CAULFEILD WEST VANCOUVER

KITSILANO VANCOUVER Located on Vancouver’s West Side, Kitsilano, or “Kits” as it’s affectionately known, is a neighbourhood that has transformed dramatically from its early origins. In the 1960s this now-chic enclave was a haunt for hippies. And while there’s still a bohemian vibe here, everything is much more upscale than it was during its beatnik heyday. Kitsilano is a rectangular-shaped area that’s framed by Burrard and Alma streets at its eastern and western edges, West 16th Avenue to the south and the beguiling blue waters of English Bay to the north. Towering trees provide shade on the quiet streets, while playgrounds, dog friendly parks and beaches abound. The pocket neighbourhood of Kits Point nudges north of Cornwall Avenue toward the water, where character homes are surrounded by lush gardens and manicured landscapes. On gusty days nearby Vanier Park lures kite-flyers. Plus this seaside green space features a wealth of cultural attractions such as the Vancouver Maritime Museum, the Museum of Vancouver, the HR MacMillan Space Centre (better known as the Planetarium) and the Vancouver Academy of Music. In summer, Bard on the Beach, Vancouver’s longrunning Shakespeare festival, takes to the stage under a redand-white striped tent. It’s not surprising that one of the neighbourhoods’ biggest draws is the celebrated Kitsilano Beach—a playground for all ages with its tennis and basketball courts, soft sand that’s ideal for playing volleyball or suntanning, plus the 137-metre-long saltwater swimming pool that offers panoramas of downtown Vancouver and the North Shore mountains beyond. Low-rise condos and stately homes lie just back of the beach and its surrounding green space that’s shaded by the massive canopies of chestnut trees. South of Cornwall Avenue, which has a handful of casual cafes and eateries, rows of vintage-style buildings—many with water views—perch on the hilly streets that climb to West 4th Avenue, Kitsilano’s destination shopping stroll. Whatever the season, West 4th is always a happy hive of activity. Newer condos have sprung up on top of freshly renovated buildings. Fashionistas, outdoor enthusiasts, yogis and young families all flock here to shop in the distinctive boutiques. Family-run restaurants, cafes, vegetable markets, butchers and bakeries all mingle along the street instead of the big-box retailers that dominate many communities. Elementary schools (Henry Hudson, Bayview and Lord Tennyson, among others) are scattered throughout the neighbourhood. Teens attend Kitsilano Secondary School, which is dedicated to sports with more than 45 teams. Nearby is the vaunted Meraloma Club, a co-ed sponsor of amateur sport since 1923, which hosts teams in soccer, cricket, rugby and more.

Character is present throughout Kitsilano. Community vegetable gardens stretch along disused train tracks that crisscross the community, providing a place for urbanites to cultivate crops.
