I am so proud of Vancouver Island Region! Wochenende @ Crown Isle was well organized, well run and a LOT of fun. Participants were pleased with the venue, the area, and the activities, and we were all pleased with the weather, which was beautiful. Initial feedback is that attendees had a good time, and were very impressed that we pulled off a high-quality event in just five months.

Co-Chairs Trevor and Sonia Ross did an excellent job leading the organizing committee, and all committee members put in a lot of time and effort to make Wochenende an event to remember, and continue VIR’s reputation for a weekend event worth coming to. We also raised

over $8000 for Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock, and more than $1,000 in cash and food for the Comox Valley and Campbell River Food Banks. See more about this event in this issue.

On behalf of the VIR Executive Committee and the whole club, I thank Trevor and Sonia for taking on the leadership of this event and making it a very successful one, and I thank the whole committee for their hard work and enthusiasm. At the event, all committee members and other helpers were thanked with an old-fashioned glass etched with the Wochenende logo and filled with chocolates. Trevor and Sonia were also presented with a $150.00 gift certificate to Vista 18, and a bottle of bubbly to help them celebrate the achievement.

The Porsche fun continues in June, with the Spring TSD Rally June 4. This is a fun way to explore a little more of the Island. Porsche Centre Victoria’s 75th anniversary celebration is on June 11 at Vancouver Island Motorsport Circuit. See their web site Event page for more information. They have a lot going on there, and it looks like a great day out. The Past President’s Genoa Bay drive is on July 14, and this is always a popular event, so sign up soon if you want to go.

Have a great June and see you on the road!

Best regards,

President’s note

Volunteers

Interested in helping Vancouver Island Region? Let us know!

What makes the PCA so special is the variety of events that are organized by volunteers with a diverse and deep set of skills gained through careers or other life experiences. This is a busy time of year as we plan regional events for 2023, and we often need help to make things run as smoothly as possible.

Not everyone wants to take on organizing a drive or multi-day event, but quite often those who do are looking for help with registration, 'sweep' (following a group of cars to make sure that nobody gets left behind), or someone to take on a specific task like booking a lunch location.

If you've given thought to helping out in some way, please email me with your name and interest areas or any skills that you think the club might need. I'll gather that list together to provide to event organizers as planning continues over the next few months.

If you're interested in helping the club out for an event, send an email with 'volunteer' in the title to Ron Dempsey, vicepresident@virpca.org

Hello everyone!

May has been a great ‘Porsche month’! I was fortunate enough to visit two special Porsche dealerships in the Netherlands. Porsche Centrum Rotterdam and Porsche Centrum Gelderland. I was able to tour both facilities and was allowed to film as well. Will post a video to share this with you soon. Both days were organized by John Simons from the Nederlandse Porsche Club (Dutch Porsche Club). What a great guy! Thanks again, John!

Some of you may know that I work as a chef at the Black Goose Inn in Parksville. We started having Cars and Coffees here

in our parking lot and so far it has been a great success! Lots of members and non members! We even had a DJ two weeks ago! Thank you, Bernie, that was awesome! Nothing but great people! I would like to invite all of you to come check it out one day.

So many submissions for this issue! Thank you so much. Always exciting to see it come together. Enjoy this month’s issue of Porscher!

Story and pictures by Bill Johnson

In a recent edition of the Porscher Newsletter, you may have read the article on my 2010 GT3 European Delivery. I ended that article with the comment, “We had just begun our 6 week adventure. The story only gets better and better.” This article is about the “better and better” part – touring Europe for 6 weeks through 5 countries. The first 2 weeks was with our 28 year old son Tyson, and the last 4 weeks with my wife and travel planning expert, Donna.

The planned route took Tyson and I from Stuttgart north towards Cologne to the Nürburgring. After laps at the “Ring”, we headed south through the Alps to Venice (Tyson had never been there before). Then to the French Riviera to drive the Verdon Gorge canyon north of Cannes, the largest canyon system in Europe. At the end of our 2 week road trip, we arrived in Paris. Donna had just flown in and the 3 of us spent the weekend together. Tyson then flew home and Donna and I spent another 4 weeks wandering our way back to Stuttgart to drop off the car. On our way we toured the chateaux in the Loire Valley, visited Barcelona, travelled through the French Riviera to Tuscany (our favorite region in all of Europe), back to Venice then on to Stuttgart. This article describes some of the adventures along the way.

Knowing that a lot of the driving with our new high-performance car would be on congested freeways and twisting country roads, I set 3 conditions, in descending order of importance – don’t hurt ourselves, don’t hurt anyone else, and don’t hurt the car. The half day per driver worked quite well, as we found we needed to take a midday break. The break was either for a coffee, a light lunch or a tank of gas. When driving the autobahn or the autostrade throughout our journey, we found a tank of gas didn’t last long when motoring at 200 to 250 kph for a few hours. Two tanks a day on some days!

June 2023 - Page 12
When Tyson and I picked up the GT3, we agreed that we would alternate drivers, each getting behind the wheel for a half-day.

Our first stop was to the Nürburgring. Prior to ordering the GT3, I had never heard about this track. But Tyson certainly had, so he convinced me that we had to do a few laps. What a mind-blowing experience. Most of you have heard of it, many of you are familiar with it, and a few of you have driven it. This circuit is arguably the most famous and challenging track on the planet. The Ring is situated in the countryside in the Eifel Mountains. It originated as a motorway in the 1920’s, and although now a closed circuit, it remains officially part of the German highway system. The Nordschleife (North Loop) is 21 km long and has 160 turns through 1000 feet of elevation change. The circuit is primarily used by auto manufacturers for automotive development and endurance testing. During each day car manufacturers rent the track to drive their prototypes and vehicles under development through extreme driving conditions and “try to break them”. The track was home to the German Grand Prix and made famous by the likes of Stirling Moss, Jackie Stewart, Phil Hill and James Hunt. Jackie Stewart nicknamed the circuit “The Green Hell”, and for good reason.

During the early evenings, the track is open to anyone with a road-licensed

vehicle to drive at high speeds (including motorcycles and sedans, even motorhomes). These tourist events are called Touristenfahrten. Each lap costs about 25 Euros. Because the track is part of the German Highway System, it is classed as a public toll road. Therefore in the event of a crash your vehicle insurance in most cases covers you and your car and third party damage. However, it does not cover damage to the track. Replacement of Armco railing is about 1000 Euros per meter. In addition, you must pay for the tow truck, ambulance and attendants, helicopter evacuation, cleaning the debris off the track, and for 100%

June 2023 - Page 13
European delivery

of the track rental for the time the track cannot be used by the public. If you drive recklessly, make sure you have a large limit on your credit card.

Driving “The Green Hell” is like skiing a Double Black Diamond run. Your mind is totally focused on the track and the cars around you. You don’t have time to check your tachometer or speedometer. As the adrenaline begins to overtake your senses, you are only looking ahead and peeking at your mirrors. You are only listening to the roar of the engine and feeling the revs to anticipate at the top of each blind crest when you better snap-shift and brake hard. Pro drivers have advanced to lapping the Ring in well under 7 minutes. Our lap times were in the 11 to 12 minute range. After you complete a lap you are required to exit the track into a parking/ pit area before re-entering the circuit. Thank goodness for that. After driving the 21 km for 12 minutes, the mandatory pull-out area was welcome. Tyson and I would spend the 5 minute rest stop to untense our muscles, take a minute to breath deeply, stretch our legs, change drivers, then enter through the turnstiles, and do it all over again. What a blast!

Following the Nürburgring we headed south. Along the way we visited the medieval town of Rothenburg (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rothenburg_ob_der_Tauber ). Certainly worth a stop if you are in the area.

Driving the German autobahn in the GT3 was an exhilarating experience. Many sections of the autobahn are busy and have restricted speed limits, particularly as we approached towns with off-ramps and on-ramps. In certain longer sections of the autobahn in southern Germany all restrictions were removed. As we approached these designated sections, Tyson would grin and say, “Come on Dad, it’s GO TIME!” “The Beast” was made for speed. What I found was that doing 200 kph or even 250 kph felt comfortable and safe – the faster we went, the more the car hunkered down and hugged the road. We managed to quickly be doing 295 kph. As we accelerated towards 300 kph, I felt we were really moving. The car felt great and was really stable. But that’s what these high-performance cars that are designed and built from the ground up are meant to do. A bit different for the driver. When approaching these high-end speeds my eyes were getting as big as saucers, and my hands were gripping the steering wheel tighter. I was just hoping the vehicles ahead in the middle lane could sense how fast I was approaching in the passing lane, and not decide to enter my lane at the last minute.

Parking a sportscar in Venice, or really anywhere in Europe can be a challenge. When staying a few days in a large city we usually parked the car in a secure parking garage and walked the old downtown core. Some car parks require you to leave the keys with them. I don’t think so. I don’t think Europeans understand the concept of parking ramp transitions. In many cases the beginning of the ramp is horizontal; the ramp then abruptly changes to 15 degrees or more; then at the bottom of the long ramp the surface changes again abruptly to horizontal. On a few occasions I found myself reaching the ramp bottom and having to reverse back up the ramp to escape relieving my car of its front end and spoiler.

map and see which direction had the roads with the most “spaghetti” and plan the next day’s adventure. The canyon roads are carved out of the sides of steep cliffs and are very twisty and narrow. At speed it is important to be focused with quick hands.

After Venice we travelled across northern Italy and on to Monaco and south-eastern France. A short drive north of Cannes is a series of canyons that are a driver’s dream. The Verdon Gorge is the most extensive canyon system in all of Europe. See Top 5 most stunning views of the canyon | Verdon Tourisme . Tyson and I planned a few days in this area. After dinner each evening we would study a

One morning through the canyons apparently I had neither.

June 2023 - Page 16

While driving through a tight fast corner I clipped my front right tire on a rock and blew a hole in the sidewall. We phoned a tow truck that had to drive up from the coast. Two hours later we were off to a Porsche dealer in Antibes. The dealer ordered 2 new front tires (Porsche won’t replace a single front tire on a GT3, even though we had only put 2500 km on the car). Porsche roadside and our German insurance paid for the towing plus for a rental until the tires were replaced. The tires took 3 full days to arrive at Antibes. Seems a bit strange as we were at a Porsche dealer on the French Riviera, the car is German and the Michelin tires are made in France. Nevertheless, we spent the next 3 days leisurely touring the Riviera around Saint Tropez in the Audi A3 Cabriolet. Not a bad way to wait for tires.

Another unexpected surprise was while we were at the Antibes Porsche dealership they were servicing one of my favorite cars ever – a very rare GT1. The car came in with Andorra plates and a day later left with Monaco plates. Go figure!

Donna was soon to arrive in Paris so we now had to alter our routing. Due to our unexpected extended stay on the Mediterranean, we had to drive from Antibes to Paris in 1 day, missing out on our stay in the Burgundy countryside. Donna, Tyson and I spent the weekend in Paris, after which Tyson flew home and I began the third part of our adventure travelling 4 weeks with Donna to add more kilometers to our new car.

European delivery June 2023 - Page 17

We first drove to the Loire Valley southwest of Paris to visit a few of the hundreds of Chateaux built between the 10th and 16th centuries. My favorite is the Chambord Chateau, a hunting lodge built in the 14th century for King Francis the 1st, with its 440 rooms, 282 fireplaces and 84 staircases. Château de Chambord - Wikipedia It’s no wonder the French peasants eventually revolted.

We then meandered south to Barcelona, to visit the Gaudi architectural marvels and to sample the delicious tapas bars. The stuffed peppers, sardines and sausages are a treat –a few bites at a >me.

I have to tell you about one of the best parts of travelling through Europe in your own car. It allows you total independence to do anything you want, any >me you want, and anywhere you want. It allows you the opportunity to find a small village, book accommoda>on for 3 or 4 days, and drive each day 20 to 50 km in different direc>ons. Find out where the local daily town markets are and buy some local bread, cheeses, pates, strawberries and wine. Stop by a country road by a park and spread out your treasures to revel in an hour-long picnic lunch in the warming sunshine, all the while enjoying the private view over the river or vineyard. The drive through the hillsides is peaceful and calming, but so is that pre-dinner snooze before walking to the restaurant a few blocks away for pici pasta with truffles. By staying in an out-oftown B & B villa you will get to enjoy the sumptuous breakfast buffet and a great cappuccino.

Our rou>ng took us through southern France, into Tuscany, our very favorite part of Europe, then on to visit friends in the Dolomites north of Trento. We then returned the car to the Porsche factory in StuSgart at the end of October.

June 2023 - Page 18

The export cars being shipped to Canada are taken to a port on the North Sea and mine was shipped to Halifax. Ours was trucked across the continent in an enclosed semi-trailer and driven to Victoria, arriving on a rainy day in early January. Inside were the “S 5 S” export plates and on the dash was the “Build Sheet”, imprinted with the bold red “NOT FOR SALE” stamp.

We had reached the end of a very exhilarating and unforgettable adventure, one that we continue to relive more than a decade later. We have since repeated “the journey”. In 2013 Donna ordered a new Boxster S that we picked up at Porsche’s newer factory in Leipzig. When we ordered a new 718 Spyder in 2020 we had planned a European delivery but had to abandon the trip to Europe due to Covid, and took a Victoria delivery. Certainly a big part of our European delivery tours has been the ability to drive the Ring. So far, 5 members of our family have had the delivery and Ring experience. Besides Tyson, Donna and I, our daughter and son-in-law have also had the pleasure when picking up their Carrera T in 2018.

I can appreciate that not all of us can do the trip, but if you ever get the opportunity, I assure you that the experience will last a lifetime.

Happy motoring, wherever your journey takes you.

Club Visit to Porsche 75 Exhibit at Lemay Museum in Tacoma

A group of VIRPCA members ventured down to Tacoma, Washington, to see the Porsche 75th Anniversary display at the Lemay Museum on April 20 and 21. Because Tacoma is at the south end of Puget Sound, it was a pretty straightforward route from the Port Angeles Ferry terminal for about two-three hours down to the hotel. However, planned delays at the Hood Canal bridge meant a new route had to be found, and that was a blessing in disguise. It meant that more fun and twisty roads were found so that the group of five couples got to enjoy their Porsches all the more.

Ron Dempsey organized the tour. After clearing US Immigration in Port Angeles, he arranged a short drive to the 7 Cedars Casino for lunch where a few local members of the Olympic Peninsula Region graciously joined us for lunch.

Almost 3 hour’s drive later, we arrived at the Hotel Murano. With the Museum of Glass nearby, the hotel featured fabulous art throughout the lobby and on every floor. It was also only five minutes to the Lemay. Dinner at the hotel restaurant on Thursday night was a delight as well.

The next morning, we were joined by a number of Porsches and owners from all around the area including Pacific Northwest Region, Canada West and Olympic Peninsula. Over 20 cars in all parked in front of the museum on the plaza specially set aside for our group. After meeting and chatting with fellow PCA members for a while, we gathered inside and started with a talk by Jay Gilotti, Club Historian for Pacific Northwest Region and author of books on Porsche history. He took the group through a background on the museum and the collection of Porsches that we were about to see in the main hall.

The collection of cars for the 75th Anniversary was diverse, from a 1953 Porsche-Cooper race car (aka ‘The Pooper’) to a 1968 908, to a number of 356’s, 911’s and a few other examples of transaxle cars, too. The collection might have numbered 15 cars, leaving lots of time to explore the rest of the museum and massive collection the Lemay holds over three floors. Lots of American cars from 1910 to the 1990’s, a collection of British Sports Cars, and an array of everything else, from 1970’s experimental cars to a BMW 507, were displayed in the standing collection. There’s truly something for everyone.

Jay reminded us that the Porsches in the collection (unlike most of the rest of the museum) are owned by local individuals, and Porsche owners being what they are, like to drive their cars. That means that the P-Cars on exhibit currently will turn over somewhat as the summer goes on. It’s worth a visit If you’re in the area this year, as it’s expected to continue throughout 2023. There’s some Porsche-branded merchandise in the gift shop, a café overlooking the main hall, and even racing simulators to take in should you have the time.

The dis>nc>ve sounds of 32 Porsche motors recently filled the air of the Comox Valley for our first “Wochenende @ Crown Isle”. Held from May 25 to 28, the event welcomed members who drove from as far away as Idaho, to as close as a kilometre away.

Crown Isle Resort & Golf Club’s beau>ful grounds were on full display as cars arrived on Thursday. There was no doubt the Porsche club had arrived, as guests were welcomed at registra>on with a gi_ bag (organized by Betsy Terpsma) and the surprise of seeing John Clark’s back-dated 1986 911 parked inside the clubhouse. Everyone mingled in and out on the warm evening, enjoying local oysters, wine and whisky, and a delicious and substan>al spread of finger food prepared by Crown Isle. Background piano music was provided by Svetlana Menshykova, a talented music teacher who was displaced from Mariupol, Ukraine due to the war. Guests showed their apprecia>on by contribu>ng to a dona>on jar.

32 people gathered on a sunny Friday morning for a Gimmick Rally organized by John Clark and Zoë Levitsky. This fun event, which ended at the Comox Marina, gave par>cipants an opportunity to see some local Comox Valley sights while engaging in friendly compe>>on. At last report, all marriages were s>ll intact. The winners of the rally, with each group only making one error out of 57 clues, were:

-Mark and Linda Prusynski (Silver Sage)

Didier and Irene Brard (VIRPCA)

Garth and Rowland Atkins (VIRPCA)

John Palmeter and Betsy Terpsma (VIRPCA)

Two organized events were on tap for Friday a_ernoon – an oceanside hike led by Craig and Ellen Melvin, and a tour of the Comox Air Force Museum (which we donated to) led by Sergeant Ryan Lees. Both events were very well aSended.

The chef at Crown Isle did his magic again on Friday evening with a delicious buffet dinner, then we launched into a spirited game of Music Bingo that had guests (and Crown Isle staff) singing along. There may even have been some spontaneous dancing. We also raised more than $1,000 in cash and food for the Comox and Campbell River Food Banks. Trevor Ross won the 50/50 draw, which he re-donated (a_er taking out a few bucks to cover his bar bill). All guests received door prizes, many of which was supplied by Porsche Centre Victoria.

Another warm and sunny day greeted us on Saturday as we set out on three drives. First out of the gate were the group that followed Gary Glover to Gold River along one of the most scenic roads on Vancouver Island, full of opportuni>es to let P-cars and drivers do their thing. Just keep an eye out for wild turkeys. Lunch was at Sea & Field Bistro in Gold River, which opened their doors especially for our group and, from what we’ve heard, are a must-do while in the area.

Wochenende June 2023 - Page 41

Next was a drive for the “Foodies”, led by yours truly (Sonia). We were joined by local chef Gaetane Palardy who toured us through markets, a dis>llery, and a chocola>er before preparing a scrump>ous array of local cheese and charcuterie, which we enjoyed on the pa>o at 40 Knots Winery. Plenty of driving took place in between stops, from pastoral country roads to a zip up the inland highway.

While visi>ng the chocola>er in Cumberland, we came across the third and final group, who were having lunch there as part of the “Highways and Byways” drive led by Mar>n Jager. Mar>n and his wife, Sheila, are long->me residents and treated their group to a full experience of the Comox Valley and Campbell River areas before ending at the award-winning Shelter Point Dis>llery. A few drivers got to test their brakes midway through the drive when three horses decided to join the group.

Saturday was our gala evening to celebrate the weekend and raise funds for Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock. There was an excellent array of items up for bid during the pre-dinner Silent Auc>on, including whisky, art, oil changes, car detailing, a custom Porsche-shaped crib board carved by local ar>st Mar>n Buchanan, and more. We enjoyed another delicious buffet dinner, featuring Crown Isle’s famous prime rib and local salmon. Klaus Kreye was the winner of the Trivia Quiz, expertly prepared by John Clark.

Norm Smith (auc>oneer, Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock representa>ve and VIRPCA club member) got the Live Auc>on off to an energe>c start. The bidding was spirited for all items, many of them donated by our generous sponsors, including GAIN, Garage Kings, Porsche Centre Victoria and XPEL. A surprise auc>on item was offered by Courtenay volunteer firefighter and paramedic Ajinkya Chodankar, our local Tour de Rock rider, who is also a chef and will be preparing an Indian dinner for 10 lucky people. More than $8,500 was raised for Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock 2023, an annual event where law enforcement and emergency services personnel cycle 14 days and 1200 km across Vancouver Island raising money for childhood cancer research and support services at the Canadian Cancer Society.

Sunday was another sunny day, perfect for Cars & Coffee, our final Wochenende event. We were joined by some addi>onal VIRPCA members who drove up for the morning. Henning Wulff’s 2010 911 GT3 won the people’s choice award.

We sadly waved goodbye to friends, old and new, as cars began trickling away and the sound of Porsche motors faded, heralding the end of a “Wunderbar Wochenende”.

A Concours d’Elegance is a judged event celebrating the history and provenance of the Porsche marque. PCA members show their cars and judges deduct points from a maximum possible value based on vehicle condition and cleanliness. The Parade Concours is an event favorite. Parade is a great time to give it a try!

Pacific Marine Circle Tour

Saturday 26 August

Mark your calendars for a peak-summer spin around the Pacific Marine Circle route on Saturday 26 August!

Preliminary plan is to travel in two groups, driver’s choice, one clockwise via Sooke and Jordan River, and the other counterclockwise via Duncan and Lake Cowichan. Starting point for both will be West Shawnigan Lake Park and (official) end points will be watering holes in either Langford or Duncan, depending on direction. Either way, the groups will join up in Port Renfrew for lunch.

Additional details to come; keep an eye on:

• the VIRPCA President’s event update emails

• the events page of the VIRPCA web site at https://virpca.org:452/VIRPCA/Events

• the club’s Facebook group page: “Vancouver Island Region - Porsche Club of America”

Cars and coffee South island

9:00 am every Sunday

With summer approaching, VIRPCA members are taking full advantage of the outdoor seating at our regular C&C venue: Whole Foods at the Uptown mall.

In addition to their Porsches, each Sunday can bring a peek into our members’ non-Porsche automotive passions, from beautifully restored trucks and SUVs to amazing sporty selections from other marques from around the world… and even the occasional two-wheeled freedom machine!

The conversation is always lively, and coffee and muffins are cheap. For alternatives to the "humble" coffee on tap at Whole Foods, your java jolt can also be acquired drive-through at nearby Tim Hortons, Starbucks, or McDonald's, and there is also a walk-in Starbucks on the lower level of Uptown.

If all this sounds like a great way to kickstart your Sunday, please approach from southbound Pat Bay Hwy/Blanshard Street, turn right at the pedestrian crossing lights, head up the ramp, and turn right at the top. Whole Foods is at the north end of the parking lot.

See you there!

First Thursday of every month

There's No Foodie Like a Porsche-driving Foodie!

Fast. Food. is a monthly casual get-together for VIRPCA members –non-member plus-ones also welcome! – to appreciate the gastronomic delights of our island home.

We explore a new venue in the South Island area on the first Thursday of every month. The selection of each month’s venue is guided by ideas and advice from the attendees at the previous event, allowing our menu styles and geography to evolve.

With five 2023 events already “under our belts” we are looking forward to the patio-forward Vancouver Island summer.

Watch for Fast. Food. event announcements:

The detailing garage

Tech night April 25th

After being advised by Club friends that a new car detailing supplies store called The Detailing Garage had opened in Victoria (at Douglas St and Saanich Rd), I went there and during my visit, I chatted with the manager Matt Sanderson about the Porsche Club. It turns out that Matt’s father on the mainland owns a Porsche and coincidentally is/was the Editor of his region’s newsletter! I suggested a Tech Night for Club members and Matt was very enthusiastic about holding it and so we agreed on the evening of April 25th.

25 members signed up for the event and as most of the surrounding stores had closed before 7pm, there was ample parking either outside or in the close vicinity. Matt and franchise owner David had even brought over some other staff from Vancouver to help out and assist in answering our questions on the products (primarily Chemical Brothers) or techniques for getting the best results using them. Matt held a polishing/finishing demonstration showing off the rotary tools and encouraged members to try them on an old hood he had set up just for that purpose, which some people did.

The staff were knowledgeable and enthusiastic - even taking pictures of our cars and posting them on their walls! The door prizes drawn throughout the event were very nice and Matt even provided some Tim’s coffee, juice and doughnuts too!

I think the majority of attendees found something that they wanted to buy and as Club members we were provided with a discount too. The Detail Garage also donated some products to our Wochenende charity event (thanks to Tim Evans for asking), so please drop in, let them know you are a Club member and tell them that you appreciate their generosity - I expect you’ll find something that you need too!
