ur AGM is fast approaching and we have vacant positions that need filling. Membership Director, Treasurer, Web Master and Mid-Island Director. Please send James Renfrew an email if you have any interest in volunteering your time for the club.
In September, we had one of our members pass. I only had a few opportunities to hang out with Mike Griffin, but those times were memorable. Mike was always a highlight on our North Island Escape, his unique sense of humour was always a hit! Mike will be greatly missed by all!

took a short break from the newsletter in September, as my wife and I headed off on a much needed vacation (this retirement stuff is not easy), so this month’s issue is all about the recent club events that occurred in September and October—it was quite busy as you’ll see. I hope you’ll read our member Al Sherwood’s great article on his 718 experience and enter our photo contest to win a prize!

Autocross 2016 lanning an autocross while waiting for the storm of the decade to roll in wasn’t what I was looking forward to, but autocross is a rain or shine event, the venue was booked and the chili was cooked!
On Sunday October 16th, we had 19 drivers show for an usually busy day, but I think mother nature scared a few away. Five club members arrived to drive their Porsches around the cones at Western Speedway. Among them were Garth Webber Atkins (944 Turbo) and Steve Comberbach (’01 911 Carrera) both first time autocrossers.
With the help of a dedicated bunch of volunteers, we managed to set a challenging enough course in about 50 minutes (must be a record) and started on time near 10:30am. That’s a record for me! The day started wet but with showers off and on, it was never too wet to run. In fact, after lunch it warmed up enough for the cars with performance tires to take it to the next level and the competition heated up. Even though there was still moisture on the asphalt, fastest lap times decreased by up to 2 seconds, in autocross that equal to a whole time zone. Mike Redpath took top honors for the fastest Porsche, fourth overall, in his ‘01 911 at 55.528 sec. taking advantage of the improved track after lunch to secure his lead over Tyson Johnson from the Porsche Center Victoria at 56.676 seconds. Michael Holan (58.137 sec) and Dean Aikenhead (58.560) were within half a second of each other in a Boxster vs. Cayman battle. Steve Comberbach made a good show for his first time at 65.636 sec., he retired half way through the day battling illness instead of the cones. Garth Webber Atkins on her first outing in her 944 Turbo was apprehensive but quickly got the hang of it. With some help from some of the experienced drivers her times improved dramatically from over 100 seconds to a fastest time of 73.291 seconds. Wait till she gets new tires and uses the boost! Thanks to Greg Small for your help in the Place Driver position of Starter, Steve Comberbach for 1 Andrew Britney help with registration, Dean Aikenhead for 2 Karl Rhynas helping with Tech, Setup and Teardown and 3 Hayden Seger everyone else who brought Chili and Fun! 4 Michael Redpath These events are volunteer run events and if 5 Warren McCall it wasn’t for the volunteers these events 6 Chris Zarft would not happen. 7 Rick McConnell Conrad Peden 8 Tyson Johnson VIR Competition Director 9 Robert Orr 10 Nigel Webb 11 Zach Brown 12 Michael Holan 13 PK Preston 14 Chuck Hatt 15 Dean Aikenhead 16 Barry McCallum 17 Paul Miller 18 Steven Comberbach 19 Garth Webber Atkins PORSCHER — OCTOBER 2016

Cowichan Wine Tour & Scavenger Hunt
A
day punctuated with rain, puddles, drizzle, mizzle and more rain. The weather did not dampen the spirit of some die-hard Porsche enthusiasts who came out on the Thanksgiving weekend tour. Note: Sunday, October 9 – sunny & bright with no clouds in sight!
Eight weather-worthy cars (rooves up) and thirteen souls wound their way through 85 km in the Cowichan Valley on some well-travelled and less-travelled roads. The tour focussed on locating wineries, vineyards, a brewery and a distillery in the area and we even kept our eyes peeled for “Island Farms” locales along the way. We took some narrow, twisty, winding roads and even passed through a well-preserved neighbourhood with a long interesting history. Four stops included tasting wine, vinegar, jam and beer. The “end of the road” was at our house where we indulged in a German themed late-lunch prepared by Dean, of schnitzel, sausage, sauerkraut, braised red cabbage, German potato salad (with bacon!) and apple strudel. It became very quiet during the meal so we think it was enjoyed.
Scavenger hunt winners, Mark & Angela from Maple Bay had nearly all the answers correct; wow, they paid serious attention! Trevor from Comox collected three out of four of the scavenger items; thanks for “getting” my unusual clues. Prizes were also awarded for both high and low golf putts; dazzling sportsmanship by all for putting a “one-handed hole” while holding a Porsche umbrella in their other hand; partly as a challenge but largely out of necessity. It makes me smile that everyone always parks strategically at stops which makes for lots of nice Porsche pictures - very graceful. (Continued on page 8)

eather apps can be very useful. They can also be a constant distraction, especially if one is planning something that is weather dependant. After numerous "put that phone down” remarks from my wife, Sunday morning finally arrived. No rain! Top down and off to our regular Cars and Coffee location at Eagle Creek Village. The participants got to mingle with some of regulars and after our drivers’ meeting (past president, Brad, kept it short and to the point), it was time to leave. There were 14 of us in 9 cars and 250km of great roads and scenery ahead at us. Through View Royal, with its changing leaves and out onto the Island Highway. We had the occasional sprinkle, but otherwise the weather held out. The drive out to Port Renfrew was uneventful, but offered stunning views at times. Although the Renfrew Pub knew we were coming, they said were not able to offer us a reservation. Imagine my surprise when we arrived and they had the back room set aside for us! Food was great and the room offered a pleasant view of the water. We had a few more people sign the flag that Caren Cooper presented to our club at Black Rock. After an enjoyable break, we headed back onto the road and this time towards Lake Cowichan. With less traffic, the drive become more spirited, but eventually ran out of corners and we were in Lake Cowichan. Onto Duncan, where we pulled over and realized that we had become separated from a few of the members at the last traffic light. Moments later we saw them driving down a parallel street. Even though Porsche horns are quite piercing, they did not hear us! We waited, but after a few minutes decided to continue homeward. Unfortunately, we did not get a chance to say goodbye to Lily and Peter Brennan, who came all the way from Courtney for our little drive. For the fest of us, it was just a short jaunt over the Malahat and in no time we were back in Victoria. Michael Holan Secretary

Performance Driving in a 718 Boxster S
I
recently had opportunity to get some seat time in a 718 S Boxster S. This wasn’t supposed to be a test drive but from my perspective that is part of what it became. My wife and I were invited to the track for a Performance Driving course by Porsche Centre Victoria and among the cars was the 718 S.
This training is part of a multi-part program designed to get you not only more comfortable with your Porsche but also with performance driving on the track. So this level one session began with emergency braking then moved to high speed lane changes, auto-cross and finally hi-speed handling on the VIMC track.
I was able to score the 718 S for the auto-cross practice and the emergency braking, there is no question that those bigger brakes will do the job, and extra weight in the new configuration is handled by the bigger brakes. I did notice that from a standing stop when I punched the throttle (all cars were PDK) that there was a definite lag on throttle response off the line and then during transition through the slalom and mid-turn in the sweeps it was tougher to control the power delivery. I think as you drive the 718 S turbo more you would get used to it and apply power sooner. It is interesting to note that I had the 987 Black Edition Boxster for the Auto-cross, (with its NA flat-6) I could deliver the power smoothly through the slalom and sweeping turns keeping a smooth run and actually setting a low time in the event by nearly a second. Try as they might (even with launch control on), the drivers of the 718 S couldn’t catch me. To be honest I think they were trying too hard to catch me and pushing it, as younger drivers tend to do from time to time! ;-) OK, now on to the fun part, it was our turn to pick a car and head out to the track for hot laps and basic driver experience at higher speed, this time I thought I would move a bit quicker and get to the 718 S Boxster S before anyone was moving that direction. I offered to let my wife drive first (it was to be her first time on the track), but she felt a little right seat time to get a feel for things might be a good idea, as an obliging husband I said “sure dear…” So we set off onto the track, a 2.3km twisty beast with 19 turns and a lively topography with a maximum incline of 11.5% and downhill slopes of up to 12%, off camber turns but still a few places where you could open up the throttle a bit. I moved the 718 S out onto the track and was directly behind the instructor, with radios in the cars he could explain the course and desired lines, speeds, throttle and braking points and as he was driving a 911 there was a potential for speed as long as the pack could keep up. Although I did keep the system in Sport we were asked not to turn off PSM or use Sport+ and since this was only my second time on this track and not in my car, it seemed like a good idea! The 718 S had no problem keeping up with the 911 during the early laps as we were warming up the tires and getting the feel for the cars, the suspension felt good and the power delivery in the mid to high range was very good PORSCHER — OCTOBER 2016
Page 13
with the sound of the turbo wailing when the right foot was down hard, yes it felt like 350hp, the only time it did not was down real low, starting out, just off idle, but I suspect that with practice you could develop techniques (other than launch control) to get things moving from the start. After about 4 practice laps we got called in, I thought over already? (!), but it was radio trouble in the lead car, so we head right back out after a fresh radio was exchanged. More laps, with the speed increasing, the instructor still calling out details and now critiquing the following cars by colour, for most of us our lines were getting better and the speeds increasing, then another radio call, back to the pits for a new device, but again back out, this happened twice which gave me a real chance to get used to the 718 S, the car is very capable and with 350hp on tap it really hauls, sure it doesn’t sound like a flat-6 but that didn’t seem to matter as you reeled in the car ahead and toyed a bit before backing off. After about 16 laps we got the call to return to the pits to swap drivers, oh, I didn’t mention that my wife was in the right seat and it was to be her turn now, she had been doing well, hanging on for dear life as I tossed the 718 S into the corners and braked real hard before turns, it would now be my turn as observer. When we entered pit row, staged the cars and got out ready to swap, but even though she isn’t generally prone to motion sickness, I had scrambled her stomach pretty good and she decided to sit out her laps. I truly felt bad for her but, I was once again in the driver’s seat and about to head out for round 2! So once again behind the instructor, but now armed with fresh track knowledge and real sticky tires I could push the 718 S even harder! The same drill with the instructor calling out apexes, driving lines, turn-in points and braking but now I could go at it hard, probably nearing the 80-85% level of my ability and that of which I felt the car could handle and that of the track. This is a relative measure, a car new to me, as is the track and at my skill level, but by calling on previous experience I could tell when the tires were slipping and my confidence was being tested with somebody else’s car, the goal was to have fun and learn but also to use up only gas and rubber, the shiny side must remain up!
So the round two laps were very good, the car never failing to deliver the power when needed and because the throttle was usually either full on or off the turbo seemed to be non-existent in the feel of the car, with the throttle to the floor and accelerating along the front wall the turbo had a wonderful roar that made the observers on the clubhouse balcony turn their heads to look. The handling was spot on, compared to my 981 BGTS very similar, but I would want to drive the two cars back to back to make a real comparison, certainly no deficiencies here and no disappointments! Power delivery from about 2000rpm up to redline was amazing, it comes on strong and pulls consistently hard, different then my 3.4l NA which you work a bit to keep the power coming through where you want it and to be fair, my car has a manual and the 718 S was equipped with the PDK which made PORSCHER — OCTOBER 2016
Page 14
driving it a lot easier to concentrate on the track, your lines, breaking and turns as the shifting was all taken care of. I still love my 6MT and I am very happy that I ordered one, however should you find the need or desire to have the PDK in your car I would have to say that you will be rewarded with a transmission that can get the job done on the track and in the real world without compromise, something I never thought that I would say but after nearly a year with my wife’s Macan S I have grown to appreciate and respect this gear box for its abilities to be in the gear you need no matter the situation and free you up to concentrate on the road. I still like the 6MT in my Boxster GTS but can see that if the requirement is for 10/10’ths performance you have to consider the PDK the transmission to choose. So to finish off the driving aspect of the story, I have been on the track a few times now, it is becoming addictive, and I can see how people get drawn in to developing their skills on the track but also gaining a better understanding for vehicle dynamics that serve you well out on the street. We were certainly reminded how well the cars can stop, in an emergency situation from city street speeds (50km/h ~ 30 MPH ) barely 2 car lengths were required, if you can’t steer around the obstacle then hit those brakes hard and they will get the job done! Emergency lanes changes surprised a lot of people, I had learned this exercise before so I already knew what to expect, but many people that day learned just how fast you can switch lanes under complete control and in an extremely short distance, again a very good piece of knowledge to have in the real world where all sorts of thing may join you out on the road when you least expect it! Of course the hispeed aspect of the course was my favorite part, I learned a lot more about the car and my abilities to look ahead through the turn, how to use the tires to the best of their ability and gaging how much of each task they were doing breaking, accelerating or turning, remember there is only 100% of the traction to share up at any one moment. If you ever have the chance to sign up for a program like this or get invited to attend I highly recommend it to take advantage of it, these skills are real world and learning them in a controlled environment is second to none. So to finish off with a few words about the new Porsche 718 Boxster S, this car has a lot of promise, some would even say big shoes to fill. It was my conclusion that the mid-engine platform is in very capable hands, the suspension has been improved incrementally once again, and the brakes are even more formidable, the interior ergonomics also spot on with updated electronics and even more standard features. That part of this 718 S package that everyone likes to talk about is if course the engine with most quick to point out that it is not a NA flat-6, no question there, and forgetting about any historic relevance we all know that 4 cylinder engines are everywhere now and are capable of great power delivery, this engine is no different. The 2.5l flat -4 in the 718 S with the variable vane turbo produces 350hp and churns out 309lb-ft. or torque which by the way is the same as the 3.8l flat-6 in the 2016 Boxster Spyder. So the aural signature of the engine may have changed but the power is certainly there to get the job done, so if you happen upon one of these in the wild or are in line to purchase one for your self don’t underestimate it’s capabilities on the road or track! I would like to thank Porsche Centre Victoria for inviting us to attend their first driving event at the Vancouver Island Motorsport Circuit, they have a passion for these cars and this shows through with their enthusiasm and participation, this was held on a weekend day and they were there to help us learn, have fun and stay safe. Also kudos go to Shane and Tyler whose job as instructors was to provide a safe and enjoyable experience, you can tell they enjoy their job! As usual the staff at the Vancouver Island Motorsport Circuit had everything ready to go for us and provided a much welcomed lunch after a morning on the track. All in all an awesome day! Chili Challenge 2016
n October 16th, we held our annual Chili Challenge Cook Off at Western Speedway in Langford. Despite the dire weather warnings, 6 chili chefs (all club members) brought large pots of chili to feed the racers and spectators. We had 1 chef for every 3 racer, so there was plenty of food for all! A couple of chili competitors even brought homemade corn bread! All enjoyed the wide variety of chili styles which were all quite unique and tasty! Some spicier, some meatier, some beanier!
Congratulations to Dean Aikenhead, our new Chili Champion! Voting on the best chili was by show of hands from the crowd. While Dean definitely got the most votes, the rest of the chili competitors were pretty even, so I declared a 5 way tie for second place! Second place finishers, were Michael Holan, John McGurran, Jacquie Sherwood, Garth Webber Atkins, and myself. The cost for these spicy delights was a donation to charity. We raised $250 for the Goldstream Food Bank Society. Add to that the US $450 PCA charity subsidy, and we'll be making a pretty signification donation to the food bank! Special mention and thanks to Conrad Peden, our Competition Director and past Chili Champ (pictured right with Dean). While he brought a batch of chili and intended to compete, he was far too busy wrangling the autocrossers and running the time clock.
