Letter from the Publisher / AUGUST 2015 FOUNDER/PUBLISHER Angela J. Baker

She Says ...

CREATIVE DIRECTOR Angelica Ares

A little over four years ago, Brian Hullette and I made an agreement to combine our talents and began working tirelessly to introduce VIPSEEN to this wonderful region.

It is with great pride that I announce my next business endeavor with TruLife Realty (soon to be rebranded as Conservus Real Estate Group) and Patterson Homes. I will be joining the ownership group. Together we will strive to be pioneers - helping to change the face of the real estate in our region.

Over the course of four years, we, along with our team, have accomplished many things together. From serving on boards and committees to supporting well over 100 local nonprofits through advertising and event coverage, we have had the opportunity to meet and form relationships with incredible people such as you. As we continue towards our fifth year, there are some big changes taking place internally. The first change I would like to mention is we have added an additional magazine to our family, GAMETIME. GAMETIME is an East Tennessee State University Athletic Magazine. Unlike VIPSEEN, GAMETIME will be stocked in stores such as Food City and Road Runners Markets for purchase. We are very proud to have partnered with ETSU on this project and look forward to working with them for many years to come. The second change, and the biggest, is Brian Hullette has decided to leave VIPSEEN to begin pursuing his dream of becoming a realtor. We are very supportive of his decision and look forward to watching him thrive in the real estate market. When you see Brian out, be sure to congratulate him and wish him success! Congratulations Brian! VIPSEEN appreciates Brian’s dedication to the brand and the work he put forth that supported the company’s growth. We at VIPSEEN, Inc. wish him the best. For event coverage, sponsorships, distribution, subscriptions and advertising, please feel free to reach out to me directly via e-mail: angela@vipseenmag.com and I will personally see to it that you and your business or organization are taken care of. You may also call our office at 423-398-5321. All of us at VIPSEEN are looking forward to seeing you soon!

Angela J. Baker, Publisher angela@vipseenmag.com

Being one of the founding partners of VIPSEEN has been one of the highlights of my life. Over the last four years, the VIPSEEN team, Angela, and I have labored together to build an exemplary magazine that showcases the inspiring benevolence of our region. As Winston Churchill said, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” In the world we live in, it is easy to become so consumed with vocational and familial responsibilities that this truth can be easily forgotten. However, I have witnessed first hand the philanthropy of individuals, corporations, and communities in the East TN/ Southwest VA region and that experience has left an indelible impression on my life. I consider myself extremely fortunate to have been a narrator for this generosity-large donations, small donations, people serving people, and the amazing volunteers giving their time to help those in need. Shining a light on these wonderful people and their deeds has been such an honor. Words alone cannot express the amount of gratitude I have. Hands-down the most rewarding part of my experience with VIPSEEN has been the friendships I have established with thousands of people across our region from all walks of life. I treasure those friendships and look forward to continuing to grow those relationships. For those of you who know me personally, you know I am a builder and a visionary. I’m always looking for new opportunities to use my personal strengths and abilities to make a difference. I have decided to pursue a new adventure with Patterson Homes and Conservus Real Estate Group, formerly know as TruLife Realty. By becoming a partner with these great organizations, I will be able to be an active participant in the growth of our region and its future; two things I am very passionate about. My role is changing, but you will still see me around-actively involved within the community. Angela and the entire team at VIPSEEN are passionate and dedicated to sharing your commitment to our region with the hope of encouraging others to take action. As they move forward, I am confident that they will continue to communicate inspirational stories of lives changing and the people who make it happen. I want to encourage you to stand with me as I support Angela and the staff at VIPSEEN as they continue to prosper.

WHAT IS

Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation And Why Is It Important? BY: BOB HARSHBARGER, III, PharmD DOCTOR OF PHARMACY FELLOW OF AMERICAN COLLEGE OF APOTHECARIES

Premier Pharmacy’s commitment to

quality and safety is one of the primary reasons healthcare professionals trust us to serve their own patients. This pledge to quality has been confirmed through our accreditation by nationally recognized institutions. Accreditation typically involves an independent organization reviewing a company’s operations to ensure they are meeting the highest standards. These include standards for issues like quality control and patient safety. Premier Pharmacy is making it easier for doctors and patients in the Tri-Cities to choose a compounding pharmacy they know meets the highest quality and safety standards in its profession. Premier Pharmacy earned the Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation Board’s Seal of Accreditation, a service provided by Accreditation Commission for Health Care Inc. (ACHC). LESS THAN 1% OF COMPOUNDING PHARMACIES HAVE EARNED THIS DISTINCTION.

Our new PCAB Accreditation status and our designation as a PCAB Accredited™ compounding pharmacy lets the public know that Premier Pharmacy ranks among the best for quality and safety. The PCAB Seal of Accreditation shows our dedication to protecting our patients by practicing safe, high-quality compounding. With the high volume of prescriptions that are compounded each year, there has been a need for an enhanced, profession-wide system of standards by which each compounding pharmacy can test its quality processes. While compounding pharmacy is regulated by the state, PCAB Accreditation is an even more comprehensive way to ensure a compounding pharmacy is meeting the highest quality and safety standards. To earn PCAB Accreditation, Premier Pharmacy had to complete an extensive application, document its written policies and provide an analysis of its quality procedures that was reviewed by the Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation Board and some of the leading figures in the field of compounding. Next, the pharmacy opened its doors for an extensive on-site inspection led by compounding experts. Only when these stringent evaluations were completed did the Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation Board officially grant Premier Pharmacy the PCAB Seal of Accreditation and the right to use the designation “PCAB Accredited™ compounding pharmacy. We are honored by this new accreditation. It confirms our commitment to providing safe, personalized solutions that meet the medical needs of our patients – and the needs of the healthcare providers in our community who rely on us for these specialized medicines. We believe this will further strengthen the bond of trust between our pharmacy and the Tri-Cities community. You wouldn’t go to an unaccredited hospital, so why go to an unaccredited compounding pharmacy?

Compounding medications is an integral part of the practice of pharmacy and the demand for these customized medications are increasing every year. Yet many people may not even be aware of its role. Compounded medications are prescriptions that are written by physicians, veterinarians and other legally authorized prescribers and prepared for an individual patient by a specially trained pharmacist. Examples of compounded prescriptions are:

About the Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation Board

• When a child needs a smaller dose of a medicine that is only commercially manufactured in adult-size doses. • When a person cannot tolerate the inactive ingredients (such as gluten or sugar) in manufactured medicines. • When a doctor believes a medicine is needed for his or her patient, but a manufacturer has discontinued the medicine for economic reasons. Many pharmacies practice a small degree of compounding, while others specialize in the centuries-old practice.

The Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation Board is a not-for-profit corporation formed by eight national pharmacy organizations that recognized the need for a national standards organization for compounding pharmacy. Together, these leading organizations developed the policies and standards for the practice of compounding pharmacy, as well as the PCAB Accreditation criteria and processes. For more information on PCAB Accreditation, visit the PCAB Web site at www.pcab.org. For more information about Premier Pharmacy, visit www. rxpremier.com

hen most of us think of a doctor we imagine a man or woman in a lab coat, stethoscope wrapped around his/ her neck, and medical file in hand as they rush to and fro from one patient-filled room to another. Rarely, however, do we think of dentists, pharmacists, or chiropractors as doctors but nearly all of these professions require a medical degree or prolonged medical training before anyone is able to practice medicine. We at VIPSEEN understand that those in our community who tirelessly educate themselves in order to aid others do so with a passion for caring that transcends the common, everyday need to help. Many of those who are profiled on the following pages have more than one type of medical degree and years of training. They continue to work at their craft in order to ensure

Why should you see an Allergist? You may be surpised to know that Board Certified and/or Board Educated allergists are specialists who have met the highest level of nationally-recognized standards for education and expertise in the field of allergy, asthma and immunology. All practicing physicians carry medical licensure, which is the minimum requirement to provide medical care. After completing four years of medical school, the allergist then trains for an additional three to four years of residency in internal medicine, pediatrics, or both. An allergist then spends an additional two or three years of  formal training in an academic fellowship program accredited by the ACGME (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education), which is solely dedicated to diagnosing and managing allergic disease, asthma and immunodeficiencies. After all this additional training, the allergist may then elect to achieve Board Certification or become Board Educated from the American Board of Allergy & Immunology–the benchmark of expertise and professionalism in their field and participate in ongoing education and training to maintain their proficiency and certification if applicable. This formal and lengthy education process is necessary to cultivate the expertise required to provide the highest-quality of care for patients with allergies and asthma as these allergists demonstrate their commitment to excellence and expertise in their field, which translates to state-of-the-art, evidence-based care.

THE ALLERGY-ASTHMA CONNECTION You may wonder what allergies and asthma have in common besides making you miserable. A lot, as it turns out. Allergies and asthma often occur together. The same substances that trigger your hay fever symptoms may also cause asthma signs and symptoms, such as shortness of breath, wheezing and chest tightness. This is called allergic asthma or allergy-induced asthma. Certain substances, such as pollen, dust mites and pet dander, are common triggers. In some people, skin or food allergies can cause asthma symptoms. An allergic response occurs when immune system proteins (antibodies) mistakenly identify a harmless substance, such as tree pollen, as an invader. In an attempt to protect your body from the substance, antibodies bind to the allergen. The chemicals released by your immune system lead to allergy signs and symptoms, such as nasal congestion, runny nose, itchy eyes or skin reactions. For some people, this same reaction also affects the lungs and airways, leading to asthma symptoms. Our experienced allergists will evaluate you and customize your personal allergy/asthma treatment based on your medical history and your lifestyle so you can enjoy life.

HEARING SPECIALISTS

NU H EA R IN G D I D YO U K N O W ? HEALTH CONSEQUENCES: There is a growing list of health consequences associated with hearing loss including risk of dementia, falls, hospitalization and diminished physical and mental health overall. Those with a mild hearing loss are twice as likely to develop dementia, and the risk increases with the severity of hearing loss. Depression and isolation are common among those with hearing loss. About 26 million Americans between ages 20 and 69 have high frequency hearing loss due to exposure to loud noises including leisure activities and hobbies. Clinical data shows hearing loss is progressive and long-term outcomes are better with early treatment. HEARING LOSS LINKED TO ACCELERATED BRAIN TISSUE LOSS: Although the brain becomes smaller with age, the shrinkage seems to be fast tracked in older adults with hearing loss according to a recent study by researchers from Johns Hopkins and the National Institute on Aging. Participants in this study with impaired hearing also had significantly more shrinkage in particular regions including the superior, middle, and inferior temporal gyri, the brain structures responsible for processing sound and speech. These structures are not only responsible for sound and language, but the middle and inferior gyri also play roles in memory and sensory integration. They have also been shown to be involved in the early stages of mild and cognitive impairment, and Alzheimer’s disease. Patients in the study were ages 56 to 86.

Red Wine & Your Health BY SAVANNA MCDAVID

M

any people enjoy winding down with a glass of wine after a busy, stressful day at the office. Women often have weekend “wine nights” with friends to relax and catch up with busy girlfriends. Over the years, research has proven that glass of wine has more benefits than just stress relief. Almost all red wines, and a few white wines, are proving to have bigger health benefits than previously thought. The benefits range from helping to slim the waistline to protecting the heart. Like anything else, however, moderation is the key to reaping the benefits from that glass of vino. The most commonly known benefits, of red wine in particular, are the antioxidants that come from the darkly colored grape skins. These antioxidants help to protect the cardiovascular system and boost the immune system much the same as pure dark chocolate (which is a great pairing with red wine). Antioxidants do this by keeping blood vessels flexible; preventing unwanted clotting, not only around the heart but also in the entire body. Be forewarned! Too much alcohol can cause damage to the heart. Some studies have shown that the grapes used in making red wine will lower bad cholesterol levels, in turn preventing further health problems. That isn’t the only possibility though since, thanks to the rich source of resveratrol from the red grape skins, wine can also help diabetics regulate their blood sugar. Research shows that resveratrol may stimulate insulin secretion or activate a protein that regulates insulin. Cancer is a major disease in today’s society, but if you’re a wine drinker there’s good news: red wine has proven to kill damaged cells that could turn into cancer. Enjoy a daily glass with these benefits in mind and the taste of your drink will be that much sweeter. Another benefit of Vino is the waist-slimming effect it can have in some individuals. While resveratrol takes most of the credit for the health benefits, piceatannol, the chemical compound our bodies convert from resveratrol, deserves some credit too. This chemical compound has shown to literally prevent the growth of fat cells. It can also bind to insulin receptors that can actually block the passageway for immature fat cells: great news for all wine drinkers! Keep in mind though, nothing will be as beneficial or can replace a healthy diet and exercise. Moderate wine consumption is beginning to be proven good for a person’s health. But what is “moderate” wine consumption? How much wine a person can drink in one sitting before the health benefits turn into dangers depends on many factors, including the person’s size, age, sex, body stature and general state of health, as well as whether it is being consumed with food or on an empty stomach. Women should generally drink less than men and no one should exceed three glasses a day if it’s the health benefits a person is after.

You wouldn’t go to an unaccredited hospital, so why go to an unaccredited compounding pharmacy? HOW WE CAN HELP Known for creating remarkably beautiful smiles, Dr. Sanders brings hope to those with very complex dental concerns.

(Occlusal dentistry focuses on making sure your bite is correct, giving you a smile that is healthy and comfortable).

What is a complex dental case? A complex case is one that involves a variety of dental concerns (missing teeth, the need for implantsupported over-dentures and hybrid appliances, etc.) and is often more challenging due to coordinating the treatment plan with a team of advanced dental specialists, such as periodontists, endodontists and oral surgeons.

Dr. Sanders is known for her advanced occlusal training, having studied under some of the world s leading cosmetic dentists, going to great lengths to advance her knowledge so that she is able to create smiles that are both beautiful and functional.

Additionally, complex cases require that a dentist be highly proficient in utilizing and interpreting advanced diagnostic imaging technology, all the while possessing a high level of skill in occlusal dentistry.

22 | VIPSEEN | AUGUST 2015

Respected for her proficiency in successfully transforming the smiles of those who were often greatly discouraged, believing there was little hope for their dental health, Dr. Sanders receives numerous referrals from regional dental colleagues, seeking her help for their complex cases.

ACCREDITED MEMBER OF THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF COSMETIC DENTISTRY

DID YOU KNOW? Dr. Sanders is not only an accredited member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry but also a member of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM). They are the leading professional organizations dedicated to the role of dentistry in the management of sleep disordered breathing. Her recent continuing educational experiences have been dedicated to learning the details of sleep medicine and the fabrication of dental sleep devices. In 2005, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine issued an update in practice parameters or patients who suffer from Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). Patients who have been diagnosed with mild to moderate OSA or those patients who do not respond to, are not candidates for, or who fail treatment attempts with a CPAP may be candidates for an oral device.

These appliances must be fitted by a qualified dentist who has been trained in oral health, the temporomandibular joint, dental occlusion and the associated oral structures. Knowing the importance of sleep to both patients’ general health and dental health, we at the Tri-Cities Center for Cosmetic Dentistry are adding the component of dental sleep devices to our available options. A sleep study along with a focus on communication with the patient’s medical provider is needed to determine if someone is a good candidate for using a dental sleep device. Call our office for details.

GET CHILDREN STARTED EARLY Dr Merendino encourages that parents bring their children in at age 3 for what we call a “Happy Visit” where the child can accompany an adult and observe the parent’s dental cleaning. We let the child touch the equipment, ride up and down in the chairs, meet the staff, and just allow them to become familiar with our surroundings because the dental office can be an intimidating environment. We love to make everyone feel comfortable, and we find that children do so much better when they can see an adult have a painless experience. Our goal for this process is to instill confidence and have children enjoy going to the dentist which builds a solid foundation for their oral healthcare for the rest of their lives, and with a staff with more than 85 years combined experience, you can be sure your little one’s teeth are in the right hands. 24 | VIPSEEN | AUGUST 2015

WHAT IS A DENTAL IMPLANT? A dental implant is a small titanium screw that serves as the replacement for the root portion of a missing natural tooth. Dental implants can be placed in either the upper or lower jaws. Due to the biocompatible properties of titanium, a dental implant fuses with the bone and becomes a good anchor for the replacement tooth. Dental implants can be used in solutions for replacing single or multiple missing teeth. HOW MUCH DO DENTAL IMPLANTS COST? The fee for tooth replacement with dental implants depends on several factors, including the number of teeth being replaced and the number of dental implants required to support your replacement teeth. To obtain a specific fee estimate, schedule an appointment with Martin Dentistry. After a thorough diagnostic

examination, Dr. Martin will recommend the treatment plan that is best for you! WILL I BE ABLE TO CHEW WITH THE SAME FORCE AND PRESSURE I USE WITH MY NATURAL TEETH? Yes. Following a brief adaptation period, chewing capacity is comparable to that of natural teeth. . IS THE TREATMENT PAINFUL? Most of our patients are pleasantly surprised that this is a virtually painless procedure, however, as with any surgery, there could be some discomfort. Anesthesia and patient sedation are commonly administered to help reduce any discomfort during the dental implant process. Most patients report that they were much more comfortable following the procedure than they had anticipated.

LEGACY VEIN CENTER

V E I N T R E AT M E N T

C O M M O N M Y T H S A N D M I S U N D E R S TA N D I N G S MYTH: Spider veins are the same thing as varicose veins. TRUTH: Both varicose and spider veins are caused by hemodynamic dysfunctions. However, spider veins appear as a nest of blue or red veins just under the surface of the skin, and do not protrude from beneath the skin. Though they do not pose a medical risk, spider veins can be removed with minimally invasive procedures for cosmetic reasons.

R A D I O F R E Q U E N C Y A B L AT I O N

MYTH: Men are not at risk for developing varicose veins and/or CVI TRUTH: Men, though less likely than women to develop varicose veins, are at risk for CVI. In fact, 42% of men are expected to develop varicose veins by the time they reach their 60s.3However, a majority of those do not seek treatment until symptoms worsen.

WHERE DO I HAVE TO GO FOR THE PROCEDURE? All of the vein procedures are performed at Legacy Vein Center, located at 109 Jack White Drive, Kingsport, Tennessee.

MYTH: Varicose veins are a cosmetic issue and don’t need to be treated. TRUTH: Varicose veins, though often thought of as a cosmetic nuisance, can actually progress to CVI, a more serious medical condition. CVI is a progressive disease that can result in increasingly serious symptoms if not treated, including leg pain, swelling, skin damage and ulcers. And, as a treatable condition, varicose veins can be mitigated by various minimally invasive treatments before they progress, including Venefit™ targeted endovenous therapy.

This virtually painless procedure treats the incompetent saphenous vein with a catheter inside the vein. Instead of removing the vein, the catheter heats the vein from the inside, destroying the lining of the vein. The vein contracts to a small size and becomes a scarred cord over time.

IS THIS PROCEDURE COVERED BY INSURANCE? All vein procedures with the exception of cosmetic spider veins are now considered medically necessary and are covered by most insurance companies including Medicare and some Tenncare plans. Spider veins are considered a “cosmetic” procedure and are not covered by insurance companies. For your convenience, Legacy Vein Center accepts a variety of payment and financing options to cover the costs of your cosmetic vein procedure. For more information contact Legacy Vein Center at 423.530.7070.

The Reeves Eye Institute is a comprehensive eye care practice with locations in Johnson City and Kingsport, Tennessee. Our eye care services include: CATARACT EVALUATIONS - Have you been diagnosed with a cataract or been experiencing a deterioration in vision? Learn more about cataract evaluations to help determine if cataract surgery is necessary for you. Your cataract should only be removed if it is causing problems. Since other eye conditions may cause similar symptoms, Dr. Reeves will take great care to thoroughly examine your eyes and determine the best course of treatment. CATARACT SURGERY - Cataract surgery is necessary when the eye’s clear lens becomes clouded and causes vision to become impaired. This may develop at birth, may be the result of an injury or, most commonly, may be the natural result of aging. Cataract surgery is one of the most commonly performed operations in the U.S. and is typically done on an outpatient basis. LASIK EYE SURGERY - LASIK eye surgery is the most common type of refractive surgery. LASIK (Laser-Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis) is a procedure that can correct certain vision problems and reduce or eliminate the dependence on eyeglasses and/or contact lenses. The goal of LASIK eye surgery is to give the patient clear, sharp vision.

D O N N Y L . R E E V E S, M . D.

PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) - Not a candidate for LASIK eye surgery? Don’t worry, PRK may be an option for you! PRK was the first laser refractive surgery approved by the FDA and received final approval in 1995. PRK is used to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, much like LASIK eye surgery.

EYELID SURGERY (Blepharoplasty) - Also known as an eyelid lift, Blepharoplasty is a relatively minor procedure used to address droopy eyelids by removing or tightening saggy skin around the eyes, resulting in a smoother, younger appearance. Dr. Reeves is experienced in treating a variety of eyelid and orbital medical conditions.

RETINAL DISEASE MANAGEMENT- Retinal diseases affect vital tissue in the eye which can impact your vision and may become serious enough to cause blindness. Some examples of retina diseases include: Diabetic Eye Disease, Keratoconus, Corneal Dystrophy and Fuchs’ Dystrophy. The Reeves Eye Institute is committed to preventing blindness from retinal diseases and providing you with the best retinal care.

ROUTINE EYE EXAMS - Regular eye exams are needed to maintain healthy vision. Vision problems, if not diagnosed and treated early, may lead to significant problems and even blindness and therefore early detection is key. If you experience any changes in vision between scheduled visits it is important that you call to schedule an appointment at The Reeves Eye Institute as soon as possible.

MACULAR DEGENERATION TREATMENT - Also known as AgeRelated Macular Degeneration, AMD is a leading cause of vision loss in people aged 60 and older. It is a disease that destroys your central vision. Central vision is necessary to see objects clearly and to complete every day tasks such as driving and reading. The best treatment for Macular Degeneration is early detection.

DIABETIC EYE CARE - For patients with Diabetes, regular eye exams are important to help detect Diabetic Retinopathy. In the early stages of Diabetes, eye exams once or twice a year may be necessary. During these visits, your doctor will be specifically looking for any leaking blood vessels which, if left undetected, may lead to more advanced levels of the disease later on. Early detection is critical.

L E I G H TO N W O O D, D D S, M S What is lnvisalign? lnvisalign uses a series of invisible, removable, and comfortable aligners that no one can tell you’re wearing. So, you can smile more during treatment as well as after. Not only are the aligners invisible, they are removable, so you can eat and drink what you want while in treatment. Plus, brushing and flossing are no problem. They are also comfortable, with no metal to cause mouth abrasions during treatment. And no metal and wires usually means you spend less time in your doctor’s office getting adjustments. lnvisalign also allows you to view your own virtual treatment plan when you start so you can see how your straight teeth will look when your treatment is complete. How Does lnvisalign Work? You wear each set of aligners for about two weeks, removing them only to eat, drink, brush, and floss. As you replace each aligner with the next in the series, your teeth will move - little by little, week by week until they have straightened to their final positions. You’ll visit us about once every six weeks to ensure that your treatment is progressing as planned. Total treatment time typically lasts nine to 15 months, and the number of aligners worn during treatment is between 18 and 30, but both numbers will vary from case to case.

W

ith Childhood Cancer Awareness Month coming up in September, many companies and families in the Tri Cities area are getting ready for the St. Jude Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancer at the Kingsport Town Center on September 26. Over the past few years, the communities in east Tennessee have joined together to raise funds and awareness in honor of local children affected by cancer and other life-threatening diseases. Many volunteers are already hard at work planning the perfect Saturday morning for runners, walkers, and local families. A few of the volunteers have shared their inspirational stories with VIPSEEN. If you’d like to support one of these local families or start your own team, you can register for the event today at stjude.org/walkrun.

JACOB Blountville, TN

ST. JUDE WALK/RUN TEAM: TEAM SUPER JACOB On November 15, 2012, Jacob’s mom, Misty, took him to his pediatrician, because she suspected he had pneumonia. After, labs, tests, and a chest x-ray, Jacob’s doctor sat with the family and shared that 2-year-old Jacob had Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). Early the next morning, Jacob and his parents left for Memphis, where they would start his two and a half year treatment at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Jacob received care at St. Jude and at the local affiliate clinic in Johnson City over the past few years, and as of June 16, 2015, he is in remission! During this time, Jacob’s family never received a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing, or food. Grateful for her experience at St. Jude, Misty said, “Thank you to our amazing doctors, nurses, researches, and all those involved with the hospital in any capacity.” Jacob and his friends and family formed a team for the St. Jude Walk/Run in 2014 and have served as volunteers for St. Jude as a way to give back.

BRIGGS Bristol, TN

ST. JUDE WALK/RUN TEAM: TEAM BRIGGS When Briggs was only 8 months old, his parents heard the words no parent ever expects to hear. “Your child has cancer.” Before his first birthday, Briggs underwent three rounds of chemotherapy. Thankfully, the treatment has been successful, and Briggs is now a very healthy two-year-old cancer survivor. Briggs is able to get back to the typical adventures of being a toddler and is also a proud, new big brother. Briggs’s parents, Dustin and Tiffany Goforth, are thankful for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the doctors and nurses at the local affiliate clinic. Tiffany said, “How do you say thank you to a place that saved your baby? No parents ever want to travel the road we have been on, but if you do, you thank God there is a place like St. Jude.” Because of the wonderful care that Briggs received, Tiffany and Dustin have gotten involved as volunteers for St. Jude. They serve on the St. Jude Walk Committee and lead a walk team that fundraises and walks in honor of Briggs and his cancer journey.

44 | VIPSEEN | AUGUST 2015

KAEL Johnson City, TN

ST. JUDE WALK/RUN TEAM: KURE KAEL At 19 weeks pregnant, Kael’s mother, Ashley, went to her ultrasound expecting to learn what gender her baby would be. Instead, she learned that baby Kael had a tumor. On the day after he was born in June of 2012, Kael had his first surgery, and was diagnosed a week later with Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma (ERMS). Kael started chemotherapy treatments at only 3 weeks old at the local affiliate clinic and began his journey through multiple scans and surgeries. At 4 months old, he underwent his largest surgery, a hip disarticulation amputation removing his left leg at the hip socket. With this surgery, Kael became cancer free. Now, Kael uses a prosthetic leg, attends pre-school, and he is starting his first season of soccer with big brother, Brody. Thanks to St. Jude, Kael is a happy, healthy little boy who recently celebrated his 3rd birthday at a farmthemed birthday party!

St. Jude Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancer

Join St. Jude supporters in Tri-Cities and in 58 cities nationwide in the St. Jude Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancer to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. This September, during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, we‘ll help St. Jude change the way the world understands, treats and defeats childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. Your support will help kids like Jacob, Kael, and Briggs! Because of the St. Jude Walk/Run and other fundraisers, families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food.

How can you help?

U N D E R S TA N D I N G M I G R A I N E H E A D A C H E S Migraine headaches affect 15% of the population, accounting for a significant amount of disability and missed work. To compound matters, migraines can be resistant to commonly prescribed medications. In this era of increased insurance deductibles, migraine medication can be prohibitively expensive over a lifetime.

What is migraine surgery? The nerves involved in triggering migraine headaches (the supraorbital nerves) are located in the forehead just above the eyebrows. As these nerves pass through muscle and connective tissue layers, these nerves can become constricted or irritated, triggering a migraine headache.

Who is a candidate for migraine surgery? All patients should be evaluated and given trial medical therapy prior to considering surgery. A patient’s primary physician or neurologist should be part of the treatment team. Surgical candidates include: 1) Patients who do not respond well to medications 2) Patients who suffer from chronic migraines (more than 10 times per month) 3) Patients who respond to BOTOX may be candidates for surgery if they desire a longer lasting solution to their headache problems

Surgery for migraines is typically performed under light sedation in an office or outpatient setting. Small incisions are placed behind the hairline of the forehead and an endoscope is used to identify and decompress the affected nerves by releasing constricting tissues around the nerves.

RESULTS A large majority of patients benefit from surgery. As the chart indicates, about 35% of patients have complete elimination of headaches. Another 55% of patients experience a 50% improvement in headache frequency or severity. A small minority of patients do not seem to respond to surgery. Results over a ten year history indicate lasting results, making surgery a viable alternative to medical management alone.

DR. DANIEL HAYNES As a reconstructive plastic surgeon, Dr. Daniel Haynes sees cancer patients from all walks of life. “Two-thirds of my practice is breast cancer reconstruction surgeries,” Haynes said. “When I was in training, breast cancer was a disease of 50- and 60-year-old women. Now we’re seeing it in younger and younger women.” Many of those women, Haynes explained, are choosing to have double mastectomies in hopes of eliminating the chance of breast cancer returning later in their lives. “Having a mastectomy reduces the risk by 95 percent,” Haynes said. While the risk of the cancer returning is nearly eliminated through such a procedure, it typically leads those who have it done to reconstructive surgeons like Haynes. “Cancer is a bad enough thing – you don’t want to be reminded of it every time you look in the mirror,” Haynes explained. “Implant breast reconstruction lets the patient feel like she is whole again.” Haynes recently co-authored an article that was published in the November issue of the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery about breast reconstruction surgeries. In it, he and co-author Dr. Joshua Kreithen, a former Quillen resident who now practices in Bradenton, Fla., analyze the use of Vicryl mesh in breast reconstruction surgeries. “When a woman has had a mastectomy, they basically remove everything down to the pectoral muscle,” Haynes said. “The first thing we do in reconstruction is put a tissue expander under that muscle. The problem is, a big part of the tissue expander is not actually covered by the muscle.”

To help, doctors often attach acellular dermal matrix – made from donated human skin – to the muscle to hold the muscle in place during the tissue expansion process. “It grows into the body and eventually becomes a part of you,” Haynes said. “But it is extremely expensive. For a reconstruction of both breasts, it increases the cost of surgery by about $8,000.” In an attempt to keep costs lower for both patients and the health care system as a whole, Haynes started working with another material – Vicryl mesh – to do the same job at a fraction of the price. “Vicryl is a suture material that is weaved into a fabric to make Vicryl mesh. Doctors use the suture material every day,” he said. “It dissolves over a course of a few months inside the body and goes away.” After having success with the mesh in several patients, Haynes decided to start collecting the data to analyze the results. Haynes and his counterpart reported on 38 patients in the study, presenting data on each of the patients over several years. “We realized we had something here,” he said. “It turned out very well.” While Haynes admits there may be times when the use of acellular dermal matrix is necessary, particularly in the revision of a reconstructive surgery, he believes the Vicryl mesh is a very effective, low-cost alternative in most breast reconstructions. If you would like to learn more or schedule a consultation with Dr. Haynes, please visit our website or call our office at 423-439-7201. AUGUST 2015 | VIPSEEN | 53

As an expression of gratitude for his unwavering support and leadership, PEAK hosted “A Toast and a Roast of the Mayor” inviting many of Mayor Phillips’s friends and colleagues to a light-hearted evening celebrating his ten years as Mayor. Several guests shared hilarious anecdotes of Mayor Phillips’s leadership style, great moments, and triumphs. From there you could travel up and down the streets visiting local merchants selling everything from jewelry, to books, to handmade crafts. If fair food was your thing you could find mini donuts, cheesesteaks, burgers, ice cream, and of course funnel cakes. Bands such as The Jonesborough Novelty Band and The Beach Nite Band provided music for everyone. Farm to Table STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY LYNDA FONTAINE

Ahhhh yes, let’s start with….Southern Fried Green Tomatoes and Zucchini with Remoulade, Pickled Peach Salad with Pickled peaches, spinach arugula mix radishes, roasted carrots, cucumbers with peach vinaigrette… now lets move on to the Entree…Hoisin Seared Beef Tenderloin with Marinated Beef Heart and Soya Micro-vegetable medley and…to top it off...Sweet Blackberry Cobbler! Is your mouth watering yet? Well, I’d be surprised if it wasn’t! This is the menu that was served recently at the Downtown Kingsport Association’s second annual Farm to Table Event.

Angie Ricker, Christina Ketron, and Roy Richmond

Each amazing course was prepared by Downtown Restaurants with ingredients harvested from local Farmers of Sullivan County. Each course was paired with a beer, wine or moonshine by Sleepy Owl Brewery, Reedy Creek Cellars, and Hook & Ladder Distillery respectively. The tables were absolutely stunning with attention to detail right down to the last flickering candle imitating in a bed of moss surrounded by fragrant wildflowers. The evening began with cocktails while guests greeted one another, soon everyone seated and the appetizers were served. Throughout the evening, patrons were serenaded musically and vocally by The Model City Groove School and later joined by Rusty Clark and his bluesy melodies. A divine evening was had by all and I, for one, can attest that I will be looking forward to next years event and all the deliciousness and fun that naturally comes with this awesome and popular event. STAYCations! Serve it Up Sassy

A Healthy End-of-Summer Home Vacation

RECIPE DEVELOPMENT, FOOD STYLING, PHOTOGRAPHY, AND ARTICLE BY LIZ BUSHONG

P

ack your Bags, it’s time for the best end-of-summer vacation you have ever had and you don’t have to leave home to take it! Summer doesn’t have to end in August, take a relaxing and enjoyable vacation at-home or in your hometown anytime you want. Don’t get stressed about not taking a vacation, take one this week. Perhaps money and time was tight this summer and you didn’t get the opportunity to go to the beach? How about staging a backyard beach themed clambake, or a Caribbean lunch featuring fresh fruits and tropical drinks with the little paper umbrellas. Maybe you prefer a spa week or outdoor adventure, whatever you love to do, make this staycation a memorable vacation. Vacations are healthy and we all need to de-stress, rejuvenate and energize our souls. Staying home for vacation can be healing if the staycation is seriously planned.

AUGUST 2015 | VIPSEEN | 77

A true staycation is more than just a week at home; it is a planned intentional time of events, relaxation and fun for your entire family. Brief-your-case for having a vacation at home by including your family with the planning process. Gather brochures just like you would when you plan a travel destination. Create a budget for activities and food. Plan your menu for the week and make-a-head a few meals related to your themed vacation. No one really wants to cook while on vacation, unless it is a culinary destination. Clean your house before you begin your staycation. Get caught up on laundry, dishes, and the everyday duties that can be stressful. Place special scents and music in your home that reflect the type of vacation you are taking. Select special guest room items in each bedroom to mimic a bed and breakfast vacation. Set up and stock a beverage center with your family’s favorite snacks or snacks that you would have on a travel destination. Set up a continental breakfast buffet for each day of your vacation. Develop a rule that the entire family will unplug all technical devices including cell phones, computers, pads, and even watches during this vacation week. Make it a game and give a prize at the end of the week to the family member who

stayed true to the technical shut down. Select a prize that excites everyone and announce the no–tech challenge at the beginning of the vacation week or during your family planning meeting. Have the family pack a suitcase with vacation clothes and re-enter the home the first day of the staycation, as if they have just arrived at their travel destination. Make this staycation fun and a time for reconnecting with the family. To inspire the family with the staycation idea, the planning dinner meeting should be festive. Good food always brings people together and a pretty tablescape will reinforce the excitement that an at- home vacation could be fun. A suitcase-turned-centerpiece promises to be the main attraction and hit of this family dinner party. A backyard profusion of blooms-hydrangeas, pink geraniums and verbena- overflows the open suit case centerpiece. Simply line the vintage suitcase with plastic then add a water- filled rectangular dish to hold the fresh cut flowers and potted plants in place. Bright and bold colorful placemats serve as a runner for the center of the table. A healthy menu includes black bean burgers with spicy potato buns, sweet potato fries and a peachy apricot parfait for dessert. Gather the gear, the backpacks, suitcases, luggage tags, carry on bags and accessories that relate to taking a vacation and decorate the dining area to your hearts content. Your family will be excited about the best endof-summer vacation they could ever have. Mini Suit Case Favor The finished size of this mini suitcase is 3 x 4” and is constructed out of card stock. The overall pattern is 9 x 6 with one inch border all around the outside and center front. Fold the paper in half and mark but do not fold with a crease, measure 1/2” on both sides of the pointed mark. This double line will be the bottom of the suitcase and will be 1 inch wide. Fold all solid lines and clip the 4 ends to fold back the corners to create the box. Glue sides and add selfadhesive photo corners as suitcase grommets. See lizbushong.com for details.

SETTING THE STAGE FOR A PRETTY TABLE IS EASY ONCE YOU DETERMINE YOUR STAYCATION DINNER THEME. Start with the centerpiece. If you have fresh flowers in the yard, begin your color scheme with a bouquet of blossoms. Hydrangea, white zinnias, dahlias, ivy, or whatever colorful blooms you have determine what main color you have in abundance and go with that color. Add simple greenery such as hydrangea leaves, horsetail, ferns and ivy to help break up the strong burst of color. Select a centerpiece container that relates to the overall theme of the dinner; an old leather suitcase was used for this staycation dinner planning meeting. Selecting colorful placemats will help with your pretty table setting. If the placemat is striped sometimes you can run the striped mat in the opposite direction as the individual setting to create a different but cohesive look. Since this is an informal table setting fewer utensils and dishes are used. Serving dishes can be placed on the table and the simple classic white dinner plate is standard. Sometimes a cup and saucer are placed on the right side of the spoon and sometimes the napkin is placed in a water or wine glass. Sassy napkin folds always make the individual place setting intriguing to a guest. Select a solid napkin color if using striped place mats and vice versa. Alternate a different napkin color at each place setting for more interest and intrigue. Take home favors are not just for weddings or showers but anytime you have a dinner party. It is a way to express your heart and joy of serving your guest. These favors can be fine chocolates, after dinner mints, or a token miniature of the overall theme of the dinner. Whatever you decide to do on this staycation, setting the table with a pretty presentation will make everyone smile with hope and expectation.

Lavelle Denim Launch PHOTOGRAPHY AND STORY BY JAMES HELMS

Stephen Curd is a clothing designer from Chicago, IL who has relocated to the Tri-cities area and over the last couple of years has made quite an impact in the art and design community. Stephen has created a new line of customizable denim jeans that will be manufactured locally in Bristol, Tennessee at the famed L.C. King manufacturing company. The Lavelle line of clothing was named after Stephen’s grandmother who inspired him and spent many a day in his youth teaching him to sew. Stephen created a kickstarter campaign to help launch this new venture with over 110 pairs of jeans pre-ordered before the official launch. The process begins by getting fitted for the style of jeans that you like, exact measurements are taken and the jeans customized to your body style and preferences. Then your jeans are custom made locally at the L.C. King factory and made available for pickup. Stephen hopes to expand his line to include jackets and other products as well. www.garicstephens.com

United Way 2015

Week of Caring STORY BY MORGAN MOSELEY | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SAVANNA MCDAVID

The United Way of Greater Kingsport kicked off its 2015 Week of Caring on June 15th with the traditional Regional Project going between several local United Way organizations throughout the Tri-Cities. Regions Bank, a sponsor since 1992, Local United Ways and volunteers from all over came to improve a local organization by painting murals, assembling/ staining benches, landscaping and much more, all done for the Boys & Girls Club of the Greater Kingsport Area. Bed gardens were built at Lee Apartments, landscaping services completed at Andrew Jackson Elementary and improvements at local organizations, to name a few, couldn’t have all been possible without the 1,000 volunteers. Around 110 projects involving light construction, maintenance services, and landscaping were all completed during the Week of Caring. “United Way of Greater Kingsport’s mission is to improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of our community to address local health and human service needs effectively.”

Indian Path Block Party PHOTOGRAPHY AND STORY BY JAMES HELMS

June 30 marked the date for the Indian Path Resource Center’s Fun Fest Block Party outside of their facility in the Kingsport Town Center Mall. Laurel McKinney, her staff, and other volunteers welcomed visitors and showered them with medical information, pedometers, jump ropes, FunFest goodies and other items. Funsize Snack bar also located in the mall offered free strawberry banana smoothies to every guest that wanted one in honor of Healthy Kingsport. Outside of the center there was also a table that instructed the guests on how to make bracelets with colored bands and then they got to keep them. Special entertainment was provided by the band Model City Wrecking Crew who wowed the crowd with their high energy and melodic renditions of classic rock music. The Health Resource Center is open Monday thru Saturday and provides free blood pressure checks, A1C testing, Cholesterol screenings, registered nurses on hand to provide health information, individual nutrition counseling and other services as well. Sponsorship Breakfast

One Kingsport cardiologist and his family have seldom missed a Fun Fest since the first one 35 years ago. After helping start the cardiology group at Holston Valley Medical Center decades ago, Harry Turner is retiring this year. To celebrate, Holston Valley and Fun Fest put on a surprise concert in his honor, with his favorite musician John McCutcheon. Members of the community did a great job keeping this a secret from Dr. Turner.

The morning of the Fun Fest Parade, a Sponsorship Breakfast is held at the beautiful Meadowview Conference Resort and Convention Center. This is where all the sponsors, and everyone who had a hand in creating Fun Fest, come together to eat breakfast and be honored with special tokens of appreciation. The Sponsorship Breakfast is officially the “unofficial start of Fun Fest.
