thought I would die of hypothermia.
