President’s Message Where has the time gone? May is here and Black Rock 2016 and VIRPCA West Coast Anniversary are just around the corner! For those of you attending please take a minute to thank any of committee members you meet. They have put in countless hours organizing these two events. Brandi is now four months old; when Wanda is not around I am tirelessly trying to train her to say Porsche! Soon she will be crawling and next wanting to drive the car! If you are in the neighborhood, our next meeting is Tuesday, May 10th, at Jack's Place (2020 Country Club Way, Bear Mountain, Victoria) at 7pm. Dinner will be at 6pm, please RSVP to Michael Holan (secretary@virpca.org)

Editor’s Comment It’s exciting times currently, what with new updated models announced from Porsche such as the 718 Boxster and Cayman and of course the new 911 Turbo which was unveiled on the Island recently at Porsche Victoria, too late to make this issue but I’ll have some pictures and info in the next edition (sneak peek here). If you prefer reading your Porscher on paper, good news—we’ll be printing it soon hopefully. We are taking advertisers now and that should defray the costs of printing. You should be able to choose to receive the printed version or not and of course, if you or your company want to advertise in the newsletter to fellow Porsche owners, please contact me anytime.

718 Boxster & Cayman

T

wenty years after the first Boxster made its debut, Porsche has introduced the latest generation of its midengine roadsters featuring more power, greater fuel efficiency, and further improved handling. The new models are named 718 Boxster and 718 Boxster S, paying homage to the flat-four cylinder engines that were used in the mid-engine Porsche 718 sports car which won numerous races back in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The same new fourcylinder flat engines with turbocharging are being deployed in both the 718 Boxster and Cayman. As a result, coupé and roadster have an identical engine output for the first time. The centerpiece of the latest model range is the newly developed, turbocharged flat four-cylinder engine. The 718 engine generates 300 hp from two liters, while the 718 Smodel uses a 2.5 liter engine developing 350 hp. The S-model also employs a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry. The new engines develop 35 more horsepower compared to those of the previous model and are also up to 14% more efficient . Completely retuned suspension and uprated brakes make for exceptional performance and driving pleasure. The design of the new model line was also comprehensively improved. Every body part except for the luggage compartment lids, the windshield and the convertible top has been changed. Inside, a newly designed dashboard frames the driving area. Furthermore, the latest generation of PCM with a state-of-the-art touchscreen is included as standard. The navigation module is available as an option. Efficient and powerful flat-four cylinder engines A completely new generation of turbocharged flat-four cylinder engines takes performance and efficiency in the 718 to new heights. Turbocharging significantly boosts torque. The two-liter engine of the 718 puts out 280 lb.-ft. of torque, which is available from 1,950 rpm to 4,500 rpm. To put this into perspective: The new engine makes 74 lb.-ft. or 36% more torque than the previous powertrain and does so over a much broader power band. The 2.5-liter engine of the 718 S–model develops 309 lb.-ft. from 1,900 to 4,500 rpm – a 43 lb.-ft. gain over the outgoing Boxster S engine. This yields significant gains in acceleration. The 718 – when equipped with PDK and the Sport Chrono Package – goes 0 to 100 kph in 4.7 seconds. The 718 S-model outfitted with these performance-enhancing options reaches 100 kph in 4.2 seconds (0.5 seconds faster than its predecessor). The top track speed of the 718 is 275 kph, and the 718 S-model can achieve a top track speed of 285 kph. Turbocharging also helps the powertrains of the 718 and S-model to be up to 14% more efficient than the previous engines. The 718 models come standard with a six-speed manual transmission. The PDK which now features fuel-saving virtual gears, is available as an option. New design emphasizes sharpened profile The 718 and 718 S are immediately recognizable. The front has been re-sculpted and has a wider, more muscular appearance. Significantly larger cooling air intakes serve as a distinct symbol of the new turbocharged engine generation. Redesigned Bi-Xenon headlights with integrated LED daytime running lights are another striking feature. Optionally, LED headlights with four-point daytime running lights are available – a first for the mid-engine roadster. From a side view, identifying features of the new model line include new, independently styled wings and side sills. Larger air inlet panels with two fins emphasize the car's dynamic look. The doors are now designed without door handle recess covers. New 19-inch wheels are standard on the 718 S-model, with 20-inch wheels optionally available. The redesigned rear fascia of the 718 models places a much greater emphasis on width – especially due to the strip with PORSCHER — April 2016

integrated Porsche badge located between the tail lights. The new taillights stand out thanks to three-dimensional LED technology and four-point brake lights. Sportier suspension tuning and calibration for greater agility The outstanding dynamic performance of its namesake served as inspiration to continue to improve upon the exceptional handling of the mid-engine roadster. The 718’s completely retuned suspension enhances cornering performance. The electric steering system is 10% more direct than before. This does not only increase agility and precision but also maneuverability, on challenging roads and track as well as in every-day traffic.

Optionally available: Porsche Active Suspension Management PASM is available as an option and includes a 10mm lower ride height compared to the standard suspension. For the first time, the PASM Sport Suspension with a 20mm lower ride height is available as an option for the 718 S models. The active suspension, which has also been retuned, offers an even broader spread between ride comfort suitable for long road trips and stiffness necessary for spirited driving. Sport Chrono Package for particularly engaging driving experience Just like in the 911, the optional Sport Chrono Package now includes the Individual program in addition to the three settings Normal, Sport and Sport Plus. In models equipped with PDK, the Sport Response Button, which was inspired by motorsports, has been added. It sharpens the responsiveness of the engine and the transmission to promote best possible acceleration.

New Porsche Communication Management as standard A familiar environment awaits the driver inside the new 718, which has been upgraded with new elements such as the instrument panel. Another defining element of the new interior layout is the PCM with cell phone preparation, audio interfaces and the 110 watt Sound Package Plus. The PCM can be enhanced with a navigation module including voice control. Beyond that, the Connect Plus module is available as an extension of the navigation module, providing a wide array of online services. The 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman are both visually and technically similar. The Roadster will be positioned at a higher price level than the Coupé – as is done for the 911 models. Porsche will introduce the 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman over the course of 2016. Prices start at $61,500 for the 718 Cayman and $63,900 for the 718 Boxster. To have PDK add $3,660, and if you want the S-model add $14,100. [Courtesy Porsche.com]

History of the 718

F

our-cylinder flat engines have a long tradition at Porsche – and they have enjoyed incredible success. In the late 1950s, the 718 – a successor to the legendary Porsche 550 Spyder – represented the highest configuration level of the fourcylinder flat engine. Whether it was competing at the 12hour race in Sebring in 1960 or at the European Hill Climb Championship that ran between 1958 and 1961, the Porsche 718 prevailed against numerous competitors with its powerful and efficient four-cylinder flat engine. The 718 took first place three times between 1959 and 1960 at the legendary Italian Targa Florio race in Sicily. At the 24 Hours of Le Mans race 1958, the 718 RSK with its 142-hp fourcylinder engine scored a class victory. PORSCHER — April 2016

DIY Oil Change 986/987 Boxster by Martin Mansfield

F

or those of you who want to start working on your car, changing the oil is one of the easiest places to start. How often should you change your oil? Even though Porsche recommends longer distances between oil changes, I recommend depending on how you drive your car, changing your oil at least once a year or every 10,000 km.

Parts Required   

Oil (check your manual for type) Filter Crush Washer (8 x 24 x 1.5 mm Aluminum)

Tools Required       

Filter wrench Ratchet or Torque wrench 8 mm Hex socket Oil Catch pan Shop towels Rubber gloves Safety glasses

Now you have to decide what brand and weight oil you want to use on your car. In our climate Porsche recommends 0w40 Mobil1. For my driving style I use 5w40 Motul. I stick to the Porsche brand oil filter as they are inexpensive.

Before you start, I recommend driving the car until the oil is warmed up, as fluid flows better when it is warm. You can change your oil without having to lift your car (you might need the help from the neighbor’s kids). I purchased wheel ramps from Costco for around $60.

Once are able to get under the car slide your catch pan under the plug (I recommend using at least 10L catch pan). Use your 8 mm Hex socket to remove the oil plug. While the oil is draining, attach your filter wrench and remove the filter housing, be ready for oil to run down the filter housing once removed. You should see the filter cartridge still attached to the engine. Once the oil is drained put your new crush washer on the drain plug and install to 37 Foot lbs or 444 Inch lbs. PORSCHER — April 2016

Page 9

Take the new filter cartridge and install it on the tube coming out of the engine. Make sure to replace the O ring on the filter housing. Once the O ring is installed on the housing, place a small amount of new oil on your finger and run it around the O ring. Now reinstall the housing to a torque of 19 Foot lbs or 228 Inch lbs.

Lower the car if possible without starting the engine. The simplest way to put the oil back into the engine is to find a container that is exactly the capacity you need. My 2003 Boxster S takes 8.25L. I use the measuring increments on the side of the jug to get the correct amount. To be safe check the dipstick or electronic system when you are close to capacity.

Make sure you have reinstalled the oil filler cap. You are now finished, make sure to take your used oil to a proper recycling facility. CAUTION: Procedures showing maintenance or mechanical modifications to your vehicle may require advanced levels of mechanical proficiency. Porsche Riddle & Contest

T

hanks to Paul Rossmo of Porsche Victoria for this riddle. Paul also generously donated a nice Porsche Alloy Wheel Cleaning Kit for the Comox Valley Cars & Coffee 1st Anniversary meeting on April 9th organised by Wendy Woodley, our North Island Director.

There are five Porsche owners who park in the same lot. They all share a passion for Porsches and wrist watches.

The Englishman drives a British Racing Green Porsche The American wears an Apple watch The Canadian drinks water The GT Silver Porsche parks to the left of the White Porsche The owner of the GT Silver Porsche drinks beer The driver of the Boxster wears a Bell & Ross watch The Miami Blue Porsche is a Macan The Porsche with the middle parking spot drinks tea The Frenchman parks in the first parking space The Owner of the Cayman R parks next to the owner with a Panerai watch The owner who wears a Rolex parks next to the driver of the Macan The driver of the 918 drinks Starbucks The German drives a 911R The Frenchman parks next to the Guards Red Porsche The driver of the Cayman R parks next to the driver that drinks wine Using these facts, determine who wears a Tag Heuer watch? Sorry, no prize for the riddle this month, back to the regular caption contest next month!

Thanks to our relatively new member Edith Skiber, for the photo of her 2014 Cayman getting a peek outside on a cool Bowser day in February this year. If anyone has any photos that we can feature in the newsletter, please send to the Editor at the email address on page 2.

Last Month’s Caption Contest Result

Last month’s caption winner was Tony Booth :- “This one won't plough into the corners”. Tony obviously has lots of spare time on his hands, and went for the quantity not quality approach, as he also sent in 4 more attempts :   

This customer gave the paint department harrowing thoughts. For making "Haaaaaay" on those days when the sun doesn't shine. Elmer, how many times must I ask you?.... Stop doing the chores around here! Drive a Porsche and 'cultivate' friendships.

Some other notables, from Wendy Woodley — “Santa's new reindeer “and Gary Woodley - “New Porsche Tractor”. Thanks to everyone who entered.

Special exhibit ‘40 Years of the Transaxle’

O

n the one hand, they are ideal sports cars and on the another an aberration in Porsche history - the transaxle models. The Porsche Museum is showing examples in a special exhibit from April 27 to October 16, 2016. In 1976, Porsche introduced the transaxle powertrain configuration in the type 924 and embarked into new territory. The engine is mounted in front, but the transmission is at the rear axle. Between 1976 and 1995, Porsche built a generation of sports cars that deviated far from the established principles of the 911 – in the types 924, 928, 944 and 968. On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of these models, the Porsche Museum is showing 23 exceptional examples of these cars in the framework of the special exhibition The Transaxle Era. From the 924 to the 928. Over half of these cars are being exhibited at the museum for the first time ever. A perfect combination of sportiness and everyday practicality The transaxle models were a great economic success for the sports car manufacturer in this era. Porsche was able to sell cars built with the new drivetrain configuration to nearly 400,000 customers worldwide. Underlying this success is a philosophy that is typical of Porsche: a perfect combination of sportiness and everyday practicality. In addition to exhibiting a selection of production and race cars, the Porsche Museum also shows select prototypes and concept cars that have so far never left the museum's exhibit hall. For instance, a number of different derivatives of the Porsche 924 that initially served as an entry-level model are on display. The 924 Turbo Targa prototype of 1979 is being shown for the first time. Although this model never went into production, its design flowed into the development of the 944 cabriolet. 928 S4 cabriolet concept car shown The Porsche 928, which celebrated its premiere at the Geneva International Motor Show in March 1977, was initially intended to replace the 911. As a Gran Turismo and luxury sports car, it forged entirely new paths with much better ride comfort and a large boot. Just one year later, in 1978, the 928 became the only sports car to date to be named "Car of the Year". As part of a potential extension of the 928 model line, work began on a cabriolet version of the Gran Turismo in the spring of 1987. This resulted in the 928 S4 cabriolet concept car, which – despite its harmonious design – would never be produced. This one-of-a-kind prototype is also being shown in the special exhibit along with five other 928 models. PORSCHER — April 2016

Page 17

The 928 S4 cabriolet concept car

The type 944 followed in September 1981. It was positioned as a link between the 924 and the 911 with its 163-hp four cylinder engine. Right from the start, the 944 was accepted as a "genuine" Porsche, not least because of its Porsche engine that was derived from the 928. No previous Porsche model had sold so well or quickly as the 944. By the time its production ended in 1991, a total of 163,302 units of the 944 model line sports car had been produced. The special exhibition includes such items as the cabriolet concept car from the year 1985, which is being shown in public for the first time. This model, painted in flamingo pink, is distinguished by a 183-hp four-valve per cylinder engine with a catalytic converter, airbag and ABS. The first concept of a 944 cabriolet was presented in 1985 at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt am Main. Porsche 968 marks the end of the transaxle era

Other 944 models of the special exhibition include the "Luna" project, which was essentially an endurance test conducted by the Austrian endurance specialist Gerhard Plattner in 1987. He travelled from North America across Europe to Asia in a period of 258 days, covering 384,405 kilometres – equivalent to the distance from the Earth to the moon. The Porsche 968 – a product of 15 years of technical evolution – marks the end of the transaxle era. Its centrepiece is a 240-hp three-litre engine that is one of the world's most torque-strong four-cylinder naturally-aspirated engines. Visitors will also enjoy to seeing a roadster concept of the Porsche 968 that was created in 1992 under the leadership of the former head of design, Harm Laagay. The main traits of this prototype are the soft and muscular form of its wings, a dynamic cockpit section and an emotionally-charged interior. At the end of 1992, the 968 roadster project was retired in favour of the Boxster concept car that was presented in early 1993. Service concept closely links Porsche tradition and innovation

The Zuffenhausen-based sports car manufacturer has also demonstrated its competence in vehicle restoration in the transaxle model lines. Porsche Classic services all vehicles whose production end date is generally more than ten years in the past. These services encompass all aspects – from car care and technical literature to delivery and aftermarket manufacturing of original parts and even complete restorations. A total of over 52,000 original parts are currently available worldwide. Porsche integrates the care and value preservation of both modern classics and vintage cars into an innovative service concept that closely interlinks Porsche tradition and innovation. "Transaxle Day" on May 22

Sunday, May 22, is "International Museum Day" and the Porsche Museum invites visitors to attend its "Transaxle Day".

Along with free admission on that Sunday, many guided tours will be conducted through the special exhibition. In addition, private owners will be showing their transaxle vehicles at various parking places around the museum. Visitors can look them over at the entrance plaza to the museum, in the logistics courtyard and in front of the branch office. A highlight will be the Transaxle Talk at the shop inside the museum, in which time period witnesses who were very involved with the models will offer a retrospective on the development and successes of the 924, 928, 944 and 968 models. 2016 Bogus Basin Bacchanalia June 10-12 in Idaho he Silver Sage Region will again host the Bogus Basin Bacchanalia (BBB) weekend that includes PCA's only hill -cross. BBB is a multi-region event, first held in 1976 that includes the hill-cross, a golf outing, and a mystery event on June 10-12, 2016.

The BBB weekend starts with registration and a get-acquainted dinner on Friday evening at Porsche of Boise in Boise, Idaho. Saturday is dedicated to the hill-cross, where you can drive your Porsche as it was meant to be driven: safe, fast and on a beautiful stretch of winding mountain road. The course is nearly two miles long and features eight major turns and over 500 feet of elevation gain. If you want to be challenged by the BBB hill-cross, be sure to register early since the number of entrants in the hill-cross is limited. On Sunday a golf outing is scheduled for those so inclined at one of Boise's better courses. Sunday's final event is a champagne reception and awards banquet, at which trophies will be handed out. Sometime during the weekend, a mystery event will take place. Since it's a mystery, that's all you get to know for now. You can learn more about BBB and get an application form by visiting the Silver Sage Region's web site, ss.pca.org.
