PROLOGUE Spread on a small hill along the Fateh Sagar Lake is a fabric made by intertwining strings of art, culture and aspirations. This variety of strings makes it a unique and colorful web. Fabric where its texture and fold replicating the mountains, merging with the hill, the fabric becomes a part of it while whispering its own being. Sliding and folding as the ground shakes, it watches generation’s blissing its beauty.

SITE INTERPRETATION The site in the Fateh Sagar lake complex in Udaipur situated on a mountain facing towards the lake on its south. The site offers multiple points which provides a variety of experience. Elements like sky, lake and mount seems to converge on this points making them exclusive. The ratio of these elements and the form they sit in exaggerates the effect of this points. This points sits on the foot of the mount where the concave form of the mount envelopes the space and the viewer is on the lake level making the whole space seem horizontal Similarly one of the points is situated on the top of the mount as the where one rises above the Fateh Sagar lake complex and gets a much larger view of the whole city making ones presence insignificant. One of the points in situated where the valley ends, opening up towards the lake which acts as a gateway on the site This points acted as the anchor points of the project

INITIAL CONCEPTUAL MODELS

Enveloping the point present on the foot of the mount ; creating a courtyard Parallel spaces along the lake connecting the anchor points

creating multiple roof around one point creating courtyard

creating multiple courtyards using multiple volumes emphasising the horizontality of the site

Parallel spaces agganged on multiple levels to visually connect every space to the lake

creating underground spaces leaving viod inbetween

connecting the whole project by one roof

multiple spaces along the slope overlooking eachother and facing the lake

creating built in the valley such that it acts as the gateway to the lake

binding all the fuction under one roof and creating multiple terraces

creating multiple courtyards on the site creating a series of open and closed spaces, opening up on the anchor points on the site

PROGRAM INTERPRETATION

The idea is to create a place which is visited on an regular basis. These spaces being flexible in nature and can cater to a large spectrum of society, both physical and socio-cultural aspects where the spaces are very transparent and can be modified as per the user.

the idea was to create a destintion which becomes part of the cycle of life which can be habited in multiple ways. the program should equally respond to its primary fuction of a art gallery as well as a ground for local artists to work and share their skills.

CONCEPTUAL MODELS

multiple fuctions arragned around the focal points

continous built with multiple courtyards connecting all points

stepping roof overlooking each-other aligning with the lake

moduler spaces creating multiple courtyard around multiple focul points

slpoing roof around the courts responding the weather and the focus points

built form responding to all the points separately creating linear spaces creating multiple courts

stepping roof overlooking each-other aligning with the lake

Built form responding and exaggerating the experience of all the points separately

PROCESS MODELS The functions are arranged in a fragmented fashion where they respond to lake as well as the focus points with multiple terraces which function as movement spaces, spill out as well no programmatic terrace which can be interpreted and used by the users. Thus, there is no entry or exit to the program and all the activities happened on the outside

spaces fragmented facing the lake and connected through multiple terrace

creating the sense of arrival by creating a platform on the arrival level

Built form arranged in a geometry that creates a street tying all the functions.t

built form made out of a module where the ground floor is more enclosed and the above structure is open and lighter

The transition in the spaces are designed such that it follows an order from open to semi open to closed space.

movement has been designed in a way that one would experience the multiple levels of the site.

ART GALLERY

The idea of art gallery as a space to interact, understand and learn art has not been practiced in a context like India. The project offer a larger platform for the city of Udaipur to exhibit their art form as well as verity of plastic art form from around the world. The art gallery provides spaces that could serve to users regular spatial need and in the process of visiting the space for personal use the user interacts with art.

DIALOGUE The building is fragmented based on their functions into four major levels where each function is tucked in the ground and all the function area connecting to a street made up of multiple terraces that are multifunctional used as the spill out spaces for the functions. This street acts as the core axis. The built follows a G of G+1 typology where the ground floor is made of stone with minimum openings signifying its belonging to the ground where as the first floor transparent making the whole space very light.

ORGANIZATION The movement is designed as a street that take the visitor around the all the functions with is series of staircases and terraces. Art gallery being the primary functions are placed in the central spaces such that the movement emphasises on the galleries. Secondary functions like admin and shop are placed on the outer sides. Cafe and gallery becomes the culminating point in the end. Modules are arranged in order to create multiple courtyards which can be used by the visitors and as well at could support all the functions.

LANGUAGE The lower floor are made out of random rubble stone masonry with minimum openings which merges with the context due to its form and finish, further there are concrete bands an seal, lintel and slab bottom level and light is brought in by lifting the roof up with glass brick fixed In the opening. The upper floor is a timber pavilion which is open on all sides where the roof is made out of a timber truss resting on timber columns which on the contrast creates a lighter space. The idea was to created variety of spaces using similar module creating a seamless experience throughout the built form.

VISITORS CENTER The site is a steep mount situated which forms a part of the aravalli ranges in palitana. A key element of the site is the pathway leading to jain temple. The design intervention so proposed was a visitors centre for the jain temple. In order to provide respite and a break from the tiresome journey, the idea was to create an alternate pathway to reach the temple which would provide lounging spaces for the visitors. The building itself is designed to become a part of the mount and the experience enhances the key features of the site i.e the mount and the valley.

THE JOURNEY the journey to the jain temple is a variety of experiences. it takes one through narrow alleys and never ending mountain ranges which finally culminates at the temples. the building is a integral part of the journey, which enhances the experience of ascension to the temple.
